Food Drive time
I'm a regular year round drop off point for our local food pantry as I have much longer hours. I've done this for years, so am very familiar with what things we need and rarely receive.
as we get to the season where everyone seems to have a food drive, here's what you should give them
MONEY
money pays the utilities & lets them purchase stuff in bulk for clients. Also pays for gas to pick up large donations from places. Give them money.
That is likely not what your local school/workplace/whatever decided to do though, so expect you to bring in things.
Follow your local pantry's wishlist if they gave you one! If they gave you a wishlist with non-food items on it.... give them those first! Those items are NOT covered by SNAP or WIC, so are harder for people to obtain. Not every pantry has space for stuff like toilet paper but if they asked for it... give them the non-food items over food ones.
If they did not give you a specific list, donate these items:
SPICES
rice & beans suck without spices. even salt and pepper is good! sugar too! Just the most basic spices will do! Got the giant horde of takeout individual packets? Food pantry would love them. Stick them in a ziploc bag before donating, just in case any pop.
FLOUR, CORNMEAL, & MASA HARINA
for baking, thickener, tortillas. If you're doing a drive where you want to show off how many pounds were donated, grab flour.
CEREAL & OATMEAL
Easy meal for folks that may not have access to a kitchen or for kids not up to prepping a meal by themselves yet. Shelf stable milk or milk powder is a nice combo with this, but often turns up as a UDSA commodity, so don't worry about where they'll get it. Bulkier cereals like cheerios are best cause they also double as finger food for toddlers! Got a variety pack of instant oatmeal and didn't like some flavors? Food pantry will take those too, so long as they're individually labelled.
INSTANT MASHED POTATOES
Instant bulk for a meal, very easy prep. Another one that doubles as easy food for little kids. This is also easy and filling for seniors or anyone with dental issues!
BAKING SODA
used for baking and cleaning! Double duty! Get small boxes.

I've been into little Free libraries lately and some of them have little pantries. So I got the dry goods from the pantries and made non perishable meals and gave them back.
Tumblr media
The steward really loves this idea since she is intimidated by dry good. If you had a lot of rice and beans and couldn't think if something fun, yeah, maybe it would be intimidating too.
I love the thought of Little Free Libraries/Pantries. It makes me want to make my own and donate to the community. It just cost money (like everything) but I'll be slowly saving so I can make my own! And maybe even put some dog treats in it, for the dog walkers.

Genuine question: How do you donate cash to a food bank? The vast majority of the ones I know of around here are through a church, so I feel like giving them money is More Complicated because of tax things? But someone please correct me if I'm wrong!
Doc, what are the top five items food banks LOVE to receive? I'm doing a collection soon and want to ask for specifics.
MONEY. WE WANT MONEY. MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY. WE CAN DO SO MUCH WITH IT. WE HAVE ACCESS TO DEALS YOU COULD NEVER. MONEY
That aside.
I’m only going to talk about food items but if your food bank takes personal items, a lot of times diapers, feminine hygiene products, etc, are very very welcome.
1) Canned chicken and beef
Tumblr media
looooooove this stuff. It’s expensive, it lasts forever, it tastes good and it can be used a variety of ways. This stuff is fucking catnip to food banks, it’s so hard for us to provide proteins.
2) Fancy nut butters
Tumblr media
Peanut butter is a standby for food banks as a shelf-stable inexpensive protein, but if we have a family with a kid with a peanut allergy that’s not going to work. Non-peanut butters are expensive and it’s something we hardly ever see donated. (we also like peanut butter, but that’s easier for us to buy ourselves than non-peanut butters)
3) Canned or packaged tuna
Tumblr media
You may notice a trend here in shelf-stable proteins. And yeah. That’s basically it, so I’m not going to keep harping on it. But this stuff is a godsend.
4) Easy breakfast things for kids (Granola bars, instant oatmeal, and the like)
Tumblr media
Whatever Donald Trump tells you, most people who get food from food banks are actually working their asses off and so they have to leave Obama to raise their baby or whatever, and they don’t have a lot of time in the morning. Things like this that kids can make for themselves are expensive. (Another trend you may be noticing–donate shit that costs a lot of money. That helps us more than all the shitty green bean cans in the world) But they are so helpful for busy working families where the parents may not have a set schedule and sometimes little Amanda is making her own breakfast before she runs off to school. Don’t let kids go to school hungry.
5) Shelf-stable juice
Tumblr media
This is one people never think of! But if you show up with a bunch of (preferably reduced sugar stuff) bottles of juice at my door, oh man, you are gonna get so many check mark and okay hand emoticons. This stuff is great for kids, and it doesn’t require refrigeration until it’s opened, so it works great for food drives.

emily gwen, the creator of the sunset lesbian flag that we’ve come to commonly use, still continues to live in poverty.
Tumblr media
multi-billion dollar companies have used their design and made profit from it, and yet they have not seen a cent for their creation.
i’ve been friends with emily for years, and i have not once seen them be financially stable the entire time. i’ve seen them homeless, unemployed, starving. right now, they need our help more than ever.
please consider donating to emily’s ko-fi, especially if you’ve used their design to create something and profited from it.

If you want to support Ukrainians, DO NOT donate to Red Cross. Can't speak about their work in other countries, but they're useless in Ukraine. The only trustworthy international organisation I can think of is World Central Kitchen.
Donate to World Central Kitchen
Tumblr media
And it's even better to donate directly to Ukrainian organisations. Here are a few good legit places:
hospitallers.life - "Hospitallers", Ukrainian paramedics on the frontlines
savelife.in.ua - "Come Back Alive", assistance to the army
prytulafoundation.org - "Prytula Foundation", assistance to the army, humanitarian causes
starenki.com.ua - "Starenki", helping elderly people
everybodycan.com.ua - "Everybody Can", helping disabled children, elders and hospitals
uanimals.org - "UAnimals", saving animals

To cope with the harsh reality of our daily life, we find ourselves trying to make the best of food that should otherwise be deemed unfit for consumption. Flour, often infested with weevils and carrying a musty odor, is made palatable only by adding vanilla and cinnamon. Even more challenging is the fact that we must cook using firewood, as basic resources are scarce. This experience underscores our resilience and the harsh conditions we face to provide even the simplest meals.
"In challenging times, we all need the support of others to find the strength to move forward. Cooperation and mutual care are what help us overcome hardships and rebuild hope."

Gardener Heartbroken
Vandals Ruin Garden for Underprivileged People
A gardener who donates her crops to those in need is seeking help after vandals destroyed her land with salt, ruining her harvest for years to come. Carly Burd has a garden in Harlow, England, and she grows fruits and vegetables to share. Everything she reaps from her allotment, she organizes into donation boxes. According to her TikTok, she’s singlehandedly fed 190 people since November, and her…

Here are a few GoFundMes vetted by Project Watermelon that are far from their goals, and have received no donations in several days.
Please consider donating or sharing. If everyone who interacts with this post donates even five dollars, it could make a massive difference for these families. Thank you.

Hello every one ♥️
My name is Shatha, a mother of three children from Gaza 🍉🇵🇸, living through extremely harsh conditions. We have been displaced over 15 times, searching for safety, but to no avail. I have two daughters, Toleen (6 years) and Layan (2 years), and my young son Walid (3 years), who was born with a disability and is unable to walk. Walid used to receive regular physical therapy before the war, but now his condition has worsened due to the current crisis.

Today, we are enduring severe humanitarian conditions, lacking access to food, clean water, and medicine💔. My children need basic essentials like milk, diapers, and clean clothes💔.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My husband also lost his job and source of income in the war, and his workplace was destroyed. He worked in the academic field at the university. 💔💔
Tumblr media
Walid suffered severe burns to his head during the war😓, and also many kidney diseases, and my little girl Layan was infected with hepatitis😓💔 due to malnutrition and polluted water.💔
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have launched a support campaign for my children to provide for these basic needs, especially for Walid, who urgently needs to continue his treatment and receive the necessary medical supplies. So far, donations have been few, and I am hoping you can help us by donating and sharing the campaign. Any help, no matter how small, will make a big difference in my children’s lives. 🥺🙏🙏🙏
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.❤️❤️
