Smearing BRICS As ‘Anti-US Camp’ Won’t Dent Its Increasing Appeal Around World
— Wang Yi | July 18, 2023
Tumblr media
Illustration: Chen Xia/Global Times
At a time when the BRICS mechanism is becoming increasingly attractive, an article by VOA's Chinese site titled "Expansion and de-dollarization, will the BRICS turn into an anti-US camp?" claimed on Tuesday that "China hopes that the expansion of the BRICS should have the consideration of competing with the US," smearing the mechanism with sinister intensions.
By inciting confrontation with a zero-sum mentality, this VOA article attempts to portray the BRICS, an inclusive multilateral cooperation platform that promotes mutual benefit and win-win results, as an exclusive organization. It is also trying to drive a wedge among the countries of the BRICS cooperation mechanism. However, such smears that go against the facts cannot interfere with cooperation among the BRICS countries or undercut the attractiveness of the mechanism.
This round of smearing of the BRICS cooperation mechanism by the Western media has been going on for some time. For example, after the BRICS foreign ministers met in South Africa on June 1 and 2, the US Newsweek website published articles such as "BRICS is evolving from China-Russia dream to potential US nightmare" and "China's and Russia's growing BRICS bloc speeds decline of US influence."
Unlike the earlier despising and bad-mouthing of the BRICS, the US and Western media now show more worries and fears about the rapid expansion of the cooperation mechanism. This change fully reflects the indisputable fact that the BRICS mechanism has gained momentum.
Indeed, as a global governance platform built by large developing economies, it has continuously deepened practical cooperation and increasingly become a model of promoting South-South cooperation. The new vision of global governance advocated by the BRICS mechanism has increasing appeal. 19 new countries have formally or informally approached BRICS to express the interest in becoming members as it prepares to hold its annual summit in South Africa in August, according to media reports.
The economic influence of the BRICS countries is also becoming increasingly attractive to economies around the world amid risks. In 2022, BRICS countries accounted for more than 25.6 percent of global GDP, and the group is expected to contribute more than 50 percent by 2030. The huge market potential, abundant resources and regional cooperation have made the BRICS cooperation mechanism a strong magnet for global investors.
The reason why the cooperation mechanism attracts more and more countries is because this platform meets the needs of countries seeking stable economic development and cooperation against anti-globalization and protectionism and the risk spillovers from the economic policies of developed countries such as the US.
For instance, as for the BRICS' promotion of "de-dollarization" claimed by the American and Western media, all that the BRICS countries are doing is taking legitimate steps to protect their economies from common external shocks caused by the US dollar's hegemony.
In recent years, the US has abused the hegemony of the dollar, exacerbating the risks of the world economy. In this regard, many countries, even US allies, have responded to these risks by reducing their holdings of US debt, promoting bilateral currency agreements and diversifying their foreign exchange reserves.
Now, while economies across the world are hedging the risk of dollar hegemony, the BRICS cooperation mechanism effectively helps member countries deal with the risks brought about by the hegemony of the dollar and the irresponsible monetary policy of the US.
As the BRICS cooperation mechanism is further strengthened, slandering by Western media is expected to intensify. There may be more US and Western media and experts who accuse the BRICS of "wooing Southern countries against the US and the US dollar." Or they will resume rumor-mongering and division tactics to undercut the momentum of the expansion of BRICS.
However, the expansion of the BRICS has become an irresistible trend, which is not only conducive to the sustainable development of the BRICS mechanism but also in line with the interests of developing countries. Faced with the exclusive cliques formed by the US and the West to engage in camp confrontation, developing countries will voluntarily join the open, inclusive, cooperative and win-win BRICS mechanism. The noise made by the US and the West cannot reverse this trend.

This is a message for all of my USAmerican mutuals and followers, as well as those I follow (and all of their mutuals and followers, and so on a so on) -- I know things seem hopeless now, I know you're scared, I know you think the extremists have won. I'm sitting here sobbing and shaking myself.
But NOTHING IS DECIDED YET -- you still have the opportunity to pull your country back from the abyss. YOU HAVE A DUTY TO DO SO.
Luckily, you can still vote in the November election -- you still have that right.
BUT YOU NEED TO REMEMBER THAT THE US HAS A TWO-PARTY SYSTEM!!!
Voting for ANYONE else besides the two main presidential candidates WILL result in your vote going to waste!
JOE BIDEN is the lesser of the two evils, if you stand for progress.
VOTE FOR HIM, OR TRUMP GETS IN.
There's no other choice.
And make no mistake -- Trump will absolutely use your nuclear arsenal to destroy the planet, just because. Just like a comic-book supervillain.
So please, please, please vote. I'm begging you. The world is begging you.
Otherwise we really are on the Eve of Destruction.
And in the meantime (and if worst comes to worst), DO WHATEVER YOU HAVE TO TO KEEP YOURSELF AND YOUR LOVED ONES SAFE. After all, fascist regimes haven't lasted all that long -- Nazi Germany, Mussolini's Italy, Franco's Spain, Peron's Argentina, Pinochet's Chile ... ALL of them were toppled, either by the people themselves, or by the rest of the world. It may take a few decades, but so long as the orange man keeps his finger off the button, it'll happen eventually.
Remember that.
A CHANGE IS GONNA COME.
A CHANGE IS GONNA COME.
A CHANGE IS GONNA COME.

“It could never happen in our country”. It is. As many stand behind this vulgar and violent fascist movement happening in America, embracing the division, promoting the hatred, cheering on the would be dictator, it’s difficult not to be in awe of the spectacle. To see our fellow Americans, so willing to relinquish their rights and freedoms due to a manufactured fear that has gripped their soul. A fear created by Trump and his sycophantic minions, warning of dangers that do not exist, scapegoating the vulnerable and defenseless as the “vermin” who are responsible for all the hardship one endures. It is difficult not to be disheartened by it. As a title wave of lies and deception, misinformation and falsities bombard is from all directions, cover ups and excuses, justification of the unjustifiable, normalizing what is absurd. It’s difficult to not be discouraged. As we watch this fascist coalition threaten the very principles upon which this country anchor to, we see calls for the termination of news networks for not bending to the will of the autocratic leader by fact checking him, as we hear calls for imprisonment of legislators who’s crime is calling out the anti-democratic behavior and rhetoric, the calls for military intervention against us, the citizens of this nation, calls for executions of those who would dare stand for democracy, those who stand with our Constitution, those who stand for freedom. It’s difficult to not feel powerless.
Let me tell you my pro-democracy friends. These anxious feelings, although normal, are unwarranted. For we are the people. We are the vast majority of this nation. It goes beyond our sheer numbers. This vast and beautiful collection of diverse peoples that we are, we are the soul of the nation. Our love is stronger than their hate. Our bravery dwarfs their fear mongering. Our positivity counteracts their negativity. Our desire for freedom outmatches their want of oppression. Together we will arise victorious from this darkness that has blanketed our land. We will over these forces of old and evil as we did in 1865, as we did in 1945, as we did in 1964, and when this perilous struggle is over, it not only cauterizes the wounds inflicted by those who have assaulted the character of our nation, it will once again tamp down the notion that racism is acceptable in any way, sending the bigots back to their shadows, it will send the message that hate has no home in the United States of America, that the only superiority is that which is written in our founding documents. That all are created equal, that we are endowed with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Do not fret friends. Organize. Do not worry. Organize. Do not give in. Speak out. I truly believe that good is stronger than bad, that light is more powerful than darkness, that peace overcomes violence, that unity triumphs over division, that love supersedes hate. ☮️💟🇺🇸

Yale University students celebrate graduation in 1914—despite what the date scribbled on the image says. In the early 20th century, U.S. elite colleges were panicked about an influx of Jewish applicants. They devised a system to screen them out that remains mainly in place today. Photograph By George Grantham Bain Collection, Library of Congress
Why Do Colleges Have Legacy Admissions? It Started as a Way to Keep Out Jews.
Standardized tests. Interviews. Extracurricular Activities. In the early 20th Century, Universities used these Tactics to Ensure their Students were Predominantly Protestant.
— By Erin Blakemore | July 28, 2023
Should college students gain admission based on academic merit—or who their parents are? That question has become more pertinent than ever with the U.S. Supreme Court’s invalidation of affirmative action and the Department of Education’s announcement of a civil rights investigation into Harvard University’s preferential treatment of “legacy” students with family connections.
Although it may seem like a modern problem, it’s only been about a century since U.S. colleges and universities began factoring family relationships and other criteria like extracurricular activities, interviews, and standardized test scores into their admissions decisions. These policies, it turns out, are rooted in anti-Semitic attitudes that aimed to keep Jewish students out of elite schools.
Here’s how anti-Jewish discrimination fueled modern college admissions—long before affirmative action ever existed.
Training Grounds For Society’s Elite
Before the late 19th century, a college education was largely out of reach for anyone but wealthy Protestants, who founded universities and colleges to prepare their sons for cultural and community leadership. Though these institutions extended preferential treatment to the sons of previous graduates, their entrance requirements were relatively lax. In a time before widespread public education, few who could afford to pay were turned away.
But beginning in the 1840s, the makeup of American society changed with waves of immigration that brought Catholics and Jews into the country in large numbers. As these emigrants flooded into the nation, write sociologists Deborah L. Coe and James D. Davidson, their presence threatened white Protestant groups who had previously dominated mainstream culture.
“As a result,” Coe and Davidson write, “anti-Catholic and anti-Semitic sentiments found their way into a variety of mechanisms that were created in response to the undesirable demographic changes.” This soon filtered into college admissions too.
Catholics quickly founded their own universities and encouraged members of their religion to attend them. So it was Jewish college enrollment that generated special concern at predominantly Protestant institutions.
Panic Over 'Undesirable' College Applicants
Institutions historically tolerated some Jewish students, but only those whom officials felt had the proper class standing and had appropriately “assimilated” into mainstream American culture.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, newer arrivals from majority Jewish enclaves didn’t fit that mold, so elite Protestants attempted to close ranks. University officials who bought into longstanding stereotypes of Jews as clannish, conniving, and socially undesirable worried that admitting Jews would taint the reputation of the schools. Plus, they disliked the idea of their sons being educated alongside them.
No longer was mere money sufficient for acceptance into elite social circles. As historian John Higham writes, Protestant elites of the era “grasped at social distinctions that were more than pecuniary,” including “the cult of genealogy.” Suddenly, institutions including social clubs, sports organizations, prep schools, and even neighborhoods emphasized family connections as part of the price of entry—shutting Jews out by default.
It was no different in higher education, where leaders were alarmed by rising Jewish enrollment. In response, they began to brainstorm how to limit Jewish applicants without endangering public funding or damaging their reputations.
Elite Universities’ Anti-Semitic Legacy
Yale University was one of those institutions. “There seems to be no question that the University as a whole has about all of this race that it can well handle,” wrote Robert Nelson Corwin, Yale’s admissions chairman, in 1922. Though Jewish students showed the same academic achievement as their counterparts, Corwin wrote, “members of this race…graduate from college as alien in morals and manners as they were upon admission.”
He recommended that Yale implement “non-intellectual requirements,” including letters of recommendation, in-person interviews, and psychological testing, to limit its number of Jews.
Corwin was far from alone. From Harvard to Rutgers, Columbia to Tufts, elite colleges and universities began trying anything and everything to control the makeup of their student bodies. Some implemented quotas to limit the number of Jews in new classes. Others focused recruiting in areas they knew had lower populations of Jews, and began looking more closely at extracurricular activities that indicated the social class and religion of applicants. More admissions requirements meant more reasons to turn down students—and a way to mask anti-Semitic school policies.
When Jews won more academic scholarships, schools like Harvard and Yale discontinued them in favor of financial aid. They also embraced the new field of psychological testing, offering tests that measured aptitude and not achievement, such as the Thorndike Tests for Mental Alertness.
“The primitive and biased tests effectively reduced Jewish enrollment [at Columbia] by half,” write education historians Jim Horn and Denise Wilburn, noting that many such tests were developed by eugenicists in search of “a purportedly objective way to quantify the structural racism of the day and to have it accepted as scientific.”
Another new requirement was so common it became almost ubiquitous during the period: the photograph. Historian Marianne R. Sanua writes that at Columbia, one fraternity publication satirically recommended that to get around newly tightened admissions requirements, applicants should dye their hair blonde, pretend they were taller, and have photos taken that downplayed stereotypically “Jewish” facial features.
Finally, higher education institutions also implemented internal legacy admissions policies, actively recruiting relatives of alumni and offering them a leg up on other applicants.
“All properly qualified sons of Dartmouth alumni and Dartmouth College officers will be accepted,” wrote Dartmouth College in its alumni magazine in 1922. The school also required applicants to submit multiple letters from Dartmouth alumni, promising that it would prioritize “men who plainly possess the qualities of leadership or qualities of outstanding promise” over those “qualified by high scholarship ranks but with no evidence of positive qualities otherwise.”
The Persistence of Legacy Admissions
As anti-Jewish sentiment became less mainstream in the wake of World War II and the Holocaust and with the rise of the civil rights movement, many universities phased out their more overtly anti-Semitic policies. But many of the restrictions put in place to limit Jewish applicants stuck. Standardized testing and interviews are still common requirements for college admissions, and today’s institutions of higher learning still admit more wealthy students.
One recent analysis found that children from the top 0.1 percent income bracket are more than twice as likely to gain admission to Ivy League schools compared to poorer students with the same test scores—and that 46 percent of their advantage can be attributed to admissions policies that extend preferential treatment to “legacy” students.
Despite some institutions like Amherst, Johns Hopkins, and Wesleyan announcing that they’ve abandoning the practice, the system is still common today. In a 2018 survey by Inside Higher Education, 42 percent of admissions directors at private colleges and universities said legacy status is a factor in their admissions process, compared to 6 percent at public institutions.
Among those institutions is Harvard, whose legacy admissions policy is now facing scrutiny by federal civil rights investigators. The Harvard Crimson reports that among its 2022 freshman class, more than 14 percent surveyed said they were legacy students, and self-reported legacies were likelier to be white. Over a third with one or more parents who attended Harvard reported a combined family income of $500,000 a year or more.
Will legacy admissions go the way of affirmative action? Until the results of the Department of Education’s reported investigation become clear, there’s no way of knowing. But many of the policies once implemented to keep Jews out of higher education in the U.S. are likely to persist.
