James is the happy-go-lucky person in school. He’s the loud, energetic, backbone of the Gryffindor tower. Everyone loves him, everyone sees how smiley he is, everyone knows that James Potter is perfect. It’s one of the things that Regulus hates about him, he’s too happy, too loveable, too good at taking away his brother. 

So he’s taken aback when he comes up to the Astronomy Tower only to find James sitting on the edge of the tower, staring up at the sky, with his knees tucked up into his chest. He’s silent, but his shoulders are heaving as though he’s sobbing.

Regulus is about to turn around and walk out of the tower, but as he’s leaving, James whips around and his eyes catch Regulus’. There are tears streaming down his face, his eyes are red, and his face is puffy. And Regulus feels like he shouldn’t be seeing this.

He shouldn’t be seeing the sun break down. That’s not something that Regulus deserves. He treats James like shit. Sirius or Remus or Pete should be seeing this, not him. 

“James?” Regulus asks, taking a small step towards where James is sitting, not sure how to deal with this, “Are you okay?”

James clears his throat and sniffs, wiping at his eyes, “Yeah, I’m… fine.” 

“You’re not.”

“What do you know?”

“I know what it looks like when people cry.” Regulus hums, making his way towards James and sitting a bit away from him, “And I know that you’re not fine. I can also assume that you’re the type of person to hide all of your problems from your friends.”

James hums, “Why does it concern you.”

“I’m not your friend.” Regulus hums, lifting his chin a bit and searching for his star, “Tell me.”

“How do I know you’re not going to use it against me?” James asks, voice weak, “How do I know you’re not going to run to Sirius and tell him that I’m fucked in the head, that I’m pathetic? You love him, you hate me.” And Regulus doesn’t know what to say to that.

So he doesn’t respond for a couple seconds before he mutters, “I don’t hate you and I’m not the type of person to parade around the issues of others.”

James laughs weakly, though Regulus isn’t sure whether it’s at himself or at Regulus, “It’s nothing. I’m just being stupid and weak, bad at being a fucking normal human being.” 

“What do you mean?”

“I’m not-” James shakes his head, “I’m not… I’m not a fucking man.”

“What do you mean?” Regulus asks, “Like, you’re a girl?” Maybe if James is trans, then Regulus will know how to help him. At least, he might. 

“No, I’m not that either.” James once again shakes his head, “That’s the fucking problem. I don’t like when people call me a guy, I hate when people call me a girl. I don’t like it.”

“You like… androgyny.” Regulus hums, “You’re not a guy, you’re not a girl.”

“I’m just…” James sniffs, “I’m just James. And I hate when people call me a man but everyone does it. I can’t- I don’t…” They take a deep breath, “I…”

“Have you told your friends this?”

“How the fuck do I do that?” James shakes their head, “They’ll think I’m fucking mental.”

“I don’t think you’re mental.” Regulus shakes his head, “And I sincerely doubt that they’ll think that. You guys are loyal to each other, to a fault. If that gets you breaking down like this, you need to tell them.”

“But I’m…”

“You’re not.” Regulus says, shaking his head and not caring just what James was going to say about themself, “Let me tell you something. I’m- I’m not a normal guy.”

James perks up, their shoulders lifting a bit, “What?”

“I was born a girl. It’s called trans. I don’t know if that’s what you are, but it’s… normal? For people like us to feel like we’re the wrong gender and if you feel like you don’t have any specific gender, I can’t say that makes you weird.” 

“Does Sirius know?”

Regulus huffs a laugh, “Sirius was the one that cut my hair and taught me the spell to hide my chest. He taught me a spell to make my hair look longer when we go home. I sincerely doubt he’d mind if you told your friends, or at least him, how you feel. You should just tell them.”

“Will you be there with me when I do?”

Regulus sighs, reluctantly wrapping his arm around their waist, “If you want me to be.”

hi guys, this is the third time i'm rewriting this fic and this is the final intro, ignore the mistakes because i'm gonna edit later, thank you for being patient! @godsofwoes @star4daisy @ecstarry @bellaxisworld

James was sixteen when he was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Ever since then, everything made so much sense.

He believed he had other disorders as well, but his psychiatrist refused to share that knowledge with him along the lines of “I don't want you to be obsessed over another thing, just trust the process.”

And he did, he dropped the subject and he promised himself to not self-diagnose himself. It worked perfectly, he was on meds on and off, sometimes it was longer and the other times it was a shorter period of time.

The first year was horrible. He couldn't get along with the meds he was taking and somewhere in the way he stopped taking them. He got worse, he had panic attacks and he couldn't help but overanalyse everything. After three months of suffering, his parents put him back on track, with different meds this time.

They weren't as bad as the meds he used first, so that was progress. He didn't feel sleepy all the time, he was actually more energetic. But he had days where he felt as if a truck ran him over and that lead to him rotting in bed, and suffering from depression. He needed his battery to be charged as he did nothing in bed. He spent his time sleeping mostly and if he wasn't sleeping he was daydreaming until he slept.

Depression and OCD went hand in hand, he didn't have any chance but to take the meds. It took some time, but they found the right medication for James by trial and error. But his parents didn't give up, they were always right beside him, doing everything they could to help him.

James sometimes hated how caring his parents were. It was like back to the first days of his coming out and them doing everything he wanted and respecting his wishes. They meant no harm, they were the best parents he could possibly have and he was a lucky child. He knew this. But he considered himself ungrateful from time to time, very often actually.

Because he was lucky, he felt like getting away with everything he wanted, doing everything he could and that felt wrong. Because he never had to fight for what he wanted, he never had the opportunity to show his power to get the thing he wanted despite everyone.

But no, that wasn't James’ life. James had the brightest star with him and that damned luck.

He was never going to be like the other people, even if he wanted to. He was never going to be fighting tooth and nail to get the thing that he wanted for so long. His accomplishments were always going to taste bitter. It was never a victory, it was earned right.

But soon, it was all going to change.

Because he found him, he found his prince. And there was no going back.

Somerton's misogyny and lesbophobia was fucking blatant and the fact his fans didn't care / notice until a man made a video on it is abhorrent. That IS a problem, people NEED to do better or else bigotry towards women will only continue to be accepted! Lesbians were calling this loser out for years and no one cared!

hey. as a lesbian who watched somerton's videos you have to understand that it wasn't "fucking blatant" and it was embedded between smart (stolen) points in the structure of the argument, and was given fake "evidence" to prove it --- something hbomberguy specifically shows with every example. i personally always noticed that it was weird and it was always a critical point when watching his videos (and also uh, side note but you shouldn't primarily go to cis white men for good takes about feminism and the lesbian experience anyways --- like, you should be watching a diverse intake of thought from underrepresented creators and understand that the cis/white/male perspective will always be limited because it's not universal)

to many, though, it for sure didn't register as a pattern of behavior until the instances were laid out. saying that audiences were "abhorrent" for "excusing" it just shows a complete lack of sympathy, because again: the pattern of behavior was the problem, and rhetorically each individual instance was relegated to enough plausible deniability where it slipped by most audiences who were probably watching the video in the background while they folded laundry or something. when bigotry is shrouded under the guise of fact, it takes on the affect of truth and abuses the viewer's trust in the creator. sure, media literacy is a huge problem, and i've written and researched so much into that, and yeah yeah audiences should "do better." the reality is though, putting the blame on the audience feels a little misogynistic in itself, bc you're just shifting the blame from the literal people who need to be blamed for practicing bigotry --- cis white men with a large platform.

the real thing u should be saying here is to call for a diversification of one's media intake, but no -- let's blame the audience for getting lied to, instead of uplifting female, queer, trans, poc, etc voices. the only way people "need" to do better, imo, is listening to those people instead and seeking multiple perspectives.

like y'all, let's retire this very new narrative that all james somerton fans were evil misogynists who willingly supported this and need to be destroyed. really most people who watched his content were younger queer people genuinely interested in queer media analysis, film theory, and queer history, probably excited that a long video essay was dedicated to their favorite show/movie/etc, and lets not pretend this wasn't disappointing for them as well. can everyone like chill out.
