Craziest advertising flaw Iā€™ve seen in my life is: itā€™s impossible to look up ā€œspider catcherā€ or even ā€œspider catcher for arachnophobesā€ without EVERY. SINGLE. PRODUCT. having a blown up picture of a spider in it.
#absolutely fucked imo#even articles that line up a few of the products either: 1) blatantly have pictures of spiders in the article#or 2) donā€™t give any warnings that links will go to pictures with giant spdrs in them#šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜#Iā€™ve seen maybe 1 spdr-catcher advertisement that doesnā€™t have a giant realistic spdr in it#mypost#itā€™s a relatively niche problem (ik ppl are scared of spdrs on the reg. but Iā€™m talking abt my phobia which comes with like. visual and#physical hallucinations + bone chilling fear + bodily reactions I canā€™t control lol)#but JESUSSSS IF I LOOK UP ā€˜spdr catchers for arachnophobesā€™ THERE SHOULD AT LEAST BE SOME ARTICLES AND PRODUCTS THAT DONT FEATURE FKCN SPDR#PICTURES!!!!!! šŸ¤¬šŸ¤¬šŸ¤¬šŸ¤¬#have asked ppl in my life to help me look it up b4 but they just donā€™t look that hard šŸ˜#found one years ago that kindof works (is like a mini-vacuum. the nozzle is long but the handle is too close to the holding chamber imo.)#but 1) I had to re-tape the holding chamber bc wjdhiwhsiwujduwhw [traumatic redacted experience that is easily guessable]#and 2) itā€™s fckn old now and is not working well anymore. which is a liability bc ong I still have this phobia and no matter how pissed I#am abt it. and no matter how much ā€˜exposure therapyā€™ I have.#I still canā€™t sleep in my room/go to the bathroom if thereā€™s been a big one in there šŸ‘ ESP if they never got caught#freaking myself out writing abt this šŸ‘šŸ™‚ā€ā†•ļøšŸ˜”#bc Iā€™m freaked out bc there was one in my room last night and itā€™s still missing so idk maybe Iā€™m sleeping on the couch again tonight sheug#ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ

URGENT RECALL ON PHILLIPS CPAP DEVICES
Tumblr media
If you use a Phillips CPAP device, check if yours is affected by the recall here! I thought mine was a different version until I double checked on the website. There's also a lawsuit going around because of the reason for the recall.
The best explanation I've found is that there's a foam piece somewhere in there that throws off particulates into user's lungs and is causing possible lasting and permanent damage. Especially to the lungs. They're replacing them, but a lot of user's are affected so the estimated wait period for a replacement isn't very fast.
Be sure to check your device and contact your doctor if you've been affected!

Canā€™t tell if Iā€™m so anxious because of drug withdrawal or itā€™s just because I have a bad brain šŸ˜“
#I took buspar for about 4 nights then had to stop because it put me on edge#first night without it and Iā€™m hit with the same feelings again#just sad and hopeless and my nerves feel sick#I had thought there wasnā€™t supposed to be any real withdrawal from that stuff#so maybe this is just me being sad#quick rant: I feel so hopless and alone and scared#itā€™s 4:30am and I know thereā€™s nothing I can do right now about it so I should just chill out#brains suck#just go to sleep!#I have my first therapy session tomorrow/today so weā€™ll see#and Iā€™m realizing now I really need to bite the bullet and apply to some jobs#any jobs. even if Iā€™m afraid my hearing will go out and Iā€™ll fuck up working#I NEED to get out of this house more. I NEED money. I NEED some hope for a future.#I want moneyyyy so I can go out to eat and take my brothers to the movies and help my mother with bills#I canā€™t just stay awake all night suffering. I need to be productive.#ian I swear you will feel so much better with a purpose#even if that purpose is just to work a register for a few hours a day#itā€™ll be okay#we can do this. weā€™ll talk to the therapist tomorrow. weā€™ll call our doc and bitch about our meds. weā€™ll apply for jobs#weā€™ll shower and eat and go out in the sun and itā€™ll be okay#baby steps baby#get a job. get money. buy a burger. find someone to kiss once or twice.#I can do this#I feel everything falling apart and fading away and I have to fight that#Iā€™m fighting it now just verbalizing this and itā€™s helping#itā€™ll be okay ian!#life can still be beautiful!#youā€™re afraid of losing everything well then fucking grab it hold it do what you can#Iā€™m so fucking scared but I have to try#text

Mitochondrial Dysfunction Drives Cognitive Decline
Introduction
Mitochondria, often referred to as the powerhouses of the cell, are crucial organelles responsible for energy production through adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis. Beyond their well-known role in energy metabolism, mitochondria regulate a wide range of cellular processes, including calcium homeostasis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and apoptosis. When mitochondria malfunction, the consequences can be far-reaching, especially for energy-intensive organs like the brain. Recent research highlights mitochondrial dysfunction as a central factor in cognitive decline, contributing to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimerā€™s, Parkinsonā€™s, and Huntingtonā€™s disease. This article explores the mechanisms by which mitochondrial dysfunction impacts cognitive function and discusses potential therapeutic strategies.
The Brain's Energy Demands and Mitochondrial Function
The human brain, despite accounting for only about 2% of body weight, consumes approximately 20% of the bodyā€™s energy. Neurons, the primary cells of the nervous system, rely heavily on mitochondrial ATP to sustain synaptic activity, ion gradient maintenance, and neurotransmitter synthesis. Efficient mitochondrial function is critical for maintaining neuronal health and connectivity, which are foundational for learning, memory, and other cognitive processes.
Mechanisms of Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Cognitive Decline
Reduced ATP Production: Mitochondria produce ATP through oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) in the electron transport chain (ETC). Damage to ETC components, often caused by genetic mutations or oxidative stress, can reduce ATP production. Energy-starved neurons may fail to maintain synaptic function, leading to cognitive impairments.
Excessive ROS Generation: While ROS are natural byproducts of mitochondrial activity and play roles in cell signaling, excessive ROS can damage mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), proteins, and lipids. This oxidative damage exacerbates mitochondrial dysfunction, creating a vicious cycle that contributes to neuronal degeneration.
Impaired Calcium Regulation: Mitochondria help buffer intracellular calcium levels, which are critical for neurotransmitter release and synaptic plasticity. Dysfunctional mitochondria may fail to regulate calcium, leading to excitotoxicityā€”a condition where excessive calcium causes neuronal injury and death.
Mitochondrial Dynamics: Mitochondria constantly undergo fission (division) and fusion (joining) to adapt to cellular demands and maintain their integrity. Imbalances in these processes can result in fragmented or overly fused mitochondria, impairing their function and transport within neurons.
Mitochondrial Transport Defects: Neurons have long axons and dendrites that require efficient transport of mitochondria to regions of high energy demand, such as synaptic terminals. Dysfunction in mitochondrial transport mechanisms can disrupt synaptic activity and contribute to cognitive decline.
Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Neurodegenerative Diseases
Alzheimerā€™s Disease (AD): Mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark of AD. Amyloid-beta plaques and tau tangles, characteristic of AD, have been shown to impair mitochondrial function. Elevated ROS levels and reduced ATP production exacerbate neuronal loss and cognitive decline in AD.
Parkinsonā€™s Disease (PD): PD is associated with mutations in genes like PINK1 and PARKIN, which regulate mitochondrial quality control. Impaired mitophagyā€”the process of removing damaged mitochondriaā€”leads to their accumulation, contributing to dopaminergic neuron degeneration and motor as well as cognitive deficits.
Huntingtonā€™s Disease (HD): In HD, mutant huntingtin protein interferes with mitochondrial dynamics and function, resulting in energy deficits and increased oxidative stress. These mitochondrial abnormalities contribute to the progressive cognitive and motor decline observed in HD patients.
Diagnostic and Therapeutic Approaches
Biomarkers of Mitochondrial Dysfunction: Advances in molecular biology have identified potential biomarkers, such as altered mtDNA levels, ROS, and metabolites associated with mitochondrial pathways. These biomarkers can aid in early diagnosis and monitoring of neurodegenerative diseases.
Pharmacological Interventions:
Antioxidants: Compounds like coenzyme Q10, vitamin E, and MitoQ target mitochondrial ROS, reducing oxidative damage and preserving mitochondrial function.
Mitochondrial Biogenesis Enhancers: Agents like resveratrol and PGC-1Ī± activators promote the production of new mitochondria and improve mitochondrial health.
Calcium Modulators: Drugs that stabilize calcium levels, such as memantine, may protect neurons from excitotoxicity.
Gene Therapy: Gene-editing tools like CRISPR/Cas9 offer potential to correct mtDNA mutations or enhance the expression of genes involved in mitochondrial quality control. For example, boosting PINK1 or PARKIN expression could improve mitophagy in PD.
Lifestyle Interventions:
Dietary Interventions: Ketogenic diets and intermittent fasting have been shown to enhance mitochondrial function by promoting efficient energy utilization and reducing ROS.
Exercise: Regular physical activity stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis and reduces oxidative stress, offering neuroprotective benefits.
Sleep Optimization: Adequate sleep is essential for mitochondrial repair and the clearance of damaged proteins, such as amyloid-beta.
Future Directions in Research
Understanding the interplay between mitochondrial dysfunction and cognitive decline opens new avenues for research and therapy. Emerging technologies, such as single-cell transcriptomics and advanced imaging, allow for detailed exploration of mitochondrial dynamics in neurons. Additionally, the development of mitochondria-targeted drugs and nanotechnologies holds promise for precise therapeutic interventions.
Conclusion
Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a pivotal role in driving cognitive decline and is implicated in the pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative diseases. Addressing mitochondrial health through targeted therapies, lifestyle modifications, and early diagnostic measures offers hope for mitigating cognitive impairments and improving quality of life. As our understanding of mitochondrial biology deepens, so too does the potential for innovative treatments that could transform the landscape of neurodegenerative disease management.
