To go along with the list of Jewish fantasy novels that has been circulating Tumblr, I just read a Jewish horror novel, The Tribe by Bari Wood.
It's a story about golems and it was very good
if you have any other Jewish horror recommendations please let me know

I, too, wonder why there aren't more movies about dybbuks, sheydim, etc. Why isn't there more overtly Jewish horror? I feel like @jessicalprice or @postingtreyf has talked about this

Hanukkah Horror Nights!
In honor of Hanukkah starting next week, I plan to spend that holiday posting reviews for horror based around Jewish folklore!
I’ve got a few more to watch to fill out the whole 8 days, but it was surprisingly easy to find enough to fill out the list.
I’m hoping to do more religious holiday specials like this, since horror with a basis in religious folklore is one of my favorite things the genre has to offer.
if you want to keep a special eye out for the posts for this event I’ll have them tagged “Hanukkah Horror Nights” And “Jewish Horror”
This year, since the blog is still so new, I plan to focus on more contemporary-ish movies. But in the future, I plan to hunt down older films. I’m also willing to take suggestions from other horror buffs to build the next list!
If you’d like to watch along, here’s the Watch List:
The Possession (2012)
The Vigil (2019)
The Offering (2022)
Attachment (2022)
The Unborn (2009)
The Golem (2018)
Demon (2015)
Hanukkah (2019)

This movie was kinda fucking nuts, dude 😳 A very interesting personal struggle to fuel the plot in that the main character doesn't want to have kids but feels the pressure to do so, so she attempts to have her biological clock "fixed" with cutting edge therapy. Aaaaaand that's when things start to get weird. A really well done psychological horror that definitely surprised me. I'm also surprised by the low rating this has gotten so far because it's seriously a damn good movie. It probably just gets a little too fucked up for the mainstream. Bit of a slow burn, as psychological horrors are, but consistently engaging and increasingly entertaining. 7.5/10 on Hulu. Check it out.

When the Belzec concentration camp was liberated in 1945, no one could explain how a group of Jewish captives had not only survived but thrived, appearing better fed than their Nazi captors. Thirty-five years later in New York, the youths responsible for the murder of a rabbi’s son are found hideously slain, covered in a strange gray powder. What is the connection between these events? That is the mystery that Rachel Levy and Det. Roger Hawkins must unravel, a mystery that will hold readers spellbound as terrible truths emerge from the nightmare of the past.

Do you think maybe that there’s a chance you are REALLY, REALLY behind on current events & the statue is the beast? I mean literally. Like the statue sits there until the apocalypse & then it turns out it’s an actual robot that a consciousness can switch into when they decide it’s the right day. I’m sorry to be scary, but It is. It’s not just a warning. This is really happening, just like all those other signs you see are also there. It’s there because it’s supposed to be hidden in plain sight to then be switched on, just like other things/statues/etc hidden in plain sight. You’ve been warned many, many times, but each time until the end there’s always a chance to change the future. It’s never hopeless, but you have to come to terms with the fact this has been right in front of you for a very long time. Do you want to take it seriously or do you want to ignore it till it’s too late? The decision is always in your hands.

ARTICLE DATE: 11.2022
Someone asked if I ever wrote stuff that wasn’t erotic. I wrote this one back in 2018 – it’s a horror short that contains violence but nothing sexual.
I promise.
It’s about four Eastern-Euro salvagers who locate the lost ‘Amber Room’ of legend in Poland and find more than they bargained for in the bunker where its hidden.

also are there any Jewish horror movies? is that a thing?
Coping with trauma by watching horror and could use some recommendations so I can turn my brain off and just watch (streaming on Shudder or Max or AMC+)
any recommendations welcome, but especially deep cuts, hidden gems, & cult classics

The Offering (2023)
Tumblr media
A family struggling with loss find themselves at the mercy of an ancient demon trying to destroy them from the inside.
Where to watch: Hulu
Rating: 9/10
Hot DAMN this one was good. This one is a very Jewish movie and doesn’t try to be anything but. Not bridging the gap between Jewish and Christian aesthetics. Just focused.
Every shot feels like it serves a purpose. There’s a fantastic use of color and tone and attention to detail. Some really grounded, human, and lovely moments.
The movie is done a disservice by its jumpscares and some of the more hammy parts of the end. But overall, it’s a really great movie.
Definitely one for the rec list.
