Riverside Adventure with Family: Photos, Fun, and Unexpected Art

Last Sunday, my family and I decided to spend some time by the riverside, mainly so my husband could enjoy his bird photography—and squirrels too! The weather was just right, with a mix of sunshine and a few clouds scattered across the sky. Peaceful river I had this idea in my head: while my husband focused on capturing wildlife through his lens and my son played nearby, I’d do some sketching.…

Jasmine: (Does a ghostly call around a campfire) “¡Ayyyy miiiissss hijooooos! ¿Dónde están mis hijoooooosss?”

MacCready: (Puts his hands over his ears) “StOoOoOoOp!”

Jasmine: (Has her hands out in front of her as she moves around) “¡Quiero mis hijooooos! ¿Dónde están mis hijos?”

Piper: “I have NO idea what you’re saying, kid- but it’s freaking me out!!!”

Danse: (Is as white as a ghost at his spot by the campfire)

X6: (Says nothing while shuffling on his own two feet, hands in his pockets)

MacCready: “Can’t you just… Tone it down a notch or two?”

Jasmine: (Throws up her hands) “It’s Halloween!!! It’s suppose to freak you out!!! That’s the point!!!”

Piper: “After all the spooky scares we pulled on each other during the prank war- we all are a bit tender!!! So give us a break! Now we have to worry about some vengeance filled Mexican lady coming after us!”

Jasmine: (Rolls her eyes) “¡Cobardes! Y’all are a bunch of sissies! I’ve been hearing this story since I was born and so had most of the kids my age in my neighborhood.”

MacCready: “And I’m pretty sure you kids weren’t living off a gallon of coffee and three hours of sleep all the time!”

Deacon: (Comes out from behind a bush dressed in a white nightgown and a long dark wig) “OoOoOoOoOoOo!!!” (Slowly moves towards the campfire, the smoke machine he set up earlier adding extra dramatic flare)

Jasmine: (Points and gasps) “¡La Llorona!”

MacCready, Danse, and Piper: (Scream bloody murder in sync)

X6: (Stands there stock still as his soul silently leaves his body)

Nick: (Comes running over) “WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?!?”

Everyone: (Dives behind RoboDad for protection)

Jasmine: (Runs up and puts her arms around his waist, staring up at him innocently) “Papi- La Llorona wants to take me away and drown me! So you hafta protect me!”

Nick: (Heavy sigh as he picks the teen girl up) “Not the vengeance ghost lady again- haven’t you told enough of those scary stories?”

Jasmine: (Huffs) “No- I haven’t told everyone about El Cucuy yet.”

Nick: (Glances behind him at the trembling adults) “Maybe hold off the scary stories until after Christmas…”

Deacon: (Waves his hands around some more) “OoOoOoOoOo!”

i know that ep12 with its sunbathing scene at the market place is known as one of the most romantic scenes in the show and i dearly love it too BUT HAVE U EVER LAID EYES UPON THE RIVER SCENE AT THE START OF EP12 BECAUSE AAAA

I bet Nick donated/sold most of his belongings right before he moved to California. Clothes, furniture, accessories like ties, watches, etc, books, little knick knacks. Most of his remaining dinnerware cause he had donated the others after his divorce was finalized and he didn't think he needed all of it. While this was clouded by his anger and his sense of defeat, he also really felt like he needed to have a clean slate. He needed to let go of the past. Maybe he donated even more things after he moved that he had placed on a "purgatory" list because he thought he wanted to keep them then found he would be fine without them. He would find new things in California that didn't have memories attached to them. He would buy new clothes. He would keep looking ahead.

When he first moved, his apartment was very minimalist but he liked it. Over time, he filled it with things he picked up and bought that held new memories, that did not hurt to look at. Things that did not remind him of what he lost. Maybe it was easier to move on by doing this. Maybe it wasn't. He was glad he did it either way.

Maybe one day, he realizes being a PI isn't feeding his soul or his spirit. He wants more. He wants to feel like he's making a difference again. He wants to help people. A friend mentions how their girlfriend works as a geneticist on cold cases. Nick asks to speak with her and she gives him all of the information he could possibly need. He applies to graduate programs, briefly wonders if he'll have to temporarily relocate to Sacramento to go to UC Davis. Fortunately, he's able to stay in Southern California. He chooses a forensic science program at San Diego State and a genetics program at UC San Diego, and he's on his way.

When he thinks about New York, the sting isn't there as much as it used to be. He feels settled. He feels okay. When he sits on the beach to watch the sunset, wearing a SDSU hoodie and feeling like a college freshman rather than a graduate student, he smiles. California was a blessing in disguise.

Even when life and the job knock him down, Nick will find a way to get back up again. He always does.

doggy update. i went to the shelter again yesterday bc after like two weeks of daily checking the dog i wanted had still not been posted up for adoption. he IS still there, his name is Sawyer, and he HAS been neutered (!!!) but I am now waiting for him to get some dental work. I was so scared about that because he has a really fantastic snaggletooth but the guy said it was to take care of some other teeth on his underbite and the snaggletooth will remain. but however it's a low priority dental order and the dentist is only there weekly so it might be ANOTHER week or two until i can try to adopt my dog. it's FIRST COME FIRST SERVE NO RESERVATIONS so i gotta get there early enough the morning after he's posted to make sure nobody else can take my beautiful idiot boy who i love so much from me.

all he wants to do when he sees me is press his whole body against the cage doors to try to lay on me which doesn't work but DOES make me tear up every time. he's my best friend and i would die for him and if anyone else ends up adopting him ill consider violence.

the zomboid fit . went out to loot an ice cream store and got bitten twice on my right arm so i decided fuck it and attempted to burn down some houses to be cool but it was raining and i Forgot about that so it did nothing . caught myself on fire after running into that little market area . a constant stream of failures for that girl

before that i left all my clothes and stuff for the next Clone Of Myself to take over bc i dont make entirely new worlds lol . anyways shoutout 2 boots and clothes expanded for the awesome shoes . . . one of the mods ever

I came back alone from Tainan yesterday to go to a rope event in the evening, while my friend carried on to Hualien. Back to the quotidien, I told myself- until today I was in such a woeful state that I had to find and visit a doctor to explain that I suspected I'd dislocated a rib at said rope event. It took some googling in Chinese to figure out where to go, but in the end there was a small orthopedic clinic that did x-rays just down the street, with no queue and only $30USD for the doctor + x-ray + medication without insurance. He seemed wholly unfazed by my tale of bondage misadventure and reassured me that I'd only pulled a muscle between the ribs, which should recover in 4-6 weeks if I take it easy. "It will hurt when you sneeze or go to the bathroom," he elaborated. "Yes, that's precisely why I'm here," I admitted. (There are many pains I can overlook and endure, including the acrobatics currently necessary to get up from bed, but some things are sacred.) Maybe in the meantime I need to take up a more sedate hobby, like knitting, or birdwatching...
