Reverse Parenting: Embracing the Role of Caring for Aging Parents
Children become caregivers for aging parents in reverse parenting dynamics.
A mother has to break the umbilical cord twice: once at birth and once when the child becomes an adult. As we grow older, the dynamics between parents and children evolve. We often find ourselves taking on more responsibilities towards our parents. This shift, known as reverse parenting, is a natural progression where children become the caregivers for their aging parents. Understanding ReverseâŠ

Stuffies
Gn reader
âIce bear noticed your stuffie has gotten deflated. Ice bear wonders if he could replace it as he doesnât think he can fix it this time seeing that itâs quite literally falling apart.â The polar bear held onto the stuffy in question with its patchwork thread from all the repairs. You flinched at this, regressed brain feeling a sense of heartbreak. It felt like a parent telling their kid they were too old to play with toys.
âThatâs not a bad thing, means itâs been loved. Ice bear admires you as youâve somehow filled the stuffy with so much love, itâs bursting through the seams and it canât hold anymore.â Heâd been planning for this moment, his brothers had practiced it with him. Going through different emotions as he figured out the right words.
âIce bear knows how much your stuffies mean to you and didnât want to do it without asking first.â Offering the stuffy to you for one last hug goodbye. Or at least until the new addition arrived. Ice bear treated this process as his little one grieving for a friend. One youâve known for a good chunk of your life, even before you knew regression was a thing. He made sure to stay close by your side, especially around nighttime as he expected a few more night terrors to pop up.
âIcy protec but also attac?â You asked in a small voice, grabbing fistfuls of his fur before letting go. âIce bear would do anything to keep you safe from the monsters.â Putting a night light under the bed so itâd look less appealing. Except for maybe moth man.
âPromise?â Ice bear nodded as they linked pinkies. Giving you his word as heâd never break a pinky promise. A sworn oath between you two.

The Erosion of Extended Family Ties - What to Expect Next
Another vital factor contributing to the weakening of family ties is the diminishing presence of extended family relationships. ChatGPT Acts More Altruistically and Cooperatively Than Humans - Technology Org
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/chatgpt-acts-more-altruistically-and-cooperatively-than-humans-technology-org/
ChatGPT Acts More Altruistically and Cooperatively Than Humans - Technology Org
Modern artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, can mimic human behaviours, but the former has more positive outcomes, such as cooperation, altruism, trust and reciprocity.
Working with a chatbot â artistic impression. Image credit: University of Michigan
In a new University of Michigan study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers used âbehavioralâ Turing testsâwhich test a machineâs ability to exhibit human-like responses and intelligenceâto evaluate the personality and behavior of a series of AI chatbots.
The tests involved ChatGPT answering psychological survey questions and playing interactive games. The researchers compared ChatGPTsâ choices to those of 108,000 people from more than 50 countries.
Study lead author Qiaozhu Mei, professor at U-Mâs School of Information and College of Engineering, said AIâs behaviorâsince it exhibited more cooperation and altruismâmay be well suited for roles necessitating negotiation, dispute resolution, customer service and caregiving.
How should people respond to this information, especially as the future will tell the extent to which AI enhances humans rather than substituting for them?
We now have a formal way to test AIâs personality traits and behavioral tendencies. This is a scientific way to observe how they make choices and to probe their preferences beyond what they say. ChatGPT presents human-like traits in many aspects such as cooperation, trust, reciprocity, altruism, spite, fairness, strategic thinking and risk aversion. In certain aspects, they act as if they are more altruistic and cooperative than humans. To this end, our results are more optimistic than concerning.
What differences did you and your colleagues expect to see between chatbots and people?
Modern AI models are big black boxes. When we compare the chatbots with humans, we can often only compare their outputs. There have been many tests, such as whether AI can hold conversations like humans, write poems like humans or solve math problems like humans, and similarities are found. But these similarities are all based on what they âsay,â which is not surprising as these AI models are all designed to predict whatâs likely to be said next.
Before our study, there wasnât a way to go beyond what they say and understand how they make decisions, which is crucial before we can trust these AIs in high-stake tasks, such as health care or business negotiations. There has been lots of skepticism about how AI would behave in these scenarios.
What future research can be built upon this? Where do we go from here?
Our research benefits from the joint force of computer science and behavioral economics. We bring classic games in behavioral economics into the classic test for AI: the Turing test. We also compare the AIâs responses in these tests to the responses of a diverse population of human players.
One obvious short-term future research is to add more behavioral tests, test more AI models, and compare their personalities and traits. A critical future direction is to educate the AIs so that their behaviors and preferences can represent the diversity of the human distribution (rather than an âaverage humanâ).
In the long term, we hope the study opens a new field âAI behavioral science,â where researchers from different disciplines can work together to investigate AIâs behaviors, their relations to humans (such as how to facilitate their collaboration rather than competition) and their impact on the future society.
What areas would this similarity be useful to people?
It helps people understand when and how we can rely on AIs to help us make decisions. In general, the results should increase peopleâs trust in AI in certain tasks. For example, knowing that ChatGPT is more altruistic and cooperative than average humans could increase our trust in using it for necessitating negotiation, dispute resolution or caregiving.
On the other hand, knowing that its personalities and preferences are much narrower than the human distribution helps us understand their limitations in tasks where the diversity of human preferences is crucial to consider, such as product design, policymaking or education.

I have had these thoughts bubbling away in my head for like...eighteen months or so now (it will become very obvious why shortly) but the discussion in this post has pushed me to write them down: I think societally we HUGELY underestimate how motherhood for primary caregivers, particularly first-time motherhood, can be a source of vulnerability to radicalisation.
There is obviously huge cultural variance here, but for a lot of cis women becoming primary caregiver to an infant in a capitalist Western society represents a time of immense vulnerability because in general you are:
Incredibly sleep-deprived (which has well-documented knock-on effects for your judgement, mental health, etc)
If you gave birth, recovering from a significant challenge to your physical health (even in the best-case scenario)
Isolated from your previous networks and communities of people in full-time work
Completely separated from the context of your prior career goals and achievements
Under huge amounts of stress to learn how to care for an infant (don't get me started on breastfeeding)
And on top of this, you are also be experiencing a huge amount of messaging about how all this is natural, wonderful, something you're meant to do, something you should love doing, and something that you must do for the welfare of their child. It's a huge amount of pressure and life change even when everything goes right and there's very little cultural space to express negative feelings about it.
Any group of people who offer community, support, and affirmation to cis women in this situation are going to have a really good shot at radicalising them into some very weird and dangerous headspaces and in fact we see this happen all the time - think antivaxxers and TERFs. It flies under the radar because of the hazy positive glow that associates with motherhood and babies and also because we don't take the radicalisation of women seriously I guess because they rarely shoot anybody, but...yeah. It is such a vulnerable time!
#people who do not see themselves in the cishetero stereotype#are obviously going to have some separation from this & therefore protection#full confession: obviously in the last year and a half I have done a LOT of midnight Googling about Baby Things#and you know what. very often the top hits are Mumsnet forum threads#which...often contain useful and sympathetic advice#I can so easily see how people get sucked into that#they're not getting people with TERFy shit they're getting them with 'tips for getting your four month old to nap better'#which is the MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE WORLD when your kid is four months old#and then the TERFy nonsense presumably comes later#because that's how radicalisation works

I donât cry during the first five minutes of Up. Mortality comes for us all. If we are lucky, there is someone to hold our hand at the end.
What devastates me is when communication problems or hurt / emotional reactivity get in the way of a relationship between people who want to hold hands at the end.
We live in a society that treats medical care as a for-profit venture and that demands people so much bandwidth to making money for people who (inadequately) compensate their labor to make finding and maintaining to-the-end connection harder. Especially for those of us who donât engage in the hetero marriage and kids script.
Thatâs the context for how much I have cried about OFMD 2.6 and 2.7.

Caring for a loved one is a noble and rewarding responsibility, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding. Many caregivers find themselves struggling with feelings of guilt when considering the option of respite care. Respite care is temporary care provided to a loved one by trained professionals or trusted individuals, allowing the primary caregiver to take a break and attend to their own needs.

The childcare system of a contemporary hunter-gatherer community suggests a major pitfall of the nuclear family, and it could hint at why so many parents in wealthy, Western nations feel burned out. A team of researchers, led by evolutionary anthropologist Nikhil Chaudhary from the University of Cambridge, argues that children may be "evolutionarily primed" to expect more attention and care than just two parents can provide. Investigating the culture of Mbendjele hunter-gatherers, who live in the northern rainforests of the Republic of Congo and subsist on hunting, fishing, gathering, and honey collecting, researchers found a widespread caregiving network. Among 18 infants and toddlers in this community, researchers noticed that each child receives, on average, nine hours of attentive care and physical contact each day, usually from around 10 individuals, but sometimes from more than 20.

Using Deep Learning to Identify Teens Most in Need of Mental Health Support - Technology Org
The personal yet global struggle with mental health may be more visible now than ever before. Yet many people still find it difficult to access the support they need. In Japan, suicide is sadly the leading cause of death for young people.
Researchers, including from the University of Tokyo, have carried out a six-year study to better understand the myriad of factors which can impact adolescent mental health.
After surveying 2,344 adolescents and their caregivers, and using computer-based deep learning to process the results, they identified five categories into which the young people could be grouped. Nearly 40% of those involved were classified as groups with some problems.
Of these, almost 10% lived with mental health problems which their caregivers had not identified. This group were most at risk of self-harm and suicidal ideation. Identifying the factors which may lead young people to suicide and who is most at risk is key to supporting preventive efforts and early intervention.
Talk to teens. According to data from Japanâs Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, suicide is the leading cause of death for boys and men aged 10 to 44 years old, and for girls and women aged 15 to 34 years old. The WHOâs LIVE LIFE campaign sets out several effective interventions for suicide prevention: Limiting access to means of suicide; Interacting with the media on responsible reporting; Fostering life and coping skills in young people; and Early identification, management and follow-up. Last year in Japan, 514 youths and children aged 18 and younger tragically lost their lives to suicide. This was the highest number for this age group since records began in 1978. Suicide is sadly the leading cause of death for people aged 15 to 34 years old, according to data from Japanâs Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.
While adult suicide rates have been generally declining over the past 10 to 15 years, the reverse has been noted for adolescents. Officials speculate that school-related issues, difficult personal and family relationships, and lingering impacts of the pandemic may have contributed to the high number of deaths.
The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies suicide as a major global public health concern, but also says it is preventable through evidence-based interventions and by addressing factors that can lead to poor mental health.
Researchers from the University of Tokyo and the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Medical Science are analyzing data on various problems in adolescence which were assessed both by self and caregivers, resulting in identification of young people who may be at suicide-related risk.
Overview of five groups. Adolescents who fell into the âdiscrepantâ category raised the most concern. In the past, young people who hadnât clearly or consistently shown symptoms of mental health problems had sometimes been overlooked, as discrepancies between informantsâ experiences lead to those problems being underestimated. However, the researchers highlight that monitoring for such discrepancies is crucial to help identify high-risk adolescents. âWe recently found that adolescents who were considered to have no problems by their caregivers actually had the highest suicide-related risk,â said Daiki Nagaoka, a doctoral student in the Department of Neuropsychiatry at the University of Tokyo and a hospital psychiatrist.
âSo it is important that society as a whole, rather than solely relying on caregivers, takes an active role in recognizing and supporting adolescents who have difficulty in seeking help and whose distress is often overlooked.â
The team surveyed adolescents and their caregivers in Tokyo over a period of six years. The participants complete self-report questionnaires, answering questions on psychological and behavioral problems such as depression, anxiety, self-harm and inattention, as well as their feelings about family and school life.
The team also made note of factors such as maternal health during pregnancy, involvement in bullying and the caregiversâ psychological state. The study began when the children were 10 years old, and checked in with them again at ages 12, 14 and 16. Overall, 3,171 adolescents took part, with 2,344 pairs of adolescents and their caregivers participating throughout the full study.
âPsychiatry faces challenges in understanding adolescent psychopathology, which is diverse and dynamic. Previous studies typically classified adolescentsâ psychopathological development based on the trajectories of only two or three indicators.
By contrast, our approach enabled the classification of adolescents based on a number of symptom trajectories simultaneously by employing deep-learning techniques which facilitated a more comprehensive understanding,â explained Nagaoka.

Deep learning, a computer program that mimics the learning process of our brains, enabled the team to analyze the large amounts of data they collected to find patterns in the responses.
By grouping the trajectories of the psychological and behavioral problems identified in the survey, they could classify the adolescents into five groups, which they named based on their key characteristic: unaffected, internalizing, discrepant, externalizing and severe.
The largest group, at 60.5% of the 2,344 adolescents, was made up of young people who were classified as âunaffectedâ by suicidal behavior.
The remaining 40% were found to be negatively affected in some way. The âinternalizingâ group (16.2%) persistently internalized problems and showed depressive symptoms, anxiety and withdrawal.
The âdiscrepantâ group (9.9%) experienced depressive symptoms and âpsychotic-like experiences,â but had not been recognized as having such problems by their caregivers. The âexternalizingâ group (9.6%) displayed hyperactivity, inattention and/or behavioral issues but few other problems.
Finally, the smallest group was categorized as âsevereâ (3.9%) and dealt with chronic difficulties which their caregivers were aware of, in particular, psychotic-like experiences and obsessive-compulsive behavior.
Of all the groups, young people in the âdiscrepantâ category were at highest risk of self-harm and suicidal thoughts. The researchers found that they could significantly predict who would be included in this group based on if the child avoided seeking help for depression, and if their caregiver also had a mental health problem.
The researchers suggest that the caregiverâs mental state could impact the adolescentâs mental health through both genetic factors and parenting environment, such as the caregiverâs ability to pay attention to the difficulties an adolescent might face.
Although this research has several limitations, it still enabled the team to identify a number of risk factors which could be used to predict which groups adolescents might fall into.
âIn daily practice as a psychiatrist, I observed that existing diagnostic criteria often did not adequately address the diverse and fluid difficulties experienced by adolescents,â said Nagaoka.
âWe aimed to better understand these difficulties so that appropriate support can be provided. Next we want to better understand how adolescentsâ psychopathological problems interact and change with the people and environment around them. Recognizing that numerous adolescents face challenges and serious issues, yet hesitate to seek help, we must establish supportive systems and structures as a society.â
