Wildfires are devastating Patagonia. In response, Argentinian authorities are removing environmental protections and raiding Indigenous communities Soraya Maicoñio lives in Mallín Ahogado, a rural area in the Comarca Andina,a region of sparkling rivers, mountains, lakes and lush forests in Argentinian Patagonia. It is an area well-known for its small-scale agriculture, forestry and tourism. In recent weeks, however, the region, which spans the provinces of Rio Negro and Chubut, has been in the news for its large-scale wildfires – and the authorities’ crackdown on the local population. Since January, more than 35,000 hectares (86,500 acres) of forest, farmland and pine plantations have burned. In recent days, several new fires have broken out on the eastern slopes of the Andes. “The fire has been incredibly violent,” says Maicoñio, 52, a Mapuche singer and actor from Chubut. “More than 200 families lost their houses. We also lost orchards, vegetable gardens, animals, vehicles, workshops and cultural and educational spaces.” Hundreds of residents have been evacuated. The southern hemisphere summer (between December and February) is the dry season in Argentina and Chile, favouring forest fires. Intense, arid winds from the Andes and temperatures above the normal range have worsened the situation. In 2021, under similar conditions of drought, high winds and temperatures, the region experienced wildfires that left three people dead, 500 homes destroyed and 14,000 hectares of forest burnt. -But authorities in both provinces have stressed the criminal intent behind the fires, downplaying other factors such as the impact of increasing tourism, pine plantations or inadequate maintenance of the electricity infrastructure. While climate scientists believe rising temperatures increase the risk of wildfires, Argentina’s president Javier Milei has called called the climate crisis a “socialist lie.” Accordingly, his government is imposing budget cuts on its environmental agencies. In 2024, the National Fire Management System budget alone was cut by 81%.

The current situation with climate change and how liberals talk about it is like if you had early stages of cancer, where it was still very much treatable, and instead of giving you any treatment all the doctors were talking to you about accepting death, and giving you pamphlets for the terminally ill, and explaining to your loved ones how to put everything in order for when you die. And when you said it was treatable everyone would either act like you were in denial, or explained to you how impractical any treatment was (chemo therapy, don't you know radiation is deadly). And when they talked about the future they'd talk about one where you were dead, despite the fact that it's still 100% treatable, and every day you don't get treatment it gets worse. And eventually when you tell them "fuck you I want to live" they act like you've broken some unspoken rule.

Remember, even if it's not turned on, plugged in devices and appliances use electricity.
Some examples are Lamps, Fans, Heaters and Chargers.
Unplug what you're not using. Save some energy and money.

can i be fr for a minute?? sending abuse to people online for holding different views than you is not activism and in fact actively hurts your cause. most people are not extreme in their viewpoints, you can give them a new perspective if you're willing to spend some time explaining shit. if someone is saying something you disagree with and you rush in there to condescend to them and call them disgusting and subhuman and dont even TRY to explain calmly why their views are harmful, they're going to shut you out instantly and double down on their views.
most people are simply genuinely ignorant to the issues they're talking about - they just pick their views up from the news and the world around them and express opinions because that's what every person does. if you run in there and tell them they're scum for it, what then? if someone does that to you, are you going to think "maybe i should do some research" or are you going to think "this person is an asshole, im blocking them." a lot of you think you're activists and then refuse to do any kind of actual WORK to support your cause.
#this is not about the isr*el thing even tho thats obviously a huge issue rn#its just a pattern ive observed online#im not saying you have to be kind to people who oppress you dont twist my words#but if youre trying to support any cause and you think calling people names is going to help#youre a fucking idiot lol#people call themelves activists and pro-X cause because they called their opposition dirty c*nts online#how the hell is that meant to help anyone? theyre just going to retreat into their propaganda chambers because you proved what the leaders#of those spaces have been telling them#you can obvs block people if you dont want to deal w them but thats a neutral action. sending abuse harms ur cause.#text#like educating ignorant people is hard work! yeah! its also the entire fucking point of activisim#and if you think its too much effort then just stop pretending you give a shit tbh#like my parents managed to change our neighbour's very xenophobic stance on migrants with a calm conversation#some people will listen and some wont and shes not exactly going out to protests for migrants rights but shes not hostile anymore#and a lot of yall think that isnt good enough but let me tell you it IS good because these things take time!#unlearning things is MUCH harder than learning them in the first place and a lot of people grew up in environments that taught them#very discriminatory and conservative views and its actually not their fault. and its hard to educate yourself differently on something you#have no idea is not true. where do you start w that?

Earth Activist Training
EAT is a permaculture design course run by Starhawk (and a rotating cast of accomplished permaculturists). It's immersive, comprehensive, and beautiful.
Not very many PDCs talk about how permaculture principles can be applied to social movements. And so few retreats have truly nourishing and excellent food. Here's the website; there are a number of educational offerings beyond the main in-person PDC. I encourage you to give it a look if you want to learn more about this amazing field we call permaculture.

Why do conservatives only seem to care about “science” when it comes to invalidating trans people? They don’t care about science when talking about vaccines or environmental issues or germ theory.

Did you know?
That you can be an animal rights activist without being vegan or vegetarian?
That you can believe that the cruelty towards animals in the meat industry is unjust without believing everyone in the world should be vegan/vegetarian?
That you can believe that there are far better, more humane and merciful ways to slaughter livestock than what we currently do without being vegan?
That you can believe that the conditions and environments of animals, farm or pets or wild, should be a priority amongst people without being vegan or vegetarian?
That you can have strong opinions on animal cruelty without being vegan or vegetarian?
That you can be vegan without trying to force everyone else to also be vegan?
(Kudos to thoes who do. Love u)
That you can believe all life, from insects to trees, from land and sea, should be treated with respect- while still also acknowledging that no one is ever going to stop eating meat?
That people are vegans for alot of reasons, and not always, if not rarely, for protest or performative reasons?

Take action with me to ban neonicotinoids (neonics). Neonics are a pesticide that is highly toxic to insect and bird populations. Numbers of bees and birds have declined by the millions because they eat plants that have been treated by this chemical. Birds who eat the seeds of these plants or insects who have consumed this can suffer from convulsions, extreme weight loss, and death. Join me and the PIRG in urging the EPA to ban these pesticides.
