Children Adventures
Fluff (adventure)
Chapter 213
1650 Words
(Children's adventures with Jisoo, Ari, Hina, and Daeun. They spend time with their grandparents and explore Hawaii.)
Grandparents:
Jihyo’s Mom and Dad
Mina’s Mom and Dad
Chaeyoung’s Mom
Sana’s Mom and Dad
It’s 9 a.m., and the babies have breakfast with their grandparents. The babies sit in their high chairs and eat cereal and apple sauce.
All the grandfathers eat together across the living room and discuss on their own as the grandmas sit beside the children at the table and watch as they eat with their hands.
“Jisoo and Ari eat very well. They are going to be strong when they grow up” says Sana’s mom.
“Look at Hina over here; she’s trying to share some of her food with Daeun,” says Jihyo’s mom.
“Thank you for sharing your apple sauce with Daeun. You’re such a big sister,” says Chaeyoung’s mom. Hina gets happy hearing that she’s a big sister and shows her gummy smile.
“Haha, look at Hina. Just like her mom and that cute smile,” says Jihyo’s mom.
While the children eat, the member’s moms talk about the wedding, mainly about your performance. “I still can’t believe that you actually had him give you a strip dance,” laughs Mina’s mom.
“I didn’t know since Chae was embarrassed. I wanted to tease her a bit, but I guess I’m the one who got the long end of the stick.”
“You mean…”
“When he placed me on the floor, I panicked since it was dark. I tried to grab him, but I ended up touching it by accident,” and covers her blushing face
The mothers laugh at her embarrassment and tease her, “Was it big?”
They quietly wait for her to answer with full interest until she finally speaks up, “It felt bigger than my hand,” showing her small hands. The women laugh, causing the babies to look up.
Mina’s mom looks at Jihyo’s mom and says, “You have a hung son-in-law,” causing Jihyo’s mom to smile proudly.
“Thank you. My daughter has told me about it, and I’m happy she’s getting her fill. Happy that resulted in my first grandchild, too,” looking at Jisoo eating her fill of apple sauce.
“What was your reaction when she told you that she was pregnant?” asked Chaeyoung’s mom. Jihyo’s mom tries to remember when you and Jihyo got together and says, “Hmm… it’s a funny story, actually. When they started going out, they would hang out at the house. It was cute seeing Jihyo act girly since she has a strong personality. Haha… I still remember going to the girls’ school for an event, coming home a bit early, and hearing the two of them in Jihyo’s room with the door closed making noises. I placed my head by the door, could tell they were fooling around, and knocked on it. The face they made was to die for, haha. Later that day, I sat down with Jihyo and reminded her of her job as an idol and not to have dating rumors. I told her she could have him come over and, if they were both serious about their relationship, do it here, at the house, and not in a hotel. From then on, I would give them two space in the house while doing my errands. I would see the smile on their faces when I would come home. As you all know, they had Jisoo there much later.”
“How come you gave them the okay to have sex at our house?” asked Chae’s mom.
“We knew it would happen sooner or later, so we thought it would be easier to control the situation and have them do it somewhere safe. Plus, her dad and I are not your typical parents; we still have sex, drink, and even tell Jihyo to drink with us.”
Chae’s mom is surprised by her comment and looks around the group of moms and sees them nod in agreement.
Mina’s mom is about to give her own input, but Ari interrupts their conversation by flicking some apple sauce to Jisoo's face, causing her to get upset and yell at Ari.
After having breakfast, everyone gets ready and heads out to the aquarium. The children are in their strollers and enter the small aquarium. The first exhibit they see is a large fish tank where all the fish from the movie Finding Nemo can be seen.
The Twins and Jisoo jump off their stroller and plant their faces on the glass as they try to see the fish resembling Dory and Nemo. “Look, Jisoo-chan, Ari-Chan, you can see Dory over there,” says Sana’s dad. The two run towards the other side of the glass and raise their arms to be picked up.
“Up, up!”
Jihyo’s dad and Sana’s dad pick them up to where Dory is swimming, and they tap the glass. On the other hand, Hina walks to her grandpa and pulls on his shorts. He looks down and sees Hina with her puppy dog eyes, pointing at the glass, “Ne…Nemo.” Her grandpa picks her up and walks to where the Nemo fish is swimming, “Look, Hina, it’s Nemo.” She looks at the fish, slowly pokes at the glass, and traces her, following the fish. When the fish swims away, she turns to her grandpa and kisses him on the cheek, thanking him. He smiles and laughs at the sudden kiss, causing Hina to show her gummy smile.
After finishing the fish exhibit, they walk to an open area and take pictures of the children. Before moving to the shark exhibit, they stop by some benches and have a snack. Walking to the exhibit, they see a large tank of different shark species. Hina is the first to point at the shark and shout, “White!”
Her grandpa strolls beside her and says, “Were you trying to say great white shark?” Hina nods, and he replies, “Close, but that’s a bull shark. Is a great white shark your favorite animal?” She nods and says, “White, white!” while holding her arms up. She picks her up and moves alongside the shark as it swims in the large tank.
Ari and Jisoo, on the other hand, look at the sharks and make noises, imitating biting sounds. They start to play around the pathway, chasing each other until their grandmas get their attention and ask them to stop. They stop and are sternly warned to behave like Hina and Daeun, who are sleeping.
They exit the shark exhibit and stop by the gift shop for a souvenir. Jisoo picks out the jellyfish, Ari, the penguin, Daeun gets Dory, Hina picks the great white shark, and the grandparents get souvenirs.
They all head to the next stop, a family-friendly hotel with pools meant for small children. Some of the men go to reverse a tent while the others change into something more comfortable.
The babies come out waddling to the tent with their one-pieces and hats while Daeun is carried. With everyone in the tent, they place a soft mat for Daeun and Hina to play in.
Meanwhile, Jisoo and Ari point at the water, “play… play.” “Do you want to go in after asks Ari’s grandma. Ari and Jisoo nod their heads and grab their floaties. Jisoo’s and Ari’s grandpa put on their vest and took them into the shallow pool. With their donut floaty around them, they splash each other.
Hina, with her cute outfit and shades, watches her sisters play in the water. She turns occasionally to watch Daeun play with her tofu plushy that Dahyun got her.
Daeun, after playing with her toy, begins to cry out of hunger. Hina gets off her chair, walks to Daeun’s baby baby, and pulls out the bottle her grandma prepared for her. She walks to her grandma and says, “Da eat,” while rubbing her belly.
“Are you saying that Daeun is hungry?” Hina nods and points at Daeun, who is crying. “Would you like to feed her?” Hina replies, “Me sister” and waits for Daeun to be placed in her stroller.
Hina then shakes the bottle and gives it to her baby sister. Daeun immediately begins to suck on the bottle and looks at Hina, who is smiling at her.
A few minutes later, Jisoo and Ari return from the pool. “Omg, you, too, have a small tan! Did Grandpa forget to reapply the sunscreen?” The both of them laugh as both their grandpas apologize to their wives.
Sana’s mom then comments, “You took are going to look like Jihyo and Mina with their tans.” The rest of the parents laugh at the idea of the babies looking like their mothers.
They spend several more hours at the pool and go in multiple times. Ari tries to get Hina inside the pool but doesn’t want to get wet and decides only to soak her legs.
After a long day, they all return to the house with some local food on the way back. The grandparents place a short table in the middle of the large living room and begin to eat.
“Kids, it’s time to eat!” yells Chaeyoung’s mom.
The twins and Jisoo, after getting home decide to run around with their new toys in the backyard and play monster. Hina, who got a great white shark, chases Jisoo, Ari, and the yard. The other two scream and laugh as they try to escape Hina.
Then they hear it’s time for dinner, they run inside the house and ask to get picked up, “wash.” After washing their hands, they go to the living room and stuff their faces as the rest of the adults are still in the kitchen. “What are you girls doing?” They lift their faces covered in rice and sauce, causing the rest to laugh. Jisoo holds her hand, offers them some of her rice, and smiles.

Death and My Life
⚠️Warning for talks of suicide and other grim death topics!!⚠️
People worry about me when they find out how casual I am about death
To them, I’m depressing, grim, haunted and troubled
“Dont think like that”
“Are you okay?”
“Doesn’t it bother you?”
And in truth, it used to, in the past.
I used to want it to come faster, used to wish I’d never wake up.
Ive been in some dark places, but now, death is a faint comfort.
I dont desire it, not anymore.
Instead, I walk alongside it.
People look at me strange when I tell them it relaxes me, and I cant for the life of me begin to explain.
But death, is already a part of me. A part of everything.
We’re all on one big fuse destined to explode and collapse one day.
We are not infinite.
Growing up, death was something that happened around us, something we didn’t think about.
You dont consider that your hamburger is dead, that bouquet you picked from the yard is dead, that bug squashed by the flyswatter is dead, the squirrel smeared across the road is dead.
Death was something that happened to things, to objects, but certainly not to people.
We’d see it on the tv in nature documentaries, maybe you discected a frog in school, maybe you squashed a lizard in a door or watched a fish choke to death as you held it from a string out of water
Maybe your first experience with death was a pet.
Maybe a grandparent.
Or maybe even a dear friend.
Mine was a boy.
I didn’t know him well, just his name and his face.
Maybe that makes it worse, that he was a random kid.
We were grade-mates.
He was nice, I would watch him play at recess and heard him be called upon in class.
I didnt really know him.
I didn’t know his favorite color or favorite animal or even what cartoons he liked to watch.
One day, he was gone.
We were only children, just barely double digits.
11, maybe 12.
He shot himself.
And then he was gone.
His seat, empty for the rest of the year.
I never saw him again, and for a while, the world felt empty.
So this is death.
I thought to myself.
I wasn’t really all that sad.
Couldn’t be.
I didnt know him,
But I cant forget him.
I still think about him, from time to time.
Think about how we would have graduated together, probably gone to high school together.
Nobody talks about him anymore.
Hes gone.
It surprised me, to be truthful, about how death can just come and go so silently.
I don’t think I can go back to how I was before.
But now, I find death an odd comfort.
I collect the dead, be it bones or furs or leather.
Its like they matter, like now there’s someone there still to see them.
They didn’t just dissappear.
They didn’t stop showing up.
Their body is here, but still they’re gone.
Its comfoting, to know that in some bleak way, nothing matters.
We’ll all dissappear.
We’ll all die.
It’s inevitable.
There’s no stopping it.
So, why should you care about anything besides your joy?
We’ll all die
So enjoy what you want.
Why judge anyone for what they like when at the end of it all
We’ll all just be another obituary
Sure, its sad, and it can be scary.
We cry, but we’re human.
Theres nothing we could have done
Maybe it makes me apathetic or cynical
But I’ve grown weary of worrying about my clock.
Sure, i know its ticking.
But isnt everyone’s?
You cant run from death
So its the strongest thing to believe in.
I’ve stopped running
When it happens, it’ll happen
And I’ll leave knowing i’ve done all i could to be as happy as I can.
Whatever happens afterwards will happen
Because as far as this realm is concerned
It doesnt matter

Yandere Muzan Kibutsuji Headcanons
Warnings: Yandere behavior, talking about death, physical abuse (broken bones), demon mention, cage mention, and quiet treatment.
Author Note: I do not approve of yandere behavior in real life. I do not own this character either! Enjoy B)
Muzan has lived many, many years. Seen humans die, children grow old and grandparents slowly go into the earth. Due to this, Muzan knows a lot about human anatomy. He knows how weak, miserable humans can be. How easy they can fall apart with just a few words. How noticeable they are when they’re scared and trembling in their boots. He’s highly intelligent, and not afraid to kill a mere human who is annoying. He says he’s the most perfect demon ever seen and expects people to treat him as a god; bow down to him whenever they see him and treat him as a king, and follow his orders with no complaints.
If you somehow get Muzans attention, you are considered special; someone who he can have and spend time with.
He would’ve seen you one day when he was with his “wife” and his “daughter”. He saw you and kept looking at you like a fish on a hook. He could tell something was different about you, just by your smell, and personality. He would be angered, by these feelings towards you. He’d try his best to stop on why he’s feeling these emotions like he’s connected to you. It makes him sick to his stomach, but whenever he smells you or sees you; it’s as if he’s cured. The feeling of calmness comes around him like he’s not on edge and he slowly becomes obsessed.
You could be a Hashira, a clever and fast one at that. Or a smart human that was well clever on demon anatomy; able to tell their weaknesses immediately. Someone who is intelligent in knowing many things, including knowing information on the demons or: Muzan himself.
He would kidnap you within a few weeks (2-3) of stalking you, he’d be taking in information about you; what your dislikes are, hows your reputation, your strengths; mentally and physically. Your weaknesses and lastly; who and what you work for. Most likely, he’ll get his Upper Moons to stalk you as he’s a busy man. Though, he does prefer to watch you himself and observe your schedule. Finding your little quirks adorable.
If you have any type of partners or children, they’re dead. Any important family members and friends will get demolished, turned into a demon, or get killed in the most gruesome ways possible. He doesn’t want his “partner” to get any ideas of getting married as they belong to him. Soon enough, you would come home exhausted, maybe from a mission or going around getting information on the Upper Moons. You would get knocked out by a powerful drug that Muzan nicked you with, and get picked up by the Demon King. He’d softly pat your hair, and be on the way to the Infinity Castle.
His yandere tendencies are very strict, possessive, and almost frightening if you break any of his rules. He will most likely manipulate you into staying with him; not that you have a choice. He would be saying 'You’re weak and miserable without me, I’m the only one who can protect you' or he would gaslight you thinking you really are weak and must need his protection: that you’ll die if he’s not around.
The way he shows his affection is complicated. He could force you to cuddle him and hug him; has soft nights where he’s gentle, massaging your back, letting you talk about your favorite things, going shopping to find expensive clothes to a very controlling and really strict schedule. He wants you in bed at 7 AM sharp, he wants you to be quiet when you're sitting on his lap, same goes for moving too much. Will grip your face if you say something he doesn't like (No, I don’t know, shrugging your shoulders, not replying fast enough, etc.) He likes to mess with your brain at times.
Though, if you decide to break his rules; His punishments wander from mental to physical punishments. It really depends on what you did. If you tried to run away, for example: he’d break a leg for you even trying. You wouldn’t even get far as one of the upper moons would fetch you back. If it’s more of a physical attack: kicking or punching. He’d lock you in a cage, where rebellious pets belong. He’d only feed you once a day, giving you the silent treatment and giving you the death glare to make you shut it If you'd decide to whine. He’d wait for you to crawl back at him when you become desperate enough.
However, if you are using words, like throwing threats; he’d find it funny and almost laughable. He does enjoy seeing you pity out anger on him, as you're a weak human who can’t do damage. He wouldn’t punish you for saying insults or threats, but he’d look at you in a way for you to zip it quickly.
Though he doesn’t like hurting you physically, he prefers using manipulation or gaslighting. The reason is that it can be a slower process for you to fall in love with him if he abuses you. Once again, if you do behave. Nothing really bad happens to you, besides getting “loved” on and being spoiled. However, he will try his best to make you forget your past life. He would (try to) force you to forget your family members and past partners; Your old lifestyle and how you worked. He wants you to focus on him and him only, aka: depend on him.
Most likely, due to Muzans fear of him losing you; he’ll turn you into a demon. Even if you break his rules: try to run away or physically “hurt” him, he’ll force you to sit still even if he has to use his tentacles to keep you still. He needs his partner well and elegantly to stay by his side; high and well respected.
Soon enough, you’d fall under Stockholm Syndrome pretty quickly as his manipulation is like sweet chocolate; passes through you. Once again, he knows how weak humans can be, so he can get under your skin. He’d make you rely on him once you are under Stockholm Syndrome: depend on him for safety, trust, and love.

Yandere Headcanon: Platonic Yandere Kikiyo x Spiritual Child
Quick Summary: You are the only child of a Farming Family on the outskirts of Kikiyo's Village, but unlike most children - your spiritual power was nearly on par with the Priestess herself, but you had no true control of it. One day, a demon attacks your farm and your rage triggers your power to fight it...and that lures Kikiyo to you and your family. She offers to help you control your power...but is that all she wants for you?
Note: This happens before Kikiyo came in contact with the Sacred Jewel & met Inuyasha.
You didn't have much but you had your mother & father, as well as the small farm that was left behind by your grandparents; the produce that was grown there kept food on the table and your parents happy. You had enough and you were happy with that.
You would help your father in the fields in the morning, fishing in the afternoon, hunting in the evening, and aiding your mother with cooking when the shadows blanked at the land. You were thankful for the life you had and you were pleased your grandfather left you the farm... But, what of your grandmother? What did she leave you?
Well... She left you a well of Spiritual Power.
Your Grandmother came from a long line of Priestesses but for some reason, the gift was cut off from her family - first, her great grandmother was born without power followed by everyone in that bloodline, then her mother and that line, followed by her and her line, but when it came to you - it would have seemed that the non-existent power went to you.
It was clear to your parents that you had the gift - when you took your first cries, waves of spiritual power wreaked the area around them until you were calm and it only got worse as you grew - whenever you lost control of your emotions, your power would roar to life and destroy things around you; that's why your parents try to teach you to remain calm. The best way you remained calm was going on nature walks or climbing trees, but your parents would tell you to remain close so you would be able to hear them if they called you.
And then, there was the day you disobeyed them - the day you saw the Village's High Priestess.
You were walking through the forest on a trail that you made from your countless trips into the vegetation when you reached its end, you were about to turn back when you felt a pulsing coming from your core and it was leading you deeper down the forest path. You thought about what your parents said but you remembered that your mother was sleeping and your father was out in a nearby village to sell the produce.
A few moments - you thought - just to explore more and then you would head home; your mother and father would not notice that you were gone.
You climbed the trees and moved from branch to branch, tree to tree, until you stopped on a branch of the last tree of the forest, that lead to a grass field and a shallow river - the same river you and your father would fish from but it would be further down.
Your ears picked up on the sound of multiple children laughing and giggling - you looked further down the river and show a group of 6 children playing in and around the river with smiles on their faces and...there was a woman: She was tall with pale skin, black hair, and black eyes, she was wearing a red & white priestess robe, there was a quiver on her back and a bow in her hand; she was watching the children with a small smile on her face and a calmness in her eyes, but you could feel the aura coming from her.
'Was the feeling coming from her?' you questioned yourself.
You watched them for a while - the children played and the woman watched them until she looked up at the sky, at the position of the sky then she called the children, telling them it was time to head back to the village. They began gathering together and walked down a dirt trail, the woman began following them... when she stopped and turned halfway, her black eyes were facing in your direction.
'Was she looking at me? Can she see me?' you questioned again...and you could feel her eyes into yours but you couldn't really tell if she could see you that far. The woman turned back to the trail and began following the children. You looked at the trail for a while before you turned back and headed home - neither of your parents knew of your little adventure.
And then - the day came: When a massive demon attacked your family at the farm.
You were sitting in one of your favorite tree spots when two loud noises broke the sound barrier of peace around you and made the birds take to the skies in fear - The Horrible Squeal of a Pig & Your Mother screaming! You jumped out of the tree and ran back to the farm, only to find your father was beaten half to death and a large hog demon in armor, holding your mother by her hair in his large hands.
You yelled for the hog to let your mother go but he just laughed, calling you a weak mortal that wouldn't even be considered a meal to him. The anger rose within you and your power burst through like an overflowing river - you lunged and struck the creature in his face, making them stumble back and drop your mother, who then ran to aid your father.
Your parents watched as you fought the creature but when it managed to knock you to the ground and you lost your power. The beast was going to flatten you into the ground when an arrow imbued with scared power came soaring out of nowhere and entered the beast's brain - tearing it apart from the inside out, making the headless body fall to the ground. You all looked in the direction it came from and...there she was - the woman you saw.
She introduced herself - her name was Kikiyo and she was the Head Priestess of a village further down the hill. She explained that she felt a strong spiritual presence and came to investigate but she never expected for such a small child to contain that kind of power - power close to matching her own. She told your parents that she would train you to control your power so that you would be able to protect them and yourself better.
Your parents didn't like the idea - something about the priestess didn't feel right to them - but you agreed that it would be best for you to control your power and maybe become a demon hunter. Seeing your dedication, they agreed but they were going to watch her.
Kikiyo had you meet her by the river where you saw her first time - she insisted that you came alone; too much spiritual power can harm others that are not protected or prepared. Your training began with meditation - being able to keep your power under wraps, even when angered. You and her sat by the river and meditated for hours on end.
A month into meditation training, you arrived at the river and she had something for you - A robe just like hers but it was black and blue; the opposite of her colors. You were honored to receive it from her but she just smiled, ruffled your hair, and said "Anything for my little student."; she was like a big sister to you.
She taught you how to call your power to the surface at will, how to control it, and - when you were ready - she let you choose your weapon and began teaching you to channel your power into the weapon. She was a great teacher but she wouldn't just perform teacher duties.
Every day, she would bring you rice balls and tea for your lunch, even when you told her you weren't hungry, she would make you eat. "You need to eat to maintain a proper diet, I will not have my student sick or weak." - she would say.
When you came to practice with a wound, she would insist on patching you up; regardless of how old the wound was or even if it healed. "It may look well but it could be infected. Is that what you want, to lose a limb or your life?" -she would claim.
When she would ask you about your day, you would talk about your moments with your parents with a smile on your face but she would be angered. "I asked you about your day, not about them; I don't want to hear about them when we are having time together... You know, we should make some memories of our own." - she would say as she looked at you with an unknown emotional mist in her eyes. You didn't like it.
One day, you went to meet her but she said that you weren't gonna do training - she was gonna take you to her village to enjoy a day off because you deserved it for all your hard work. You were wary of her words but at the same time, you always wanted to see her village so you went. You had a good time with the children there and she seemed happy to have you there.
When you were about to leave, she asked you to stay with them: "Everyone here loves you." "You and I have so much in common that it would not be an issue for you to fit in here." "This place has more to offer than your small farm." - She would say, but you declined, saying that nothing could replace your family, and you left.
The next morning - changed your life forever.
You woke to the sounds of your mother screaming in fear and your father yelling in pain. You grabbed your weapon and ran outside just in time to see an arrow pierce your mother's chest and spiritual energy tore her apart. Your eyes widened when you saw that it was Kikiyo that fired the arrows that ended your parents' lives.
"Why?" - that was all you could ask her as you gripped your weapon in your hand.
"Don't you see? You were never meant to stay with them. The power you wield is like mine, you were meant to be mine; that's why my energy called out to yours. Now that your false family is gone, I shall raise you as you were meant to be raised and you shall not fight me..." - She readied a bow and arrow at you - "Or you shall know pain, My Child."
[End]

Good with Kids - Kristie Mewis x Reader
Prompt: Maybe like R is very hard but soft with kids? Idk whatever u want I don’t care as long as it’s Queen Mewis.
Note, so pretty sure this sucks, so let me know.
“And the crew down there are my nieces and nephews,” Kristie motioned to the group pf young kids racing around the yard, the oldest being only eight, youngest three, trying to keep up the older kids. Y/N nodded seriously, taking in all the name and faces she had met at the family barbeque.
“Kristie, stop calling them that, it sounds like I have a stash of kids that no one knows about,” Sam stomped a foot, dramatically complaining to her sister.
“I don’t know family tree math,” Kristie shrugged her shoulders.
“Cousins Kris, they’re called cousins,” Sam rolled her eyes.
“Whatever, same thing,” Kristie smiled, knowing she was getting under her sisters skin, Y/N finally cracking a small smile.
“Not the same thing!” Sam exclaimed, she knew what Kristie was doing, but couldn’t help her reaction, drawing the attention of several other family members. Kristie grinned in return while her sister scowled, the family members all giggling, used to the two sisters bantering.
“Be nice to your sister Kristie,” her mom warned, with a smile.
Sam grinned triumphantly at her sister, who just rolled her eyes and tugged Y/N’s hand to the stairs of the deck, leading her to meet the group of kids.
“I thought you liked this girl Kristie,” one of her aunts teased when she saw where they were headed.
Kristie laughed, “I do,” she squeezed one of Y/N’s cheeks, drawing another small smile from the normally stoic woman, “but I think she’ll be able to handle herself.”
“Good, then come sit with me” her grandma cut in, shooing one of the other older grandchildren out of a chair next to her.
Kristie bit her lip and gave Y/N a hesitant look, Y/N giving her a reassuring smile and nod in return, pushing Kristie to sit with her grandparents.
Y/N walked the rest of the way down to kids playing tag in the grass. Kristie sat in the chair, shifting it so she could still see Y/N.
“She’s survived this long today, she won’t run away now,” her aunt teased, handing Kristie another beer.
“I know, but look at her,” Kristie motioned to where Y/N was already beginning to play tag with the kids, “she’s kind of hot, I want to look at her all the time,” she winked at another cousin across from her, drawing an eyeroll from everyone, her grandma giving her a gentle smack in the bicep.
The group grew and shrunk as the afternoon wore on, people coming and going, joining different groups or bouncing between them all. Kristie did her best to concentrate on the people around her, but her focus kept shifting down to the large yard where Y/N was still with the kids, them having accepted her as their own.
The kids and Y/N had found a youth size football, a small game going on. The word game used loosely, mostly the kids running around and Y/N gently throwing it for them to catch or running with it and them all tackling her to the ground. The adults all watched on, sharing smiles when they saw how happy all the kids were, Y/N distributing attention to them all, none of them feeling left out. Shifting easily to be a little rougher with the bigger kids, and incredibly gentle with the smaller ones.
“Alright, go get your kid and we’ll get ours,” one of the aunts smiled at Kristie, motioning to the group of kids attempting to drag Y/N down, “supper is ready.”
The pair made their way down the stairs, “supper guys, go wash your hands,” the aunt clapped her hands, gaining the attention of the group.
“Five more minutes!” the oldest called out.
“Yeah! Five more minutes!” Y/N called out from the bottom of the pile of kids, head popping up while she gently lifted a small body off her, it quickly replaced by another.
The rest of the parents all laughed, having been prepared to wrangle their own kids to the table, not expecting the lone adult to be difficult as well. Kristie stared at her girlfriend, mouth agape, before closing it and giving Y/N a hard stare.
Y/N immediately began sitting up, shifting kids to sit up with her, “supper guys! Lets go wash our hands!” the kids all began to scamper off her and race to the bathroom to wash their hands.
“Guess who just earned all future babysitting jobs,” one of the uncles patted Kristie on the back while following the rest of the family inside.
Kristie’s eyes never left Y/N as she pushed herself up once all limbs were untangled from her, brushing off any loose grass before meeting Kristie’s, giving her a wide smile.
“You really are a big kid, aren’t you?” Kristie met her as Y/N began to walk forward, wrapping her arms around her middle.
Y/N smiled down at the blonde, wrapping an arm of her own around Kristie’s shoulders, the couple making their way to the house.
Y/N pulled away when they walked in the house, washing her hands, before sitting at the table next to Kristie.
Supper was a loud, busy thing. Family all talking over each other, stories being thrown about, gentle ribbing all around.
“You are nothing like these two described you, Y/N,” an aunt smiled across the table, shooting a smirk to Kristie, who rolled her eyes at the teasing.
“Oh?” Y/N turned, giving Kristie a smirk of her own, then shifting her eyes to Sam, who blushed at the look.
“Yupp!” an uncle grinned as well, “Sammy makes you sound terrifying,” he nudged the blushing blonde, “I think she’s scared of you.” Y/N had a hard exterior, and was very quiet, many people interpreting both for her to be very unapproachable.
“I am not!” Sam was quick to defend herself, “I’m not scared of you Y/N,” she looked at Y/N eyes wide, still blushing, Y/N continued to smirk at her, “I’m not!”
“Sure you’re not Sammy,” Y/N just winked, “what are you telling them?”
“Nothing! Kristie says stuff,” Sam stammered out, trying to push the blame onto her sister, pointing across the table. Kristie giggled at how flushed her sister got over nothing.
“They’re fishing Ssmmy,” Kristie smiled, resting a hand on Y/N’s thigh, the couple smiling as Sam flopped back in her chair, mouth wide, realizing she fell right into it.
The table as laughing at Sam, Kristie squeezed Y/N’s thigh, leaning slightly into her side, tilting her chin up and smiling at her girlfriend.
Someone else was about to tease Sam as well, but was cut off by cutlery hitting a plate, a loud “no” being called from the children’s table further down. Everyone looked over to a pouting toddler, arms crossed, lips pursed out, eyebrows furrowed. An exasperated ten year old glaring down. Letting out a sigh, an aunt pushed up from the table, squatting in between the children, working to sooth both upset children.
After a few minutes, the aunt stood up with the toddler in her arms, taking the plate off the table with her and returning to her original seat, toddler remaining on her lap.
The pout remained firm on the toddler’s face with his face tucked into his mom’s neck. Everyone else ignored the outburst, resuming conversation, mom continuing to try and encourage the boy to eat.
Part of the face peaked out, shyly trying to glance around the table, making eye contact with Y/N who made a funny face before anyone else noticed. Giggling, he tucked his face back in briefly, before coming back out, Y/N giving him another silly face.
His mom tried to encourage a fork of food, a grumbled “no”, and his face burrowed back in. Letting out a sigh, she dropped the fork back to his plate, going back to her own.
Y/N bit her lip when she noticed a small hand creep out and towards her plate, one eye peeking out from his mom’s shoulder. She slid her plate closer to the boy, offering her fork out to him. Supressing her own giggle, she watched while the boy awkwardly fisted the fork and stabbed blindly at food on her own plate, no one else at the table aware, having moved on to teasing someone else. The boys head finally lifted fully to put the forkful of food in his mouth, not gaining the attention of his mom.
“Oh Y/N I am so sorry,” she apologized once she realized where the fork of food had come from, noticing the plate of food pushed closer to them.
“Don’t worry about it, my food is just better I guess,” Y/N smirked, shrugging one shoulder, everyone giggling as the small boy reached out for another forkful of food.
“How come at camp you threatened to stab me with my own fork when I wanted to try some of your food?” Sam gasped when she watched the boy go in for a third forkful.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Y/N played coy, rotating the plate to give the boy something else to stab, subtly encouraging the pile of broccoli on the other side.
The boy crinkled his nose, trying to spear another piece of chicken on the far end. Y/N intercepted the fork, taking it into her own hand, and making a show of picking up broccoli and enjoying the bite. Winking at the boy, she stabbed a smaller piece, twirling the fork for his to take it.
Instead of using his hands, he leaned forward, eating off the fork while Y/N held it. His mom rolled her eyes, everyone else giggling at the boy. He pulled himself out of his moms arm, crawling awkwardly into Y/N’s lap.
“No, buddy, you can’t sit in Y/N’s lap,” his mom gripped his hips to try and pull him back.
“Don’t worry about it,” Y/N helped guide him the rest of the way, helping him settle in her lap.
Kristie stared lovingly at her girlfriend, watching as Y/N guided another forkful of broccoli into his mouth, the boy shook his head, refusing the vegetable. Y/N smiled, diverting the fork to her mouth, taking the bite with a dramatic chomping sound. His eyes tracked the motion, before clumsily picked up his fork to mimic the action.
Y/N smirked and shot a wink to his mom, everyone’s mouths dropping when he took another without prompting. The meal continued on, the pair continuing to eat off each other’s plates, the boy no longer complaining about eating any of the food.
Desert took everyone to the backyard, a fire having been started, ingredients for smores set out. Several of the kids having found their way to Y/N’s lap, one sat on either thigh, a third squished in the middle, and two more with chairs pulled as close as possible on either side.
Everyone watched while Y/N gave each child equal attention, helping one put a marshmallow on the skewer while answering another’s question, managing to keep all settled.
“You’ve got a good one Kristie,” an aunt leaned over when she saw the blonde watching her girlfriend, her gave soft, smile wide as she took in the woman with all the kids.
Kristie shyly looked away, “I know,” she looked to her aunt, “except now she has me jealous of a bunch of kids.”
They watched as Y/N helped a smaller hand onto to one stick, her other protectively holding a leaning body off her knee.
“That’s alright, I am too,” the uncle on the other side chuckled, “we have spent years trying to get them to all get along and she strolls in and does it without even trying.”
The adults kept an eye on the kids and Y/N, looking over frequently when they noticed how quiet the whole group had gotten. Parents brought their phones out, snapping several pictures of the entire crew asleep. Y/N reclined in the chair, three bodies in her lap leaning into her chest, two on either side snuggled under each arm.

The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Dogfish
Summary: Lily brings home a dogfish. When Ginny doesn't approve, Harry wonders if there is something else bothering her. If he recalled correctly, it hadn't been very long since his wife had brought home a really old seahorse. Then what really was the matter?
Read it on Fanfiction if you prefer!
...
“To be fair, he followed me home.”
“He is a fish — “
“— dogfish.”
“And he doesn’t have legs! So, tell me Lils, how in Triton’s hell did he magically walk out of water and follow you home?”
Lily huffed, crossing her arms and avoiding her mum’s look. Then, as a peace offering, she peeked out from under her hair and smiled sheepishly, to which her mum only raised an eyebrow.
“Oh, you can’t deny he’s not cute,” she whined, and then bent down to pick him up, while the pup (fish?) nuzzled his nose into her shirt.
“If you ask me, he’s kinda creepy,” James piped in.
“He is not! And no one asked you!”
She watched as her mum narrowed her eyes in her typical mum way, and then sighed, and Lily knew half the battle was won.
“So?” she urged, and her mother glared at her, and then turned her glare towards James as he snickered. Albus raised his arms in defence as their mum turned to him, and hastily looked down at the ground.
“We,” Ginny sighed, shaking her head in defeat, “— oh, I’m going to regret this — we will talk about this when your dad comes home.”
“Does that mean we can keep him?”
“We will talk about this when your dad,” her mum repeated, looking each of them in the eye, “comes home.”
They nodded, giving each other sombre looks, while the puppy-fish, (fuppy, pish?) yapped excitedly.
“For Triton’s sake, first her brother brings home a dolphin.ow her, a bloody dogfish,” Ginny muttered, and then shooed them out of the kitchen, very well knowing she’d be fighting a losing battle.
Oh, she was definitely going to regret this.
…
“Oh, good you’re home,” Ginny said, folding and unfolding the Pall Mall Gazette. Harry looked at her in confusion, then at the paper, then back at her again, noting the skittish manner with which she was avoiding his gaze.
“I am?”
Ginny shot him a glare, hands on her hips, and Harry offered a sheepish smile.
“Sorry, I just — you sound mad. You look mad.”
“Do I?”
Harry bit back a smile, and then asked, “Who was it this time? James or Lils?”
“She brought home a dogfish,” Ginny gritted out. “A dogfish. With an orange fin. And a snout. A horribly disgusting, slobbering snout!”
Harry shot her a mirthful glance, before gesturing to her to continue.
“We don’t have space for a dogfish!”
“Don’t we?”
Ginny gestured again, waving her hands around as if that could prove her point, and Harry, in a moment of uncertainty, wondered if the dogfish was really the problem. It couldn’t be, for it hadn’t been long before she had herself come home with a seahorse; though it had turned out to be a really old seahorse and had died within a year.
“Ginny,” he started, in a different manner than before. “What’s wrong?”
He didn’t expect her to answer, at least not directly, but he certainly didn’t expect her to whack him on the head with the roll of paper. He winced, looking at her and wondering if she really had gone mad, before she started speaking through gritted teeth.
“Are you listening to anything I’m saying?”
“I am, Gin!” he said quickly. “But you need to talk to me. Really talk to me.”
“I am!”
“I don’t think so!”
“Lily brought a dogfish home!”
“Is the dogfish really the problem, Gin?” Harry asked, and watched as her face morphed from anger to uncertainty, and then back to anger as her brows furrowed, and she glanced back at him again.
“No,” she said curtly, with that stubborn frown on her face, and though Harry was glad he’d managed to figure her out (for once), he couldn’t really place his claims on what exactly had made her upset. She’d seemed fine that morning. He’d kissed her goodbye, she’d stopped it from becoming a full blown makeout session (their children were home, plus he’d had to go to work), and she’d smiled at him, and looked at him with that blazing look of hers, and he’d told her he’d be home early. Everything had been just as it was supposed to be. Everything had been fine.
Except now it wasn’t.
And then to his surprise, Ginny let her head fall on his shoulder, burying her face in his shirt, and Harry let his arms wrap around her, keeping her steady. He tucked her head under his chin, and rested his head on hers, the two of them in the middle of their hallway, arms around each other, and for the moment, it was the most natural thing they’d ever done.
And then her shoulders started shaking.
And Harry’s frown grew increasingly deeper.
“Hey,” he urged. “Gin, hey, hey.” He cupped her face and tilted it upwards, horrified to find her just barely holding back tears. Ginny sniffled, and swiped one hand across her face, further smearing her tears. Harry wiped the rest off with his thumbs, cursing silently to whoever, whatever had made her cry.
“Just… let me have this for a second, please, Harry?” Her voice cracked, and Harry brought her in against his chest, holding her tight, his heart racing a million miles per hour as he mulled over all the things that could have happened.
Then, on second thought, he bent down and picked her up, and it was the thought that she hadn’t even yelped at that, that made him feel an odd sense of triumph.
Harry settled on the couch, gently stroking her hair as she lay on his lap, her tears dampening his shirt, but he couldn’t have cared less.
And yet, he didn’t ask.
He didn’t push.
But he was glad that she trusted him so much to be vulnerable around him, and him around her. It had taken them fifteen years married to each other, and even longer than that, to really know the other like they did now. To know that if they were vulnerable around the other, it didn’t automatically make them weak in their eyes.
And yet, it didn’t change the fact that there he was with a crying Ginny, and him sorely wishing he could beat up the person who’d made her cry.
There were certainly few things he hated more than seeing his wife upset.
“I promise I’m still as sane as you,” Ginny mumbled from beneath him, and he looked down at her, brushing away her hair from her face.
“I never doubted that for a second,” Harry replied.
Ginny let out a laugh, albeit humourless, but it didn’t stop her from getting up and offering him a sad sort of smile. He looked at her, his chest clenching at how her eyes still occasionally watered. Harry opened his mouth, but before he did, Ginny got up from his lap, and sat beside him on the couch, facing away from him.
“Gin, talk to me?” he begged, “and don’t tell me it’s the damn dogfish again because I know, you know, it’s not.”
He caught a tear as it broke away from the dam, and rubbed his thumb against her cheek, his eyes begging for her to talk.
“I…” she sighed. “I want to play again.”
Ginny looked at him, and he was silent, so she continued.
“I want to play Quidditch again. I want to get into that arena, and feel the water rippling around me, and hear the Bludgers whizz by me, and hear the crowd yelling and screaming —” her voice broke, and a new wave of tears began to slip down her cheeks before she could stop them. “I’m sorry, this is ridiculous —“
“It’s not.”
“I-I need to get out there again. And it’s selfish of me, and it’s illogical that I suggest leaving Lily and Albus and James alone here; I mean, Lily’s just seven, but I can’t shake this-this feeling that I could — I should be doing more!”
“Hey,” Harry said, cupping her face and looking into her eyes. He didn’t exactly understand what was truly the matter; all he was really concentrating on was her tears, and how each time they fell, his heart beat painfully within his chest. “This is not selfish, or illogical, or anything you just said right now.” Ginny glanced away, but Harry simply shifted to face her. “Gin, look at me. Look at me,” and when she finally did, his heart clenched yet again to see her eyes tearing up again.
“Demelza called me and told me how they’d made her captain,” she choked out finally, “and I couldn’t help but wonder that if I’d stuck around, then they’d —“
“— have made you instead,” Harry finished, and brushed away her tears as more fell.
“And that thought made me feel so selfish, and-and guilty when James and Albus and Lils are my world, and- and you. All I wanted back then was to have more time with you, and I have that now. I finally have that now. This-this is all I’ve ever wished for. But, I-I can’t help but relentlessly think and think about that what-if, and everything else that could have been different with that what-if, and I can’t stop thinking about it.”
Harry was silent, his mind screaming at him to hold her close to him, make her tears go away, but this time, he didn’t think Ginny needed that. This time, he knew Ginny needed answers. And even if he couldn’t give them to her himself, he could help her find them. So if a chord had struck, he asked out of the blue. “Where are those three?”
“What?” Ginny frowned. “Oh, um… they’re at the Burrow. Apparently, they wanted to show their newly acquired…pet to their grandparents, but we both know it’s just going to be them trying to coerce Mum into making them a sweater for that fish.”
“Can you ask your mum if she can keep them at their place for a few hours?”
Ginny looked at him, confused, but she still nodded, taking out her phone from her back pocket. “Any particular reason?”
“Yeah,” Harry said, as he got up from the sofa, and offered her his hand. “We’re going swimming.”
…
“Doesn’t change the fact that I’m still a better mermaid than you,” Ginny quipped as she looked down at the water pool in front of them.
“I’m a merman. I don’t think I fit your criteria at all.”
“Yes, well, potato, potahto, mer...maid.”
Harry laughed, ducking his head, and Ginny cupped his cheek and turned his face, kissing him gently.
“Thanks for being my loyal listener,” she said, between kisses, and Harry smiled against her lips, wrapping a hand around her waist.
“Always.”
Her laugh echoed in the cave, as she stepped back and winked, before jumping into the pool, and if he could, he would have bottled that sound and gotten drunk on it.
“That’s the laugh,” he said softly, and followed.
…
The Ministry had caves just like the one near their house, almost at every other street in London. They were like Daedulus’ symbols, there where only those who knew where it was could see it.
Harry looked at Ginny again, fully knowing that even after all the times he’d seen her underwater, she still managed to take his breath away. Every time.
She was beautiful.
Her shimmering crimson tail glowed against the water, her hair floating around her in an angry halo, except it wasn’t angry. Not really. Here, Ginny seemed almost at peace.
“What are we doing here?” she asked, and Harry smiled at her, holding out his hand for her to take.
They were at the arena. The arena. They were at Hogwarts.
Lanterns guided their way, lighting their path, as they navigated the dark waters, the soft yellow light on the ocean floor, not much help, but it was, to its credit, useful. More in the sense of reassurance, than anything else.
In what was the oddest twist of the universe, mermen didn’t have tails. They could breathe and swim like their female counterparts, sure, but due to some unexplainable reason, they didn’t have tails.
That gave them a setback, sure, for mermaids were faster, swifter, and he had spent a major part of his Hogwarts years building up his speed and stamina in order to keep up with them.
It didn’t help his case that while underwater, mermaids were by far, the most beautiful creatures on the planet, their tails shining against the silver waters. On the other hand, they were just…them.
“You wanna tell me what’s happening here, Harry?”
Harry smiled at her, then let go of her hand, letting the lanterns guide their way. And then, as if a switch had been flipped, the world around them grew clearer, stiller and what had been darkness had instead turned to light.
“The first time I saw you here,” he said, swimming behind her, and keeping her hands on her shoulders, his voice in her ears, “the first thing I thought was: how the bloody hell was she not on the team yet?”
Ginny laughed, her voice dampened against the waves, but Harry could hear it as clear as day.
“The second thing I thought was that Ginny Weasley here, she was going to be a hell of a player. Someone I could never, ever, compare to.”
Harry turned her face to face him, and grinned. “That’s when I knew I loved you.”
Ginny shook her head, a knowing smile on her face, and Harry had a strange sense of accomplishment when he realized that he had been the one to put it there.
“Harry Potter, you’re one heck of a charmer, you know that?”
He shrugged, looking at her coyly. “I may have been told, once or twice.” He paused. But he didn’t stop. “You’re a lot of things to a lot of people, Gin, but back then, I always thought you were the Ginny Weasley, the fiercest chaser in business. So, whatever you decide to do, we’ll figure it out, just like we always do.”
Ginny gulped, and clutched his hand tightly, looking around the arena as if it was her first time seeing it.
In the end, this had always been her place.
This was where he knew she had to keep coming back.
And if she did, Harry knew he’d do everything in his power to make that happen. He’d quit being an Auror if he had to, stay with the kids, and he’d do it gladly if it meant more time with them. If it meant Ginny getting to follow her dream.
Fifteen years with Gin had made him realise dreams he’d never thought he’d have.
“I want to get back here,” Ginny admitted. “But, I don’t want to be away from them. You know how it was,” she turned to Harry, “back then, when I came home late from practice, all those hours away from James, from you. I don’t want that. That’s why I left, and I’ll do it a thousand times over if I had to.”
“But this, this is all I’ve wanted to do, since I was six and saw Bill fly for the first time. Now…I’m not so sure. But at the same time—”
“— you do,” Harry finished for her, and then grinned, facing her side. “It’s been fifteen years, but I am still trying to figure you out,” he said, as his hands cupped her cheeks, holding her steady, so that he could drink in the sight of her.
“I don’t think you ever will.”
But he’ll never stop trying.
Now she looked at him, several seconds later, brown to green, her to him, eyes glinting with the ghost of a smile. “I know what to do, Harry,” she said softly, and laughed. “And to think it was all for a damn dogfish.”
“I don’t suppose we still have room for it, do we?”
“We’ll have to see.”
Harry nodded, listening for a moment longer to the slight deafness of water around him, and her brown eyes, as radiant as the first time he’d seen them.
Then he kissed her. At her lips’ touch, Harry felt he was rediscovering them again.
“I love you,” Ginny mumbled, her hands tangled in his hair, her lips drawing him in for another kiss.
Harry smiled, knowing he’d never loved her more.
“I love you,” he said.

I watched episode 34 of Boruto and... I melted.
Look, how cute are these babies??? I really want to hug them.
Like, Sarada and Boruto's worries about how everyone might end up being friends after going their separate ways from the Academy, and how adorable and ridiculous the idea of Boruto catching the Eternal Crap while camping together??? Oh my God, how cute these kids are. I don't want them all to go to war. I want to set them on the couch, wrap them in a blanket, and give them hot chocolate.
Sumire could embrace her legacy in peace! I love this, and Nue is really cute too. And how excited Mitsuki suddenly appears and his friends are still not used to it, haha, even though it's been a few years since he's always done it.
Sure, the end of this episode when the fishing moment is a bit--well, flamboyant and these babies have too much power, but that's okay. I think on the one hand it's beautiful; you can use your powers for trivial things like catching legendary fish, rather than for harm.
This shows how different the Boruto generation and the Naruto generation are. Naruto's generation was born right at a time when war lurks in a dark corner. Boruto's generation doesn't. There are relationships within Naruto's generation based on violence; I think Konoha 12 (13, if you include Sai) is bound by war and lost their loved ones. The same thing happened to their parents and grandparents.
Even though the world isn't completely free of violence, children in these times of peace forge friendships who will buy the last yakisoba bun and go camping together. It's so sweet and hopeful.
I really hope there is no war in the future.
But, God, what an empty hope I have.
I liked the little trivia in this episode: that Sarada and Sumire were found together when Boruto asked them out.
It has more to do with BoruSumi fans and BoruSara fans out there. They seem to have some not always pleasant to each other, and sometimes they have insulting arguments for Sarada/Sumire. I'm more like Mitsuki, a supporter of BoruSara, haha, but I don't really care that much. I love the fact Sarada is friends with the other girls (how sweet Namida and Wasabi wanted to see Sarada after she got injured in the fight with Deepa), including Sumire, and there's no such thing as fighting over Boruto though it seems these two girls have feelings for him in the future. I like the fact that even though Boruto and Sarada quarrel a lot, they are also good friends. He helped her and vice versa, and universally, the kids in their generation had better teamwork.
I have the headcanon that Boruto and Sarada are really kind of good friends (are you telling me Naruto doesn't make his son go on a play date with the daughter of his two best friends?), but wouldn't admit that in public. They fight a lot, yes, and I guess the two of them don't mind getting into a physical fight (as it almost happened in episode 4), and given that they were both born geniuses with great raw abilities and were better trained than their dads, I could see they could be more destructive if they wanted to. I see them as people who are kind of earnest when they fight--like, if they had been put in the shoes of twelve-year-old Sasuke and Naruto, Valley of the End would have been utterly destroyed.
Like, there are times when they're around eight to nine years old where their fights are really frequent and get physical; say anything--hitting, kicking, biting, clawing. I think this happened because they realized that as they grew up, their personalities clashed, and it was the years when Naruto had just become Hokage, and Boruto really felt his absence, so he turned to some kind of...little rebellion (before starting doodling on his dad’s craved face)? I think they have some sort of screaming match from time to time, so by the time they get older and just 'bickering', their classmates get used to it and pretend to be deaf, haha. That doesn't mean they're enemies; I think they are quick-tempered and easy-provoked but also big-hearted and easy-forgiving. They're the kind of friends who fight in the morning and be mean to each other, but in the afternoon, they'll make up. I like to think this is driving Shino and Iruka crazy.

the untamed pairing: jiang cheng & wei ying, lan zhan/wei ying word count: 2549 summary: Wei Ying’s friends are at rock-bottom, and Wei Ying puts his life on hold to help them put theirs back together. To absolutely no one’s surprise except Wei Ying’s, his family goes with him. read on ao3

During family dinner, Wei Ying’s phone rings, cutting mother off mid-sentence.
Jiang Cheng cringes inwardly and his brother’s face goes two shades paler. They have guests over, so mother doesn’t do more than glare hatefully in Wei Ying’s direction.
She won’t make a scene in front of Yanli’s husband, or even Wei Ying’s fiancé—Jin Zixuan is everything Yu Ziyuan wants in a match for her daughter, and Lan Zhan’s family is one of the richest on the East Coast.
Lan Zhan is also willing to give as good as he gets. His eyes are already narrowing in mother’s direction, the tentative ceasefire of family dinner wobbling precariously beneath their feet as he perceives the great and unforgivable offense of insult to Wei Ying. A-Li resolutely tries to pick the conversation back up from where it lulled, with all the steely resolve of someone throwing herself into the path of a rampaging bull. Jin Zixuan has graduated from grimacing into his wineglass to gazing hopefully at the clock every three minutes.
Always willing to fall on the grenade, Wei Ying ducks his head meekly.
“Sorry, I thought I silenced it,” he says, the shape of a laugh in his voice even if he can’t manage to drag it all the way out. He’s rummaging his cellphone out of his pocket, presumably to turn it off as a gesture of good faith. “I’ll just…”
But his eyes catch on the screen, and something happens to his expression that Jiang Cheng has never seen before.
Wei Ying stands up, so abruptly his chair sails back with an awful screech, and excuses himself. Lan Zhan follows him out of the dining room without a single word or a backwards glance. That’s all it takes for mother to pick up a scathing tirade against Jiang Cheng’s good-for-nothing, ungrateful, waste-of-space brother.
He joins Jin Zixuan in watching the clock. Worry swims in the back of his mind like a school of startled fish.
#
Wei Ying’s apartment is really actually Lan Zhan’s apartment, but the two of them have been inseparable since they were fourteen, and it naturally followed that where one of them would live, so would the other. The place is ridiculous, modern and minimalist, and it would look like something out of a magazine if not for Wei Ying’s inevitable clutter. But even the stacks of books and magazines, and haphazard easels, and little jars of paints and loose brushes everywhere manage to make the place seem charming and lived-in instead of the horrible disaster tornado it rightly should be.
Jiang Cheng asked him once what the monthly rent was but Wei Ying looked so haunted by the question that Jiang Cheng decided he didn’t actually want to know.
They’re all crammed into the conversation pit, recovering from family dinner in the usual fashion. Jin Zixuan is much more likable when his tie is loose and he’s nursing a lukewarm beer.
A-Li is clinging to Jiang Cheng’s hand so hard he’s beginning to lose circulation but he’d sooner agree to amputate than he would shake her off.
“You’re on speaker, A-Qing,” Wei Ying says with mock-severity. “Keep it PG for the children in the room, please.”
“So Jiang Cheng and Jin Zixuan are there?” Wen Qing asks rhetorically.
Jin Zixuan sighs but doesn’t rise to it. Jiang Cheng snaps, “Listen, assholes,” partly out of half-hearted irritation, and partly to hear Wen Qing sigh the way she does when she doesn’t want to reward someone with a real laugh.
“Yanli and Lan Zhan are here, too,” Wei Ying says cheerfully. His tone doesn’t match how worried his eyes are. “This is a family-only meeting. So tell us what those texts were about.”
Jiang Cheng realizes right away why Wei Ying bailed on dinner.
There was an apartment fire. The Wens lost everything. Wen Ning is in the hospital with smoke inhalation and second-degree burns because he ran in to make sure their neighbors got out safely. All of their savings are wrapped up in putting Wen Qing through medical school. She’s adrift now in a way that Jiang Cheng has never been.
“There’s... we have an old house, somewhere out in the country. It was sold to my grandparents cheap, but they never got around to renovating it. It’s not even livable, just bare bones.”
A-Li starts crying the second Wen Qing does.
“It’s too much,” Wen Qing forces out. “I can’t do this on my own.”
Wei Ying, to his credit, actually does hesitate. A whole five seconds. And then he says, “I thought you were supposed to be my smart friend. Who said you were doing this on your own?”
He says it as easily as if it was an absolute given that he would turn his whole life around and upside down for her. All she had to do was call.
#
There is a minor disagreement between Jiang Cheng’s siblings.
“A-Li,” Wei Ying says, holding both of her hands in both of his own and looking deeply, imploringly, into her eyes. “You’re way too pregnant to fly.”
Her face crinkles alarmingly, eyes already red and puffy from recent tears. Jiang Cheng, Jin Zixuan and Lan Zhan tense in exactly the same way, at the same time.
“I won’t have you going all the way to California by yourself,” Yanli says in her most eldest-sibling tone of voice. “I won’t have it, A-Ying.”
“I am a grown-up,” Wei Ying points out gently, with all the wisdom of his twenty-four years. “I pay bills and have a job I hate and everything. And I won’t be by myself, I’ll have A-Qing and A-Ning.”
“And me, obviously,” Jiang Cheng grumbles. Wei Ying whips around to stare at him.
“Oh,” Yanli says, a blanket of relief rolling across her face. “Oh, of course.”
“You can’t,” Wei Ying hisses at him, looking more panicked now than he has all night. “Your mother—”
“Okay, first of all, don’t tell me what I can and can’t do,” Jiang Cheng bites back, prickly with worry for the Wens and worry for his idiot brother. “Secondly, you, going by yourself, is not an option. It’s off the table. It was never on the table. Stupid,” he adds, on principle.
Lan Zhan doesn’t contribute much to the conversation at this point but Jiang Cheng learned a long time ago that that doesn’t mean shit. Lan Zhan has more opinions than any three people combined, whether or not he chooses to voice them. There is no fucking way he doesn’t have thoughts about his fiance picking up and moving nearly three thousand miles away.
Maybe there’s some strange alternate timeline out there where he would be content to stay behind and let Wei Ying go off without him, but Jiang Cheng would bet his entire trust fund that that’s simply not happening here.
If ever there was a world where Wei Ying would be backed into a corner and forced to help the Wens alone, this world isn’t it.
#
There’s a minor disagreement between his siblings, and there’s a whole fucking nuclear fallout at home.
“I forbid it,” mother snaps. She’s livid, but she’s livid so much of the time that it started losing its edge a few years ago. “Absolutely not. I refuse to allow this family to lose face because you want to gallivant across the country for some charity case.”
Jiang Cheng sees it when Wei Ying’s posture changes. The dreamy raincloud gray of Wei Ying’s eyes hardens into heavy steel, and his spine stiffens, and his shoulders go back; the absolute opposite of his downcast self at dinner earlier. He’s willing to fight any impossible battle as long as it’s for someone else.
Jiang Cheng grew up looking up to him. He spent all of his formative years as Wei Ying’s little brother. That’s why he’s willing, too.
“The Wens aren’t a charity case,” he says. Not very loud, but he says it. It’s a lot more than he could have done when he was a kid.
“You don’t even know them! They’re just some random people on the Internet. They’re probably scamming you, and you’re both idiot enough to fall for it!”
That’s so untrue and unfair that Jiang Cheng doesn’t know how to argue for a moment. They’ve never met the Wens in person, but Wei Ying has been friends with them since he was ten. They mail each other presents for Christmas and birthdays. Jiang Cheng distinctly remembers calling Wen Qing for help with biochem homework, multiple times. Wen Ning always Skyped with Yanli when he was stuck on a recipe, the two of them cooking together from three time zones apart. They’re all tangled up in each other’s lives, comfortably, irrevocably.
Of course we know them, Jiang Cheng thinks, bewildered.
Out loud, he says, “They’re not scamming us. And we already told them we’re coming.”
Mother screeches and storms around the house and throws things, but she hasn’t actually hit either of them since they grew taller than her. She hasn’t been a source of real fear since Jiang Cheng started looking down at her instead of looking up. It’s mostly just miserable to be around her now.
He remembers that fear, though. It sticks to his body like a half-healed scar. It reminds him to flinch.
#
It’s early enough in the morning that it might as well still be nighttime when Jiang Cheng and his suitcases finally show up at Wei Ying’s building. He leaves his luggage in the lobby under the watchful gaze of the concierge and takes the private elevator up, keying in the code to his brother’s apartment.
The doors roll open to the living room. Lan Zhan is holding a tiny animal carrier in his hands, gazing at Wei Ying in an extremely gross and smitten way while Wei Ying discusses the upcoming trip with their pets. Pidan and Bao are not being particularly attentive, snuffling at his chin and chewing on a piece of his hair respectively.
“Diedie has decided to be stubborn and not listen to good sense,” Wei Ying is telling the rabbits seriously, “so you’re coming with me and ruining your life instead of being safe and comfortable here at home.”
“Baba is being dramatic,” Lan Zhan informs them in turn. “And also foolish, if he doesn’t realize that our home is wherever he goes.”
“This is the weirdest domestic scene I’ve ever walked into,” Jiang Cheng says loudly, since apparently the telltale ding of the elevator wasn’t enough to announce his presence. He has to interrupt before they do something horrible, like make out in front of him. It’s a constant fucking risk with these two. “Are we leaving or what?”
So the rabbits go into their crate with a frankly absurd amount of fanfare and Jiang Cheng helps wrestle the luggage downstairs. By then, the shuttle that Lan Zhan ordered is waiting for them at the curb.
He knows it isn’t going to be a vacation. Wei Ying’s friends are at rock-bottom, and Wei Ying has essentially put his life on hold to help them put theirs back together. It’s going to be hard work. It’s probably going to be painful, and a little bit scary.
Jiang Cheng is only involved because he chose to be, but it never occurs to him to choose anything else.
If this is where his brother is going, it’s probably the right place to go. And if it’s not, if the whole thing turns out to be a horrible mistake and he regrets all of it, then at least he’ll be in good company.
#
Wen Ning is out of the hospital by the time their plane lands, and he’s waiting with Wen Qing at the airport. Wei Ying, who by all accounts should feel as foggy and queasy as Jiang Cheng definitely does, drops his bags and sprints across the terminal towards them.
Jiang Cheng and Lan Zhan follow at a more reasonable human pace, possibly in part to give the friends a few moments together. The busy airport traffic moves around them like a river flowing around a rock.
Wen Ning is sobbing, almost a full head taller than Wei Ying but buried against him like the little brother he is. Wen Qing is leaning quietly against the two of them with her eyes closed, as if filling her reserves and shoring up her strength.
She’s the type of person who would be able to cow his mother with a single glance, Jiang Cheng thinks admiringly, and more efficiently than Lan Zhan ever could. She must have a spine built out of steel to be able to stand there without crumbling under the weight of what she’s lost.
And Wei Ying stands there holding them up, tireless and steady. He’s talking too quietly for Jiang Cheng to hear, saying something that makes Wen Ning nod against his shoulder. He’ll hold them up until the ground falls out from under his feet if he has to. Thankfully it’s more like three minutes.
Introductions aren’t necessary. They all just trade exhausted looks and move as a cohesive unit towards the doors.
Wen Ning starts to help with the bags, bandaged hands and all. Wen Qing and Jiang Cheng both snap at him before he can so much as touch a suitcase, and then he just waffles in place anxiously, like he doesn’t know how to person if he isn’t actively being helpful.
“Hold the kids,” Wei Ying says in the spirit of compromise, taking the pet crate from Lan Zhan and holding it out to Wen Ning instead.
Somehow, they shuffle everything out of the airport and into a rental car. Lan Zhan’s phone starts to blow up as soon as he turns airplane mode off, so he turns airplane mode back on and returns the phone to his pocket.
“My uncle has checked the credit card statement,” Lan Zhan says calmly. “My brother is handling it.”
“Poor Lan Huan,” Wei Ying murmurs.
“We have to call A-Li,” Jiang Cheng remembers with a jolt. He digs his own phone out. “She wanted us to call as soon as we landed.”
Everyone clusters in close for the FaceTime call with Yanli, who is tearful and hormonal and indignant about being left behind. Jiang Cheng begs her not to get into a fight with their mother over this. Yanli raises her chin and says, “We’ll see.”
It’s a very long drive to the estate. Wei Ying’s head sinks against Lan Zhan’s shoulder in an inevitable, unstoppable act of gravity. He falls asleep within minutes.
“You have to help me thank him,” Wen Qing says quietly, tapping anxious fingers against the steering wheel. “Help me figure out how to thank him.”
Jiang Cheng snorts, not unkindly. “What makes you think I know how?”
An entire childhood spent raising each other, protecting each other, annoying the shit out of each other, and there are still some things Jiang Cheng has no idea how to say to his brother in a way that he’ll understand. Like I’m sorry, and thank you.
Lan Zhan turns his head to the side, so that his cheek is pillowed against Wei Ying’s hair. Outside, the sprawling California countryside sprints past the windows, wild and golden under a relentless summer sun.

Chapter 27: The Blank Check
While the babies stayed in the medbay in intensive care I decided it was about time that my mother met Tony and Steve, and if that went well, Riley and Pietro too. It had been over six months since that meeting with her and dad, and with the babies all coming now, it wouldn’t be long until I would have the babies around me all the time and the decision of whether I let her meet my children or not would be a decision about whether I kept working to have a mother/daughter relationship with her at all. It was time to shit or get off the pot.
I invited mom to come up and have morning tea with me. Steve and Tony would be there too and if that went well FRIDAY could tell one of the others to bring Riley and Pietro down.
I spent that night with Wanda and the babies and after we had breakfast and she fed them I headed up to prepare. Everyone else had agreed to give us space and had gone to either visit Wanda and the twins or went down to the garden to play with the dogs and Riley and Pietro. I had the cooks prepare a spread of small cakes and finger sandwiches along with tea and coffee. When FRIDAY announced that she was coming up in the elevator I got up quickly.
“You both wait here,” I said to Tony and Steve.
Tony looked more nervous than I felt. I wasn’t sure why I was so nervous. I’d spent so much time with my mom lately, it wasn’t like being reunited with a stranger. I guess I just felt like this was it. Yes, I could cut her out if things turned toxic later, but if I introduced her to Riley and Pietro today, they’d go from having no grandparents to having one and I wouldn’t want to be the one that took that away from them.
“El,” Steve said gently. “Everything is going to be fine.”
I nodded and went to the elevator. It opened up just as I got to it and mom stepped out. She looked even more nervous than I felt. She had a couple of large gift bags in her hands and she looked around the entryway in awe. It was her first time in the penthouse, so I wasn’t exactly surprised she was impressed by it. “Elise, honey,” she said, kissing my cheek. “I heard that Wanda had her babies, so I bought some presents. And some for Riley and Pietro too.”
“That’s really nice, mom,” I said, leading her inside. “You didn’t have to do that.”
“I know. I just…” She didn’t finish her sentence but I knew what she was going to say. She really wanted to meet them.
I led her past the stairs and around the corner to the dining table where Tony and Steve were standing. Tony fidgeted on his feet as Steve stood with his hands behind his back. “Mom, this is Tony and Steve,” I said. “Steve, Tony, this is my mom, Jennifer.”
“Yes, of course,” mom said, as Steve stepped forward to shake her hand. “I know you both.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Jennifer,” Steve said, shaking her hand.
“Please, it’s Jenny,” mom said.
“Jenny,” he said with a nod. “Take a seat.”
Mom sat down and Steve and I sat near her. Tony sat a little further away on the other side of me.
“Have I met everyone now?” Mom asked.
“Yeah, these are the last two,” I said. “To be brutally honest with you mom, I held back with them because I figured if you were lying to me, these were the two you were using me to get to.”
She frowned and nodded. The information obviously hurt but she seemed to understand. “I get it. I’m glad you’re trusting me more.”
“While we’re all being brutally honest,” Tony said. “Not all of us wanted you to get involved in her life.”
She nodded again. “I know. And I might deserve that,” she said. “But I am grateful that I was given a chance. And I know you were involved with setting me up in the city and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to repay you for that.”
“So if I was to offer you a million dollars to leave us alone?” Tony asked.
Mom looked at him like she’d been hit by a truck. Her mouth opened and closed like a fish as she tried to grasp the full gravity of what he’d just said.
“I’m completely serious,” Tony said, pulling out his checkbook. “A million not enough? Five? Will five do it? How about ten?" He started to scribble out on his checkbook. "I’ll tell you what Mrs. Cooper, I’ll sign this and write your name right here, and you can fill in exactly the amount you think your daughter is worth. Because that’s what you wanted right? For her to marry rich and you and your husband could get your big fat dowry right? Well, she did just like you wanted. She got the richest. If my money isn’t good enough, maybe we can dip into the Asgardian pot.”
Mom looked at me in shock. “Is this what you want, Elise?”
I could feel myself tearing up and I wasn’t sure exactly what factor of what was happening right now was affecting me the most. Tony’s aggressive overprotectiveness or the fact I was a little worried that my mom would take it. Over the past few months, the thread that joined me to her had gotten thicker and brighter. The thought of her ruining all that by picking up the check hurt.
“Of course not,” I said.
“If it’s hurting you, I can leave you alone,” mom said. “I’ve hurt you enough. I don’t want the money. I want you to be okay.”
I started crying and Tony took the blank check and tore it into pieces. “That’s what I was hoping to hear.”
“Did you have to be so dramatic?” Steve scolded as he pulled me close and rubbed my back.
“Sorry, honey. I just wanted you to be sure,” he said.
I shook my head and my mom moved closer and took my hand. I looked into her eyes and she looked back at me seriously. “Elise, I am sorry for standing by so passively while your father hurt you the way he did. For raising you to believe you’d ever done anything to deserve it and that all you could expect in life was more of the same. I’m sorry it took me so long to accept your sexuality. If I could go back and change things I would. But I’m so proud of you. I’m proud of everything you’ve done. I might not understand it all, but you have a beautiful family that makes you happy and that is the least you deserve.”
I was weeping openly by the time she was done and launched myself into her arms. She held me close. The way I held Riley or Pietro when they were upset. The way moms are supposed to hold their daughters. The way I’d wish she’d hold me back when my father would hurt me. I didn’t feel resentful though. I felt grateful that after all this, I’d finally become the priority. I felt grateful that I had a chance to have my mom be my mom.
“FRIDAY?” I said, keeping my head buried in my mom’s neck. “Can you…?”
“Of course, Doctor Cooper,” she replied.
“Alright. How about we eat?” Steve said, rubbing my back. “Elise had very specific ideas about what morning tea was.”
“Right,” mom said, rubbing my back and letting me gently pull away from her embrace. “Of course. So tell me about the new babies.”
“They are precious,” Steve said. “The tiniest little things. Our other two were more premature, but they were bigger, I’m sure of it.”
“I don’t think so, Steve,” I giggled. “You’re just used to the bruiser that Riley has become.”
“Well whatever the case, they are so small they can each fit in the palm of Thor’s hand,” Steve said.
The elevator dinged and a moment later Clint appeared around the corner holding both Riley and Pietro’s hands. Mom turned in her chair and gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. “Is this… are they?”
“Mom,” I said, getting up and waving Clint over. “This is Pietro and Riley.”
She got down on one knee in front of them. “Hello, little ones, look at you,” she said, touching their faces. “Oh my goodness, you have your mother’s eyes.”
Riley looked up at Clint. “Who’s dis?”
“That’s your grandma,” Clint said, as mom started laughing.
“We don’t dot a gwandma,” Pietro said, eyeing his grandmother suspiciously.
“I’ve been away. I’m so sorry,” she said. “I’m back now. I have presents.”
“Pwesents?” Pietro asked.
“Is dat cake?” Riley added, pointing at the table.
Mom laughed as Clint helped her back up. “You come open your presents and have some cake. I really want to hear all about you both.”
They ran over to the table excitedly and climbed up on the chairs. Mom picked up the present bags by her chair and looked at me, tears pricking her eyes. “Thank you, Elise,” she said quietly.
“You’re welcome,” I said. “If you would like we can go see Rose and Sarah on your way out.”
“I would love that,” she said. “Thank you.” She turned back to the kids and gave them the gift bags. "I wasn’t sure what your favorite things were. So I hope you like what I got you. You’ll have to show me the kinds of things you like best though.”
The kids began opening their presents and mom got them each a cupcake and some milk and gave it to them. I let FRIDAY know the others could come up if they wanted. Steve wrapped his arm around me as I watched my mom fussing over the kids. “Is this how you hoped it might be?” He whispered.
I nodded and turned, cuddling into him. “Better,” I said.
“Well, sweetheart,” he replied. “You deserve it. I hope you know that.”
I nodded, and for once, the trauma of my past didn’t raise its head to tell me otherwise. This time, I completely believed that I did.

A Fast Pass To Love
Pairing: Jemily
Summary: Emily had never been to a theme park, much less Disney Land before. JJ decides to the change that with a week long extravaganza, but some fun things happen on day 1...
WC: 4.7k words
For Mom, Mama, and the rest of the kids of the wack house. (i love all yall) @dykejareau @prentitss @dragisthegame @bridget19 @jay-writes-jemily @ssa-urnansironingboard
--------------------
“Emily, the first rule of theme parks is to wear comfortable shoes and no short shorts. You’re going to get a sunburn.” JJ sat on the bed, watching her towel-laden girlfriend look through her suitcase.
“But these ones make me look cute. Fine, I guess I’ll just have to wear these ripped jeans and my green flannel with the graphic tee. Are you all ready?” Emily finished rifling through her things and slipped into the bathroom.
“Yeah, I’m all dressed. I just need to put on my mascara, hat, and shoes. We still have like 20 minutes before we leave, so just go according to that.” JJ tugged at her watch and moved to the edge of the bed, leaning towards the wall mirror to apply her mascara.
Emily spends little time in the bathroom, zipping through her routine and deftly putting on her clothes. She washed her face and put on moisturizer before throwing open the door and reentering the quaint bedroom. Their room had a view of the buzzing city below but was drab with bland walls and sparse artwork. A king bed decorated the middle of the room positioned directly opposite the magnanimous flat screen. The room may have been drab, but its accessories all but made up for it.
“Your mascara face is cute,” Emily announced, watching her girlfriend carefully apply the product, her lips just barely parted.
“Oh, really?” JJ finished her left side and paused, turning to look back at the brunette. She grinned at the devilish smile on her girlfriend’s face and faced the mirror once more.
“Yeah, I think you should do it more often.” JJ looked at Emily through the mirror and playfully rolled her eyes. She then felt the bed sink under Emily’s weight as the brunette climbed on from the other side.
Emily inched forward, careful to not disrupt JJ’s mascara. She knew from experience that it was not a good choice. Coming up behind the blonde, Emily snaked her hands around JJ’s waist. She set her head gingerly on JJ’s shoulder, beaming at their reflection. This trip was a first for her and she couldn’t think of anyone better to do it with. After another minute, JJ brought the tube down, carefully sealing it and setting it off to the side. She leaned back against Emily and placed her own hands on top of hers. “Babe, come on. I’m done. Are you all set with the backpacks and stuff?” She spoke quietly, relaxing into Emily’s embrace. No matter the time, she always found sanctuary in the brunette’s arms.
“But how about, we just sit here? I don’t want to move.” Emily fake pouted.
“Sure, if you want to miss the water rides and all of the food shops,” JJ answered calmly, knowing that Emily simply needed a little incentive to get moving.
“Oh, never mind. Let’s go. I think everything is packed. Here, I have the list so we can go over it.” Emily fished around in her pocket for a quick second before pulling out a neatly folded piece of lined paper.
JJ chuckled and moved to grab the dark backpack from the edge of the bed. Grabbing its zippers, she opened it quickly and waited expectantly for Emily. The brunette muttered the first part of the list as she quietly checked with herself for the things that she was responsible for.
“Okay, I have all of the snacks and the water. Do you have the medkit, the socks, the fresh shirt and pants for us both, and sunscreen?” She repeated each item slowly, double-checking with the blonde. The method was tried and true, and once they’d gotten through it all, they were out the door.
————————————————————
“Never? You’ve got to be kidding. There’s no way. It’s not possible.” JJ sat on the carpet on top of her folded legs. She had an incredulous look, not understanding how what Emily was saying could be true.
“Nope. I’m serious, never. Mother just was never the kind for theme parks. Plus, she always had a stick up her ass so because she didn’t want to go, I couldn’t either. She would just find extra lessons to stick me in.” Emily sipped her dry, red wine.
“It was odd never knowing what got kids so excited at theme parks. I mean, what’s so cool about waiting in line for hours on end just to be thrown around in a metal car?”
“Oh. My. God. I cannot believe you! That’s it. You, Emily Prentiss, are coming with me on a trip to Disney World. We are doing a full week-long trip so that you can see the magic that so many kids that go there, love. I used to go there on school trips and once with my grandparents. It’ll be perfect.” JJ turned back to her wine, missing the love that was so apparent in Emily’s expression.
“Perfect, just like you?” Emily couldn’t stop herself from the sappy comment. She was tipsy and over the moon in love with JJ.
“Yes, you sap. You really are a hopeless romantic. Pen was right.”
“Of course she was. Pen is the “All-Knowing Goddess” and she never fails to live up to it.”
“You know that I like you very much, right?”
“Always, I’m irresistible.”
“Oh my god, no, you’re insufferable.”
“You love that about me.”
“Got me there.”
————————————————————
The bus ride was turbulent but neither minded. Emily was jittery with excitement and JJ was calmly seated. The brunette had the map to the area that they were visiting in her hands. To her, it looked like someone had drawn spaghetti and put random locations for things on it. But, despite her struggle, Emily refused to ask for help. It was a pride thing. That, and she had told JJ she could do it. She couldn’t go back on her word now. Watching Emily’s internal struggle was amusing for JJ, knowing that the woman would never be able to figure out the map.
“Ah, Magic Kingdom. This is our stop, Jen,” Emily stated boldly with hopes that JJ couldn’t tell that she had no idea where to go next.
“Alrighty, Map Master, where to next?” JJ raised her eyebrows at Emily as they stepped off the shuttle. This is going to be interesting.
“Uh, we can take a left here and go to the Hulk part. Wait, no, that would be a right. Hold on, I know what I’m doing.” Emily’s eyebrows furrowed as she tried to make sense of the winding paths on the page in front of her.
“Sure you do. Take all the time you need.” JJ stood by her, arms folded in amusement.
“Okay, follow me.” Emily faked her confidence, starting off in the left direction. She silently prayed that wherever they ended up was somewhat decent.
After nearly an hour, neither the Hulk ride nor the other options that she had suggested were visible. They had wandered up to the Adventureland area, currently standing in front of what looked like the show’s bar. They had managed to stop by a couple of the drinks stands and buy things there, but the rides that Emily had wanted were nowhere to be found.
“Do you want my help?” JJ finally chipped in, ready to let Emily stop stressing over the godforsaken map.
“No!” Emily answered immediately, but instantly remembered that she was getting them nowhere. She followed up with another answer, this time more quiet. “Yeah. But only because this stupid map is super confusing and whoever designed it needs to take a map drawing class.”
JJ chuckled and took the reins. From there, they walked for a few short minutes before arriving at the ride that Emily had been searching for. She had just missed the pathway and taken a wrong turn. The blonde beamed over at her girlfriend, who playfully rolled her eyes.
Weaving through the crowds of people seemed much easier with JJ in the lead. They made their way through several rides, including Splash Mountain. The subsequent gift stores that they visited were very attractive as well. Emily and JJ were not immune to their charms, buying a Stitch plushie that both felt was perfect. Its soft, fuzzy texture and inviting look made it exactly what they wanted. Emily even had the thought that they could pass it down to their kids. It would be a memento for the day, one that she knew she would never forget.
————————————————————
JJ and Emily came up to a small area in front of the castle. Emily’s stomach had growled about three times in the past 30 minutes and they still hadn’t gotten any food. She hadn’t eaten more snacks because JJ had asked her to wait for the Dole Whip that she wanted to try. JJ, on the other hand, was tired. She hadn’t done the whole theme park shebang in years, forgetting the physical toll it took.
She let out a deep sigh, pausing to lean against the partition. A few steps in front of them, two Disney princesses were having a lively conversation. Cinderella, who was a bit taller than Belle, was blushing at whatever the other princess had just told her. Their giggles barely reached Emily and JJ’s ears. Emily smiled at the lighthearted demeanor of the women. They weren’t currently in character, but their costumes and attitude alone were enough to make the Disney World experience magical for children.
Cinderella looked over Belle’s shoulder and caught Emily’s eye. The woman beamed and waved. The gleeful energy radiated off of her. Belle turned around upon seeing what Cinderella was doing. She also waved at the couple, getting a nonchalant wave from JJ and Emily.
JJ pulled out her phone, looking up if the restaurant she had wanted to go to for dinner was still open. The sun’s rays beat down on the couple but JJ and Emily had learned to weather it after years of travel. As she was scrolling to find the link to their website, Emily and JJ heard a squeal in their vicinity. Both of their heads jerked upwards, searching for the source of the outburst.
Their eyes landed on a child that looked roughly 7 years old, dressed in a Belle costume that was similar to the princess that was standing next to them. Poofy fabric and dazzling sequins made the little kid’s gown look extravagant. The petticoat twinkled and flew back against the air as the young princess made their way up to the adult Belle. JJ and Emily didn’t realize what had happened until the princess tugged on the older Belle’s dress, head tilted back to showcase eyes full of wonder.
“You look just like me! I’m princess Belle.” Their voice was high-pitched, sounding almost like an animation in real life. “Mama, look! It’s princess Belle! We look the same!”
The child turned back to talk to a group of people. Emily and JJ’s eyes followed the young princess’ and saw a small group of people. Two women stood close together, the taller one’s arm placed on the other shoulder. On their right, a child had one of the women’s hands in her grasp. She looked between both Belle’s, excitement apparent in her expression, their mouth forming a little “O”. They were dressed as Rapunzel, the light and shimmery purple of the dress popping against their darker, red hair. Accent spots of gold were scattered around the costume, shining amidst the entire ensemble.
The women were not in costume, but their outfits were nonetheless stylish. The taller woman had on a light beige shirt, its sweater-like fabric tucked into light-wash blue jeans that were ripped at the knees. The ensemble was completed with a dark leather jacket that was sleek, not having many embellishments. Beside her, the woman that was holding Rapunzel’s hand was in a sundress. Its material was light and flowy. Patterned lavender flower bouquets were spread across the dress. It had a deep neckline, offset by the floppy sun hat on her head.
Seeing those women and children made JJ’s heart soar. They were exactly what she had pictured in her head of Emily and herself, far off in the future. Getting a glimpse of what that life held for them was overwhelming. In one sweeping motion, the blonde turned Emily’s head to the side and kissed her. Her other hand laid on the brunette’s waist, pulling her closer so that she might never have to let go. When they eventually pulled apart, Emily looked at her with amazement. She didn’t know what had given JJ the sudden need to kiss her, but she wasn’t mad about it.
“Any reason for that kiss, milady?” Emily added the joking lilt to her voice, hoping to understand what had overcome her girlfriend.
“Just, that you’re perfect. Also, those kids, they remind me of what I want our life to be like. Not now, but later in the future. It’s just everything I imagined, and I can’t wait for us to be there.” JJ’s eyes were wide and doe-like, melting Emily’s heart on the spot. She brought her hand up to rest on JJ’s cheek, her thumb brushing against it lightly.
“OH MY GOD. YOU CAN LIKE PRINCESSES TOO?” The women all but jolted up when the shrill voice broke through their bubble.
They turned to the origin of the sound, eyes once again falling on the miniature Belle. Their finger was pointed at the couple. A dazzling smile sat on their face, the jubilation barely containable. Emily recovered from the shock and realized what was going on first. She knelt down, making eye contact with the child.
“Of course you can. You like princesses, princes, kings, queens; whatever you want. Look, you see her?” Emily pointed back at JJ, waiting for the little princess to nod. “I really like her, and she happens to be my queen.” She watched the child’s eyebrows raise, laughing softly at their mirth.
“Wait, can I tell you a secret?” She leaned in as did the kid, their ear tilted towards Emily.
“Well, actually the thing is, I love her and I’m gonna tell her tonight. What do you think? Is it a good idea?” Emily smiled while the thought of telling JJ she loved her filled her with warmth.
The young princess stood back up, switching glances between JJ and Emily. They noticed the way that JJ looked at Emily. Even if the brunette couldn’t see her girlfriend, JJ looked at her like she held the world in her hands. Luca, the child, started jumping up and down.
“Yes! Yes! Do it! Do it!” Enthused, Luca turned to the grownup Belle. They switched glances from Cinderella to Belle, deciding whether or not to ask the question on their mind. “Is she your princess too?”
Luca pointed to Cinderella, asking Belle. The woman in the leather jacket took a couple of steps forward, reducing the distance between herself and Luca. She placed her hand on the kid’s shoulder and looked over at the women gratefully. Emily giggled and so did JJ. Belle, shifting her eyes from Cinderella to Luca and her mother, snapped back into character to answer the question.
“Why yes, she is. We have our own castles too, so whenever we can go to see the Fairy Godmother and the Beast whenever we want! You have to admit, she’s pretty cute too.” The princess snuck a glance back at their girlfriend, excitedly spinning the tail of their “fairytale romance”.
Luca gasped, their expressions amusing everyone around them once more. However, this time they turned all the way around to face the other woman and little kid. Stopping to think for a second, Luca rested their head in their hand. Coming to the conclusion that they wanted, Luca beamed and pointed at the little Rapunzel. Everyone’s eyes followed their finger.
“B! B! B! You’re Rapunzel and I’m Belle! You’re a princess and I love you!” The child that had hung back’s face lit up with the statement.
“Oh my god! We are! I love you too!” The young princess was practically shouting across the short distance between them and Luca.
The words sounded funky because of the slight Irish twang that pervaded her accent but melted everyone’s hearts regardless. Wasting no more time, B broke out into a sprint towards Luca who did the same. They collided mere seconds later, wrapped in the tight hug. Around them, “Mama” returned back to the other woman. Both children stood wrapped in each other’s arms, delighted at the realization that they had come to. It was the innocence and naivety that made that moment so much more beautiful.
After nearly a minute, B and Luca let go and looked back at the two women that they had come with. Emily and JJ noticed their stance, for example, how the woman in the sundress so slightly leaned into the other’s hold. They watched the way that “Mama” looked at her, noticing the softness that couldn’t be categorized as anything but love in her eyes. They caught on to the way that the couple’s hands linked, their fingers entwined behind their backs, almost as if to hide it.
During those moments, JJ and Emily didn’t notice the two children walking up to them. The couple only broke their gaze when Emily felt a light tug on her flannel. Looking down, she saw B and Luca standing with their hands joined together. Wondering what else the children had to say, she playfully raised her eyebrows to nonverbally ask them to talk.
“My name is Luca, and this is B, my princess. They’re really pretty and I love them a lot. I think you’re really cool and that you should hang out with us sometime. Bring her too.” Luca spoke and pointed at JJ as they finished their sentence.
The two adults joined the children, smiling.
“I guess since Luca and B have already made their introductions, we should as well. I’m Lauren and this is my friend Hannah. Luca is my kid and B is theirs.” The woman in the leather jacket looked down at Luca and B, and then over to Hannah.
“I’m Emily and this is my girlfriend, JJ. It was nice to meet you. You as well, B and Luca. Maybe, we can hang out the next time we meet. Enjoy your trip princesses.”
With that the 6 people parted, leaving Belle and Cinderella back at their post. Emily and JJ made their way to get Dole Whip. They made a few pit stops along the way, picking up souvenirs that were just tacky enough. It started when Emily caught JJ trying on a pair of rainbow Mickey Mouse Ears. She admired her girlfriend from afar, watching her admire the way the headband sat on top of her blonde hair. Emily walked up behind JJ and wrapped her arms around her waist.
“I am so buying you that. You look so cute.”
“Only if you get one too. We have to be matching or Pen won’t let you hear the end of it.”
“I guess you’re right. I would look good in that. You think she’d let it slide if we got her something too?”
“She might, but I wouldn’t,” JJ smirked at their reflections.
“Okay, okay. How about I get us some shot glasses and these and we call it even”
“Deal.” Emily picked up the shot glasses, with decorations and prices that reminded them that they were having the time of their life in Disney World.
Now, with their Stitch plushie, shot glasses, and rainbow headbands, JJ and Emily looked like proper tourists. Emily usually preferred to blend in with the locals and stay low. The more untraceable, the better for her. But somehow, standing JJ in their themed gear and countless souvenirs, the memories seemed worth it. She had her arm pulled tightly around JJ’s waist, feeling the blonde’s body heat against her own.
The sun had begun to set. It left the sky painted with several different shades and tints of pink and orange; the blue having faded away in the last hour. Each color created a mosaic-like glow down on the people as they prepared for the fireworks. JJ had raved about the fireworks show since that first night that Emily had confessed of her inexperience. The brunette was still slightly hesitant but decided that if JJ loved it, then it was good for her too. She pressed a soft kiss into JJ’s hairline as they weaved through the crowds of people to find a good spot for the show.
The last of the sunset passed rather quickly, leaving the crowds under the luminescence of the park’s decor. The rides that they had wanted to go on were already over, so this was the last thing on the first day’s itinerary. Emily was just about to ask JJ when they should expect the show to start when an employee in a decorated, Disney jacket approached the crowd with a megaphone. They spoke loudly and clearly, reciting memorized instructions on the show that was to begin in 2 minutes and the manners that the crowd had to use for it.
Promptly as announced, the fireworks began in 2 minutes. The display was gorgeous. Each little buildup created a unique pattern of firework in the sky. Emily found her attention captured, the magnificence making her heart glow. Everything around her was too much. She felt overwhelmed with love and remembered the secret that she had told Luca. It was now or never.
“Hey, Jen?” She felt the blonde’s weight shift from where she was, tightly tucked into Emily’s body.
“Yeah?” Emily’s neck tickled with the puff of air from JJ’s words.
“Today was perfect. Every day, actually, is perfect with you. I don’t know how you do it, but you make the world seem magical. Everywhere I look, I see something beautiful, and with our jobs, I didn’t even think that was possible. Being with you, made me realize that the world is good and can be good. It made me want to be good, better actually, just for you. So I guess, what I’m trying to say is that I love you. I love you and everything about you. You opened my eyes, Jen. I don’t think I’ll ever have the words to thank you enough for it.”
JJ held back tears at Emily’s words. The pure emotion that she heard in the woman’s voice was enough alone to make her sob. Her heart felt like it was glowing. Emily had that effect on her since they had met. Being here, standing by her side felt surreal. They were at Disney World, arguably the “most magical place on Earth”, but JJ thought differently. To her, anywhere by Emily instantly became enchanting. She didn’t waste a second in replying.
“I love you too, Emily. You were one of the best things that ever happened to me. I could shout it from the rooftops, but fireworks at Disney World work too.” JJ smirked and hugged Emily tighter. “I had dinner reservations at a restaurant that I came to as a kid for after this. Are you up for it? I just think that it would be a nice way to end today.”
“Of course. I was going to suggest take out for dinner, but that sounds so much better. We can head out as soon as the show is over.” Emily answered her and then turned her head to look up at the illustrious show once more.
They stayed for the show, even clapping when the fireworks subsided and denoted the end of the program. JJ and Emily sauntered through the flow of people, looking for an exit. On the way there, Emily stopped them in front of the magnanimous tree. Its decorations shined strongly against the dark, night sky, twinkling almost as brightly as the stars. Placing JJ strategically against the fence, she snapped a few photos. Jumping when she felt a light tap against her shoulder, Emily turned to see Hannah’s wide smile. They gestured for her phone, asking if Emily wanted a picture of the couple.
“Why don’t you hop in there next to her? I can take the picture of the two of you.” Emily obliged them, taking quick strides to join her girlfriend’s side. Their smiles were radiant.
Only two pictures had been taken before purple and yellow things ran out from behind Hannah. The couple didn’t realize what was happening until JJ nearly doubled over with the force that collided into her side. She looked down to see B, and the kid was clinging to her shirt. JJ didn’t have time to respond before the same thing happened to Emily. Luca had made their way to surround the brunette. Both kids had a mischievous smile on their faces, adoration in their eyes.
“Oh, I am so sorry. Kids, come back here. Let these two lovely ladies have their pictures.” Lauren’s voice rang out from behind her friend.
“No, it’s okay, let them stay. After all, we have to take pictures with the princesses in Disney World. Come in close for the picture guys!” JJ laughed and responded, earning delighted agreement from B, Luca, and Emily.
“You two are too kind.” Hannah shook their head and readjusted the phone’s camera angle.
The family took their leave of JJ and Emily, leaving the happy couple smiling as they made their way out of the theme park. The journey to their car was long, but it felt like two minutes to the women as they talked about their adventures of the day. It was a sweet resolution to a long day of fun. Arriving at Rigatello’s right on time, JJ and Emily were seated with haste.
JJ was buzzing with the high of their confession, grasping Emily’s hand tightly. Her mind was zipping with memories that they had made today. She had come to this theme park as a kid, and Emily had rejuvenated that childhood passion that she had for places like it. It reminded her of the fun that she used to have with Roslyn. All that confirmed was that Emily was perfect for her, through and through. Emily couldn’t keep her eyes off of JJ. The baby blues were reminders of how JJ was changing her view on the world, one step at a time. The blonde was the key to her future, and maybe one day they could have kids just like B and Luca. The thought of their own children was exhilarating to Emily, knowing that she had almost given up the hope of motherhood before JJ. Those kids were goofs, but so cute. We are definitely making yearly trips to Disney with our own, and maybe I’ll be able to convince JJ to dress up with them.
The couple was making light conversation when a short, stockier waiter approached their table. Their face was lit up and animated, the enthusiasm apparent in the waiter’s words. Taking a good look at JJ and Emily, Pablo, as the waiter had introduced herself, immediately began listing off items that they believed the pair would like. The interaction was short and lively, Pablo off soon to get their waters. Not a few minutes had passed before they returned once more, however they had some extra beyond what JJ had ordered.
“Don’t worry, it’s on the house. You two deserve it. Y’all are a beautiful couple. Thank you for coming to Rigatello’s. Now, do you know what you want to order?”
“I’ll have the beef cannelloni and she’ll have the chicken scampi? Yeah, one chicken scampi for her.” Emily gave out their orders and soon they were left alone again.
The food was decadent and the wine, which they learned was a house specialty later, was rich and smooth. JJ and Emily talked about kids, what Emily loved about the day, and the future. That day had been their first day of seven, and Emily had already fallen in love with Disney World. They left great compliments with the waiter and went on to their hotel. The women dragged themselves into bed after changing into their pajamas. Both were asleep within seconds of their heads hitting the pillow, arms wrapped tightly around each other.

Carolina
Marine Biologist AU that no one asked for but I wrote because I miss my second home. Probably two parts.
Very brief mention of a family members death
"Hi welcome to-" Leo stopped his normal speech when he was met with the two most gorgeous men he had ever laid eyes on. "Welcome to the Fort Fisher aquarium. I'm your tour guide Leo and this is Regulus." He somehow managed to snap out of his shock even though the greeting was all muscle memory.
“Two guides. Must be special." The red haired one laughed a laugh that made doves fly. "I'm Finn." He shook their hands.
"That and both of us wanted a break from sticky children trying to swim with the sharks and gators." Reg smiled.
"Sharks? Like ocean sharks? And ocean alligators?" The shorter one asked in shock and a lot more than a sprinkle of fear.
'Fuck he's adorable' Leo swore internally. "Alligators are typically fresh water reptiles but if you are asking if they are real sharks and alligators, than no. They're they’re hyperealalistic mechanical sculptures." He kept a straight face.
"Cute and funny." Finn flashed him a smile after another angelic laugh.
Leo had to remind himself to not die right then and there.
“Don't worry, Logan" Finn told the other one. "I'll protect you from the scary teeth, baby."
Now Leo was sad.
“Oh yeah, right after you stop ogling over our hot tour guide."
Now Leo was slightly less sad and confused.
“Actually." Regulus pulled out his phone. "Our manager just texted and said he needs someone in the gift shop. Have fun." He left with a pat on Leos back.
Leo glared as he walked away, they didn't get texts from anyone for any assignment. Hence the walkie talkies on their belt loops.
“So, follow me and we can start the tour." +++
“This is our 235,000 gallon tank." Leo stood over top of the two story tall tank. In here we have our eagle rays, round stingrays, whiptail stingrays, hammerhead sharks, sandbar sharks, sand tiger sharks, hammerhead sharks. We also have two moray eels and an abundance of fish including shanks and groupers. And a personal favorite, Sheldon the green sea turtle.” Leo stood on the rusted grate with ease as if he didn’t care about the hammerhead only a few feet away from his toes.
“Um, this is great and all but can we not stand on the edge without a railing?” Logan stayed as far away as he could an the 2 feet wide walkway.
“You’re completely safe don’t worry.” Leo flashed a reassuring smile.
“Okay yeah but-”
“Stop being a baby, Lo.” Finn poked his side.
“I’m sorry I’m scared of falling into a 23 foot deep death cylinder filled with sharks.” Logan defended himself.
“Alright we can go officially start the tour.” Leo laughed. “But we do have to walk across the tank.”
“We what?” Logan asked.
“It’s okay. Just don’t look down.” He decided to risk a wink.
“Listen to the hot guide, babe.” Finn kissed Logan’s cheek. “I’ll hold your hand.”
“I love you, Harzy. But I do not trust you enough to not try and scare me.”
“I promi- no I don’t. Fine.” Finn whined when his plans were spoiled.
“Alright, let’s go.” Leo laughed.
They got across the walkway with only a few exaggerated wobbles to scare Logan. And a very grumpy Logan when Leo told him there was another way around the tank.
+++
“So here we have our bald eagle Maverick.” Leo walked up to the opened enclosure. “He’s five years old and has been here since he was two. He was found on the side of the road nearly starved after being hit by a car. If you look at his left wing you can see it juts out a little. That is due to the bones fusing together incorrectly and it makes him unable to ever fly again.” He recited the well known script.
“Poor baby” Finn stuck his bottom lip out.
Leo blinked away the urge to kiss the sad look off his face.
“If we walk up here you can see the aquariums prized possession.” Leo smiled. “Luna the albino Alligator.”
“Oh my god.” Finn hurried over to the glass.
“She looks like you, lover. Pale as fuck.” Logan teased.
“Luna is one of just 100 recorded albino alligators world wide.”
“World wide?” Logan asked in shock.
“Yeah. It’s an extremely rare genetic mutation and due to the inability to hide from predators they’re numbers are next to zero. Very soon they’ll be no more albino gators.”
“What happened to that alligators toes?” Logan pointed at the dark green alligator.
“That’s Gantur. He still hasn’t learn that Luna’s the leader.”
“She bit them off?” Logan’s eyes went wide.
“Don’t underestimate her. Ready to continue?”
+++
“This is my favorite exhibit.” Leo’s face lit up as they walked up to the touch pool.
“Touch anything as long as you use two fingers and don’t pick anything up.”
“Are those stingrays?” Finn pointed towards the end of the touch pool.
“Yeah. They’re still babies and their stingers have been trimmed. Their barbs are like thumbnails and can be clipped monthly without any harm.”
“What are those?”
Leo’s face lit up impossibly more.
“These are horseshoe crabs.” He held onto one of the dark greenish brown banjo shaped creature.
“They are also called living fossils due to the fact that they haven’t evolved at all since the dinosaurs, around 450 million years. It’s mostly due to the fact that they didn’t need anything added or taken away for survival. They were made perfectly. Now their tails.” He pointed to the long stick like end as it moved around with the help of what looked like scaley gills. “Most people look at it and think it will hurt. But it won’t hurt at all. They are extremely, extremely clumsy and use the long tail to flip themselves back over.”
“Sounds like you.” Finn kissed Logan.
“Rude.” Logan scoffed.
“Horseshoe crabs aren’t actually crabs at all. They’re actually more closely related to scorpions and spiders. Watch.” Leo smirked and flipped it over.
There were five pairs of claws moving around as the gills moved up and down like abs, causing the tail to move with it.
“Here-” Leo grabbed Logan’s hand, he tried hard to ignore the way his skin burned. “Touch it.”
“Oh no I’m okay to just look.”
“Come on, just touch it.” Leo begged. “Please just touch it.” He pouted.
“Oh my fuck you’re adorable.” Logan voiced Leo’s exact same thoughts from before.
“Here” he blushed and bit his lib to contain the smile. “Touch it.” He guided Logan’s hand down to the center of the legs, desperately trying to not think about how close they were. Logan’s t-shirt touching his blue polo shirt with his name stitched in the side. The way he could feel Logan’s breathing against his side, the way his leg was pressed between Logans le- stop it.
“Eww that feels weird” Logan’s laughed raised goosebumps on his arm.
“You’re touch his mouth.”
“Ew ew ew ew” Logan pulled his hand away quickly as Finn cackled.
“You asshole” Logan laughed as he pushed Leo lightly.
“Sorry, but it’s funny.” Leo laughed.
“You are now my second favorite person on earth.” Finn put a hand on Leo’s shoulder. “Oh my god I’m crying.” He wiped his eyes.
“Wouldn’t mind if he stayed our favorite.” Logan smiled.
Leo blushed and moved onto the regular view of the huge tank.
+++
“So how’d you get a job here?” Logan asked Leo as they walked around.
“I’ve lived on the island my whole life and started volunteering here when I was 13.” He explained. “I’m going to UNCW for marine biology. Are you two just here for vacation? Even though it’s April.”
“No. We’re actually moving down here. My grandparents owned the arcade on the boardwalk and left it to me once they passed.” Finn told him.
“Oh. I’m sorry about their passing.”
“It’s okay. Didn’t really know them at all.”
“Well I’ll hopefully see you around.”
“Maybe you don’t have to hope.”
Leo tilted his head in confusion.
“We were just wondering if you would want to show us around the island.” Logan told him. “We’ve only been here for a few days and this is the first place we’ve been to. Not even the beach.”
“Oh that’s nearly a sin.” Leo teased. “I’d love to show you guys around. I get off in an hour.”
“Perfect.” Finn said happily. “Do you want to drive over to our house and then switch cars or do you need to change?”
“That’ll work. There’s a locker room and since there’s next to no one here considering the time of year Evan will probably let me leave early.” Leo couldn’t hide his smile as they walked into the brightly lit gift shop.
Logan let out a loud gasp and ran over to the 6 foot long jellyfish stuffie. “I want it.”
“It’s tentacles are going to strangle you, love.” Finn shook his head.
“Kinky” Logan wiggled his eyebrows.
Finn scoffed as three other people in the quiet store laughed.
“Oh hi again Regulus.” Logan smiled at the black haired man who was sitting on the countertop beside the register tossing a brightly colored foam ball with turtles on it between his hands.
“Hey” He smiled back.
“What’d they need help with down here?” Finn looked around the empty room cluelessly.
“He didn’t help me?” The girl beside him raised an eyebrow. “Hi, Rue by the way.” She waved before going back to glaring at Regulus. “Did Evan tell you to help me?”
“No.” Reg smirked. “Just wanted to leave Leo alone with his crushes.”
“Reg” Leo pushed him.
“It’s mutual.” Finn said and Logan nodded.
“Okay. I’m gonna go ask Evan if I can get off early so I can show you a tour of the island and then get changed and I’ll be back down.” Leo changed the subject quickly.
“They’ll show you a tour of their bedroom and then get you off early.” Rue said quietly but not quiet enough. Leo shoved her hard as Logan, Finn, and Reg cackled.
+++
“So are we ready?” Leo walked back down in shorts and a UNCW t-shirt.
A cropped UNCW t-shirt.
“Uh- yeah. Yeah. Um, yeah.” Finn stuttered failing to make it look like he wasn’t staring at Leo’s tan abs.
Finn on the other hand had no shame. His eyes raked his entire body as his mouth went dry.
“Alright. I’ll follow you guys?”
“Huh? Oh yeah.” Logan nodded.
“Get it Knut.” Reg cupped his hands over his mouth and shouted as they left the gift shop and headed outside to the 100 degree weather.

For mermay I would love to see some Danbrey for 24 (lighthouse)!
Here you go! I went with SFW for this one
“You excited honeysuckle?” Her father sets her sleeping bag out on the floor.
“Yes” Dani manges her bravest smile. She’s never slept anywhere but their little house on the cliffs, and the lighthouse, with its echoing stairs and lack of true darkness, is the opposite of that.
“It’ll be fun. Like a camp out. I can even make s’mores over the stove.”
“Okay.” She sets her backpack on the floor, then follows him to the kitchen. At nine, she can already tell when her parents are doing their best, can spot the way her father carries himself when he’s tired but trying not to show it.
He makes them dinner, canned chili with goldfish crackers, and gives her a little tour. When it’s time for bed, he tucks her in, handing her the Totoro plush she sleeps with.
“When is mom coming back?”
Her father sighs, “Two weeks, assuming your grandma gets better at the speed they’re expecting. Maybe we’ll get lucky and she’ll recover even faster than that.”
Dani nods. Her teacher expressed surprise that Dani was staying here and not taking the trip with her mom. The given reason was the gated community didn’t allow children to stay that long. But Dani knows the truth; her grandparents don’t like her dad. And because Dani is the result of her mom loving and staying with her dad, they don’t like her, either.
He kisses her forehead, makes her promise for the bajillionth time that she won’t go in the water, and tells her goodnight.
-----------------------------------------
She’s looking for seashells when it happens. Living by the sea means she knows not to turn her back on it. Too bad the wave hits her from the side, carried up and over the nearby rock and knocking her into the surf. She scrambles up, spluttering, touches her neck, and feels like she’s going to throw up. Her bracelet, the one mom gave her for luck, is gone.
“Oh no, oh no, where are you, oh no”
“Um, are you looking for this?” A girl watches her from the surf, bracelet dangling from her hand.
“Ohmygosh” She snatches the jewelry away, holding it to her chest, “thank you. It’s from my mom and, uh, and I try to be careful but it’s hard sometimes.”
“I get that.” The girl holds up a necklace, “this is from my mom. It’s like one she wears; she says I can have the real one when I’m older. Can I come on the beach?”
Dani nods, then gasps as the girl joins her. She’s seen mermaids in books or that pirate movie her mom watches sometimes. But they’re always grown ups with long hair, pale skin, and green tails. This mermaid is the same age as Dani, her dark skin dotted with freckles and her black held in place with pieces of coral. Her tail is shimmering red and black, the prettiest thing Dani’s ever seen.
“You’re a mermaid.” Dani says, because she can’t think of what else to say.
“Yeah. And you’re a human. Why are you here? It’s usually just that guy.”
“That’s my dad. I’m staying with him.”
“Do you wanna hang out?”
“Yes! Wait, how’s that going to work? I’m not allowed to swim around the lighthouse.”
“I’m allowed to be on the beach, so we’re good.”
“Okay” Dani grins, excited, before her dad’s voice carries down the beach, calling her to come in, “shoot, I have to go.”
“Okay, byyyyyeee!” The mermaid waves as Dani hurries up the sand, and is gone when she turns around for a final look.
------------------------------------------
“Got any tens?”
“Go fish.”
Aubrey draws another card, “I still think it’s weird that you don’t really fish during this game.”
“You’re just grumpy you’re losing.” Dani teases. Aubrey sticks her tongue out. Dani responds in kind.
“When your dad finally lets you swim, we’re gonna play it my way and I’ll kick your tail. Legs?”
“Butt.”
Aubrey snickers, wiggles closer on the warm sand. They’ve found a patch of beach that isn’t immediately visible from land or sea, meaning Aubrey isn’t in danger of being seen and Dani isn’t breaking her promise to her dad to stay out of the water.
“If you come to the beach near my house, I can swim there. But I’m still not allowed to swim alone. I could drown.”
The mermaid purses her lips, “I wouldn’t let you drown.
“I don’t think my mom would believe me if I said I had a mermaid helping me.”
“Man, why can’t humans just have tails? Or, like, fins.”
“I think then we’d just be mermaids. Don’t worry; I’ll get to swim on my own when I’m older and we can play in the water then.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“FINALLY!” Aubrey raises her arms triumphantly as Dani wades into the surf. It took four years and passing a survival swimming course for her parents to be okay with her swimming alone. The smile on Aubrey’s face makes the weeks pretending to swim in a riptide worth it.
“Do you wanna race? Ooh, or I could show you the ray nest, or we could go look for otters-”
“Let’s start with a race. I’ve been waiting years to kick your tail.”
The mermaid’s smile takes on a competitive edge, “last one to that rock is a rotten urchin!”
With that, she splashes Dani with her tail and zooms through the water. Dani dives forward after her, but even with her newfound swimming skills she makes it to the rock a good ten seconds after her friend.
“Best two out of three?” She says the moment she comes up for air.
“You’re on.”
Best two out of three becomes best out of ten, and on number ten Dani plays dirty, throwing her arms around Aubrey’s waist when she manages to catch her. Her friend shrieks with laughter, spinning and chasing Dani towards shore. The human slips and Aubrey tackles her, sand clinging to both of them as they roll onto their sides, cackling into the salt air.
They stay on the sand until it gets dark, counting stars and holding hands until Dani has to go home.
-------------------------------------------------
Dani’s trying not to panic; it’s not the first time Aubrey’s missed meeting her. Sometimes the mermaid gets called away for lessons or has last minute things to take care of, and they haven’t figured out a way to get messages between underwater and above it (they tried a supposedly waterproof cellphone but it only lasted an hour). But it’s been three days without a single sign of her friend.
As she’s contemplating getting the boat her dad uses for fishing on his days off and going further out to look for her, Aubrey surfaces. Even before they reach each other, it’s obvious Aubrey’s been crying.
Dani kneels in the soaked sand, opening her arms, and Aubrey burrows into them, salt water of two kinds dripping onto Dani’s jacket.
“Aubrey?”
Her friend hides her face against her neck, “Mom’s gone. There, there was an accident and she, she didn’t-” it cuts off in a sob.
Dani holds her tighter, strokes her hair, murmurs, “I’m so sorry” as Aubrey shakes in her arms. The wind whips around them, stinging her cheeks, chilling her fingers. She doesn’t care. Aubrey needs her.
---------------------------------------------------------
“Ta-dah!” Aubrey produces a massive clam with a flourish, narrowly avoiding sending water onto the slices of cake Dani smuggled down to the beach.
“Aw, thanks Aubrey, you didn’t have to--holy crap!” She gawps as Aubrey opens the clam, revealing a pearl necklace.
“Like it? It took me, like, a year to get them all. Had to fight a few otters for some of the oysters.”
“Uh-”
“Kidding!” Aubrey flops her head into Dani’s lap, “I’d never bug the otters; Dr. Harris Bonkers would never forgive me for bothering his friends.”
Dani clasps the necklace in place, rests a hand on Aubrey’s tail. She traces figure eights on it, smiling when her friend sighs and nuzzles her stomach.
“You’re the best, Aubrey.”
“Thanks. I, um, I just wanted you to have something to remember me by.”
Her heart turns to an iceberg, “You’re leaving?”
“What? No!” Aubrey sits up, bringing them face to face, “you’re eighteen now. That’s when humans leave home.”
Dani giggles, “Not automatically. I haven’t made up my mind if I want to leave Kepler or not. I might just stay in town; I like it here, and Mama offered me a job manning the community gardens.”
Aubrey’s tail flutters, “Um, I have another point in the stay category.”
“Yeah? Oh” Dani sighs as Aubrey cups her cheek and guides her into a kiss. When Dani deepens it, Aubrey trills, shifting so she’s in Dani’s lap and draping her arms over her shoulders.
“Well?” Aubrey whispers, brushing their noses together.
“Definitely a convincing point, cutie pie.”
Aubrey trills again, knocking her backwards and kissing her senseless in the sand.
-----------------------------------------------
Much of Kepler is surprised when, upon his retirement, the lighthouse keeper announces his daughter will be taking his place. After all, why would a charming young woman want such a job?
The charming young woman isn't particularly interested in their speculation. If she took the job in order to be closer to her wife well, that's her business, now isn't it?

II - Autumn’s naps
The lonely prince and the silly commoner Part 1 | ~ 1500 words
“Can miles truly separate us from friends? If we want to be with someone we love, aren’t we already there?” — Richard Bach.
As their bond grew, Harunobu came less and less at school. Even though Kotone could still play with others kids, she terribly missed him. It's always a relief when he finally came back, but the uneasy feeling it’s may be the last time they see each other starts hovering over their heads.
"Hey, Nikaidou." The two children are playing with figurines animals — a giraffe for Kotone and a heron for him. Her brutal changing mood, sharping with the tone of their story a moment ago stops Nikaidou.
"What?"
"Are you healed now?"
He sighs, staring his toy with a bothered pout. "Yeah." He says in a weak voice betraying the 'not quite' part.
They stop talking. The atmosphere is weighing. A cold and thick bubble captures them both, isolating the two friends from the others children.
"But..." Harunobu pursues in a very, very quiet voice. "I may stop going to school. I may be schooling at home if I become sick again."
Kotone stiffen before she turns over him with a horrified face.
"It can't be! You— !"
But nothing else comes out. What could do two children against the crushing voices of adults? As the little girl tries to find a solution, her tan face turns red of frustration.
"That's not fair!" She ends up exploding and throwing her poor giraffe away.
"You shouldn't do that," The boy reprimands. "Dad says every object has a soul and you should take care of them."
Kotone loudly exhales and crosses her arms, disapproving. She mumbles that she already knows that, but her anger is too big for her to contain. Then her eyes light up.
"I know! We have to exchange our addresses! Like that, we could still visit each other, even if we don't go to school anymore."
He blinks, thoughtful, before approving with energy. "That should do it!"
They smile to seal their agreement.
The next day, they fulfill it.
The day after, the great summer vacations begin.
⋅.˳˳.⋅ॱ˙˙ॱ⋅.˳˳.⋅ॱ˙˙ॱ⋅.˳˳.⋅⋅.˳˳.⋅ॱ˙˙ॱ⋅.˳˳.⋅ॱ˙˙ॱ⋅.˳˳.⋅
Dear Nikaidou Harunobu,
I hope you are doing good! My parents and I have been visiting my grandparents in Hokkaido. It's very sunny here, but also a bit cold! I have been a lot to the beach and took a lot of pretty shells. My grandpa has been fishing on his boat and he even shows me how to doing it! It was really fun and the fishes very yummy. How are your vacations? What did you do?
Nakagawa Kotone
Hanaoka is next to his young master, lying on his hospital bed, listening carefully the letter he is reading for him. His left arm is on a drip, piercing his pale skin. The boy doesn't seem to mind it, and Hanaoka couldn't tell if it's a good or a bad thing.
He used to be a little worry when he delivered the letter. How would Harunobu take it? Would he be hurt to imagine his friend living like any other kids while he has been stuck in a bed since the beginning of August? Even if it wasn't the intent, it could give him a bad reflexion of himself.
But Harunobu keeps smiling until the very end of the letter. He reaches his hand to the postcard that Hanaoka gladly gives in.
"How are you feeling?" Hanaoka couldn't help but ask. He doesn't have the heart to directly formulate the real question he has in mind because maybe — just maybe — it didn't cross the child's mind.
His grey eyes leave the pictured landscape for his caretaker."I'm fine." He assures."I'm glad she remembered me."
It’s may be a pure coincidence he answers his tacit question, but Hanaoka likes to believe his young master is smart enough to have figured it out.
"Say, Hanaoka... Can you help me answer her back?"
The butler smiles gently. "Of course."
Dear Nakagawa Kotone,
Thank you for your letter, it made me really happy! My parents stay for a whole week with me and we play a lot together. It was a very fun week! My father also gave me a game of shōgi and I really like it. I hope we'll play it together one day! I've never been in Hokkaido, but it seems to be a very nice place! Here, it has been very hot and I didn't go outside very much. When the vacations will be over, don't hesitated to visit me at my home during the weekend. I'll leave you my number, so you can call me anytime!
I hope I will see you soon!
Nikaidou Harunobu
"Moooom, why?" Kotone cries loudly. Her whole body imprison the left adult's leg, who's trying unsuccessfully to chase her away and continuing her walk.
"Don't be silly, Kotone." Her mother responds with a stern voice. She pushes the child head to detach her from her leg, like if the child was a sticky insect. "We just came back home. Your dad and I are tired, we can't let drive at Nikaidou's house."
"GRMMMMMMMMMH!! And why NOT? It's not like you are invited anyway." She retorts.
"Kotone! Now you're being rude!"
"I want to go! I want to go! I want to go NOW!"
"KOTONE!"
The woman manages to finally get her kid off, catches her by the neck like a kitten and put her in her bedroom.
"Acting like a brat will lead you nowhere! Stay in your room and allow us to have some PEACE!"
The door slams behind her, making Kotone jumps. Then, she crosses her arms, blows her cheeks out of frustration, and stays still.
She'll need to be more subtle next time.
⋅.˳˳.⋅ॱ˙˙ॱ⋅.˳˳.⋅ॱ˙˙ॱ⋅.˳˳.⋅⋅.˳˳.⋅ॱ˙˙ॱ⋅.˳˳.⋅ॱ˙˙ॱ⋅.˳˳.⋅
Kotone tried everything. She tried to be cute, to be a very good girl (she even accepted to wear the ugly pink dress her mother loves so much when her friends came home). She has been clever in her choice of words, she has been straightforward. Then the impatience walks in and she has been less good and nice. But being deprived of dessert and being put in her room is the only thing she gets out of those protests.
When October comes in, she decides that if her parents couldn't do it, she will do by her own.
Kotone is not stupid (or so she likes to believe): an expedition needs to be prepared. First, she'll take her tiny bag for sports, a bottle of water, a snack, a map... She keeps the letter to make the call and to knows where to go. That's true... she has to announced herself.
The kid inhales deeply, and walks on her tiptoes while carefully observing her surrounding. There is no one in sight. She can hear the incomprehensible noise of the television: her dad is definitely watching it. Her mom goes with her friends some times ago and shouldn’t coming back before the late afternoon. It’s now or never.
Straightening herself, Kotone approaches the home phone and carefully places it on the floor. That way, she’ll be able to see the touch numbers. And then, slowly, her finger starts hitting the keys.
Beep beep beepbeep beep beep…
She has to wait now until someone answers. The kid has the feeling to throw a bottle in the very vast ocean, unsure if it’ll reach someone.
"Hello?"
It’s a mature, feminine and unknown voice. Kotone’s heart beats louder as she struggles founding her words. Paralyzed by anxiety, the child stays quiet.
"Hello?" The voice repeats, "Is someone there?"
The fear her interlocutor cuts the conversation snaps her initial shyness.
"Um, hello! Is this - erm, I mean, i-is this Nikaidou’s number?"
"Yes?"
"Well, I am Nakagawa Kotone, and I want to know if I can come to Ni - I mean! If I can visit Nikaidou!"
Her fingers twist around the thread’s phone, nervously playing with it.
"Oh, you’re miss Nakagawa! You are welcomed anytime. When do you think to come over?"
"Today!" Kotone couldn’t help but screams.
"T-Today?" The voice stutters a bit dumbfounded. "Wait a second please…"
The silence replaces her. Kotone takes a look at the living room's door, hoping her dad don't walk in. Her heart seems to have calm down, yet it still beat hard enough on her chest to hear it.
"My apologies for the wait. You are expected, miss Nakagawa."
Kotone couldn’t hold a squeak of excitement.
"I’m on my way!"
"Wait! When are you supposed to —"
But it’s too late : Kotone is already gone and, after telling her father she is going to play outside (which isn’t technically a lie), she climbs the fence and takes her first step on the street.

Sister (Backstory Part 1)
Summary: Backstory for a fan fiction coming up about y/n and her journey through life after the Uchiha massacre, finding love and friendship, learning to forgive and grow as a ninja. This centers more on the reader with young Naruto
Pairings : Itachi/y/n, Naruto/y/n (platonic)
please give me feedback! its my first Naruto fic and I have big ideas!
You and Itachi had been joined at the hip since a very young age, you were next door neighbors after all. Your parents had died during a mission and you were taken in by your grandparents, bakery owners in the Uchiha compound. Almost every day you took some baked goods from the store and delivered them to Itachi’s family and everyday Itachi was the one to greet you at the door.
From school to training on the fields, wherever Itachi went you did as well. You had no siblings of your own, so being with Itachi was something akin to that. As soon as Sasuke was able to walk around he would try to follow after Itachi and you. You saw how kind and caring Itachi was to his younger brother and envied him a bit, you wanted someone to care for as well.
Well, there was someone who you also cared for, someone the around the same age as Sasuke.
You had seen the older women of the village care for a young toddler named Naruto, the infamous nine-tailed jinchuriki. You saw the women take care of him from time to time but you also noticed the disdain with which they did so. You could not understand at the time why their faces contorted in anger when he did something, he was a kid. You had not seen Itachi treat his brother in such a way and could not understand why this child was being treated so differently.
You decided to ask you grandparents one day, why there was such a dislike of Naruto in the village. You grandmother looked at you with sad eyes and explained the events prior to his birth. Your confusion was still evident, so you voiced your opinion,
“okay, that still does not make any sense grandma? Are you saying they believe it is his fault these events happened”?
“dear, some in the village are a bit ignorant and need something to blame. In this case it is young Naruto that they blame, he is an easy target because he houses the nine tailed beast”
“well do you care if I hang out with him?”
“of course not, we cannot be ignorant like everyone else. Do you think they do not fear us a bit as well?”
Confusion struck your face, what could she mean?
“what do you mean grandma?”
“never mind child, now go play with whomever you wish. Show respect and enjoy yourself”
That very day is when you went to look for Naruto. After bidding you grandmother farewell with a kiss on her cheek, you grab your ninja tools and leave. You ran through the village, looking for the small yellow headed kid. You checked the house you had seen the Hokage go into, but to no avail. You checked the toy stores, but he was not there either. He was not old enough to be in the academy, you assumed he was about Sasuke’s age, about 4 years old. You decided to check anyways, who knows he might be in the playground. Looking around you saw the other children playing and decided to just ask. Walking up to the kids you cleared your voice and spoke,
“hey, have you guys seen Naruto?”
Turning around the little kids just stared at you in awe
“hello, what’s wrong?”
“sorry y/n-chan, we can’t believe you’re talking to us!”
“yeah! We have seen you and itachi training and you guys are so cool!”
“can you teach us something, please please please”
Bombarded by the compliments and praise you just laughed out loud. It was cute to have so many little kids in awe because you were considered a cool older student.
“I’m just looking for Naruto right now, could you tell me where he is?”
The kids scowled and looked at each other, one smirking slightly.
“if you show us something cool, we can tell you where Naruto is!”
If it was enough to get them to tell you where Naruto was then that was fine with you.
“fine, I’ll show you a shadow clone!”
Forming your hands into the familiar signs, you created your clone much to the kids delight. Seeing their faces light up was pretty worth it.
“y/n-chan you are so cool!”
“we saw Naruto heading to the river like 10 minutes ago”
“thanks guys, work hard!”
Dispersing your clone, you sped off in the direction of the river. It was a short distance, so you arrived there in no time. Looking around, you hear and see the yellow headed child jumping around rocks with a makeshift fishing rod. You see him take a seat and wait for something to hit his line.
Heading in his direction you decide to fish out one of your kunai. Coming up behind Naruto you look at where his fishing rod is and spot a fish about to swim away from it. Quickly you throw your kunai towards it and see it hit the target. You hear a tiny gasp coming from Naruto and look to see his head swivel in your direction with astonishment.
“Hey Naruto, I’m sorry to sneak up on you like that”
If his eyes could go any wider, they do
“how do you know my name y/n-chan”
“my bad, I should have introduced myself, my name is y/n. better question is how do you know my name?”
“e-everyone knows your name y/n-chan. You and Itachi are kind of famous at the academy, I’ve seen you two from the outside”
Thinking back to it, you do remember seeing his bright yellow hair sitting on a bench looking at the training grounds at the academy
“well ok, now that we have introductions out of the way why don’t you go get that fish you just caught hm?”
You can see his eyes light up and he turns to go get the fish almost slipping on a rock with his tiny feet. Bringing it back, he hands it to you, blushing.
“here you go, you caught it, you should have it”
You weren’t just about to take this fish from Naruto, that would defeat the purpose of you catching it for him.
“alright lets both eat it, how about that? I’m kind of hungry too”
He looks up at you and he gives you the biggest smile you’ve seen, melting you heart.
You start a small fire to cook the fish with and task him with bringing you little sticks and stones, which he does as fast as he can. Having set up the fire with the sticks given to you, you both sit down and wait for it to get big enough. You hear his little stomach growling and look to see him blushing slightly.
“have you eaten today” you ask him
“no, I don’t have enough money right now. I did not want to ask the old man Hokage for any” he says quietly. You can feel your heart breaking but keep it together. You assume that the Hokage has been the one who has been giving him an allowance for food. But he’s a child, how is he supposed to know how to care for himself.
“well since it’s still pretty light out, how about we head to Ichiraku later tonight so you can have dinner? This can be you lunch for today” you say, disappointed that you didn’t find him sooner in the day so you could have given him breakfast. Looking at him you can see the happiness radiating off of him, the innocence that he has, you wonder if this is the first time, he has been shown kindness.
“o-okay, I accept”
You smile at him and put the fish on a stick to cook so you two can eat it. As soon as it’s done, you give it to Naruto to start eating, and see the bits of drool coming out of his mouth as it gets closer to him.
You feel like crying watching him eat the fish, your heart broken by his innocence and his joy.
“hey hey y/n-chan, can I call you onee-san?”
Now you blush, a little taken aback by his question. You've never been asked something like that, you've never been called that because you are an only-child. You give him a big grim with you eye smile and respond
“yes, I accept”
From that day on you spent part of your days with Naruto, accompanying him, bringing him home to dinner with your family, being his older sister and he your younger brother.

The villagers speak in hushed warbled tones, speaking in a language you cannot understand, you speak back unknowingly. Some of the older ones know your language, it’s ancient and lost but they can remember, they tell you their names and you try to put it to memory. They ask where you came from but you don’t know the answer, you came from somewhere. Right? Somewhere far away? Or somewhere nowhere at all?
You don’t learn their language but you learn their habits. You can read the symbols they show and follow their rules. They tolerate you while you are in their village walls.
The villagers give you supplies and you thank them for their hospitality but they only stare at you with blank expressions, nodding mutely as you leave.
You notice you look strange in comparison, taller and slender, fingers long and sly as you flip through the pages of a book the symbols spelling words and phrases that you can recognize and speak aloud. You don’t know what your face looks like, you’ve never seen a clear image, only through the ripples in the pond as fish tug at the worthless bait, unknowing of their soon demise. The villagers pull their children away when you pass, everyone stares but they do not yell or force you to leave.
In the morning after you’ve risen from a sleep that never feels long enough, you follow the same routine. You feed your animals, milk your cow whose name you’ve forgotten long ago, you harvest sugar cane near the ponds and split planks into sticks to trade for currency. The villagers watch you work with side glances from their workshop windows. You call out with kindness in your tone, they look away.
You speak with the oldest villagers often as they can speak back to you in a tone you understand, they do not tell you why the language is so different, they do not tell you why you do not look the same as everyone else. They tell you none of the answers to the millions of questions because they themselves do not know, for that was before their time. Their parents and grandparents might have known, they might’ve been able to tell you, but there is no one In the village that has the answers.
You continue reading the old musty books that you’re able to buy. Trying to search through the familiar language for clues or answers. You come up only with spells that you know not how to use. No one is there to teach you.
You find comfort with the animals for you will never know their language and they will never speak yours. You feed them and provide care, you’ve earned their trust.
One of the villagers shows you how to create tools, how to mold and press the metal and stone until it’s something that you can use. You thank them and find more work to keep you busy through the days. Between the nights that you lay awake, unable to sleep as creatures of the dark growl and hiss from outside. You’re too busy thinking.
Questions are always there. Where did you come from? Why are you different? Why do only the oldest speak your language? Surely you’re not that old, are you?
Why are you here?
A villager gives you a book for free, possibly out of pity when you show up the next day dragging your feet, exhaustion dripping from your posture. They give you useless instructions that fall onto deaf ears. You do not trade anything else that day, returning to the rickety home you’ve built, words from the book dripping from your tongue.
The words tell of different worlds. Places that seem fabled but could only be true. A voice whispers in your ear, you have to go.
So you leave the next day, you do not tell anyone and you do not know how they’ve reacted. Only carrying what you need on your back as you search through caverns and trees. The oldest villagers have given you instructions, the knowledge needed to survive on your own.
You find a portal hidden behind dusted cobwebs and cracked stones. Lava bubbles and the remains of what must have been a guardian at one point lay in the corner.
You step through the portal.
For a moment there’s nothing at all, then you feel cold. All around you Is a white stone, radiating a chill that settles a pit of dread in your stomach.
Waiting on the surface is a beast of which you’ve never seen, and ones you have seen before. Shrieking in a tone that sounds so familiar yet already too lost to time to make out. Something has urged you, pushed you forward, sword gripped tightly in your hands, to kill it.
So you do.
The mother of an unborn child slain, not so much a beast in its chilling death. Body fading and fizzling into nothing, leaving the egg it had been protecting. You leave it be, it would only escape your grasp if you tried to take it with you.
There’s a hum now, a familiar light drone that eases the tension out of your shoulders. You step through the final portal.
Voices whisper loudly in your head, speaking in a language you finally understand. They tell you a story. They tell you everything. The questions that you’ve had since the beginning answered finally. They tell you who you are and give you a name, how you came to be but not where you came from. They tell you of the universe. They give you the knowledge that you set out to find, yet you can only sob, more questions brimming, yet you have no voice to ask.
They tell you that they love you. That you are love. They tell you things that would make no difference to know or not.
They tell you to wake up.
