Book Reviews :
I got this book based on the blurb from Tamora Pierce. I am honestly so glad that I did. This was a fast paced, high fantasy young adult book. I wasn’t bored once reading this and I finished it sooner than I expected. I do recommend this book for a quick fantasy read.

Brewed Bitter (Caius V. x Leah C.)
Brewed Bitter
(Caius V. & Leah C. One shot)
Disclaimer: Both characters depicted in this one shot are single, consenting adults.
Slightly AU. Timeline of Twilight has been altered a bit and Leah is not a shifter YET in this one shot. Thanks for reading! Warnings: Cursing & Insults. Thats about it.
Volterra, Italy
Working as a barista was certainly not how Leah Clearwater pictured spending her summer. She especially never would have guessed that she would be working as a barista in Italy.
But coming here had been a no brainer. It was all part of a study abroad program offered by Forks Community College. Pay a little bit of extra tuition, and you too can earn some extra college credits while studying for your degree, abroad… at least this was what the brochure said. Only Leah wasn't taking any classes. She had signed up into some weird work program that she hadn't bothered reading all the fine details on as she hastily signed the forms so she could turn them back into the school as quickly as possible.
This work program was meant to help students see if studying abroad was a good fit for them. You pick a program and a location, and instead of taking a gamble in the fall, you'd be sent to work a small, unimportant job over the summer in the location you chose to see if you even liked being abroad.
To be honest Leah couldn't give any less of a shit about studying abroad. She had just needed to get away from Washington. So, she took the first opportunity that presented itself to her.
She needed to get away from the pitying looks of her parents and her little brother Seth. She needed to get away from all the stares on the reservation as everyone whispered to one another about her mysterious breakup with her ex, Sam.
Leah didn't want to hear any more speculations or rumors about why Sam had dumped her and only weeks later ended up dating her cousin Emily after she was mauled by a bear. People liked to speculate that Sam had been cheating on her with Emily for a while, and that his strange disappearance months ago was probably just some act to hide the affair he had been having.
Why else would he have dumped Leah so quickly after coming home? Why else would Sam have, all of the sudden, been following her cousin all around the reservation like a love-struck puppy the very day after Leah had introduced the two of them?
Why else would Sam and Emily be engaged hardly eight months after Emily got out of the hospital after her attack? An attack that took place only a few weeks after Sam returned home.
Leah had been so lost in her thoughts that the girl next to her behind the bar lightly elbowed her in the ribs to get her attention.
Sabrina, a local from Volterra who had been working in this small coffee shop for three years and had therefore had her fair share of incompetent students as coworkers, shoved a tray with seven different ceramic coffee mugs into Leah's hands and rattled off what was in each cup as quickly as she could as she and two other baristas attended to the long line of customers.
"If you aren't going to make any drinks then how about you start dropping these off to the patrons waiting at their tables?" Sabrina hissed under her breath. "The two cappuccinos go to the elderly ladies by the windows, the tea latte goes to the young girl with the book over by the cypress plant, the americanos go to the three gentlemen with the laptops at the center table, and the marocchino goes to teenager by the charging station at the back. Go!"
Leah could only curse under her breath as Sabrina lightly pushed her toward the little swinging divider that would let the baristas exit the area behind the bar and step into the café.
This café was a nice little place. It was very bright and open due to the fact that three of the four walls had many large windows that were all open due to the nice weather. There were many small tables and squashy chairs to relax in, that was probably why this place was so popular.
Nearly every table was taken aside from a small group of tables near the back corner away from the windows where only one man was sitting with his back to her. Leah had thought that since the clouds that had covered the sky this morning finally dissipated enough to allow the sun to shine through that more people would be willing to take their drinks to go and maybe she wouldn't have to wait the tables.
But of course, she was wrong. The sudden beautiful weather had no effect at all on all the patron's desires to sit inside and enjoy their coffees at the tables and chat with their families and friends.
This place isn't even air conditioned, Leah complained mentally as she dropped off the first set of drinks to the two ladies by the window nearest to the door, Seriously it's hot as fucking balls in here.
She could feel her long black pants and her collared white shirt sticking to her in the heat as she weaved her way through the tables and deposited the drinks to the people waiting without stopping to spare a single one of them even the slightest glance. She passed a couple who had pulled their chairs together so they were both sitting on the same side of their little round table. The girl giggled as she pointed something out in the magazine she was looking at to the man beside her.
These two probably wouldn't have attracted Leah's notice at all if it hadn't been for the fact that she noticed that what the woman was pointing at in the magazine was a selection of different bridesmaid dresses.
Emily's face, her expression nervous and sincere, swam to the front of Leah's mind.
"It really would mean so much to us if you would be one of the bridesmaids Leah," Emily smiled, but the smile didn't quite touch her eyes. Her eyes were too sad to fit with the rest of the expression her face was making.
"To us?" Leah's own emotionless voice responded. She had been in shock. Her brain had hardly finished processing Emily's words of "Sam and I are getting married" before Emily had said this.
Before Emily had asked her to be a bridesmaid.
Emily's expression did not change much, but there was just the tiniest amount of hope that had suddenly bloomed on her face as she nodded.
"Yes. To me and to Sam. Please Leah. You mean so much to us."
There had been no words. Leah had not responded. She had turned on her heel and went back into her house after shutting the front door in Emily's hurt face.
For the rest of that week Leah hardly ventured outside of her house. She did a couple of times at first, but she was met with so many stares and whispers as the news of Emily and Sam's engagement spread around the reservation that she just couldn't take it anymore and refused to be around anyone who would look at her and whisper behind their hands.
And then she ended up at Forks Community College and found herself applying to work abroad for the summer. She had just needed to get away. She needed to get somewhere where no one would call her and ask her if she was okay. Where no one would ask what happened with Sam.
Where someone couldn't call her and ask her to be a bridesmaid in their wedding when they both broke her fucking heart.
Leah was nearing the back of the café and only had one cup of coffee left to bring to the kid at the charging station, so rather than balancing one cup on the tray like an idiot she just took the drink in one hand and set down the tray on one of the empty tables she was passing.
What she hadn't been expecting was the loner she had seen at this grouping of tables to stand abruptly in front of here in the isle.
He turned to face her, and she walked right into him.
It was like walking into a fucking wall. The dude did not budge at all when she slammed into him, and she was forced to stumble back a step to keep her footing as she cursed under her breath. When she had walked into him, the drink she had been holding was jostled between the two of them.
Hot coffee spilled over her hand and she yelped in surprise. It took all of her self-control not to drop the cup onto the floor and let it shatter.
The guy she had run into however, wasn't so lucky. Most of the hot coffee spilled right down the front of his shirt.
For a moment Leah was a little horrified, expecting the man to yell out in pain as what was basically boiling hot bean water and milk soaked his shirt.
Her horror very quickly vanished when he hissed "Watch where you're going chihuahua face!"
He had said it low enough that she was sure, in this loud ass café, that only she could her him. She had to look up at him to see his face, and she was a tall girl at 5 foot 9 inches.
He was platinum blonde and pale as a sheet, the most color on him was the coffee staining his crisp white shirt. That and his weird purple-ish colored eyes. Her first thought of him was that he was definitely no more than a pretty boy with a superiority complex. His whole face was aligned in such a way that she was sure he fit the perfect image for these European models, and him being full of himself enough to wear these colored contacts to make him stand out more only put up another red flag that this dude was definitely the embodiment of a fuckboy.
He had an ugly scowl on his face and the first thing that came out of her mouth was "The fuck did you just call me?"
"You heard me you imbecile," He scoffed, motioning to his ruined shirt, "You already had enough of a puss on your face when you were working behind the bar. Walking around the café scowling at everyone as you bring them their drinks really doesn't do anything for your looks."
Leah could feel her mouth hanging open just the slightest bit and she couldn't find it in her to be stung at his words. All she could think of was the fact that since he was talking to her like this, she now had the green light to fire back.
She very obviously appraised him, looking him up and down with the most disgusted look she could manage.
"You're one to talk about anyone walking around with a puss on their face." She scoffed back at him, "Where did you get your contacts? I really need to find something to draw attention to the fact that my father didn't hug me enough as a child but my t-shirt that says daddy issues on it wasn't quite enough."
"I mean-," Leah switched her expression to the most sarcastic, mocking look she could manage. "It seems like you already got past that faze and have it all figured out, that's why I'm asking."
Now it was blondies turn to have his mouth part in surprise. To her left Leah heard two girls giggling, and one glance over showed her that two teenagers were watching her and the blonde man, both covering their mouths with their hands to stifle their laughter.
This only seemed to incite him, which in itself really wasn't that surprising considering assholes like him never took it well when girls laughed at them.
"At least I'm not enough of an idiot that I go walking into people while I'm obviously lost in thought thinking about how the whole world is against me and oh woe is me I can't tolerate seeing all these happy couples sitting together."
Leah could feel the shock on her face, and blondie smirked at her, seeing that he was right in his earlier speculations.
After all, the only reason Caius Volturi even came to this busy café in the center of Volterra was to watch all the drama unfold between the humans. Aro had suggested he started people watching a few months ago to get himself out of a rut and get out of the castle every now and again. Especially after his breakup with Athenadora. Because of course she had found someone else who she had deemed a more fitting mate than himself.
This coffee shop had been the obvious choice. Most humans were usually so self-absorbed and caught up in their own lives they never noticed the gossip, the break ups, the fights, and all the other juicy conversations bubbling around them in a setting like this.
This girl was no different. Obviously she was another exchange student from America here on a work program during the summer. This café and a law firm a mile down the road were the only places in Volterra that participated in the program.
"What? Did your boyfriend dump you a few weeks ago?" Caius said in a mock baby voice, "Is that why you came all the way here? To get away and find yourself again?"
Leah didn't know what reaction he expected from her, but he obviously hadn't been expecting her to glance down at the cup in her hand, see there was still some coffee in it, and willingly splash the rest all over the front of his shirt while grinning the whole time.
She had been very careful to make sure the rest of it stained the collar of his shirt where the coffee had missed when she walked into him.
His surprise was comical. He actually took a step back from her.
She giggled. "Oh no! You know I would say I'm sorry, but you look like an asshole, so no."
The two teenage girls started giggling so hard that it was obvious to everyone in a ten-foot radius what they were laughing at. There was an elderly couple just behind her right shoulder that she couldn't see that were watching her and Caius in amusement, fondly shaking their heads at each other as if they knew what this was all about and had seen this plenty of times before.
Blondie opened and closed his mouth multiple times in the next ten seconds before he spluttered, "I could kill you!" in a whisper low enough that Leah was sure only she knew what he had said. But his shock when he said the words took all of the menace out of them.
"And so could a toddler or a very dedicated duck." She gave him the sweetest smile she could manage, "You're not special, but go off I guess."
It was a surprise that his face didn't get flush with anger when he said "Where is your manager? You need an attitude adjustment."
Leah raised her eyebrows at him, "You're one to talk about an attitude adjustment!"
She didn't answer his question though. Her gut seemed to twist into a knot as she realized the implications of him going to a manager. If he went up to one of the managers or the owner and told them what she had did and said – and he had proof too because of the huge, wet coffee stain all down the front of his shirt – she could be fired. And if she was fired, she would have to go back home.
Back to La Push. Back to all the stares and the judgement.
Back to Emily and Sam's pitying looks.
"And let's not even get started on why you're here all alone." Leah waved a hand to motion to the solitary table he had been sitting at. "A pretty face like yours but still no date to share a cup of coffee with. I'm sure any woman who goes out with you just melts at your charms. I was going to ask who pissed in your cereal this morning, but I think I figured it out."
She gave him and condescendingly sweet look, jutting her lower lip out in a pout. "Did you get stood up again? You know it might help if you stopped wearing that candy perfume you've got on. It really burns the nose."
Caius' attention was on her lips, he couldn't not focus on them when she pouted like that. He had quite a few suggestions on what she could do with that smart mouth of hers.
"Get me your manager." He said icily. "I'd like them to see what you've done to my shirt."
That wiped the sickly-sweet look right off of Leah's face. She felt her cheeks heat up with anger as she spat "I'll clean your stupid fucking shirt."
Caius smirked at her, showing most of his teeth, "Oh really? And when do you plan to do that?"
"I probably won't be off until sundown." She made sure her expression was a haughty as she could manage, hating that smirk on his face. This place was open late, and it would take two hours to clean the café after closing at seven. "Bring back your shirt then and I'll take care of it."
"Good." He was grinning at her in the most patronizing way. He knew how much it injured her pride to have to clean his shirt for him. It probably hurt her pride almost as much as the idea of this mouthy, infuriating woman cleaning for him stroked his ego. He reached up a hand and lightly touched her under the chin with his knuckles. "I'll see you later then…"
He trailed off, looking down at her name tag. "Leah."
And then he turned to go, and Leah snapped, "And you are?" from behind him as he picked up his book off the table and headed for the door.
He turned back to look at her for just the briefest second. "Caius."
BREAK
Leah and the three other employees who had closed with her all stepped out of the café. Cleaning had taken longer than usual tonight since they had been so busy during the day and therefore needed to restock almost everything. The sun was going down and it was twilight in the streets as Sabrina locked the doors behind them and everyone went their separate ways.
None of her coworkers seemed to notice the man sitting on a bench across the street from the café. She liked to think that they probably would have stayed with her if they did, but almost immediately she found herself alone. She and Caius were staring at one another from across the road.
He did not stand from the bench as she came toward him, and it was only when she was directly in front of him that she realized-
"Are you still wearing that fucking shirt?" Leah snapped in disbelief, staring at the now dry coffee stain that had all but ruined the crisp white fabric.
He raised an eyebrow at her as he leaned back with a smirk, "Oh I was worried you might not recognize me if I changed into something else. You've already proven you can be pretty daft."
"And you've already proven you can be quite an asshole." Leah countered
"Quite." Caius agreed, still grinning. "I must say you really have to be desperate to keep your crappy barista job if you're willing to personally clean my shirt for me. You really don't want to be sent home that badly? Your stupid little boyfriend really hurt you that much that you need to cross an ocean to cope with it?"
Leah knew she couldn't tell him he was wrong. When he had guessed at this earlier and she had poured the rest of the coffee on him she had all but proven him right with her reaction.
"Talk about the pot calling the kettle black." Leah snapped at him. Of course, she wasn't positive she was right in the assumption that he had been broken up with too – his reaction to her claim of him being stood up hadn't been as obvious as he reaction to him talking about an ex – but she just had a gut feeling there was something there as well.
Caius stood, and that patronizing expression was back on his face. "With your smart mouth I wouldn't have pegged you as a coward."
"I'm not a coward for refusing to acknowledge the ex who dumped me days after I introduced him to my cousin and wanting to get away from all the pitying looks at home because said cousin just asked me to be a bridesmaid in their wedding." She would have screamed the words if she could, they felt so good to finally get out, but her anger was so intense that the words were hardly more than a bitter whisper.
Blondies eyebrows shot up, "Wow. That's… fucked. Honestly. That's fucked."
"Thank you!" Leah exploded, throwing her hands up in the air, "Finally someone fucking gets it!"
It was silent for a few heart beats.
"And what's your deal?" She grumbled at him, watching as his expression went hard for a brief second before he sighed.
"My wife left me rather abruptly because she found someone more suitable for her." Caius answered begrudgingly.
"Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who's bitter." Leah scoffed. She appraised Caius again, looking him up and down just like she had in the café earlier. But this time it wasn't to be bitchy, this time it was an actual speculation.
Even though he wasn't her usual type, he definitely was a fine piece of ass.
And the look Caius was giving her showed that he was probably thinking the exact same thing.
After all, what better way to get over someone than to get under someone else?
"So... are we fuckin' or killin' each other tonight?" Leah asked when their eyes met after appraising one another, her words causing him to chuckle.
"Oh, I'll leave that part up to you."
"Let's go back to my studio then... so I can take care of your shirt."
Caius smirked at her, waving a hand in front of him vaguely. "Lead the way."

THERE’S NO FURY ANYMORE, no bad blood at all. leah forgave and forgot the winchesters a long time ago. life is far, far, too long to bear a grudge about someone stabbing you in the chest with a cypress tree branch. and she wasn’t permanently killed. when the first apocalypse never came to pass (she discovered later), she was brought back for the inevitable second go. death is such a minor inconvenience.
“hi dean.” her voice is flat, hollow, and it doesn’t match her bubbly cheerleader form. it rings of ancient emptiness. she doubts dean will remember her -- he was a hunter, and they are not the sharpest, and she has had a makeover since then. she abandoned the form of leah gideon, but kept her name. she likes it. “long time no see. done any more dirty work for heaven lately?”

Dean never came back until early the next morning. You were afraid he died or had gotten seriously hurt when he stumbled into the motel room with blood all over his hands.
“What the hell, are you okay?” you ask as you check for signs of injury.
“I’m fine. It’s—it’s not my blood. Paul’s dead.”
“What?!” Sam gasps.
“Jane shot him.”
“It’s starting,” Castiel comments from the couch.
No matter how much water you gave him last night, he still is a little bit wasted.
“What’s starting? Where the hell have you been?”
“On a bender.”
“Did he—did you say ‘on a bender’?”
“Yeah. He’s still pretty wasted,” you wave it off.
“It is not of import. We need to talk about what’s happening here.”
“I’m all ears,” Dean says and washes the blood off his hands.
“Well, for starters, Leah is not a real prophet,” you reveal.
“Well, what is she, exactly?” the elder brother asks as he wipes his hands and takes a seat by the coffee table.
“The whore,” the angel says.
“Wow. Cas, tell us what you really think.”
“She rises when Lucifer walks the earth. ‘And she shall come, bearing false prophecy’,” he reads from the book in front of him. “This creature has the power to take a human’s form and read minds. Book of Revelation calls her ‘the Whore of Babylon’.”
“The real Leah was probably killed months ago,” you sigh.
“What about the demons attacking the town?” Dean asks.
“They’re under her control.”
“And the Enochian exorcism?”
“Fake. It actually means, ‘you, um, breed with the mouth of a goat’,” he snickers. No one else is laughing, and he immediately stops. “It’s funnier in Enochian.”
“So the demons smoking out is just a con? Why? What’s the endgame?”
“What you just saw—innocent blood spilled in God’s name.”
“You heard all that heaven talk. She manipulates people,” Sam sighs.
“To slaughter and kill and sing preppy little hymns. Awesome,” Dean scoffs.
“Her goal is to condemn as many souls to hell as possible. And it’s just beginning. She’s well on her way to dragging this whole town into the pit.”
“Alright. Then, how do we go Pimp of Babylon all over this bitch?”
“I got just the thing. Wait here,” Castiel leaves without warning.
He comes back seconds later with a stake and sets it on the table.
“The whore can be killed with that. It’s a stake made from a cypress tree in Babylon.”
“Great. Let’s ventilate her,” Dean smiles.
“It’s not that easy.”
“Of course, it isn’t,” you sigh.
“The whore can only be killed by a true Servant of Heaven.”
“Servant like—”
“Not you,” the angel cuts off your boyfriend. “Or me. Sam, of course, is an abomination. We’ll have to find someone else.”
“What about me? I don’t want to bring this up and sound like a bitch, but I didn’t domino the 66 seals. I’ve never sold my soul. I never went to hell. I didn’t unlock Lucifer or start the apocalypse or was hopped up on demon blood. I’m a light witch, the purest one. I may be Amara’s vessel, but I haven’t done anything to warrant otherwise.”
“She’s right,” Castiel comments.
“Cheap shot,” Dean mutters. “But true.”
“Great, I’ll kill her. But we need to get past her dad first.”
“I’ll go get him,” the angel offers and disappears once more.
“You know, you didn’t have to go there,” Dean mutters.
“I know, I’m so sorry. I wasn’t thinking,” you sigh.
“Yeah, you seem to do a lot of that nowadays,” Sam adds.
You’re about to say something when Castiel returns with Pastor Gideon. He seems spooked that he hitched a ride with an angel, but you can tell he’s one of the good ones.
“What the hell was that?”
“Yeah, he wasn’t lying about the angel thing,” Dean says because he already knows what Castiel might have said to him. “Have a seat, Padre. We got to have a chat.”
It wasn’t easy to have that conversation with a grieving man, but when the story is done, he stares at the stake in your hands with discomfort.
“No. She’s my daughter.”
“I’m sorry, but she’s not. She’s the thing that killed your daughter,” you put softly.
“That’s impossible.”
“But it’s true, and deep down, you know it. Look, we get it—it’s too much. But if you don’t do this, she’s going to kill a lot of people. And damn the rest to hell.”
“It’s just… why me? Why did you tell me this?”
“She trusts you. We need you to get her alone so I can kill her.”
Leah is up to something, but you can’t focus on what she’s doing right now. The only thing you need to do right now is to kill her with this damn stake. Then, you can go back to the motel and finally tell Dean what you’ve been keeping from him for weeks now. Leah strays from the group and goes to the office which gives you a perfect chance to get her. Everyone knew what they wanted to do, and even though her father didn’t need to be there, he wanted to.
She enters the office and checks herself out in the mirror. Peeking around the corner, you saw her face change from what she normally looks like to this god-awful monster with a gaping mouth. She chuckles and closes the closet door where Castiel is waiting. She gasps, he grabs her, and turns her around. He keeps her close to his body so you have your chance at killing her.
You rush into the room with the stake in your hand. She realizes she needs to get out of this or else she’s dead. She chants something in Enochian which causes Castiel a great amount of pain. He lets her go, and she uses her powers to throw both brothers against the wall. She does this to her own dad before turning to you. She goes to use her powers, but she only manages to knock the stake out of your hand.
“Sorry, sweetheart,” your eyes turn blue, “try harder.”
She takes the shot and punches you square in the jaw, causing you to crumble to the ground. She takes off running into some other room, and your magic works on the bruise you know will show up later and grab the stake. Sam, Dean, and Gideon have no choice but to leave Castiel writhing in pain on the floor.
“Help me! She’s a demon!” Leah yells as soon as she enters.
You rush into the room only to be greeted with angry townsfolk. They go to punch and restrain you, and the stake is knocked to the ground. Sam, Dean, and Gideon enter the room to help fight so you can get to Leah. Rob has clear instructions to light the kerosene in front of a closet door where you can hear the people locked inside begging to be let out. Sam rushes over to him and takes care of him while Dean and Gideon fight off the men in your way.
Because you’re so preoccupied, Leah manages to use her powers on you which knocks you to the ground. Your eyes shine brighter than they have before, but there is too much on your mind to muster up enough power to get out of her grasp. She pounces on your body and grabs your throat, squeezing to cut off your air supply. It’s hard to concentrate, but you extend your arm to the stake that lays nearby. If you can only grab it, then you can kill her.
“Please. Like you’re a servant of Heaven,” she scoffs when she sees you reach for the stake.
She doesn’t do anything to stop you because she wholeheartedly believes you are not a servant. No matter what, you can’t give up now.
“You’re the great and mighty vessel for Amara? You’re pathetic! Would a servant of Heaven get pregnant and then kill her own child? Taking a life that is so innocent and pure? This is why my team’s gonna win, and you’re just gonna sit back and watch it happen.”
Once the stake is in your hands, you send out a wave of magic over her which knocks her off guard. Instead of delivering a one liner, you just went straight for the kill. You shove the stake through her heart, and she gasps when she realizes that she’s going to die because of you. She falls off your body, and you scoot back to watch her shake and burn. Everyone else is quiet and stops fighting when this happens, and Sam helps you to your feet. Her face changes from her normal one to the monster one, and then her body ignites in flames. The stake disappears, leaving behind a burning hole where it entered her body.
“But I don’t understand,” Jane whimpers. “How are we supposed to get to paradise now?
“I’m sorry. Pretty sure you’re headed in a different direction,” Dean says, but he’s clearly distracted.
Everyone heard what she has to say, and you can’t seem to meet Dean’s eyes. He finally knows, and it didn’t even come from you.
“How’s the head?” Dean asks the pastor back at the motel room.
He and Sam were patching him up while Castiel rests on the bed. Once Leah died, the spell she put on him wore off.
“I’m seeing double. But that may be the painkillers,” he chuckles as Sam wraps his arm up.
“You’ll be okay.”
“No. I won’t,” he whispers.
Dean finishes with the bandages, and he turns when he makes eye contact with you. There is so much emotion behind his eyes, you can’t be in the same room as him.
“Excuse me,” you whisper and head outside to the car.
“Are we going to pretend that I didn’t hear what she said back there?” Dean says.
He followed you outside so that you two could have some kind of privacy.
“What she said?” you ask, trying to play dumb when you know it’s not going to work.
“Y/N don’t fuck with me. Leah wouldn’t have said that if it wasn’t true. Is it true? Were you pregnant?”
“I wanted you to hear it from me,” you cry. “I found out a couple of weeks ago. I made Castiel get rid of it.”
“You did what?” he says in a low and dark tone.
That means he is beyond pissed.
“We agreed to not raise a child in this life, Dean. I thought this is what we both wanted!”
“You didn't think to tell me any of this?” he finally yells. “Did you even care what I want?”
“Of course, Dean! But we talked about it! How can we raise a child in this life together right now? With Lucifer? Michael? Amara? The apocalypse?”
“It doesn’t matter what we discussed, Y/N! You got pregnant, and you killed it! Without even thinking of me! What, did you think I was never going to find out? Does Sam know?”
“Yes,” you whisper.
“Oh great, everyone knew but me. I’m so glad you decided to hide this from me. You’re supposed to be my family, Y/N!”
“Dean, I am. This decision has been eating me alive. I panicked. I didn’t know what to do.”
“Not killing the baby would have been step one! That was my child!” he screams.
“Dean, please, I’m so sorry,” you cry.
“Leave me alone,” he shakes his head.
“Dean, please stay and let’s talk about this.”
“I can’t even look at you right now,” he gets into his car angrily.
He starts her up and peels out of the parking lot in a screech of tires. Your whole world comes crashing down around you, and your knees buckle from the weight. Arms wrap around your body to keep you from falling, and you turn in his arms to bury your head in his chest.
“He hates me,” you sob.
All that Sam can do is hold you. Dean hates you for what you did, and you don’t know if you two will ever be okay because of it.

Death Sworn
Ileni, from Leah Cypress’ Death Sworn, is a sorceress whose magic is fading. Her people, the Renegai, have a deal with a league of assassins—in exchange for teaching their young sorcery, they will be left alone. When two of the Renegai tutors die within a few weeks of one another, the Renegai elders suspect foul play and send Ileni, whom they deem expendable, to the assassin’s caves in order to buy them time and discover the truth—who is behind the tutors’ deaths. But no one expects her to succeed or to survive.
I was not a fan of Cypress’ novel for a few reasons. First, I felt as though it was filled with a series of bland, boring, one-dimensional characters who were uncomfortably similar to one another. At times, I felt as though I was reading a book filled with the same character in different forms. I also thought it strange that each character spoke in a similar fashion despite their having grown up in different places and despite their having different experiences. It just didn’t seem realistic to me. Second, I didn’t find the novel to be particularly engaging. Although it was fairly fast-paced, there was nothing to draw me into the novel—I didn’t feel drawn to any of the characters and could not become invested in them or their hardships. Overall, the novel failed to live up to my expectations and although it ended on a cliffhanger, I have no intention of continuing with the series.
Rating: 2.1/5 stars

i’m so stoked to do these because embry and seth are two of my favess so without further ado
Embry What they smell like: cedarwood. mmmm How they sleep (sleeping position, schedule, etc): boy loooooves his sleep. he’s the kind of guy who just keeps hitting the snooze button in the morning which sometimes makes him late for school. stomach or side sleeper What music they enjoy: any rock/alternative music. he plays guitar in his spare time sooo... besides that, sam has put him on to older, classic rock songs. his favorite band is the red hot chili peppers and that is not my opinion that is a FACT How much time they spend getting ready every morning: depends on how long he slept in LOL. but fr he cares about what he looks like because his mom taught him that first impressions matter so he usually takes time to look at least decent unless he’s going to patrol then he doesn’t really care Their favorite thing to collect: photographs. he’s secretly a soft and sentimental person and likes to have something to remember moments by whether they were big or small it’s all important to him. he loves the concept of being able to save a snapshot of a certain point in time forever Left or right-handed: right handed Religion (if any): tribal beliefs Favorite sport: he’s not huge into sports but he can enjoy football and soccer Favorite touristy thing to do when traveling (museums, local food, sightseeing, etc): he likes to go around taking pictures of all of the famous landmarks and other interesting things he sees. eating at popular local restaurants is another one of his faves. Favorite kind of weather: fall, when it’s just starting to get chilly A weird/obscure fear they have: clowns. he thinks they’re super creepy. will watch any scary movie except for ones with clowns The carnival/arcade game they always win without fail: anything that has to do with aim/accuracy, like balloon darts or the one where you have to throw baseballs at empty bottles.
Seth What they smell like: something citrusy like bergamot How they sleep (sleeping position, schedule, etc): curled up on his side. he has to tuck his lil feet under the blankets every time tho otherwise he can’t fall asleep. definitely related to that vine where the kid goes “hahaha, i do that” in reference to tucking his feet under the covers hfjbvkjdsncjhebf What music they enjoy: mostly top 40s kind of stuff - pop, pop rock, a little bit of hip hop and rap on occasion. i just see him loving marroon 5?? idk How much time they spend getting ready every morning: seth definitely spends more time than the other guys in the pack. mostly because he keeps trying to make his hair do the same thing paul’s does but it never works out as well as it does for paul Their favorite thing to collect: sea glass. he just thinks it’s neat. he used to make stuff out of it for leah when they were younger. Left or right-handed: right handed Religion (if any): tribal beliefs Favorite sport: baseball, soccer, football, basically every sport honestly Favorite touristy thing to do when traveling (museums, local food, sightseeing, etc): eat all of the trendy/crazy/over the top food he can find. giant milkshakes? yes. world’s largest bowl of ramen? sign him up. Favorite kind of weather: the time of year where it goes from spring to summer and everything feels fresh and new A weird/obscure fear they have: being trapped in small/confined spaces. this may or may not have to do with the fact that leah bet him that he wouldn’t fit into the washing machine as a child and he got stuck inside for a few hours. sue was not happy. The carnival/arcade game they always win without fail: the fish game. he always went home with a new fish friend that wouldn’t live more than a few weeks and he was always devastated when he had to watch it get flushed down the toilet
Quil What they smell like: woodsy like cypress How they sleep (sleeping position, schedule, etc): he tends to stay up super late but doesn’t get tired? like ever??? he can fall asleep in basically any position but on his back is easiest What music they enjoy: alternative and rock. him and embry share pretty much the same taste in music, although his favorite band is overwhelmingly green day. How much time they spend getting ready every morning: like no time at all. wears whatever the f he wants as long as it doesn’t seem dirty. obviously cares about basic hygiene but doesn’t try hard to impress people. thinks paul spends too much time on his hair and rags on him. Their favorite thing to collect: t-shirts... he will never run out of clean t-shirts. he has one for every concert he’s been too, every band he likes, every place he’s visited. Left or right-handed: right handed Religion (if any): tribal beliefs Favorite sport: honestly doesn’t give a shit about sports but he’ll kick around a soccer ball with the pack for fun Favorite touristy thing to do when traveling (museums, local food, sightseeing, etc): buy t-shirts lol. no but really he’ll go to every restaurant with embry and seth and stuff his face with yummy food Favorite kind of weather: summer A weird/obscure fear they have: i can see him being super afraid of heights and hating it when his friends want to go cliff diving The carnival/arcade game they always win without fail: he is TERRIBLE. at carnival games. he won’t play them. they frustrate him to no end
thank ya’ll come again :)

Even a single lucky human could slay a mighty dragon. As time passed into the modern era their weapons and technology made them even more deadly. - A.E. Lowen, Faerie Rising
Aight, y'all. I have a request.
One of the things I have to come up with when I'm writing RPG books are chapter quotes. The chapter quote comes at the head of a given chapter in a book and serves as a summary of the mood or contents of a chapter. Like this, from Trinity: Assassins -
I am pretty good at finding these, and often end up supplying quotes to coworkers as well, but! I want to extend and expand my collection of quotes and add in some lesser-known stuff, because it's my opportunity to shine a little light on people's good words.
A few requirements, because I gotta follow a style guide:
Must be from a published work with a title. Like, I don't want pithy quotes from a random Tumblr post, cool as they may be.
Must be attributable to a first and last name, not a username, so unless there's a first and last name on that AO3 story, please no.
Short and sweet. A sentence, maybe two. I can't use a whole paragraph.
No song quotes, period, full stop. I'm not allowed. Plays, books, poems, good. Songs, no.
What I'm specifically looking for are quotes on the following topics:
Spies or Assassins, James Bond, spy tropes
History, especially the manipulation of public opinion or history
Storytelling, the importance of stories, the stories we tell ourselves
Mythmaking, the concept of stories or roles being alive/having the ability to affect people and the world, tropes in fiction and reality
Cooperation or building things as a team
Gods, children of Gods, godhood, becoming divine,
fate or destiny but especially how much it sucks to be pushed around by Fate/destiny/Wyrd
Specific gods/mythic beings (especially Norse gods, but really any pantheon you can think of) and their antics
What we owe to each other, community-building, trust, safety through preparation
Multiverses, alternate realities, worlds outside the known world, liminal spaces
Dogs
Technology and magic, especially where they overlap or cannot be distinguished from each other, and our belief in both

If you have a cool quote you think I should keep in my quote vault for future use, and it isn't something coming from a Big Name Author*, please stick it in a reply or a reblog of this post with the attributon (name and title) for the quote. I'll be keeping this thread around for whenever I need to grab a chapter quote or give someone else ideas. Obviously, putting a quote on the post is no guarantee it'll get used by me or anyone else, but hopefully people will also check the notes for delightful bon mots which inspire them to check out the works in question.
Please keep the notes of this post relatively clean so it remains a good reference post. 💗
*for the purposes of this post, a Big Name Author is one your mom has probably at least heard of - Ernest Hemingway, Steven King, James Patterson, Neil Gaiman, etc. If the author has a Tumblr, they probably don't count as a Big Name. Spiders Neal is an outlier etc etc. Definitely would love more quotes from marginalized authors - it's easy to find a quote from a middle-aged white man on whatever concept - and from currently-writing authors. The point of this is to be able to give attention to awesome people who might sell an extra book or two from being quoted.
If you don't want to see me reblogging this with whatever cool-ass thing people have put on it this time, mute "chapter quotes post".

For the week of 30 April 2018
Quick Bits:
Avengers #1 represents the cyclical nature of comics. While the story continues on from Marvel Legacy and highlights themes of legacy heroes and returning hosts of Celestials, on a functional level it also represents a circling back to a kind of “status quo” of the Avengers big three. Similar to what happened during Marvel’s Heroic Age branding and Avengers Prime some eight or so years ago. Jason Aaron’s meta-commentary in the book, about the changes and return of the characters is certainly interesting.
That being said, it’s also a fun book. The art from Ed McGuinness, Mark Morales, and David Curiel is suitably bombastic. I particularly like the new designs for the Final Host, weird, but still within a similar enough Kirby aesthetic. It’s also nice to see the Million BC Avengers again.

Black Science #35 returns from its most recent break with a bit of a mindfuck. Kind of par for the course. Rick Remender basically gives us “Saving the Eververse through Couples Therapy” and it encapsulates one of the larger themes in the series of the problems with family, the mistakes made, and the lengths people go to in order to try to make things right. As usual, Matteo Scalera and Moreno Dinisio makes it look gorgeous. I think Scalera can probably make anything look visually interesting at this point.

Breathless #2 steps up the action, with Scout and Grace-Eisley trying to fight their way out of the labs, only to discover that the appearance of the drinkers hints to a deeper conspiracy. The story Pat Shand and Renzo Rodriguez is telling is fairly good. I like the use of flashbacks to flesh out Scout a wee bit more, and the art from Rodriguez and colourist Mara Jayne Carpenter, particularly some of the layouts and character designs, is quite impressive.

Captain America #701 starts Mark Waid’s end run on the series before it gets relaunched with Ta-Nehisi Coates guiding the ship. Again, Waid is playing with time and legacy here, with the story set in the 24th century, but with an eye to travelling through Cap’s history. It’s fairly captivating, with some great art by Leonardo Romero and Matthew Wilson on the main story and flashbacks from Adam Hughes and JG Jones & Paul Mounts.

Coda #1 is an incredible debut from Si Spurrier and Matías Bergara. The fantasy world that Spurrier and Bergara have created here feels rich, deep, and sorrowful. Living in a world where it seems like evil won, stripped magic and hope from existence, and most of those who remain live by a kind of brutal and bleak lawlessness. Or cling to what our protagonist, “Sir Hum”, would consider useless grasps at the world gone by. It reminds me a bit of The Last Unicorn mixed with Mad Max, and it’s wonderful. Spurrier’s dark humour shines through and Bergara’s art (with colour assists from Michael Doig) is stunning.

Come Into Me #2 hits a few technological, biological, ethical, and moral walls as they try to figure out how to excise a dead person’s mind from Sebastian’s body. Lonnie Nadler and Zac Thompson have something existentially frightening here, tapping into the kind of intellectual body horror that David Cronenberg is known for, beautifully illustrated by Piotr Kowalski and Niko Guardia.
| Published by Black Mask Studios
Dark Ark #6 begins a new arc, giving us flashbacks of Shae learning about Noah’s ark and the methods he uses to begin building his own. I like that Cullen Bunn is going back to fill us in on how the second ark came about.
| Published by AfterShock
Death or Glory #1 is a beautiful comic. Bengal’s art, from character designs, page layouts, vehicles, composition, colour choice, and more is just amazing. Visually, this is a feast. The story too is captivating. The Last Days of American Crime taught us that Rick Remender can write a mean crime story and the start of this one is really not to be missed. Glory Owens is an interesting character, her reasons for turning to crime understandable, and the world that Remender and Bengal are creating seems to be deep and fascinatingly populated.

Doctor Star and the Kingdom of Lost Tomorrows #3 continues this excellent look at the possible real world ramifications of a Ted Knight Starman analogue missing out on the life of his wife and child. Jeff Lemire excels at family dynamics and this series has just been one gut punch after another.
| Published by Dark Horse
GI Joe: A Real American Hero #251 begins a new arc of largely single issue stories focusing on an individual Joe or member of Cobra. This first part spotlights Stalker and has some great art from Alex Sanchez and Ronda Pattison.

The Gravediggers Union #6 revels in its glorious madness with an epic confrontation between the Black Temple and the Gravediggers Union for the fate of existence. Toby Cypress and Niko Guardia do a great job portraying the action and insanity of the battle.

Harbinger Wars 2 Prelude #1 is pretty epic, even just as set up. This issue serves as a sequel to Eric Heisserer, Raúl Allén, and Patricia Martín’s excellent Secret Weapons mini-series, as well as the massacre of the Generation Zero kids in Harbinger Renegade last year, and the titular prelude to Harbinger Wars 2. It’s good. The American government has basically gone insane and have taken to trying to kill every psiot on Earth, so Livewire does something drastic. It’s huge.

Hunt for Wolverine: Weapon Lost #1 is the first of the four mini-series with groups looking for Logan. It’s also the one with the most tenuous of reasons for existing, given that Kitty went to Daredevil because Multiple Man is dead (at least until the summer) and they don’t have any other detectives. Ignoring, of course, the whole load of psychics they could use, hunters and trackers like the Weapon X group, mutant trackers like Prestige and Caliban, Agent X, hell...even Deadpool. This is more just the group of people that Charles Soule wanted to write, even if the remit’s ridiculous. Regardless of the in-story or meta reason for coming together, this isn’t bad. Soule’s set up here is mostly a gathering of the group, giving us a look into the previous cop life of both Frank McGee and Misty Knight, before leading us to a welcome return of the final member of the team. It also looks damn good with art by Matteo Buffagni and Jim Charalampidis.

Infinity Countdown #3 advances the overall story a bit, giving us an underlying mystery as to characters coming to an understanding that reality has changed since Infinity. How, why, and what remain unknown, but it’s an interesting tidbit. Also, the conclusion of the battle over the power stone is absolutely ridiculous, it needs to be seen.

Koshchei the Deathless #5 details the twist in the tale where Koshchei became a slave to Baba Yaga. It’s interesting how Mike Mignola dovetails Koshchei’s story with events and characters through Hellboy and BPRD history. And how horrible Baba Yaga was in her thirst for revenge.
| Published by Dark Horse
Red Sonja/Tarzan #1 is likely to make a lot of people angry. Not because it’s bad, not because it’s controversial, or anything like that. It’s because Gail Simone has created a villain in Eson Duul, an arrogant bully and poacher, that is so despicable, so cruel, so heartless, that you’ll likely want to punch him yourself. It’s interesting to see both Red Sonja and Tarzan at such a disadvantage.
| Published by Dynamite
Rogue & Gambit #5 is only partially a conclusion to the series. Sure, Kelly Thompson brings to a close the bizarre mutant stealing couples retreat arc and gives a sense of closure and reconciliation in Rogue and Gambit’s relationship, but she leaves open the door for more. Especially with questions about the series’ villain, Lavish, left up in the air. I certainly hope to see this plot thread picked up on. Also, the art from Pere Pérez and Frank D’Armata is gorgeous.
| Published by Marvel
Scales & Scoundrels #9 is a largely silent issue with Lu coming across a man who’s lost his voice, a lonely siren, and a hunt for treasure at the bottom of the ocean. This issue’s storytelling rests largely upon Galaad’s ability to portray everything visually and it pays off in spades. The art is beautiful and story flows incredibly, with the silence adding a necessary depth to the fable that Galaad and Sebastian Girner are telling here. Great work. If you haven’t picked up this series before, this is a wonderful single issue story to jump in with.

Sherlock Holmes: The Vanishing Man #1 is off to a good start with a new mystery from Leah Moore and John Reppion. I really like Julius Ohta’s style. It’s somewhat similar to Cully Hamner and Adam Pollina and it adds to a pretty nice looking book.
| Published by Dynamite
Spawn #285 is another issue made so much more by the art from Jason Shawn Alexander and Lee Loughridge. The series has stepped back from the oblique horror with this arc with Todd McFarlane resuming writing duties, opting for the more familiar government and military conspiracies that have been part of the series since the beginning, but it’s entertaining.

Spider-Man #240 is the second-to-last stop on the Bendis Farewell Tour, but this one feels like the big goodbye. Partially because of the long heartfelt letter from Bendis at the end of the issue, reminiscing about his years of work on Ultimate Spider-Man and all of the wonderful people he collaborated with over the span. And because this really is the end of nearly two decades’ worth of work, first with Ultimate Peter and then with Miles Morales. This conclusion is more personal, evidenced largely due to the story structure itself, being an issue of reflection and recuperation.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Through the Mirror #1 continues on from the recent Mirror Broken series, bringing the main timeline crew into the mix. This issue is split into two stories, a lead one with art by Marcus To and Brittany Peer in the main timeline and a back-up in the mirror universe with art by J.K. Woodward. The art throughout is great.

Transformers vs. Visionaries #5 ends the series in a pretty spectacular fashion as plots and machinations come to fruition. Wonderful art from Fico Ossio and David Garcia Cruz. It’s just a shame that we won’t really be getting more of the Visionaries with the line ending soon, because Magdalene Visaggio gave us an interesting starting point here for a new wrinkle on Cybertron.
| Published by IDW
Venomized #5 brings Cullen Bunn’s Poison trilogy to an end in a rather interesting fashion that gets to spotlight the Monsters Unleashed monsters and give a bit of closure and justice for the original five X-Men who were pretty badly beaten up in the centre act. Iban Coello also really gets to cut loose on the art in this issue as well, elevating his work even higher than before with some of the sequences.
What this series unfortunately also highlights, like the new Avengers, is the current mishmash of timing with Marvel’s continuity. This has to be after the current X-Men Blue arc because the X-Men are back on Earth, but before the recent Mighty Thor arc because of Lady Thor, and...undoubtedly other things you could point out that would probably seem like nitpicking. It kind of feels like some things in the “Fresh Start” are necessitating things to be rushed in places. So, in terms of continuity, this is a bit of a mess.
Still, taken on its own terms, without trying to figure out how it works in the broader shared universe, this has been fun.
| Published by Marvel
Weapon X #17 begins the process of the characters wondering why this team still exists, as the status quo is shaken by Sabretooth taking lead of the team while Logan recovers from the last two issues’ birthday brawl. It feels like the beginning of the end, but Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente are still making the story fun.
| Published by Marvel
Other Highlights: Astonishing X-Men #11, Avengers: Back to Basics #5, Black Science #35, East of West #37, Giant Days #38, Go Go Power Rangers #9, Jazz Maynard #10, Maxwell’s Demons #3, October Faction: Supernatural Dreams #3, Red Sonja #15, Rick Veitch’s The One #3, Sex Criminals #24, Star Wars #47, Xerxes #2, You Are Deadpool #1
Recommended Collections: Archie - Volume 5, Reborn, Extremity - Volume 2, The Gravediggers Union - Volume 1, Scarlett’s Strike Force - Volume 1, She-Hulk - Volume 3: Jen Walters Must Die, Star Trek: Boldly Go - Volume 3, Stray Bullets: Sunshine & Roses - Volume 1, Young Terrorists

Thornwood by: Leah Cypress
A Sleeping Beauty story told from a perspective none of us have had before. I really enjoyed the writing and description. For me it opened well and I didn't have to force myself to keep reading. Briony, the overlooked, uncared about sibling. Two sister princesses.
While I did like it there are some issues with characterizations for me. Sometimes they were flat. And the younger sister had to fight for her agency. I understand that with her being the ignored party that's going to be a theme but for her to be treated the way she was, it was a bit tiring to read. Some things weren't adequately explained for me but all in all, it's a solid book for a little bit of escapism if you don't mind the flaws.
Thank you Netgalley and publisher for the ARC
