Tav is an Elf, Gale is human. For a while, they completely ignore the fact that Tav will be there long after Gale is gone, and it doesn’t feel that dramatic at all, with the orb. Back when they first got together, it was obvious how limited their time would be. Weeks, months at best. And after all, this is war. Time stops being a certainty for anyone involved. So when they talk of “going home” or “when all of this is over” it tends to be in this limited, kind of vague timeframe – the furthest either dares to go is “next winter”.

It’s almost strange that there is a next winter, and then another and another. It almost feels as if they got married so soon so they could make up for the time they thought they’d never have. Sometimes, they can laugh about it.

But then come the other days, the ones that remind Tav that with each passing year, they remain unchanged, while the silver in Gale’s hair slowly begins to outnumber the brown, how the lines around his eyes deepen. It claims him slowly, and Tav can't help but fall for him over and over again. How they love it, the memory of this man, changing, witnessing this brief flicker of light amidst the vast existence ahead of them, and knowing deep down that there will never be another like him. They had this life together, as Tav had quietly begun to accept in his later years, and it was so much more than they could have ever dreamt of. It was a love meant to last and outlast a lifetime.
