Senator Richard Russell and President Lyndon B. Johnson
Collection LBJ-WHPO: White House Photo Office CollectionSeries: Johnson White House Photographs
This black and white photograph shows President Lyndon B. Johnson looming over Senator Richard Russell of Georgia.  They appear to be in a room at the White House.  A portrait of Thomas Jefferson is hanging on the wall over the fireplace.  The president stands very close to the senator in a clearly threatening manner.

Are there any tapes of lbj not being gentle with the johnson treatment?
You bet there are!
My favorite is this phone call with Senator Richard Russell of Georgia. Senator Russell had been one of Lyndon Johnson's mentors in Congress. When Johnson arrived in Washington, he quickly recognized that Russell was a lonely bachelor and workaholic with no close friends or family, so he ingratiated himself with Russell, invited him to meals and holidays at the Johnson home so that Russell felt like he was part of the family. LBJ relentlessly sucked up to Russell and treated him as a father figure throughout Johnson's time in Congress, even after Johnson became Senate Majority Leader (LBJ did the same thing with powerful House Speaker Sam Rayburn).
When John F. Kennedy was assassinated, the relationship between LBJ and his longtime mentor quickly changed. In the days following the assassination, LBJ formed the Warren Commission to investigate the President's murder, and he was determined to have Russell be a part of the Commission, but Senator Russell hated Chief Justice Earl Warren, who LBJ put in charge of the Commission. Russell kept trying to beg off of serving on the Commission for various reasons -- not knowing that, while he was speaking on the phone to LBJ, Johnson had already officially released the names of the Commission's members to the press. (Which led to this great exchange: RUSSELL: "Mr. President, please..." LBJ: "No, it's already done. It's been announced." RUSSELL: (Shocked and stammering) "You mean you gave..." LBJ: "Yes, sir. I gave the announcement, it's already in the papers...")
So we have the audio of this remarkable phone call from November 29, 1963 between Senator Russell and LBJ. If you listen to the entire phone call, you hear LBJ go from 0 to 100 with the Johnson Treatment -- he begins with flattery and heartfelt appeals to Russell's patriotism before making it clear (in the segment of the phone call posted below) that he's not really asking Russell; he's telling him that he's going to be a part of the Commission, making it clear that the dynamic has changed and that President Johnson is the most powerful person in the world and not afraid to prove it. The crazy thing is that, at the time of this phone call, LBJ had only been President for exactly one week. He hadn't even moved into the White House yet! But this is where we get this quintessential Johnson Treatment moment:
"You are my man on that Commission and you are gonna do it. And don't tell me what you can do and what you can't because I can't arrest you and I'm not gonna put the FBI on you, but you're goddamn sure gonna serve, I'll tell you that!"

Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957)
My rating: 6/10
This one has a pretty cool monster and moves at a decent pace, but man, have these people never heard of denouement?

THE THING (1982) Grade: B
Loved the script. The special effects haven't aged well, but doesn't distract from the plot and characters. Great ending as well.

Old Hollywood & DC, an unrealistic casting, part I
(More details at the end, cool movies from the actors mentioned in parentheses)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hal Jordan: Richard Arlen (Wings, Beggar's of Life) – the puppy charm and the overwhelming confidence... it's all there, Arlen is also one of the guys in the first gay kiss in film history in Wings, in which he interprets a pilot, I don't think I need to say more
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lois Lane: Rosalind Russell (My Girl Friday, The Women) – I mean... it's impossible not to see the resemblance after watching My Girl Friday in which Russell interprets a brilliant journalist going into increasingly insane situations... it's one of the best comedies ever made and very Lois Lane coded
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
John Stewart: Sidney Poitier (Edge of the City, The Defiant Ones) – Neal Adams used Poitier as an inspiration to model John so this is technically cheating, but look at him! Poitier would not only be perfect for the role in looks but in talent too
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Green Arrow: Errol Flynn (Gentleman Jim) – I admit I'm not a Flynn fan and I'm also not very big on Ollie either, but I do think these two match, Flynn also interpreted Robin Hood and his dramatic role in Gentleman Jim would fit the more drastic moments of Ollie's life
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sinestro: Conrad Veidt (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, The Hands of Orlac, Different from the Others and anything else you can find with him in it) – Veidt is actually more known for inspiring the creation of the Joker for his film The Man Who Laughs, but he's way more than that, a talented artist, a true queer ally and a babe who would make an outstanding, overdramatic and cunty Sinestro
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zatanna: Louise Brooks (both her G.W. Pabst films are great, and Beggar's Life - with my Hal Jordan from this list) – Brooks made only a handful of films and while they're great, her strong personality in real life is what fascinates me the most, her mysterious beauty, expressive looks and dramatic range would make her an ideal Zatanna, even though her career was very short in real life
This list was inspired by this post (thanks for the idea @forthegothicheroine), it's a very anachronistic imaginary scenario, but I still followed some rules to come up with it, a) to include actors who were mostly active from the 1920s to 1970s b) who not only match the DC characters for their looks, but would also have the range to interpret them in their pre-crisis versions, so the feeling is as important as the aesthetic here c) to only include characters and actors I already had some contact with, by watching the films and reading the comics. This is only part I because there are still so many cool characters and actors I like left, but for now I'm happy with this

Normally I don't plan my reading in advance, because I simply follow whenever my fancy leads me, but this challenge seems fun! 25 books I want to read in 2025 - let's go.
(I've been missing the classics recently, so this list is a bit classic-heavy. Also I ended up being unable to keep it to 25. Oops.)
Color coding:
pink = fiction
green = nonfiction
An asterisk means it's a book I already own in physical form.
As I read books on this list, I will italicize them.
1. Willa Cather - My Ántonia
2. Gabriel García Márquez - One Hundred Years of Solitude
3. Timothy Snyder - On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century
4. Han Kang - Human Acts
5. Geraldine Brooks - Horse
6. Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone - This Is How You Lose the Time War
7. Ruth Kinna - The Government of No One: The Theory and Practice of Anarchism
8. John Steinbeck - The Grapes of Wrath
9. Virginia Woolf - A Room of One's Own
10. Leslie Feinberg - Stone Butch Blues
11. Mary Doria Russell - The Sparrow
12. Banana Yoshimoto - Kitchen
13. Howard Zinn - A People's History of the United States
14. Betty Smith - A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
15. Fyodor Dostoevsky - Notes from the Underground
16. Upton Sinclair - The Jungle
17. Jorge Luis Borges - Labyrinths*
18. Olga Tokarczuk - Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead
19. Akwaeke Emezi - Little Rot
20. Naomi Klein - No Logo
21. Hengameh Yaghoobifarah - Ministerium der Träume
22. Kim de l'Horizon - Blutbuch
23. Yaa Gyasi - Homegoing*
24. Susanna Clarke - Piranesi
25. E. M. Forster - Maurice
26. Richard Adams - Watership Down
27. Ursula K. Le Guin - The Left Hand of Darkness
28. Henry James - The Portrait of a Lady
29. Mikhail Bulgakov - The Master and Margarita
30. Frank Herbert - Dune
Additionally, I'm going to tag on a second goal list. My "currently reading" pile has become way too huge, because I have a fickle heart and tend to hop around from book to book (or, as Bertie Wooster would say, I "flit and sip" like a butterfly). So I'm aiming to finish at least five books that I already started in 2024:
1. Albert Einstein - Essays in Humanism
2. Daniela Dröscher - Lügen über meine Mutter
3. Priscilla Murolo & A. B. Chitty - From the Folks Who Brought You the Weekend
4. Frantz Fanon - Black Skin, White Masks*
5. Simon Blackburn - Think: A Compelling Intro to Philosophy*

* MY BEST FRIEND IS A ROCKSTAR: (tw: death) muse a & muse b have been best friends since they were kids and grew up together. throughout their childhood, muse b had always told muse a about his plans to become a famous musician and as he grew older, became more and more determined to make those dreams come true. when they both hit their teen years, feelings eventually grew and the two were head over heels for each other but neither of them was ever able to admit it. they were both terrified that the feelings would be unrequited or that it would ruin their friendships so just imagine the angst of them seeing each other with other people and FGHDFG. anyway, when muse b finally turns twenty-one, he decides to move to hollywood to make his dreams come true, and muse a stays in their small hometown. they keep in contact with one another but as time went on, muse b becomes a huge rockstar with his band and their contact start to drift but they always had each other in their thoughts, wishing they were closer to one another. a few years pass and they still speak but it’s not like before. muse b was hugely successful and enjoyed the life he was now living but always felt like something was missing. that someone was missing… it’s not until he gets a distraught call from muse a telling him that her mother died does he rush on a private jet and comes home to her. after helping her arrange the funeral and being there for her through her grief, he suggests that she comes on tour with him and the band. wanting to run away from everything and everyone in her small town, she agrees. queue cute ass moments on the tour bus, traveling the world and falling in love like they did when they were young. add drama, angst ( because they’re both still dumb and won’t admit to their feels) stadium tours, TENSION!!!, groupies, etc, etc.
