I just… the umbrella academy s4… (spoilers below) -- 4 things i didnt like, and 1 thing i did

like as someone who is a casual viewer and not super involved in the fandom up until this point, even I am like. Dumbfounded by wtv this season was…

five x lila / the stuck in the subway plot

common census shows that the Lila x Five thing was weird but I just think it’s such a shame that they both probably had so much shared resentment for their “upbringing” and the commission and that whole aspect of their friendship/relationship has completely been thrown away in lieu of them getting together

I don’t have a big gripe with five being gone for 7 years and only him knowing that (ie he was gone for 7 years but people think he’s been gone for a couple hours) bc I THOUGHT this would be a way to explain how Aidan (his actor) is no longer a child and doesnt look like a child any more -- but the show explained that by making s4 take place 6 years after s3. but now five should look 26 (13 y/o body in s1 + 6 year gap + extra 7 years in the subway)

... But there was no real reason (at least to me) for Lila to be with him imo

In honesty, i could see five falling for lila, not because i think he truly LOVES her, but because we have seen a similar pattern of behavior before... at a time where he is isolated and alone, he clung to a vaguely humanoid mannequin for comfort and connection. I can see five trying to lean (?) on lila to not lose his sense of self while he's physically lost again... that being said, i dont see why it HAD to be romantic because another aspect of Five's character is that he is EXTREMELY loyal. he literally went 45 years in the apocalypse, constantly trying to get back to his family. and once Five actually reunited with his family, tried to save them, etc. (as i said earlier, i am a casual fan - although i intend to rewatch s1 to erase wtv s4 was from my mind - so i cant pinpoint exact moments where Five bonded with his siblings post traveling back to them, but i know it happens!)

I just think that if five was alone, AGAIN, FOR YEARS, there could have been interesting parallels to his arc/main motivations in the first season — how no matter how long he was separated for, he wanted to get back to his family, to be with them, to save them…

there still could have been a part where he stops for a couple months because he’s so exhausted and has a crisis wondering if he’s meant to be alone, or why he always gets separated (even after finding the book home, he could take another 6 months in his crisis mode — btw the journal showing the way home makes no sense to me like I get that alternate timeline fives made it but how did they know to make a guide back to OUR five’s timeline or wtv)

2. ben's wasted potential

idk i thought there could have been more ben development. his relationship with his siblings.

the way i see it, (sparrow) ben might have wanted his powers back to feel powerful or to feel connected with his (dead) siblings again. he had trouble connecting with the umbrellas who are "close" and know him but he doesnt know them, making him feel isolated.

the show could have showed us how he bonded with the umbrellas, or just in general, not put him in jail for a ponzi scheme for 4/6 years, which FURTHER created a divide between them when they could have just shown subtle nuances about their new formed relationships.

(also have seen posts about ben dying as the monster he - umbrella ben - always thought he was! and like so true but also so painful for them to bring up like thats so... horrid)

3. the jennifer incident

didnt really understand it... like why was she in the squid? i dont understand why the showrunners would invest "time" (no matter how little they spent on it) into creating a whole plot point and character to give jennifer no character, no motivations, no nothing!

imo, they could have just done the "timelines are bleeding into one another" and just said that everything would be erased because every timeline would replace each other or create too much chaos (? if that makes sense), rather than marigold/durango stuff...

i just think it was such a disappointment for them to introduce a new character but not explain the many intricacies about her

i assume that jennifer was miraculously in the squid like the umbrellas/sparrows were miraculously birthed or wtv, but they dont explain why she was so willing to go with and trust ben immediately, or give her literally any motivations or emotions (?)... like she was seen to be protective and caring of her adoptive uncle, just to leave him for ben?? like if ben and jennifer had a connection because tentacle powers and squid girl -- why??!! it just... make it make sense please!

3a. reginald, ben and jennifer

i do think it was interesting for reginald to have 🔫 ben in the original timeline, but for aforementioned, issues with the lack of development on jennifer and the jennifer incident, it overall felt very lack luster

this aspect of the umbrellas and reginald's relationship was super interesting. the fact reginald was so willing and easily killed one of them, further highlights that reginald was just seeing them as a means to an end.

4. the ending

lowkey hated it... because the whole, "the team sacrificed themselves and everything is righted because we never would have existed" thing feels like such a cop out....

like a "it was all just a dream" ending

+1. Klaus being sober and attempting to keep that

like he was sober for 3 years (a huge accomplishment and im so proud of klaus), and despite everyone basically begging him to drink a sake bomb with them in ep 1, he throws it over his shoulder, maintaining his sobriety. even though klaus doesnt stay sober through the whole season, that scene was really nice to me. i remember watching it and hearing klaus say "it doesnt count" and my heart dropping so hard, for it to be revealed he didnt actually take it and make me feel better again.

...then he gets his powers back and feels like he needs substances to cope... which is trigger for him and a normal response.

i dont blame klaus, and while i dont particularly like how the show handled his sobriety and relapse (esp the positions it put klaus through in s4 with like no real impact on the plot, or klaus realising himself -- which there was a whole scenes about klaus being most powerful when he's sober with reginald in s2 i believe?), it was interesting to show how an addict and their actions can effect the people that care about them too (ie how claire reacts). i think they could have had a more nuanced approach, but overall, the initial attempt to stay sober was cool

i thought it was cool how klaus became a germaphobe/afraid of death(?) after being sober. because i thought it was a symbol of how klaus realised he is no longer immortal and can die now, so he becomes overly cautious, realising how he cannot keep living life the way he had. and this translates to his care of claire i thought, because he can no longer talk to the dead either :D

oooh im so glad u watched dbd! yeah so charles, in the comics, is canon bisexual. he's also, in the show, a teen boy who died in the 80s. which. the AIDS crisis. the first person to die of AIDS in england did so in 1981. take that, and then pair it up with his reaction to edwin's confession, particularly what he says.

hes not closing the door to edwin or this opportunity--what he is doing, is saying that they have the rest of forever to figure this out. he's not wrong. he just needs for the two of them to be able to reach that forever first, and to do that they need to run up the stairs and away from the doll spider demon.

i think, for charles, who is so devoted to edwin, and clearly loves him above all else, the answer he gave was perfect--he cant say hes in love with edwin back, so he doesnt. he cant say hes in love with edwin back, because he doesnt know! as a bi person, ill say this. in my experience, there have been a few times, where there have been moments of, i dont know yet. and obviously that is not everyone's experience, and im not even saying that is charles' experience! but he loves edwin so much, and he wants to figure out if he loves edwin in a romantic way too--and to do that, he needs to think about it, and again, he cant do that on a stairway to hell running from a demon. perhaps, its even more than that--perhaps, he wants to figure out if he can. has he thought about his sexuality before? has he ever been attracted to a boy before? has he ever consciously been? maybe these are things he needs to think about. he likes girls, check. maybe he likes boys too? he's a detective, he'll figure it out.

i do think that expecting a love confession reciprocation (which we did get, it was just not a romantic one, and even then, it wasnt shut down forever) right away, and then not getting it, was not necessarily bad thing. ultimately, dbd is a story, a tv show, there are characters and then there is development--there is build up. so to not get that confession, it makes sense storytelling wise. because we havent gotten to see charles come to terms with his sexuality, or even think much about it (consciously), beyond being attracted to crytsal. (and. all those longing yearning loving looks directed at edwin lbr) we get to see edwin come to terms with his sexuality in s1. he was repressing pretty hard and wasnt even aware he was in love with charles. so, in the hopes we get a s2, maybe we'll find ourselves with a charles having an oh moment scene. id kill for that

I would absolutely love to see this, and I know in the show the love confession wasn't explicitly a shutdown. However, based on Edwin's comments to Niko that "it made us better friends"/that Charles didn't feel the same, and also based on comments from the showrunners about how they wanted to focus on the platonic friendship between them, I am not so optimistic.

In the case that it does happen, I'm frankly not looking forward to a several-season love triangle between Crystal, Edwin and Charles. Of course, I understand Charles not reciprocating Edwin's feelings immediately (and especially not in that setting). However, I really don't care for his romance with Crystal because I feel they have no chemistry. It annoyed me that Charles pretty much put the whole thing out of his mind afterwards and went back to wanting to be with Crystal for no real reason other than she's a girl who was a good friend to him. I understand that TV shows work like this, but I'm tired of love triangles in general. If Charles and Edwin don't get together (or at least Charles doesn't address Edwin's confession in some manner) in season 2 I probably won't be watching it. I've seen too many teen shows drag on with unnecessary romance drama between people who have no chemistry, and I don't want another one to add to the list.

one final character analysis of silver spoon

ah, we’ve reached the end. 6 months ago, i posted the first, 5 months ago the second, and i think i finally want to delve into his final bits of character development in the finale. as always, ignore how jumbled my thoughts are, i write as it comes to me.

i made a lot of predictions for the finale, but unfortunately none of it came true. i expected candle to flat out die after iii18. i saw the reference to s1 and mephone being unable to save bow because he died when she did as foreshadowing for smth similar happening to candle, since mephone was debilitated. i also backed up my theory with the idea that candle activating her inner flame left her outer flame very vulnerable, since it seems to grow brighter when she uses her power. tldr, like her inner flame was on the outside. strangely, silver straight up murdering candle wasn’t brought up AT ALL. she was recovered offscreen. such an odd decision by the writers.

silver’s inner flame is eluded to in iii16 and fully realized in 17-18. as i mentioned in my earlier posts, the inner flame is an allegory for the soul. like candle, somebody who is very in touch with themselves and their surroundings can access their inner flame and use it for some kind of power boost + flight and telekinesis. not sure if that’s all it can do, but that’s everything we’ve seen candle or silver do with it. (candle’s ability to see the future and predict a teammate’s betrayal might also be related to the inner flame, but i’m not sure) as silver, with candle’s help, learns about himself and becomes more in tune with what he wants he unlocks this power. when he shows this power off at the final vote to gain support, candle is reasonably upset. “[the inner flame] isn’t some party trick to be strewn about to boost your own disgustly self-inflated ego.”

silver rejects cabby’s attempt to comfort him right after this and says he doesn’t need her vote if he can gain enough votes from the others. he’s regressed, and candle sees that. she saw it in him the moment he used his power to make himself look better in front of the voters. even though silver put on a brave face, we know he cares about candle more than himself. when he attacks her, he has a few lines about how everything he’d done was because he trusted she believed in him. another voice whispers over everything he says that only gets louder right before he kills her. his own arrogance leads to his downfall again. he finally felt like he’d gotten control—which he says himself—after a game of either being constantly undermined or doing anything candle says to please her, because he doesn’t trust himself.

he realizes that despite how much he has grown, he still has a long road ahead of him. his blindness to that leads to him hurting the people he holds dearest. he learns from his mistakes and doesn’t try to use the inner flame again, but a lot of the damage is done. candle is dead, and thats how it should’ve stayed, in my opinion. she’s used as a plot device to push silver’s story arc most of the time, so permanently getting rid of her forces silver to learn to grow and change on his own, like when she was eliminated. on the topic of that, i also think springy shouldve died for good too.

a bit shorter than my other analysis posts, but i did most of the heavy lifting in those last ones. them not showing silver and candle in the library was an absolute crime against nature. i still think blueberry getting immediately eliminated was a terrible writing decision. the show is quite flawed, but the characterization and community keeps me sticking around. cant wait to see whats next on inanimate insanity. hopefully taco gets her redemption arc or whatever they plan on doing, theyve got a lot to wrap up in 4 or so episodes.

something i've noticed about the difference between good omens and doctor who fandoms rn is that the good omens people are either making funny art or coming up with increasingly unfeasible theories about supposed 'hidden messages' in the show and generally being weird about it going out of their way to say they LOVE EVERYTHING about the show, and the doctor who people are like. damn this sucks.. unfortunately it's also really compelling. oh well <3

like idk the good omens people (generalising here of course) seem incredibly strung up on what Could Be Meaningful and making wayyyyy to much of a big deal out of minor details. and like the show is clever! there are secondary levels of meaning! but not everything is or should be. not everything is a metaphor. continuity errors exist. and the doctor who people (even new fans) are still yknow eating drywall over it but are also like HAHAHAHthat bit was awful. anyways its also incredibly thematically relevant to these other episodes so it's very important you watch it lol.

and i think the difference is that good omens is twelve episodes. just twelve. there's the book of course, which is a different angle than the show, there's the radio version etc. but there's only so much story. and a lot of the version are the plot of the book in different formats. whereas doctor who goes on forever and ever and ever and there will always be more content. so the good omens people are overanalysing the same few moments over and over again because thats all there is, they probably know their content better than the doctor who people, but b/c you only see them in so many Situations, its also easier to begin to warp your perception of them. you only see them deal with a crisis a couple times under very specific circumstances. there are only so many character moments, so things can be blown out of proportion b/c you cant compare it to another similar moment.

but doctor who is infamously long and infamously has a Very large eu so you have a lot more time with the characters to pull together your perception of the characters, even when regenerations and new companions come and go. you simply have more to work with to build your understanding.

like if you compare the 'i just lost my best friend' scene from good omens to any of the 'doctor thinks companion is dead' scenes--crowley reacts like that only once. he is distraught, obviously, doesnt quite know what to do about it at first, doesnt know what's happened to aziraphale--but its a specific moment. bookshop burned down. world is ending. aziraphale Gone. whereas doctor who there's a range of scenarios with a range of reactions--guilt and also hope when bill gets shot and then taken away. anger and denial over clara willingly dying knowing that she must (actually resolved her character arc quite well i thought, though so did hell bent). there are more but i forget. uhm end of s1 second to last episode rose gets vaporised but it's actually a teleport, the way nine responds to that. there's just more to work with!! which i think is why the good omens fandom is so deeply embroiled in arguing over minutiae of character and background detail b/c they dont have anything more to read about them except fanfics (which are obvious a feedback loop in any fandom) and because they only see aziraphale and crowley for such a short time. they cant compare their reactions during times of The Literal End of the World and The Disruption Of Their Quite Nice Life Together And Also Possibly the End of the World to them just chilling.

In the games SotN is Alu being forced to awaken and confront his lineage alone! It's him trading words w his dad and facing him directly

Meanwhile in nfcv: N!Alucard is biased towards his vampire legacy, he is the one to handle the fight and deal the finishing blow to N!Dracula (and stealing what should have been Trey's moment bc useless belmonts amiright) and later when his dad and mom are revived they just. Dont tell him shit and fuck off alone. And he didnt even sleep he just went around killing vampires.

What im trying to say is that the pivotal moments and circumstances that lead to SotN are gone in nfcv. Like why should i care that Alu fights some rando vamp leader? Even if its Drac somehow, this is the Drac that went to live away w his wife and completely forgot abt him and that Alu could have visited at anytime. They already threw SotN elements into the story without regards for the timeline

Meanwhile SotN Alu is grappling w being in the future, with his friends dead, completely convinced that his dad doesnt loves him while Drac is desperate to keep his dear son with him even if he has to cleave his human side with his bare hands. Its a vry tense and raw family relationship that they cant recreate now

It's what I said here: the lore changes in NFCV completely destroyed any chance of the showverse having anything remotely similar to the gameverse. It's such a divergent AU that it became its own thing.

As of now, Nocturne has yet to answer its biggest unanswered question: what did Dracula do in the past three centuries? He ignored his son, probably spent some decades travelling and having kinky sex with Lisa, and then he saw her die of natural causes. What then? His castle has become Alucard's home. Did he... find himself another castle? Did he revert to the hermit he was pre-S1? Did he become a nomad?? Annette doesn't know about him, so I suppose he lived in obscurity. He wasn't even interested in Sun Thundercat's plan, no one mentioned him, he didn't peek to see what the hell was going on in France like Olrox did! Where the hell is he???

And speaking of! We know that Aluc, instead of sealing himself away, stayed around and fought vampires (which means good jorb to you too for killing vampires for centuries and having them still becoming the ruling class), and possibly witnessed the death of his "friends". Now that I think about it, didn't the OG show end with Trevor, Sypha, Alucard and Greta all living together in the new village? I would assume Alucard became something of an honorary uncle to the Trepha kid. But now Richter doesn't know who he is? Did he peace out when Trevor and Sypha died, leaving the Belmont bloodline be?

Anyway, yeah, it is literally impossible to even attempt to recreate the SoTN story. We lack the entirety of the context, we lack the main villain, we lack Richter's and Alucard's intertwined legacy. Which is what makes me think that they won't even try. After all, this supposed adaptation of RoB has more in common with fucking Bloodlines of all games, plus the superfluous backdrop of the French Revolution. They shattered the lore so thoroughly that now they're basically forced to write an AU fanfiction, something on the same level as a high school AU of old.

Remove the whip, and you would never tell Nocturne is supposed to be tied to the Castlevania franchise - hell to the original cartoon.

Not the best thing to be comparing it to since they're on completely different levels but I cant help it.

Ok so, when I finished Attack on Titan, I remember sitting there just like... staring at the window ahead of me and just thinking to myself "what can I possibly watch now that wont feel insanely mediocre in comparison?"

Truly. It was akin to a feeling of a breakup but with someone so perfect you think "well that's it, nobody can compare to that, no point in even looking"

Osomatsu was the best thing for me to get back to first. For various reasons. And it worked. It helped. It took my mind off of SnK, even if I kept thinking about it here and there. And then I watched 91 Days and Acca and was able to appreciate them for what they were, but SnK changed a lot for me. Because I had never seen it done before.

There's some that say otherwise and that someone with my viewpoint is wrong, but I really and truly felt like the creator of SnK had every second of that story planned. And I could pull up various moments in the show that made no sense when you watched them in s1, only to have that answered in s3 or s4, and its like, "ok if he didn't have that planned, and it was 10 years later that we saw the answer, why would it have been in s1 in the first place." I want to get into that in a different post. But lets just say, SnK is what the show Lost could have been. But they defo didn't know where they were going with that and pulled a damn plot out of a hat and an ending out of another hat and went along with it, and it is widely regarded as the show that could have been the greatest TV show ever made (and then Game of Thrones did the same thing lol).

While watching Maou-sama, I watched it the same way I watched 91 Days and Acca. I watched it for what it was. None of them are SnK. They're just animes. Fun animes. And they were my top rated. I'd given them all an 8 (Maou had a 9 but I brought it down).

But with Maou-- Like SnK, it also happened to feature something I'd never seen before. And that is that is it the most wasted potential I have ever seen.

I don't remember being this disappointed. This would have been the exact type of show in which you should have had your whole story planned out, just like SnK. Definitely not on the grand, epic scale. But you don't have to be of the same genre to put your all into your story. Your very best. Your goddamn heart.

Some animes go a little bit downhill. Some animes start off medicore and get better.

But to have the premise that Maou-sama did and go in such a route that turned it into the most basic, run of the mill, generic anime that could easily blend in with thousands of others... Absolutely crazy to me.

And everyone is in agreement on it. I felt this way and then looked at the comment sections and its very much accepted that the creator got to a point where he stopped giving a shit. And that's so sad.

I wish he'd just been like "here, I got this far. I gave it my all to a point, so please continue cause I actually don't know what to do from here on out" and just handed it to someone else.

But anyway. I watched Maou-sama 10 years ago.

S2 part 1 came out in 2022 and S2 part 2 came out in 2023 (idk why it wasn't just S2 and S3). The anime ended in the most basic manner.

So, instead of waiting for a S3, I'm gonna read the manga and finish it off, bc I'm so disappointed I really couldn't be bothered, and wanna get this outta the way so I dont have to look at it again. And there's only 10 chapters left (idk how they'll make a whole season outta that).

Eleven might think mike was lying in his declaration and he might have been (because he can only remember the meeting with her at that point and he even forgot meeting will in the swings so he literally only remembers his life from the moment he met el? As if his life literally started there because what came before was taken?) and is it possible that she also doesn't remember memories with him so she had nothing to remember during his speech? He had nothing to say except his feelings that might or might not be true but because he had few memories available to him, he had to make the most of what he had and he had nothing (and perhaps a declaration of platonic love that he was sure she wouldn't want right now). As for El, as much as she was upset, nothing came to her mind?? Her first friend? Maybe she was that upset, understandable, but also maybe she had memories taken as well?? Did she manage to keep all of them somehow or did she also lose them? She did have a bunch of secret memories brenner had to trauma induce out of her

And idk how this factors into this but lucas told Max she didn't disappear he just didn't look hard enough, like, maybe those memories are in fact available but only if you look as hard as Lucas did, and them being related to traumatic things, even if they are good, perhaps they don't want to look, like El? Max's memories were still all there once everyone called for her during her first battle against vecna after all even if she was a target, but I hardly think Will would want to think about Lonnie even if it's necessary to remember his brother coming to reassure him that he will always be loved, or Mike might not want to remember life before El because right before that Will disappeared, even if he needs to remember that to remember meeting Will.

Also if vecna takes always all of Will's "safety" memories, Will still feels he can keep fighting because he loves mike, in his own words, can vecna actually hide not only memories but LOVE??? He can't erase the painting, for example. He can destroy it, like max's drawing, but it was real and lucas remade it. If vecna cant deal with love he might just kill mike instead though. Althought EVEN SO. Does death stop someone from loving another? No that does not. so what's his plan here? If he needs will he will have to hide love itself or erase every conection will has to happiness and love, so maybe he will just erase mike?

i started writing this benrius coleadership analysis a month ago and i finally deem it finished after weeks of not looking at it it so here we go

So as we all know their arcs in s1 start of completely on opposite ends. ben is less than psyched to be there while this is darius’ dream. however ben ends up stepping up during the train moment inspired by darius. they go through their struggles in s2; darius w leadership and ben w himself/survival. beginning of s3 they get brought together and are shown sadness leaving jurassic world because of their individual connection to it: darius w his dad through dinosaurs, and ben’s connection to himself through bumpy/island.

s3 has darius fighting to keep ben by their side bc he cant lose ben again bc that’s threatening his promise that he made to get everyone out safely. meanwhile darius’ attempts to do so threaten ben’s own selfhood. their interests are at a standstill both wanting to do what’s best for ben and having different ideas of such. bc of ben’s specific past that darius still feels guilt for is why he’s so unwilling to let ben go again, that much is obvious. ben is the only one able to absolve darius of the guilt in a deeper conversation than the one we got at their reunion, reassuring that he doesn’t blame darius and loves darius. Now that’s important bc even though the others have tried to remind darius that he’s not at fault for ben this was the only one that was able to get through to him fully. brooklynn did remind darius in s2 and sure; bc its ben himself that he’s able to say “i’m the person you dropped and i’m telling you it’s not your fault” but ben makes sure to not only absolve him of that guilt but to remind darius of his doings and how he’s always tried to protect him—to protect everyone (He’s branching out from his specific instance) they couldve stopped there but we got the “I love you bud” which! the bud is important so i don’t want to take it out of context but i just find it so prominent that ben decides to tell him That instead of a “you’re amazing” like. it’s coming from ben’s feelings. “quite a pair” from darius like theyre partners on equal ground (which they are! co-leaders.) anyways.

through the seasons we get shoulder touching. lots of it. it means reassurance from darius, worry from ben in s1; but in s3 the Amount of reassuring shoulder touches we get. they begin to be able to communicate support through this without words. while i did talk abt their arcs entwining from s1, s3 really shows the equal level they get to be on by being able to comfort one another. the thing that differentiates them from the other campers is ben being the cause of darius’ guilt which means he’s the only one able to help darius w that specifically. having ben there is its own comfort. darius feeling down after the historical jurassic park structure was destroyed was pleasantly surprised by a ben comfort shoulder touch. this doesn’t stop in s4; after ben’s speech, ben isn’t sure if it worked and while darius is going through his own disappointment, he takes the time to give some reassurance to ben. even when darius doesn’t know what to say after they think brooklynn and kenji are gone (and ben pulls away, knowing there’s nothing to say. damn his self blame. will get into that in a moment) there’s an attempt. after darius’ love for dinos cause them to miss the plane again, ben touches his shoulder to tell him non-verbally “hey. nothing can be said rn” and as this post explained so well, gives the other campers space from darius. i am willing to bet a convo takes place on the walk there with ben trying to absolve darius of guilt of “holding everyone back” (sound familiar? ben being tired of holding everyone back in s1) despite it being the right thing. ben can understand darius bc of their connections to dinosaurs thats one big similarity of their arcs and why they work so well together along w how darius has dino knowledge and ben w island knowledge. both of them shielding others behind them w their arms at one point showing their inherent need to protect others bc of this advantage of knowledge they have

the traits they inherit from each other in s4 broadcasted so obviously like. ben’s attempts to lighten everyone’s mood with a plan of action (bc darius for once is not coming up w it. Sign one of shared leadership). ben’s “it’s all my fault” self blame taken from darius i see….bc hes the one who made the plan this time, and darius HAS to understand that when plans fail and people are put at risk the crushing guilt that falls upon him. the moment he steps up he feels like he messes things up. however even before this they both tried to do their parts to keep the group running smoothly, most noticeable during the brooklyn/sammy tension where they both try and dismantle it in their own way (sure ben more because of them being loud but. hey i’ll take it) ben goes through a bit of a leadership arc trying to get darius out of kash’s clutches coming up w another plan that nearly fails but doesnt and he gets darius back! wooo reward. i could talk about his reaction compared to the others when talking abt darius’ potential danger and how worried he was that entire arc but i’m gonna save that for the season compilation post

meanwhile the short arc of darius having to choose between dinosaurs and his friends was done excellently (in how it was introduced not how it was…executed). his need to do the overall right thing vs saving his friends…im proud of him for that. even if the season shouldve given him space to explore his feelings and mental state. but Anyways that must’ve created some sort of cognitive dissonance with his self much like what ben had to go through in season 2. i wish we could’ve seen more of his struggle w choosing one over the other…but his little persona he put on was 100% inspired by ben’s with the “i survived all alone and i am amazing for it” aura. not to mention ben single dad w firecracker and darius just. smiling at him???? he wasn’t even there for ben’s struggle w connecting w the dino, although he was in s3 where ben decided isolation was the way to go so he’s probably like Woo my boy is reaching out!! maybe ben confided in darius about missing bumpy and he just automatically got what was going on. or he’s just gay yeah that could be it. and then ben’s little attempts to impress darius where he says the most cheesy line ever and gets all flustered when darius isn’t impressed i was like Ayo whats goin on

just ben’s admiration for darius i really hope that gets addressed because the leadership bit of ben coming up with the plan—they were already coming up w plans together back in s3: to blow up something as a distraction, to defeat scorpius rex (where ben overrode darius’ “IM going to stop then” with “what are WE gonna do”), to save brooklynn (“if your plan turns out as good as this model, we’re in great shape” go co leadership!!!) and had their little meeting upstairs as the files were being copied, and s4 ben telling darius to listen up, then being like “Darius is already on board. Everyone else ready” like darius agreeing is the only thing that matters which to be fair that is the main leader. but it was rly nice to see him falling into this role in darius’ absence. honestly i somehow forgot brooklynn’s short bit of leadership at the time when i wrote this so i think it’s unfair to not acknowledge it. both ben and brooklynn are darius’ right hand ppl but this post is more focused on ben’s role. at the beginning of the season we see darius communicating w ben like they’re already partners, telling him his solo task to pack the food up while they were stalking the compy and then relying on ben to distract it with berries

i’m just really excited to see where s5 takes them because i really do love both of them as characters and their dynamic together bc they just complement each other so well. i want to see more of darius’ emotions and how he/others deal with them. i want to see ben’s emotions and how he acts while finding himself in the new situation. i want to see them comforting each other bc they know how to and figuring out plans together. they’re just so interesting to me bc of how they started w the guilt and how their personalities reflect and work off one another and i hope i can explore that accurately in my writings.

Miraculous Rant

Actually, you know what, while im still mad from the previous post I made, lets go off on a rant. No punches pulled. Lets do this.

The lovesquare is the most terrible ship in this fandom. One girl is a hyper obsessed stalker who tracks her crush with her planner for 3 whole seasons, while the boy couldn’t learn to take a hint and stop flirting for 3 whole seasons until he decided to move on with another girl. Ironically that makes them perfect for eachother, but its in a creepy kind of way, not a loving kind of way.

Adrigami and Lukanette in the S3 Finale were wasted events and never should have occured because they were immediately axed in the first few episodes of the next season. I feel sorry for those that were hoping their ships could be real for at least a short actual while, and it makes me want to curse the writers for their story-boner for the status quo of teases

Despite what I said earlier, none of the girls are good for Adrien. Marinette’s stalkery and a borderline yandere, Kagami’s somewhat controlling and too similar to Adrien help him grow as a person, Chloe is a queen bee beyotch and honestly too much like a sibling to Adrien, and Lila is garbage. Fuck it, have Luka date Adrien and they can play some sweet music together (not like that you pervs, I meant they both play instruments).

Nino needs more love. Not only that, but there needs to be more Adrien/Nino bro moments. If Marinette and Alya can have moments together, why not the bros?

Chloe’s character is a mess, and is neither redeemable, nor notably evil. Her role as a villain in season 1 is very hamfisted, such as in the episodes Mr Pigeon and Kung Food. Not only that, Chloe also lacks any of the qualities that makes a good “bully villain” or rival to Marinette, and her sympathetic moments (which are Written by Sebastien) are mostly overshadowed by the fact that Astruc wants her to be a bully, so it just makes her bipolar and confusing when her character is tugged between two writers.

Chloe should not have joined Hawkmoth in Miracle Queen, see my other post as to why I think so. TLDR, its kinda ooc  for her to go full on 2d villain like Hawkmoth especially after Miraculer, plus Lila was being build up to be the main antagonist of S3

Chloe got kicked from the Team in Miraculer because people know her identity? Fine. Kagami gets to be Ryuko again despite being known to Hawkmoth in Ikari Gozen? Not cool. Ladybug shouldn’t be a hypocrite and be willing to break her own rules just because “Kagami is my friend and Chloe’s not”. Same goes for her breaking the rule with secrect identities with Alya, only for her to go on and on about the rules to Chat when he pries.

Zoe is a bland character who’s only notable trait that she likes Marinette, which automatically makes her worthy of a miraculous after two episodes and no actual development.

Astruc is a petty frick who makes episodes that give the finger to fans of the show that have a different opinion than him. Queen Banana, Miracle Queen, and Reverser are good examples of this (Reverser did Nathaniel dirty).

Master Fu is a shit guardian. Read my post for more.

FRICK THE FEAST EPISODE. Not only did is ruin Fu as character, it ruined all the good theories as to why the order fell, and wasted the idea of a new villain being introduced or even taking over as the main antagonist! Speaking of Feast, despite the sentimonster destroying an order when he wasn’t even big, he still go beat by 2 kids even when he was supersized!

Marinette is not a good Guardian. Her ability to choose heroes does not make her capable, and just because “tradition is stupid” doesnt mean that Marinette shouldn’t be tested like others before her!

Despite the Kwami’s being ancient magical buildings, they seem to act like kids a lot, and that annoys me when in S1 they are supposed to apparently be mentors to their wielders, like how Tikki was before she was mentally de-aged.

Lila is trash and should be removed from the show. The only reasons her lies work is because the writers dumb down every other character in the show and ignore the fact the people have smartphones with google.

The “Miraculous” Ladybug spell should require both Ladybug and Chat Noir to cast, because not only does the power have nothing to do with creation, but it also “destroys” anything created by the akuma, which thematically makes no sense. Also it would place more emphasis on the two heroes being equals and “two halfs of the same coin”

On that note, Ladybug has too many powers. Not only is she the only one who can purify akumas, and can cast a spell that can fix Paris time and time again like its no one’s buisness, but she also now gets a new suit and the ability to nullify Hawkmoth’s akumas. Like COME ON! Give Chat some powers too.

Mayura’s feather’s shouldnt be able to be purified by Ladybug since they have no dark energy, and (thematically speaking) Chat should be given an ability that allows him to “vanquish” the energy in Mayura[’s feathers similar to how Ladybug can purify Hawkmoth’s akumas. At least it would develop a rivalry between Chat and Mayura, and would make Chat necassary against Shadowmoth rather than being replacable with any other hero.

The are too many temporary heroes. They should have just stuck with the 3 heroes from s2 and leave it at that. Sure, new heroes were cool, but the overuse has made the whole hero thing feel less special. It made sense for the first 3 to have them, but now it’s just like Oprah where everyone gets a miraculous. Except Gabe.

Chat Blanc was a stupid reason as to why secret identities cant be revealed, also Chat could have told LB who Hawkmoth once he returned back to normal was and the show would be over.

Hawkmoth should not be Gabriel. Frick the lore about Gabriel’s wife dying and him going evil to get her back, it makes the story feel too much like a star wars/Darth vader reference and leaves Gabriel acting bipolar, flipping from wanting to save his wife and doing this out of necessity to being a power hungry madman wanting to take over the world ( which is said in his canon music video). Having Hawkmoth be his own character means he can be an actual maniac who wants world domination and not just have villanous plot that rely on obtaining magical jewellery (perhaps doing other evil things/taking a more active role), while Gabriel being his own character means he can be a father that has become estranged from his son due to the lose of his S,O, and thus can have a plot about him reuniting with his son (I liked the end seen in Simon says, ok?)

On that same note, I think Mayura shouldn’t have been Nathalie. Considering Hawkmoth’s plans were repetitive as heck for most of the show, when I heard about the Mayura leaks back in Season 2 (when she was called “le Paon”) I was theorising that Mayura would actually being Hawkmoth’s boss, the villain the was responsible for giving him his Miraculous and the one who destroyed the Order of the Miraculous, and would take over as the main villain in season 3 due to Hawkmoth’s failures. However, that turned out not to be the case.

Not only that, but Mayuras power is a copy paste power with some modifications to make it complement Hawkmoth’s power, by basically giving his akuma’s magic pokemon.

Speaking of Hawkmoth’s power, for a miraculous that is supposed to be used for good, how can his power mind control people and make them become evil? More importantly, for a miraculous that is supposedly weaker than the main heroes of the show, having it be able to multiply and posses people to create an army is kinda strong.

Fuck the Maribat ship that the salt fandom came up with. Its trash, it was made to bash most of the Miraculous cast sans Marinette, and anyone thinks it is good are either those same salters or are the same people who think that Rey-lo and the Twilight Saga are masterpieces of romance.

FIRSTLY: there's some odd moments, huh, where its like. its never HORRIFIC but the "gore" for lack of a better term really pushes whatever the rating is on this show, LOL.... like the hand melting scene in last ep? & crichtons head freaking exploding in outer space in this ep? yeessshhh....

also also also. i see that this ep im on rn (dream a little dream) isnt a zhaan ep but as an aside. its sooo strange bc i love zhaan as a character but SIGHHHH. i noticed that zhaan-focussed eps, thus far, fall sooo flat and thats such a freaking shame!! i feel like they sorta dont know how to deal with her as the focus and they go too hard in the wrong direction. but anyways

and also they do make some odd decisions with her otherwise, even still. not ones im wholly against but... i feel like they sometimes dont pull them off well. and i say that bc usually its, like, with her - whereas with everyone else, i feel like they consistently nail and get right, even if the episode is weaker. its odd. maybe im just misreading her sometimes, or what. but again its a shame bc i rlly like her. and they do do GOOD stuff with her too, ofc- i love the subtleties they pull off with her sometimes- but sometimes im like man what like...

although that being said ido like that this ep did take the time to kinda. explore exactly what she went through in that interim period between s1 and s2 and i DO think, saving it for now, rather than doing it right at the beginning was the right choice. her being imprisoned and put to execution makes her state a lot more understandable. though i willsay- kinda obvious how like.... they were SCRAPING for a way to put this in here lol. its kind of weird to frame it with the nightmare thing but eh its functional and her talk with crichton is nice enough

ALSO i actually reallylove chiana and rygels dynamic and i DID enjoy seeing them in this ep, and i did enjoy bits of this ep BUT theresother aspects.... MY BRAIN is failingtonight so im struggling to put it into words. like a lot of this, like quite a few s2 eps, didnt quite work out for me...

i think courtroom episodes in scifi shows can be cool when theyre done right and cleverly, and really do explore themes of morality, but i cant really say that of this episode. i think chiana and rygel do make a good team but a lot of it is a bit weird and not in the fun goofy farscape weird but like just kinda like... pulled out your ass, weird? like the stick thing and stuff. i think they should have pushed some parts a lot more than they did, and focussed on the wrong bits elsewhere- but even then, i still dont know, bc...

i feel like this episode sort of lost its point in general bc im skimming through trivia on it and it looks like this script was kinda moved about a bit and that shows and thats a shame bc i think. like when this STARTED i assumed it would be a zhaan ep and i think that it really... should have been? like-

DONT GET ME WRONG like i said it was fun and i liked the rygel and chiana dynamic. i think: a) rygel and chiana are alone and have to work together without the team; b) rygel and chiana have to play lawyers and cant use their usual skillet... is a solid story BUT wlike i dont know like. i feel like if youre going to flashback like this and have zhaan introduce and conclude the episode it would have worked better as an exploration of her, and for it to be her narrative rather than that. and then i think that would work better if we focussed more on the injustices of the planet rather than, like, courtroom drama bc they also lost sight of those, too, ro at least they werent rlly developed fully either . i think those two themes would have been stronger to go into for this setup and rygel and chiana antics tabled for another time

im sorry but otis and maeve exacerbate the goodness and badness both in each other and this makes them special and more connected with their glimpses, gestures and inability to stay away for longer. unless ur telling me there are other superior ships too but the ending of s3 ep7 was so so special. Otis and Maeve's ending lines in the rain scene is pretty PRETTY indicative of who at least should be with whom, when its always been them in each others mind. Now idk what would writers do or make of it in s4 and cliffhanger like ending, but all love interests added were poorly added and gave us false hope for both characs to be with someone else like isaac/ruby thing, however the entire thing as eric says too, "happened bcs of otis and maeve coming together with special diff traits and bonds to form the best clinic that offers pretty feasible and amateur like opinions which in turn polished otis' skills of helping people more and also for maeve who was already pretty smart and bright ahead of her times, in her speech and tastes" and this was entire reason and beginning of the best season which led to clinical education, awareness for teenagers while otis and maeve also navigate through each others lives and troubles and love and ways of communicating since both have a different way of communicating and both adhere to each other and also give each other space more, (or maybe bcs i do prefer that ship more than others, im just so hyped at every scene and moment). However the best moment for me wasn't the bus scene kiss moment in france but when otis and maeve were both kicked out of sexed class for open and different opinions against or anti to whatever prude and harsh concepts Hope was instilling in people, a lot of ppl and characters owned up to their sexuality and rebelled but Otis and Maeve rejecting the idea and challenging and arguing but then also being kicked out of class is very special moment and a parallel between them that so many perhaps don't notice, It also tells how differently in choices, they are so connected in thoughts, Maeve never shrugged off otis and he doesn't bother her only and until they both knew they couldn't really stay away and he made an effort even after f_cking up to stay in his life, and apologized and competed rather foolishly with isaac but all this bottled down again to ruby and isaac just used for story development and then removed from scenes but in a way i think, it is best for them since otis and maeve are both confused about each other & overall relationships, i think they both would take things v slowly and they are that kind of patient couple if they are a couple.....which i cant see hope of. It all actually just started from them too, which led to graffitis and sexual topics to be embraced and accepted more, bcs idk if someone also noticed how otis has so much of jean in him, and even if he is embarrassed by his mother sometimes, the genes just reflect in him. He is good at articulating and smooth and i think maeve picks it up quickly, they don't even guess when they are together, and they both have innate desire to help ppl esp maeve under that hard rock shell of an exterior, she is the most selfless and forgiving person, maybe too much, and lets go of a lot of stuff, always looks forward to future and is quite pragmatic even but in sense of otis, they both are always inexplicably drawn and held together to each other by some bitter false or sweet ripe memory of their previous days and its so funny or adorable to see them actually cling foolishly to their past encounter messages, moments, talks, and dreams/jokes of having a clinic. We see eric as bestfriend of Otis rooting for them too, and so does Aimee (which is weak evidence or parallel since writers are putting hints like this always but it is always jeopardized somehow in the end too so im not hoping or keeping too high hopes on anything).

The rain moment in s3ep7 is the most heart-warming because maeve now doesn't push otis back and neither does she falls back on isaac somehow, and she welcomes his opinion again, only this time they actually confess in pretty open words & expressions which is more meaningful and rigorous and sparkling than the RainmomentInFrance which i think was, meaningless or maybe just a way to bring them close together.

You cannot tell me this is excellent dialogue exchange and yet so simple with breath your name by Sixpence playing in the BG,

Otis: "It was never about the clinic, it was to be close to you – and even if we aren't romantically together, id like to see you everyday, Nothing feels right when you aren't here"

This is more about companionship and soulmate-ism too than just a sexual relationship or deep crush situation. Even if they aren't together romantically, and still wanting to be close to her is big big thing & detail for at least something good and warm for them in future, because he hasn't confessed this to anyone or ruby even which was initially a casual relationship even. This explains pretty well that even if they aren't together or intended to be together, - the staying close + together or near each other is enough to make day.

Maeve: "It wasn't about the money for me, it was also to be close to you too

Maeve doesn't say much but a) smiles when he says we can be team and due to nearness to her he wanted to work on further and b).she exclaims and rebuts his claim that she was in it for money only when she has never been lucky in family/financial dept and wanted to be close to her too, but also how this was method for her to earn money too so like double benefit because maeve does need money and we cannot reduce her to romantic person only but the hardworking intelligent and practical persona she carries and embodies! and wants to rise academically and also does it selflessly, doesn't obstruct or infringe on someone's rights like most people do. But she also does admit at the same time it wasnt just for the money. With the background music score this moment might be the best cliché end or romantic confession even if in future it doesn't mean much because words...are winds and fade away, but i cannot deny the canon visible goodness these both characters bring out in one another, its like they do compliment and fit each other which i always find quite evident from s1 until s2 made their friendship too sour but its about what they bring in each other and only think abt themselves in each others presence. When they are with someone else they think about other things clouding their mind yet sometimes when they talk to each other, its like they both do comfort each other or it wouldn't have pained the writers to show how visibly hateful they are if they were. Perhaps the abortion moment in s1 was also very warm and changed my mind so much abt them, its like how otis is always there in worse situations for maeve along with aimee too ofc, and sometimes its childish to see him try so hard and desperate to be there but she eventually lets him in.

The invincible comic is like super gratuitous with its violence so much so I'm shocked the show was able to adapt it in a faithful way! what relationships do you wish had been featured more throughout the show? are there aspects of any relationships (like how Blair's treatment of Jenny effects her relationship with Dan) you wish had been explored more? ((I'm talking both romantic and platonic))

oh this is such a fun question!! i wanted to really sit and get to it, hence the long wait time (sorry!) so here we go!

relationships i wanted more of:

first, and this is a popular opinion, i think blair and serena should've been the focus of the show, instead of blair and chuck. a dynamic that was strongly platonic, but with blurred boundaries and romantic implications like the books, where romance is neither confirmed nor denied but all the subtext is there - i think that would've given the show actual backbone. blairena for the win!!

something i have said a lot on my blog is that the danessa friend breakup SUCKED. it was really shitty (and racist!) that dan can forgive his white friends ANYTHING (serena did that whole revenge porn thing - which i think is really ooc but that's another conversation - and dan marries her) but vanessa is unforgiveable for... what exactly? stealing his story and publishing it without his permission? dude, she did that to you before in 1x11 (?? i think it was 1x11) and you were DELIGHTED that your story was being published. you can't blame her so harshly if you never set that boundary. anyway dan and vanessa should've had a blair and serena kind of friendship (& the first two seasons really implied that that WAS how their friendship was) where there's a certain coming back to each other no matter what, even if it's unhealthy.

i've said this before on my blog, too, but i wanted more sibling stuff!! serena&eric and dan&jenny were like. my favourite things about the early seasons. their dynamics were so real and it was so nice; it brought out a different side to the characters that was really refreshing and interesting to see. dan & serena were both so protective of jenny & eric respectively, in a way that they weren't with anybody else, and jenny & eric had a really candid and honest kind of relationship with their elder sibs, which they didn't have with their parents, and it was just. it gave the show so much more HEART, ok.

i also really wanted more platonic jenny and nate! my 2 favourite jenny and nate moments are that bit in seventeen candles (when will it stop? / it'll stop when you stop it - or whatever it is that quote is, cant remember it verbatim right now) and also that moment in.. the empire strikes jack, i think it is? where nate's comforting jenny and she's like 'what's wrong with me' and he just. looks at her with quiet disbelief before he says, firmly, 'nothing is wrong with you'..... nate & jenny had that thing i love about dan & serena, where they could have REAL conversations with each other, and be fully honest AND vulnerable with each other. and while there was a lot about their dynamic that was canonically not the healthiest, i felt like. they both had a really special type of platonic intimacy? and i really liked that. i wanted to see more of that.

i would've liked to see more nate & chuck, but minus the glorifying chuck. as the show goes on, it's like there's two nates, the nate who actually cares about people and respects women and you can trust, and the nate who shares whiskey with chuck and looks the other way when chuck is being abusive, even if it's with blair. this is a bad writing choice, obviously. i would've liked to see nate grapple with being chuck's friend, and realise that he CANNOT possibly support chuck and still be a good person. though of course that is too much to expect from this garbage show.

nate, blair and serena as a trio!!! i wanted more platonic scenes like that thanksgiving flashback from s1. in the books, they were childhood friends, but in a very 'their childhoods were totally intertwined' and the show scrapped that, which i think is rlly sad. there was something so special about nate, serena and blair knowing each other in a way nobody else does, because they've seen each other grow up, and their childhoods are SO merged, and they are just. so close. that would've been SO good.

and well. platonic nate and blair specifically! they've dated for so long, they obviously know a LOT about each other. i think it would be cool if there was more of like. nate knowing things about blair that nobody else does, and blair knowing things about nate that nobody else does.

aspects of relationships to be explored more...... hmmm

the nate & chuck thing is there. i mean. how can nate be besties with jenny AND with chuck. HOW. for a long period of time he canonically is. but that doesn't seem right.

idk if this goes here but i wish that things like the catherine stuff and the rachel stuff and the ben stuff had been handled with appropriate gravity, and we'd actually seen what it meant for those characters, instead of it just being there for the ~scandal~ and then tossed aside.

something i remember from seventeen candles as well is jenny talking about how it's uncomfortable being at home because of her parents. so that follows that nate knows something nobody else really does - which is that the humphreys have a complicated home background as well. like their lives are not perfect. i think it would've been neat if that came up more, in say, nate's friendship with dan. like him just being like "i know your mom leaving was hard on you" and dan being like "what the fuck who told you that????" and nate being like oh shit because he didn't think before he said it and this is dan not jenny

i think it's really interesting how much dan and vanessa don't feel at ease with their own parents, but feel at ease with the other's parents. like the way vanessa is around rufus - weird accidental romantic undertones aside, she actually likes his company and appreciates his advice, and her relationship with her mom...... is not like that. but the way dan tries to fix vanessa and gabriella's relationship........... it's obvious that he's closer to vanessa's mother than he is to his own mother. i think there was potential for some really interesting stuff there.

oh ive said this before, too, but. we didn't get ruby abrams!!! :(

i also think tv!dan should've gotten a boyfriend. i mean. book dan did. but i think now im getting distracted
