Another thing I hate about the AMC show is it's basically made a bunch of normies want to read Anne Rice's weird ass books and then they're shocked and scandalized by the weird material and they treat AR like some kind of supervillain for it.
"The show elevated and improved the source material."
No... no... it didn't do that actually

Interview With A Vampire fandom having another racism crisis because that one popular Armand cosplayer and her white friends took a funko pop of white Louis, the slave owner Louis, to a plantation in Louisiana and basically took selfies and videos and were playing around on a site where slaves were tortured as if it were a funny haha keke moment
That shit doesn’t fly at 9/11 museums, holocaust memorials and sites, why the fuck would they think it would fly at a plantation ? “ the tour guide was very helpful and educated us on the horror of slavery !” and yet you still found it appropriate to play around like it was a playground
This fandom already had racism problems but like… thats just fucking low. The bar for decent human behavior is in hell at this point for fandoms in general. It feels like a competition of “who can go lower” and I wish I could have seen in person how fucking goofy they looked on a plantation tour, with a funko pop of a slave owner, in their stupid fucking cosplays taking photos and and videos and having the time of their lives like they were at fucking Disneyworld while everyone else, black people probably, were there to probably learn the history of the land.
Then had the nerve to double down but when the heat got too hot they did the bare minimum and did a fucking notes app apology of all things. I fucking hate people.

I bring a sort of "everyone should just get in one giant fuck pile" energy that the interview with the vampire fandom doesn't appreciate.

“fiction affects reality” as in fiction makes people become domestic abusers if they see abuse portrayed in media, so abuse should never be portrayed: bad take, hayes code ass logic, not how that works
“fiction affects reality” as in gothic horror tv shows are really good at making people interact with art history: observationally true, very very funny effect.

iwtv casting department: let's have auditions with people from all over the world, so we can cast the best actors regardless of where they're from. iwtv writers: let's use the inconsistencies and contradictions of the original text to tell a story about the malleability of memory. Let's keep the beautiful language of the original text but move the story to a different time period. Let's not hide from the themes of race and sexuality. iwtv costume department: let's make elaborate pieces that reflect the characters identities. Also, lets make suits that fit the protagonists like a glove, and patterned leather shoes (even if they're barely visible). iwtv set design department: let's make a super detailed, super accurate recreation of New Orleans at the beginning of the 20th century. Even the lightbulbs have to be accurate. iwtv actors: let's pour our body and soul into this characters. Let's be sure we know their stories and motivations inside and out.
amc marketing department: let's have a shered social media presence for both interview with the vampire and the mayfair witches. This way we can bury iwtv's podcast under the mw's podcast. Also, let's make an instagram post celebrating alexandra daddario's birthday, but not one for sam reid.

can i ask why armand is your fav character? what qualities make him your fav? genuinely curious :)
not a question i was expecting! im not entirely sure. i just think hes so incredibly rich as a character. every single thing he does, good or bad, hurtful or not, can be explained. he always has a line of logic, or a splinter of trauma that explains perfectly why he does what he does. i think hes such a sympathetic character as well.
more comedically, i think hes very relatable as an autistic person in terms of being a bit weird and off putting. unfortunately i relate to that, lol, i have a bad habit of staring a lot and not talking very much. i think him in his director era in the theatre was genuinely hilarious, and i think he can be so sweet and genuinely romantic.
assad zaman captures him absolutely perfectly as well, and while i can't attribute him to all of my love (example, i watched the movie earlier and atill loved armands character, even though i believe film armand and book/show armand are two seperate characters, but thats another post) he definitely helps bring armand to life.
hes good looking, autistic, weird, has committed several atrocities, and at the end of the day still has the saddest most pathetic wet cat face of them all. whats not to love

Another thing I hate about what the show did to Marius and Armand's relationship is how Marius painting Armand is now being framed.
What was an act of love and devotion in the books and also a way for Marius to express his feelings about Amadeo and their relationship, is now turned into something perverse and objectifying. (And Amadeo gets passed around to other artists who use him sexually, it's gross and I hate it.)
"Centuries ago in a palazzo in Venice, he had tried to capture in imperishable pigment the quality of this love. What had been its lesson? That in all the world no two souls contain the same secret, the same gift of devotion or abandon; that in a common child, a wounded child, he had found a blending of sadness and simple grace that would forever break his heart? This one had understood him! This one had loved him as no other ever had." -TQOTD
It's so romantic in the books I hate how the show reframes it as just another horrible thing Marius did to objectify his sex slave in the show. Marius loved Amadeo so much in the books, he knew his bruised and steely heart, his flaws and rough edges, and he still loved him... He was NOT just keeping Amadeo around as a pretty slave to objectify and fuck.
It just upsets me :/

my opinion on Eric Bogosian remains the same - I do think that he was having a boomer moment (actually tweeting a thing instead of searching himself up on Twitter) but given that there have been serious concerns about antiblackness around IWTV in the past several weeks (and ever since Louis’ casting was announced really) and he did say it in the past (it really doesn’t matter if it was “part of his character” when he’s the actual writer of it) it would’ve been nice to hear him actually address it. AT LEAST SOME OF IT. But it’s unlikely to happen. Same with the Zionist tweet.

It's really unfortunate that a number of people (mostly white people) in the IWTV fandom here on Tumblr seem to have this watered down view of the gothic genre as "cool, sexy monster stuff." I mean, yeah. That's *part* of it, but that's like, a very high school Hot Topic view of it. I mean, nothing wrong with liking the stuff you did in high school or Hot Topic, but it shows a lack of a deeper understanding.
I know I've ragged on Anne Rice a lot here, but I honestly think that this is partly her responsibility. Did she craft interesting characters? Yes. Did she give them flaws? Yes. But does she do a good job of challenging them? Not really. In fact, the way she frames then makes it seem like they're not flaws at all. I can accept the fact that slavery was normalized in Louis time, but I cannot accept the idea if no one in the story challenging it. It is not unreasonable for Daniel to be attracted to Louis during the interview, but at the very least, he should be uncomfortable with his attraction to him. Sometimes bad people are still attractive. That's an uncomfortable truth. But AR doesn't handle it this way. She never addresses it.
So, it's really not hard to understand why her fandom carries such limited views on uncomfortable matter, because her writing didn't challenge them to feel uncomfortable with their attraction to Louis. To Lestat. To even fucking Marius (who I won't get into here. Other people have already written about him here and have done so better than I can). AR made the sexy vampire books, and her fans just go along with all the awful things they do because, hey, they're monsters and it's cool because they live outside human expectations of morality (even though Louis was awful before becoming a monster). AR presents shock value, but doesn't address what's shocking. Her fandom, in fact, seems to take pride in illustrating no shock over what is shocking. This, in my opinion, is an illustration of *failure* to create an effective gothic story.
The show does a much better job, in my opinion, at presenting something gothic. I, a Black biracial woman of the audience, should not be attracted to Lestat. But I *am.* I shouldn't be attracted to Louis, but I *am.* I shouldn't be looking at their family dynamic with Claudia in her earlier days as a vampire through heart-shaped lenses, but I *do.* And it's uncomfortable. It's supposed to be. And I think Daniel's character does a good job of bringing the audience back into the horrible reality of the situation and causes us to check ourselves.
And I think white fandom really does a disservice to Jacob Anderson *AND* Sam Reid by trying to argue with Black fandom over the subject of race. Racism is a central theme in this version of the story. But they don't want us to talk about it, because they're uncomfortable with it. They'd rather pretend it doesn't exist and doesn't need to be discussed. But it's *supposed* to make them uncomfortable. They're just not used to seeing the benefits of being challenged, because AR never did. And unfortunately, they're missing out in a very fulfilling part of enjoying the story because they want to keep themselves in a little bubble where they can pat each other on their backs for not being shocked by shocking things and never growing as people.

Look, Lestat can drop dead and Louis can move on from him instantly and he would still NOT get back with Armand. Not in a billion years. Not the guy who planned the public lynching of his daughter. Armand KILLED Claudia. He wrote and directed the play that climaxed with BURNING Claudia. He wanted to do it.
The same man who could only get into Louis's pants after he openly and overtly threatened Claudia's life and Louis slept with him to protect her.
There is no love, trust or anything left between Armand and Louis. It's delusional and distasteful to even think otherwise. The writers can't possibly get these two back together, even as FRIENDS, without looking like absolute hacks.
