Thank you for this
I was only 4 years old when Bush was re-elected, so I have no concept of what this was really like. My first memory of politics is learning that America had just elected its first black president, and of course I was still too young to fully understand the historical significance of that, but I think growing up in that era gave me this false sense of security that things were headed in a good direction and the possibility of things going to shit didn’t even cross my mind.
I mean why would they, right? I was 15 when gay marriage was legalized in all 50 states, and before then, as a middle class white kid growing up in the suburbs of Massachusetts, I wasn’t even thinking about politics. We had a black president who cared about marginalized communities and implemented policies that helped everyone. As an LGBTQ+ disabled person with a female body I felt safe, and I couldn’t even really grasp the concept of not feeling safe in this country. (I know how ignorant that is now. I know that no matter who the president is, some people will never have the luxury of feeling safe, but that concept didn’t really click until I was older)
This feels like uncharted territory, but maybe that’s because I’ve only been on this earth for 24 years and my earliest memory of a presidency is one who’s main concern was building a safe community and providing for those in need. It’s been difficult to sort of shift that perspective and understand that some people who want to be president only want that position not to be a public servant, but to hold power and authority over others for the fuck of it. I want to believe that most people are basically good, but a lot of people simply aren’t and one of them just got elected into office. It wouldn’t be the first time either.
I am clinging on to this reminder that the country has had some truly terrible leadership before, and yet almost 250 years later we’re still here.
So, I guess as a middle range millennial, I now get to tell all you young queer kids that what you are feeling right now is exactly how it felt in 2004 when we re-elected George Bush, and not only that but many states put in bans against gay/same sex marriage at the time.
This is probably not comforting, but it is true, and it helps me when I feel hopeless: For every revolution there is a counter revolution, for every step forward there is a step back, that things may not be good forever but they will not be bad, either. That we clawed our way to get where we are and we can claw our way forward from here, too. Talk to your queer elders, the ones who have been here before and will be here again and who threw bricks at Stonewall.
When I was a child, if you got AIDS it was a death sentence. Now it isn't. Now you live on.
So I'll quote angels in america: You are fabulous creatures, each and every one. And I bless you: More Life. The Great Work Begins.

HEY GUYS!!
GUYS!!!
FRANCE HAS REACHED THE REQUIRED NUMBER OF SIGNATURES ON THE CITIZEN'S INITIATIVE AGAINST CONVERSION THERAPY IN THE EU!!
ONE COUNTRY DOWN, SIX TO GO!!
We also need still quite a few signatures in order to reach the one million required.
As to date, the six other countries with the most signatures are:
Spain - 38.72%
Finland - 30.31%
Ireland - 24.86%
Netherlands - 24.15%
Germany - 23.54%
Belgium - 23.09%
So yeah, still a long way to go, but we ARE slowly getting closer. Don't stop now! Don't let this stay within the community, either, if you have any friends or family who are open to queer rights, get them to sign, too!

If you are trans I need you to stay alive.
Stay alive for every other trans person fighting, stay alive for every trans person who is no longer here, and most importantly stay alive for yourself.
They don’t get to erase us! They don’t get to take away our rights, and treat us as less than human. Don’t let them erase us, and don’t let them make you a statistic. Don’t let them win.
Stay alive
If you won’t do it for yourself, then do it for others. Do it out of spite.

Isn't this just a way of invalidating complexity of gender too? Like if you say gender binary is fake but also that a person can only be straight, gay, lesbian, or bi, that's still forcing a binary. If someone doesn't identify as male or female then you cannot, by definition, neatly fit into one of those (binary-defined) orientations in a way that would be acceptable. Thinking about it that way gets back into that whole "your sexuality is defined by the longterm partner you end up with so once you pick a person you stop being bi" bullshit. It's probably also one of the reasons they don't like ace people - they want to use your sexuality to determine what your "real" gender is, and they can't do that via your partner if your orientation is "nah I'm good thanks".
Like, I'm genderfluid, and that doesn't mean that I am sometimes straight sometimes gay/lesbian depending on what gender I am currently aligned with. Someone arguing this is basically saying that any variant of nonbinary who dates someone cisgender or transgender has to determine which side of the gender binary they are on - homo or hetero to their partner or potential partners.
And the thing is, you could call yourself nonbinary lesbian or genderfluid bi, and that's perfectly valid - but the people who argue that you HAVE to because they think other sexualities aren't? Are trying to push you to define your gender along the binary by comparing you to your partner - i.e., if you are a lesbian that means you are female. They're really telling on themselves.
People will be like "you can be every gender at once, your gender can be a metaphor, gender binaries are fake, you can do whatever you want forever, and also you have to pick one (1) of the four acceptable sexualities approved of by the council"

so, today we, russian queers, may become "extremists" by decision of russian supreme court and thus our existence will be silenced and erased. any queer activism will be impossible for us. I don't know what to do anymore. I was heartbroken when they passed the laws about "gay propaganda" and transgender people, now I'm just numb. I don't want to escape. I just want to live safely in my own country.
please hear us.

not nearly enough people are fuming about the cass review. do you understand the eventual implications? trans people in the uk will be considered children up until the age of 25, and denied HRT/surgery/even basic measures like legal name change and social transition. all owing to a biased and largely unscientific study. you know what “treatment” for gender dysphoria is recommended by the review instead? conversion therapy.
this will kill people and they know it, because they prefer us dead and out of sight. the government, the NHS and even the opposition have made this clear again and again. a twenty-five year old can have sex, get married have children, join the military, earn a living, be halfway up the corporate ladder or highly successful in their chosen career field by that age, but they can’t transition under NHS rules. this is a death sentence for trans teenagers and they are going ahead with it. it’s trans genocide, same as across the pond.
i’m so afraid for my trans siblings and our futures. i’m so scared for myself. what are we to do if not even the party that is supposed to be on the “left” gives a shit about our safety and mental health as long as they get voted in? labour have become tories with a red coat of paint. it all feels hopeless

Since folks are exhausted from hearing about Project 2025 and Agenda 47, here are some reasons to feel hopeful about Harris
(It would be wonderful if folks could reblog this, a lot of people are feeling very discouraged right now and could use the morale boost!)

For anyone worried about the two images above, they are completely separate things.
AO3 always warned users to take care when sharing personal, identifying information on their site. It's warning the user not to overshare, not a warning that AO3 will share those things.
The box you are checking in "agreement" is more or less that if AO3 is subpoenaed for your email and ip address, they will have to comply.
I get it, I read the fine print just to be sure I wasn't signing my life away... but as someone who uses a private browser, I literally have to check the box every time I visit AO3, and I promise you the warning written in that first image has been on AO3 forever. It's them telling us to look out for ourselves when online.
The incoming US administration is scary as fuck, and I totally support people being extra cautious online. I'm sure if they can find a way to get at people, they will (those assholes), but AO3 is reminding us to play it safe online.
Keep taking care of yourselves, and each other! Together, somehow, we'll find a way through.
Oi read this!
You guys clocked the warning by AO3 to reduce interlinks of accounts?
Especially for queer users in the US right now?
(written below for people who struggle to read text in images).
"Be mindful when sharing personal information, including but not limited your name, email, age, location, personal relationships, gender or sexual identity, racial, or ethnic background religious, or political views and or account usernames on other sites"
Then the normal "By checking this box you consent to the processing of your personal data in the the United States"

This thread is incredibly important to read.
It is also extremely difficult to read. I don't know if I need to point this out, but the document itself is obviously full of bigotry so please take care of yourself if you choose to read it. Antisemitic phrases like "cultural marxism" and "global elites" appear before the document even really gets rolling, and are mixed in with transphobia, racism, and more.
If you want a taste of how this document starts in the first main section about "The Family", here is a taste:
"This starts with deleting the terms sexual orientation and gender identity (“SOGI”), diversity, equity, and inclusion (“DEI”), gender, gender equality, gender equity, gender awareness, gender-sensitive, abortion, reproductive health, reproductive rights, and any other term used to deprive Americans of their First Amendment rights out of every federal rule, agency regulation, contract, grant, regulation, and piece of legislation that exists."
It is all bad. ALL of this document is bad, and dangerous, and threatens the lives and the safety of everyone living in this country.

The local queer centrum asked us all to support the ban on conversion therapy in the EU initiative, so now it's My Job to do it seriously.
We still need so many signatures. Damn. So. Many. Signatures.
Come on people, we can do this!!

Friendly reminder that VP Harris officiated the marriage of a gay couple in 2004, before a generation of voters was even born
She then opposed Proposition 8
This is someone who has consistently fought for the legal rights of the lgbt population, and she's running against a party that actively plans to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges

IT"S TODAYYY!!!!!!
If you believe at all in astrology or psychic abilities, please do not ignore this. Pluto is moving into Aquarius on the 19th of this month, aka the planet associated with innovation, equality, and REVOLUTION, after the shitshow that was the American presidential election. This is the first time in over 200 years this has happened, (the American Revolution started 248 years ago, which is also the last time Pluto was in Aquarius!!!) Aquarius is the sign driving us to consider collective ideals, humanitarian improvement, utopia vs dystopia in our society, I mean, helloooo!!! Pluto's strongest potential is in EMPOWERMENT. I just felt very drawn to look into this and share with ya'll. I know not everyone believes in astrology or witchcraft, but the spiritually tuned in knew when trump was elected, I myself had a dream that he was elected and woke up the next day and he had. Of course this is majorly scary, but many psychics have been feeling and receiving peaceful signs that it will be okay or that now is the time to be bold. This is kind of the biggest astrological deal of our era. For those who practice please do what you can to protect yourselves, spread news of this and manifest all good and positive things for our collective future. Pluto will remain in Aquarius until 2043, almost 20 years, so get ready for some big changes. Love ya'll, stay safe and don't give up <3
