Today, I feel like coming to Astarion's defense, despite claims like "he's a heartless jerk who only approves of the most sadistic and cruel choices." First of all, that's not true, and secondly, he's far more complex than that, but…

I was thinking about Chessa, the little Gur girl turned vampire spawn. About how she tells herself to resist the beast inside her. About how the instinct for violence, inherent to being a vampire, takes over, and how "I'll kill you" becomes an automatic phrase on the lips of a child who not only abhors what she has become but should embody the very image of innocence. And about how – perhaps the saddest and most painful part – she can no longer distinguish her desire to reunite with her family from the hunger that would drive her to ravage the very people she loves. It’s an incredibly powerful image, a deep and clear message. It perfectly conveys what it means to be a vampire: how perceptions shift and how difficult it is to resist impulses, no matter how good, virtuous, or even pure one might have been before the transformation – as innocent as a child.

It’s true that Chessa is a relatively young vampire spawn, newly created, and therefore lacking experience in terms of self-control. But this gives us an idea of the impulses underlying Astarion's actions and reactions. For him, it’s objectively difficult to behave like a "normal" person, even if we set aside the 200 years during which Cazador shaped him into what he is (something the vampire lord even boasts about—though if we delve into all the implications, the discussion would become too complex and lengthy, so let’s set that aside for now). So, it’s no wonder that Astarion approves of violence, bloodshed, or some of the more cruel courses of action. It would be stranger if he didn’t!

Is it a good thing? No. However, from my perspective, it’s not something you can entirely blame him for either. It’s in his nature, a bit like a cat sadistically toying with a mouse. Let’s appreciate the fact that the guy tries to behave as civilly as possible and integrate with his fellow misfits. He does his best within the limits of his nature!

Astarion: With this super serious face, I shall write a ballad about how I’m actually cute and cuddly. What rhymes with I am loving and brave? Oh, right, with I'll bring you red roses on your grave!
