Not A Book Friday

I’ve read so many of Art Baltazar DC Kids books that I just had to give this movie a try.

It’s a typical sort of superhero movie, except, it’s with pets. It starts with Krypto, who Superman grew up with. But, with Clark starts dating Lois, he doesn’t have the same amount of time for Krypto. And, so, Superman goes to a shelter to find Krypto a friend. Of course, then appears Lex Luthor into the scene. Through his machinations, and a 'co-worker' of his, Lulu, suddenly, all the other pets in the shelter start getting powers too. LuLu, who had been one of LexCorp’s well… guinea pigs, captures the Justice League, and Krypto, well, he eats something that doesn't agree with him. And, so, its up to the other pets team up too to help the Justice Leage defeat Lulu and Lex.

Not surprisingly, I loved this movie. Was it perfect, no, but, as I said, I was primed by all the great Art Baltazar comics that are very much like this. And, I’m a sucker for almost anything with Krypto in it. Also, I feel like comics in general don’t really go into how Krypto feels about the Clark/Lois relationship, at least not comics I’ve read. Ooh, ooh, and another not surprising thing. My very favorite was Merton, the super fast turtle who can't see. She was awesome, Go Merton! And then there was the underlying feeling of 'adopt don't shop' that seemed to run through the movie. Maybe I was imaginging it, or it wasn't actually there, but, especially in the end scenes, it just seemed like that was one of the points of the movie too, second homes for dogs, cats, and even guinea pigs, are awesome homes.

A bunch of animals themed after DC characters pop up in SUPER-PETS SPECIAL: BITEDENTITY CRISIS #1 (2024), including a real cheetah representing, naturally, the Cheetah.

This might also be a reference to Cheetah's pet Chauncey from the DC Super Pets series!

Bruce: Oh, that’s Chewperman, Ace’s favorite chew toy.

Clark: You let Ace chew on a mini me?

Bruce: That’s what it’s made for. If it makes you feel bad, I’ll make one for Krypto too. He’ll love it, right boy?

Ace: Woof.

The following week at the Fortress of Solitude…

Bruce: Why is this toy kept behind a glass casing? It’s meant for Krypto. [takes it out of the casing and tosses it to Krypto] Here boy!

Krypto: [happily chomps on the Batman chew toy]

Clark: Noooo! Don’t! Krypto, let go of Batsqueak!

Bruce: Batsqueak?

Clark: It just feels wrong, Bruce! I can’t bear to let any harm come to Batsqueak. He should be kept safe in his ice cave, not mauled by giant fangs.

Titus, opening the bag: Why is it glowing?

Ace: Have you been seeing Dex-Starr again? I told you, that cat is bad news.

Haley: Who's Dex-Starr?

Alfred: Not relevant. Just help me hide it before our human sees.

Bat-Cow: How about inside the haystack?

Ace: No, it's from a Red Lantern. It could catch fire. Under the floorboards, perhaps.

Alfred: Absolutely not. I was instructed to keep it away from damp environments.

Haley: Why does it matter? Doesn't Damian let you have catnip?

Alfred: Catnip is fine. Damian doesn't want me being around Dex-Starr.

Alfred: It's complicated. Are you gonna help or not?

Titus: I know, Goliath! We can hide it under his bedding.

Alfred: Great idea.

Jerry: *squawks*

Alfred: That's Jerry's signal. Damian's coming. Act natural.

Damian, entering: I thought I would find you here. Titus, your bath has been drawn.

Damian: *looks around*

Damian: What's going on?

Alfred: Uh... meow?

Damian: *shrugs and leaves with Titus*

Alfred: Phew, that was a close one. Remember, guys. What happens in the barn, stays in the barn.

[meanwhile in Metropolis]

Krypto, who was listening: Adding that to the blackmail file.

Jon: What is it, boy?

Krypto: Uh... bark?

Jon: *shrugs and goes back to texting Damian*
