Who knew wanting not to die at the hands of some asshole intruder inside your own home would be a controversial opinion, hum?
People desperately don't want to believe that your sense of empathy can be taken advantage of to condition you into vulnerability towards people who want you harm, but it absolutely can and the average leftist position of "If someone breaks into your house you should just let them do whatever they want to you, even if it means you and your family being murdered r rape" is so abominable that it's baffling how they don't see the problem with it.

Watching The Punisher because I heard it was good and need to fill the time before the next Daredevil episode... I don't know what I was expecting but I was a little taken aback that they made a pro-gun control senator look like a bumbling idiot.
Like I know the MCU has a contract with the US Military to loan out equipment for their franchises in exchange for a favorable portrayal.
I also know that it would make much more sense for citizens to have guns in the Marvel universe where there are like 10+ super powered individuals operating out of NYC at any given time and yet somehow there is more (violent) crime there on a daily basis in NYC than there has ever been IRL, almost as if they by their very nature invite opposition to challenge them (as it was argued in Civil War) and/or they inspire copycats.
Karen Page, of all people, deserves to have a gun because of all of the targets she has placed on her own back either because she's sticking her nose where it doesn't belong (affectionate) or because of the company she keeps (close friendships with BOTH Matt and Frank). If you want to piss off half the vigilantes in Manhattan, she's the one to aim for. So like, in this fictional scenario, she is well within her right to carry a handgun.
Having said all that, all of the language surrounding guns and glorifying the military makes it very easy for me to understand why conservatives have co-opted the Punisher's symbol. He takes pride in having been a Marine despite having committed war crimes during classified missions. He views himself as an executioner and feels like bombs are cowardly because they hurt innocent people and don't require the same willpower to shoot someone dead on. Not to mention how he's the perfect traditional "family man" and makes a point to protect women and children.
Needless to say this is all very idealistic and as Matt argues he has no right to determine who deserves to die based on his own subjective and often hypocritical terms. His argument is that he only kills bad people and even if every person he targets truly is as evil as he believes, only in a superhero world would he somehow never kill or hurt anyone innocent in the crossfire.
I'm having a hard time finding the words to distinguish his justice from that of corrupt cops or other "bad guys with guns" other than the fact that he is not state sanctioned and miraculously never targets anyone who "doesn't deserve it". I think season 2 of Daredevil did a MUCH better job of portraying the grey morality of his actions and painting him as an anti-hero with severe mental health struggles.
Maybe it's because he's the protagonist in his own show, but there's much less of a seed of doubt as to whether he's in the right. I am only 9.5 out of 13 episodes into season 1 so this may change, but the second they introduced the gun control senator I'm consuming the show a little more critically.
If anyone has finished the series or especially if you'd read the comics, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

Since folks are exhausted from hearing about Project 2025 and Agenda 47, here are some reasons to feel hopeful about Harris
(It would be wonderful if folks could reblog this, a lot of people are feeling very discouraged right now and could use the morale boost!)

The governor of Pennsylvania (the state the Adjuster was found in), Josh Shapiro (who was on the shortlist to be Kamala's VP pick lol) just said at a press conference: “In America, we do not kill people in cold blood to resolve policy differences or express a viewpoint."
What, Josh, exactly, are we supposed to do?
Vote? Thanks to gerrymandering, the electoral college, politicians being funded by corporations, and "news" organizations peddling propaganda, that does shit all.
Protest? We try doing that and we are just ignored. The right makes jokes about running over protestors (because apparently only the lives of rich white people matter).
Call our politicians? They don't fucking care. We've been trying that for decades and they barely passed Obamacare, which Trump now wants to dismantle.
MLK said "a riot is the language of the unheard." We have been screaming at the tops of our lungs that these "policy differences" are killing us. Costly private medical insurance is killing us. Lack of gun control is killing us. Rising food and fuel prices are killing us. Microplastics everywhere is killing us. Fossil fuels are killing us.
And people like you, Governor Josh Shapiro, do nothing except protect your rich friends.
I'm surprised it's taken this long, and I'm surprised there haven't been copycats yet. Let me know when I should grab my torch and pitchfork, because my student and medical debt ridden ass is very ready for some good old-fashioned revolution.

Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week #24
June 21-28 2024
The US Surgeon General declared for the first time ever, firearm violence a public health crisis. The nation's top doctor recommended the banning of assault weapons and large-capacity magazines, the introduce universal background checks for purchasing guns, regulate the industry, pass laws that would restrict their use in public spaces and penalize people who fail to safely store their weapons. President Trump dismissed Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy in 2017 in part for his criticism of guns before his time in government, he was renominated for his post by President Biden in 2021. While the Surgeon General's reconstructions aren't binding a similar report on the risks of smoking in 1964 was the start of a national shift toward regulation of tobacco.
Vice-President Harris announced the first grants to be awarded through a ground breaking program to remove barriers to building more housing. Under President Biden more housing units are under construction than at any time in the last 50 years. Vice President Harris was announcing 85 million dollars in grants giving to communities in 21 states through the Pathways to Removing Obstacles to Housing (PRO) program. The administration plans another 100 million in PRO grants at the end of the summer and has requested 100 million more for next year. The Treasury also announced it'll moved 100 million of left over Covid funds toward housing. All of this is part of plans to build 2 million affordable housing units and invest $258 billion in housing overall.
President Biden pardoned all former US service members convicted under the US Military's ban on gay sex. The pardon is believed to cover 2,000 veterans convicted of "consensual sodomy". Consensual sodomy was banned and a felony offense under the Uniform Code of Justice from 1951 till 2013. The Pardon will wipe clean those felony records and allow veterans to apply to change their discharge status.
The Department of Transportation announced $1.8 Billion in new infrastructure building across all 50 states, 4 territories and Washington DC. The program focuses on smaller, often community-oriented projects that span jurisdictions. This award saw a number of projects focused on climate and energy, like $25 million to help repair damage caused by permafrost melting amid higher temperatures in Alaska, or $23 million to help electrify the Downeast bus fleet in Maine.
The Department of Energy announced $2.7 billion to support domestic sources of nuclear fuel. The Biden administration hopes to build up America's domestic nuclear fuel to allow for greater stability and lower costs. Currently Russia is the world's top exporter of enriched uranium, supplying 24% of US nuclear fuel.
The Department of Interior awarded $127 million to 6 states to help clean up legacy pollution from orphaned oil and gas wells. The funding will help cap 600 wells in Alaska, Arizona, Indiana, New York and Ohio. So far thanks to administration efforts over 7,000 orphaned wells across the country have been capped, reduced approximately 11,530 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions
HUD announced $469 million to help remove dangerous lead from older homes. This program will focus on helping homeowners particularly low income ones remove lead paint and replace lead pipes in homes built before 1978. This represents one of the largest investments by the federal government to help private homeowners deal with a health and safety hazard.
Bonus: President Biden's efforts to forgive more student debt through his administration's SAVE plan hit a snag this week when federal courts in Kansas and Missouri blocked elements the Administration also suffered a set back at the Supreme Court as its efforts to regular smog causing pollution was rejected by the conservative majority in a 5-4 ruling that saw Amy Coney Barrett join the 3 liberals against the conservatives. This week's legal setbacks underline the importance of courts and the ability to nominate judges and Justices over the next 4 years.
