LMAO this is such BULLSHIT. Every single item in the "healthy" cart is the in-store brand while almost every single item in the "junk food" cart is like the MOST expensive name brand. You can get TWICE the amount of generic brand ice cream for a full dollar less than that price. And mac and cheese goes for like, less than fifty cents a box, the cups are just for convenience. Not to mention the "healthy" options from Walmart are going to be measly, watered down proportions because that's how they cut costs. Also what meal are you going to make with all of those random frozen veggies? I'd love to know.
I'd also like to add that the Tai Pei in the "junk food" cart is by no means junk food; it is a fine premade meal with rice, veggies, and meat that can be made at home or on the go and just because it was a pricier item in the freezer aisle when our ill-informed OP was doing their shopping it is by no means an unhealthy "junk food" meal.
Just because I love talking about food and finance so much, here's what you can get for $20 ($21ish but still) at Walmart.
Shopping for junk food: 6 items
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And shopping for healthy foods: 15 items (even decided to splurge a bit on meat!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
See the difference? You can feed a family for at least a few days with $20 shopping healthy while you can maybe feed a single person for a couple days while shopping for junk food.
Now I'll admit, I'm not an expert at shopping for junk. There's a fair chance that there are some foods I could have exchanged to boost the junk numbers. But honestly? I really tried. Aside from great value ice cream instead of hägen dass and ramen instead of the Velveeta cups, I can't think of how to stretch a buck further (and mind you, I work at Walmart so it's not like I'm unfamiliar with the store). But even if I did do that, it still wouldn't compare. Junk food is expensive!

DIY [dirt cheap & probably works better than a] Starbucks Medicine Ball:
Functional teas that I had on hand were:
Celestial Tea Well Organic Ginger Mint
Bigelow Benefits Lemon & Echinacea
Honey, the real good stuff (this is from my cousin's farm)
Lemon Juice 🍋
Sugar Free Peppermint Syrup
Bonus Add on: Young Living Peppermint
Tumblr media
Although the OG diy recipe uses the Teavana brand and a metric shitton of sugar, I am not that boujee and trying to avoid extra sugar... Honey has enough sweetness, but honey also has its own special properties. Use the google, I ain't your momma.
This tea is what I had on hand, and likely bought on sale or clearance. Also...there are a ton of different teas that are specifically blending to aid immunity or cold season. Try varieties by Yogi or Traditional Medicinals if you can find them. Experiment & find what works best for you.
I also don't have the space for a bag of fresh lemons. It is really all about balancing what you have with the effect you want.
I have found that in most of my experiments, I will feel better with any combination of mint, lemon and honey. But if I have to work, a tea that has some caffeine will help me perk up.
And yes, I have to work. I work FT and caregiver FT, I am out of PTO. My FMLA is only if my patient is sick, it doesn't cover my illnesses. But I work from home so... it could be worse. At least I am not infecting people.

Idk if I'm living in an alternate universe or what but I swear the refrain of "buying processed foods is more expensive for less work but buying ingredients is cheaper for a whole lot more food" has literally never been true. Like idk what the deal is at your guys' grocery stores but buying ingredients has always been pretty much the same price as buying pre-made foods, even before the massive price hikes and inflation in the past few years. When I make homecooked meals, the price at the register for all my ingredients is always like $20-30 (sometimes more depending on if I'm buying stuff like a filet or expensive fish but those are special occasions so they don't rly count). Buying an equivalent amount of premade food would cost roughly the same.
Like maybe it is true if you're specifically calculating the cheapest ingredients for the most nutritional value and total volume, but just cooking normal recipes like soup and beef stroganoff and tacos and fried rice for me, the price is by no means low. I'm lucky in that I don't have to worry about how much my food costs but if I did I don't think cooking at home would really save me any money unless all I ate was like, beans and pasta.

Slim Pickins
9/1/24
Ever seen those reels or tik toks that tell you to run to the dollar tree?
Ya'll. Is dollar tree sponsoring just an epic shitton of those videos?
Because I was just there and it was terrible. It was the last of the 3 stores in my vicinity that I hadn't visited yet.
So you know I have some some hauls there before, on the hunt for some healthy shit. Pickles, banana peppers, a hidden gem here and there (True North 4 packs, iykyk).
It is barely worth mentioning today. I did pick up some sf hard 🍬 candies & some little bags of Russell Stover sf chocolates (portion control). The only other notable item was a couple cans of G Fuel. And consumer alert- watch the caffeine content in those. Idk if they all are, but some are 300 MG caffeine.
What else did I get? A 6 pack of pretzels. Again, small bags = portion control. Especially for me with carbs. My activity level is pretty high tho so I am trying to give myself on watching the carbs but.... I am starting to think I have a gluten intolerance from some recent lab work.
I got some drink mixes too, but I am pretty sure they are cheaper at walmart. (Confirmed- $1.08 vs 1.25)
Sf Cherry jello 🍒 4 pack
Some coffee. Jim Beam Bourbon Vanilla small bag.
Green tea.
But I swear I looked for some things that people keep saying to run to the dollar tree for ...and didn't find shit. No fun lotions. No quantity of health food.
You also have to watch out because at $1.25 some items are cheaper at walmart, or in packages too small to be a deal. See the drink packs above and the tuna and salmon below.
I did see a pack of freeze dried strawberries and 1 other freezer dried fruit. But the price point on that should be ... a 6 pack like the pretzels or at least a 3 pack. It was a 1 serving bag.
This time, I knew to pass on the tuna & salmon, spices, and certain other staples. They did have nuts but I passed on those because I have some already and too many nuts can make a deficit become a surplus really fucking fast. And I have been plateaued for a bit now.
The plus side is that the store was well kept and maintained, and it was busy so you know product turn over was high.
I remarked on the store being busy and the cashier said, "Yeah, we are always busy the first of the month." That broke my heart a little because the food picks were pretty damn sparse and like I stated earlier- cheaper elsewhere. If people are on food benefits, those little cents add up and it might mean they don't have transportation to Walmart or a grocery store.
I picked up a couple cans of spaghetti sauce, turkey gravy, & white cheese sauce. I thought about getting some pepper stir fry- which I think is a good price still 🤔 but I think my freezers are full right now.
Alot of their other freezer stuff was .... just pre packaged garbage. I think the pepper stir fry was the only vegetable in sight.
Sometimes saving money means not buying stuff at dollar tree even though all those influencers are highlighting their products. If it isn't a good deal and won't save you time or actual money, it's ok to pass. It's OK to walk to the dollar tree. And be skeptical. Price check.
Also beware of items that have higher prices. I think the reason I used to like them is because I didn't have to think about the price so much just see and grab. But that is when everything was a $1, before the 25% price hike. 🤔 but now they have $3 items and $5 items. Be skeptical!
An example of a time/energy/diet saver is when you are in desperate need of lunch and you are in a sea of fast food places. You see a dollar tree and boom, you could be saved: A jar of pickles, a pack of tuna = $2.50. Spring for a beverage for 3.75 total... that is still beating out most fast food places for a meal... or some of them even a plain ass little burger. Idk about ya'll but without a veggie just a burger doesn't really satisfy me right now.
An "I'm craving something sweet" could be those freeze-dried fruit packs or sf jello, a beef jerky & a beverage. It's totally worth it if it stops you from going into a different store and being inundated by all the various high calorie prepacked garbage.

Choosing the Best Natural Supplements for Your Dog’s Daily Nutrition
As dog parents, we know that a healthy diet is the cornerstone of our furry friends’ well-being. Just like us, dogs need a balanced intake of nutrients to support everything from their energy levels to their immune systems. While high-quality dog food provides the essential building blocks for a dog’s nutrition, adding natural supplements can enhance their daily meals, ensuring they get the best possible nutrients. One standout natural supplement that’s gaining attention is goat milk for dogs, known for its incredible health benefits.
Tumblr media
In this article, we’ll explore the best natural supplements that can complement your dog’s daily nutrition, enhance the impact of healthy dog food, and provide additional support for your pup’s digestion, immune system, and overall health. Whether your dog is enjoying wet food, adult dog food, or senior dog food, these supplements can help elevate their diet and boost their health.
Why Are Natural Supplements Important for Your Dog?
Natural supplements are packed with nutrients that may not be found in every commercial dog food. While the best dog food formulas are created to meet your dog’s nutritional needs, adding the right supplements can help target specific areas of health, such as joint support, digestive health, or immune boosting. These natural supplements can make up for any gaps that might exist in your dog’s food and provide them with an extra layer of support to thrive.
From puppies to senior dogs, all dogs can benefit from natural supplements, especially if they have specific health issues or dietary restrictions. These supplements are a great way to tailor your dog’s diet to their individual needs. Here’s how natural supplements can work with your dog’s existing diet to provide complete and balanced nutrition.
Top Natural Supplements for Dogs
1. Goat Milk for Dogs
One of the most underrated natural supplements for dogs is goat milk. Rich in probiotics, goat milk promotes healthy digestion and supports your dog’s immune system. Its high-quality protein, calcium, and essential fatty acids make it an excellent addition to any dog’s diet, whether they’re on adult dog food, wet food, or senior dog food.
For dogs that suffer from digestive issues, goat milk can help balance the gut flora, ensuring that nutrients are properly absorbed and reducing the chances of upset stomachs, gas, or diarrhea. Goat milk is also easier to digest than cow’s milk, making it an ideal alternative for dogs that are lactose intolerant.
Goat milk also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can be beneficial for dogs with arthritis or those recovering from an injury. It supports joint health and helps manage pain and inflammation, making it especially valuable for senior dogs or active adult dogs.
2. Fish Oil and Omega-3 Fatty Acids
If you’re looking to improve your dog’s skin and coat health, as well as support their joints and heart health, fish oil is an amazing supplement. Packed with omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil helps reduce inflammation, promote a glossy coat, and support overall cellular health. Regular use of fish oil can make a huge difference in how your dog looks and feels.
Omega-3 fatty acids also support brain health, which is vital for both adult dog food and senior dog food. It’s especially beneficial for older dogs to keep their cognitive functions sharp. You can find fish oil supplements in liquid or capsule form, and they are easy to add to your dog’s healthy dog food or wet food.
3. Probiotics for Dogs
Just like in humans, probiotics are essential for dogs to maintain a healthy gut and digestive system. Probiotics help balance the good bacteria in the intestines, which is crucial for proper digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall immune system health. Dogs on wet food or senior dog food can especially benefit from a daily dose of probiotics, as their digestive systems may not work as efficiently as when they were younger.
Probiotics are known to help alleviate symptoms like gas, bloating, and diarrhea. They can also support your dog’s immune system, reducing the chances of infections and illnesses. If your dog has been on antibiotics or is struggling with digestive upset, probiotics can help restore balance to their gut flora.
4. Glucosamine and Chondroitin
For dogs with joint issues, glucosamine and chondroitin are essential supplements to support joint health and mobility. These natural compounds are known for their ability to repair and rebuild cartilage, which is essential for preventing and managing conditions like arthritis. If your dog is a senior or has an active lifestyle, adding glucosamine and chondroitin to their diet is crucial to maintain mobility and comfort.
These supplements can be easily incorporated into your dog’s diet, whether they’re eating senior dog food or adult dog food. They can help slow the progression of joint degeneration and relieve pain associated with arthritis or other joint problems. Regular use can improve your dog’s range of motion, helping them stay more active and enjoy their daily activities.
5. Turmeric for Dogs
Known for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric is an excellent natural supplement for dogs suffering from inflammation, joint pain, or digestive issues. The active compound in turmeric, curcumin, has been shown to reduce inflammation, promote digestive health, and improve overall vitality.
Adding turmeric to your dog’s diet can help alleviate symptoms of arthritis and other inflammatory conditions, making it especially useful for senior dogs. For younger dogs, it’s an effective way to support their overall health and keep inflammation at bay.
Turmeric can be mixed with your dog’s wet food or healthy dog food for a natural boost. If your dog is picky, you can mix it with a little bit of goat milk for dogs to mask the taste and make it easier to consume.
6. Green Lipped Mussel
Green lipped mussel is another natural supplement that’s gaining popularity due to its rich content of glucosamine, chondroitin, and omega-3 fatty acids. This supplement is perfect for dogs with joint issues, as it supports joint mobility and reduces inflammation. It’s also a great source of protein and essential vitamins and minerals.
Green lipped mussels can be found in powdered or capsule form and can be easily mixed into your dog’s food, whether they’re eating adult dog food, wet food, or a homemade meal. For senior dogs, this supplement can provide much-needed support to keep them active and comfortable.
7. Vitamin E and Antioxidants
Vitamin E and antioxidants play a key role in supporting your dog’s immune system and protecting their cells from oxidative damage. These nutrients are especially important for senior dogs, whose immune systems may be less efficient. Antioxidants help fight free radicals in the body and reduce the risk of chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, and cognitive decline.
If your dog is on wet food or senior dog food, adding a vitamin E and antioxidant supplement can give their immune system the extra support it needs. This is especially helpful for older dogs who may be more prone to illnesses and inflammation.
How to Choose the Right Supplements for Your Dog
Choosing the right natural supplements for your dog can be overwhelming, but the key is understanding their individual needs. If your dog is young and active, supplements like fish oil and glucosamine can help support their joints and overall health. For senior dogs, consider adding probiotics, turmeric, and green lipped mussel to support their aging bodies.
When incorporating any supplement into your dog’s diet, start slowly and observe their reaction. It’s always best to consult your vet before adding any new supplement to your dog’s routine to ensure it’s safe and appropriate for their specific health conditions.
Conclusion
Natural supplements are a fantastic way to enhance your dog’s dog food and ensure they’re getting the maximum nutritional benefits. Whether you’re looking to improve digestion, boost immunity, support joint health, or keep your dog’s skin and coat in top shape, there’s a supplement that can help. Goat milk for dogs, fish oil, probiotics, and glucosamine are just a few of the many natural supplements that can elevate your dog’s health.
By choosing the right supplements and pairing them with the best dog food options, you’re setting your dog up for a healthy, vibrant life.
