the Helluva Boss Mission shorts, all coming out between Apology Tour and Ghostfuckers, serve multiple purposes. Obviously they bring much needed levity back to the show during a very emotionally heavy story arc, allowing the audience and the characters time to breathe. They also bring I.M.P.'s daily life back on screen, allowing the creators and audience to experience a little bit of that original concept of the show that the creators pivoted away from to follow the more plot and character heavy story they settled on. AND they give us a sense of time passing as we see Blitz go through the aftermath of The Breakup.

All of these are things I've seen other people talk about.

What I want to talk about is the fourth thing:

All three Mission Shorts are a reflection of how Blitz used to see Stolas.

An aggressive dangerous group of birds who say derogatory things to him and WILL kill him if he's not good enough at sex.

An obsessed fan who is impervious to all harm, talks down to him, uses pet names for him, fetishizes him, and only cares about the FANTASY of Blitz while not listening to or caring about him as a person at all.

Being trapped and treated like a source of entertainment, treated like less than a person, commodified for being violent by a duplicitous man surrounded by small horned pets who he infantilizes but who can be reasoned with.

All three of these shorts are throwing Blitz's own baggage around Stolas back into his face in weird subtle ways, and Blitz has to grapple with the fact that none of these ACTUALLY feel like Stolas to him. For as much as Stolas contributed to the situation they're now in, so did Blitz. Because Blitz has been reading him wrong this whole time.

When you create a setting from scratch, you have total control over it. You get to make the rules. You can't excuse a flaw in writing or presentation with "it is hell, it has to be this way!"

Here is one paraphrased example from Hazbin Hotel I've heard recently in response to a critique of calling the main characters too reliant on pinks/reds:

"All the characters have red in their color schemes because they are from the Pride ring and the rings are color coordinated."

While this gives an in-character/in-lore explanation for the color schemes, what it doesn't do is change the fact Hazbin Hotel's characters having a hard time standing out from the background. An in-character/in-lore justification should NOT be prioritized over the overall quality of a project.

As a writer, you have control over the constraints of your story. If you write yourself into a corner, you can't just throw up your hands and give up. You have to be willing to rework your lore and stories to make them stronger.

If excessive cursing is grating and making certain moments within your story less impactful, you should reel it in because it makes the presentation stronger. If your color based lore is causing the visuals of your project to suffer, it is time to reassess the lore.

Just because something is logically consistent within a world, doesn't make it a good writing/art choice.

A setting's rules should serve stories and characters, not the other way around.

Can I just say real quick, that I want to mourn the fact that we’ll never hear a Vivziepop female character talk vulgar about her vagina. Like, you know it’s true. How come her male characters can constantly joke about their dicks and have a lot of dirty sex jokes revolving around them but her females get nothing (outside of being called sluts and whores that is.) Like if you want your show to be edgy and raunchy at least go all out. I say this because Hazbin is getting real close, and I’m not expecting ANY vulgarity with Charlie and Vaggie, Viv’s only wlw couple. No sex jokes, no roughly kissing or anything, none of that. Of course I’m not saying they can’t be anything BUT sex jokes, but I am saying that it is extremely telling that all of Viv’s mlm characters can be open and dirty about themselves but Charlie and Vaggie are reduced down to just being gentle and soft. At most I’m expecting things like hand holding and kisses but that’s it, and it really does suck like…let your female characters be vulgar about their bodies too. (Outside of being slut shamed)

Watching Helluva Boss feels like I'm being launched back into middle school on fanfiction(dot)net where 90% of the mlm stories are written by st8 women fetishizing gay men who unapologetically tag their fic with *insert female character* bashing because they truly view women as evil and a threat to their soft gay boys. i always get annoyed over how the stolas and stella thing is depicted, as someone who related to Octavia's position in that. like woobified man who can do no wrong and one note evil woman is just. so frustrating in how people will jump over hurdles to defend stolas and get mad at people who want stella to have more development and who (rightfully) criticize the massive misogyny problem in the fandom and writing. like my mom was abusive and shitty! and my dad was a cheater and also shitty for other reasons and their relationship sucked! It was inherently complicated for both. Octavia is right to be angry at Stolas at the moment and however long as she needs to be, just as she can be angry at Stella if she wants. Stella you can say doesn't deserve a backstory or explanation but inherently she was *also* forced into an arranged marriage and forced to produce a child, whose status is tied to her marriage, you can't just say 'evil as birth'. Its just just a cop out to retroactively justify the shitty behavior of Stolas. Stolas does plenty of shitty things that the story jumps over backwards to justify and gloss over and Stella is just.. annoying abuser who is so one-dimensional you can't take seriously. I hope when her backstory is explored it focuses on her and not andrealphus. I hope she is somehow made complicated like Beatrice . Because she is quite literally a victim of misogyny. I honestly hope she is depicted as not a terrible mother somehow, even though the story so far just glosses over her relationship with Via almost entirely. I'm not even defending her abuse either. But female villains deserve the same development as male villains, and there is inherent nuance to her situation due to her position and being *also* forced into this arranged marriage (and how arranged marriage is historically worse for women but I digress) that you can't pretend isn't there even if Viv seems to want to so far. Evil women deserve good backstories. If people can go off and stan fucking valentino then people should be allowed to like Stella and the nuance she *could* and should capture. She isn't even depicted as a good villain, just stupid and annoying and impossible to take seriously.

Due to Brandon Rodgers' ever present role in the show and projecting his past drag type stereotypes onto Blitz just like previous characters, without any thought and keeping it at a basis of a joke. Hence, the eye candy passive 'progressive' lack of genuine queerness is really hard to take seriously when both seasons of Helluva are like this.

Alongside Moxxie, the both of them are used as gags and jokes around/about the two cis[?] demon men reduced to visual jokes and walking punchlines rather then actually letting the characters be characters. Moxxie does not contain good or better drag considering most instances are for the plot rather then the character wanting to be drag or explore outside of their assigned genders. Before you try to bring up:

He was the butt of the joke in all instances. Even the first time they performed drag was for a joke of a 'human disguise' that was quickly dropped post Unhappy Campers, examples being--

I get the anxiousness is the appeal of the character but really put it into perspective why the valentines merch is like this !!!!!

Is it just me, or does the anti Vivziepop hate-watcher crowd treat the female cast way worse than either Hellaverse show ever did?

They dismiss every installment that tries to give the female Helluva Boss characters more attention. (Queen Bee, Hell's Belles, Ghostfuckers, the ending of Seeing Stars.) It's either not good enough because male characters are also involved or it doesn't count because reasons. They ignore or downplay the roles of every woman in Hazbin Hotel. (Cherri Bomb in Addict, Velvette in episodes 2 and 3, Carmilla Carmine in episodes 3 and 7, Rosie in episode 7, Sera and Emily in episode 6, Lute in every episode she's in) Even Charlie is treated by Hazbin antis as if she's flat, one-note and might as well not even be the protagonist because she's not as "badass" or angsty as Alastor and Angel Dust. Carmilla is lumped with the other "badly-written and bland" Hellaverse women because......... she's a mother??? Vaggie has a tragic backstory revealed in episode 6 and said backstory is exactly the reason why, as Husk puts it, she judges others and hates herself. But she's also a love interest, and as well all know, that automatically makes you a bad character. They forget that Lute is way more competent than Adam, and she survives while he doesn't, meaning she's a recurring antagonist who's obviously gonna have a bigger role in season 2 while Adam is killed off for good. (By Niffty, no less.) Sera, Emily, Rosie and Cherri are basically chopped liver to them.

Maybe, just maybe, the reason why the Hellaverse hate-watchers think the female cast collectively sets women back 100 years is because they're not paying any attention to them. And we all know their minds would change real quick if Viv was a man. Seriously, how many times have male writers been praised by leftists for creating "strong female characters" ? Look at how much Mikasa Ackerman from Attack on Titan is treated like a sacred cow just for not being a damsel in distress, despite her not being written all that differently from Millie. Like, these people don't REALLY give a shit about the Hellaverse women characters as much as they say they do.
