The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Best Paving Stones in Saskatoon
When it comes to improving the appearance and functionality of your outdoor space, paving stones are an excellent choice. Whether you're planning to design a stunning driveway, patio, or walkway, selecting the right paving stones can significantly enhance the overall look and durability of your project. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about choosing the best paving stones in Saskatoon, including key considerations, the various types available, and how JD’s Paving Stones can assist you in making the ideal choice for your needs.

Why Choose Paving Stones?
Paving stones are a great option for homeowners looking to enhance the curb appeal, durability, and functionality of their outdoor spaces. Here are some reasons why they’re a popular choice in Saskatoon:
Durability: Paving stones are built to withstand the test of time, even in challenging climates like Saskatoon’s harsh winters. They are highly durable and resistant to cracking, making them an excellent choice for driveways, patios, and walkways.
Aesthetic Appeal: With a diverse range of colors, shapes, and textures to choose from, paving stones can elevate the look of any outdoor space. Whether you're aiming for a classic, modern, or rustic aesthetic, there's a paving stone style that perfectly complements your vision.
Easy Maintenance: Unlike concrete or asphalt, which can crack and be costly to repair, paving stones are low-maintenance. If a single stone becomes damaged, it can be easily replaced without the need to redo the entire surface.
Eco-Friendly: Paving stones facilitate proper drainage, helping to reduce water runoff and prevent erosion. This makes them an environmentally-friendly option for your home and the surrounding landscape.
Types of Paving Stones in Saskatoon
There are various types of paving stones available in Saskatoon, and the right choice for you will depend on your specific needs and design preferences. Explore some of the most popular options of Paving Stones:
1. Concrete Pavers
Concrete pavers are among the most popular types of paving stones. Made from a blend of cement, sand, and aggregate, they come in a wide range of colors and shapes. Affordable, durable, and versatile, concrete pavers are an excellent option for nearly any project.
2. Natural Stone Pavers
Natural stone pavers, including limestone, granite, and sandstone, provide a distinctive and timeless appearance. Each stone is unique, offering natural variations in color and texture. Although natural stone pavers are generally more expensive than concrete options, they can add an elegant and luxurious touch to your outdoor space.
3. Clay Pavers
Clay pavers, crafted from fired clay, are renowned for their rich color and unique texture. They offer a classic, traditional look that works particularly well with older homes or rustic settings. Highly durable and resistant to fading, clay pavers are a great long-term investment for your outdoor space.
4. Interlocking Pavers
Interlocking pavers are designed to fit together perfectly, creating a strong and stable surface that’s ideal for high-traffic areas. Popular for driveways and patios, these pavers offer a durable solution that can handle heavy weight and frequent use.
5. Permeable Pavers
Permeable pavers are designed to allow water to flow through, helping to reduce runoff and prevent puddling. As an eco-friendly option, they’re particularly beneficial in areas with poor drainage or for homeowners who want to minimize their environmental impact.
How to Choose the Right Paving Stones
Selecting the right paving stones for your project involves considering several important factors. Here are some tips to help you make the best choice in Saskatoon:
1. Consider the Purpose
Start by considering the purpose of your paved area. Are you installing paving stones for a driveway, patio, walkway, or pool area? The type of paving stone you choose should be suited to the specific needs of the space. For instance, driveways require durable stones that can support the weight of vehicles, while a patio may benefit from more decorative stones that enhance its visual appeal.
2. Match the Style of Your Home
The paving stones you choose should enhance the overall style of your home and landscape. For a modern, minimalist design, sleek concrete or interlocking pavers might be the best option. Alternatively, if your home has a more traditional or rustic feel, natural stone or clay pavers may be a better match.
3. Consider Climate and Weather
Given Saskatoon’s challenging weather, it's important to select paving stones that can endure freezing temperatures and harsh conditions. Concrete and natural stone pavers are well-suited for colder climates, as they can handle freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or deteriorating.
4. Choose the Right Color and Texture
Paving stones are available in a variety of colors, from warm earth tones to cool grays and blues. When choosing paving stones, consider the color of your home’s exterior and landscape. Lighter-colored pavers can create a more open and airy feel, while darker tones add depth and richness to the space.
5. Plan for Maintenance
While paving stones are generally low-maintenance, they still require some care to keep them looking their best. For example, natural stone may need occasional sealing to protect it from stains and weathering. Be sure to consider this as part of your long-term maintenance plan when choosing your paving stones.
Conclusion
Selecting the right paving stones in Saskatoon can feel like a big task, but with the right information and guidance, you can make a choice that will enhance your outdoor space for years to come. Consider the purpose, style, climate, and maintenance requirements of the paving stones you choose. It’s also a good idea to consult with a professional to ensure you're making the best decision for your project. 06/04/24 - Lago Vista, TX - OUR FIRST YARD PROJECT - Building the pool was the first of many yard projects. That was the pool crew. Now it’s our turn and our first phase will be landscaping all around the pool and pool patio areas starting with covering up the dirt area between the pool patio and sidewalk off the main patio. When it’s done we’ll have a little garden below the main patio wall and three big paving stones with a combination of Mexican beach pebbles seen pictured and brown rock filler between and around them. It’s an involved process. First, there’s a lot of weeding and raking which invariably uncovers more weeds and their root systems. Then you spray the dirt with herbicide to kill whatever’s left. Then, we cover the ground with cardboard to act as a weed barrier. Then you lay down some sand where the paving stones will be to keep them stable and to prevent cracking. And finally, we’ll lay down the three big paving stones and fill in everything else with small rocks. We’ll have to get a picture when we’re done to give you a better idea as to what we’re talking about. So far, I’m enjoying my new hobby. That’s good because it will be a few years before it’s all done.
