Version One: the sexy vampire who could ruin you (and that’s hot)

This characterization of Astarion is the most frequent reading I’ve seen. People who characterize Astarion like this tap into his manipulative side, the seductiveness and possessive charm the PC sees in him in early game or even in Ascended!Astarion:

Astarion: “Here’s my little treat with their cheeks all flushed. You will come to my bed tonight, won’t you?”

Astarion: “Hahaha! Don’t be stupid, darling. You’re mine, remember?”

In these characterizations, he often continues to sexualize himself or you, or is portrayed as constantly in control of the romantic atmosphere.

Why this is effective:

1. He has power and agency in this version, and uses them to his advantage. It plays into extremely popular romantic tropes, seen frequently in places like the “BookTok” community on TikTok - featuring dark, dominant romantic interests who take charge and overpower romantic or sexual scenarios.

2. Prior knowledge of the “sexy vampire” trope. Vampires have long been seen as creatures of allure and dangerous desire. Drinking blood is seen as sexy, sensual, and intimate. Inherently, this primes Astarion for interpretation that aligns with preexisting sexualization of vampires and fantasy power imbalance.

3. His background as someone who spent 200 years seducing people gives basis to the idea that seduction and extremely pointed flirtation is his default, even when in a genuine relationship.

4. His response to his trauma - the performative, emotionally unavailable lack of vulnerability - reads as confidence and domination (and again, recalls classic BookTok tropes). The intrigue in turn makes him appear more attractive in a heteronormative, exaggerated way than a male character who is more emotionally open (see: Wyll or Gale).

5. Perhaps most importantly: This is the exact version of himself Astarion actively tries to convince you is real in game.

Astarion becomes easy to sexualize in highly simplistic ways because he already plays into multiple pinholes of typical “dark fantasy” tropes. He presents himself as an object of desire, and it’s easy to believe him.

Even with full context of his story and arc, his presentation is so practiced and effective that many real life players fall into the trap of believing the performance over the actual person underneath.

And while this version does capture some aspects of Astarion’s character, it fails to align with what we see in game when he feels truly safe.

Character reality:

1. While Astarion does demonstrate control over the romantic narrative early on, portraying him as constantly confident and in control undermines the vulnerability we see when he realizes he truly wants a relationship with the PC (romantic or otherwise):

- Lines from his Act 2 confession after killing Yurgir:

Astarion: “You-…you’re incredible. You deserve something real. I want us to be something real.”

Astarion: “…I don’t know what to think. I don’t know what I want.”

- He tells you: “I want…something real.” Because, to him, the seduction isn’t real. It’s not his actual wants, it’s not who he is when he’s being genuine. He tells you it was all a performance either way.

2. Astarion clearly does not view vampirism as sexy, and is disgusted at the premise. This is most clearly demonstrated in the interactions with Araj Oblodra:

Araj: It’s not for sale, but it’s yours if you bite me.

Astarion (to Araj): “I will have to decline.”

Astarion (to PC): “Are you actually asking me to do this? Trading me for some potion?”

Astarion (to PC): “You could have asked me to do the same [as Cazador] - to throw myself at her, what I wanted be damned. But you didn’t. And I’m grateful.”

- His condition, to him, is a curse, not another thing to be sexualized. He emphasizes to you that it is important to him not to be used for his body again, which leads directly to the next point:

3. While Astarion spent 200 years seducing people, that was not by choice, and he clearly did not take pleasure in it. He openly tells you that he operated that way because he was only desired for his body:

Astarion: “I spent two hundred years using my body to lure pretty things back for my Master. What I wanted, how I felt about what I was doing, it never mattered.”

- It’s important to mention here that he directly tells you sex and being sexualized is not something he’s authentically comfortable with in a real relationship at the moment.

Astarion: “Even though I know things between us are different, being with someone still feels tainted. Still brings up those feelings of disgust and loathing.”

- In a relationship where Astarion is genuinely loved and valued - he would be able to drop the act because he knows he is loved for more than his body. Seduction is no longer a requirement for intimacy, because he is already aware his partner loves him for all of him.

4. Astarion’s allure as a “mysteriously intriguing trauma-ridden individual” disappears as soon as you gain his trust. While he is slow to open up, once he does, he is generally vulnerable with the PC - not bouncing back and forth between completely closed off and open book. His lines towards the end of the game when romanced, are generally sweet and heartfelt rather than gritty.

Astarion: “Nothing special of course. You’re only the first person who I truly care for.”

Astarion: “You are perfect, every time.”

Why does this matter?

While portraying Astarion as dominant and sexually aggressive plays into some of the lines he displays in game, it misses the fact that the point of his arc is that the seductive aspect is primarily a protective mask. He is naturally theatrical - but the flirtation and prominent sexuality are illusions for control, not the true self.

The whole point is that’s who Astarion wants you to think he is, and he’s good at it.

- It isn’t how he treats the PC when he’s in a genuine romantic relationship.

- It isn’t how he treats the PC when even just given genuine friendship.

- But it is how he presents himself and an extremely convincing performance if you only get to know him on a surface level. Which is common, because of the fact that Astarion tends to have a lot of fans who know him through online content without having played the game.

Ironically, the character whose backstory is based on the trauma of being oversexualized is in fact frequently oversexualized by the fan community. While the “hot manipulative vampire” version does have origins in his surface personality, it isn’t the full story of who he is.

It leaves no room for how the game shows us Astarion would genuinely love - uncertainly, awkwardly at first, stripped of performance or romantic expectations.

The mischaracterisation of the characters in this game is probably the worst i've ever seen in a fandom

People don't even have the slightest grasp of a character's depth, and often boil them down to one or two shallow things that aren't even a part of their character in the first place

Ichika is only seen as "boring" and "plain", when she's probably the most realistically written character in the entire game

Saki is only ever used for stupid ruikasa angst AUs and scenarios

Honami is actually not mischaracterised that much, but she's the most forgotten character

Shiho is always boiled down to " A GIRL WITH SHORT HAIR AND MASC DRESS STYLE = TRANS" when she literally just dresses slightly more masculine than the other girls

Minori is probably one of the worst ones, she's only ever seen as a "haruka simp/lesbian"

Haruka is just "the girl that minori has a crush on" or "penguin lover". I haven't even read past the first few MMJ events and even i know that she's more than just that.

Airi is just a "tsundere", and while her character kinda is about that, no one ever bothers to explore her character further

Shizuku is a "clingy siscon" who's a creep for shiho

Kohane is always called a "pick-me" or "mary sue", both of which are literally not true. It just shows how ignorant people are

An is always boiled down to just ship discourse

Akito is just a "ginger", never anything more. No one reads akito lore.

Toya is so infantilised by the fandom, it's actually insane. It makes my skin CRAWL when someone refers to toya as "my little baby boy 🥺". HE'S NOT A CHILD, HE IS (nearly) A GROWN ASS MAN.

Tsukasa is just boiled down to ruikasa. His whole character has been stripped away just for stupid ship AUs

Emu is "dumb and stupid". If people actually read the story then they would know that emu is actually incredibly intelligent and she only acts silly to make people happy

Nene "gets in the way of ruikasa"

Rui is the worst case of mischaracterisation i've EVER SEEN in a fandom. And i've been in the genshin and mouthwashing fandoms. His fans are so genuinely creepy, constantly sexualising him (ik he's 18, but people should keep their freaky shit to themselves) and making wierd AUs of him. And of course, that sick person who made the cannibal yandere rui fangame (i hope there's some kind of legal issue with that game that allows sega to get it removed). HE IS AN OURPLE GUY WHO LIKES ROBOTS AND SHOWS NOT A SEX-OBSESSED YANDERE CREEP FOR TSUKASA

Kanade is probably the second worst case of mischaracterisation in a fandom that i've seen. People are constantly infantalising her and have completely stripped her character down to "aww poor sopping wet cat who can't even do anything for herself" when kanade has been shown over and over and over and over and OVER to be incredibly independant and brave

Mafuyu also has it bad (tbh all of niigo have it pretty bad), she's just the "mommy issues girl" and she's often boiled down to just ships and memes (not saying it's bad to like ships and memes, but just sometimes it goes a bit too far)

Ena doesn't have it that bad from what i've seen, but she's always "rude to akito" when she literally just does normal sibling stuff with him? (NEVER trust a mf who likes akito but hates ena)

And mizuki. I'm not even gonna go there.

About the whole tiredsn0w situation…

I have recently been made aware of this whole situation in which tiredsn0ws essentially getting harassed. As a close friends of hers, I feel obligated to say something, however  I won't reveal my identity for my own sanity.

Most of the matter I will be commenting on stems from @sneakysnekbetch ‘s blog.

CW for mentions/discussions of bullying, fetishisation, sexualisation, racism, pedophilia etc.

I didn’t scroll as far on the blog, so the screenshot order will be what is newest.

First of all, sn0w has acknowledged that the drawing may come off as sexual but is not drawn to be. I can see how it’s uncomfortable but at the end of the day, the artist didn’t intend for it to be weird. You can find it weird, but wouldn’t you say the person who made the work knows more about it than you? Rhetorical. 

Second of all, to address the third and fourth image added in the first screenshot: it is so incredibly important to note that SCP-049 has BPD in this canon. He is heavily inspired by someone with BPD who Snow knows herself. The fixation/dependency/obsession that comes with having an FP is not weird just because it is platonic or familial-adjacent. Same for the last image. One of the tags was quite literally, ‘don’t tag as ship’, meaning it isn’t romantic:

Saying you ‘need someone’ is not an inherently sexual thing.

The problem with all your claims is that you leave out a shit ton of context and exaggerate what you do present.

What is depicted in the screenshot is not a tantrum, but a personal opinion that was phrased in a rather long way. Someone being non-sharing or not wanting to interact with ships is perfectly fine. I myself block SCP-049 x OC/SCP-035 shippers because it makes me uncomfortable. Likewise, this is just someone stating a boundary. Oh no! This person doesn’t like to see ships! Because of personal discomfort! 

Not to mention that Sn0ws discomfort with SCP-049 x SCP-035 stems from the fact it creates personal distress with her and, in canon, is considered abusive (See: That’s not love, Isabel.)

This isn’t bullying. Unless you provide contextually relevant details, it won’t be bullying.

Obviously, even if it isn’t bullying, it is still perfectly valid to feel upset from getting comments that aren’t 100% supportive of something you create. I’ve been there myself, but to call it bullying is wrong.  

Instead, that entire response just seems constructive.

Again, this doesn’t seem butthurt, rather just clarifying? You just love to blow things out of proportion, Snek.

Also, it is SO ironic how you talk about ‘’Multiple canons’, yet you’re the person who complains about SCP-049 acting a certain way in one canon?

We also see SCP-049 being extremely paranoid and obsessive with his ideals in the article. you  know what else? We also only see a bit of his character in the article. There are many ways to flesh out SCP-049s character and lore. Not everything has to be article-accurate. Especially because the entire deal with the SCP: Foundation is that there is no true canon. Go figure.

Overall, I agree with anon.

I agree that the first and latter image are odd, but those are incredibly old and also have been deleted for a good reason. The BBC one… yeah, extremely uncomfortable and weird. Again, deleted for a good fucking reason. Do I think an apology would have done better? Yeah. But still, deleted for good reason.

The second drawing, however… is just not sexual at all? Seriously, so many of your arguments boil down to, “I THINK IT IS SEXUAL EVEN THOUGH IT ISN’T!” and it is so embarrassing. So much of SCP-6118s character revolves around mental illness (that the author also has), so why are you so upset that mental illness is depicted realistically and, by proxy, uncomfortably? Get over it.

I will reiterate my point— the artist knows their own work better than yourself. But you don’t seem to understand that concept, as shown here:

Again, that art is not sexual at all. It is someone in restraints. A soldier, no less. Restraints are so commonly used in non-sexual ways in literally so much media. You’d know if you stepped outside of spaces that portray such things as sexual.. Same with objectification. It is almost like soldiers are seen as living weapons rather than humans. You know, almost like they are being objectified. 

It is almost like Sn0ws writing is literal psychological horror and focuses on the consequences of abuse, mental illness and the like. 

Seriously, this one in particular is a you problem. It is no one’s fault but your own if the first thing you think of is sexual stuff. Actually embarrassing. 

You can so absolutely find a song choice weird, but again, Sn0w said she explained her intent with the drawing SEVERAL times. Not to mention that it is so incredibly common to interpret songs that are romantic or sexual in a completely different/platonic way. Trying to explain to someone what THEY meant when THEY made THEIR work is so cringe.

It is almost like a ton changes in a whole year and that there is a reason Sn0w distances herself from her old work and chose to rewrite it. Not to mention that sn0w has said the opposite about infantilisation of SCP-6118: 

She has expressed cringe and discomfort for most of her old works.

Key word: teenage. One makes and does things that are incredibly weird and uncomfortable and regrets them later on during teenhood. Sn0w has drastically changed since her old works. Here is a full overview of her thoughts regarding her old works:

Also, pointer: SCP-6118 is asexual and aromantic, not gay. Tiredsn0ws version of SCP-049 is asexual and aromantic. Tiredsn0w herself is asexual and aromantic. Aromanticism is very present in her new work. To add onto my point about SCP-6118 being SCP-049s FP (taken from rev. 10 from the scp sandbox) and their relationship being not-romantic:

Actually, none of her characters dynamics are written to be romantic:

I just had to save this one for last. Do you know how absolutely fucked up it is to compare someone to a literal fucking pedophile? A groomer? Snek, you literally forced Sn0w to reveal extremely personal and traumatic details just for her to prove she isn’t, but you don’t care about that and instead keep persisting, and for what? I will not share screenshots out of respect for sn0w, but you know very well. You should be ashamed of yourself.

In conclusion, most of this boils down to people not understanding aromanticism and personality disorders in writing and making up their own interpretations of what someone meant with their work while also invading their privacy.  There is a severe lack in understanding of actual story and thought process. Her work is not intended for a general audience and instead for  people with mental illness and those willing to sympathize with the grimmer aspects of it.  

And also, to Snek:  your arguments are not constructive, they are contextually spotty and so chronically online it makes my head hurt. Your weird usage of condescending titles (i.e. babygirl, bro, etc) aren’t cool or a good ‘got-cha’, it is incredibly uncomfortable and cringe to see. Do some internal insight on why you perceive so many things as fetishistic or sexual, because at this point, it is literally just a you problem.  Do better.

Also, a note about something tiredsn0w (and I, minimally) have noticed:

Micro aggressions are not okay, Snek. And neither are ignorance and performative actions. 

And lastly— leave tiredsn0w alone. I block people who I think are weird also. The block button is right there, it’s free and it is available for a reason. If I can do it, so can you. 

As per my personal opinion, I think that if someone has expressed distaste for their old work and wishes to disconnect themselves from it, then that is okay and should not be held over their head. The artist knows their work better than others. Even when intent is explained, it goes in on one ear and out on the other.
