Billi the Belligerent's mobility was getting so bad a few days ago I was starting to think about evaluating her QOL and making scary decisions
Sunday evening she got her cartrophen injection, and yesterday she was downright peppy! Was happy to receive scritches, allowed her insulin shots with no problem, practically skipped to her food plate when I filled it (as well as a large, geriatric, arthritic cat with numbness in her extremities can 'skip')
She still can't walk very sturdily or very far, but clearly the cartrophen makes a difference in how comfortable she is. I should ask the doc if we can increase it to twice a week or something, because she seems to feel pretty great on Monday but is a sad sad lump by Friday
Speaking of Friday, this Friday she's getting her second monthly Solensia injection, which is supposed to help with her arthritis as well. So, fingers crossed that it will make a positive difference

Mastering Blood Sugar Control: Strategies for a Healthier Life
Maintaining stable blood sugar levels is crucial for overall health and well-being. Fluctuations in blood glucose can lead to a range of health issues, from fatigue and irritability to more severe conditions like diabetes. Here’s a comprehensive guide to mastering blood sugar control through diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes.Understanding Blood SugarBlood sugar, or blood glucose, is the amount of glucose present in the blood. It’s a primary energy source for the body, but maintaining it within a healthy range is essential. Blood sugar levels are influenced by the food we eat, how we exercise, and various physiological factors.1. Balanced DietA balanced diet is the cornerstone of effective blood sugar management. Focus on these dietary principles:Choose Low Glycemic Index Foods: Foods with a low glycemic index (GI) release glucose slowly into the bloodstream, helping to maintain stable blood sugar levels. Examples include whole grains, legumes, and most vegetables.Incorporate Fiber: Fiber slows the absorption of sugar, which helps in controlling blood glucose levels. Opt for fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.Control Portion Sizes: Eating large portions can lead to spikes in blood sugar. Use smaller plates and be mindful of serving sizes.Limit Sugary Foods and Drinks: Reduce the intake of foods and beverages high in added sugars, like sodas, candy, and baked goods.2. Regular ExercisePhysical activity is vital for blood sugar control. Here’s how exercise helps:Improves Insulin Sensitivity: Regular exercise makes cells more responsive to insulin, which helps in managing blood sugar levels.Aids in Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy weight through exercise can improve blood glucose control and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.Enhances Overall Health: Exercise supports cardiovascular health, reduces stress, and boosts mood.Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, such as brisk walking, swimming, or cycling.3. Consistent Meal TimingEating meals at regular intervals helps in stabilizing blood sugar levels.Don't Skip Meals: Skipping meals can lead to blood sugar drops or spikes. Aim to eat every 3-4 hours.Balanced Meals: Each meal should include a mix of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats to provide a steady source of energy.4. Stress ManagementChronic stress can affect blood sugar levels. Incorporate stress-reducing techniques into your routine:Practice Relaxation Techniques: Techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and yoga can help manage stress.Get Adequate Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night to support overall health and blood sugar regulation.5. Monitor Blood Sugar LevelsRegular monitoring helps you understand how different foods and activities affect your blood sugar levels.Use a Glucometer: Track your blood sugar levels as recommended by your healthcare provider.Keep a Log: Record your blood sugar readings along with information about your diet, exercise, and any symptoms you experience.6. Seek Professional GuidanceConsult with a healthcare provider or a registered dietitian to create a personalized blood sugar management plan. They can provide tailored advice based on your specific health needs.ConclusionEffective blood sugar control is achievable through a combination of a balanced diet, regular exercise, consistent meal timing, stress management, and diligent monitoring. By adopting these practices, you can maintain stable blood sugar levels and support your overall health. Remember, individual needs may vary, so working with a healthcare professional is essential for developing a plan that works best for you. Blood Sugar Control: Strategies for a Healthier Life

Blood Sugar
England Lionesses x Teen!Reader
Summary: You have a hypo during a match
Tumblr media
Your sugar levels were fine at the start of the match.
You'd checked them before you went out. They were fine and it's not like your diabetes were a new thing. You knew how to control them.
"Looking good?" Alessia asks as you press your monitor against the patch attached to your arm.
It takes a few seconds for it to flash up but you nod.
"Good."
She grins, throwing an arm around your shoulders. "Excellent. Can't have one of our midfielders out of it. Who else will feed me balls?"
You roll your eyes. "Don't act like I'm the only one doing my job."
Lessi pinches your cheek. "But you're my favourite! Look at you! All cute and tiny!"
"Leave me alone!"
You try to shove her away but she just holds onto you firmer.
You'd known Alessia for years. You used to live next door to each other before she went to college in America and she'd been obsessed with you ever since you got placed into her arms as a baby.
She'd been overjoyed to see you on the team sheet for the Euro's and then now for the Finalissima. It helped, of course, that you and Alessia had racked up the most assist to goal pairings on the entire team.
"Leave her alone, Less," Leah says with an eye roll," We need her in tip-top shape, not looking like a tomato."
Alessia huffs as you put away your glucose monitor and dart around her, taking refuge with Keira and Lucy. You stick your tongue out at her as you pass.
You feel good during the first half, feeding the ball to Tooney, who scores. You feel good during halftime too, though you forget to check your glucose monitor.
You'd had it in your hand ready and waiting but Mary had caught you in conversation for the entirety of the break and it had completely slipped your mind.
Things took a turn for the worst about halfway through the second half. Your arms suddenly felt too heavy for your body and your mouth had gotten very dry, very quickly.
You sway on your feet and just manage to get the ball out from under your feet and to Keira to run up to Brazil's half. You stumble a little bit.
You're sweating now too, badly. You're sweating too much even for someone who has been on the pitch for nearly ninety minutes. You can feel your legs shaking too and you have to back up to keep your footing.
"Hey, what's going on? Is something wrong?"
The thick scouse accent from behind you means you've bumped into Alex and you practically go limp against her. She notices that too and immediately makes sure you stay upright.
Your head flops back like your neck can no longer support it. It's probably for the best because your vision has gone blurry and your head is swimming.
It takes all your concentration to move your lips in some semblance of words even though it comes out all garbled and slurred.
"'m goin' to pass out soon," You manage to say," Low sugar, I thin'." You draw in a ragged breath. "Meds have got...got..."
"Hey!" Alex shakes you. "The medics have got a...?"
"Gotta gluca...a gluca-"
You don't get to finish your sentence because you got fully limp now. Alex lays you on the ground, gesturing wildly to the medics and to the ref and to everyone who will see.
Leah's the first person to come skidding in, her hand immediately going to your pulse.
"What happened?!"
"I dont know!" Alex replies," She suddenly went all funny. She's sweating buckets! Er..." She shakes her head as she tries to clear her thoughts. "She said something about the medics having a...a gluca-something? I don't know. She passed out before she could finish."
"A glucagon injection," Alessia says as she comes running in as well," Fuck, her sugar levels must have tanked."
"She's right," The first medic says, shoving a glucose monitor onto your sensor," These are low. It's a wonder she didn't pass out earlier."
No one's really listening to him, least of all Alessia, who's rummaging through the first aid kit in search of something. Another medic is waving for a stretcher and a third one is pulling up the bottom of your shorts and cleaning off the top of your thigh with a cotton swab doused in alcohol.
"And she didn't hit her head?" The fourth medic is asking Alex, who shakes her head.
"No. She stumbled a bit but I caught her. She didn't hit anything. Just passed straight out in my arms."
Leah doesn't really know what else to do but stare. The whole team has joined them, forming a huddle around your unconscious body to block the cameras from seeing.
It's a pretty severe thing happening because the officials have even let Sarina on the pitch and she has joined the huddle with the rest of the staff to keep your privacy.
When Leah manages to tear her gaze from you, it lands on Alessia. She's at your other side, ripping open a small plastic box in a hurry. She uncaps a small glass bottle of powder and stabs a syringe into it, pushing all of the liquid into it.
She shakes the bottle a few times before turning it upside down and drawing it all back into the syringe.
"You need to roll her over once it's in," She says and Leah and a few of the medics immediately grab parts of you to pull on.
"Alessia," The first medic says," Do you need me to do this?"
"I've done it before!" Alessia snaps," As soon as I take the needle out, roll her in case she throws up. Okay? One. Two. Three!"
The needle finds a home in the top of your thigh, the area that had been disinfected. Alessia jabs the needle in and pushes down. As soon as she takes it out, Leah tugs on your shoulder to get you on your side.
"I need to come off," Alessia says to Sarina as you're carefully loaded onto a stretcher," I have to be with her. She'll be disorientated when she wakes up."
"Go," Sarina says," Be with her."
The match ends in a penalty shootout but everyone seems to be in the same mind because the medal ceremony is delayed until after you've been checked.
You're looking a lot better when Leah and the others burst into the physio's room. You're sitting upright with Alessia by your side, forcing a sugary drink down your throat.
It's clear that this has been going on for a while because there's another empty can of your favourite nearby and a packet of haribos in your hand.
"You scared us," Leah says.
"Did we win?"
"No talking!" Alessia snaps," Drink! All of it!"
You flash an amused smile at Leah but do as you're told.
"We won," Mary confirms," Penalty shootout but we did it. Could have done without the scare though."
"Sorry," You say with a wince," If it helps, I didn't plan it."
"Thank god for that," Alex mutters," Because that wasn't fun, kid. I thought you were dying."
"Just a bad hypo," You say and Lessi swats you.
"Stop making fun of dangerous situations," She scolds," I don't like having to give you injections so often."
You roll your eyes. "You've done it twice in my entire life!"
"Three times now! You're going to give me a heart attack one day."
"Well, can you have that heart attack later? We've got medals to collect."

LOWERING YOUR CORTISOL LEVELS: THE MAIN STRESS HORMONE
Tumblr media
Hi lovelies! If you didn’t know, cortisol is the main stress hormone of your body. Cortisol is a good thing for our bodies, it manages how our body uses carbs, fats or proteins, keeps inflammation down, regulates your blood pressure, increases glucose, controls your sleep cycle and boosts energy for when you have high levels of stress.
However, your body can produce too much unnecessary cortisol which is when it can start taking a toll on us, leading to
Anxiety or depression
Headaches
Heart diseases
Memory problems
Trouble staying focused
Digestive complications
Sleeping complications
Weight gain/loss
and more!
below the read more, there’s ways to lower and regulate our cortisol levels <3
getting adequate sleep
Prioritising and optimising our sleep is already beneficial for us, but it can help with lowering our cortisol levels. To make the most of your sleep, have an winding down routine, sleep and wake at similar times everyday, limit your caffeine intake(including soft drinks!) and reduce your screen time before you go to bed.
Moderate intensity exercise
Too intense exercise or no exercise, can increase the levels of cortisol but intense exercise usually has a temporary effect. It helps with managing our stress better and promotes better sleep which also helps with lowering your cortisol levels.
Practise deep breathing and meditation
This time to clear our minds, helps stimulates our resting & digest system in us. (Parasympathetic nervous system). You can do this wherever, whenever.
Eating a nutritious diet
Only you know what’s the best diet that suits your lifestyle, so I won’t say much about this, but make sure that you’re getting quality nutrition in your body.
Take your supplements
Make sure you talk to your doctor before taking any supplements! Before you consider taking any supplements, do some individual research first.

Red. Red was the color of some of the cardigans in Spencer's closet. Red was the color of his favorite coffee mug in his kitchen. Red was the shade of lipstick he loved on his coworker (and the woman he had been pining over for the last 10 years) the most. Red also happened to be the color his face turned when he was faced with something he had experienced for the first time only weeks prior; jealousy. The team was in Buffalo, New York for a case. Typical serial abductor, nothing the team hadn't seen before. The case had wrapped up in a pretty decent amount of time - the Unsub being caught within a week, which the team felt relief when that happened. Not only could they get home as quick as they could, but it was a huge relief knowing that the horrible person who committed these crimes was locked up and people felt safe because of them.
Y/N was helping Emily pack up some of the case files and other things necessary for them to take back to Quantico for their evidence lockup. A door opened, Spencer walking through with two cups of coffee and a hot tea. "One coffee with light sugar, extra creamer, and one green tea with honey." Spencer gave the cups to the respective people.
Y/N took the tea eagerly, looking up at the man. "You, Spencer Reid, are a lifesaver. The New York air nipped at their skin, so the three who were left to pack up everything at the police station had the brilliant idea of getting hot drinks to warm themselves. "O-Of course, I know it's your favorite." Spencer awkwardly shoved his hands in his pockets as he looked at her, not missing the smirk and knowing glance that one Emily Prentiss gave to the both of them.
"Did you know that green tea is not only good for boosting your energy level, but is also helpful in controlling blood sugar levels by enhancing insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism?"
Y/N looked at Spencer as she took another sip. "Huh. Interesting. Is there anything you don't know, Genius?" She looked at him with a playful smirk, putting a manila folder into the cardboard box.
The door opened again and the three of them looked up. It was one of the local officers there in Buffalo. "So, I was thinking.." The man had walked over to Y/N, starting a conversation. Spencer stared at them as he held one of the folders, his knuckles turning white at how hard he gripped the folder.
He couldn't hear anything the guy was saying, but that didn't matter to him. What mattered to Spencer is what he could hear. Y/N's laugh as her head was thrown back, looking as if she was giggling up to the ceiling.
What could possibly be so funny?
Spencer definitely didn't miss the not-so-subtle pass of a piece of paper from the officer to Y/N. His best guess? His phone number. The only real question Spencer had; Would she even reach out to him or did she just take his number to let him down easy?
"Hotch just texted. Wheels up in 20."
Spencer had never been happier to know Emily than he felt in that moment. He was even thankful for Hotch that because of them having to board the jet so soon, Y/N snapped out of conversation and helped him and Emily finish packing the stuff to take back to the FBI building.
Once they boarded the jet, Y/N sat on the sofa that was normally Reid's spot, but everyone knew that when it came to her, he didn't care if she took it. Anyone else? Tough luck. Soft giggles and whispers took him out of the trance he was in when reading. Again, what could possibly be so funny?
Y/N stared intently at her phone, and Spencer couldn't help but notice the small blush that painted her face, where there usually was nothing.
"Kyle and Y/N sitting in a tree..."
JJ began to sing as she sat down next to Emily and across from Spencer and Morgan. "Sorry?" Spencer looked confused, but the other two just laughed at the blonde. "You didn't hear? That officer back in New York asked Y/N out. He's driving to Quantico this weekend and taking her to dinner, I think."
Spencer's fists turned white again as he gripped the book he was reading. "You alright there, genius?" Emily raised an eyebrow looking at Reid who just nodded. "Just fine." He spoke bluntly.
Before they knew it, Friday had rolled around and Y/N was getting ready for her dinner with Kyle when her phone buzzed. The text read:
From: Penelope Garcia
Hotch needs everyone back for final paperwork. Sorry, dollface.
Y/N sighed, sending her date a quick text as she walked to her car, making her way back to where she was just days ago. When she walked in the door, Penelope was quick to wrap her in a hug. "I'm so sorry about your date.." Spencer heard what the two women were talking about and couldn't help but smile.
His smile quickly disappeared seeing the familiar man walk in moments later, a bouquet of flowers in his hand. Spencer watched as Y/N gasped, walking over to him and taking the flowers, hearing her give thanks to the man.
Spencer could feel his face heating up. He made a confused face mostly to himself. He didn't know what he was feeling but he didn't like it. The slow but building anger, the heat in his face, his fists instinctually curling into balls, and his eyebrows furrowing.
Before he could stop himself, he got up and walked to the pair. "Nice flowers." Spencer started to speak, the anger evident in his voice. "But, her favorite are daisies. I mean, do you even know her?" Spencer scoffed. Y/N looked up at him with a mix of confusion and shock in her eyes.
"Rei-"
Spencer held his hand up to Derek who tried to stop him from talking. "I mean, really. You meet her for maybe all of five minutes and decide she's the one you want and you don't know a single thing about her?" Spencer paused to take a breath and continue.
"Do you even know what her favorite color is, or her favorite song to listen to when she's sad, or her favorite movies depending on the mood she's in, or-or-"
"Reid." The stern voice of Hotch speaking would usually quiet Spencer down, but everyone could see how escalated his emotions were when not even Aaron Hotchner's voice could quiet him.
"Listen, if you want to ask out someone in the BAU, fine. Go right ahead, but not her. Okay? Anyone but her. I've been in love with her for years now, and this... I can't see this working out because you don't know her like I do."
Y/N couldn't help but giggle making Spencer turn to her quick. "Spencer..." She began. "This is Kyle. My best friend from high school. We haven't talked to each other in years, and so when he saw me in New York he gave me his number so we could catch up."
Spencer felt a mix of emotions was through him. Relief, embarrassment, and an emotion he could only describe as "How stupid could I be?". "But, JJ said-" Emily cut him off. "We knew Y/N couldn't hear us so we made a bet to see how fast it would take you to get jealous."
Spencer felt as if he had just seen a ghost for the first time. "I'm so sorry." He apologized profusely. Kyle shrugged it off, saying he understood the confusion. "And, listen, I got her these flowers because as far as I knew, they were her favorite." Kyle said, laughing softly.
Spencer looked towards Y/N who just stood there, staring at him and smiling. "I like daisies a lot. I, especially started liking them when you started to give them to me. They became my favorite because they were the first flowers you ever gave to me, Spencer." Spencer stood there in shock.
What?
"Oh, and for the record. Two things." Rhyan looked at him. "One, I like you too. Always have." Spencer looked at the girl in adoration.
"Two, jealousy is a really nice shade of red on you, Spence."
Red. Red was the color of some of the cardigans in Spencer's closet. Red was the color of his favorite coffee mug in his kitchen. Red was the shade of lipstick he loved on his coworker (and the woman he had been pining over for the last 10 years) the most. Red also happened to be the color his face turned when he was faced with jealousy.
But, more importantly, red just so happened to be the color of the dress Y/N was wearing when she reciprocated Spencer's feelings; their color.

how to write a diabetic character: CGM edition
is your diabetic character wearing a CGM? do they have to? CGMs these are Continous Glucose Monitors that can detect how much sugar is in your bloodstream.
How are they different than tradtional fingerprick (blood) tests? they take blood sugar readings 24/7, and provide you with how your sugars are doing at all times, rather than just at that moment. This leads to tremendously better control over blood sugar.
The way they work is that they can "sample" your blood sugar by testing your subcutaneous tissue for sugar levels then adjusting that value.
Tumblr media
However, they're less accurate than a fingerprick (blood) reading and will often "lag" behind by about 15 minutes.
SO if you have a character who is expereincing low or high blood sugar - they'd get an alarm on their CGM, and then they might take a fingerprick reading to make sure. CGM false alarms DO exist and it can cause some very annoying situations.
A less careful/depressed/struggling/burnt out character might A. not care or "sleep through" alarms B. not double check with a finger prick C. not care that they're wearing a CGM - pump into stuff or just rip it off (although they are very expensive!).
can you mute them? yes, and a character might choose to do this while they're sleeping, having an exam, or if they know they're about to fuck up their blood sugar.
how long do they last? the libre ones last 14 days. the dexcom ones last up to 10 days.
can you shower with them? yes
can you swim with them? yes
can you have sex with them on? yes, and i've read very funny anecdotes from diabetics having to pause during sex because their cgm was beeping
are they expensive? yes! sometimes, they're covered by insurance, but not completely. If a character is in poverty, or do not have insurance, they likely would have to rely solely on fingerpricks.
Who usually uses CGMs? they are very widespread between T1Ds and are increasingly being used by T2Ds as well.
can you share the readings on multiple devices? yes! your character might share their info with their SO, parents, roommates, close friends...etc. It is genuienly one of the most telling signs of a close relationship between people - because those people will see your "mistakes" and decisions.
where do you stick them? the libre ones (circular ones) officially just go on the back of your arm. The dexcom ones can go on just about anywhere that's "soft" - stomach, thighs, back of arm, chest...etc.
does putting them on hurt? sometimes! the way they are installed involves a needle going into the skin then sitting in the subcutaneous tissue. This can sometimes cause some bleeding, and soreness for a few hours.
Often times the process is completely painless, but this is not the case for everyone. A thinner character might struggle to find a place "cushy" enough for a cgm.
can you put them on your own? yes the process is made for one person to stick it on, but i've seen some couples on instagram act all romantic and sappy about applying it together, so that should give you some ideas for your diabetic characters' budding romances ;)
Some CGMs are just naturally faulty, i'd say about 4 sensors is a busted one, and in that case you'll have to replace them - which most companies just do without any hassle.
do they work with insulin pumps? some insulin pumps can work in tangent with CGMs and provide feedback for the user to automatically generate the correct doses of insulin, depending on their current blood sugar.
do they come off easily? depends on who you're asking. some people swear up and down that they never last and have to put on patches, which are admittedly very cute. Weather, clothing, and how clumsy a character is all factor in this. For me personally i just put them on raw and keep them together by sheer willpower.
CGMs can cause anxiety in diabetics. The constant flow of information can easily burnout people, and this can possibly be the case for any diabetic character you might write. Seeing arrows going down or up can be very distressing, especially knowing how painful some of the consequences are. I personally take breaks for both myself and my wallet from using CGMs to avoid burn out.
nonetheless, CGMs are WONDERFUL pieces of technology that have personally made me much happier as a diabetic, freer and a lot more independent.
does your character want their CGM to show? lots of people, including myself don't like revealing their CGMs - but your character might like showing them off!
and lastly - my favorite thing about CGMs - taking them off and having a "naked" shower once a month where i dont have to worry about it coming off. - They look like this:
