"All of you, get up, we have a job to do." Jason declared, entering the room where several of his men were lazily playing cards.
"And who the hell are you supposed to be, kid?"
"Oh for fuck's--" Jason, glaring at them, puts his hood back on. The modulated voice that growls out is unmistakable. "It's me, dumbasses."
And everyone instantly shoots to their feet, grabbing weaponry.

There are so many tragedies that come into play with Jason's death. From being doomed from the beginning by the writer, to how it happened, to no one ever finding out the truth about Sheila.
But the aspect I want to focus on is his funeral.
Tumblr media
There were only four people attending.
Bruce, Alfred, Jim and Barbara.
Four.
This is sad in and of itself, especially considering that Bruce hadn't even contacted Dick so he wasn't there either.
But also because usually superhero funerals are big. The community comes together.
During Superman's funeral, the Justice League were carrying his casket. When Spider-Man died in the Ultimate universe, the entire church was full, with even J. Jonah Jameson attending to pay his honours.
But I think one of the best examples to compare this to is the death of Bart Allen, aka Impulse aka Kid Flash
Tumblr media
The funeral is in a stadium. All the ranks are full, as shown in the background.
Bart was never meant to be long term, because the plan was always to bring Barry back. Bart was supposed to bridge that gap. Then sales tanked and they chose to kill him off sooner.
He was beaten to death by the Rogues.
So you have the doomed from the beginning aspect, they were both children when they were murdered, they were both in hero outfit and were both killed by a rogue/villain. And yet, Bart got this treatment of being recognised and honored by the hero community while Jason didn't. No big speech, no people coming up, telling tales or paying their last respects.
Just Bruce, Alfred, Jim and Barbara.
And you could make the argument "Oh, but Central City and Keystone love the Flash! They have a Flash museum! Even a Flash Day, honoring the Flash!"
But Gotham is also proud of having Batman. That's their protector, and Robin has been by his side for almost just as long.

i just left my local comic shop. i just finished my last exam so i'm looking for the death in the family books as a little treat. there were none in this shop, so i go up to the register to pay for the couple others i picked up. when i tell the owner (he knows me a little, i'm a regular there) what i just said he just kinda smiled and nodded. i told him that i was really shocked that the whole thing with death in the family was that they let readers vote if robin should die. he laughed again, and NO JOKE said "my bad".
i asked him what he meant. he told me that he not only voted for jason robin to die, but that he campaigned in his little neighboorhood knocking door to door asking people to call in and vote. apparently it was like 50 cents per call back then so he was literally soliciting to kill robin.
when i was, might i say reasonably, surprised by this revelation, he then explained that there weren't really deaths in comic books like that yet. maybe some b or c list characters, but never someone so intergral to the story. so when he voted, he did it more to see what the writers could handle. how would they navigate the death of jason todd? how would the writers continue on writing the batman series, a heavily family infused series.
so the 72 vote margin that actually killed jason might because of my local comic book shop owner. he might have effectively been the reason jason died.

We should talk more about the fact Jason got swarmed and attacked by a mob as Robin, like??? Hello. He had to be left there because the mob was too violent with Batman near. He had to be taken to the hospital.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at those injuries!!
The next time we see him he's forcing himself out of bed and putting on the Robin costume thinking "I've gotta do what I can to help, even if it kills me!"
The next next time we see him he has walked into yet another violent mob
I cannot stop thinking about this story and the effects it probably had on him honestly. Do you think it's made him nervous in crowds, do you think it made him trust others just that bit less. How long do you think he was being attacked before he was found, the scene had cleared. "I've gotta do what I can to help, even if it kills me!",,,,
Just the concept itself! I don't know about you guys but being attacked and grabbed and trampled into unconsciousness sounds absolutely terrifying! Did he black out, still getting hit, thinking he was going to die? Knowing he couldn't defend himself as his injuries to took their toll? At their complete mercy?

1986-87 Legends, issue #2 (the attack), #3 (the hospital), #5 (getting up), #6 (defending heros from another forming mob)
2010 DC Universe: Legacies, issue #6 (flashback panel to Legends moment)
#jason todd#jaybin#jason todd robin#comic reference#we need to talk about and acknowledge this so much more its such a fun bit of information n backstory#and i honestly think its a REALLY IMPORTANT jaybin moment. both for him and readers#batman#dc comics#i never see anyone talk about it which is such a shame honestly#fairly confident this is post crisis jaybin. but of course we are in the evil gray area of actually post crisis - before new backstory#but gonna be honest with you guys here i and actual dc writers take from precrisis jaybin alot anyway because he IS still jason#and adds more original comic time for jason#as long at its not like blatantly contradictory i keep a rather lot of his things#and again we are in the grey area of it#plus he calls himself the new robin in the hospital scene so that probably means something#and none of it at all matters anyway because when it comes to comics you do what you want for forever. thumbs up emoji#this is still important anyway. the “ive gotta help even if it kills me!” haunts me#dare i say i wish we talked more about jaybin time in general. like. the stories from it#all i usually hear is ditf and him pushing or not pushing that guy. its a shame i think jaybin has some really fun stories#i think (i think) scarecrow and mad hatter were rogues he faced the most. DEFINITELY scarecrow#two face too if im counting the mad hatter. +plus importance bc twoface he thought killed his dad#he lets himself be kidnapped by two face saying hes the SECOND robin and then insults the guys car#he dresses up as two face once#he saw scarecrow making highly concentrated fear toxin and dumped it on him 😭#sherlock holmes was in a story at some point#its so fun. augh i need to reread jaybin so so bad its so fun i miss it

Do you think, if Jason never found out about Sheila and subsequently lived, he would have followed Dick’s footsteps and left?
Like, his and Bruce’s relationship was already becoming strained with the whole Garzonas thing and Bruce basically stonewalling him after believing that Jason killed the guy without even looking for evidence
Whether or not Jason seemed eerily cryptic is beside the point
[I know that the whole thing was left in the air but you’d think the world’s greatest detective would bother looking just considering the fact that it concerns his own son]
Then him blaming Jason for the whole thing that came after?
Trust would totally take a critical hit
All in all, I’m not surprised Jason was immediately gung-ho about finding a biological mother who wanted nothing to do with him.
But yeah, if Jason never went through that and thus probably never fell to the Joker’s hand, he probably would have left at some point and branch out with a new vigilante identity
Though I wonder how he would have faired. Because as far as I know, Jason’s run as Robin seemed kinda isolated - he didn’t get to form his own team or be a part of one [He only interacted with the Titans like twice ???]
He didn’t seem to have many friends besides that one pen pal……
Would Dick offer him a helping hand?? Help him get his footing as a independent vigilante
Resources probably would have been minimal. Would Bruce cut him off? I’d like to think he wouldn’t but if Jason’s methods did become lethal…….idk - though now that I think about it, Jason wouldn’t want his money
Bro would be working his way from the ground up

Literally screaming reading this. Show this to my friend, they don't even ship batjokes but even they acknowledge how gay it is. A part 2 maybe?
Ah yes, I love that post too. Sorry to have taken so long, but here's a Part 2 to "Gayest things Bruce has uttered about or to Joker"!
11) “It's me you want -- it's me you've always wanted. Free her and I'll let you have me. [...] All the bullets in all their guns won't stop me from reaching you... the adrenalin of all the years between us will carry me straight to your throat, Joker... and when the bullets finally bring me down... I'll drag you down with me.”
-- Detective Comics (1937) #532
12) “...but that isn't my mission here. It's him. I'm just as obsessed with him as you are.”
-- Batman (2016) #135
13) “Does he recognize me? Does he know who I am? I may never know. I'm feeling a terrible sense of finality... We've been linked to each other for so long, neither of us truly understanding the bond.”
-- Batman: A Death in the Family (1988)
14) “Don't you understand? I don't want to hurt you. I don't want either of us to end up killing the other. [...] It doesn't have to end like that. I don't know what it was that bent your life out of shape, but who knows? Maybe I've been there too. Maybe I can help. We could work together. I could rehabilitate you. You needn't be out there on the edge anymore. You needn't be alone. We don't have to kill each other.”
-- Batman: The Killing Joke (1988)
15) “Joker, you need to remember who you are, you just need to take my hand, and you'll remember your old life... [...] Joker! Take my hand! [...] We can beat this. Together.”
-- Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (2019) #1
16) “I was afraid of what he'd do... when I was gone. [...] I wish he were still alive.”
-- Batman: Damned (2018) #3
17) “I made this wretch... I'll have to mind him.”
-- Batman: Lovers and Madmen (2007)
18) “Is he mirroring my broken psyche with his fake smile? Is the Joker... broken too?”
-- Batman (2016) #128 (I Am A Gun)
19) “If I beat you long enough, hard enough... You'll tell me.”
-- Action Comics (1938) #719
20) “I'm trying to figure out what the Joker was doing naked... does he always remove his clothes first?”
-- Detective Comics (2016) #1000

Jason to Duke is 'I know love for my family still exists within me and it's because my heart is full of you and you are my favorite family and you made me want to live to the truest, fullest i could for myself, for you and for the good when i only saw the bad but that was never you and i've loved you for years far beyond how long we've known eachother and you're my signal of hope and chaos in my shadows of the past and unwelcome order'.Duke to Jason is 'I know my family still exists and it's because you are with me,when i need you, when i want you around, when i need someone to choose me and tell me i deserve to exist even if i'm imperfect and bruised and bite the hand that tries to control me but you treat me like me,not what you want to mold me to be,because what i am is exactly what you want me to be and i could never replace you for anyone else'

Thinking about Jason's death because of his second death-subsequent-return. It's a creepy inverse of the circumstances of Bruce's parents' death. Instead of the Waynes being stolen from, Sheila is a thief. There's a symbolic loss of innocence with the pearls, and a very similar loss of innocence for Jason who gets betrayed. While there was nothing Bruce could do for his parents and he was left alive, Jason still attempts to save Sheila and dies with her. The Waynes' killing has messy consequences, but it happens in an isolated place that's supposed to be familiar to them. Jason's death (while technically has less of an impact) is accompanied by an explosion, and it happens far away from his home and everything he knows. Bruce is the only constant between them, playing a similar role in both deaths.
