Senator Richard Russell and President Lyndon B. Johnson
Collection LBJ-WHPO: White House Photo Office CollectionSeries: Johnson White House Photographs
This black and white photograph shows President Lyndon B. Johnson looming over Senator Richard Russell of Georgia.  They appear to be in a room at the White House.  A portrait of Thomas Jefferson is hanging on the wall over the fireplace.  The president stands very close to the senator in a clearly threatening manner.

Are there any tapes of lbj not being gentle with the johnson treatment?
You bet there are!
My favorite is this phone call with Senator Richard Russell of Georgia. Senator Russell had been one of Lyndon Johnson's mentors in Congress. When Johnson arrived in Washington, he quickly recognized that Russell was a lonely bachelor and workaholic with no close friends or family, so he ingratiated himself with Russell, invited him to meals and holidays at the Johnson home so that Russell felt like he was part of the family. LBJ relentlessly sucked up to Russell and treated him as a father figure throughout Johnson's time in Congress, even after Johnson became Senate Majority Leader (LBJ did the same thing with powerful House Speaker Sam Rayburn).
When John F. Kennedy was assassinated, the relationship between LBJ and his longtime mentor quickly changed. In the days following the assassination, LBJ formed the Warren Commission to investigate the President's murder, and he was determined to have Russell be a part of the Commission, but Senator Russell hated Chief Justice Earl Warren, who LBJ put in charge of the Commission. Russell kept trying to beg off of serving on the Commission for various reasons -- not knowing that, while he was speaking on the phone to LBJ, Johnson had already officially released the names of the Commission's members to the press. (Which led to this great exchange: RUSSELL: "Mr. President, please..." LBJ: "No, it's already done. It's been announced." RUSSELL: (Shocked and stammering) "You mean you gave..." LBJ: "Yes, sir. I gave the announcement, it's already in the papers...")
So we have the audio of this remarkable phone call from November 29, 1963 between Senator Russell and LBJ. If you listen to the entire phone call, you hear LBJ go from 0 to 100 with the Johnson Treatment -- he begins with flattery and heartfelt appeals to Russell's patriotism before making it clear (in the segment of the phone call posted below) that he's not really asking Russell; he's telling him that he's going to be a part of the Commission, making it clear that the dynamic has changed and that President Johnson is the most powerful person in the world and not afraid to prove it. The crazy thing is that, at the time of this phone call, LBJ had only been President for exactly one week. He hadn't even moved into the White House yet! But this is where we get this quintessential Johnson Treatment moment:
"You are my man on that Commission and you are gonna do it. And don't tell me what you can do and what you can't because I can't arrest you and I'm not gonna put the FBI on you, but you're goddamn sure gonna serve, I'll tell you that!"

Peter Gabriel, I/O
New music Wednesday
This musician has consistently captivated audiences through the years, and his latest musical creation resonates on various positive fronts. The album, developed over decades, stands out as some of his finest work. What sets this release apart, making it truly exceptional, is that the journey itself isn't the focal point of the final outcome. Unlike previous works, there's a notable absence of restlessness; instead, a sense of acceptance pervades, lending the production a subtle yet compelling strength that intensifies with time.

A respect can give a musician a comeback. To give you an example – Gil Scott-Heron's influence meant his fans could offer him another chance. Yes, XL Records' Richard Russell signed him and the result was one of his best albums. One could call that his own American Recordings with Russell being his Rubin. But wait, there was more – the LP was then remixed by another musician who is slowly gaining a similar respect, i.e. Jamie xx. His We're New Here recontextualized Heron's comeback into a different shape, while he also honored the singer whose web remains more vast than many give him credit for. You see, I would be brave enough to claim Gil Scott-Heron might be one of the major sources of hip-hop, yet more on that on some other occassion …

On August 10, 2018, a Horizon Air De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400 was stolen from Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (Sea–Tac) in Seattle, Washington. The perpetrator, 29-year-old Richard Russell, was a Horizon Air ground service agent with no piloting experience. After Russell performed an unauthorized takeoff, two McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle fighters were scrambled to intercept the aircraft. Sea–Tac air traffic control made radio contact with Russell, the sole occupant, who described himself as a "broken guy, got a few screws loose, I guess." About 1 hour and 15 minutes after takeoff, Russell crashed the aircraft on lightly populated Ketron Island in Puget Sound, killing himself.

How I sacrificed everything to beg Russell T Davies to canonize Richard E Grant's Doctor
Several years ago, when it was announced that RTD would be returning to Doctor Who, this trend started of people commenting on his photos "Like this comment if David Tennant is coming back," "Like this comment if Donna is coming back" etc.
So I decided to comment: "Like this comment if you're going to canonize Richard E Grant's Ninth Doctor." And so, he liked my comment. And then he blocked me. And for years now, when I tell people that RTD blocked me on Instagram I have to stop and explain the whole story.
Anyways, last night this happened:

That's an image of Richard E Grant in a lineup of all the TV Doctors, including Hurt and Jo Martin. According to people who worked on the show, it's a special photo taken of Grant just for this scene.
So thank you Russell, it was worth it.
Incidentally, I just want to explain that I was a big DW fan before 2005, so I saw Scream of the Shalka at age 6 and was really dejected when Dad explained it wasn't going to continue. I've long head-canoned that the Richard E Grant Doctor is out there somewhere, with Time War shenanigans accounting for it all. Here's my custom Shalka Doctor:
