Hi! I haven't had a chance to play Eureka yet, but having read it a while ago and following your posts further explaining some of the philosophies behind it, I just want to say that, as someone with multiple disabilities, what you're saying here is really cool and i appreciate it a lot.
I was really hesitant at first glance, probably because of how long I've felt the need to justify my existence by minimizing the accommodations and resources I ask for, even (and often) to my own detriment. The whole idea of being a burden cuts in to that and hits at the heart of the insecurity, so it was a little hard to hear spoken so plainly. Ultimately, though, seeing someone acknowledge that there is truth to that insecurity - I am, indeed, asking for a lot more from the people around me than a fully abled person would be - but that it in no way undermines the worth of my own life was really fulfilling. So yeah, thanks lol
Thank you!
(some links to previous posts about this topic that are being referenced)
I know exactly how you feel. I don’t want to speak for all disabled people, but the shame of being a burden is something that I think most of us probably feel to some degree or another, and something that we would be better off without, which is of course a big theme of Eureka’s monsters.
Hell, even “able-bodied” people need to be taken care of when they’re kids, when they’re old, and when they’re sick. The distinction “disabled” practically only exists to determine who gets minor legal exceptions in a society where you’re only valued by how much you can do particular kinds of work, and plenty of “able-bodied” people do have a lot of things about them that hinder them but just aren’t visible enough or quite bad enough to qualify for the legal distinction.
So really, it’s something I think a lot of people could stand to unlearn. A little bit of selfishness is okay sometimes.
Sometimes, people take offense to the part of the metaphor that involves the actual killing and eating of other people by monsters, and say that the disability comparison works for the monsters that don’t have to kill people, but not for the monsters that do have to kill people, especially with the fact that their targets will often end up being other vulnerable people and not cops or CEOs or something. I have a few thoughts about that.
For one, well, the cool thing about fiction and fantasy is that it can present a more extreme and entertaining version of the real life problems that the art is about.
Secondly, for some of those monsters that don’t have to kill their victims or even technically have to hurt people at all to avoid dying, well, structuring your life around personal deprivation to ensure that you never harm or burden anyone else ever is kind of the thing that this anon brings up, minimizing their accommodations and resource consumption to their own detriment. “Disabled people should go without as much as possible and subsist on the bare minimum resources to sustain them” is pretty much the complete opposite of Eureka’s themes and I feel like saying that the only acceptable disability metaphor monsters are the ones that have a slightly easier time subsisting on the bare minimum harm without literally dying is not good.
Then there’s the issue of who they eat. Really, they can try to eat whoever they want, but the “hunting tables” that provide opportunities when (and if) the monsters go out looking for victims are primarily comprised of pretty average, often pretty vulnerable people, including old people, young people, homeless or just obviously poor people, etc.
One of the reasons is because, well, non-vulnerable people aren’t vulnerable. When a healthcare CEO makes decisions that result in many poor people being unable to afford proper medicine and thus becoming disabled, the burdens that creates don’t fall back on them, they fall back on other poor people. When a politician makes policy decisions that result in more people being unable to get money for food without resorting to violence, that increase in crime doesn’t affect their fancy gated community, it affects poor people.
I talk about monsters in Eureka as a metaphor for disability a lot, but that purposefully isn’t the only valid reading. A lot of them can represent anyone whose needs are impossible to meet without taking from others.
Eureka isn’t a masturbatory CEO-eating simulator because it isn’t about wish fulfillment or power fantasy. First and foremost that burden will fall on the shoulders of one’s own community, not the rich guy causing all the problems. Eureka (and future A.N.I.M. games like Silk&Dagger) doesn’t present a world as it should be, it presents a world how it is. And Eureka says if being a bit selfish and burdensome to your own community is necessary for you to not only live, but live with any degree of happiness, then that shame and guilt isn’t helping anyone.
Elegantly designed and thoroughly playtested, Eureka represents the culmination of three years of near-daily work from our team, as well as a lot of our own money. If you’re just now reading this and learning about Eureka for the first time, you missed the crowdfunding window unfortunately, but you can still check out the public beta on itch.io to learn more about what Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy actually is, as that is where we have all the fancy art assets, the animated trailer, links to video reviews by podcasts and youtubers, etc.!
You can also follow updates on our Kickstarter page where we post regular updates on the status of our progress finishing the game and getting it ready for final release.
Beta Copies through the Patreon
If you want more, you can download regularly updated playable beta versions of Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy earlier, plus extra content such as adventure modules by subscribing to our Patreon at the $5 tier or higher. Subscribing to our patreon also grants you access to our patreon discord server where you can talk to us directly and offer valuable feedback on our progress and projects.
The A.N.I.M. TTRPG Book Club
If you would like to meet the A.N.I.M. team and even have a chance to play Eureka with us, you can join the A.N.I.M. TTRPG Book Club discord server. It’s also just a great place to talk and discuss TTRPGs, so there is no schedule obligation, but the main purpose of it is to nominate, vote on, then read, discuss, and play different indie TTRPGs. We put playgroups together based on scheduling compatibility, so it’s all extremely flexible. This is a free discord server, separate from our patreon exclusive one. https://discord.gg/7jdP8FBPes
Other Stuff
We also have a ko-fi and merchandise if you just wanna give us more money for any reason.
We hope to see you there, and that you will help our dreams come true and launch our careers as indie TTRPG developers with a bang by getting us to our base goal and blowing those stretch goals out of the water, and fight back against WotC's monopoly on the entire hobby. Wish us luck.

very dark sad text about how i feel right now
if you wonder how i am doing mentally:
we talked with friends in chat and conversation came to talking about a way of moving away from countries by getting refugee status
and there is the thing that, as i heard, if you do that, there is a rule, that you can't visit country which you are running from (it's not 100℅ correct info, i just heard that this can be a thing, and it has exceptions, etc etc. pls don't panic if you are going to be a refugee, or are already, it's not from news or anything, if you are starting this path you already know about this aspect better than i, and if you aren't refugee, don't take is as 100% true info about refugee situations, again, i just heard it somewhere)
the thing is, my friends told me that it's a thing for people to think about for making decision on starting this path or not. and i was like.... really? someone is worring about it?
if i could have a chance i wouldn't think a second. like, idk, refugee center worker, or how it works, idk, would ask like: hey do you know that you will not be able to visit that countr-YES YES I KNOW I DONT WANT TO VISIT IT NEVER EVER IN MY LIFE I WILL NOT EVEN LOOK IN A SIDE OF A COMPASS IN DIRECTION OF THIS COUNTRY!! WHY DO YOU THINK I AM HERE IN THIS CENTER??? - would be my answer
and i started to think like... but it is important thing for people. and someone giving their ability to visit that first place as their sacrifice. and i thought. what sacrifice i could give?
i remembered my childhood intrusive thoughts. it was like that button memes with "you can press the button to [something] to hapen but [something else] also happen". but it was sad thoughts, not funny pictures. i imagined me choosing between something. visually in my head it was like tv show. i stand, and there's the question "here's your mam, cat, and dad. choose who to live and who will be killed". and i had to choose. i don't remember my choices only question
and today, after that chat with friends i imagined that weird "what if" choice like. what would i give for getting out of here? (and yes i would get out of here long time ago but i am not able to. it's kind of the heart of the problem)
and i thinked about it. and i understood that i feel. bad. i underestimated my depression
because i would agree to live in most broke flat. matrass in a room with 20 people? if not here - i am all in
i would give all my things. everything. leave me clothes which i am wearing, take everything else if you will take me away
and. it's a that. non-real abstract scenarios. "we will take you away, but you sleep in room with 20 people on the floor, what's you think?" - this is not how it's happen. i am just thinking about what i have and what i could give for getting away, if it worked like that.
so, all my things which i collected in 2 bags. bad living conditions. what i am ready to agree on else? what else i can to give in that strange abstract deal? what i even have?
i would give my leg. no hesitation
i was saying this to my friend in voice message, and it took me 5 seconds of thinking and to say that i would give 2 legs
if it was an option like "you can buy living not in your country by giving us your limbs" - have my legs, i would be first in line
i am an artist and. i thought a little longer. maybe 10 mins and come to thought that i would give my left arm too
i stopped thinking this thought somewhere here.
i am sorry if i sound offensive to disabled people, say me pls if it's something really bad to say. If you are disabled and this text offense you, tell me, i will delete this post. i am writing in emotions and not really like. eh. thinking about. just say if its bad pls
It's just thoughts about what i have and what i would give as sacrifice. And everything i have is my 2 bags. And my body. (and my art but freedom of art is one of the reasons why i wish to get away)
and i just thought about that if people think about not being able to visit country which they are running from as sacrifice, i started to think, do i consider even anything as sacrifice. and well, as you can see, that i absolutely have no problem with real things which are sacrifices to others in that situation, i would be fine i am sure, so i made up a abstract situation in my head to see how far i can go and.
that fact that i would agree to give my limbs for getting out of here. i think it's very sad. i didn't think i feel so bad being here
can you imagine thinking of place there you live like that. it's not okay for people suffer so much that giving a fucking leg is something they can say on, without doubt "if you will get me away take it TAKE IT"
it's so fucked up
p.s. the country is russia by the way
#tw very sad thoughts#tw scary thoughts#tw vent#i hate then disability and disabled people are used as metaphor#but... it's kind of differend. i hope#i mean i would really give it#but i am not sure so#if you disabled and you offensed by this post#as i said#say it in notes or in my dm i will delete the post

My thoughts on Cishet White Women as a ‘Former’ Cishet White Woman
I have been grappling with this since the election- this question of ‘Why do so many cishet white women betray their community this way?’- and I’m tried to some up my understandings in words.
Cishet white women have never had to grapple with the fact that the world does not want them here.
As a queer, trans, disabled person I realized in my mid teens that millions of people would rather I not exist than have a place in society. This realization sparked in me a deep desire to support the people around me who faced this same reality.
POC, queer, trans, and disabled (as well as many other groups) people have constantly had it thrown in our face that we are not welcome here. All of our communities have faced extreme violence (especially black people), threatening our existence within the world.
However, with cishet white women, they have always had a place in this world. Despite women being constantly devalued by men, men have always said that there is a role for women: baby-maker, pleasure provider, caretaker. There has been no need to grapple with the fact that they have been told they shouldn’t exist. Sure their rights are being taken, but their lives aren’t. There will be no mass eradication of white women, because white women have a role in society.
As a white AFAB person, I did not grasp the depth of the mistreatment of other communities until I realized my own queerness and the depth of the mistreatment of my own community. If you have not had to grapple with that, why would you care about intersectionality? (/sar) I will be fine, you should be fine too! (/sar)
Empathy for people who are systemically made to be perceived as ‘other’ is not something white people are taught. We are taught the opposite and to realize that, a lot of the time you have to realize that you are ‘other’ as well. It is a sad truth, but one nonetheless.
So, cishet white women, what can you do? If there is one thing I can urge other white people to do, it is to do your own research and your own internalized exploration of your internal bigotry. Do not rely on minorities (specifically POC) to teach you this stuff, but do listen when they offer their incredibly necessary view point.
This is probably rambling but I couldn’t help but think about why someone could hate me and millions of other minorities so much as to vote for that orange man
#if you have anything to add repost or add in the comments#hope this made sense#if i was offensive ir bigoted im any way lemme know#queer#lgbt#election#election 2024#politics#white women#cishet white women#trans#disabled#long post#introspection

Okay, if you say "happy positivity to disabled folk" BUT you exclude disabled folk cause "they are almost all of the positivity posts..."
You are a fucking asshole and DO NOT actually believe in disability positivity.
This is like saying aspec people aren't queer cause we "aren't oppressed enough." Fuck you and I hope you eventually realize how fucked up that is.

You know how queer ppl keep saying that the online queer community isn't representative of the offline community and that you should go to irl meet-ups? That also goes for the autism community.
Example: I've seen multiple people who are under the impression that media-type special interests are overrepresented or more accepted in the autism community. That's not true. The people who participate in the online community (esp. the fan community) on Tiktok, Tumblr, and Twitter are mostly nerdy young millenials/gen z/gen x, and not representative of the wider autistic population. Go to any autism meet-up and you'll quickly learn that a) 'what is your special interest?' is not a question ppl ask, so whether you do or don't know what someone's special interest is depends on how preoccupied they are with it, and b) most people don't have media-focused (special) interests, and if they do, it's certainly not limited to kids cartoons.
I know that not everyone can go to autism meet-ups irl, and I don't want to pretend that irl autism meet-ups are some sort of safe haven full of people with Advanced Autism Knowledge and Progressive Politics. But like. That's the point? Interact with some 80-year-old who's been diagnosed for 20 years and doesn't know the modern terms for anything and who thinks vaccines cause autism despite being autistic themself and maybe you'll calm down.
#Like no offense but some of the takes I see on here just scream#'I've only ever interacted with the online autism community'#Saw someone saying 'tiktok' autism is destigmatized and an example of that was flapping hands#Buddy. Pal. You are living in a bubble. A not insignificant amount of autistic ppl dont even know what stimming is#And on that note. Discrimination specifically against high support autistic ppl and autistic ppl with intellectual disabilities#Is even worse irl. Actually.#Precisely BECAUSE irl autism meet ups often ward those ppl so many autistic ppl of different support levels dont mingle#Again. Im not saying the irl autistic community is BETTER#Im saying its DIFFERENT and if u only interact with tiktok twitter and tumblr autistic communities u just#Arent getting an accurate representation of the wider autism community#My posts#Actuallyautistic

Hey can we stop being assholes please
TW: implied slurs, suicidal thoughts, SA (sort of?)
.
.
.
.

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
you aren't cool when you use racial slurs or homophobic slurs or any other slurs and you aren't cool when you make fun of people who have mental health problems or disabilities (physical or mental)
"Did you see the (Yes, the n-word im sorry) over there?" Go back to the, like, 1800s please. Racism is not cool. Don't say that word.
"Nobody likes you, you (f-slur, sorry again)." Do you realize how much it hurts when us queer folk hear that? And we hear it a lot. So please don't. We don't need the whole world to hate us. It isn't hard to just be kind.
"Oh, your name is Austin? More like autistic" Okay NOT AN OKAY INSULT. Literally stfu. Autism is not something you should be repulsed by. It's not something you should use as an insult. Autistic people are people just like you.
"People who have anxiety/depression are such weirdos." Yeah thanks, I heard you, now I want to die even more thanks so much. I will gladly off myself so you dont have to deal with such a "weirdo."You've confirmed that nobody wants me here and that people think badly of me. I really appreciate it.
"We should dress up as special Ed kids for halloween cuz then we can pretend to be stupid freaks!" Do you even realize you're talking about another human being. Actually, do you? I'm not sure you do. Be nicer.
All of the above is things I've heard, occasionally they're directed at me. I haven't heard anything much on the next example so bear with me.
Don't do the thing where you call the girl a whore and slut shame her and then pat the guy on the back cuz he got laid. Just, no. Don't make the girl feel like she's done something wrong, then tell the guy good job. STAWP.
Next thing, recent experience, sorry if you're the ppl who have already heard me be pissed about it.
Respect privacy. Respect boundaries. When the person in front of you in line for lunch keeps moving away from you, you're too close, back up. Don't touch their ass. Don't stand so close that you can feel them shaking with fear. And don't try to pull the same thing twice. (btw, i told him off yesterday and it felt very nice).
BASICALLY MORAL OF THE STORY STOP BEING ASSHATS AND THE WORLD MIGHT BE A BETTER PLACE
#let's stop being assholes#tw for suicidal stuff#tw slurs implied#tw sa implied#respect people#don't use mean slurs#be nice to people with disabilities#be nice to everyone#be respectful to everyone#STAWP BEING BAD#thank you#please if u rb this come up with some good tags for me im crap at tagging#sorry if i said anything offensive i promise i didn't mean to hurt anyone thats literally the point of this post#just dm me if something is inaccurate or offensive and tell me how i can make it better#and i will do it#thanks for coming and visiting my shitposts that somethimes turn out deep and meaningful

Reminder from someone with actual literal brain damage from a brain injury to stop fucking using "brain damage" and "brain injuries" as a means of describing someone whose opinions you don't like or deem as stupid.
It's ableist and offensive as fuck, and for some reason a lot of leftist people think it's okay to use. I've seen posts replying to right wing racists calling them "brain damaged if you believe this" and "do you have a brain injury? do you not understand X?". Just now I saw a beautiful post about fat people throughout history that was absolutely ruined by opening with "How do we break it to boomers with actual brain damage and nostalgic brainrot..." before continuing to say that fat people existed throughout history.
Brain damage does not make you racist. A brain injury doesn't make you ignorant, or fatphobic, or unaware of history and politics. Stop fucking using my disability as a catch all to describe people you think are shitty. Y'all use it like it's a replacement for how people used to use the R-slur, which shows you learned absolutely nothing about why the R-slur was wrong to use and decided to throw in other disabilities instead. Fuck off and stop doing it.
(And don't do it with other disabilities either, because I know y'all do.)
I know a lot of people with brain injuries. They're smart, and funny, and compassionate. They learn about the world and care about social issues and wish they could go to protests if their disability won't allow them to. Are there right wing people with brain injuries? Sure, absolutely. But they are not right wing because they have a brain injury, and using any disability as an insult is still fucking ableist.
Tldr - stop using brain damage and brain injury as an insult. It's ableist and incredibly offensive.
Love, your local brain injured/brain damaged pal

if any of y'all see posts about house m.d on tumblr and think "I wanna watch that" you need to know that you can skip episodes. i would argue skipping certain episodes is vital to having an enjoyable house experience. house md is one of my favorite shows and has been genuinely important to me as an autistic queer chronically ill cane user. it also revels in it's main character being offensive for the sake of being offensive with that special early 2000s flair. if you care about the concept of fatphobia you will be unable to have a uncomplicated relationship with this show. for every earthshatteringly homoerotic hilson moment and every profoundly accurate disabled scene we the viewers must pay in some insane misogyny. that's just how it is on this bitch of a show

TLDR; don’t give tumblr money until they start making visible improvements towards accessibility
I’ve seen a few posts around about something people are calling crab day where you’re supposed to gift the crab button to your mutuals to support Tumblr financially. Please don’t participate in this unless Tumblr starts making noticeable improvements towards accessibility between now and then. It’s been 5 months of me trying to get the bare minimum of accessibility for photosensitive users or even just find out who I can talk to to get anywhere, and Tumblr is refusing to make any changes.
@photomatt has doubled down on the suggestion that you should just pay for ad-free or install an ad-blocker instead of listening to any of the suggestions photosensitive users have repeatedly made. Please do not give money to Tumblr until they show a commitment to accessibility because they will continue to ignore our requests if it doesn’t impact them financially.
Some of the requests we’ve made are:
1. Allow us to disable autoplay on browser as well as the app. This is an accessibility feature, not a data-saving feature, and should be treated as such.
2. Include ads in disabling of autoplay, along with other formats that currently get around the autoplay feature. Currently even if you have autoplay disabled you can still end up with flashing lights in your face every few posts from ads.
3. Improve the reporting process for strobing ads. The quick reporting process doesn’t provide good options to ensure the person reviewing the report realizes that it’s being reported for flashing lights so you have to hope they agree it’s either malicious or offensive and don’t just brush you off as abusing the report function. The more complicated reporting process involves getting a screenshot and the link that the ad brings you to, which requires lingering on the ad, which if you’re trying to report the ad for your safety, is dangerous. You can also still get the same ad 10 times a row after reporting it until it’s been reviewed. Which again, presents a danger to users.
4. Add a community label for flashing lights. Flashing lights are commonly untagged or mistagged, even sometimes maliciously. It would be extremely helpful to the photosensitive community to be able to add a warning to a post that doesn’t have one.
I’ve talked a lot about the photosensitive community in this post because that’s what I have personal experience with and what @photomatt has explicitly come out and just said to buy ad-free about, but there are definitely other accessibility issues that need to be addressed as well (like the alt text function needing improvements to make it accessible to users who need it and don’t use screenreaders, or the fact that a lot of tumblr official stuff still doesn’t seem to use the alt text feature themselves). Please feel free to add on accessibility issues I’ve missed in the reblogs.

Canada’s ground-breaking, hamstrung repair and interop laws
If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/11/15/radical-extremists/#sex-pest
When the GOP trifecta assumes power in just a few months, they will pass laws, and those laws will be terrible, and they will cast long, long shadows.
This is the story of how another far-right conservative government used its bulletproof majority to pass a wildly unpopular law that continues to stymie progress to this day. It's the story of Canada's Harper Conservative government, and two of its key ministers: Tony Clement and James Moore.
Starting in 1998, the US Trade Rep embarked on a long campaign to force every country in the world to enact a new kind of IP law: an "anticircumvention" law that would criminalize the production and use of tools that allowed people to use their own property in ways that the manufacturer disliked.
This first entered the US statute books with the 1998 passage of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), whose Section 1201 established a new felony for circumventing an "access control." Crucially, DMCA 1201's prohibition on circumvention did not confine itself to protecting copyright.
Circumventing an access control is a felony, even if you never violate copyright law. For example, if you circumvent the access control on your own printer to disable the processes that check to make sure you're using an official HP cartridge, HP can come after you.
You haven't violated any copyright, but the ink-checking code is a copyrighted work, and you had to circumvent a block in order to reach it. Thus, if I provide you a tool to escape HP's ink racket, I commit a felony with penalties of five years in prison and a $500k fine, for a first offense. So it is that HP ink costs more per ounce than the semen of a Kentucky Derby-winning stallion.
This was clearly a bad idea in 1998, though it wasn't clear how bad an idea it was at the time. In 1998, chips were expensive and underpowered. By 2010, a chip that cost less than a dollar could easily implement a DMCA-triggering access control, and manufacturers of all kinds were adding superfluous chips to everything from engine parts to smart lightbulbs whose sole purpose was to transform modification into felonies. This is what Jay Freeman calls "felony contempt of business-model."
So when the Harper government set out to import US-style anticircumvention law to Canada, Canadians were furious. A consultation on the proposal received 6,138 responses opposing the law, and 54 in support:
https://www.michaelgeist.ca/2010/04/copycon-final-numbers/
And yet, James Moore and Tony Clement pressed on. When asked how they could advance such an unpopular bill, opposed by experts and the general public alike, Moore told the International Chamber of Commerce that every objector who responded to his consultation was a "radical extremist" with a "babyish" approach to copyright:
https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/copyright-debate-turns-ugly-1.898216
As is so often the case, history vindicated the babyish radical extremists. The DMCA actually has an official way to keep score on this one. Every three years, the US Copyright Office invites public submissions for exemptions to DMCA 1201, creating a detailed, evidence-backed record of all the legitimate activities that anticircumvention law interferes with.
Unfortunately, "a record" is all we get out of this proceeding. Even though the Copyright Office is allowed to grant "exemptions," these don't mean what you think they mean. The statute is very clear on this: the US Copyright Office is required to grant exemptions for the act of circumvention, but is forbidden from granting exemptions for tools needed to carry out these acts.
This is headspinningly and deliberately obscure, but there's one anecdote from my long crusade against this stupid law that lays it bare. As I mentioned, the US Trade Rep has made the passage of DMCA-like laws in other countries a top priority since the Clinton years. In 2001, the EU adopted the EU Copyright Directive, whose Article 6 copy-pastes the provisions of DMCA 1201.
In 2003, I found myself in Oslo, debating the minister who'd just completed Norway's EUCD implementation. The minister was very proud of his law, boasting that he'd researched the flaws in other countries' anticircumvention laws and addressed them in Norway's law. For example, Norway's law explicitly allowed blind people to bypass access controls on ebooks in order to feed them into text-to-speech engines, Braille printers and other accessibility tools.
I knew where this was going. I asked the minister how this would work in practice. Could someone sell a blind person a tool to break the DRM on their ebooks? Of course not, that's totally illegal. Could a nonprofit blind rights group make such a tool and give it away to blind people? No, that's illegal too. What about hobbyists, could they make the tool for their blind friends? No, not that either.
OK, so how do blind people exercise their right to bypass access controls on ebooks they own so they can actually read them?
Here's how. Each blind person, all by themself, is expected to decompile and reverse-engineer Adobe Reader, locate a vulnerability in the code and write a new program that exploits that vulnerability to extract their ebooks. While blind people are individually empowered to undertake this otherwise prohibited activity, they must do so on their own: they can't share notes with one another on the process. They certainly can't give each other the circumvention program they write in this way:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/10/28/mcbroken/#my-milkshake-brings-all-the-lawyers-to-the-yard
That's what a use-only exemption is: the right to individually put a locked down device up on your own workbench, and, laboring in perfect secrecy, figure out how it works and then defeat the locks that stop you from changing those workings so they benefit you instead of the manufacturer. Without a "tools" exemption, a use exemption is basically a decorative ornament.
So the many use exemptions that the US Copyright Office has granted since 1998 really amount to nothing more than a list of defects in the DMCA that the Copyright Office has painstaking verified but is powerless to fix. We could probably save everyone a lot of time by scrapping the triennial exemptions process and replacing it with an permanent sign over the doors of the Library of Congress reading "Abandon hope, all ye who enter here."
All of this was well understood by 2010, when Moore and Clement were working on the Canadian version of the DMCA. All of this was explained in eye-watering detail to Moore and Clement, but was roundly ignored. I even had a go at it, publicly picking a fight with Moore on Twitter:
https://web.archive.org/web/20130407101911if_/http://eaves.ca/wp-content/uploads/2010/Conversations%20between%20@doctorow%20and%[email protected]
Moore and Clement rammed their proposal through in the next session of Parliament, passing it as Bill C-11 in 2012:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_Modernization_Act
This was something of a grand finale for the pair. Today, Moore is a faceless corporate lawyer, while Clement was last seen grifting covid PPE (Clement's political career ended abruptly when he sent dick pics to a young woman who turned out to be a pair of sextortionists from Cote D'Ivoire, and was revealed as a serial sex-pest in the ensuing scandal:)
https://globalnews.ca/news/4646287/tony-clement-instagram-women/
Even though Moore and Clement are long gone from public life, their signature achievement remains a Canadian disgrace, an anchor chain tied around the Canadian economy's throat, and an impediment to Canadian progress.
This week, two excellent new Canadian laws received royal assent: Bill C-244 is a broad, national Right to Repair law; and Bill C-294 is a broad, national interoperability law. Both laws establish the right to circumvent access controls for the purpose of fixing and improving things, something Canadians deserve and need.
But neither law contains a tools exemption. Like the blind people of Norway, a Canadian farmer who wants to attach a made-in-Canada Honeybee tool to their John Deere tractor is required to personally, individually reverse-engineer the John Deere tractor and modify it to talk to the Honeybee accessory, laboring in total secrecy:
https://www.theregister.com/2024/11/12/canada_right_to_repair/
Likewise the Canadian repair tech who fixes a smart speaker or a busted smartphone – they are legally permitted to circumvent in order to torture the device's repair codes out of it or force it to recognize a replacement part, but each technician must personally figure out how to get the device firmware to do this, without discussing it with anyone else.
Thus do Moore and Clement stand athwart Canadian self-reliance and economic development, shouting "STOP!" though both men have been out of politics for years.
There has never been a better time to hit Clement and Moore's political legacy over the head with a shovel and bury it in a shallow grave. Canadian technologists could be making a fortune creating circumvention devices that repair and improve devices marketed by foreign companies.
They could make circumvention tools to allow owners of consoles to play games by Canadian studios that are directly sold to Canadian gamers, bypassing the stores operated by Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo and the 30% commissions they charge. Canadian technologists could be making diagnostic tools that allow every auto-mechanic in Canada to fix any car manufactured anywhere in the world.
Canadian cloud servers could power devices long after their US-based manufacturers discontinue support for them, providing income to Canadian cloud companies and continued enjoyment for Canadian owners of these otherwise bricked gadgets.
Canada's gigantic auto-parts sector could clone the security chips that foreign auto manufacturers use to block the use of third party parts, and every Canadian could enjoy a steep discount every time they fix their cars. Every farmer could avail themselves of third party parts for their tractors, which they could install themselves, bypassing the $200 service call from a John Deere technician who does nothing more than look over the farmer's own repair and then types an unlock code into the tractor's console.
Every Canadian who prints out a shopping list or their kid's homework could use third party ink that sells for pennies per liter, rather than HP's official colored water that cost more than vintage Veuve Cliquot.
A Canadian e-waste dump generates five low-paid jobs per ton of waste, and that waste itself will poison the land and water for centuries to come. A circumvention-enabled Canadian repair sector could generate 150 skilled, high-paid community jobs that saves gadgets and the Earth, all while saving Canadians millions.
Canadians could enjoy the resliency that comes of having a domestic tech and repair sector, and could count on it through pandemics and Trumpian trade-war.
All of that and more could be ours, except for the cowardice and greed of Tony Clement and James Moore and the Harper Tories who voted C-11 into law in 2012.
Everything the "radical extremists" warned them of has come true. It's long past time Canadians tore up anticircumvention law and put the interests of the Canadian public and Canadian tech businesses ahead of the rent-seeking enshittification of American Big Tech.
Until we do that, we can keep on passing all the repair and interop laws we want, but each one will be hamstrung by Moore and Clement's "felony contempt of business model" law, and the contempt it showed for the Canadian people.

"Brain damage" only sounds like a harsh and offensive way to describe brain injuries because people constantly use it as an insult. It's a totally neutral descriptor of what it is. I have brain damage. My brain is damaged. It's not ableist to call it that, it's ableist to call people you don't like brain damaged because you think it's an inherently bad thing to be.
(Yes abled bodied neurodivergents, that includes you)

Hi! I’m working on an original character project that I want to include a lot of casual representation in (“casual” meaning that the characters don’t need a justification for being disabled/fat/POC/etc, they just are because people can and do exist that way in reality!)
I was wondering if you had any suggestions for finding resources for drawing facial differences(and maybe other visible disabilities), especially in a cartoony style. I’ve looked through the Facial Equality Week tag but would like to see more examples, and since my art is so… goofy, for lack of a better word, I would love any help I can get in integrating differences without being offensive or upsetting.
Sorry if this is a bother, and thank you for all that you do!
Hi!
I'm not aware of any guides for drawing facial differences specifically (or at least, good ones. There's 1 billion tutorials telling you that scars are just a Singular Line, always, but that's not... correct), but perhaps someone in the notes could help out?
For my own advice, you could check out this old post I made. Because you mentioned your art being cartoony, I would specifically urge you to not overexaggerate facial differences the way they often are. Prime example would be how a lot of cartoons portray strabismus;
It's just a funny gag to them rather than, IDK, how some of us look like. Not to mention that one of these is also a mockery of intellectually/developmentally disabled people with "Derp" in the name, but that's beside the point here.
It's the whole "the character is crazy/stupid/wild/whatever and that's why they have it" that's the problem with how it's often shown. You can also see it in how characters who don't even normally have it will be shown with it for a scene where they're saying something nonsensical, etc.
Another example that's nowhere near as rampant is the like... split-face thing with various facial differences being used. Mostly vitiligo but sometimes also facial palsy. I'm talking about this weirdly perfectly halved face that looks extremely different on each side, often used to signal that a character is two-faced or that the author doesn't know how vitiligo looks like.
[note: vitiligo also shows up on lighter skin. I wanted to make sure it's visible here for tutorial clarity purposes.]
This one is just weird because it straight up doesn't look like that? I have no idea where it came from, but it should go back there. Facial palsy doesn't make someone look like the antique comedy/tragedy theater mask.
Unless I'm forgetting some other annoying cartoon trope, these would be the big ones that you should stay away from.
Outside of that, it's really on a case by case basis on how a specific FD should be drawn because they're so different! A birthmark can just be a differently colored patch of skin, but a craniofacial difference would require some more changes to be included. Alopecia is well, lack of hair, and can be done very easily but ectrodactyly can be more complicated to show properly because of the limitations of a cartoony artstyle when it comes to hands. And while I do think it would be great to see more of those facial differences that tend to not be included in art at all, there's nothing wrong with deciding to go for the things you can represent more faithfully, especially if you're just starting.
I will say that if you're making an honest attempt at being respectful and trying to get it right, most of us will still be excited to see your work. Even if it's not perfect or has some inaccuracies. I will take a "'yeah more or less' correct with a happy, human character" over a "Very Technically correct but tagged as #tw burns and with blood splattered on them" any day.
Lastly, I wanted to share some art featuring characters with facial differences (and other visible disabilities) that are done in a cartoony, or at least somewhat simplistic artstyles (I'm using both terms very widely here, but like. Not Realism) - maybe it will give you some ideas!
Man with Treacher Collins syndrome (also one of the first pieces online where I saw a character with an FD portrayed in such a lovely way! A fav of mine) Girl with Pfeiffer syndrome Too many characters to count! Woman with burns Woman with a limb difference Multiple characters again Animation featuring people with Down syndrome [youtube] Multiple characters, including a girl with neurofibromatosis, a burn survivor, a girl with a cleft lip and another with TCS! [twitter]
If you have a more specific art question ("how do I draw a person with XYZ facial difference?") you can send me an ask on @saszor! I prefer to stick to the writing theme on this blog but would still like to help if you need it:-)
Hope this helps!

Hello!! Before I start, I just want to say that your green profile aesthetic is so prettyyy😭😭😭 it honestly reminds me of Pinterest idk. Can I request IT!girl!reader dating middle school Izuku? (im just in love w loser bf x drop dead gorg reader!)
tysm anonnie !!❤️❤️
im not sure if i did this right, but here u go 😭💕
~
you, an IT girl, dating izuku in middle school
- now this is quite the unexpectation
- what were you doing with the quirkless loser, Deku??
- you, so full of confidence with the way you carried yourself, loads of friends, grades of flying colors, beauty unmatched, a strong quirk. the list goes on
- him? the only thing remarkable is probably his will to keep going. just a quirkless outcast, a shameless nerd with unreachable dreams
- LITERALLY THIS LMFAOO:
- so why? it came as a GREAT surprise to see a post of you and Deku hanging out at a kitty cafe on insta. was it a dare? a prank? like ts gotta be some typa joke right
- WRONGG.
- they're merely scratching the surface, a surface that's not at all what it seems
- he's a really sweet boy, completely taken advantage of because of his meekness
- despite being quirkless, he was the realest person you've encountered in the school: observant, hard working, respectful. it's not like a quirk defines you anyway
- it's so embarrassing watching a classmate with the most ugly, useless, atrocious quirk you've ever witnessed poke fun at Deku
- like oh my GOSH dude they get humbled QUICK after you mention that you'd rather be quirkless
- like atp that ain't a quirk that's a disability 💀—not to be mean, but to make a point that Deku is just as capable of becoming a hero as anyone else
- going to school dances with Deku would be a lot more enjoyable if it weren't for those meddling whispers about you two. he often gets pushed to the sidelines 'cause you get swarmed by your friends and bombarded with questions :(
- but in the end, you came with him and mattered the most to him.
- he gets so nervous when he's around you, help him, he can't even look at you
- not in offense or anything. you make him feel all warm and fuzzy inside, and he can't help but feel enveloped by your presence
- you're this beautiful ray of light and he's kinda just..the shadow that follows after
"Izuku...Izuku did I do something wrong?"
"What? N-No! Of course not!"
"Then why aren't you looking at me?"
"Because you're—you're really pretty..."
"Pfft. You're really pretty too."
- Deku doesn't really initiate anything, thinking it'd be too lame or uncomfortable for you :( and if he does, he'll hesitate and drawback any ideas aforethought
- he follows you like a little puppy, always at your disposal
- he knows NOTHING about dating, only the note of going to amusements parks and sharing a sweet treat
- his confidence dwindles :( maybe he could learn a thing or two from you? <3
- when i tell you he was absolutley shocked when you confessed to him. his immediate reaction was playing it off as a joke
Wh..What? Oh...very funny, y/n...Huh..? YOU'RE SERIOUSOWUEIDEGHD!?!?
- he ALWAYS questions your feelings towards him—why me of all others? but i'm just a regular boy and you're..you? (gorgeous, pretty, beautiful, super cool, whole hearted, sweet...)
- and you can reassure everytime—because you're you and i like you!! a one of a kind.
- Deku doesn't have much to give to you, but he does have a big heart and alotta love
- maybe he is a loser, but he's your loser, and you wouldn't have him any other way
