Three succinct knocks rang out as you rapped your knuckles against the door frame. The man alone inside the room looked in your direction. Looking him over you noticed his striking features that were delicately framed by his black hair that was only a bit shorter than your own.Â
âAre you lost, miss?â He straightened up, âSorority recruitment is across the hall.â He turned back to setting up the chess set on the table in front of him.Â
âWhat?â you asked, confused, âNo, this is the chess club, is it not?âÂ
âIt is,â he didnât bother looking in your direction this time.Â
âThen I am in the right place,â you took a few steps into the room as he looked up at you again.Â
âGirls donât play chess.â he stifled a laugh.Â
âThereâs nothing in the university rules against gir-women joining recreational clubs.â You watched him sigh and snatch a notebook off the table.Â
âLook,â he walked closer to you and held out the notebook, âyou may watchâÂ
âI have my own notebook, thank you.â You turned on your heel and huffed into a chair near a chess set across the room. The man watched you for a moment before turning back to his task of setting up the chess boards. You could only assume that he was the president of the club, but could not wrap your head around why he was voted in. Â
After waiting for a few moments several more boys began trickling into the room, all of them giving you a once over. Have these people never seen a girl before?Â
âExcuse me miss,â one of the boys approached you and sat at the board nearest to you, âIâm Minghaoâ
âY/N,â you nodded and scribbled his name down in your book. You could feel Minghaoâs eyes on you, but you didnât feel as though you owed him any explanation. After a few minutes another boy who introduced himself as Wonwoo joined Minghao at the table.Â
The president announced that the meeting today would function âtournament styleâ and everyone should get the chance to have a match with each other. Perfect. Â
Wonwoo and Minghao played well, but Wonwoo had a bad habit of leaving his queen unprotected and Minghao always overutilized his rook. In the end, even with a queen out in the open, Wonwoo found a checkmate.Â
Minghao was unhappy with this result and challenged him to a rematch outside of club time which Wonwoo eagerly agreed to. You were finishing up your notes on their match when two new men appeared at your table introducing themselves as Mark and Yunho. Â
The remaining matches went by quickly, you felt the presidentâs eyes on you every so often, he wondered what you could possibly be taking such detailed notes about when you werenât even playing. Men came and went, all politely introducing themselves to you, clearly they donât take after their fearless leader in any capacity. Â
The âtournamentâ went on for a few hours, your ass was starting to go numb from the chair by the time it was called in favor of the president, who peculiarly you never had the opportunity to observe. He dismissed the club and they all filtered out as you finished up your notes. You heard his footsteps approaching as you dotted the last punctuation on the page. Â
âSo?â he started smugly, âEnjoy your observations?â he watched as you ripped out several pages of your own notebook. You rose out of your seat and square your shoulders, you shoved the pages into his chest and left the room without another word. He watched you leave the room, your skirt swishing around your knees. Â
Tearing his eyes from the door he looked down at the papers you left him. He read over them and quickly realized what it was you were doing all this time. Each member was written down and in detail you scrawled out every single missed check from each and every game played here today. Â
The bottom of the page reads âThe President: ?â Â Â Â Â Â
âWhat are you doing?â your roommate, Cami, flopped around in her bed, âItâs the first month of classes, thereâs no way you have course work alreadyâ
âI donâtâ you moved your rook, not looking away from the board, âRemember how I told you I was going to join the chess club?â
âYes?âÂ
âWell the stupid president wonât let me playâ you captured whiteâs queen, âso Iâm not able to practice with anyoneâ you heard her throw her blankets around and the clatter of her hand hitting her glasses,Â
âWhat?â she hissed, âhe canât do that can he?â she sat up in bed
âI mean,â you finally looked up at her, âHe didnât technically bar me from joiningâ Â
âLook at youâ she scoffed, âMaking you just sit there and watch when youâre the best player like ever!â
âI am nowhere near the best, Cami.âÂ
âWellâ she protested, âYouâre the best player I know!â
âIâm the only player you know,â you laughed.Â
âNot true!â she hopped off her bed, âTeach me.â She pulled out her desk chair and pulled it next to you. You quirk an eyebrow at her, âSeriously! Teaching is great practice plus you keep me awake with this dreadful lamp anywayâÂ
You swipe all of the pieces from the board and begin to set them back up in their proper places, you set the black in place and invite Cami to mirror them with the white on the other side. Starting off you teach her some simple and popular openings. For as airy as she tends to be she is an attentive listener and is able to grasp the basics quickly. Â
You feel like you could cry, no one has truly taken this much of an interest in you, besides your parents and some friends from high school. When you first moved in with Cami you were worried she would join a sorority on campus and never be around, and while you like your alone time, being alone is a difficult task. Â
âAnd how do you win?â Cami asked once the board was scarce with pieces. Â
âYou need a successful and all encompassing check,â you move your queen to trap her king sufficiently, âLike this one, check mateâ you reach over and softly lay the king on the board.Â
From your usual chair in the back of the room you strain to listen to the conversation happening between Wonwoo and the president, who you learned recently was named Jeonghan. The discussion looked heated and Wonwoo was hesitating at the door frame like a child being scolded. Â
Jeonghan threw his hands up, exasperated, and turned to make a beeline for you. You fumbled about trying to get your notebook open and to a page to make it look like you werenât just eavesdropping.Â
âYou heard all of that Iâm assuming,â he asked gruffly, âYouâre not as subtle as you would like to think.âÂ
âWhat?â you blinked up at him. He bent down to get closer to your face,Â
âDonât play dumb, we both know you arenât,â he nearly growled, âYou were listening to that entire conversationâÂ
âI was trying to,â you admitted with a roll of your eyes, âI couldnât hear a thing from over here,â He backs away from you and makes a subtle noise of approval. Â
âYouâre with Minghao today,â he said as he was turning to leave, which made you shoot up out of your chair. Â
âI actually get to play?â You blurted out, which caused him to turn back to you,Â
âYeah,â he scoffed at your enthusiasm, âUneven numbers, Minghao needs a partner, Wonwoo had to go tutor our idiot friend Mingyu, I guessâ You made a mental note to thank whoever Mingyu was profusely if you were to ever meet him. Jeonghan took your silence as an invitation to leave this conversation,as if he had ever needed one before. Â
You glanced around the room until you found Minghaoâs eyes on you. Â
âHi,â You offered your hand for him to shake as you approached his table. He easily took your hand and shook it. Â
âSit, sitâ he insisted, âItâs an honor to be the first to play you, sorry itâs under weird circumstances,â he chuckles awkwardly.   Â
You told Minghao not to worry about the circumstances, you were just happy to be playing after weeks of sitting around watching. With this he began the game, he utilized a simple opener and your first capture came quickly. This wasnât to say that Minghao wasnât a good player and didnât put up a fight. Â
You, however, were hungry to show everyone here that you were not to be messed with. Minghao felt that you were two steps ahead of him the entire match, he didnât understand how it felt like you were in his head and knew his moves. If it wasnât so impressive he would be infuriated.Â
He didnât even mind that you baited him quickly into a checkmate. He wanted to see you beat Jeonghan, to wipe the winning streak clean. Even more, he wanted to see Jeonghan get beat by a freshman, a wickedly smart and kind of scary freshman.   Â
âWhat are you doing?â Jeonghan asked from across the room where he was putting pieces back into boxes, âI need to clean that up and I canât very well do that when youâre still using itâ
âMinghao almost beat meâ You mumbled, not looking up from the board. You hear Jeonghan sigh and walk toward you. Â
âAlmosts donât matter in chess, you either win or you donâtâ he swiped your notebook from under your elbow, âAnd you wonâÂ
âGive it back, Yoon, Iâm not in the moodâ you attempted to grab it back from him. Â
âWhen are you ever,â he snorted, holding the book over his head. You shot out of your chair.
âGive it back!â you attempted to reach for it, âIâm trying to find weaknesses in my game and youâre acting like a child!âÂ
âFine,â he lowered the book with a look in his eyes that let you know that this would not be that easy, âplay me thenâ You blinked at him,Â
âReally?âÂ
âYouâre looking for weaknesses in your game, play meâ he pulled out the chair recently vacated by Minghao and sat down, âWell? I donât have all night." You took your seat, studying Jeonghanâs face. He has never been across from you as your opponent, let alone offered a match. He passes your notebook back to you and watches as you carefully turn to a new page, crack the spine, and scrawl out his name and the date at the top of the page. Â
You carefully move your first pawn, which in return Jeonghan moves his, beginning the dance. Your second pawn takes its place and you hear your opponent chuckle. Â
âWhat?â you spat defensively. Â
âOh nothing,â he hides his smile with his hand, âyouâre just predictable, you always start with attempting a queenâs gambitâ. Heat rushes to your cheeks and you immediately know you are at a disadvantage, Jeonghan knows your game and you know nothing of his. He delicately moves a second pawn forward, âQueenâs gambit declinedâ he sits back in his chair, thinking he already has you beat. Â
The first capture of the match is in you taking his first pawn, he returns the favor by taking yours quickly. The two of you go back and forth like this for several turns. You realize quickly that he is very much your equal, he is smart and clever, but he plays rigidly and by the book. By the book players are usually easy for you to handle. Â
Jeonghan was different, itâs almost as if he knew your moves before you made them, and admittedly he kind of did. Not well enough, you were nervous in the middle of the match but now you were sure that you could lure him into a checkmate within three moves.Â
Letting him capture your rook was a small sacrifice. Luring him into a false sense of security letting him take this piece and your queen earlier in the game, so that your second rook could move to take his queen and leaving his king open. Attempting to move his king out of the line of fire from your rook only placed it in harm's way at the hands of your bishop. Â
âCheckmateâ you declared. Jeonghan sat quietly, you saw the math he was doing in his mind by the way his eyes were flitting around the board, calculating his mistakes. You gathered your things and swiped them into your arms and turned to leave. Â
Fingers encircled your wrist and pulled you to face him. Judging by the look on his face he did not think before he acted for once, âIf it means so much to you, I wonât tell anyone I beat you,â you offered, rolling your eyes.Â
âYouâre infuriatingly irritatingâ was the last thing he said before pulling you closer and pressing his soft lips to yours. You stood perfectly still, shocked at the sudden development, Jeonghan didnât push until you parted your lips. With this he deepened the kiss, his mouth tasted of tobacco, the expensive kind. His skin was warm against yours, and you werenât sure why you didnât entirely hate this exchange. Â
Tentatively, you placed your hands on his hips, your notebook falling to the floor forgotten. Jeonghan swiped his tongue into your mouth and you let him. He felt your fingers grip for dear life and tried to ignore the fact that the gesture caused his head to swim. He had the faintest idea of why he kissed you and even less of an idea on why you let him but he would not complain. He tangled his hands in your hair.   Â
He pulled your lip between his teeth and it snapped something in you, you pressed your thighs together and sighed. When Jeonghan moved to plant kisses just below your ear you realized what was happening and pushed back against his chest.Â
âWhat the hell are you doing?âÂ
âYou seemed to enjoy it.â he sighed pushing a hand through his hair. Â
âI donât know what this is,â you picked up your notebook, âbut find someone else to help you out next time you get hard over a girl beating youâ          Â
You shifted uncomfortably in the doorway of the fraternity house as Cami was informing the poor boy working the door who she was and who the two of you were intending to meet inside. Finally, after what felt like an eternity out on the porch, he stepped aside and the two of you shuffled past him. The inside of the house was nothing special, it smelled of smoke and sweat. There were groups of people scattered about talking and drinking. Â
Cami put a hand on your arm and began to pull you further into the house, âCome on!â she shouted over the noise, âIâm meeting him in the kitchen!â and she began weaving her way through the house, as if she had done this a thousand times before. Â
The kitchen was open and frankly dirty. There was a couple making out against the counter closest to where your roommate dragged you. Â
âY/N, this is Mingyu, the guy I told you about,â she smiled up at him, âand this is Y/N, my roommateâ Â
âNice to meet you,â Mingyu smiled at you momentarily before turning his attention back to the girl he actually invited to this party. You were surprised, you figured it would have taken longer than five minutes for you to start wondering why you came here in the first place. You were starting to feel boxed in, the couple on the counter was getting dangerously close to exposing themselves to you, and Mingyu was whispering close to your roommate's ear. You could only imagine the filthy things he was surely saying to her, judging by the scarlet blush rising up her neck and the giddy smile playing at her lips. Â
âTake this,â a familiar voice cut through the panic, a small glass being pressed into your hand. Looking up, Jeonghan had a matching glass up to his lips, looking down at you expectantly. You followed suit and the two of you tipped the glasses back together. The liquid burned your throat and you sputtered a cough as you felt the heat settle in your belly. âWoah,â he stifled a laugh, âNever had a drink before, noted,â he filled up his shot glass with water from the sink and traded it for your empty glass. He guided it to your lips and disappeared down the hall, just as quickly as he approached.
The water dulled the burn in your throat. During your exchange with Jeonghan your roommate and Mingyu disappeared somewhere, sighing you left the kitchen to find them or somewhere quiet to sit down, whichever came first. Â
As it turned out, at a party there are few places unoccupied by people. You took to walking laps around the bottom floor of the house looking out for anyone leaving or a room you missed. On lap one thousand (give or take) you heard your roommateâs laugh cut through the dull thrum of the music from the turntable in the living room. You looked toward where you heard her, your shoulders slumped seeing Mingyu lead her up the stairs, cursing under your breath you stomped through the kitchen and into the first door you came across.Â
You plop to the ground and cross your arms over your chest, if anyone were to be looking at you right now youâre sure you would look like a petulant child. Youâre not even sure why youâre angry, you knew she would end up hooking up with this guy tonight. Walking home could be an option, however itâs getting coldâŠand do you even remember how to get back? Donât parties like this typically have sober drivers? But Iâm not drunkâŠI only had whatever Jeonghan gave me, you thought, Jeonghan! You could find him, but how embarrassing would it be to crawl to him for help right now? He would use it against you forever and you are as good as kicked out of the chess club after this! What would have been the point of any of this if you canât play chess? This stupid situation with Jeonghan would have been for naught. Â
Your thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the door opening, you scramble to situate yourself in this damned skirt to have any semblance of appropriateness for whoever is coming through that door. Â
âWhat are you doing in the laundry room?â you could hear the smirk in his tone before you even looked up. Jeonghan slipped into the small room, which when looking around you realized it was in fact the laundry room. He closed the door behind him with the hand not occupied with a bottle of liquor and a cigarette perched between his pointer and middle fingers. Scooting back you pressed your back against the washing machine and stretched your legs straight in front of you. Jeonghan grunted while sitting down on the floor next to you, his back up against the dryer. He set down the bottle and two of those little glasses from earlier on the floor in front of him. Â
âThere was nowhere else to sitâŠâ You offered quietly. âMy stupid roommate went upstairs with some guy and she is the only reason Iâm even at this fucking party! I wanted to stay home tonight, but she dragged me out here andâand are you trying to get me drunk?â you interrupted yourself, eyes flicking between the contents on the floor and Jeonghan. He cracked a smile, not a smirk, a smile, at your question. Â
âNo, Dove,â he chuckled sticking the cigarette between his lips, âIâm trying to get you to loosen up for once,â he brought his hand above your thigh, hesitating in the air for only a moment before placing it down slightly above your knee, kneading the flesh there. Jeonghan had kissed you last week, but this feltâŠintimate, not angry. Before you had the chance to yell at him he brought his hand back to his lap, âYouâre tense.âÂ
âYeah, not a great night,â you pointed out, âAnd it seems like it is getting weird now,â he rolled his eyes at your addition and began pouring the liquid into the two glasses. Â
âTake another shot with me, will you?â he attempted to hand you the glass, âbefore I decide youâve annoyed me too much for one nightâÂ
âNoâÂ
âY/N please, donât be so insufferable for once,â he moved his glass to his lips and removed the cigarette, which admittedly was distracting enough for you to almost give in. You held strong. Jeonghan clicked his tongue disapprovingly and threw back the contents of the glass. He brought his free hand and scrubbed his face, âFine, letâs play a game.â he poured himself another shot.Â
âWhat kind of game?â
âReally thatâs all it took?â he looked at you, his eyes starting to shine with the alcohol, âBeggars canât be choosers, I suppose.â he taps the glass with his fingers, a habit that manifests when heâs thinking, youâve noticed throughout his chess matches,Â
âYouâre making a game up,â you point out nonchalantly,Â
âWhat?â the drumming stops for a moment, âNo, Iâm remembering the rulesâ
âNo youâre not, tell me about your made up game, Yoonâ
âItâs a real gameâŠanyway, rules are simple, you ask me a question, I answer, then you answer. If you donât want to answer, you take a shot, if we both answer, we both take a shotâ
âThose rules donât make senseâ âYes they do, who was the first LP you ever got?â you were taken aback by the tameness of his question, but you figured he was just getting started. Â
âThe Blues and the Abstract Truth by Oliver NelsonâÂ
âJazz?â he scoffed, âHave you ever thought about not being boring?âÂ
âHave you ever thought about being a decent person?â
âDonât get unglued,â he rolled his eyes, âmine was NiceânâEasy by Frank Sinatraâ With that he tipped his glass back and emptied it, you followed suit and tried not to cough this time. He gestured to you seemingly inviting you to ask a question of your own. You thought for a moment,Â
âWhy do you play chess?â you asked.Â
âMy dad figured it would be a good skill to haveâ he shrugged, âBut I think it has something to do with the fact that the world chess champion was, and still is, a Soviet. I donât really care about that though, I just like to play, Iâm good at it.â
âYou only play chess because youâre good at it?â you said flatly
âAh ahâ he tsked, âYou already asked your question, so either answer or drink upâ
âFine,â you sighed with a pointed look in his direction, âMy grandpa taught me, I always watched him and his buddy play when he babysat me. I learned by watching and then eventually playing, and beating, both of them.âÂ
âLearning chess just by watching,â he mumbled and shook his head. âGimme,â his lithe fingers took the glass from your hand, set it on the floor next to his and poured another round. You both drank the shot with no complaint. Â
The game continued like this for a while, Jeonghan never asking anything that stumped you, and in return he answered every question of yours. You werenât sure what being drunk actually felt like but if someone told you this was it you would believe them. Your muscles relaxed more than you can remember in recent months, your vision was slightly blurry, and you felt a pleasant buzz in your brain. Jeonghan was slumped against the dryer and his head leaned on your shoulder. Â
âWhenâs your birthday?â Jeonghan asked, playing with your fingers lightly.  Â
âJanuary 2âÂ
âComing up,â he noted, âMine was October 4â
âHow old are you now?âÂ
â22â he sighed, âgraduating in Mayâ You knew Jeonghan was older than you, but you hadnât thought about the fact that he would be actually graduating, leaving. Something about that made you sick to your stomach in a way, but you werenât sure why, donât you hate him?
âIâll be 19 next monthâ you mumbled. He shifted his body to sit up and look at you. His eyes were glassy and heavy, physical evidence of the alcohol thrumming in his system. Â
âAre you drunk?â he askedÂ
âI have no earthly idea, Hanâ he smiled at the nickname. He reached over to cup your cheek in his hand, unconsciously you melted into him.Â
âI might be,â he mumbled, and even in your intoxicated state you couldnât miss the way his eyes flicked from yours to your lips, only for a moment. After what felt like ages he connected his lips to yours. The kiss was sweet, his lips were warm and he didnât rush it. He held you as his tongue swiped against your bottom lip, requesting entrance. Once that entrance was granted it was as if the floodgates opened for him. Both of his hands were in your hair and he was licking into your mouth. Jeonghan tasted of the alcohol the two of you had been drinking the entire night, different from the taste on his lips last time. Jeonghan curiously tugged at the hair around his fingers. Â
Butterflies, or something like that but infinitely more intense, erupted in your stomach. The suddenness of it all allowed a whine to escape your lips. With that Jeonghan pulled back from you but stayed close enough for your noses to still be touching.Â
âI think you should start coming to meetings early,â he panted. The only response you could muster was a nod, and an attempt to bring his lips back to yours. He pulled back against your request, and much to your dismay the wicked smirk was back on his face, âY/N, are you a virgin?â You were taken aback by the question, you backed away from him and grabbed the bottle on the floor. You forwent the shot glass and just took a long pull from the lip. He watched you down the burning liquid before nodding, âSo thatâs a yes,â he settled back against the dryer and watched you flounder. Â
âYou donât know that!â you stood up, feeling wobbly on your feet, âMaybe Iâm just being a ladyâÂ
âWoah,â he stood up and wrapped his arm around your waist in an attempt to steady you, âbut it doesnât really matter, I trapped you, even a nonanswer would have told me what I wanted to know, I won and you know it.â You attempted to hit his chest but the way he was holding you proved it impossible. He maneuvered you to sit back down, âSit right here, Iâm gonna go find your roommate and get you home.â   Â
The walk back to your dorm was quicker than you thought it was, but that could be on account of the alcohol warming your skin. Jeonghan informed you that your roommate had decided to stay the night with Mingyu back at the house so the responsibility of getting your drunk self home fell on him. Serves him right, heâs the one who got you to this state in the first place. Your arm linked with his and his arm around your waist he walked the short trek very carefully, because he truly was not sober himself.
He fished your room key out of your pocket and let the two of you into your room. He blinked to adjust to the lower light, the room was only illuminated by the lamp on your desk that you must have forgotten to turn out before leaving earlier in the night. Moving further into the room he helped you sit down on the bed. On the desk there was a chess board with a half finished game set up. He smiled to himself moving closer to see that the pieces of paper strewn about were the notes you always take during matches with him. Youâre replaying matches between the two of you he realized. Â
âY/Nâ he called, tearing his eyes away from the pretty way your handwriting captures his name, âYou gotta change.â
âTired,â you grumbled from the bed. He moved towards you and attempted to pull you up. Â
âCome on, you canât sleep in thisâ he begged, âFine! Where do you keep your pajamas?â
âTop drawerâ
He moved the short distance to your dresser and opened the top drawer. He flushed seeing your undergarments being housed in the same space as your pajamas but he tried to ignore the feeling in his stomach. He pulled out the first nightgown he found and moved back to you. Â
âOkay, undressâ he was met with protest noises. He sighed and moved to the hem on your shirt, âIâm going to help you and then leave, okay?â he waited for your approval and then began lifting your shirt up over your head. He felt perverted in a way as he watched each inch of your skin come into view and then the clothed swell of your breasts. The situation was in no way sexual and he had no plans to take advantage, but he had never seen you in a vulnerable state before. You were softer than you often let on, something he almost didnât believe. Â
He removed the shirt completely and moved to unclasp your bra. He hesitated only slightly before taking the plunge. He removed the piece of fabric and quickly, and unceremoniously shoved the nightgown over your head. Finally, you were dressed for bed and he helped you under the covers. Â
Soon he heard your soft snores and took this as his signal to leave. Turning out the lamp he pressed his lips to your forehead, hoping it didnât hurt too terribly in the morning. Â
âGoodnight, Y/Nâ     Â
The gentle sting of teeth against your neck paired with the vice grip on your thigh under your skirt almost sent you into a frenzy.   Â
âJeonghanâ you shied away from his mouth, he grunted and chased you in response, âJeonghan!â you hissed and pulled his hair until his lips separated from your neck.
âWhat?â he whispered, his eyes heavy and clouded with lust.Â
âThe boys will be here in,â you twisted to check your watch, âTwenty minutes and I would rather not have them distracted by fresh hickies on my neck for the entire meeting.â
âAnd why not?â he attempted to connect to the spot below your ear again, âThey might respect you more if they know youâre getting someâÂ
âThey respect me just fine!â you shove against his shoulder, but there werenât many places for him to go in the small closet. His hand stayed gripped on your thigh.
âOkay, okayâ he conceded, taking back his place crowding you against the wall behind you. âYouâre tense againâ a squeeze to your thigh, âlet me helpâ his hand slowly traveled higher, leaving goosebumps in its wake.Â
All you could do was nod. Â
A flash of a smirk and he is wedging his thigh between your knees, âKeep âem spreadâ he commanded. His hand continued up and up until - oh - his thumb pressed that delicious bundle of nerves, separated only by the thin cotton of your underwear. He watches your face as you bite your lip, if he was a better man he wouldnât be doing this in the supply closet, but the promise of seeing you unspool was too delicious. Heâll make it up to you someday, he promises himself.        Â
He started with slow torturous circles, refusing to move the barrier. The touches are too feather light, you resist the urge to rut up against him in an attempt to increase the friction. This didnât stop the pathetic whine from escaping your lips. âWhat was that?â Jeonghan teased, increasing the pressure on your clit.      Â
âPleaseâŠâ you screwed your eyes shut.Â
âIs this what you want?â he slid your underwear to the side and gathered your arousal on his fingers. Nodding you felt him slip in a finger experimentally. You bucked your hips to meet him, âEagerâ he commented nonchalantly. The tightness in his pants reminded him that time was of the essence and he slipped in another finger. Â
You bit your lip to keep quiet, no matter how much Jeonghan encouraged you to let him hear you. His long fingers reached a spot inside you that you didnât know existed with ease. You rocked on his fingers, feeling a tightness in your stomach begin to gather. Â
Jeonghan pulled aside the neck of your sweater to access a new swath of skin untouched by him until now. He sucked a deep bruise just below your collarbone as you felt the snap in your stomach. Â
The euphoria washed over you in waves and Jeonghan continued his ruminations until you came down from your high. Once you were more lucid, you noticed the gaping neck of your sweater. Your hand flew to where the top two buttons once were and gasped. Â
âYou ripped the buttons off my sweater, you assâ
âRight like I meant to!â he began to scan the cluttered floor for the buttons. Â
âWell I donât have the time to go back to changeâ you gritted your teeth, âThis was my favorite sweaterâ you stormed out of the closet, leaving Jeonghanâs apology to die on his lips. What you didnât expect was Minghao sitting at the table closest to you, reading. You clutched your sweater, careful to cover your new mark. He tore his eyes away from his book and just looked at you, it felt like he was looking right through you. Â
You open your mouth to explain yourself but the sound of Mark bursting through the door with Yunho stole the moment away from you. Minghao gave a curt nod of understanding and snapped his book closed. Jeonghan entered the room, clearly trying not to look flushed. You shot him a pointed look and proceeded to sit in front of an empty chess board.Â
âPair up,â he mumbled, âscrimmages todayâ and throws himself into the chair across from you. âTake that look off your face, Doveâ you blinked at him, not realizing there was even a look, you were just surprised he was willingly choosing you, in front of everyone. However, if he was going to act like this, you could make the meeting Hell too.Â
His timer clicked, he made his first move. Jeonghan was going to lose this match, you stretched your legs, leaving your foot next to his. You felt his eyes boring into your skull as you were making your opening. Your timer clicked. Jeonghan laced his fingers under his chin, it would look like he was thinking, but you knew better, he was trying to figure you out this time. He reached to move his knight and you trailed your foot up his leg, disrupting his trousers. Placing his knight down with a definitive thunk he looked up at you with widened eyes. Â
âYour timer, Jeonghanâ you smirked. Click. Jeonghan watched your subsequent move, trying desperately to ignore the tightness in the crotch of his pants. You played it safe for a majority of the game, letting Jeonghan believe that you were the one distracted by your nonsense. You let him have some meaningless captures. Â
His fingers werenât drumming on the desk, he felt confident. You captured his bishop. You could easily have a checkmate within four or five moves. You brought his bishop to your lips and hit your timer. You looked at him from under your lashes and waited.Â
Jeonghan watched the white piece rest against your pretty lips, what was wrong with him? You were doing next to nothing but the hardness in his pants was almost painful at this point. His hesitancy was evident,Â
âI knowâ you whispered against the bishop, âItâs just so hardâ Jeonghan had to bite his lip to keep from whimpering. He made a quick careless move and hit the timer. Smiling, you set the bishop aside and moved your queen into position, âCheckmate.âÂ
âWhat is wrong with you?â
The only sound in your room was the soft drag of the white bishop you moved across your chess board. Cami was out, probably with Mingyu, as she is most nights nowadays. The game you were playing against yourself was almost finished and you were planning to retire to bed or to do some reading afterwards. Even you had your limit on the amount of chess you could play in a day. Â
You picked up the black knight thinking to capture a white pawn when there was a knock at your door. Untangling yourself from the position that was comfortable until you thought about it you stretched your legs and padded to the door. You donât tend to get visitors unless Cami is home so youâre not sure who this could be.    Â
Swinging the door open you see the familiar shape of Jeonghan standing in the hallway, illuminated by the fluorescent lighting. He was dressed more casually than youâd ever seen him, clad in an oversized t-shirt and pair of shorts with the faded logo of what you guessed was his high school hanging off his hips. You fold your arms over your chest, suddenly very aware of your lack of bra.Â
âAre you stalking me now, Yoon?â he blinked at you a couple times before pushing past you into your room and uttering,Â
âDo you really not remember?â he sits at your desk in front of the almost finished chess game, âCan I sit here?âÂ
âYou already are,â you raised an eyebrow as you took a seat across from him on your bed. Seeing Jeonghan comfortable and relaxed in the low light of your room was strange, but not entirely off putting. Almost as if he belonged here in a way. âRemember what?â
âI brought you home after Seungcheolâs party when Cami ditched youâ he studied the remaining pieces on the board. Jeonghan doesnât know when he started remembering things, like the name of your roommate, about you. He didnât mind having you in his head, but he wasnât aware just how often you were on his mind until this moment, seeing you bathed in the lamp light of your room.      Â
âWait,â your cheeks grew red and you felt the heat in them rise. Â
âYes, I changed your clothes, no I didnât look, but at this point does it matter?â His brown eyes gazed up at you before they trailed down your body, he realized that this is the first time he has seen you in your casual attire since that night.Â
âMaybe notâŠâ You mumble, âBut it certainly did at the time.â He scoffed and rolled his eyes and settled them back on the chess board in front of him. You watched as he moved the rook into position,Â
âCheckmateâ he smirked smugly,Â
âI played that game myself, donât think youâve beaten me because you finished it.â He clicked his tongue disapprovingly at your comment and stood up from the chair and moved toward you. He stood in front of you and tapped your knee, you spread your legs so he could stand between them, you mentally cursed yourself for the automatic response. Moving in between your knees he ran his hands through your hair, he looked down at you, his face softer than youâd seen it in a while. His features were beautiful when he was concentrated and vengeful during a match but the soft moments between were quickly becoming your favorites.Â
âHi,â he whispered, he could almost laugh, he felt so boyish. âAre you feeling okay?âÂ
âHan,â you laughed, âyou donât need an excuse to kiss me, if thatâs what youâre looking forâÂ
âOkay Ms. Smarty Pants,â he ducked his head to press his lips to yours. What felt like lightning crackled between your lips and into your stomach, he hadnât touched you let alone kissed you since that day that you teased him at the meeting in front of everyone. Partly because you stopped showing up early, and partly because he was clearly mad at you for the spectacle you caused. He had never anticipated Wonwoo of all people to ask him what that was all about.Â
A hand trailed from your hair down to your chest. You whined as Jeonghan took a handful of your breast and kneaded it underneath his fingers. He deepened the kiss at the sounds you were making. His teeth grazed your lip as he pinched your nipple between his fingers. His other hand was gripping your bare thigh. Â
He broke the kiss and grabbed the loose fabric of your nightgown and pulled it up around your hips. Hooking his thumbs under the waistband of your panties he mutters,Â
âCan we try something?â All you could do was nod in response. He swiftly shimmied the fabric down and onto the floor. âLet me know if itâs too much for you, okay?âÂ
Jeonghan sank to his knees in front of you, his mouth level with your bare cunt. He takes his time sucking deep bruises into your thighs, he was only going to do it once but the sweet noises you made in response were too beautiful to ignore. You felt the sting of teeth on the last bruise, and then the soothing sensation of his tongue. In an attempt to get his long hair out of the way he raked his hand through it and leveled himself with your heat. Â
He licked the first fat stripe up your cunt, the warmth of his mouth on you was a new and spectacular feeling. He felt all encompassing, you were surrounded by him, and you couldnât imagine anything better in this moment. He flattened his tongue against you and dragged it through your folds slowly. Your eyes screwed shut at the overwhelming sensation.Â
His lips wrapped around your swollen clit and began to suck. Jeonghan felt absolutely high on the sounds he was eliciting from you. Slowly, he moved from your clit to your entrance and experimentally dipped inside. You filled the room with quiet moans as he began to pump his tongue in and out of you. The coil in your stomach began to tighten, you bucked your hips up searching for stimulation on your clit. Jeonghan pulled away from you and you shivered at the lack of warmth. He blew lightly into your cunt, a whine getting pulled from your throat. Â
âJust wait, Dove, Iâll take care of you.â He stood and helped you out of the nightgown the rest of the way. You sat up slightly and reached for his shirt. He looked beautiful with the flush of want on his cheeks and the sheen of you on his chin. He smiled down at you and allowed you to peel off his shirt, âLay down all the wayâ he whispered as he pulled off the rest of his clothes. You readjusted on the bed. He crawled on top of you, âAre you okay with this?â You nodded, you let your eyes wander down his body and caught a glimpse of his stiff cock, leaking and angry. The tension in your thighs returned, nervous for this next step. Â
âHey,â he whispered, âlook at meâ, your eyes finding his, âRelax for me, Dove. We donât have to do this if you donât want toâ Â
âI want to,â you whispered. He smiled softly at you and pressed his lips to yours. He reached down and stroked his cock a few times before lining up at your entrance. You took a deep breath. Â
âIâm serious this time, you need to relax,â his eyes were dark with lust but ultimately serious. He reached to knead the muscle of your plush thigh. You nodded to show him you understood and tried to release some tension you were holding. Â
You felt the head of his cock push past your entrance. The feeling was entirely different to what you were used to with his fingers. He moved slowly, scared to overwhelm you. He stayed still for several agonizing minutes, allowing you to adjust to the new sensation. Â
âYou can move now,â you breathed out quietly. He nodded and slowly began to rock his hips. It was almost as if you could feel every single vein dragging against your walls. The feeling was nothing short of intoxicating, you felt so full. Â
âOh Dove,â his voice was deeper than you have ever heard it, âyou feel so perfect, like you were made for me.â His praises went straight to your core and you couldnât help but moan. âIf you keep,â he grunted, âsounding perfect like that I wonât last.âÂ
He doesnât. Neither do you. He didnât expect you to, you donât last long on his fingers, his cock was a different story entirely. What he didnât expect was how fast he was spent. He thinks he meant it when he said you were perfect, he fit inside of you just right. Thinking about how perfect you were had him releasing hot white spurts of himself inside of you. Â
He leaned forward to move the sweaty pieces of hair from your forehead and pressed a kiss to your temple. Â
âYou okay, Dove?âÂ
âIâm fab,â you breathed. Jeonghan laughed and slowly pulled out of you. He took a moment to look at your spent cunt, leaking with him. Â
âUh, let me get you cleaned up,â he stumbled out of the bed and moved toward your collection of bath towels. He returned with one and helped clean you up. He rummaged through your drawer, retrieved a clean set of underwear and sent you to the bathroom. He got himself dressed and sat on the bed. He ran his hands through his hair. Â
When you came back you laid back down together. You draped your legs over his. The two of you stayed this way for what felt like hours. You talked about everything, he asked you about your classes, how youâre adjusting to being away from home, and your impressions of the guys in the chess club. Â
Talking to Jeonghan was easy, much easier than your first impression had led you to believe. Eventually, you fell asleep mid sentence. Cute, Jeonghan thought. He was starting to realize he found most of the things you did cute. Â
He slipped out of your bed and covered you with the blanket. Before he left he slipped your ruined sweater from where it was draped haphazardly over the foot of your bed. With that, he was out of the room and bounding down the hall.   Â
              Â
  Â
âY/N! Wait up!â Turning around you see Minghao jogging to catch up with you. You smile at him as he joins you, âWhere you headed?âÂ
âThe teaching building,â you jerked your head in the direction of the building. Â
âLet me walk with you, Iâm going to the art building, but I need to ask you about something.â he gestured for you to keep walking. You nodded and began the walk, âSo what on Earth are you doing?âÂ
âWhat?â you raised an eyebrow, âIâm going to class?âÂ
âNoâ he shook his head, âWith Jeonghanâ you had to force yourself to keep walking and not stop right there in the middle of the sidewalk and gawk at him, âOh come on, Y/N Iâm not stupidâÂ
âI never said you were,â you shifted your gaze to the ground, âBut I have no idea what youâre talking aboutâ
âYes you doâ A telling silence fell between the two of you for a few minutes before you reached the front of the art building. Minghao stopped walking and put a hand on your shoulder, âListen itâs not my business, but whatever game youâre playing better have a good reason.â he sighed, âI donât know if you actually like him or what this bullshit is, but be careful,â
âCareful?âÂ
âYouâre a threat to him, Y/Nâ you must look as confused as you feel because he continues, âIâm good at chess, Wonwooâs good at chess, Jeonghan is great at chess, but Y/N, youâre phenomenal at chess.âÂ
âSo?â you protest, âItâs just a club, this doesnât mean anything does it?âÂ
âThe competition season is coming up,â he offered, âYouâll be asked to be on the team by the faculty supervisor, so will Jeonghan, and hopefully me and Wonwoo, but thereâs the individual tournament to worry about.â    Â
âOkay?â you huff, âAnd?â you try to see the point Minghao is making.      Â
âJustâŠâ he sighs, âIâm worried heâs using you. Heâs never lost the collegiate division, Y/Nâ you nodded, taking in what he was suggesting, âYouâve painted yourself as a threat to him winning that title for his last year. Thatâs why it matters, thatâs what he cares about.â
âIsnât he your friend?â
âWell, yes,â Minghao blinked at you, âDoesnât that put me in the exact position to know what he might be capable of?âÂ
âIf Iâm selected, Iâll try my best, win or loseâ You assured him. Â
âI know you will, just be careful, donât get distractedâ He turns toward the entrance of the art building, âAnd stop using the supply closet, you have more dignity than thatâ you feel your face heat up and you turn on your heel toward the teaching building.   Â
If anyone could see the great asshole, Jeonghan Yoon right now Mingyu could die happy. He bounded down the stairs and took in the sight of the man himself with a sewing needle snug between his teeth, instead of the usual cigarette. Â
âOh you couldnât be more keen on her, huh?â Mingyu plopped down on the couch next to the sweater Jeonghan had carefully spread over the cushion between himself and the younger man.Â
âShut your fucking trap, Kim,â Jeonghan mumbled around the needle.   Â
âShe has you sewing,â Mingyu stifled a laugh. Â
âAs if you have room to talk,â Jeonghan ripped the needle from his mouth, âCami has you just about as tied up,â Mingyu blinked at him, âOh come on! You donât need tutoring, let alone from Wonwoo, youâre not in any of the same classes.âÂ
âI donât know what youâre talking about,â Mingyu attempted to insist but avoiding Jeonghanâs eyes gave him away. Â
âObviously you do, Y/N was mad about not being able to play, so you and Cami decided to take matters of my club into your own hands,â he began to thread the needle.  Â
âYou couldâve let her play,â Mingyu shrugged watching Jeonghan struggle to find the simplest way to put the thread through the hole. Â
âShe couldâve earned her spot like everyone elseâ he muttered, âBesides thereâs nothing between her and I so thereâs no need to compareâ
âYou made the comparisonâŠâ Mingyu pointed out, confused. Â
âNo I didnât,â the thread made it through the hole in the needle. Mingyu opened and closed his mouth, not sure what his friend was getting at. Jeonghan claiming that there was nothing going on between you and him was almost laughable, but Mingyu knew better than to voice this, as he valued his life. So instead he settled to watch Jeonghan skillfully sew the pearlescent buttons back on to your sweater. Â
Mingyu also knew better than to ask what happened in the first place. He knew that Jeonghan had his own way about things, and this was more than likely an apology of some kind. If Mingyu Kim was a far stupider man he would point out the fact that Jeonghan never denied that this was your sweater.   Â
You could hear the other members of the chess club before you even saw the door to the meeting room, there was an excited buzz spilling out into the hallway. As you closed in on the room you saw a paper hanging up on the closed door. Â
â1963 Collegiate Chess Championship: University of MichiganÂ
Yoon, Jeonghan
Xu, MinghaoÂ
Jeon, Wonwoo
Y/L/N, Y/F/N
Congratulations and good luck!â
Thatâs your name, youâre on the team. You thought Minghao was potentially exaggerating when he was predicting the team but he was right on the money. Something akin to anxiety bubbled in your stomach, what if you lose? What if you win?
Walking into the room Minghao smiled at you, Wonwoo gave you a thumbs up, and Jeonghan was simply staring at you He couldnât deny that he was scared of your placement on the team, when it came for the individual matches you potentially have him beat, he needed to play his best set of games in his career. Â
You took your usual seat at the table you share with Wonwoo and Minghao. Jeonghanâs eyes bored into your skull as you set up your board. Was Minghao right? Did he do all of this as a distraction? Were you really that big of a threat to him? You knew the answer, but that didnât stop the seeds of doubt from sewing in your mind.
âCongrats teammate!â You heard the smile in Wonwooâs voice before you saw it. Â
âCongratulations, Y/N.â Minghao smiled at you as he took his seat next to Wonwoo, âA force to be reckoned with, as always.â Â
âThank you both,â you smiled, âcongrats to you as well.â You stole a glance in Jeonghanâs direction, he was still staring. He was quick, he saw your eyes, and knowing he got what he wanted he slowly licked his lips and turned back to the board he was setting up with Mark. Â
Your blood boiled in your veins, Minghao had to have been right, heâs so cocky even with no wins against you under his belt. He must have been banking on you losing your composure, now and at the competition, so you determined right then that you would not allow it. You began to slam the white pawns into their places, earning you sideways glances from your tablemates. Â
Wonwoo pulled the black pieces out and tried to match your pace, knowing that your patience has run out, for Jeonghan Yoon related reasons heâs sure. The meeting is spent by you beating the boys in a variety of ways and shooting angry glances at the back of Jeonghanâs head. Jeonghan was stealing his own looks in your own direction under the guise of âkeeping an eye on the gamesâ. A few times he catches you looking at him, he attempts to soften your face to no avail.
After watching Wonwoo deliver a final checkmate to Minghao, you shot out of your seat and attempted to flee the room as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, Jeonghan had other plans. He caught your arm and pulled you to face him.
âCongratulations,â he said softly after he made sure everyone was out of the room. Â
âLikewise,â you bit, âis that all?â Jeonghan blinked at you, clearly confused. Â
âWhatâs wrong?â He asked earnestly, âArenât you excited?â You couldnât tell if he was truly confused or if he was acting again. Â
âI am,â you nodded, âwhat do you need? Or can I go home?â Â
âRight,â his lips pressed into a tight line, clearly no longer in the mood for whatever you decided you were mad about. He pulled his messenger bag to his front and pulled out a bunch of fabric. âI fixed this for you,â he held it out in front of him. You took it gingerly and unfolded it so you could look at what it actually was. The sweater he ruined a few weeks ago. A swooping feeling in your stomach took hold, something between tenderness and anger. You chose anger. Â
âOh so youâre stealing from me now?â You snapped. Â
âWhat?â He hissed, âI fixed it for you!â He pointed at the top two buttons he carefully sewed back on. He looked like a petulant child if you werenât seething you could laugh. Â
âYou still stole from me!âÂ
âY/N youâre missing the point on purpose!â He whined at you, âI wanted to fix my mistake!âÂ
âBy making another mistake.â You turned and walked out the door and all Jeonghan could do was stare after you. For once he was at a loss for words.       Â
Youâre in over your head, you have to be. You have never felt so unprepared for a set of matches in your life. The day was going to be full, only breaking for lunch and then your schedule thinning out God willing that you get to participate until the finals. Â
You smoothed your hands over the new outfit you scrounged up money to buy for the occassion. The blouse is pretty, but the main focus is the new trousers. You have never worn pants to a big event before, and youâre nervous for the reactions of the men downstairs. Determined to exude confidence even when you were scared out of your mind you took deep breaths and practiced looking tough in the mirror. You could not, however, forget how out of place you felt at this moment. Â
You check your watch and mutter a curse under your breath. Snatching your notebook off the hotel bed you tossed and turned in the entire night you bounded out the door. Once downstairs you snaked through throngs of people, picking up bits and pieces of conversations about chess strategy. Â
You spotted Wonwooâs head above various members of the crowd and made your way to him and where you assumed Minghao, Jeonghan, and your faculty advisor were as well. Your fingers wrapped around Minghaoâs arm and he turned to you quickly.Â
His eyes lit up seeing it was you, âY/N, hiâ he smiled down at you. Â
âHi Hao,â you wiggled through the last of the crowd and up next to him, âdid I miss anything?â you look around at the people, trying to spot Jeonghan.
âNo, weâre just waiting for table assignments,â he pointed toward the window, âheâs over there.â You followed his gesture and saw Jeonghan talking with the faculty advisor. He looked almost ethereal silhouetted against the window, cigarette delicately perched in between his fingers. You watched them talk for several minutes before you saw an official post a list on the wall opposite you. Jeonghan noticed as well, extinguished his cigarette, and excused himself to look at his table assignment. Â
The competitors funnelled into a line to check where they will be starting the day. You shuffled in behind Minghao, Jeonghan tucked in behind you. He was trying his best to ignore the new outfit and how good you happened to look in it as the line slowly moved. Minghao quickly found his name and moved out of the way for you to scan the document. You felt Jeonghan pressing against you slightly, clearly impatient and looking over your head. His hand hovered awkwardly over your hip, he ached to touch you even just casually. Â
Locating your name and your table you exited the line, leaving Jeonghanâs hand hanging in the air before he dropped it. He followed after you silently. Several other competitors were whispering about your outfit, he could hear them plainly even if you couldnât. Â
The thing about Jeonghan Yoon was that his reputation proceeded him. Every person in this building knew who he was and what he came here to do today. This type of reputation comes with a healthy respect and a bit of fear. So the dagger-like glances he shot these stupid men were not to be questioned. To their knowledge it was because you were his teammate, none of them were aware of the affection he held for you. Â
You broke away from your team in order to find the first table, your opponent already sitting on whiteâs side. Holding your hand out for him to shake you could tell he was cocky, he rose to take your hand. His handshake was firm, an obvious attempt to scare you. Only you werenât scared anymore, you felt like you were exactly where you were supposed to be. The environment was different but the game was the same, and you were one of the best. Â
The officials signaled for the beginning of the round and you watched as your opponent contemplated his first move. He selected a safe opener; for the first round and knowing nothing about your opponent this was a respectable choice. You tend to play it safe as well, opting for your classic attempt at a queenâs gambit. The match went uneventful for the first several moves, the only sound in the room was several timers clicking at different times. Some players were faster than others, and you were attempting to take your time and not get cocky. Â
The same could not be said about Jeonghan across the room. He was the epitome of confidence, as he has been every year since he won the first time. Freshly 19 and on top of the world. He always felt like the first win was some unbelievable stroke of luck and then he just continued to win. He realized quickly that he enjoyed winning, almost more than he liked playing the game itself. Maybe that makes him cocky, but he didnât care. He was making quick work of his first opponent, he was confident and playing defensively. He clicked his timer and watched the man on the other side of the table panic under his gaze.Â
Jeonghan watched as the man moved his rook across the board. He leaned forward, seeing now that the opponentâs king was unprotected. Jeonghan moved his knight. Â
âCheckmate.âÂ
Your timer clicked as you gently pressed the button. The man across from you looked perplexed as the board was dominated by your pieces. He figured that this would be an easy win for him, figuring that your university stacked the team so that Jeonghan would have an easier time winning. He was wrong, and everyone else in the room would soon find out if he didnât find a way to save his own ass and soon. He moved his bishop across to prevent you from queening your pawn on your next turn. His timer clicked. No matter, that bishop was the last piece protecting his king from your rook. Â
âCheckmate.âÂ
Your name was on everyoneâs lips as you moved to your next table. It was almost annoying, all you did was win one game against someone who needed a lot of practice in your opinion. They could start whispering when you were at least in the semifinals. If that first game was any indication on how the rest of the day would go it would be easy to get there. You knew Jeonghan was faring well, because once people were done talking about you they were talking about him. Â
You took your place on the white side of this board as you were at the table far before your next opponent. Jeonghan watched you from his side of the room, smiling to himself that you won your first match. He slipped a cigarette between his lips and brought his lighter to the end. He dragged on his cigarette as he watched his next opponent take his seat. Â
Jeonghan lost track of you at some point over the next several hours, as the matches became a bit more difficult he felt the need to focus. While he wanted more than anything to know how the rest of the team was faring, he had to win. This was his last chance, what no one knew was that he was declining the faculty advisorâs offer to continue his career after graduation. He was getting his degree for a reason, and for him the reason was to move on from this part of his life. So finishing with four consecutive collegiate championships under his belt would be great. Only problem here was, unfortunately, you. Â
You beat Minghao again right before lunch. Things were going incredibly well, much to your surprise. Minghao shook your hand, his smile almost cracking his face. The two of you walked toward the conference room where the complimentary lunch was set up. Jeonghan and Wonwoo were already seated at a table in the corner.Â
âThe sophomore from Clempsonâ Wonwoo mumbled as Minghao and yourself joined them at the table. Â
âWhat about him?â You asked as you reached for the water in the middle of the table. Â
âBeat me in round four,â Wonwoo sighed, pushing his food around his plate. Â
âOh so youâre both out?â You looked between Minghao and Wonwoo, âWhat about you?â You asked, turning to Jeonghan. Jeonghan shook his head,
âIâm still in,â he turned to Minghao then, âWho got you?â In response, Minghao smirked and pointed a finger at you. Jeonghanâs eyes followed in the direction he was pointing. He tried not to smile and pushed away from the table. You donât miss the roll of Minghaoâs eyes as he watches Jeonghan walk out of the conference room. Â
âIâve heard about you,â your first opponent after the lunch break spoke over confidently as he sat down across from you. âA girl at this competition is asinine.âÂ
âWell, I made it just as far as you so far,â you opened your notebook, âand I have heard nothing about you so might as well get this over with.â You brought your eyes up to his, refusing to back down. The man across from you scoffed at your bold reply. Â
âGod are all of you people from U of M like this?â He rolled his eyes, âA bitch and a bastard, you and Jeonghan.â You could punch him, him and his smug face. You bit your tongue to avoid getting yourself in trouble, if you didnât beat him, Jeonghan certainly would. Â
The match was quick, he was careless and sloppy, letting the delusion of confidence brought on by sexism carry him to a loss. You thrusted out your hand for him to shake. Â
âThanks for the practice,â you smiled, glancing down at your hand. He walked away without taking it. You let your hand drop to your side, trying and failing to hide the fact that you were upset by his words. Â
âThis is my next table,â you heard Jeonghanâs unusually timid voice at your side. Â
âOh,â you shuffled to the side, âIâm sorry.âÂ
âWhatâs wrong?â He blinked at you, âDid you lose?âÂ
âNo, obviously not,â you looked toward him. Â
âOkay,â he chuckled, âthen what happened?â
âHe called me a bitch, and you a bastard.â You mumbled. Â
âHe called you what?â Jeonghanâs eyes wildly searched the room.       Â
âA bitch, but he also called you a bastard.â You reminded him. Â
âYeah, yeah,â he gestured vaguely, âthatâs not the point.âÂ
âDrop it, no big deal, I knew this would happen,â you shook your head, âit always does.â With that, Jeonghan watched you walk toward another table. He sighed and sank down into the chair that you just vacated. Â
Jeonghan was distracted for the rest of his matches, did he make you feel that way? He was sure he did, that first meeting you attended. The difference was that he seemed to light a fire with his comment, whereas this asshole dampened your spirits. Jeonghan could rip his face off, your confidence was one of the best parts of you. Â
He sighed, moving his bishop across from his opponentâs king. Â
âCheck.âÂ
The man moved his king one space to the left. This allowed Jeonghan to move his rook to trap the king. Â
âCheckmate.â He muttered, raising from his seat, ignoring the other manâs outstretched hand. He misses being challenged, namely by you, but he wonât admit that to himself just yet. He wandered toward the front of the room, trying to waste time before his next table opened. He caught sight of your concentrated face. He leaned against the wall across from your table and watched the end of your match. Â
You won, of course you won. Â
âSo your semi finals match against Ms. Y/L/N will start in 20 minutes at the table towards the front.â An official interrupted his thoughts. Â
âWhat?â He tore his eyes away from you. âSemi finals is this round?âÂ
âYes, you and Ms. Y/L/N will begin in about 20 minutes,â he repeated gesturing to the table. Jeonghan didnât stick around to chat. Â
âY/N,â he snaked through people, âY/N!â He caught your arm, and placed his hands on your shoulders. He was smiling. Â
âJeonghan,â you nodded trying to ignore the feeling of electricity coursing through you. Â
âWeâre paired for the semi finalsâÂ
âI am aware,â you smirked. Your last match had given you the confidence to let your smug attitude reemerge. Â
âDove, please, nothing funny, just a straight up and down match,â he searched your eyes. Â
âOh, Jeonghan, this is too important.â
âThank you, I agree,â he exhaled. Â
âI need you to lose all on your own, not because I turn you onâÂ
You watched Jeonghan fiddle nervously with his fingers from across the table. He was trying, and failing, to keep cool. On the other hand, you kept eerily calm, you always prided yourself on your ability to seem unaffected by the situation at hand. The breakdown earlier was a mistake you made in front of Jeonghan, one you wouldnât be making again now. Â
Once you were given the go ahead you began your opener. Jeonghan felt his stomach drop watching your first several moves, you ditched the queenâs gambit, you werenât playing safe. He had no idea how to handle this. You watched his fingers falter just slightly, you knew he was freaking out. He might know your game well, but you knew him. He was absolutely out of his depth. Â
The two of you were well matched, eliminated participants gathered around your table. People who didnât know your name before today were watching in awe as you made moves that stunned even the man whoâs name was on everyoneâs lips before he even entered the building that morning. Â
He knew you could play circles around him, that wasnât the question anymore, he knew you were better than him. That fact made him furious, and he had to figure out a way to beat you, and quickly because you pressed the button on your timer after claiming his second rook. His fingers twitched and he resisted the urge to make an uncalculated move. He could get a check right now, but he knows itâs flimsy and you could get out of it easily. He settles for capturing your first bishop. You always liked to use your bishop.
You calculated possibilities in your head, and then you saw it. You dragged your queen to the center of the board, leaving Jeonghan no choice. Â
âCheckmate,â you whispered, you werenât sure if anyone but him heard you. The moment seemed to freeze, you didnât dare breathe, just in case Jeonghan shattered in front of you. After what felt like an eternity he dragged his eyes from the queen to your wild eyes.  Â
He rose to his feet and walked out of the room wordlessly. The crowd was silent as you watched him go. Jeonghan Yoon, the reigning champion, was just defeated by a freshman, on his own team. No one knew what to say. You didnât know what to say, in all honesty. You just sat there, watching the door, willing him to come back, but he never did. Â
Minghao broke through the crowd and grabbed your shoulders. Â
âYou did it,â he breathed, âCome on.â He pulled you out of your chair. He congratulated you profusely as he held your hand and dragged you back to your room upstairs. âRest, recuperate, finals begin in a few hours.â
âMake sure heâs okay, Hao,â was all you could muster before closing the door and flopping yourself onto the bed.  Â
âStop pacing, you're going to wear a rabbit trail into the floor,â Minghao muttered watching you continue your ruminations back and forth. Â
âWhat if I lose?âÂ
âThen you lose, that doesnât take away the fact that you made it this far, beating the reigning champion to do it.â He sighs. You nodded, still not sure if you were okay with coming this far and losing. Minghao watched your opponent approach finally and wrapped you into a hug, âGood luck,â he whispered into your hair before letting you go and taking his place in the crowd next to Wonwoo. Jeonghan was still strikingly missing.  Â
You shook your opponentâs hand and took your seat. The match started quickly, and rather unceremoniously. It almost put your nerves at ease that there was no fanfare, just a straight up and down game just as you had been playing all day. Â
The match quickly sucked you in, it was as if the rest of the room melted away. The man across from you was good, almost as good as Jeonghan. He was lucky that Jeonghan was paired with you in the semi finals, because you would have a different opponent right now if that werenât the case. However, this would end up working in your favor, youâve never lost to Jeonghan, so why would you lose to someone worse? Â
When you captured both of his knights he knew it was over, he didnât let it show, but he knew. He knew that you had dissected his game as you were playing him, which was the smartest strategy a player could use. If you were smart enough to watch, learn and adjust as you were playing, you knew exactly what you were doing. Â
He was almost honored when he heard you squeak,Â
âCheckmate.â He held out his hand and you took it. Â
âSee you next year, Y/Nâ he smiled. âDonât expect it to be an easy rematch.âÂ
âI would never assume anything would be easy,â you smiled back at him, âthanks for the game.â You turned back to the crowd for the first time since the match began. Immediately you zeroed in on someone that wasnât there when it started. He was smiling widely. The officials prevented you from leaving your table. They spoke to you but none of it registered with you, you couldnât take your eyes off of Jeonghan. Â
âSmile,â he mouthed to you. Camera flashes explained what he meant quickly, and you turned to smile at them while the officials were talking with reporters. Eventually, everything settled down and you were able to find Jeonghan leaning against a wall near the window. He once again had a cigarette lazily perched in his fingers. Â
âYou came,â you called to him as you approached. His eyes lit up as he saw you and he reached out to smush the cigarette in a nearby ashtray. Â
âOf course I did,â he wrapped his arms around you, âIâm sorry.âÂ
âWhat for?âÂ
âGirls not only can play chess, but they absolutely should, theyâre smarter than all of us anyway.â You couldnât help but laugh, the most freeing feeling after the insane day you had. Â
âFinally, you see it!âÂ
âOh shut up, we both know Iâm stupid,â you didnât even have time to agree before he was tilting your head up to give himself access to you. He pressed his lips to yours, a continuation of the apology, showing everyone in the room how proud he was of you and not caring at all who sees anymore. Â

Ngl I really enjoyed Viaâs arc in Sinsmas. She is just SO MUCH like her father that it both delights and hurts me lol.
Their relationship is an interesting take on struggling to try to break the cycle of abuse/neglect.
Stolas grew up with his father not even knowing his name or showing him a shred of affection. He was a means to an end, a tool. The only way heâs ever received any kind of acknowledgement from his father is by doing his duty. Mastering his powers, entering into an arranged marriage, and producing an heir.
You can just so clearly see how he is trying SO HARD to give Via a different life. He wants them to be a family. For her to never doubt her parents love her. To be the father he never had.
To the point he shoves his own wants and needs so far down that he is barely holding on.
Via going from accusing him of not loving her to realizing that he loves her so much that he forced himself to play the role of a good father and husband. To the point he destroyed himself for herâŠ
And that realization just devastates her.
Stolas getting involved with Blitz was the culmination of decades of forcing himself to be the person everyone else expected him to be. He feels he canât be loved, but he can be useful. And maybe if heâs useful enough, people will care about him.
The reason his connection with Blitz is so strong is because both of them feel that way. The difference is that Blitz was able to create his own found family (tho it took him ages to realize it lol) while Stolas has always been alone. Theyâre two sides of the same coin. And while Blitz has spent the past few years healing, Stolas has been descending further into darkness because he doesnât have that same support.
Via has absorbed so many of his insecurities. Especially the fear of not being loved or wanted despite Stolas trying SO HARD to be the perfect father to her. But heâs not. He can never be because he forgot the old adage of âput your oxygen mask on first before helping anyone else.â
I think that definitely can come across as him being neglectful of her. But to me it speaks to his desperation to be such a good father to her that he tries to hold himself to IMPOSSIBLE standards.
He doesnât fail Via because he doesnât care. He fails her because he keeps setting up these unrealistic expectations for their relationship. He massively overextends himself and puts his own wants and desires on the back burner so often that his life is imploding around him out of his control.
He doesnât miss the stars with her because he doesnât care. He misses them because heâs struggling to put his life back together after finally taking some initiative for himself. Heâs trying to deal with the fallout of wanting a divorce from Stella, but heâs waited so long and heâs so overwhelmed by it all that the date slips his mind. And the instant he realizes whatâs happened, he drops everything and goes looking for her.
Via keeps watching him make these promises he struggles with or fails to keep and doesnât realize until she finds all of the happy pills how much heâs overextended himself for her sake. And because sheâs her fatherâs daughter, she immediately thinks sheâs at fault. She thinks he would be happier if he hadnât forced himself to play house all these years for her sake.
Sheâs not wrong. If heâd separated from Stella years before, theyâd probably all be better off. But he didnât because of his sense of duty. Stolasâs problem is that he never advocates for himself until he reaches his literal breaking point. By then, the damage is more of a tsunami than a ripple because now his meticulously crafted house of cards is falling down around him faster than he can pick up the pieces.
Via is right that he would have been happier, but not for the reasons she thinks. He did it because he loved her, not out of obligation for her. And also because he is deeply broken and flawed.
Viaâs dealing with a lot of complicated emotions too. Her father was willing to sacrifice himself for his affair partner, which she initially believes means heâs picking Blitz over her. But really itâs just Stolas trying to save the only other person in his life who understands him and who maybe cares about him.
How could he live with himself if he let Blitz die?
And itâs not like Stolas has time to sit down and think of a rational plan. He rushes to the trial because Blitz is literally about to be decapitated. And then he saves him the only way he knows how. I think part of him was also convinced that, as much as he loves Via, she might actually be better off without him because he is a wreck. Heâs convinced heâs ruined his life and the lives of everyone around him.
I think this is why he doesnât fight Stella much for custody of Via. Not because he doesnât care, but because he genuinely thinks Stella is a more stable parent than he is and that Via will be better off with her as a result. The man also lacks a backbone too tho because his self worth is -9000.
But then Stolas doesnât get executed. And the consequences of his actions hit him like a ton of bricks once the adrenaline and panic wears off. He saved Blitz, but at what cost? And, based on his statement in Sinsmas, it sounds like he wouldâve done it all over again if given the chance. Because heâs the one who let Blitz use his grimoire even though he knew it was wrong. Because Blitz was in danger of dying because of him. And because he has a very strong sense of morality and justice too.
Dying in Blitzoâs place was a spur of the moment decision and once the dust cleared, Stolas realized how everything heâs tried to do to keep his shit together has fallen apart at the seams and now everyone knows it.
All Via can see when she looks at him now is that heâs hit rock bottom because of her. Again, not true. But Stolas has tried so hard to give her this idyllic family life, thinking that was the best thing he could do for her. Not realizing that she could see the cracks forming. She just didnât understand why there were cracks until now.
I donât think Via actually hates him. I think she hates herself. Convinced sheâs the reason heâs hit rock bottom. Why couldnât she see how much he was suffering? Why would he suffer so much for her? So sheâs taking herself out of the equation, just like he tried to with Blitz. If sheâs not in his life anymore, maybe heâll stop killing himself to try to make her happy. Maybe heâll stop being so miserable.
I think a big part of their arc together has been her going from thinking of Stolas as this perfect and larger than life figure to seeing him start to crumble and now getting a peek behind the curtain and realizing how much of that wasnât real. And it scares and upsets her that her dad isnât the perfect person heâs tried to be for her. Heâs broken and hurting and she doesnât know what to do to help because heâs spent her whole life focusing on her.
Not to say that heâs done that well. He genuinely hasnât. Heâs overcorrected so hard that heâs fucked her up in a completely different way because heâs overextended himself. He pushed himself until the illusion of a perfect happy family cracked along with him. Heâs also made it difficult for her to know how to help him because heâs sheltered her so much.
I think this sometimes makes Stolas come across as selfish. He seemingly âruinedâ his marriage and his relationship with his daughter for Blitz. But really it was just the pendulum swinging wildly in the opposite direction. He was so starved for happiness and connection that now heâs trying to live two separate lives and itâs just not possible and heâs falling apart even faster.
Stolas was so desperate for affection and to be of use that he lets Blitz have his grimoire, under the impression Blitz is attracted to him because Blitz literally tried to seduce him to get it. He also does all of the dirty talk because he thinks Blitz likes it.
I think he initially sets the terms for the grimoire usage because he thinks itâs a price Blitz is more than willing to pay because he showed up trying to seduce him. I think he l also just really wants an excuse to see/spend time with Blitz too. It doesnât even cross his mind that Blitz might want anything other than sex from him. Heâs once again playing a role based on what he thinks is expected of him.
Itâs not until Stolas discovers heâs starting to develop feelings for Blitz that he realizes their arrangement is wrong. And the moment he realizes it, he immediately tries to make amends. He hopes Blitz will admit he has feelings for him too, but is willing to step away if not. But he also cares about him so much, he makes sure to give him the Asmodean Crystal so he can freely make the choice.
Meanwhile he has no idea Blitz will just view this as another person trying to abandon him or look down on him. Because Blitz struggles with self worth too and believes the only way people will care about him is if he can be useful. Blitz has a deep seated fear of abandonment while Stolas fears no one could ever love him just for himself. He offers Blitz the crystal to let him know his feelings are genuine and to gauge Blitzâs too.
All of this is to say that I think Via and Stolas will reconcile, hopefully sooner rather than later. I think Via needs some time to process who her father actually is vs who she thought he was. And both of them need to be able to forgive themselves/grant themselves some grace so they can finally meet each other in the middle like Stolas has finally managed with Blitz. Stolas needs to accept Via is grown up now and he canât shield her from the negatives of the world forever. Meanwhile Via needs to understand everything doesnât have to be so black and white.

*runs to refill tea (and rum)* I'm back, baby! đ
(Also, before I come across as some drunk, I'd like to clarify I haven't had a drop of alcohol before pregnancy, so Christmas 2022, whoa... đđđ)
Clearly having a blast and couldn't imagine a better Christmas than reading one of your amazing stories, friend â€ïž
Russell happened to spot the cozy little scene from the doorway. He couldnât help staring, and trying not to frown. When Colter caught sight of his brother loitering (and that look on his face), Colter tried to hide most of his smile.
Loved that little moment of jealousy there. How do you like tasting your own medicine, Russ? đ
I absolutely loved their pizza and movie date at home. And they already shared so much with each other đ„č The fact he felt secure enough to open up to her after this short amount of time says a lot, considering Dory hasn't even told her the story yet. I love them đđ€
She did offer, he thought, remembering what youâd said at the hospital. And yet, he hesitated.
Honestly, in this day and age, it's always best to wait for renewed consent (even though I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have minded in the least lol). Loved that he recognized that and hesitated!
You watched him go when he headed across the hall back to Charlieâs room. You sighed and beat your hand against your own forehead in frustration. What the hell am I doing?
Poor girl đđ The morning after is always a tad awkward â especially if everything is still in the balance of will they/won't they and nothing *sexual* has happened yet đ
âWell hey there, cowboy,â you said, adopting a more sensuous tone. âI had a feeling youâd be packing. Whatâs that, a .45, or a 38 Special?â Russellâs eyes blinked wide. Then he erupted with deep laughter that made his shoulders shake. Aside from throwing a punch, your brother mustâve taught you something about guns too. âWell thank you, kindly,â Russell said, putting on a bit of a southern drawl, just to tease you. âBut youâre about to find out, naughty girl.â
Absolutely adored this exchange! â€ïž
Oooof, and that smut may have been my undoing for tonight! Holy hell!!! đźâđšđ„đ¶ïž
âYou know, drug dealers aside, Laramie isnât such a bad place to live,â you pointed out. âWeâve got a movie theater, a couple good outlet malls, a new Tex-Mex restaurant that just opened down the street. Iâm gonna have to find a new bar though.â
Again, she's so cute đđ€
I do hope they work something out. I don't think Russell would've necessarily taken the "big" step, knowing her feelings on this, if he hadn't planned to try and make it work somehow â€ïž
Heâd found where he wanted to be.
Perfect ending, friend đ„čđ (You know I love a bit of drama and angst in an ending lol)
I loved this series so goddamn much! It fit so well with every character and gave so much that the show didn't (like that awesome family reunion of the three Shaws). Can't wait to get into the one-shots over the holidays đ
Again, the merriest of Christmases to you and your family, Alex! Thank you for always being a wonderful friend đ€đ
Every Second Counts - Part 5
Pairing: Russell Shaw x F. Reader
Summary: One date with your best friendâs brother leaves you wanting more, even though his questionable job and vagabond lifestyle make you want to guard your heart. When your brother falls into trouble, however, Russell is the one you trust to help you find him.Â
AN: I thought about breaking up this chapter into two parts, but for some reason it didnât feel right. I hope you enjoy the finale! I think this is the moment weâve all been waiting forâŠ
Word Count: 7K
Tags/Warnings: 18+ only! Fluff, angst and hurt/comfort, â90s movie reference, mutual pining and tension, and a strong dose of smut.

Part 5: âDamn Worth Itâ
You borrowed Russellâs cell to call Dory from the hospital. You let her know that Charlie was stable and resting, and that Russell was bringing you home.
You shouldâve known that when you two got there, you wouldnât have the kind of privacy you craved. Colter and Dory were waiting in his car, parked in your driveway. They met you in front of your house, where Dory pulled you into a big, swaying hug. She cried, you cried, and her brothers hung back to watch the warm scene.
Dory pulled back to get a better look at you. She hesitated to touch the bandage above your brow.
âGod. Are you okay?â she asked.
âYeah, IâmâŠIâm fine,â you sniffed, wiping at your face. âCome on, letâs go inside.â
Dory actually had your keys. After she handed them to you, you took in a steadying breath, and you unlocked your front door without incident this time. You invited everyone in.
Even though you told her not to, Dory began straightening up a bit for you. She had Russell take out the trash while she washed the dishes.
Meanwhile, you pulled Colter aside in the living room. You led him to sit with you on the couch.
âCan I at least give you $1,000?â you asked. It was all you had left in your savings, but the man had literally saved your brother's life, and yours as well. âI know itâs not much, compared to what your jobs usually get youââ
âPlease,â Colter said. He touched your arm. âDonât worry about it. Iâm just glad you and Charlie are safe.â
You teared up all over again, but you gave him a smile and held his hand with both of yours.
âThank you,â you said.
Russell happened to spot the cozy little scene from the doorway. He couldnât help staring, and trying not to frown.
When Colter caught sight of his brother loitering (and that look on his face), Colter tried to hide most of his smile. He let go of your hand, patted your shoulder and stood. You followed him to the kitchen, where he went to check on Dory. Russell filtered in behind you both.
âHey, wanna grab some lunch?â Colter asked his sister.
She gave him a raised brow. âWow, my brother actually wants to hang out with me instead of rushing off to the next job?â
He gave her an amused look. âIâve got some time.â
Dory was happy to hear that, but her expression dimmed when she turned to you.
âWould you want to go? Or do you need to rest?â she asked.
âOh, I need to get cleaned up, and then sleep for about ten years,â you said. âBut you go, D. Have fun.â
She frowned. âI donât want to leave you here by yourself.â
âWell, she wonât be,â Russell chimed in. âIâm gonna hang out here for a bit, clean up and take little power nap myself.â
At that, Dory slowly smiled, both amused and suspicious. Her gaze slid back to you.
âAre you sure?â she asked. You read the double meaning laced in her tone.
âYeah, definitely,â you said with a smile, and the beginnings of a warm blush. âYou guys go ahead.â
There was a knowing gleam to her own smile, but Dory shrugged and gave you one last hug. She and Colter said their goodbyes to their older brother before they headed out. It left you alone in the house with Russell for the first time since this all began.
âUm, you can use the guest bathroom if you want to shower,â you told him. âTowels are under the sink, and feel free to borrow any of Charlieâs clothes if you need.â
âItâs okay, Iâve got a bag in the car with some stuff,â Russell said, tossing a thumb over his shoulder. âI take one wherever I go.â
âSmart,â you nodded. âVery prepared.â
A strange silence stretched between you two, until you couldnât take it anymore.
âIâm justâŠgonna go clean up,â you said. âWe can order some food after?â
âYeah, sounds good,â he said. He was amused as he watched you scurry off, after giving him another smile over your shoulder.
Though heâd be lying if he said he didnât feel a small trill of nerves himself. It brought him a little bounce in his step as he headed out to his car to grab his stuff.
By the time you were done showering and drying your hair, Russell had ordered a pizza (and a side of fries). You padded out into the living room in an old college shirt and pajama shorts. He tried not to linger his gaze on your smooth, bare legs.Â
âSorry, forgot to ask if youâd want something else to eat,â he said.Â
âPizza is perfect,â you said. At this point, after almost a full day without food, youâd eat sliced bread out of the bag. You gave him a teasing look. âIâd ask you if you wanted a beer, but Iâm afraid itâs not up to your standard.â
âWell, thatâs okay. I happen to have brought a sample for you, just like I promised,â he said, with that grin of his youâd come to expect.
He retrieved a case of homebrew from his car, but you had to add some ice cubes into a tall glass before you joined him back on the couch. You poured the contents of a bottle into the glass.
âSorry, I know this is sacrilege, but I canât drink warm beer,â you said.
âI canât fault you, though I didnât really peg you for a pizza and beer kind of girl,â he said. He tipped a swig of beer into his mouth, right from a lukewarm bottle. He was a purist.
You quirked a brow at him and took another bite of your pizza slice.Â
âWhy not?â you asked, after swallowing a mouthful of pepperoni and mushroom.
Russell shrugged. âNever mind. Forget I said anything.â
âNo, no. I want to hear this,â you said. âWhat, because I teach college students?â
Russell looked over at you and leaned on his elbow, resting above his knee.Â
âYouâre a college professor with a handful of degrees,â he said. âIâve got a GED and a give âem hell outlook on life.â
You shook your head at that.Â
âWeâre different. Thatâs not a bad thing,â you said. âAnd like my brother, youâve fought for this country. Youâve saved lives, including mine. Iâd say thatâs pretty damn special.â
His head tilted at that. He didnât want to remind you that, just like you saw today, heâd taken lives too. Perhaps just as many as heâd saved. You could debate the quality of those lives, but in the grand scheme of things, he knew what he was. A trained killer.
He rolled his shoulders, feeling a familiar weight.
You didnât like the pensive look on his face, so you aimed to distract him.
âWant to watch a movie?â you suggested.
Russell inclined his head. âSure. What you got?â
That was how the two of you ended up finishing the box of pizza and a case of beer while laughing at Tommy Boy, of all thingsâone of the best '90s buddy road trip comedies of all time. Apparently Russell had never seen it before, but you enjoyed watching him experience it for the first time. He had a deep, infectious laugh that made you laugh just by proximity.Â
Later in the movie, the reluctant, unlikely duo of Tommy and Richard hit a deer, and tried to transport it in the car. Russell both laughed and cringed when the animal woke up and thoroughly wrecked the car from the inside. You noticed his reaction and nudged him in the arm.Â
Russell held in a grunt of pain when you unintentionally hit his injured shoulder, bandaged underneath his gray henley.Â
âWhat if that was the Chevelle,â you teased.Â
He cast you a playfully chiding look. âWoman, donât even joke.â
You laughed and squeezed his forearm in a friendly gesture. But he thought there was more than just friendliness when you shot him that little smile. He decided to take a chance.Â
âCome âere,â he said. He slid a hand around your waist and guided you closer until you came to lay against his side. You allowed yourself to rest against him, splaying your hand flat against the firm wall of his chest. Your heart tripped up faster, but you also relaxed more fully for the first time since you got home. You let out a long breath, and you used the remote to lower the volume on the movie a little.
âDo you think Charlie will be able to get past this?â you asked quietly. âThink heâll be okay?â
Russell hummed as he thought back to his conversation with your brother in the hospital. Charlie was still young, but he seemed to realize what heâd done, and what he needed to change. He wouldnât have volunteered himself for rehab if he hadnât.
Russell brushed your arm with his thumb. âWell, I think he knows what he needs to do. If heâs anything like you, then heâll be all right.â
Your mouth tugged upward, though you considered his words with a sigh.
âHe hasnât had it easy,â you said. âHe was barely eighteen when our parents died. Suddenly he had to be an adult. In fact, he almost didnât finish high school. Had to take care of the funeral, had to get a job, had to take care of meâŠand I didnât always make it easy on him.â
Russellâs lips curved in light of your faint smile. Then, your expression dimmed.
âHe pulled me out of the car,â you admitted. Russell looked down at you.
âYou all were there?â he asked.Â
âMy dad was driving. Weâd just gone out to dinner as a family,â you said.
You hesitated as the scenes once again filtered through your mind. Some things were hazy. Others, you could see with perfect clarity. You remembered how your parents argued about the best way to get home while the pouring rain beat down overhead, half-drowning out their voices.
You remembered what the flash of a red stoplight looked like through the car window, with streams of water coming down, and a dead leaf stuck to the glass.
You remembered the sound of horns blaring in your ears, the crunch of metal on metal. Your motherâs scream. The feeling of being suspended, and then ricocheted painfully through time and space.
Then the smell of exhaust, and the metallic tang of blood.
âWe were heading through a terrible storm,â you said, after letting out a long breath through your nose. âBy the end of the night, it was just me and Charlie in the hospital.â
Heâd broken his arm, but thanks to him, the only thing you really walked away with were a few cuts and bruises, and the memories of that day. They were like old scars, painful and tender at the touch.
Russell shook his head, his brows knitting together. âIâm sorry.â
âYeah,â you breathed. âAnd Iâm sorry too. I know you understand what itâs like to lose a parent.â
The movie played on as that new weight settled between you. Russell fell into his own thoughts as he continued to rub your arm in comfort. His own past wasnât like yours, but he did understand some of your pain.
âHow much did Dory tell you about how we grew up?â he asked.
You shifted a bit, so you could see his face too.
âI know your dad took you all to a cabin in some sort of compound in the woods, when you all were still pretty young.â
âHe taught us to live off the land. Drilled us, really,â Russell explained, noting your raised brows. âYeah, he wasâŠwell, a paranoid bastard, to be frank. We still donât know all of why, and what drove him to move us out there.â
âDory said he wasâŠeccentric,â you said. Russell snorted.
âHe was a piece of fucking work,â he said. âHalf the time I hated him, if Iâm honest.â
That part was hard to admit, even if it was true. Your hand soothed across his chest, more comforting as you listened. Russellâs lips quirked. He liked that about you, that you were willing to listen without judging him, or his family. Maybe that was another reason Dory seemed to love you so much.
âBut one night, it was like he snapped,â he said.
For a moment, he was lost in the memory. His fatherâs anger, and the damn crazy look in his eyes.Â
âWhat happened?â you asked quietly.
Russell glanced at you again. âI donât think you wanna hear this right now.â
You shook your head. âNo, I do.â
He hesitated, but that earnest look in your eyes got him. Still, he surprised himself when he actually told you. He explained it the best he could, the way he saw it in his mindâs eye.
Their mom had been missing, hadnât come home yet. Then his dad had torn around the house like a man possessed, until he told them it was time to leave for their own safety. Dory had been scared, especially when he grabbed her, yelled at her.
That was the one thing Russell couldnât tolerate. So he snapped, yanking the older man back and shoving him away. It was one of the first times Russell had ever defied his father.
Ashton Shaw left them then, heading out into the night and the rain. Maybe heâd realized what he was doing to his own kids, his own family.
Colter wanted to follow after him, but Russell stopped him. Being the eldest, he took on the responsibility, even if heâd been reluctant. Weâre better off without himâŠ
He was barely sixteen at the time, but Russell knew heâd seen his father arguing with someoneâa man heâd seen before, talking with his mother. And thenâŠ
âI watched him die that night,â Russell said.
Your hand clenched in his shirt, reminding him that you were still in his arms, still listening. He remembered that scene, looking over the cliff to find his fatherâs broken body down below.Â
âHe fell, and I couldnât stop it,â he said. âAnd to this day, I still donât know what all that was about.â
Heâd been reluctant to tell even Colter that it still haunted him sometimes; that night, and the not knowing.
You pulled yourself up further so you could meet Russellâs gaze.
âIâm so sorry,â you said.
The movie had long faded into the background, but at least it gave some white noise for the next heavy beat that passed between you two. His eyes eventually fell away from yours.
âItâs old history,â Russell said at last.
âItâs not just history,â you denied softly. âItâs your life.â
He didnât know what to say to that, so he just hummed in agreement. He encouraged you to relax against him again, with a warm hand on your back. You settled and released another contented sigh. Even though Russellâs story weighed on your heart, you did feel closer to him. It made you feel like you understood Dory better too, and even Colter.
Russell rubbed your arm. âYou doinâ okay? Youâve had a long day.â
âDay and night,â you agreed. Your eyes closed against your will. âBut, yeahâŠI think Iâm okay now.â
At that, he smiled. He laid a kiss on your forehead.
âGood,â he said.
A few minutes later, Russell heard your soft, deeper breaths in sleep. He chanced grabbing a throw blanket laid over the back of the couch. He managed to toss it over your body, but he made sure it covered you. You shifted in your sleep and curled up more comfortably against him.Â
Russell smiled down on you fondly. Heâd learned a hell of a lot more about you in just the past couple of days, but ever since he met you, heâd been picking up on the important things. The things that made you the woman you were.
And he wanted more, he realized. He wanted more time with you.
That turned out to be the last real thought he had before his eyes closed on him too.Â
Russell didnât wake again until the credits on the movie were rolling near the end. You were still knocked out. So he carried you, blanket and all, over to your bedroom.
He smelled the remnants of your floral shampoo and body wash in the air, likely coming from the bathroom. It was an intoxicating mix, one that had infiltrated his nose ever since you came out of the shower today.Â
It was only 6:00 p.m., but it might as well have been midnight. He laid you down toward the middle of the bed. There was still space on the other side. Very tempting.
She did offer, he thought, remembering what youâd said at the hospital. And yet, he hesitated.
Before he could make a decision, you made it for him. Your hand reached out to hook in his shirt.Â
Russell looked down at your sleepy smile.Â
âGet over here,â you said, tugging him downward. He chuckled and wrapped his hand around yours. He allowed you to guide him over, and he somehow managed to roll onto the other side of the bed without crushing you.Â
âReflexes like a cat, I tell ya,â he quipped.
You giggled softly. He took off his first layer of defense (his pants), leaving him in his henley and boxer briefs. He settled into bed behind you and slipped an arm around your waist. He fit in snug against your back.
âMmm,â he sighed. His lips pressed behind your ear, smiling there. âFeels nice.âÂ
âMhmm,â you agreed.
He couldnât see your smile, but you held his arm in place. For the first time in a while, you werenât alone.
In the early morning, you woke up to warmth and closeness. The man in your bed snored lightly, mouth parted in sleep while he faced you. You smiled.
How could a man who felt dangerous, in more ways than one, also make you feel safe? It was a wonder. Though when an idea hit you, you carefully slid out of bed.
Russell eventually roused in his own time. He blinked awake, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. He stretched out his limbs in your very comfortable bed. This sure beat rusty motel springs.
He realized that he was alone in the room, but he heard you puttering around the house. He allowed himself to doze some more.
A few minutes later, you returned to greet him with a couple of mugs, drawing him back into the waking world with the rich smell of coffee.
âAww yeah, thatâs the stuff,â he said. He groaned as he slowly sat up.
You laughed and sat beside him on the edge of the bed. âGood morning.â
âMorning,â he said. His voice was deeper and rougher with sleep, washing down your spine pleasantly.
He accepted the mug you offered him. He took a sip and hummed in pleasure at its bold flavor. It wasnât as sweet as he usually liked it, but it was exactly what he needed right now.
âI just did a little sugar and creamer. That okay?â you asked.Â
âItâs good,â he nodded. And you looked good, he noticed, with your bed-tousled hair and an open robe over your tank top and little shorts. Â
âDo you want to meet Dory and Colter for breakfast?â you asked. âDory texted me this morning.â
Russellâs brows shot up.Â
âColt stuck around?â he asked.
âYeah, Dory asked him to stay at her place last night,â you said. Russell hummed in response.Â
A bit of an awkward lull fell between you. Youâd felt bolder yesterday in the hospital, but now, you werenât entirely sure what you were doing with a man who just slept somewhat-but-not-altogether platonically in your bed.
âUm, Iâll justâŠget ready then,â you said, pointing to the bathroom. âYouâŠtake your time.â
He cleared his throat. âUh, yeah.â
He peeled back the covers and climbed out of your bed, away from the sheets that smelled like you.Â
You watched him go when he headed across the hall back to Charlieâs room. You sighed and beat your hand against your own forehead in frustration. What the hell am I doing?
Youâd literally invited him into your bed last night, but he hadnât done anything more than hold you while you slept. It was incredibly kind, and it said a lot about him, despite his rough-around-the-edges exterior. You were just a little disappointed that heâd been a perfect gentleman about it all.Â
You rolled your eyes at yourself. What did that say about you?
You shook your head and resolved to freshen up. There was still a cut that the ER nurse covered with a butterfly bandage above your brow. You cleaned it up and applied a new bandage. Then you put on some makeup to cover the ugly bruise on your cheek and the dark circles that lingered under your eyes.
God, look at me. You actually wouldnât blame Russell for not being into you enough to make a move.Â
A bit disheartened, you changed out of your pajamas to slip on a nice, but comfortable dress over your bra and underwear. Afterward, you paused to stare at yourself in the mirror for a moment. What exactly do you want here?
âHey, uhââ Russellâs voice startled you, making you flinch. Maybe you were still jumpy.
He raised an apologetic hand. âSorry. Just thought Iâd ask if you want some toast or something. I donât think my stomach can wait âtil we meet up with Dory.â
You smiled faintly. âSure, go ahead. Whateverâs there, youâre welcome to.â
Russell paused, tilting his head. There was something off with you. He saw it, and felt it.Â
âHey, you okay?â he asked.Â
âYeah,â you said, glancing away.Â
Russellâs spidey senses began to tingle. He approached you and laid a hand on the counter, inches from yours.Â
âYou sure?â he said. He took in your hesitant face, then the pretty dress you had on. The color matched your eyes. Soulful eyes.
He smiled when you let him see them again.
âCan you see the bruises? I think I covered them up well enough,â you said. You turned to look at yourself in the mirror again, touching your jaw carefully.Â
Russellâs hand raised to find your cheek, earning your attention with wider eyes. His thumb swept across your skin as you started to blush.
âYouâre beautiful,â he said with a smile. âDonât you worry about that.â
Your face warmed further, despite your smile.Â
âYeah, the makeup helps,â you quipped.Â
âI didnât say anything about makeup,â he replied. Though he grinned and made a show of looking closer at your face. âAlthough, have your lashes always been that damn long?â
You laughed, but he didnât let go of you. Instead, his hand drifted down to your neck, cradling your jaw. His thumb brushed over your lower lip this time, smudging your lipstick a little. Your eyes met his, but theyâd already lowered, to the path of his hand. You were tempted to nip at his thumb, or better yet, suck it into your mouth.
Perhaps he read the thought crossing your face. Because when those darkened eyes flicked up to yours, he finally bowed his head to kiss you.
You took in a deep breath, and you melted into his mouth with a moan of wanting. A craving from the depths of your heart, finally being fulfilled.
You didnât let yourself think anymore. You gripped the front of his shirt and pulled him closer. He cupped the back of your head, tangling his fingers into your hair as he deepened the kiss. His tongue invaded your mouth, and you let him in. You met his every kiss with the same fervor, claiming him right back, demanding just as much.
Your hands slid up his chest and helped him shrug off the green jacket first, then his shirt (Led Zeppelin this time). He hooked an arm around your waist and brought you flush against him, so he could turn you around and walk you back to the bed.Â
You clung to his bare shoulders and savored the feeling of his warm, calloused hands burning up your thighs and ass, bunching the skirt of your dress. You helped him get it over your head and toss it onto the floor along with his clothes.Â
As he held you by the waist, his gaze dipped for a moment to take you in, from bare thighs and hips and lacy panties, all the way up to your breasts cupped in your bra. Through panting breaths, you smiled and blushed at the heated depths of his green eyes. You felt like your heart was beating in and out of rhythm. Â
But you managed to get a hold of your nerves long enough to drag your hands down his chest, down to his belt. You unclipped it for him and took your time in sliding the entire belt out of its loops. Then you let the brown leather fall to the floor.Â
Russell raised a brow at you, smiling. Taking your challenge for what it was, he unbuttoned his jeans himself and aimed to step out of them, but he had some trouble when one of the pant legs got caught around his ankle and sock-covered foot.
âShit,â he muttered as he stumbled a little. âHold on.â
Unable to help a small giggle, you grabbed his left arm to help steady him. He hissed in pain, but he cleared his throat to cover it. You gasped as you realized what youâd done. You noticed then that he had a bandage tightly wrapped above his elbow, right below one of his tattoos.
âWhatâs this?â you asked in concern. You held his arm with both hands. âDid you get shot? Did you get this looked at when we were at the hospital?â
Russell staved off your questions with a gentle hand on your shoulder.
âItâs okay. This is old, just still healing up,â he said.Â
You frowned up at him. âYou got stabbed, shot, what? When did this happen? I thought you worked in private security.â
âA couple months ago. I got, uh, grazed. Donât worry about it,â he said. âSometimes the job gets a bit dicey.â
He could tell though, that you werenât going to let it go easily.Â
âLet me see,â you said, trying to peek under the bandage. Russell laughed and gathered you into his arms to stop your attempts. Your concern warmed him, but it wasnât necessary.Â
âIâm fine, sweetheart. I promise. Can we focus on the fun part, here?â he said.
Your brows furrowed. You opened your mouth to reply, but Russell saw the testiness in your eyes. He dipped down to kiss you, swallowing whatever snippy remark you were about to make.
You werenât the only one giving into a craving here. Russellâs was bone-deep, molten in his blood, and getting to see you, to feel your soft body under his hands was already so much better than heâd imagined. His hold tightened on your waist, his fingers pressing into your skin.
A shudder ran up your spine at his touch. You circled your arms around his neck and let him continue ravishing you, then laying you down onto the bed.Â
While you were careful about avoiding the bandage, your hand did drift down his arm, and further still, to palm at the straining bulge pressing against you. And Jesus Christ, did it feel generous. He grunted at your touch and paused with his lips against your jaw.Â
âWell hey there, cowboy,â you said, adopting a more sensuous tone. âI had a feeling youâd be packing. Whatâs that, a .45, or a 38 Special?â
Russellâs eyes blinked wide. Then he erupted with deep laughter that made his shoulders shake. Aside from throwing a punch, your brother mustâve taught you something about guns too.Â
âWell thank you, kindly,â Russell said, putting on a bit of a southern drawl, just to tease you. âBut youâre about to find out, naughty girl.â
You giggled as he began to kiss your neck, languid and sloppy. He blazed a wet trail down the column of your throat and between your breasts. His beard rasping against your skin made you shudder a little, but it wasnât unpleasant. In fact, you quite liked that a lot.
He slipped a hand underneath you to unclip the black lace. You arched into him so he had easier access.Â
He slid the bra from your body and tossed it somewhere behind him. Just as heâd imagined, you had beautiful tits. His lips explored each of them in turn, squeezing supple flesh and rolling your sensitive, hardened nipples with his tongue and fingers.Â
It was a prequel, you thought, for what talents that mouth might have further down. You had to moan just at the idea, your fingers clenching in his hair, but also at the sensations he was drawing from your body wherever he touched. The man clearly knew what he was doing.
He traveled lower still and laid slow, occasionally nipping kisses across your stomach, hips and thighs. His fingers hooked around your panties and lowered them down your legs. You felt his warm breath panting against your thigh. You glanced down at him and tensed in anticipation.Â
âStill good?â he checked, squeezing your hip. You smiled and reached for his hand. Russell gave it to you, brushing his thumb over the back of your hand in affection.Â
âI think Iâm about to be,â you said cheekily.
He smirked. His other hand smoothed up the inside of your thigh and slipped past your folds, finding wetness that already coated his digits.
âGoddamn. Youâre soaked,â he said, just a hint teasing. âBet if I put my mouth on you, youâd fuckinâ drown me.â
Again, he stopped whatever smart quip you were about to levy at him next when his fingers found your clit. You let out a gasping moan instead.
He decided that he already loved that sound. He endeavored to pull it from you, again and again when he began working you open with his fingers and pumping them inside you. He enjoyed seeing you writhe and arch against his hand. Your hands squeezed his arms, his shoulders, trying to anchor yourself. Â
His thumb circled and strummed your clit in a rhythm only he could hear in his head, until you couldnât help biting your nails into his shoulders when you came. You shuddered your release as your core throbbed with warmth and slick around his fingers.Â
âFuck, thatâs my girl,â he said. His voice rasped deep with arousal. âWouldnât even mind if you did drown me.âÂ
You huffed in response, unable to form speech just now.
Next time, Russell thought. He slipped his fingers out of you and licked them clean, making your eyes widen. He smirked and stroked your thigh as you came down, a shuddering mess.
After taking a second to regain your breath, you pulled him down for a kiss, both grateful and fueled by a passion you couldnât put into words. What you felt for this man was instinctual, from the moment you saw him. And yet, it was also so much more. It was raw, and real, and maybe even beautiful.
The thought spurred you on as your hands moved with purpose down his body. Your nails caught at the waistband of his boxer briefs as you tried to roll them down. You got it halfway down his thighs, enough to let his hardened length spring free. You bit your lip at the mere sight of him. Goddamn.
Your hand slid around his cock, near its weeping head. You used the beads of wetness there to work your way smoothly down to its base. Russellâs body tensed above you, just before he groaned low in pleasure.  Â
You pushed at his chest to have him let you up.Â
âYour turn, baby,â you said. It would be one hell of a challenge to get your mouth down that beautiful 44 Magnum, but you were more than willing to try.
To your surprise, Russell shook his head and guided you back down.
âLetâs pin that one for next time too. Wanna be inside you already,â he said.
You blinked, but then you nodded in breathless agreement. He kissed you deeply, devouring you with his teeth grazing your bottom lip. His tongue soon slipped out to soothe it.  Â
âCondom?â he panted, between kisses.Â
âOh, yeah. UmâŠbathroom, bottom drawer,â you whispered, though you werenât sure why you were whispering.Â
âOkay, two seconds,â he said.
He left you in the bed, quite literally hot and bothered, and very naked. You crossed your arms over your breasts on reflex while you tried to recover. Your core was still tingling, and your heart was beating fast, though you couldnât stamp out the smile forming on your face.Â
You heard the sound of foil unwrapping and clothed rustling. When he came back to the bedroom, you finally got a full picture of what you were in for. You unconsciously licked your lips as your gaze dipped down his body, and the indeed impressive package at full mast, and full display.Â
A grin curved his lips when he caught you staring. He climbed back onto the bed with just a bit of struggle with all the blankets coiled about. He pushed a heavy blanket out of his way, accidentally shoving it to the floor.
âBack to business,â he said.
âOh, yeah,â you agreed, and you welcomed him back, sliding your hands up his arms and shoulders. You hooked your thigh around his hip as he found his way back between your legs. Holding his bearded face in your hands, you pulled him in for another kiss that reignited you both.Â
He sunk his hand into your hair and treated you to another slow, deep kiss. Until your thigh tightening around his hip urged him to satisfy what you both had been wanting and waiting for.
He grabbed your thighs and angled you higher. Then he lined himself up at your entrance. Looking into your eyes, your breaths mingling together, he sheathed himself a little at a time. A keening moan fell from your lips.
He started with shallow thrusts, giving you time to adjust. But that in itself was a torturous tease. It made the coil in your lower belly start to tighten again. Pleasure began to thrum inside you, ever slowly. Your head tipped back into the pillows with a gasp. Â
âGod, Russell, please,â you uttered. You squeezed his arms on reflex, your heels digging into his ass.Â
âI know, baby. Gonna fucking wreck you, I promise,â he said with a grin.Â
You huffed in amusement. That was a hefty promise.
Though a moan tore from your throat when he finally bottomed out, stretching your inner walls. He groaned along with you. His lips fastened to your neck as he gave you deeper thrusts.
âYou feel so good,â you said raggedly in his ear, raking your fingers through his hair. You felt every damn inch of him.
âYou too, baby. So damn good,â he gritted out. âTell me what you want.â
He raised your thigh a bit higher, his fingers pressing into flesh.
âUgh, fuck,â you gasped, as he hit a particularly delicious angle. âWhatever you want to give me.â
âYou sure about that?â Russell asked, panting against your neck. Your nails dragged down his back between the muscles in his shoulders, hard enough to earn a halting groan from him.
You nodded emphatically. âYes!â
His lips hinted at a smile. âOkay, hold on."
Before you could even respond, he pulled out of you all the way, just so he could guide you over onto your stomach. He pulled you up onto your hands and knees. As he ran a hand down the gentle slope of your back and around the curve of your ass, you breathed harder in anticipation.
âSo damn beautiful,â he muttered.
You glanced at him over your shoulder. You unconsciously bit your lip as your heart couldnât help but swell at his words. Russell met you with a look that betrayed his desire, making your lower belly tremble as well.
He parted your cheeks and slotted himself between your thighs from behind. You once again felt the head of his cock nudging at your entrance, and then pushing back in with one deep plunge. Both of you let out moans of relief at the feeling. Â
Pretty soon, he was pounding into you deeper and faster than before. Oh, fuck yesâŠ
You clawed at the headboard, trying to find something to keep you stable. Russellâs arm slid around you for a solid support. You held onto him right back with one hand while he continued to drive into you, earning each and every sound coming out of your mouth. Heâd finally angled you just right, so he could hit that special spot inside you with every thrust. Your pussy clenched on him in response, making him grunt in pleasure.Â
âFuck, youâre close. I can fuckinâ feel it,â he said, panting. He laid a biting kiss where your neck met your shoulder. You cried out in both pain and pleasure, your inner walls once again squeezing on him.Â
âYeah,â you nodded, breathless. âThis time, youâre gonna come with me.â
You reached back and tangled your fingers into his hair. He held you to his chest and squeezed your breast a bit roughly. You uttered a wanton sound. You dragged his hand down your body to part your folds. You used his fingers to press against your clit.Â
He picked up your hint, and then took control, massaging you with his fingers. There you began to tremble from the inside out. Warmth emanated from your core and spread outward, down to your toes as you came even harder on his cock.Â
Russell wasnât far behind. His voice joined yours as his body locked up, and he spilled hot into the condom. You almost wished heâd come freely inside you, so you could really feel him. Regardless, your body was boneless when he lowered you down onto the bed afterward.
âHoly shit,â you breathed.
He chuckled and kissed your shoulder, before he fully pulled out. Panting for breath though you both were, you managed to twist onto your side and reach a hand for his cheek. Your fingers slipped higher from there, cupping the back of his neck. Your thumb swept tenderly across his cheek, and you guided him down for a proper kiss.
Russell obliged you, his lips meeting yours plush and wet. He brushed strands of your sweaty hair away from your forehead with affection.
Somehow, that last kiss was softer than all the rest.
One thing was for sure though. There was no way you two were making it to breakfast.Â
âI kind of feel bad now,â you later confessed.Â
You and Russell were taking a few minutes just to recover under the messy sheets. He held you while sitting up against your headboard. He almost craved a smoke. Youâd given him a damn workout.Â
He smirked at the thought. Admittedly, his mind was more on focused on the scenes replaying in his head than on what you were saying.Â
âDory doesnât get to see you guys that often,â you continued, âand who knows how long Colter will seriously wait for us to get out of bed.â
Russellâs attention drifted back to you at that.
âCome on, itâs not like they know why weâre running late,â he said. You gave him a knowing look.Â
âAre you kidding? They were already suspicious when you brought me home yesterday,â you replied with a laugh.Â
Russell grinned and rubbed your arm. He knew you were probably right, but he couldnât bring himself to care.Â
âYeah, well. That was damn worth it,â he said.
You smiled. You rolled your head over on his shoulder, so you could see his face, but you became contemplative as uncertainty crept in. You let in a breath to gather your courage, and you decided to take a chance.Â
âYou know, drug dealers aside, Laramie isnât such a bad place to live,â you pointed out. âWeâve got a movie theater, a couple good outlet malls, a new Tex-Mex restaurant that just opened down the street. Iâm gonna have to find a new bar though.â
Russell smiled at you. He knew what you were suggesting.
He sighed as his amusement faded.Â
âLook, even if I stayâŠâ he hesitated.
He looked into your eyes and saw the vulnerability there. You were being honest with him, putting your heart into his hands. The least he could do was be honest. He covered your hand where it rested on his chest.
âIf Iâm on a job, I could be gone weeks at a time. I wonât be able to tell you where I am or what Iâm doing. Thatâs gonna be hard on you,â he said.Â
He knew his friend Doug made it work with his wife, but their relationship wasnât without friction because of the job he and Russell shared.
âI can handle it,â you said firmly.Â
âYou just had a little freak out over a scratch earlier,â Russell pointed out, with a gesturing hand at his bandaged arm.Â
âOkay, thatâs different,â you said.
You wouldnât say it now, but there were things that still concerned you about his job. You had a strong feeling that "private security" wasnât all it entailed. However, after what heâd done for you, after what heâd done for Charlie, you knew that Russell Shaw was a good man.
There was something good here, and you didnât want to lose it this time. You shifted in his arms, so you could face him.
âLook, we can sit down and figure all that out,â you said. âBut do you want to at least try? OrâŠam I reading this wrong?â
Russell stared back at you ruefully. He raised a hand to touch your cheek, grazing your soft skin with his fingers.Â
âNo, youâre not,â he said.Â
In fact, what he felt already ran deeper with you than heâd like to admit. He let out a long breath through his nose.Â
âOkay,â he said at last. âIf weâre gonna do this, letâs do it right, I guess. Iâll book a motel here in town for now. If things go well, I canâŠI donât know, find an apartment.â
Your answering smile broke him down further, even as it warmed him inside. You turned over to circle your arms around his neck, and as an added bonus, pressing your bare breasts against his chest. You kissed his cheek with a happy hum. He laughed at your enthusiasm. He also accepted your sweet path of kisses that led to his lips.Â
He groaned when it became not so sweet, with your tongue slipping hotly against his. His hold on your hips tightened.
âUh oh. Baby, we canât do this now,â he chuckled, even though your hand was already wandering down his body and under the sheets. You both were supposed to be getting ready to meet his brother and sister for lunch.Â
âFive minutes,â you said against his lips. All the while, you were pushing him back onto the bed. You began to kiss down his chest, and lower still.  Â
Russell snorted. Right.Â
But he wasnât about to argue with you. He had a gut feelingâŠone that made him almost certain.
Heâd found where he wanted to be.Â

âš chapter 28 omg MERRY CHRISTMASSSS BABIESS and happy holidays to those who donât celebrate christmas đ hope you guys like this chapter LOL.. 2114 words isnât that crazy

the uber ride to sunghoonâs party was filled with light chatter (aka gaon yelling and disrupting the poor driver), but your mind was a million miles away. despite being with your friends, you couldnât stop thinking about jisung. it had only been a few days since you spoke, but those days had made you spiral into a storm of overthinking. had you gone too far asking him to hangout at your apartment? its not like it was a date, especially after he invited mark along. maybe he sensed your intentions and invited mark to let you know he didnât see you that way. the thought makes your stomach twist, but you try to shake it off as the party approaches.
âare you excited?â liz asks, pulling you away from your thoughts.
âyeah, i thinkâ you reply, trying to sound enthusiastic, but thereâs a slight hesitation in your voice. the idea of talking to jisung again had you on edge.
gaonâs beside you, clearly distracted by his own thoughts. you knew heâd been waiting for an excuse to see sunghoon, and this would be the perfect chance to do so. you smile at him, trying to distract yourself from your own anxiety.
âare you planning on talking to sunghoon tonightâ you ask, raising an eyebrow.
he blushes a little, glancing out the window shyly like he wasnât just talking about making out with him 10 minutes ago. âmaybe. hes been kinda busy so i havenât been able to see him recently. but who knows?â
you giggle, nudging him gently with your elbow, âgood luck.â
meanwhile, ningning was busy with her phone, the bright light of the screen lighting up her entire face as she smiles. âi still canât believe chenle asked me to goâ
âyou guys have been talking for weeks, iâm surprised it took him this long to make a move. i shouldâve done it before himâŠâ liz replies, eyeing ningning up and down. you raise your eyebrow at her, holding back laughter to keep the moment going.
âright..â she replies with, looking at liz with an unreadable expression. you giggle and shake your head, looking out the window at the passing christmas lights. its silly, really. youâve never stayed on campus for christmas before, you always wanted to be with your family and do all the cheesy holiday traditions like usual, but not this year. something about it keeps you here.
as the car pulls up to the house, you notice the sound of music growing louder. the party is in full swing already, and a wave of excitement and dread wash over you at the same time.
âweâre here!â gaon exclaims, practically jumping out of the car.
ningning grabs her bag, throwing you a quick glance. âyou okay? you seem kind of distracted.â
you give her a small smile, nodding, âim fine. just.. thinking.â
âabout jisung?â gaon teases, catching on instantly, but you quickly shake your head, trying to dismiss it.
âno no, just.. you know, the party. a lot of people are here.â
he raises an eyebrow, patting you on the shoulder. âwell iâm sure youâll be fine. just try to relax and have fun, okay?â
you nod and shoot him a small smile, though it doesnât feel as easy as it seems.
as soon as you head inside, you scan the area for any sign on jisung. you donât see him immediately, but you canât help like youâre waiting for something. as you make your way further into the apartment, you spot chenle and ningning already talking by the dinner table. heâs smiling at her in a way that makes your stomach do a weird flip, but you look away before they notice you staring.
âlets grab drinks firstâ liz suggests, grabbing your arm and heading towards the counter.
you enter the kitchen, making your way around all of the people standing in the way. gaon follows behind you, admiring the counters covered in various bottles, cans, and half empty solo cups. its noisy, people chatting and laughing around you, but it feels kind of nice. liz immediately grabs a can of soda and hands it to you.
âyouâre overthinking againâ she teases, nudging your shoulder. âseriously, stop worrying. heâll either be here or he wont. either way weâll have fun!â
you glance at her, grateful for her blunt but comforting words. âim trying, its just.. you know, everything is weird right now.â
she shrugs, popping the tab on her drink. âif heâs acting like that, thatâs his problem, just have fun, and who knows, maybe youâll find his replacementâ he jokes, smirking at you.
you roll your eyes, a smile escaping your lips despite trying to hide it. âmaybe i willâ you say, trying to sound confident.
âexactly!â she laughs. âcome on, lets go find gaon.â
youâre eventually dragged into a corner of the living room next to the christmas tree, a small break from the chaos of the party. you stand next to gaon, looking somewhat relaxed, heâs a lot quieter than usual. but thatâs not surprising since sunghoon is here, and even though this is his party, you havenât seen him yet.
you let your gaze wander around the room as your sip your drink, trying to let yourself calm down from the anxiety that had been building up for a while. just as you start to settle, something makes you pause.
jisung.
heâs standing near the punch table with mark and leehan, laughing about something. his hair is a little messier than usual, and heâs wearing a sparkly grey sweater, much different than what he usually wears. your heart skips a beat as you watch him. heâs standing there, looking so effortlessly attractive, and you find yourself staring for way too long. you quickly look away, feeling the heat creep up your neck as you avoid eye contact with your friends.
âi.. need some fresh air.â you announce, walking away before anybody could reply. you find yourself walking towards the balcony, and silently thank god that nobody is on there.
jisung watches as you exit the living room, closing the sliding door behind you. leehan follows his gaze and smirks to himself before speaking. âyou gonna talk to her?â he asks, his voice low but teasing.
âhuh?â he asks, tearing his eyes away from you. his heart speeds up and itâs clear through the tremble in his voice that heâs on the verge of panicking.
mark raises an eyebrow, his tone still teasing, âyouâve been watching her for like 5 minutes straight dude. sheâs going outside.. seems like the perfect opportunity.â
his throat feels dry, and his thoughts start to race. he wasnât exactly planning on talking to you tonight, but he canât keep pretending like you donât exist anymore.
âiâuh, noâ jisung mutters, his fingers running through his hair showing how stressed he is, âi donât know, i donât even know what to say.â
leehan grins, clearly amused by the way jisung is borderline freaking out, âjust say youâre afraid to talk to her.â
âiâm not afraid,â jisung responds quickly and sternly, though the slight edge of uncertainty in his voice betrays him. the weight of his words settle over him, and his instincts are telling him to go chase after you and just say something, anything. but he stays still in his place, still letting his thoughts consume him.
âwhatever man, just donât blame us when someone else talks to her.â mark shakes his head, clearly unconvinced by jisungâs words.
he swallows hard at the idea, a pit forming in his stomach at the thought of somebody showing interest in you. he hasnât even come to terms with his feelings for you yet, so why does this bother him so much? itâs all too confusing for him and all he wants to do is hide in a hole and disappear forever. but he canât. because he cares about you too much.
he knows youâre not gonna wait around forever for him to accept his feelings, you deserve better than that. but he canât let anybody else do it before he can.
after a boost of confidence, his feet move before his mind can catch up, and before he even realizes it, heâs walking towards the balcony. each step feels heavier than the last, his palms starting to sweat as he approaches the door.
youâre standing against the railing, the cool december air hitting your face as you admire the christmas lights that are across campus. the way you stand, so quiet and alone, makes all the confidence jisung built up almost completely disappear. you looked so pretty, the lights shining against your face lit up all your features he liked so much, it almost made him forget how to speak.
âheyâ he speaks up, his voice thick with uncertainty.
you turn around, immediately recognizing his voice behind you. your eyes widen when you see him, you never thought heâd be the first to reach out after so long. you stand and stare at him for a bit too long before replying. âhi..â
you raise an eyebrow in confusion, and he finally finds his words. âi just wanted to talk to you. to apologize, i should say. iâve been kind of avoiding you, and i didnât mean to make things weird.â
a small pause, and your gaze softens. âits okay, jisung. i didnât really know what was going on either.â
he feels a small pang of guilt when he realizes the weight of his actions. he left you completely in the dark, and he canât imagine the way you had been feeling the past few days. if he had been all over the place, he had no idea what it couldâve been like for you.
you meet his eyes, and for a second, neither of you say anything. thereâs a strange tension in the air, like an invisible force pulling you two closer, but neither of you act on it, youâre just standing in front of each other awkwardly.
âyeah,â he murmurs, his voice quieter now. âi didnât mean to ignore you. i guess iâve been overthinking it.â
you smile at him softly, though itâs a little unsure, like youâre trying to figure it out together. âleehan says we have that in common.â
the comment catches him off guard, and for a moment, he just stares at you before letting out a small laugh. it felt awkward at first, but when you laugh too, the pressure subsides.
his eyes flicker away from you, looking upwards when he notices it. a small piece of mistletoe conveniently hung above you two. he freezes for a second, his breath catching in his throat.
you notice his pause and follow his gaze, looking up at whatever caught his attention âwhat is it?â
he hesitates, his lips twitching likes heâs fighting a smile. â..thereâs mistletoe.â he says, pointing upwards with his finger.
you glance up, spotting the small plant above you two. your cheeks warm despite the chill, and when your eyes meet his again, thereâs a flicker of something unspoken between you two.
he scratches the back of his neck, his confidence wavering for a moment. he takes a breath and steps closer to you. âmaybe..â his voice lowers, quieter now, âmaybe this will prove it.â
your breath hitches as his hand comes up to your shoulder, his warm hands sending sparks through your body.
âi-â you start to say something, but the words get caught in your throat when he leans in.
the kiss is slow at first, his lips were soft and tentative, like he was trying to figure you out. its awkward, you shift slightly, making your noses bump, but when you pull back in a nervous giggle, he doesnât seem bothered.
âsorry..â he mumbles, his face flushed. âthat wasnât..â
you shake your head quickly, a smile breaking through your nerves. âits okay, it wasnât badâ
he tilts his head, his hands cupping your flushed cheeks. he softly rubs the skin under this thumb, smiling at you before speaking. âcan i try that again?â
you nod and he leans in again with more confidence this time. the kiss is deeper, and more certain than the last. he knew you wanted, needed this as much as he did, and this was the only way to show it. his hands stay cradling your face, your hands wrapping around his torso gently and gripping the material of his sweater as a way of grounding yourself.
jisungâs thoughts are a blur, and yours are no better. but one thing is: neither of you want this moment to end. the way you respond to his kiss, leaning in like you trust him completely. the way he gently holds your face, like if he holds on any tighter youâll break. everything about it feels right.
when he finally pulls back, his forehead rests against yours, and he closes his eye for a moment. âthat was..â he trails off, letting out a breathless laugh. âbetter?â
you nod, your voice barely a whisper, âbetter.â
for a moment, you two stay there, admiring each otherâs faces like youâre the only two people in the world. inside, the party continues like before, but youâre way too occupied to care about that right now.

Do you have any thoughts on the idea of enablers? I'm struggling to find anything online analyzing the idea, rather than just chastising people for like, giving an alcoholic loved one money.
i do! i wrote a course paper about it once lol. gonna bullet point my thoughts for ease
first of all, i want to both point out that the concepts of enabling/codependency are deeply shitty + originate from toxic, abstinence-only spaces-- that being said, there is absolutely a painful dynamic that can crop up in relationships with ppl who are chaotically using which sometimes takes the form of: giving more than you can/want to give without receiving anything in return, burning yourself out trying to 'save' someone, breaking your own boundaries for another person, doing whatever another person asks without question even when doing that thing makes you feel bad, + more
personally i believe that codependency + by extension, "enabling", has caught on due to the total lack of infrastructure or public resources for ppl in chaotic use, alongside prohibition which tells us that all 'illicit' drug use is inherently bad. obsession with individual responsibility ensures that we treat ppl in chaotic use as irresponsible (but perhaps Sick, Helpless) ppl who need to Choose to Get Better (which will happen if they Hit Rock Bottom). except rock bottom doesn't usually produce healing + with today's toxic drug supply, they're liable to fucking die on the way down.
as someone who has loved + does love many ppl who use drugs to various degrees of danger + someone who absolutely fit(s) the definition of a "codependent" or "enabler" in many ways (sometimes proudly, sometimes in ways i want to change): what matters is, are you breaking your own boundaries for this person? are you giving them things then resenting them when they don't receive them in the way you expected (e.g paying for rehab, then they leave)? are you refusing to hold them accountable for mistreating you bcuz they 'can't help it' or 'that's not them; it's the drugs'? are you expending massive amounts of resources you don't have on someone who doesn't want those resources? are you acquiescing to every request for resources, even when those requests are clearly shortsighted or unfair? do you have a vision of how your loved one Should live + are you harming yourself trying to actualize it?
some examples of boundaries i have which help with this, some of which might be considered enabling lol: i won't give money if i expect it back; if i give you money, i've already accepted i may never see it again. i won't use a substance with someone if they have a recent history of using it chaotically. i won't offer a substance to someone much younger than me if i know that it isn't already part of their regular substance patterns. i probably won't offer a substance with high dependency potential to someone if i know that it isn't already part of their regular substance patterns. i will make requests for my loved ones to be a certain level of sober at certain key moments (e.g driving me somewhere, an event, to be emotionally present with me).
there are a lot more + i have a lot more to say abt this + have been considering writing an essay abt this actually but i hope this helps!

Since it's once again the 24th, here comes the annual reminder from me that Kingdom Come AKA the so called BBC MERLIN'S Canonical Season 6 is actually anything but canon and was made by fans.
BBC Merlin doesn't have a Season 6
And every year people tell me "I don't think that anyone actually believes that Kingdom Come is canon" and every year I cry because no, no a lot of people do. Maybe not on Tumblr but everywhere else you always see comment threads that go a little something like this:
"omg the ending was so sad why did the writers do that?đđ"
"don't worry! The writers actually wrote the script for Season 6 that later got cancelled, but it's online you can read it!!"
"I DIDN'T KNOW THAT THANK YOU SO MUCH"
Ahhhhhhhh
And I also make these posts for all the new, wonderful fans that don't know the whole story, who may stumble upon the Kingdom Come blog and read "the canonical ending of the show" or whatever lie the people who made it wrote and believe it to be the case. Because why wouldn't you? It's says it is! BUT IT ISN'T!!
Why am I so pressed about it?
I mean I ain't going to lie the main reason is because I don't like it and think it is a great example of character assassination and disregard of what the original show wanted to share with the finale.
But I mean there are many fanfics (and kingdom come IS a fanfic) that I think are just as bad if not worse. Why don't I also complain about them? Because it isn't my place! I can criticise some tropes but you'll never see me directly attacking a specific fic by name! It's a story someone made for free just because they like writing.
But since these creators clearly believe that their work is somehow superior and has more value than other fics, I will treat it as such! And if you wanted it to be canon so bad I will criticise it like I do with the actual show. And trust me, as much as I adore BBC Merlin I am not blind to its flaws, and I am very critical about them on here.
So yeah. I think it sucks that a lot of fans believe that's the actual ending! Even if you liked it (and so didn't think that the show ended horribly with all its morals squashed) I don't think it's right that you fell for a lie. I had conversations with people who loved it and think of it as their personal season 6 while knowing it isn't canon. And that's wonderful! But you should know the truth.
So let me repeat this one last time
BBC Merlin has no canonical season 6
I feel like I was a lot harsher and aggressive this time around. I think it's because I lost a close family member just this month, and with Christmas so close my nerves are frayed.
But my goal is to make so many of these posts that when you look Kingdom Come up you find them before the actual blog lol. So anyone reading will know not to trust what the blog says.
And to make it clear. Hidden in their posts they do say it is fanmade. But you have to look for it, and if you just want to read you won't see it.
Plus the way they make it sound, the script they sent to BBC (btw... DON'T SEND YOUR FICS TO WRITERS FFS) was actually accepted lmao. And the only issue was the actors didn't want to come back.
Sure babe, sure. That's how shows work.
Damn I'm so salty today.
Again I wouldn't talk about other fics this way, I swear.
Now go read And like the cycle of the year we begin again. Or the Change Trilogy. Both very different, but very long and amazing possible Season 6s

*walks on in tiredly, waves, leaves a basket of baked goodies, refuses to elaborate as i promptly leave to pass out for sixteen hours* Well hello there, itâs been a while since I left an ask, lifeâs gotten busy lol.
Anyway! Once again thank you for all of your work in the fandom and for writing so much for the boys, itâs always a delight to curl up after a hard day with a warm drink and just read everything, it never fails to put a smile on my face and make my day a little brighter, so once again, thank you ^^.
(Also I know this is properly incredibly late but happy anniversary to the blog! I havenât been able to sit down and just write much of anything for a while else Iâd have probably said this sooner, sorry about that.)
Also, uh, beware a long ask ahead? This idea has been consuming me alongside Assassin Reader with Warriors and Lustrous Reader and itâs kind of been intruding in the space the fairy tale au should be at while Iâm writing it + Linktober, hope you donât mind me just sharing it here so it hopefully leaves my system lol.
So I donât really expect many people in the LU fandom to know about Mili (who is a japanese indie band, really good songs), but Iâve been listening to Summoning 101 and then suddenly blacked out and woke up with the idea of Twilight with an au with Summoner Reader (or any of the boys really, I feel like it would work well for any of them, but especially so for Twi, Time and First).
-So the gist of it would be that Summoner Reader is probably from a world where both magic and modern technology exist (albeit with some challenges and friction between magic users and scientists), probably a little more advanced than Wildâs world. And that they themselves had a Link and a Zelda, a Link on his own journey and a Zelda who was incapacitated but probably trying to get back to them, Summoner Reader gets roped into the adventure because they were close to Link and was really knowledgeable of magic, making several attempts to mix it with science which got them mostly ostricized from society, and they know a lot of Hyruleâs history so he asked for their help in locating Zelda, Summoner Reader agreeing because it would allow them to keep an eye on Link and also gather ingredients to hopefully make a breakthrough that would guarantee many of Hyruleâs older enemies like say, Ganon or Vaati or the like would stay permanently down, even if it means shunting them off somewhere else before they could be sealed to try and break the cycle of reincarnation (I mean if the enemy canât be killed but can be sealed, then surely thereâs some way of sending them back to the netherworld where they came from and make sure they stayed there). Surely nothing could possibly go wrong in the middle of this adventure-
-So.Â
Things go wrong in the middle of the adventure.
Link dies sort of things go wrong.Â
(Either in battle trying to protect Summoner Reader or trying to get Zelda back, or because at some point Summoner Reader overextended themselves healing him and he was just like, âYeah no Iâm not dragging them down with me after this one, I can accept the cost of my wellbeing to save my homeland, I do not accept Summonerâs life being added to the cost.â And ended up going off on his own, Summoner Reader catching up and, despite their best efforts, being unable to heal him, to the amusement of a certain Darknut shaped shadow.)
So Summoner Reader very clearly panics because none of the stories says there canât be a hero, and there was no one who is capable enough to take up the mantle (I mean theyâre a magician and they know for a fact theyâre not hero material, and as far as they know there has only ever been one hero per generation/crisis, even if one crisis is mostly only put on hold until another one can come around and finish it), so they think and think and think, until finally they look at the Master Sword, dormant and silent in itâs scabbard that they had to pry off their Linkâs long stiff hands hands, and have an idea.
Itâs an insane, foolhardy, and incredibly selfish idea.Â
But it can work. It can finish what their Link started, it can save their Zelda.
(It can help ease some of the guilt they feel at failing them both.)
So, they get to work, get some decomposing Wolfos fangs, a lot more powdered moonlight than is probably advised, the Master Sword (it could find things once upon a time couldnât it? So what if it burns their hands, they will make this work, it will work with the last ingredient theyâll use, it will be worth it-), some of their own blood for the circle-
And half a Hylian.
Desperation drives one to do awful things. If they had enough time maybe they could perfect the spell, if they had enough time maybe Link would have still been there to talk them out of it, for finding a better way-
But their Link isnât there anymore, is he? And they never had enough time.
(All the stories say is that there has to be a hero, never which one.)
(Summoner Reader was trying to pull literally anyone over that fit the bill, but I like to think that they were specifically aiming for Fierce Deity while using the remaining power of the Master Sword and well, since heâs sealed in a mask it kind of just targeted the next closest thing heâs related to, maybe he felt a tug in the mask and kept Time up about it and the poor guy is just very over it lol)
-So now this can be pre-LU or during LU, but the gist of it, is that because Summoner Reader used decomposing Wolfos fangs, the one they end up pulling through the ritual is Twilight (who maybe was on a journey of his own looking for another way into the Twilight Realm like in the TP manga, maybe because Dusk cryptically informed him there were magical disturbances going on where the mirror once was during one of their weekly wine times or something and he immediately took up the quest).
Needless to say none of them trust one another and thereâs a lot of complicated feelings going on there (with Twilight still holding some hope that maybe it was the Twili and promptly being smacked over the head with a brick that it wasnât and Summoner Reader feeling bad they pulled him into all this and over the demise (hah) of their Link and promptly deciding theyâre going to A: Not get attached and B: Not let it happen again so help them goddesses).
The plan is that things will be solved and then theyâll go their separate ways, surely itâs simple enough of a goal to achieve.
Right?
-Things do not, in fact, go according to plan, and these two end up catching feelings along the journey, but end up not saying anything to each other because theyâre both terrified of trying to say anything and then immediately losing one another at the end of the journey. Except the choice ends up being robbed of them anyway because an enemy (Dark Link as a monster and already up to his shenanigans being the logical option, the funnier option {for me} being a version of Zant from Summoner Readerâs verse that Twi has already decided Itâs On Sight on Principle) catching onto the fact that Twilight should not be there and targeting Summoner Reader and, since they used themselves as a tether to bring and keep Twilight there, immediately ends up opening a road to send him back where he should be. Summoner Reader trying their darnest to pull him back and keep him there and Twilight trying to hold onto them-
But theyâre attacked a second time, it causes their hold to slip.
The last thing Twilight sees before he falls through is Summoner Reader crumble to the floor like a puppet with itâs strings cut, and next thing they both know-
Heâs gone.
(As you may guess, neither side takes this turn of events well.)
-So! If this is pre-LU, Twilight is eventually called by Dusk again and meets the Chain and, remembering what Summoner Reader did, basically went â... Mysteriously opening portals you say?â and doesnât ask further questions. If anyone notices heâs a little more aggressive to the Shadow than any of them, or that he always look a little disappointed after looking at the portals, well, they wonât ask the same way they donât ask about Wolfie. Everyone of them has their secrets theyâre not ready to share yet, it will come up in time when heâs ready.Â
-Meanwhile Summoner Reader, whoâs barely managed to escape alive, hastily gotten themselves healed, has way too much coffee and energy potions in their system and with zero sleep, just managed to break out Zelda on their own after a series of Shenanigans, hastily recreating the ritual on the ground while the Princess is trying her best to hold off Ganondorf on their own so they can finish it even as the Master Sword is quite literally trying to burn their hands off and sacrificing all of their years of research to make this work darn it: Surely it will work this time right? If it worked once then it can work again right? *trying to convince themselves and has been actively overextending themselves even more than they already are*
-Next thing they know the Chain is yanked through another portal, much more violently than the last few times, in the middle of a battle, is that Ganondorf?! Why is the Princess fighting alone? Wait why is Twilight rushing over to that fallen person- is that the Master Sword?!
After theyâre done with the urgent matters they are definitely cornering the Rancher for answers.
(For context, Summoner Reader didnât give up on trying to bring Twilight back, because again, they didnât finish their quest, and he didnât want to go, thatâs reason enough to bring him back. But due to the Chain being all in one place it was harder to find him among them, so they got⊠creative, and paid a more extreme price for it in spite of Zelda trying to dissuade them because they were sacrificing all they had. Itâs a grand olâ time.)
Huh, in hindsight this could also connect nicely to a Ga1ahad and Scientific Witchery au.Â
Anyway thatâs all Iâll elaborate on for now, because this is long enough as is and Iâm tired, sorry for the sudden writing dump lol.
In any case, thank you so much for all of your work in the fandom, remember to take care and thank you so much for inspiring me to write more! I hope youâre having a good day/afternoon/night.
-From A Very Tired WintertimeStoryteller đ.
This took a while to get to but woah it was worth the wait.
Frist of all. How dare you? DX
Why must you hurt my boy, Twilight, like this again???
Also, Reader is like.... totally dead. ^.^*
They were being held together with bubble gum, duck tape, and sheer power of will. That last summons would have been enough to put them in a coma. Summoning that many people while being that weak would have definitely caused some organs to shut down. If not just have them drop dead entirely.
I wanna see Twilight see their body, attempt to get to them only to be blocked, and then absolutely lose his mind.
Forget turning into Wolfie. Twilight goes straight feral. Full barbarian- "I would like to Rage," sort of thing.

Ragapom headcanons:
I agree 100% with Ragatha falls first Pomni falls harder
Zooble and Gangle are always giving each other looks about how gay but oblivious Raggy and Pomni are. Sometimes, it's the other way around, and Ragapom ships Abstragedy instead
Pomni's favorite thing about Raggy is her voice and Raggy's favorite thing about Pom is her eyes
Ragatha is very careful with the fact that Pomni doesn't like to be touched but to the point where Pomni would get like "ok you are my girlfriend you can touch me more, I'll tell you if it's too much"
Pomni's touch aversion also makes her prefer to be the one that initiates contact, Ragatha would sometimes hover her hand over her Pom's cheek or arm so she will lean into the touch if it's ok
I read somewhere that Pomni's favorite color is red, so I hc that at some point Raggy complains about her licorice hair but Pom compliments it saying it's her favorite color
Ragatha has a piano in her room but she's not the best at piano, Pomni turns out to be great at music, they spend a lot of time playing piano and singing in her room, it becomes Pomni's favorite thing in the circus. Jax, who's room is right next to, hates it
Both think they are the "reacher" or that they want the other more than the other wants them, or that the other could do better than them. Jax, not knowing this, once tried to make them argue about who the reacher and the settler was, but it became a fight of "I love YOU more" "No! I love YOU more" and he hates it
Kinger ships it enthusiastically, Gangle is happy for them and thinks they deserve each other, Zobble gets a little second hand embarrassment or gets sick of them sometimes but ships them too, Jax is a hater and a troll, Caine never notices it, and Bubble makes censored comment and jokes about it
Ragatha is a lesbian but she was deep in the closet before the circus cause she clearly represses her feelings. Pomni is demisexual and bi
Ragatha actually gets flustered easier than Pomni, lovestruck Pomni when it comes to Raggy instead goes quietly awestruck and give the most tender, calm and genuine of soft smiles and stares
If Ragatha is ever sad or upset at Pomni, the jester gets full crawling on the floor, open the door to find her kneeling with a bouquet of flowers, Gummigoo at spudsy's panic mode
Anyway, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk
I am so sorry to answer this a bit late but please know I am eating every single one of these headcanons up, you're cooking so good with these ;v;
I specifically want to talk for a second about each of them thinking they're the reacher with the other, that's super good...both of them privately worrying if they're too much or not enough for the other, if they're loved as much as they love back. I feel like both of them struggle with feelings of inadequacy and being "lesser" to a degree so it would make sense that they would have these fears regarding each other as well. Hopefully it's something that gets talked out early in their relationship so they don't have to worry about where they stand with the other. I really love the idea too that (most of) the rest of their friends in the circus support their relationship so much (also thank you for the Abstragedy crumbs here too).
(Also the idea of an apologetic Pomni crawling to Ragatha on all fours asking for forgiveness is so funny to me, I am sure Ragatha can't stay mad at her for long lol)
#ragapom#jesterdoll#buttonblossom#jester tea#ALSO YEAH i absolutely thought along the same lines when i found out pomni's favorite color was red#i feel like pomni would love ragatha's hair and think it's super pretty and love playing with it ;;;

oki i know we've all just chosen to accept that beatings are a part of demon mating culture and like, i dont think thats 100% wrong, but also thinking about linguang-jun's reaction to seeing shang qinghua beaten at the ascension incident, im kinda hesitant to fall into it 100%
oki my biggest defense for it being a demon-culture thing is that sha hualing didn't show any disagreement when mobei jun suggested "three beatings a day" in that particularly hilarious conversation, but that's honestly pretty thin. we know that she loves binghe and she never makes any attempt to fight him or to have him fight her. if anything, she strives to avoid it
there's also the possibility that the 'beating' that linguang-jun witnessed the conclusion of was a particularly unromantic one via demon standards. he saw shang qinghua and said "oh you were clearly displeased with him" so mayyybbee there's something to the pattern of bruises that speaks to intent but again, that's pretty thin
so might i suggest, from my humble little insane brain, that rather than beatings being a demon-culture thing, mobei jun is just fucking weird
oki bear with me oki but i rlly like this idea a lot LOL
im not even saying that mobei jun is a sadist (altho def not opposed to that), im saying that my socially awkward icy demon lord just straight up has no good concept of how to get the attention of his intended and this is sincerely his best effort. there's no research, no demon custom, no human custom, it's just mobei jun desperately screaming "look at meeeeeee pleaaassseeee" in his own extremely unique way that fucking no one understands
i would defend that this is likely due to his fucked up childhood and trust issues. like maybe linguang-jun isolated him to such an extent that mobei-jun winds up relatively divorced from his own culture for courting and doesnt even fucking know the first thing about it. maybe he has some twisted history of "look the only time i was shown affection was during martial training, which were basically beatings, so beatings = affection, yeah?" or maybe he's just so stupid and desperate that he has no fucking idea and no real plan, he's just trying to get shang qinghua's attention by any means necessary
i sort of like a mixture of all of the above. like linguang jun was the only person who showed him more typical signs of affection, and that was the prelude to betrayal. so mobei jun doesnt trust those types of affectionate gestures. but when he received martial training, either from his uncle or in one of the handful of times he'd seen his father, it was at least useful. like he can remember getting beaten and know there was an honesty to it. beating him made him stronger, being strong helped him to survive, it was the truest affection he's received in his life. and look, mobei jun hasn't exactly put all of that together all of that in as many words, but the effect is long lasting. and not all of shang qinghua's beatings were out of affection either. ultimately, there's this suspicious as fuck cultivator who's groveling at his feet and mobei-jun isnt exactly keen on humanity to begin with. and with shang qinghua prone to more typical shows of affection, the way his uncle was before the Betrayal? he's not going to be tricked again! he'll beat the human into submission to prove that he's strong and he's not a small defenseless child anymore who can be so ruthlessly abandoned! but then he really does start to develop feelings for shang qinghua and really does want his attention and qinghua simply wont look at him. sure, he'll throw out a million words of groveling and acting pathetic, but what does any of that even fucking mean?! does qinghua only see him as a king? does qinghua even see him as that or is he waiting for a chance to betray him? how can he get shang qinghua's attention? how can he keep him? and so he thinks about his only fond memories of 'affection' and starts the habit of beating qinghua lightly three times a day. it's gotta work. it totally has to work. it MUST be working, bc qinghua just told the demon emperor that acting pathetic is a way of showing affection!!! SO CLEARLY QINGHUA MUST LOOK AT HIM NOW RIGHT?!!? but their relationship just doesnt seem to be progressing and after the qinghua saves him from falling, mobei jun now has a brand new "height of being show affection" memory to cling to but its... very much the opposite of his memories of being beaten. and a whole lot better too. being caught by shang qinghua and protected in that way has his heart thudding every time he remembers it and suddenly beating qinghua has lost its appeal. how can he do something for qinghua that matches that feeling??? because now it feels poultry to offer qinghua mere beatings when those barely even seem enjoyable for qinghua anyway??? and he doesnt particularly enjoy qinghua acting pathetic for him either, even if he knows theres affection behind the gesture, and qinghua always acts extra pathetic during beatings so thats another reason to lay off. so mobei jun is in the middle of contemplating this shit and stops beating qinghua so much when suddenly its time for his ascension ceremony and he drags qinghua there with him and now qinghua is talking about leaving him and mobei jun's heart just about shatters. is it because he laid off on the beatings? is it because qinghua was always planning to betray him, the way he always feared? is it because mobei jun misread this whole thing? in front of his dead fathers door, a man who never gave much of a fuck about him, while anticipating the arrival of his horrible uncle, vulnerable and reminded of every reason he's never trusted traditional shows of intimacy and so he tells qinghua to fuck off, beats him without any affectionate intentions, and greets his uncle in heartbroken misery. but then qinghua COMES BACK WHEN HE NEEDS HIM and he apparently always hated the beatings which is a blow but also now QINGHUA IS LEAVING HIM AGAIN AND THIS IS HELL, MOBEI IS IN HELL RN.
and not to mention, he witnessed linguang-jun beating shang qinghua and suddenly, he doesnt even know why he ever thought beatings were all that affectionate either because this is horrible and he hates it and mobei jun is Not Equipped To Cope With Guilt, it's not something he's been trained in and he is not coping with ANY of this well tbh, not his uncle, not his heartbreak, and he just wants the familiarity of shang qinghua's normal pathetic behavior. something normal. something to ground him. but shang qinghua is not normal right now and he's still planning to LEAVE and mobei jun is all panic, no thoughts. and now shang qinghua is saying shit like "you only beat me cuz i was easy-going and weak" and ow? that hurts? and then shang qinghua is saying he was only ever indulging mobei jun and OW? THAT HURTS?! and mobei jun is prideful and in pain and upset so he's relying on familiar emotions. being angry. being prideful. being haughty. pretending he has any control over this situation. unsure how to act outside of their normal dynamic. unsure how to respond to this very different side of qinghua. but no matter what he says, qinghua is leaving. qinghua pinches his cheeks and insults him and calls him spoiled even when he's seen directly how his own uncle treats him and calls himself his father in front of the room where his father lies dead and yeah, it hurts when qinghua pinches his cheeks. not just the physical pain, but the knowledge that qinghua wants to hurt him. that hurts most of all and it's pathetic but mobei jun's head is swimming with the knowledge that maybe violence was never a good idea between them but what else can he do in this situation? he's completely out of his depth! so he threatens qinghua not to leave and he still LEAVES
so now he's trying to find qinghua and the entire time his mind is a complete mess of emotions because was he wrong all this time and qinghua cannot be gone, thats unacceptable, and what can he offer to make qinghua stay? how can he possibly not lose this person?? and the best he can think of is to let qinghua hurt him in return, let him get his licks in, and maybe that will help
but shang qinghua doesnt hit him when offered and qinghua seems a bit scared of him and for the first time ever that seems kinda fucking awful and mobei jun is out of his depth, but the warmth he feels when shang qinghua wont hit him is really... something. and maybe theres a lot more shows of affection he should be learning, like the feeling when someone could hit you but chooses not to. and look, he's starting from abysmal standards. and yeah, when shang qinghua suggests he cook for him that sounds weird and demeaning and mobei jun instinctively wants to turn it down
but when he thinks about how it might be a way to show affection that they both appreciate, he's really determined to see it through
anyway thats a verrrryyyyy long over-explanation as to why i dont think the beatings are demon culture, i think mobei jun is just a terminally awkward traumatized weirdo who doesnt know how to communicate

ok i got to the end (like 2-3 hours ago)! my initial impressions (lowkey highkey just a review at this point) are is that I liked it and Iâd definitely watch it again. I can definitely see potential for being a yearly hanukkah rewatch.
itâs not for the faint at heart by any stretch of the imagination (lots of sex, nudity, gore, and reprehensible people being reprehensible to each other); itâs still very clearly a send up to exploitation cinema, even if it is trying to be a little loftier with its themes. but if youâre a fan of schlocky, grimy, low-budget, indie splatter/grindhouse slashers, itâs definitely worth a watch.
it wears its 80s horror influences on its sleeve, and pays some pretty direct homage (most notably to my eye, to john carpenterâs halloween; thereâs one shot in particular that was so deliberately referential to Michael Myers stalking the streets of Haddonfield, I wouldnât be surprised if they shot it in the same location; thereâs also a rabbi who shows up in the last half of the film who plays a very Loomis-like role) almost to the point of pastiche. at the same time, it borrows widely enough & inserts enough of its own unique spin to avoid feeling at all derivative.
the plot & characters were fun, and made great use of the premise. some of the cinematography was actually impressive. the soundtrack couldâve used more klezmer-infused metal, but thatâs a stylistic preference lol.
a lot of the dialog, acting & delivery wasnât great, and there was sometimes just a little too much time to breathe between lines that made it feel a little stilted, especially in the first half. it starts way slower than it had to, but it does eventually find its rhythm.
nearly everyone in the movie (aside from a small handful of characters) is itâs always sunny in philadelphia levels of terrible, but further down the drama end of the spectrum than comedy. nevertheless, there are moments that are played for comedy.
one of the concerns i had going in was how it would handle its portrayal of jews & judaism, especially given how unkind to jews & jewish culture horror can be, and the fact that the writer is not himself jewish. it was something where I was prepared to just enjoy laughing about it anyways, with how inherently campy the concept of a âhanukillerâ is. but no it was actually pretty good. not perfect, but good.
thereâs a refreshing specificity to the characters I enjoyed. jews are allowed to be a world unto ourselves, and the fact that the movie revolves around such terrible people at no point feels like saying âjews are like xâ. judaism and the role of a rabbi are affirmed as loving & life-giving, and the hanukiller is fully framed as an exceptional extremist, not representative of any real form of judaism, & not just in a buffalo bill âoh btw heâs not actually transâ throwaway line way.
for every jewish symbol & ritual object that the hanukiller twists, the legitimate version is shown repeatedly in a peaceful, loving context. plenty of dreidels, kippahs, magen davids, and kosher menorahs to go around (out of dozens of menorahs, there is one electric temple menorah with the lights at three different heights in the shul, which is weird bc it looks like it was filmed in an actual synagogue & Iâm pretty sure thatâs not a kosher temple menorah). I totally understand if seeing stuff like a bone menorah (the true horror is the candles not being at their proper heights) or the star of david carved into peopleâs chests or scrawled in entrails at all is a ânopeâ, but it is explicitly framed as an extremely heretical perversion of judaism, and called out as suchââthis is not judaismââand the star of david is shown in proper contexts.
the film definitely could have shown at least one other jew in a shtreimel to keep from associating the hasidic style of dress with violence. i could easily see the juxtaposition of the visibly ultra-frum hanukillerâs violence against less/non observant jews in less/invisibly jewish dress sending the wrong message. however, the aforementioned loomis-like character does still dress in plain orthodox style & is presented as a foil to the killer, being from the same synagogue, and thereâs enough counterbalance to the potential âtradition = scary & violentâ takeaway elsewhere in the narrative that it feels like the script is still pushing back against that conclusion.
perhaps surprising for the inherent irreverence of making a jewish slasher revolving around a jewish holy day at all, thereâs a clear love & respect for jews & jewish culture here. though not himself jewish, the writerâs familiarity & adjacency shines through & manages to dodge flattening Jews down to either antisemitic or philosemitic caricature.
all-in-all, itâs a good bit of the âol ultraviolence: hanukkah edition. if youâre just looking for schlocky, gory fun for hanukkah, itâs the kind of movie that you can just turn your brain off and enjoy that way. but the themes are there and deep enough to still have something interesting to say. there need to be more of both jewish horror AND hanukkah movies, and this is not a bad entry to add to either of those lists.
watching Hanukkah (2019)âthe Hanukkah horror/slasher movieâhere we go lol
#there is also a scene where the hanukiller & a lapsed rabbinic student are going back listing mitzvah by number that seemed odd#I know itâs tradition that there are 613 of them & a few rabbis have tried to list them all out#but Iâve never seen anyone cite mitzvahs as like âmitzvah 47â âmitvah 136â etc#idk if thatâs my ignorance or theirs lol#hanukkah 2019#horror#2010s horror#jumblr#jewish horror#hanukkah

slay the princess pristine cut spoilers etc
i was brainstorming with buddies on discord and started thinking about damsel ch3 having the blade with her, already pointed at her heart, then just started thinking about the blade as a tool.
i think about the blade so much. a cold reminder of your mission in this world, something so tiny that represents a huge wall between you, your ability to be willing to understand others, to understand yourself.
if you bring it with you you've chosen to take a defensive stance against something and someone you don't understand, but it's so comforting, it gives you options, it gives you control over any situation given you don't underestimate the person standing in front of you. even when you don't want it, when you think you don't need it, it will come back to you. a nagging feeling. you're given the option to be distrustful even when you don't literally have it in you, it's what you've been taught is safety, it hangs over your head and dangles above your heart at all times.
and in damsel ch3 it goes from a tool given weight by the role you're supposed to play, to the same thing but looming over her this time. the expectations of what you're supposed to want and what's best for the people around you and what keeps you grounded, the narrator sang the same tune before, and he hurt her and he hurt you. he hurt himself and his humanity in the process. and now he's taken the backseat and is forced to see how messed up that is by having the smitten be the one pulling the strings of the construct, someone with a perspective so different, but one that ends up hurting everyone all the same, even if he doesn't intend it to do so.
everyone is forced to look at themselves in the mirror.
carrying that blade is suffocating for anyone.
and now im thinking about mr. "let's throw it out the window" contrarian, the only voice you can bring to her heart along with the hero, someone that refused to engage with the narrative and someone that is well aware that his perspective is annoying and unneeded for its purposes.
and then he meets the whole of her, and she tells him about how his courage is beautiful. he's the part of the long quiet that knowingly or not, is more willing to throw aside any kind of logic in order to understand a situation in a way the rest don't want to, and he's *now* realizing that his existence is an important aspect to have.
#this is mostly copy pasted from my conversation with some new additions after having coffee and brainstorming some more lol#this isn't the only time the game has portrayed the blade as a sign of trust of course#thorn is all about that#but i wanted to talk about how this perspective hurts literally everyone in happily ever after#i could say a lot more about this but i think i got the point across!#one issue i had with HEA that was brought into my attention is the surprising lack of distrustful options you're given#i feel like a lot was sacrificed in order to clearly present the themes the route wanted to convey#which im fine with! the route is fantastic#but having those would've been nice imo#paranoid is literally there#feel free to fight me about it i would love to hear different perspectives in the notes#anyway too many tags wrap it up chop chop#slay the princess#slay the princess the pristine cut#melly.txt

My g/t hot take that no one asked for:
Anything above 30 feet is not a mini giant. Sure, in comparison to other giants in fiction, that's not that big, but think about encountering, say, a 40 ft giant in real life. That is huge. You are the size of, like, a barbie doll to them. That is not mini.
Also, in my opinion, the fun part about minigiants is the unique size dynamic. They can fit in your house, but will still be too big for it to feel normal. They can't carry you in one hand, but they can carry you around like a stuffed animal. Encountering one isn't as inherently dangerous as encountering a regular giant would be, but they still have the potential to be scary if they aren't careful (or if they're trying to be). The dynamic is a little different with minigiants, and a lot of that nuance begins to fade above 30 feet.
Again, this is just my opinion, but it comes from my experience of writing different size dynamics. I think a lot of people tend to classify minigiants based on how big they are in comparison to other giants, when we should be looking at how big they are in comparison to a human, which is where all the fun dynamics come in to play.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
#g/t community#g/t#giant/tiny#g/t concept#minigiant#mini giant#mini giantess#em honks#at some point this kind of turned into a minigiant appreciation post#which isnt a bad thing!#its just not what i set put to do lol#also i didn't want the post to get too long so i didnt include this but i think it needs to be said#i think the lower limit for minigiants should be around 8-9 feet#because thats when things like having to duck under doorframes and hitting ceilings comes into play#which are peak minigiant tropes#let me clarify that i mean IN FICTION#dont call irl people minigiants#also if you see this and you're thinking âem what the hell are you on aboutâ#this is mainly in response to that one post that gives different classifications to tinies/giants based on size#it lists 10-40 feet as a minigiant which doesn't feel right to me#and ive seen other writers refer to their giants as minigiants seemingly based on that post#when by all accounts they shouldn't he#at least based on the other descriptions of said giants#no hate to the person who made that post!!!!#btw#i just have a lot of feelings on the matter#clearly#em YAPS

So much experimenting to be done, where to even start (Patreon)
#Doodles#Handplates#UT#Fellplates#Gaster#Papyrus#Sans#Mostly silliness :) Mostly :)#It's still fun to draw these two Gasters next to each other hehe âȘ Even interacting!#They're more similar than I think either of them would admit haha - ''No clearly we have very different ideals'' sure but you're both Gaster#I like the idea of classic being So Annoyed at any iteration of himself thinking positively towards humans haha#I mean it would probably hurt - that's a big piece of his trauma! - but on the surface it's just Ugh I can't believe this -.Ăł#I feel like they'd have a lot more common ground when it comes to their experiments tho - not a perfect Venn Diagram but enough!#Maybe even just different enough to offer a new perspective - enough to give them new ideas! Uh oh that's never a good thing lol#I do love Fell!Gaster just so pleased to be having a conversation haha so smiley - classic still not smiling but interested!#Cute face <3#It was after making the Toriel comic that the thought Really occurred to me - like obviously I saw so I knew they were still in the gowns#But it took a bit for that to strike me as odd since I mean that's just what they wear! That's normal! For Handplates anyway#He talks a lot about isolating whatever it is in Monsters that Make Them Like That - what does that entail#Gaster no seriously what are you doing to them don't just smile actually reply#And as much as I like the boys being a bit more Fell-ish I've always been of the opinion that no matter what they're brothers!#They love each other <3 And in Fellplates they'd have to rely on each other even more than regular Underfell#If anything would cause some codependency it's the Handplates setup - no matter what version you throw at it!#They're still both delicate little things - they need each other to survive â„ If Gaster is sometimes kind to them well...#Similar to Mercyplates but Not Quite hmmmm#At least sometimes doing cute and harmless things tho! Studies how they react to flowers and teaches them to make chains hehe âȘ#There's also that Underfell thing of Sans calling UF!Papyrus ''Boss'' rather than ''Bro'' yeah? Doodling ideas around that haha#An opportunity to teach! Sans only came away with the basics tho it probably annoys Gaster lol#The idea of them doing cute harmless little things and /that/ being what gets under his skin hehehehe#And ending with a Babybones! :D Surely he'd have no problem being attached since they're meant to be good...? Surely

something that makes me sad is when people tell me the healthy communication in my writing is "unrealistic."
like guys this is how me and my partner talk with eachother... I'm writing from personal experience...
#like it's sad both on the front of 'dehumanizing my real life'#but also on the front of 'you deserve to have healthy communication in your life'#like if you think this is unrealistic it means more than likely you havent experienced someone being patient and understanding with you#and that makes me very very sad#I'm sorry#also it's just rude to tell me my writing is unrealistic LOL like hey#real people talk all kinds of ways. shut up#I've been told it's also in part cause they always understand their own feelings when theyre talking#but I'm like...#theyre like mid 30-early 40 and theyre immortal and theyre going through a lot of shit#I feel like theyve thought about it a lot#also the comic takes place over the course of a year so far#we're seeing the big moments and the fun mysteries#so#its about grown men who love eachother#sorry that they think about what they want to say before they say it#also as if adam isnt constantly wrong and steve isnt constantly pushing shit down#he's only JUST RECENTLY starting to share his emotions as they come up#instead of pretending theyre not there and letting things boil over#I think people just THINK theyre communicating way too clearly because their partner#who loves them#is listening and responding with kindness#like..#idk I have a lot of thoughts about this#would LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE for this to spark a discussion#and especially for it to cause people to reread a little more critically#and perhaps even introspect on their own ideas of communication standards#I've been with my partner for 10 years. this is how we talk to eachother

MAN I'm seriously so sad about season 2. Bc I wish act 2 had the same emotional impact on me as it appears to have on so many others. But rn I'm just somewhere between unable to care and actively annoyed by some of those writing decisions. Seriously the more I think about it the less I like it.
#act 3 come through please đ#I don't think it can salvage some of the things I have contentions with but still... please...#don't ask me about the silco vander flashback with jinxs + vis mom#or the bizzare choice to do so much of the storytelling through this weird music video format they've got going on#completely stripping it of the weight these plot beats could've had if they were... normal scenes#and also missing the point of how the music was used in season 1 and what made it so effective#bc it was complementary to instead of replacing the storytelling#seriously don't ask me about these things I will spontaneously implode on the spot#whyyyyy would they recontextualize season 1 like this with that flashback#to me it kind of ruins the character dynamics and themes in s1. it just makes me so sad you have no idea#also what even are they doing with Jinx rn for real#aaarghhhh just... so many things that are making me scratch my head#also I'm so terribly sorry but I could not care less about Isha sorry lol#like i get that its sad conceptually but she was such a non-character that i struggle to feel impacted at all#same with sky tbh. i thought her role in s1 was alright but there is so much emotional weight put on her now#in terms of her relationship to Viktor but that was barely established so it's weird to have her around#and clearly you're supposed to care but they haven't given me much reason to#isha and sky were non-characters just there to die to further the development of other characters#they didn't really have anything going on on their own and that's just a type of character and plot device that does nothing for me#also i thought the war between zaun and piltover + internal struggles in zaun bc silcos gone would be the main focus#but that stuff seems so sidetracked rn#also sorry i dont like what they did with vander and warwick either. that man should've stayed dead lol#it honestly just makes his death feel less impactful and i dont know what this is supposed to do for the story or the themes???#that just feels like a pointless plotline that is taking up time that could've been spent on other things#i just... i could go on like this for a while like there are so many things that just puzzle me#it's so weird considering how tight and thematically consistent season 1 was#let's see where act 3 goes but... i kinda have a bad feeling about it ngl#obv im glad others are enjoying it and this is just my opinion! also a lot of this are probs just my personal tastes anyway#arcane spoilers

All Iâm going to say I think now that my brain remembered part of what it was thinking is that Taylor and Joe went through a lot together (good and bad) and regardless of how it ended or what led to it they both seem to be determined to keep that private and not throw each other under the bus and in the end theyâre just two very, very different people whose outlooks in the long term were just never going to align and never has that been clearer.
#I AM NOT DEFENDING HIM JUST TO BE CLEAR#Iâm just saying⊠he said a lot of nothing in those quotes beyond âpeople on the internet suckâ#which is true#and both he and Taylor are keeping things close to the vest about it all#and just seems to me that whatever they went through together they are determined to keep it between them so thatâs the end of that#(again in contrast to how she has no qualms about reading m for filth)#heâs just some guy and now he gets to be just some guy forever#and she gets to be extraordinary#like yes the loving committed thing raises eyebrows given how much pain she was in#but like he could have shaded her about how it ended too and he didnât#AND I AM NOT DEFENDING HIM#we know he was a terrible partner and she felt like shit#Iâm just saying neither of them want to delve into the specifics and i think theyâre just moving into footnotes in each otherâs lives now#like i want to make it clear AGAIN I am not condoning anything on his part here â clearly there were huge issues#Iâm just saying just because he may have sucked as a partner doesnât mean the internet being cruel isnât also true idk#and yes itâs transparent why heâs choosing to speak out now (or rather why the Sunday times is choosing to reach out to him now)#but like⊠idk i just canât muster up any feeling about this man one way or the other lol#and take cues from Taylor (and even him) sheâs determined to keep it between them other than the broad strokes#so Iâm following her/their lead#(like I have thoughts about why but thatâs not important and ultimately is just⊠itâs the most normal of ltr breakups)#like he just sounds a little pretentious with his âreal lifeâ which like⊠good on him keep living that real life you do you dude#meanwhile his ex is flourishing with every passing week and milestone and is living her unabashed best life#and theyâre probably both happier for it now
