I'm finishing up my holiday projects and starting to look forward to the creative directions I want to explore in the new year. I'm feeling the urge to return to a longtime interest of mine: the beautiful, complex, mysterious, comforting, awe-inspiring, ordinary world of lichen. It's been my photographic subject (see above- all photos by me), my artistic spark, my aesthetic model, my philosophical companion, and even my spiritual inspiration.

One of my holiday projects involves modeling lichen in a very literal way, out of materials like clay, cloth, paint, and paper, attempting to approximate its real-life appearance. Building those models has been satisfying, but it's also made me very curious about how I could carry the spirit and significance of lichen, its biological and conceptual character, into work that's less literal-minded. I'm not sure exactly where I want to go with that, but I'm excited to find out.
