that post reminded me all over again how annoyed i get with people who don't take hiking seriously when they do it

like wearing shitty shoes or not carrying enough water or thinking that their phone is a good enough emergency flashlight/radio or that they don't need to keep a basic first-aid kit on hand like people. PEOPLE.

i mean, sure, if you're doing a 0.5 mile guided hike on a well-maintained and -traveled trail then you're not likely to need safety gear but if you're going anywhere alone* then you need to be prepared for things to go sideways

*by which i mean "you as a couple/group are alone because hiking solo is extremely and should only be attempted by highly-experienced hikers who don't need to be told to be safe"

like, no, you don't need to prepare for the zombie apocalypse, but you do need to be prepared for someone to slip and sprain their ankle in an area with zero cell service. because that's hardly an outside possibility! a lot of these places have minimal cell service and when you're walking on uneven terrain, slipping and spraining your ankle is a very real threat! and something that can be very dangerous, depending on where you are! and "i slipped and sprained my ankle and now i'm trying to crawl to the nearest pocket of cell service i can find before my phone dies and the sun is setting and i'm now slowly succumbing to hypothermia and/or bears" is a really stupid way to die! when all you needed was a first-aid kit and an emergency radio! and to not be alone, that's another big one

like, there's this sense in a lot of people that we are lords and masters of nature and it can't harm us but that is ridiculously, gaspingly untrue! if you go up against mother nature in a fight, you will lose - or if you win, it will not be un-altered. human arrogance in the face of nature gets hundreds if not thousands of people killed every year, don't be another one of them

in my head it always was more akin to the french 'coté', which doesnt make much sense but at least isnt another count doodoo TT

I always read Kote with the same pronunciation as 1st person singular (or singular imperative) of "koten" 💀

So if anyone ever calls his name ("Kote!“) like that it would sound like they are ordering him to shit himself. Right there on the spot. Tragic that my brain makes this connection but it is what it is. I realize the intended sound of Kote might just be a hard consonant version of Cody, so maybe pronounced like Koh-tee, but I'm too Saxon to bother with the hard consonant surrounded by those kinda strenuous vowels anyway lol. Cody is much more comfy <3

I always wondered, was Wei Wuxian ever aware of the way Jiang Wanyin portrayed him before his death?

I mean, I know that the Jim's were plotting against him anyways but he sure made it worse.

Also, if Jiang Fengmain was able to survive somehow (fully intact), how do you think that would have affected the narrative in your opinion?

I think Wei Wuxian was very clear on Jiang Cheng’s character from the moment they publicly cut ties. They were both willing to maintain the peace (remember, Jiang Yanli’s wedding dress moment happens after the defection) when nothing was happening, but obviously the Qiongqi Path Ambush ruined all that. With that said, Wei Wuxian clearly saw Jiang Cheng at the Nightless City pledge banquet and made no moves whatsoever to protect him from the hoard of corpses he unleashes. The fact that Wei Wuxian never revoked Jiang Cheng’s access to the Burial Mounds settlement, therefore, makes me feel like he was going by the unwritten agreement that they would leave each other alone, and after the ambush, well, revoking access wouldn’t matter in any way. No need to chalk up the oversight to latent affection or negligence; they were already on borrowed time.

On to the Jiang Fengmian thing: I think there would be a lot of moving parts. There’s no way he’d win against the Wen who’d already invaded, so his only chance of survival is to have left with Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng. To do so would possibly lose him the respect of the few disciples he had with him, and Jiang Cheng would definitely hate him for abandoning his mother. Jiang Cheng, himself, might leave the clan and actually return to Lotus Pier to retrieve Madam Yu’s body, or maybe he retains some sense like in canon and does not do that. Wen Ning probably still helps with that, and it’s a debt Jiang Fengmian would likely honor. And if Jiang Cheng didn’t immediately leave after Madam Yu’s death, he’d definitely leave if Jiang Fengmian “lowered” himself to thank a Wen on behalf of their clan and his mother. Wei Wuxian isn’t leaving with Jiang Cheng at all, unless asked by Jiang Fengmian directly (and that’s another can of worms) but if Jiang Fengmian refused to honor his debt to Wen Ning/participated in the kidnapping of the Wen remnants, Wei Wuxian would still defect. Would Jiang Fengmian continue to support and protect Wei Wuxian past that point? Would he have learned his lesson after the Sunshot Campaign and blocked Jin Guangshan’s bid for dominance? Idk, but seeing as every other character outside of a select few is written to stagnate and not learn their lesson after the war, I’d say probably not.
