I'm wishing a very Happy Pride Month to all the queer people who:
are disabled
are chronically ill
can't celebrate for health reasons
disability gets in the way of their gender representation
disability got in the way of a relationship
don't have anyone to celebrate with
have homophobic caretakers
Happy Pride Month to all disabled queer people

i don’t want to add to the discourse but as much as people wanna argue on here about ace Vik and all that shit it’s honestly been really nice seeing so much fanfic and smut that actually acknowledges disabled conditions and makes accommodations for them like usually disabled characters are cast aside or their disabilities are cast aside and smut is written with them completely fine or they’re just considered unfuckable and that they aren’t dating anyone or they’re labeled as ace (which is a big reason why i don’t like that headcanon for Vik personally i think the claim for the creator comes from an inherent place of homophobia and prejudice) so it’s been really cool to see so much representation and no one ignoring especially Vik’s disabilities but Jayce’s leg as well like yeah put your little gay ship in braces together and then they kiss and fuck nasty !!
#and ofc this is not to generalize and say it’s all perfect rep or that any vik ace hc is bad these are just my thoughts#i think the fandom is doing fairly well with this one good job team#also i am not ace but i am disabled so do with that what you will#faintly from a rooftop you hear me screaming: more disability rep in sex#arcane#jayvik#arcane jayce#viktor arcane#arcane viktor#not really#arcane spoilers#but i’m gonna tag it cause i mention jayce’s leg

When you encounter a person who does not do something that you consider normative, you need to understand that they could be either stating a barrier or expressing a boundary. A barrier is "I would like to partake of the normative activity, but I can't due to other factors." A boundary is "I have made a decision not to participate in the normative activity."
Many people do not believe that boundaries actually exist! This is why it's so common to give a clear "No" on an issue and get inundated with people saying "But have you tried-" They can't conceptualize that anyone might actually want to avoid X thing, so they assume that you totally want to do X and you would love X so much if only they could figure out a way around whatever pesky obstacle is getting in your way. But humanity contains multitudes, and for any given experience you consider vital for happiness I promise there are people who are Just Not Interested.
If someone is stating a boundary, do NOT talk about how sad their life must be, and do NOT try to push them! Just accept that their life experience is very different from your own, and isn't that a beautiful thing?
Barriers are different. Barriers suck. With boundaries, the only problem is other people being dicks. With barriers, the problem is the barrier itself . . . and probably, additionally, people being dicks. There's really not a way to win in the people being dicks department when you don't do something that other people have decided is Necessary For Humaning.
If someone is talking about a barrier they face, still don't talk about how sad their life must be, although it's fine to commiserate with a friend if they're complaining. It's hard! Some barriers are pretty insurmountable; the person might not ever get to do X even though they want to. And a lot of people don't believe that this kind of barrier exists either; we're very much taught that you can do anything if you try hard enough, when that is simply not true. If someone tells you that they can't do something, listen to them and respect that.
The only reason for not doing X that people really acknowledge as real are the surmountable barriers. And these are real, but even in these cases you should always assume that the person knows themself best and not give advice unless they've specifically asked for it. But if they have asked, it's chill to try to brainstorm solutions with them.
As someone who has both things going on, it really sucks that people tend to assume that everything is a) a barrier issue and b) that they personally have the solution to it. Don't do this.
The only way you can tell if something is a boundary or a barrier is to listen to people and believe them.
Example:
If you offer someone a drink and they say, "No thanks . . . I haven't really found anything that I like yet," (barrier, potentially surmountable) it is probably cool to ask them if they're open to trying something new, and if they say yes ask about their tastes to try to find a drink they would enjoy! They might like it or they might not.
If you offer someone a drink and they say, "I can't, it interacts with my meds," (barrier, insurmountable) you can say, "Aw, that sucks!" and offer them something nonalcoholic.
If you offer someone a drink and they say, "I don't drink," (BOUNDARY) you should give them a mocktail and shut the fuck up.
#this post is about being ace and also being a teetolaler and also being disabled and also--#there are some things i don't want to do and i am sick of people assuming that really i *must* want to#becuase no one could *really* be uninterested in drinking or sex or whatever#and there are also some things that i desperately want to do that i can't because of the curse#but a random stranger doesn't know which is which unless i tell them#you've got to listen to people when they tell you what they want or don't want to do#and you've got to listen to people when they tell you what they can and can't do

Since it is Disability Pride Month, let's talk about disabled aspecs. Aspecs who would prefer a solitary lifestyle but require caretakers. Aspecs who cannot live alone on what their benefits provide. Aspecs who, due to the ableism of society, are constantly prevented from living a single life. Aspecs who struggle with sexuality, sexual positions or libido due to disability. Aspecs who are tired with their labels being attributed to their disabilities. Aspecs who DO identify as aspec because they're disabled. Aspecs with screen readers locked out of community resources, aspecs who can't get into buildings for meetups because of inaccessible architecture. Aspecs who can't meet other aspecs in real life because of their conditions. Any aspec that can't fit the able-bodied mold and feels unseen and unsupported.
I wish you a safe and peaceful Disability Pride Month, whether you can find pride in your condition or not. Your aspec perspective and identity is valued, needed, and respected here, and I hope soon it will be respected everywhere.

There are some headcanons that I cannot rely on a fandom to support me or even care about with. Those ones are usually the aro and ace ones and mental disabilities that aren't well-known as the ones most spoken of.
So, to remedy this situation, I make everyone in my fics on the aro and/or ace spectrum(s) and (usually) give them a disability. Yk, as a treat. Because I know someone out there wants to see themselves in a character or sees themselves in a character and has nobody to make content about it. Yk?
#aro#ace#aroace#arospec#acespec#fandom#allusions to fanfic I'm writing#mental disabilities#idk what to tag that because there's not a specific one I'm thinking of#neurodivergence#mirr speaks

TOMORROW!
October 23rd, 2024 is the 4th annual Disabled Ace Day!
Disabled Ace Day, which takes place on Wednesday during Ace Week, is dedicated to awareness, visibility, and celebration of the intersections of Asexuality and Disability and advocates for material and social support of Disabled Aces everywhere.
With a vitally important election coming up in the US, we will be talking politics tomorrow on the The Ace Couple podcast by discussing the laws that create marriage inequality in our country for Disabled people, for Asexual & Aromantic people, and for Black Americans.
Obergefell v. Hodges may have allowed for same-sex marriage at the federal level, but it does NOT mean that we have true marriage equality in this country.
We encourage Disabled Aces from around the globe to talk about your own experience, be it personal or political, to raise awareness this Ace Week.

🏳️🌈 New additions to our shop! Severely disabled trans person stabilizing after recent bout of homelessness♿
hello, my name is equinox, i was recently homeless for 6 months. i am an intersex genderfluid trans butch lesbian. i am multiply disabled, i am autistic, schizophrenic, and bipolar, and have hypermobile eds, arthritis, fibromyalgia, degenerative disc disease, chronic fatigue and other physical health issues. i am struggling to make ends meet right now after paying a deposit and first month's rent after living in a hotel for 2 months where i was paying at minimum $1,200 - 1,400/month to live there.
my food stamps are on hold right now because the government is "receiving 400 - 500 applications per day" and it is somehow my fault for not thinking to come in in perosn to talk to them depsite the fact that they told me i am approved online. i have been starving for months. i need to eat in order to work to pay my bills. thank you for considering helping me, it goes very far
