I really want to learn how to sew, but I'm very overwhelmed. I'm afraid of practicing on most things for fear of messing them up and wasting them. I'm really the kind of person who needs someone teaching me and available to answer my questions, but I don't have anyone for that and there's several reasons I'm apprehensive about finding a class (the most rational of which are my lack of income and COVID, but social anxiety is also a factor).

I know there's guides and videos online, but I always get so overwhelmed and usually don't know where to start because all my ideas are abstract, abstract to me specifically (because I don't know how fabric construction works), or difficult and/or risky enough to scare and/or confuse me out of wanting to do it.

Does anyone have tips for teaching yourself to sew? How do I practice without being wasteful?

Anyways!!! Here are my shitty battlevests that no one asked for.

(And yes, my camera sucks and I can't make patches for shit, I can't sew to save my life, I don't know who lets me wear this trash out of the house).

I've had this vest for years. I thrifted a denim jacket, cut off the sleeves and dyed it black. The studs came on it already!

Most of the patches are handmade!! That horrid little "punch your local nazi" patch was made when I was broke as hell and angry as fuck, right as I was getting into politics properly. She's so ugly but I love her.

I sadly haven't made or bought anything about punk bands yet for the vest :/ Can you tell I have no idea how to find my local scene? lmao.

I got most of the pins from protests and pride, a few from Hot Topic, I honestly don't remember which ones. The Queer chevron one was handpainted. The top two back patches are from Spirit Halloween.

It definitely needs more patches on the front. I'm thinking of embroidering things on it too.

Here's my newest baby. Not entirely sure what to do with it yet, I just put all these on recently. I haven't handmade patches in a while, but I'll do something for this eventually. Nothing on the back yet. Mostly just spare bits and bobs in my pin box.
