Ok, some thing I’ve noticed.

According to my research, yes the producers know a large portion of the fandom extrapolated and consider the Vulcan finger touch to be a kiss. They have outright said it’s not, and it’s the equivalent of handholding—just a sweet romantic gesture, but fandoms will fandom anyway, and thus the assumption made from the scenes where Vulcan’s would touch fingers as a form of affection with their spouse lives on in Star Trek fandom culture. Regardless though, they absolutely know fans headcanon the interaction differently than they intended. I believe they continue to add the interaction despite the misconception because they aren’t changing the original intent just because it was misunderstood, which is valid. But as started prior, fandoms will fandom the way fandoms will fandom and a large chunk of fans will always see a kiss.

like maybe unification didn't make spirk canon in that we didn't see them make out with tongue or whatever but what it did make canon and what makes it so incredibly important to me is that kirk and spock's ending is no longer so goddamn tragic.

before, jim died in his sixties and spock spent the next 100+ years missing him before dying alone. now, even with all the tragedy and heartbreak and the lifetime spent apart, they were together in the end. they were together and happy and everything was beautiful!!

I’ve literally been crying over Unification since I found out it existed but this really didn’t help.

All I can think about is Jim saying “When I die, I’ll be alone.” Spock, much later saying “You could not have died, Captain, for you were never alone.”

Jim dying alone in a different time and place, looking at the newest Captain of the Enterprise

Spock dying in a different universe, watching as a different universe’s version of himself and his best friend are only just now meeting, while his soul longs for his other half

Their souls have always been entertwined.

Even further update!! I got sidetracked (this should surprise literally absolutely no one that knows me), but I did have a title for it and have the second draft detailed out before that happened!

WHICH IS PROGRESS!!

So far, I have the outline of Jim's reaction to waking up on Tarsus and knowing something's really wrong, pre-test Jim in his Starfleet classes and learning about a Kobayashi Maru replacement, what led Spock to planning out the Tarsus IV instead and his process for making it, Bones being Bones in the background as Jim's best friend and doctor, and a whole lot of trauma and angst for all of our me enjoyment!! It appears that the bit's I have left to do on the second draft before I can move on to draft three is decide exactly what happened on Tarsus (as opposed to Jim's test), add some extra scenes with Nyota being badass as law requires, and determine how Spock will finally convince Jim that it's a test so he can wake up.

Also, fun fact, rereading the plot outline notes... it would seem I subconsciously used the same basic plot for the svsss fic I'm working on and absolutely didn't notice until right now lol

Hi there, I saw your comment on that post about the AU where Spock programs the test as Tarsus IV rather than Kobayashi Maru saying you were writing that fic... did you ever post the link to that? I was really interested in reading it, but I'm terrible at navigating the tumblr interface, so I figured it may be more expedient to just ask ^^;

I did not! Life happened and such. But you are not the first person to ask me about this, so I should probably actually go do that… I’ll go pull up my drafts today and try to remember where I left off <3

I’ve only got three possible reactions to watching a TOS episode:

“I can’t believe this aired” (the worst plot you’ve ever seen on tv)

“I can’t believe this aired” (a piece of media so beyond its time and still relevant to today’s discussions, that I’m surprised it didn’t got censored at the time it went on air)
