hi. why is nobody talking about the porn ban in north carolina? the PAVE act is a bill that was passed back in september 2023 (came into law january 1st 2024) that effectively bans users from viewing websites hosting adult content without age verification. (link to the bill)

"-the act legally requires commercial ventures to verify users’ ages if a company “knowingly and intentionally publishes or distributes material harmful to minors on the internet from a website that contains a substantial portion of such material.”

In order to do so, North Carolina requires these sites to either use “a commercially available database that is regularly used by businesses or governmental entities for the purpose of age and identity verification,” or utilize “another commercially reasonable method of age and identity verification.” Companies are not allowed to hold records on any personally identifying information used to confirm users’ ages.

Additionally, North Carolina offers residents the right to a lawsuit if a site is found to record user identifying information, or if a minor’s parent or guardian finds that a website allowed their child to access a site purposefully hosting material “harmful to minors.”" obviously we don't want these websites having our IDs, but sites like e621 and pornhub just straight up aren't asking for them either- blocking their service to the state in it's entirety instead. even beyond the restriction of adult websites, obviously as the 'queerest place on the net' we can see how "material that is harmful to minors" is not just intentional vague wording, but a massive red flag. even if you dont care about the porn- which you should, this is a massive rights violation. how long until 'harmful material' is expanded to include transgender people? same-sex relationships? anything lgbtq? this is a serious fucking problem and it opens the door to hundreds of potentially worse bills that extrapolate on the same concept.

i have no idea what to do to fight it, but if someone smarter than me could add links to representatives or something, that would be awesome.

Protesting & Preparation

Preparation for a protest is extremely important and will ultimately dictate how you're able to respond to an unexpected or emergency situation. Here's what you need to be aware of: 1. Research the protest you are attending;

Understand the local protesting laws and anything that might be applicable; some good things to know include laws against face coverings, protesting laws/bylaws, permits, and designated protesting areas. Know your rights, and the potential consequences of 'civil disobedience'.

Understand the cause and be familiar with what you're protesting. Make sure you know who the organizers are, their intentions, and also whether or not this group prioritizes nonviolence and peaceful protesting. These are all things you need to take into considerations before attending a protest.

Be familiar with the area the protest is held in, and know where your exits are. A fast and well-planned exit is important in the event that a protest becomes unsafe, whatever the reason may be.

Check what posted bail is in the area in case of an arrest.

2. Planning attendance

Never attend a protest alone; protests are not inherently safe even if they are filled with likeminded people. A friend or family member can document any potential violations of your rights, and alert others of such. Have a designated meeting place in case you get separated and prioritize staying together.

In the event that you have to leave a protest abruptly, make sure you are leaving quickly with a group of people. Being alone makes you an easy target for arrests or right-wing reactionary violence.

Make sure a trust friend or family member knows where you are, and when they should expect to hear from you again.

Have your emergency contact information handy; write this on your skin.

Similarly, the number for the National Lawyers Guild is good to have in case of an unlawful arrest. Again, I suggest you write this on your skin. Writing important numbers on your flesh prevents authorities from taking it from you.

If your protests have a legal assistance team organized, make sure their number is written on your skin.

3. Your Bag / Contents

Your bag should have the following contents:

A water bottle with a secure lid; being able to pour water out of your water bottle is important because you can use it to wash your skin or your eyes.

Cash for transportation and food, or cash bail in the event that you are arrested.

If you have or need an inhaler or EpiPen, be sure to bring that with you. If you need medication, bring that with you along with your prescription; if you are not prescribed the medication you are on, do not bring it. Cops will use anything they can find against you, and that could lead to a possession charge. Wear your medical alert bracelet beneath your clothing if you have one.

Water and snacks; granola bars, trail mix, nuts, etc.

A camera/video camera; you should be prepared to document at the protest you are attending. A camera can be an effective way to deescalate a situation with the police and it allows for photographic evidence that can be imperative in legal proceedings and media coverage.

*On the topic of cell phones: Some sources and experienced protestors will tell you not to bring your cellphone. This is because it can be used to track you to the protest. However, your cellphone is a reliable means of communication with emergency services and your emergency contacts.

I will not tell you whether or not you should or shouldn't bring your cellphone to a protest, however, I strongly suggest that if you are new to protesting or you are a minor, you bring your cellphone. There are many different ways to reliably keep your phone on you without sacrificing any integrity. These two posts are really helpful in that regard, give them a read if you decide to bring your phone to a protest.

If you're in a position to, bring a burner phone in exchange for your personal cellphone. Do not take pictures on your burner phone, if you intend to take a burner phone, bring a camera as well. The burner phone is strictly for communication.

*On the topic of first aid: This is an incredibly important topic; you should 100% be bringing a first aid kit to the protest you are attending. I will be posting a video that breaks down what you should be including in your first aid kits. Even if you do not know first aid, somebody will; this can be the difference between saving a life and somebody passing away.

To Those Who Still Hold Onto a Shred of Morality and Humanity - Stand with Us and Don’t Forget Us.

Over 40,000 lives have been lost, with 70% of them being children and women. Among these numbers are my own family members—many of whom I’ve already lost.

My family, my cousin, aunt, their children, and grandchildren were all directly targeted by Israeli airstrikes. I’m sharing a video of my aunt and cousin to reveal the harsh reality we are facing in Gaza. In this video, my aunt bravely shares her story about how the Israeli army airstruck them along with their children and grandchildren. Even if you don’t understand Arabic, just watching her speak will help you grasp the immense suffering we are enduring in Gaza. You can see the vedeo in this post.

The few family members who remain are in grave danger, and I’m terrified of losing them too. We have a chance to make a real difference and give my 24 surviving family members a chance to live.

In Gaza, jobs are non-existent, and nonprofit organizations like the UN have drastically reduced their work on the ground. Basic necessities such as milk, food, and medicine are almost as expensive as gold. My family is struggling to afford even the essentials, and my mother urgently needs medication that we simply cannot afford.

I’m also sharing another video that shows the daily struggle people face just to get clean water. The suffering here extends far beyond my family; it’s a genocide affecting every aspect of life in Gaza.

Thanks to the generosity of those who have already donated, we’ve raised $535 toward our goal of $190,363- august 17th. I’m deeply grateful to each of you, but we still have a long way to go, and I need your help more than ever. Imagine if it were your family—how would you feel if they were in this situation?

With the current climate. I think more people need to read the book 1984.

It’s an amazingly relevant dystopian novel about three superstates constantly at war. One of the key plot points of the world building is the fact that the superstates are only keeping up the war to keep their economies productive without adding to the wealth of their citizens, who live in a state of fear and poverty and are only guided by the rules the government put in place for them.

The main character, Winston, has a job where he’s literally rewriting history so that all information aligns with the Party’s ideologies. As the book goes on, Winston starts thinking that due to his job and others with similar careers, the government has been lying to the people because they know that if the “proles” (the name given to the ‘uneducated 85%’ of the population) knew that they had the power to fight and think for themselves, they could revolt and overthrow the government. It’s easier to control them by convincing them that freedom is an illusion that only leads to strife.

To keep up that illusion, the Party keeps its citizens under constant surveillance, monitors their thoughts, and getting rid of people who seem discontent or won’t conform.

Tr*mp has already announced that he’ll keep TikTok for the people of US investors own 50% of it. This is just the beginning. He’s literally trying to control the media. Just like how Twitter is now a right wing cesspool that shadow bans and restricts people’s ideologies, TikTok being owned by American investors is evolving in much of the same way. Trump and Congress will be able to control what we share and what information we take in.

With every post I see of people rightfully calling the TikTok ban the political stunt most of us know it was, I see three more post talking about how they’re just glad the app is back and unironically thanking the president. And that’s the problem. People aren’t thinking of the large scale ramifications this has. The ban was just a show of power. It was a ploy to show that all of the freedoms we enjoy can be taken away.

And you fell for it.

You voted for him. You praised him for bringing TikTok back. And you fell for it.

Read 1984. You won’t regret it.
