a/n: this is the first part of a new series. as usual the first part is a lil slow to set things up but I'm excited for what's to come of this one. there's going to be a lot of cuteness and all the things i love writing about in this one so i can't wait to share more !
this is part 1 of Bambi, read part 2 here
. . .
Most of the time Y/N didnât want to be in control of things.Â
From a young age, she had to be in charge of everything. She had three younger brothers and was born to a single mother who worked hard to keep everything afloat in their tiny, townhouse. So inevitably she became an adult before she could even buy a lottery ticket.Â
Her life wasnât bad, but it wasnât easy. With the constant nagging from her much younger siblings and the dampened sleeve of her t-shirtâevidence of the hours she spent comforting her mother through tearsâY/N had just had enough.
Her life had become an abundance of things she was struggling to keep up with. She had no reprieve throughout her daily life, no way of stopping or just letting go.Â
She worked six-hour shifts at the supermarket, studied marketing at university, did the school run in the mornings, and often in the evenings too, if her mother was too tired to get off the couch. She tutored her youngest brother, who was falling behind in math, and kept the house in order while all three of them stayed glued to the television.
Even worse, her social life was practically nonexistent.. She was twenty-one and spent her Friday nights making dino nuggets and catching up on an incessant amount of laundry from the past week.Â
Y/N wasnât sure where her life was heading. The loneliness and stress was so overwhelming she could barely breathe.Â
One night, the weight of it all brought her to tears as she thought about her future after graduation. Most of the girls she knew were planning gap years, travelling to places like Brazil or Italy. She tried to picture herself boarding a plane, but the only thing she could imagine was her mother calling mid-flight, asking her to pick up one of the boys from school.
She pulled open her phone eyes blotchy and nose stuffy from crying. Her loneliness was hitting her hard and she was desperate to feel some kind of connection, even if it was five minutes of conversation. So, she opened the only dating app she had on her phone, one that sheâd installed many moons ago when she wanted to open herself up to meeting new people.Â
She barely used it after realising she wasnât the best at small talk and whenever a guy would ask for a date, her introverted self would refuse to step foot out of the house. But on occasion sheâd find herself wondering, searching for someone to take her mind off of everything.Â
Y/N swiped past copious images of men, seemingly unphased by all of them. She swiped through so many, that they almost began to look the same - 5â9, tanned, shirtless or lifting weights trying to show some kind of strength that proved to women they were most definitely âmanlyâ.Â
When she started to believe all hope was lost, she paused when her eyes settled on a man who didnât look much like the others. He was tall, with brunette curls and green eyes that crinkled when he smiled. He wore rings on his hands in every single picture and in one of them he wore a shirt with the sleeves rolled up to reveal a sleeve of tattoos. In most of his pictures he wore comfy sweaters and knitted cardigans with grey or black trousers. In one of them he wore a pair of blue jeans and had a small, battered copy of The Catcher in the Rye in his back pocket.Â
She read his bio beneath.Â
âHarry, 30
Likes: scrabble, food, cats, books, cardigans
Dislikes: loud chewing, music played too low, emails, wearing sunglasses indoors at dinner is absolutely criminalâ
She clicked the heart on his profile, eyes widening when the words âMATCHâ appeared on the screen in big bubble writing. He hadnât sent her a message but clearly he had liked her own profile which was surprising considering she had barely anything on it.Â
As she was mulling over what to say to start the conversation, three bubbles quickly appeared then disappeared, replaced by a message. She held her breath, reading the words.Â
Harry: Hey, pretty dress
She frowned, wondering what he meant by that but then remembered she had a picture of her on her profile, showcasing one of her favourite dresses. It was a baby pink slip dress she had made out of silk fabric.Â
Y/N: Thank you, I made it! :)Â
Harry: You did? Wow! Looks better than most of the ones Iâve seen in my own store.
Y/N: Do you own a clothing store?
Harry: Something along those lines
Harry: Although they donât sell pretty dresses like yoursÂ
Y/N: Theyâre probably a lot better, I use cheap materialsÂ
She cringed at her message, hoping she didnât sound broke or not put together by saying she used something cheap.
Harry: Iâm even more impressed
She smiled, watching him type a new message.Â
Harry: What brings you here?
She tried to sum up how she was feeling without making herself seem like a weirdo. She didnât want to sound like a recluse looking for human interaction no matter how much she felt like it.Â
Y/N: Iâm tired of everything, just want someone to keep me companyÂ
Harry: I get that. Should I be worried? Are you okay?Â
Her heart warmed, she couldnât remember the last time someone asked her if she was okay.Â
Y/N: Iâm okay now, thank you for asking !! itâs just everyday life stuff.
Harry: Of course. Just let me know if thereâs anything you want to talk about. Iâm right here to listen⌠or readÂ
Y/N: thank you, that truly means a lot!! xx
Harry: No problem, love x
Y/Nâs heart flickered at the name he had placed on the end.Â
They texted for hours, well into the middle of the night. Y/N was giddy, rolling around on her bed, smiling so hard her cheeks ached. They had so much in commonâboth preferred quiet nights in, were family-oriented, loved literature and art and even fashion. He was funny and sweet, always checking in to make sure she was comfortable and that he wasnât overstepping with his questions. Despite how much they had in common, they had a lot of differences too.
Y/N: Is it raining where you are? Xx
Harry: Hm, just checked outside and I think the clouds are coming over. I donât mind though autumn happens to be my favourite season.
Y/N: omg really?Â
Harry: What? You donât agree?
Y/N: No omg are you kidding? Iâm much more into spring. I like that itâs sunny with a slight breeze so itâs warm but not too warm so you can still wear a sweater
Harry: Ahhh I see, you do give spring I must say
Y/N: You think so?
Harry: Even from looking at your pictures, you look like a tulip or something.Â
Harry: Or the little deer from that movie
Harry: What was it?
Harry: Bambi!
Harry: Maybe that should be your name - BambiÂ
Y/N: Thatâs one of my favourite movies !!Â
Y/N: I happened to think Bambi is a very pretty nameÂ
Harry: Then Iâll call you BambiÂ
Y/N: Well what should I call you?
Harry: Anything you like, BambiÂ
. . .Â
Y/N was working her shift at the supermarket. She was already entering her final hour, her stomach rumbling as she packed frozen pizzas onto the shelves. Although she had been working hard to get things done so she could go home on time, her mind was constantly wandering.Â
It had been a full week of talking to Harry. They had converted to messaging on WhatsApp after exchanging numbers and every day Y/N would wake up to a morning text message from him telling her to have a good day and that he would be right there in her pocket if she ever needed anything. In the evenings, he would make sure she wasnât going to sleep with anything heavy on her mind. Heâd ask her questions about what she ate and if she had any time to herself in the day. For the first time in a long time, Y/N felt a little less lonely. She went about her day with a little pep in her step feeling the excitement of texting the man she had only just met. She didnât know what it was about him but a part of her felt safe with him. Maybe it was the fact he was nine years older than her and knew what it was like to be under stress with so many things but he understood her in a way no one else did.Â
And Bambi.
Every day, it was Bambi this and Bambi that, and every time, sheâd swoon or smile at the nickname he had given her. It was silly, maybe even a little ridiculous, how much it affected her. But she couldnât help itâevery time he said it, a bubble of excitement grew inside her. She liked someone for the first time in a long time, and it brought something new, something light, into her overwhelming life.
After days of just simply texting, Y/N had asked him if he wanted to video call tonight. It would be her first time hearing what he sounded like and part of her was nervous. What if he came across differently from how he was over text? What if he didnât look the way he did in the numerous pictures he had sent her? What if after calling tonight, he didnât like her anymore?
Hours later, Y/N was tucked up in bed readying herself to call him. She had showered and blow-dried her hair, wearing her comfiest pink pyjamas with her body wrapped up in her duvet. Her thumb hovered over the call button, gnawing on her bottom lip as thoughts raced through her mind.
She gasped when Harryâs face appeared on her screen just seconds after she pressed call. It was their first time ever talking like this, and her heart raced as she took in the sight of him. He was sitting in a desk chair, a large framed artwork hanging on the wall behind him. His shirt was slightly rumpled, his tie loosened around the collar, and his curls fell lazily across his forehead. He looked so effortlessly handsome, it almost didnât seem real.
âHey,â he murmured, his voice breaking the stillness of her bedroom. It carried a warmth, soft and steady, like the glow of a campfire, and she felt herself melt under its gentle heat.
âH-Hi,â she squeaked, her cheeks immediately flushing with warmth. Her nerves bubbled up as she realized she was staring at him, trying to comprehend that this was actually happening. Surely she was dreaming, she pinched herself to make sure.Â
Harryâs eyes softened when he heard her shaky greeting. âYou alright?â he asked, the corner of his mouth lifting in a small, amused smile. His tone was gentle, almost teasing, but there was something deeper thereâlike he was studying her reaction and enjoying every second of it.
She nodded quickly, fumbling with the hem of her pyjama shirt. âIâm good! Just⌠surprised you answered so fast.â She giggled nervously, her voice high-pitched and sweet, like she couldnât quite believe this was happening. âI thought itâd take a few rings at least.â Her blush deepened as she tucked her knees up to her chest.
He chuckled softly, the sound rich and warm, making her heart flutter. âI was waiting for you to call,â he admitted, a soft smirk tugging at his lips.Â
Her heart skipped a beat, and she shyly glanced up at him through her lashes. âReally?â she asked, her voice soft and a little disbelieving.Â
He smiled, a slow, adoring smile that made her stomach flip. âYeah, really. Iâve been thinking about it all day.â His voice had that low, confident tone, but his gaze was gentle, like he wanted to make sure she knew he meant it. âThe only thing getting me through work.â
âYouâre still at work? Itâs nine-thirty!â she exclaimed, glancing at the clock in disbelief.
Harryâs lips curled into a playful smirk. âIs it past your bedtime, Bambi?â he teased, leaning back in his chair as he glanced at her through the screen.
Her heart stuttered hearing that nickname come from his own mouth. She felt like if the camera wasnât on, sheâd be floating around her room like a bright pink orb of light, âN-No,â she stammered, her cheeks flushing a soft pink. âBut shouldnât you be going home by now? Youâve been working all day.â
He let out a small chuckle, shrugging as he glanced down at the papers scattered across his desk. âGot a lot to catch up on. Too many late nights spent talking to you.â His voice was warm, laced with affection despite his teasing.
Her heart sank for a moment, guilt creeping in. Theyâd been texting non-stop for weeks, and she hadnât once thought about how it might be affecting his workload. Heâd told her before that he worked for a clothing company, and it suddenly hit her how busy he must be.
Noticing the shift in her expression, Harryâs voice softened. âYâthinking too much in that little head of yours?â he asked, cutting through her thoughts.
âMaybe a little,â she admitted quietly, biting her lip.
He shook his head, eyes never leaving hers. âYou know I didnât mean it as a bad thing, right? I love talking to you, Y/N. I think... I might even be a little obsessed with you,â he confessed, his smirk turning into a softer smile.
Her breath caught in her throat, and for a second, all she could do was stare at him, her heart thudding in her chest. âI-I think Iâm obsessed with you too,â she whispered, her voice barely audible.Â
âYeah?â His voice was full of warmth, a hint of disbelief in it, like he hadnât expected her to say it back. She nodded shyly, clutching her pillow tighter against her chest, her heart racing.
Harry huffed out a breath, rubbing a hand over his face to hide the wide grin that had taken over. âGod, youâre even cuter than I imagined,â he murmured, his words full of adoration.
They talked for hours, diving into everything and anything that crossed their minds. It was the longest conversation theyâd had since they started talking, and Y/N found herself more captivated by Harry than she thought was possible. The way he laughed, the way he listenedâit all just pulled her in deeper.
In the middle of her sentence, she noticed Harry looking at her with an unusually soft expression, his eyes filled with something she couldnât quite place. He suddenly spoke, cutting her off mid-thought. âCan I take you on a date?â His voice was gentle but firm, catching her completely off guard.
âO-Oh,â she stammered, blinking in surprise. She hadnât expected him to want to meet her so soon, but her heart leapt at the thought. âIâd like that,â she replied, a soft smile spreading across her face. âVery much.â
His own smile widened, a mix of relief and excitement in his eyes. âHow about Saturday evening? I could pick you up.â
âBut wouldnât that be too long of a drive?â she asked, biting her lip. She knew he lived in the city, about forty minutes away without traffic, and she didnât want to inconvenience him.
Harryâs expression didnât falter. âItâs not too far at all. Trust me, I donât mind,â he said confidently. âIâll pick you up at 8, sound good?â
Y/Nâs heart fluttered, the idea of seeing him in person making her pulse race. She nodded shyly, her voice barely above a whisper. âMhm, that sounds perfect.â
Harryâs grin grew, his eyes twinkling, âCan you wear the pretty dress you made?â
Y/N blushed, âYou donât want me to wear something a little more sophisticated?âÂ
âYâ can wear whatever makes you comfortable, I donât mind but I think Iâd like to see that little dress yâ made.âÂ
She nodded, stifling a yawn as it slipped out. It was getting late, and Harry was still at his office, working. âYâtired, lovie?â His voice softened.
âA little,â she lied, knowing full well she was more than exhausted. But the thought of ending the call made her chest tightenâshe wanted to keep him on the line, even just for a few more minutes.
Harry chuckled softly as if he could see right through her. âWhy donât you rest those pretty eyes for me, yeah?â he murmured, his voice low and soothing, the gentle authority in his words making her entire body relax. She practically melted at the sound, her heart skipping a beat.
âMâkay,â she whispered, her eyelids already heavy as she let herself sink deeper into the comfort of his voice.
âIâll be right here, alright?â he reassured her, his tone gentle and full of warmth.
She managed a soft smile, her words barely audible as her exhaustion overtook her. âPromise?â
âPromise Bambi,â he whispered, his voice the last thing she heard before sleep pulled her under.
. . .
âMr. Styles?â
Harry looked up from his computer, peering over the rims of his glasses. His receptionist, Lindsey, stood in the doorway. âThe samples for the newest collection have arrived. Would you like me to bring them in?â she asked, her voice polite but efficient, as always.
âYes, please, Lindsey,â he replied with a sigh, signing off another email before hitting send. The endless stream of tasks had him feeling drained.
Though Harry wasnât usually the type to show much warmth towards his employees, Lindsey was different. Sheâd been with him for yearsâlong enough to earn not just his respect, but his trust. She was one of the very few people he relied on within his company.Â
Harry was the CEO of Pleasing, a major fashion company he had built from the ground up. His first line had been designed in a small studio, crafted with his own hands and the help of a few close friends who still worked by his side. Now, it was a global brand. He was on Forbes 30 under 30 and had features in magazines like GQ. He was even in Time magazine for most influential people.Â
Despite all the success, his day-to-day life had become an endless loop of emails, business meetings, and deadlines. Time for anything outside of work was a luxury he couldnât afford. Lately, though, something, or rather someone, had started to make him reconsider how he spent his time.
He checked his phone once more having only picked it up a minute ago for the same reason. He hoped to see a message from Y/N, in fact he was eager to. Ever since he had messaged her on the only dating app he used, he hadnât thought of anyone else but her.Â
It had been a spur-of-the-moment decision, one born out of the loneliness that weighed heavier than ever that night. Harry sat in his dimly lit office, the silence around him almost suffocating. He hadnât dated in over a year, not since his last relationship, which had ended on a bitter note. That girl had taken advantage of him, using his desire of the relationship he wanted to manipulate him. She had drained his bank accounts, maxed out his credit cards on shopping sprees and lavish holidays with her friends, leaving him both financially and emotionally exhausted. After that, heâd grown wary of trusting anyone.
When he joined the website, he wasnât exactly hopeful. The chance of finding someone who truly understood his career and mirrored his desires in a relationship seemed slim.
But then he met his Bambi.Â
He hadnât been searching for anything specific that day, just scrolling aimlessly, but something about Y/Nâs profile made him pause. There was a warmth to her, a genuine spark that went beyond her pictures. She didnât seem to realise just how captivating she was, and that drew him in even more. It wasnât just her beautyâthough she was stunningâit was the way she spoke about the things she loved. Her messages were full of passion, filled with rambles about her favourite books, little moments in her day, or random thoughts that popped into her head.Â
Y/N had ignited something within him. He was excited for this newfound thing they had going on, a spark he hadnât felt in years. Every message from her left him smiling at his phone, wondering what sheâd say next. It was the kind of excitement that made the day feel a little brighter, knowing she was just a text away. He found himself looking forward to the simplest thingsâher daily updates, the way sheâd ramble about something sheâd seen or read, and even the photo updates sheâd send him of things she was doing.
For the first time in a long time, he found himself imagining what it would be like to share his life with someone, instead of the quiet solitude heâd grown so used to. He couldnât shake the thought of Y/N being that personâthe one to bring warmth into the corners of his once-lonely home. He pictured what it would be like to have someone in his space, their presence adding a new kind of lightness. Someone to be there in the small, everyday moments and to keep him company after a long day at the office.Â
He couldnât wait to meet her in real life, hold her in his hands and kiss the lips he spent nights dreaming about.Â
Harry snapped out of his daze when Lindsey opened the door and the manufacturers entered the room behind her, holding the fabric samples in their hands. They greeted him timidly, laying the samples on the table by the large floor-to-ceiling windows.Â
He walked over, black polished shoes clicking against the mahogany wood floor. He sighed when he took in the samples, he didnât need to feel them to know they werenât good enough. Uncapping the red pen, he drew a cross beside each sample, the men behind him releasing a shaky breath.Â
âCome back when you have what I want,â He murmured, dismissing them with a wave of his hand.Â
He checked the time on his watch and cursed. Today was his nieceâs birthday and he promised his sister heâd visit in time for her birthday party this afternoon. âLindsey,â He called, hearing her shoes against the floor before she opened the door to his office.Â
He pulled on his blazer, âIâve got to leave, did you wrap that gift I gave you the other day?âÂ
Lindsey frowned, âItâs under my desk but what about your meetings this afternoon?âÂ
âCancel them.â He shrugged.
His Porsche was parked out front by the time he stepped out of the building. He put the gift into the passenger seat and made a mental note to stop somewhere to buy a birthday card.Â
He glanced at his phone when a text came through.
Bambi: Half way through my shift. Itâs been pretty rough, sorry for the late reply xx
His heart leapt when Y/Nâs name appeared. He took his phone when he reached a red light and typed in a reply.
Harry: itâs okay lovie, call me when you finish yeah? x
He was desperate to speak to her even if it were just for a mere few seconds.Â
Making a left turn, he pulled into the parking lot of a small supermarket on the highway. It looked run down and old but there wasnât anywhere else he could go to before he reached his sister's house.
People sat outside, smoking cigarettes and drinking out of beer cans. He ignored the glances they made towards him and his car.Â
He stepped inside and walked along the aisles, pausing when he noticed someone stacking things onto a shelf. His heart skipped a beat when he saw her. She was wearing blue jeans and a fuzzy white sweater, her hair was braided and fastened with pink, silk bows. She wore wired earbuds, her pink ballerina flats tapping against the laminate flooring.Â
She must have felt his gaze because her head lifted, eyes widening as they met his. Her soft, pink lips parted slightly, and in that instant, it was as if the world shiftedâeverything falling perfectly into place between them, as though they were always meant to find each other naturally.Â
Harry hadnât noticed the sugar spilling from the bag she was holding until the store manager stormed over. âWhat the hell do you think youâre doing?â The sharp tone made Y/N jump, her body snapping upright as she stood frozen in front of her manager, fear flashing across her face.
âI-Iâm s-sorry, Iââ Y/N stammered, her voice trembling.
âHow many times do I have to hear the same excuse from you?â her manager snapped. âStupid, useless girl, costing me the whole damn shop.â
Y/Nâs bottom lip quivered, her eyes welling up with unshed tears. âI-I know... I promised it wouldnât happen again. It was an accident, really,â she whispered, her voice barely holding steady.
Harryâs frown deepened. Again? This had happened before?
From the way Y/N stood there, trying so hard not to cry, it was painfully clearâthis wasnât the first time her boss had spoken to her like this.
Harryâs jaw tightened as he watched the exchange, a surge of protectiveness rising in him. He had only known Y/N recently, but seeing her like thisâsmall, vulnerable, and clearly hurtâstirred something deep within him. He couldnât just stand there and let it happen.
âExcuse me,â Harry spoke up, his voice calm but firm, stepping closer. The store manager turned to him, annoyance flashing across his face.
âThis doesnât concern you,â the manager spat, his glare shifting to Harry.
âActually, I think it does,â Harry replied, his eyes steady on the man. âYou donât need to speak to her like that.â
The manager scoffed. âAnd who the hell are you?â
Harry didnât blink, his voice lowering. âSomeone who knows when respect is lacking.â
Y/N looked up at Harry, wide-eyed, as if she couldnât believe he was stepping in. Her heart raced, a mix of relief and anxiety bubbling inside her. She wasnât used to anyone standing up for her like this.
âY/N, why donât you take a minute?â Harry said softly, glancing over at her, his voice now gentle and reassuring. The tears in her eyes made his chest physically hurt. Heâd be quick with this useless piece of shit so he could give her all his attention.
She hesitated but then nodded, her gaze flicking between Harry and her boss. She quickly turned, slipping away from the confrontation, her hands shaking as she tried to compose herself.
Harry turned back to the manager, his calm exterior masking the frustration brewing underneath. âSpeak to her like that again, and I wonât hesitate to have this place torn down, brick by brick, and replaced with a building I own. Then youâll know firsthand what itâs like to deal with a real fucking manager.âÂ
With that, he turned on his heel, already making a mental note to have his team look into this place. It was clearly lacking in more ways than oneâenough to warrant being shut down for good he hoped.Â
Y/N stood behind the building, her back to him, shoulders trembling as she cried into her sleeve. Harryâs heart clenched at the sight. âHey, hey, hey,â he murmured softly, stepping forward and gently pulling her into his chest. âThaâs enough now, Bambi. Donât waste your tears on him,â he whispered, his large hand rubbing soothing circles on her back. Holding her close felt unexpectedly right, as if this was exactly where she belonged, even if the circumstances werenât ideal.
âIâm so embarrassed,â she sniffled, her voice small. âThis isnât how I wanted you to see me for the first time.â
His eyes softened with affection as he reached into his pocket, pulling out a handkerchief. Carefully, he wiped her tear-stained, blotchy cheeks, his touch tender. âYouâve got nothing to be embarrassed about, sweetheart,â he whispered, âSâalright now, yâ donât have to go back in there.â He cupped the back of her head, feeling how soft and silky her hair was. He couldnât seem to fathom that he was actually holding her after days of imagining what she would feel like.
She pulled away and for the first time Harry could get a proper look at her. He didnât think it possible for her to be even more beautiful than the pictures he had of her on her phone but she was. Her features were soft, cheeks permanently pink like the colour of tulips on a spring day, her lips were the perfect shape, so delicate like two petals pressed together. She was a walking angel.Â
âHey stranger,â He grinned, those perfect cheeks turning pink. If Harry had one goal in his life it was to make her all flustery and blushy.Â
âHi,â She peeped, hands fiddling in front of her.
Her eyes widened when she saw the tear stains on his shirt, the damp spots revealing the tiniest hint of the tattoos on his torso. âI-Iâm so sorry, I didnât mean to ruin your shirt,â She cringed.
âHey no need to apologise, âs not even ruined and Iâd rather you were okay than some easily replaceable shirt.â He assured her. âAre yâ sure youâre okay? Donât need to go in there and beat him up or anything,â
She smiled at that and the sight made his heart sing, âNo itâs okay. I-Iâm okay, thank you for looking out for me. I donât normally have people doing that very often.â
He frowned. He didnât like how often she spoke about how little help she got from other people. If anything, it made him want to take care of her even more than he already did.Â
âI should probably head back in. I still have three more hours of my shift,â she huffed, clearly reluctant. It was the last thing she wanted to do.
Harryâs expression softened, but his tone remained firm. âYou donât have to,â he said, his gaze holding hers, protective and unwavering.
Y/N frowned, uncertainty flickering in her eyes. âBut I need the job, Harry,â she whispered, her voice shaky. âI canât just leave.â
His jaw tightened at her words. He hated seeing her stuck in a place that didnât value her, where she wasnât respected. âI know you need the job,â he replied, gentler now, trying to ease her worry. âBut no job is worth being treated like that. Not by him.â
She bit her lip, glancing back at the store, anxiety clearly weighing on her. âWhat am I supposed to do, then? I canât afford to lose it.â
Harry stepped closer, his hand finding its way to her cheek, thumb brushing away a stray tear. âYouâre not going to lose anything,â he said softly. âLet me take care of it. Of you.â
Y/N blinked up at him, her heart pounding. âTake care of me?â
âCome work with me,â He offered.Â
There werenât many positions available at Pleasing, but Harry didnât care. Heâd make something workâanything to keep her from going back into that place and dealing with the jerk inside.
âIn the city? I... I canât do that, Harry. I still have school, and my brothers...â
âYou can work around it,â he said quickly, eager to find a solution. âIâll pay for your gas to and from the city, or Iâll have someone drive you. Hell, Iâll drive you myself if it makes you feel better. Whatever you need. Just donât stay here.â
He sighed softly, taking her small hand in his larger one, her warmth a comfort even as doubt flickered between them. âJust... think about it, yeah?â His thumb traced gentle circles on the back of her hand, trying to ease the tension.
Y/N hesitated but nodded slowly. âOkay,â she whispered, her voice barely above a murmur.
A grin spread across Harryâs face, his relief palpable. âThank you Bambi.â He swore he saw her pupils carve into love hearts at his words.Â
. . .Â
Y/N hadnât returned to her job at the store just as she promised Harry. It wasnât only because Harry was insistent she didnât go back but her manager had been pretty verbally abusive for quite some time now and she thought better than to go back and work for someone who was just plain mean.Â
A few days had passed and Saturday rolled around quickly. Y/N was giddy with excitement, preparing everything in time for Harry to pick her up to take her on their very first date this evening. She had arranged a babysitter to look after her brothers since her mother wouldnât be home until late. It wasnât often they splurged cash on hiring a babysitter but Y/N wasnât going to rearrange her date with Harry for anything.
Sheâd made a list of everything she needed to do: wash and blow dry her hair, shave every inch of her body, and paint her nails with the glazed pink polish sheâd ordered online. Her hair was in curlers as she carefully laid out her outfit for the eveningâa pink satin slip dress sheâd made herself, paired with white kitten heels that matched perfectly. With the season shifting into autumn, she added a thin white cardigan to keep her warm in case the night turned chilly on the way home.
She wanted to look perfect. Especially after the fiasco the other day when he had rescued her from her mean manager.Â
Everything seemed to move in slow motion the moment she laid eyes on the man from her phone. He was even more perfect than she had imaginedâtaller too. It still hadnât sunk in that she was about to go on a date with this manâthe one who wore a black suit to work and had saved her from cruel, terrifying managers.
And the way he spoke to her afterwards, comforting her with his big, heavy hands around her. She wanted him to pick her up and take her wherever he went.Â
Y/N sighed blissfully in front of her vanity. As Y/N finished her makeup, her phone buzzed with a message from Harry.Â
Harry: Just outside x
She peeked through the window, catching sight of him standing by a sleek black car, leaning casually against the door. He looked breathtaking in a fitted black suit, hands in his pockets as he scanned the street. Her nerves fluttered, a mixture of excitement and anticipation bubbling up. She took a deep breath, smoothed down her dress, and grabbed her cardigan before heading out the door.Â
The moment she stepped outside, Harryâs gaze snapped to her, dark and intense. He straightened up, eyes travelling over her form, taking in every detail of her appearance. The way he looked at her sent a shiver down her spine.
âYâ look stunning, Bambi,â he murmured, his deep voice sending shivers down her spine. He took a step closer, his large hand cupping her cheek, thumb grazing her soft skin. âAll this fâ me?â
Y/N blushed, biting her bottom lip nervously. âI-I wore the dress you wanted,â she mumbled shyly, looking up at him through her lashes, âDo you like it?âÂ
ââS perfect,â He murmured lowly.Â
âReady to go, sweetheart?â He opened the car door for her, watching as she slid into the passenger seat, her delicate form contrasting with the dark interior of his Porshe. Harryâs eyes lingered on her legs for a moment before he shut the door and walked around to his side.
Once inside, he reached over, resting his hand on her thigh, the warmth of his touch comforting her immediately. âYou nervous?â he asked, glancing at her with a small smile, though the look in his eyes held a trace of dominance.
âA little,â Y/N admitted, her voice soft and shy.
Harry gave her thigh a gentle squeeze. âYâ donât have to be nervous around me, love, promise âm not scary. Least of all tâ you.âÂ
Y/N smiled, loving how he made it clear she was different, that he treated her in a way no one else could. It warmed her to feel special, especially when that feeling was rare for her.
As they drove, their conversation flowed easily. Y/N found herself opening up more and more, rambling about anything that came to mind. Harry listened intently, his smile soft as he asked questions, showing genuine interest in everything she said. Her eyes sparkled in the dim light of the car, and each time she answered bashfully, his lips curved.Â
Y/Nâs eyebrows furrowed as they drove deeper into the city. The lights grew brighter, illuminating a part of town she rarely found herself inâwhere the wealthy lived, with towering apartment complexes and upscale restaurants lining the streets. Harry pulled over in front of a sleek Italian restaurant, where a man stood waiting by the curb.
âAre we allowed to park here?â Y/N asked, her face bathed in the glow of the restaurantâs lights.
Harry suppressed a grin at her confusion. âWhat do you mean?â
âWell⌠I just assumed we werenât eating here, which is totally fine! You donât need to impress me with a fancy restaurant.â Her cheeks flushed pink as she tried to clarify.
Harryâs lips curled into a teasing smirk. âWhat if I told you we are eating here?â
Y/Nâs eyes widened in disbelief. âA-are we?â
Without answering, Harry reached for her hand, brushing his lips over the back of it. âYâ too cute,â he murmured. âCome on, theyâre waiting for us.â He stepped out of the car, passing his keys to the valet standing nearby, before adjusting his blazer and moving to open the door for her, his hand stretched out toward her for her to grab onto.Â
Y/N hesitated, her mind reeling. There was no way they were eating at this restaurantâthe kind with a year-long reservation list and three Michelin stars. Sheâd heard rumours that a single course here could cost more than her entire paycheck for the week. But as she took his hand and stepped out, it felt impossible to believe this was really happening.
Harry intertwined their fingers, offering a brief nod to the waiter who opened the door for them. âHarry⌠are you sure? They probably donât have any tables for people just walking in,â she whispered.
He chuckled softly. âDonât worry, love. I made some arrangements.â
Her brows furrowed in surprise. âArrangements? How?â
Stopping at the âPlease Wait to Be Seatedâ sign, Harry finally turned to her with a playful twinkle in his eye. âI own the restaurant.â
Y/Nâs mouth fell open as a waiter approached, menus tucked neatly under his arm. âGood evening, Mr. Styles. Your table is ready.â
Feeling like she was in a dream, Y/N walked hand-in-hand with Harry to a private table near the large glass windows at the back. The breathtaking view of the cityâs skyline stretched out before them, and the table, set for two, was tucked away to offer them some privacy.Â
As they were seated, Y/N couldnât help but notice the quiet stares and murmurs from other guests. She knew Harry owned a clothing business, but⌠just how successful was he?
The waiter laid the menus out in front of them and left them to decide what they wanted to order. Y/N hadnât even noticed as her wide eyes gazed around the room at the glowing chandeliers.Â
Harry reached for her hand beneath the table, âAre yâ okay love?â He asked. Y/Nâs gaze snapped towards him, âI hope âs not too much.â
âH-Harry, I really appreciate you bringing me here, I mean even stepping inside is a dream come true, but⌠I c-canât afford this.â She felt awful saying it but it was true and it was better to tell him now than when sheâd finished her meal, she wouldnât want him thinking she was out for his money.
Harry frowned, âBambi, this is a date. Yâ donât have to pay for anything.â
âB-but I canât use your money.â She told him.Â
She couldnât hear it but Harryâs heart was singing in his chest. She was exactly what he was looking for someone totally opposite to all the women he had dated in his past.Â
He cupped her cheek in his hand, âLook at me Y/N,â Big, doe eyes gazed into his, âPlease stop worrying and let me take care of you. I know yâ havenât been given that in the past but âm here now and I want this. I wanted to bring yâ here and I want yâ to be spoiled and I want to treat you in the way you deserve. So can you pick something from the menu and let me look after you Bambi baby, please? Think you can do that?â
Her lips parted, slowly nodding her head but she quickly said one last thing, âYou donât have to take me to fancy places to make me feel spoiled Harry. I already feel spoiled enough just getting to be with you.â
He smiled, eyes glistening under the low light of the chandelier. He placed a hand on her thigh and squeezed as a small thank you. âHave you decided what youâre going to eat?â
"Hmmm," Harry grinned, watching Y/N's pouted lips as she studied the menu with intense concentration. "I can't decide between the truffle pasta or the smoked salmon!" she huffed, clearly torn.
"How about this," he offered with a shrug, "Iâll get the smoked salmon, you get the truffle pasta, and we can share? That way you can try both."
She glanced up at him, her brow furrowing slightly. âYou donât want something else?â
He had been planning on ordering the steak and potatoes, but seeing how much this small decision seemed to weigh on her, he didnât mind changing his mind. The smoked salmon was one of his favourite dishes anyway.
When the waiter came over, Harry confidently placed the order for both of them, which made Y/N visibly relax. She hated the pressure of ordering her own food, so the simple act of him taking charge made her feel instantly at ease.
âWeâll make sure to have your order as a priority, Mr. Styles,â the waiter nodded respectfully before walking away.
Y/Nâs eyes widened in surprise. âWow. They must really like you here.â
Harry chuckled softly, leaning back in his chair. âDidnât I mention I owned a clothing business?â
âMhm,â she nodded, âBut I thought it was just a boutique or something.â She shrugged, clearly unaware of the scale.
Harry laughed a warm, deep sound that made her stomach flip. âBambi,â he said, pulling her gently into his side until their cheeks were almost touching, âSee that guyâs sweater? That womanâs hat? And that ladyâs dress over there?â She nodded everytime he pointed towards them, her heart skipping a beat at their closeness. âWe made all of those.â
Her eyes widened in shock. âW-wait, you own Pleasing?â
Harry nodded, a small, proud smile tugging at the corner of his lips. Y/N couldnât even count how many times she had opened the Pleasing website, scrolling through pages of clothes she desperately wanted but couldnât afford. And now, she was sitting across from its ownerâno, she was on a date with him.
âMhm,â he hummed, pulling away slightly to gauge her reaction. "Which reminds me, have you given any more thought to the job?"
She had, actually. The idea had been rolling around in her mind ever since heâd mentioned it. "What's the role again?" she asked, trying to sound casual.
"My assistant," Harry replied smoothly. "Youâd help with emails, scheduling meetings, running errandsânothing too complicated. Just being my right hand.â
âWouldnât that be awkward, though? Since weâre, yâknow... dating?â
Harry smirked, catching the implication. "So, thereâs going to be a second date?" His teasing tone made her blush. âAnd if anything, it makes it better. Iâd get to see you every day instead of just texting."
âBut what about school?â Y/N asked, trying to think practically.
âWeâll figure it out,â he said easily. âWhatever you need. We can make it work.â
âShouldnât there be an interview or something?â she quipped, trying to lighten the moment, though her heart was racing.
Harry sighed dramatically, playing along. âAlright. Hello, Miss Y/L/N. Welcome to your official interview for the position of Mr. Stylesâ personal assistant.â
Y/N giggled, her nerves easing as she followed his lead. âWell, hello Mr. Styles. Thank you for having me.â
Harryâs lips curled into a smile, his eyes twinkling as he played along. âFirst question,â he said, leaning closer, their faces now just inches apart. âHow do you feel about spending every day with me? Answer carefullyâitâs a tough one.â
Y/N couldnât help but giggle, her cheeks flushing a soft pink. âWell, Mr. Styles, I think I could manage that.â
âGood answer,â he praised, his voice a low rumble that sent a shiver down her spine. âNext question: Can you handle a man whoâs very particular about his coffee?â
She tilted her head, raising an eyebrow in playful suspicion. âAre we talking normal particular, or... like, twelve-steps-to-make-a-single-cup particular?â
Harry chuckled, his dimples deepening. âMaybe somewhere in between. But donât worry, I can teach you.â
Y/N laughed softly, her nerves easing even more. Being around him was easy, naturalâlike slipping into something familiar and warm. âI think I could handle that.â
"One last question," Harry murmured, leaning in even closer. His gaze flickered to her lips for a brief second before locking back onto her eyes. "How do you feel about sneaking around with your boss?"
Her laughter died down, a trace of seriousness replacing it. She knew the risksâthings had to stay professional, no hint of their relationship could slip through especially since Harry would not only be her boss but was the Senior Director and had to have the respect of everyone. But still, she couldnât resist.
âI think it could be fun,â she whispered, her voice barely audible.
âGood,â He murmured, âI think youâve passed the test, Bambi,â Y/N noticed how close his lips were to hers, if she moved her face forward theyâd be touching, âAny questions?â
. . .Â
Harry pulled the car up to the curb just outside Y/Nâs house, the gentle hum of the engine fading as he switched it off. The street was quiet, the only light coming from the street lamps casting long shadows on the pavement. Inside her house, the windows were dark, and she silently hoped her brothers were already asleep, sparing her the awkwardness of explaining why she wasnât rushing inside.
The silence between them felt comfortable yet charged, neither making a move to leave. It was as if both of them knew the night shouldnât end yet, even though it had to at some point. Y/N looked down at her hands, nervously tracing the edge of her coat, stealing glances at Harry every few moments. He seemed deep in thought, his fingers drumming lightly on the steering wheel, but the same hesitation hung in the air between them.
âThanks for dinner,â she said softly, her voice breaking the silence.
He turned to her, his expression soft but intent, as if weighing every word. âDonât need tâ thank me Bambi,â he replied, his eyes lingering on her face a moment longer than necessary.Â
âI wish I didnât have to go home,â She huffed, looking down at her fingers on her lap.
Harryâs lips curved into a small smile, but there was a seriousness in his eyes. He leaned back in his seat, turning his body slightly toward her. âYâ want to go back to mine?â
She wanted nothing more, the pain of saying no physically paining her, âM-my brothers... they have school,â she murmured.
âS okay,â He smiled.Â
The air between them felt thick with unspoken feelings, and she could feel her heart race as the weight of his gaze settled on her. He reached over, gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear, his touch soft.
âBambi,â he said quietly, his voice suddenly more intimate, like he was laying something important on the table.
She turned to face him fully, her breath catching as his fingers brushed against her cheek, lingering just long enough to make her pulse race. The space between them seemed to vanish, and suddenly, all she could think about was the way his lips would feel against hers.
Neither of them spoke. The tension that had been simmering all evening finally boiled over. Harryâs hand cupped her cheek, and in that quiet moment under the dim streetlights, he leaned in.
The kiss was gentle at first, tentative, like they were both testing the waters. But as soon as their lips touched, a wave of emotion flooded over her, and she couldnât help but respond. Her hand found its way to the back of his neck, pulling him closer as the kiss deepened, slow and lingering. It wasnât rushed or hurriedâjust soft, warm, and full of everything Y/N had been dreaming about for longer than she cared to admit.Â
When they finally pulled apart, Harry rested his forehead against hers, both of them catching their breath, their lips still tingling from the kiss. His hand lingered on her cheek, as though neither of them was ready to let the moment slip away just yet.
Y/N opened her mouth to say something, maybe to break the silence or make a joke about how long theyâd waited for this. But before she could speak, a loud thud startled her. She turned her head, eyes widening as the lights in her house flickered on. And there they wereâher brothers, pressed against the living room window, grinning like fools and making exaggerated kissy faces at them.
âOh my God,â Y/N groaned, mortified. Her face flushed a deep shade of red as she fumbled with her seatbelt. "This is so embarrassing."
She pushed the door open and scrambled out of her seat, grabbing her purse in a flurry of panic. âI am so sorry, Harry. I-I have to go,â she stammered, her words tumbling out in a rush as she awkwardly tried to regain her composure. âThank you for dinner, a-and the kiss! Oh, and the job too!â
In her haste, her heel caught on a paving stone, and she stumbled slightly, her purse nearly slipping from her hand as she made her way toward the front door.
Harry watched her, his mouth half open, caught between amusement and disbelief. She was flustered, rambling, and absolutely adorable. He couldn't stop the soft chuckle that escaped him as he leaned back in his seat, shaking his head.
"Bambi!" he called out the car window, grinning. âI'll take that as a yes on the job?â
Y/N turned back briefly, her face flushed but her smile shy and genuine. âYes! Definitely yes!â she called over her shoulder, before hurrying inside, her brothers still laughing from the window.
As she disappeared through the door, Harry chuckled to himself, the warmth from their kiss still lingering. He turned the ignition on, shaking his head in disbelief at how the night had unfolded. It was far from the graceful goodbye he had imagined, but somehow, it felt perfect. He couldnât stop smiling as he pulled away from the curb.Â
Yeah, he thought to himself, that definitely meant she was taking the job.

Do the batfamily members ever get too into their undercover work? (Undercover in an office and theyre worried about spreadsheets, working in a warehouse and coming home complaining about missing parts)
Bruce: Status updates on your undercover missions. Dick, you first. What have you got down at the docks?
Dick: I haven't confirmed the Killer Croc sightings yet, but more importantly, our catch hasn't been measuring up to last year's. Tuna we're doing okay on, but the salmon population seems to be on the low end. I've contacted the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries but it'll be another 3-5 business days before they can come down and check it out.
Bruce: At least you're doing something to help. Jason?
Jason: Class was okay. I think the kids are warming up to me as their substitute while Mrs. Maloney is out on maternity leave. The average on the last vocabulary quiz was 83.53% so either I'm doing my job right or they need to be challenged. I'm worried about Tristan Lancy, though. He's normally a good student but his grades have been dropping recently and his parents don't seem like safe people to tell. I'll talk to him tomorrow and try to pair him up with a peer tutor if he needs it.
Bruce: Also see if he has any alternate contacts besides his parents. Tim, any updates at the chemical plant?
Tim: If by updates you mean OSHA violations, I could go on all week. We got a batch of new recruits today and they were just thrown into the workâno PPE, no safety training, nothing. This is what happens when you place production over employee well-being. I'm gonna file a complaint after this meeting. Also, I think the union will have something to say about the manager cutting people's lunch breaks short.
Bruce: I see. Damian? Please tell me you found something volunteering at the zoo.
Damian: Depends on how you define "found." While I have not obtained evidence of a mutant larvae black market, I did help some of the animals at the sanctuary make progress with their recovery. Bobo the monkey is healing from his broken arms and we're gradually getting him re-acclimated to climbing higher surfaces. Suzie the black bear was born a little prematurely but seems to be catching up to her peers in terms of growth. Lastly, we got a grant for additional wildcat research and enrichment. As an aside, we are having an educational seminar on European mountain goats this Friday at 3:30 and I expect all of you to be there.
Bruce: I'll put that on our calendars. Steph?
Steph: It's not really undercover work for me, just work. Anyway, yes the newest Batburger location is being used for money laundering. But I really need to vent about the customers for a sec. We don't open until 10 and at 9:30 this morning some moron was banging on our door demanding Jokerized cheese fries. Then right in the middle of the lunch rush, Janie got sick so I had to fill in as the cashier and it was hell. After that, I had to step in between a fight at the drive-thru because the customer claimed we only gave him nine pieces of his ten-piece Robin nuggets and tried to beat up the kid who took his order. And to top it all off, an entire high school hockey team came in five minutes before closing.
Bruce: Cass?
Cass, blowing balloons: Can't talk. Arranging bat mitzvah.
Bruce: Duke, you're my last hope.
Duke: Margie's bringing a peanut butter chocolate cake to the bake sale. I swiped her recipe and we can easily beat her. Her ganache is way too watery and just runs off the top of the cake, which isn't even leveled. She's also trying to do something with a raspberry filling that isn't working at all. It's like she couldn't decide on what to bring. The bake sale committee also asked if we can bring some apple pies because the original baker has to go out of town for a family emergency. I think we'll win if we bring them with some ice cream and a touch of caramel, even though this isn't a contest.
Bruce: Thank you. At least our most critical case has been taken care of.
Barbara: ...I'll save my book launch for later.

The Epitaph of Anything Goes
I decided that this morning I would talk about The Museum of Anything Goes and the subject of lost media.
For the uninitiated, The Museum of Anything Goes is an obscure "game" released in 1995 by Wayzata Technologies, a company that is so far under the radar that I was unable to find any useful information about it outside of TMoAG.
All I could uncover is that they published a few multimedia projects (which are essentially lost now) alongside some asset discs (clipart, SFX, etc.). That's it.
The brains behind Wayzata are even more difficult to locate these days: there are only two main names credited inside of TMoAG - Michael Markowski and Maxwell S. Robertson.
The game alleges that Michael and Maxwell are well known in the art world, but any additional information about the duo is scarce beyond the confines of the museum. Attempting to search for either name online turns up plenty of rabbit holes - but none of them have anything to do with the Michael and Maxwell responsible for TMoAG.
This is particularly fascinating because it essentially means that TMoAG is the only accessible record of their lives. Before we dig any deeper into that statement, let me step back and actually address what this game is.
The Museum of Anything Goes is, by definition, a virtual art museum. Functionally it's a prerendered point-and-click adventure game where you can explore a bunch of multimedia exhibits that give the surface-level impression of a children's edutainment game, but once you start exploring further it reveals a side that firmly plants the game's feet into a haze of substance abuse and surreal humor.
Many exhibits are essentially just toying around with the astonishing new powers of CD-ROM. Everything has to make noise. Everything has to spin and flitter around. There's an air of genuine excitement for the medium, and I can't help but find it extremely charming.
The game also functions as a scrapbook, filled to the brim with photos of random trips to the zoo and snow-mobile rides with friends. At one point we even get insight into something as specific as Michael's one-year job as a tutor at a Chicago middle school, where he talks about how it opened his eyes to how poorly funded and mismanaged the school system is.
It's simultaneously quaint and chilling to see so much personal history packed into a world doomed to obscurity. As I explore the deeper parts of the museum, I contemplate if the creators are still alive today. It's a bit morbid, but imagine that - you create a single obscure game with your friend and it's all the world can see. TMoAG is currently the only surviving piece that gives any insight into who these two men were.
While many exhibits are lighthearted or nonsensical, there are occasional moments where the game dips into the eerie.
One exhibit has the player kill a man by dropping him from the sky, and after burying him you open the coffin to a video of a rotting pig carcass being put into an incinerator.
Other exhibits just feature simple 3D renders shifting around a dark screen while haunting groans play in the background.
While I would never refer to the game as "scary," its darker moments combined with the occasional mature subject matter definitely begs the question: Who is this game for?
You have to remember that this game came out long before the concept of "alt-games" had become codified in the digital space. Sure, unconventional digital art had been around before the advent of 256 colors, but TMoAG was being sold on disk as a game! It came out 2 years after DOOM hit shelves!
The trend of using the PC for entertainment was certainly on the upswing around that time, but It's not like TMoAG had a massive audience to find a niche in. With its mature themes it certainly wasn't suited for the kids market either, so who was it for?
At the end of the day, it's a moot question. We already know the target audience for The Museum of Anything Goes: Nobody. It doesn't have an audience because by its nature, TMoAG wasn't being made FOR someone, it was being made BY someone. It's a raw, unfiltered form of personal expression.
I think games like these are pivotal, because they question why people assume a game has to exist for the sake of being a consumable product. TMoAG certainly has the shape of a product: it features an intro cutscene, it has a tutorial, it features intuitive UX, it even has a map! These are all features that are solely integrated to provide comfort to an end-user. But once you actually wander around the museum for a bit, you realize how bizarrely its packaging fits its contents.
I think TMoAG is criminally underrated. It's not because its core content contains some earth-shaking truth, it's because the game defied all odds and cheated death.
How many thousands of other personal projects were deemed a little "too exotic" to be archived? How much history was lost these past 40 years as the digital space evolved and ate its old skin?
God knows how many other TMoAGs we'll never learn about because they weren't lucky enough to be preserved.
The Museum of Anything Goes isn't just some nonsensical art piece, it's a grave marker for so much lost media. Its existence is a reminder that some people's lives were fossilized, then macerated into nothing because a construction company built a skyscraper over them. The only evidence we have of those other games existing is this little fossil that somehow slipped out from under the skyscraper unscathed.
Even though so much has been lost, TMoAG survives as an epitaph.

Warnings: stage names are used, OC has negative opinion about Taesan and Leehan in the beginning, mentions of social and parental pressure, the amount of banana milk consumed might not be healthy, hopefully not too ooc even though i wrote it within like 2 weeks after @restlessmaknae started sending me bonedo content
Words: 9.6k
Authorâs note: this is the product of the amount of Ann Liang books i binge read recently, the instagram algorithm and @restlessmaknaeâs marketing for Zicoâs kids. this really pulled me out of my writing slump, so thank you for that! honestly my first impression of Taesan was that he looks like a tsundere, so thatâs pretty much how it all started.
i'm pretty sure you guessed it; happy name day @restlessmaknae <3

You had been following your well-planned route to success for years. You had already taken advanced courses at a prestigious hagwon, a private after-school academy for the subjects you totally needed to ace at CSAT. You also offered tutoring services to underclassmen, volunteered at the local library during summer and carefully chose your extracurriculars to align with the ideal student vision SKY universities had. You only needed to follow through the plan in your senior year too and you would be fine. You would finally make it.
Needless to say Han Taesan wasnât part of your plans.
Yet, there he was standing right in front of the principalâs office where you were heading in all his 6 feet tall glory, his school uniformâs tie neatly done for once.
âWhat are you doing here?â You blurted out with no greeting when your steps slowly halted next to him, your jaw set and muscles tense.
Taesan turned his head slowly and looked at you impassively from under his dark fringe before speaking up in his raspy voice that made your classmates swoon whenever they heard him make a radio announcement.
âWhat does it look like?â He raised a brow as if he was telling you not to ask stupid things.
There could only be two kinds of reasons why somebody was called into the principalâs room: either very good or very bad. You had never gotten into trouble, so you were hoping for something positive but seeing the boy there wasnât really promising. Not because he was a troublemaker or a bad student. He might not have been a straight A student like yourself but he was the leader of the school radio club and he was also generally liked among his peers as far as you knew. Your wariness was more so because you didnât want to be associated with him in any way.
âOh, both of you are already here. Wonderful! Come in, come in,â the office door opened and Principal Im rushed you inside with a welcoming smile.
At least, you could be sure by then that the news wasn't anything too bad.
You took a step to follow the man inside at the same time Taesan moved next to you as well which made you momentarily falter. However the boy merely reached out and put a hand onto the doorâs edge to keep it from closing. You had to force yourself not to scoff at the fake gentleman-ish action and instead just duck under his arm to go inside the office.
You just sat down in one of the cushy chairs and smoothed out the lines of your school uniform skirt when you heard the door close and soon enough Taesan took the chair next to you.
âAlright, I wonât even waste your precious time since I know both of you are busy. I called the two of you here because as representatives of the senior classes, I would like the two of you to conduct interviews with your classmates and prepare a pre-recorded radio segment that can be broadcasted on graduation day. It can be about anything you want: what the studentsâ aspirations are or what they liked the best in high school. I trust you will do a great job,â the principal smiled at you hopefully but you could feel your own polite smile freeze onto your face. This was not how you imagined yourself spending the first term of senior year.
âButâŚâ
âYes, Y/N?â The principal looked at you expectantly and you could feel Taesanâs dark eyes on you as well which snapped you out of your confused stupor.
âWhy the two of us?â
âOf course, you can get others to help too if you want but you have exceptional organizing skills as I heard and Taesan already has experience with our recording system and editing softwares. You two were the first ones we could think of, but of course I canât force youâŚâ
âIt would be an honor, Principal Im,â you hurried to stop him there because there was no way you would have said no to a task like this. Not only because you could hardly say no anyways but also because it would look good on your resume. The only thing that bothered you was having to do it with a boy you could not stand. If you had that much time and you could do so, you would have gladly done it alone without his help but no matter how much you hated it, Principal Im was right: he had the skills to perfect a radio segment.
âGreat! If you donât have further questions, then good luck!â
âOkay, what about we meet after school to discuss the plans?â You asked immediately once you left the principal office because you had less than 5 minutes until first period and since you didnât share a class with Taesan, you rarely ran into each other unplanned (thank god) and you would need your color-coded planner from your bag to plan any further than the afternoon.
âI have a radio club thing until 6,â Taesan simply said, not offering any alternatives, so you let out a sigh. Of course. What did you expect?
âAnd I have academy classes every other day,â you pointed out because he wasnât the only one busy. âThen I can just email you your parts and we donât need toââ
âSo you can complain later that Iâm freeloading off your hard work? No thanks,â the boy interrupted you and your gaze sharpened at him. He leaned casually against the corridorâs wall, a hand reaching up to loosen his tie and tilted his head at you as if to challenge you to protest. âWe can make do during lunch hour.â
You opened your mouth, ready to tell him that you had plans already but going over your History notes, when it was just the first week of the term and you were ahead of the course work anyway, wasnât that necessary even though you hated giving in to his idea.
âOkay, letâs meet outside at the benches then,â you agreed, telling yourself to be the bigger person, and turned your back on the boy before he could see the frustration bubbling up in you.
You and Han Taesan had the kind of history that you didnât really like to revisit. Thatâs why your initial reaction was to roll your eyes whenever you heard his voice on the school radio or to puke your guts out when girls gushed about his âtsundere charmâ. Their words, not yours.
Actually you would have probably not cared about the guy if it wasnât for your model student campaign which he had ruined. Last year the school had run an event to choose a student representative by voting and every candidate could have a pre-recorded segment on the radio. You had your own carefully recorded and edited audio file with the best convincing speech you could prepare and emailed them the sharing link on time just to hear yourself sing your go-to karaoke song through the radio on the big day. In panic, you ran to the school radio broadcasting station only to find Taesan sitting there by the control panel with headphones over his ears, calmly letting the audio play well past the two minutes mark, seemingly not finding it weird at all that somebody tried to win the campaign with a karaoke rendition of a love song instead of saying a few words. As it turned out, you managed to share your entire recordings folder with the radio team but the club president, instead of playing the file titled campaign_speech_final.mp3, decided that AUD_20230326_192251.mp3 was the right track for your model student image. That week you not only lost that title to the gradeâs pretty boy, but you lost your pride as well and it was all Taesanâs fault. Not that he ever thought to apologize or right his wrongdoings. So no, you werenât looking forward to working with him at all.
He was late.
You had already dotted down six different questions and a rough program outline with your half-finished, now cold rosÊ pasta lunch menu on the side by the time Taesan put his tray down on the outdoor table.
âYou are late,â you picked at him right away which earned you a rather confused look.
âItâs still lunch hour,â he pointed out and dug into his own kimchi jjigae like he had all the time in the world. His behavior was seriously dancing on your nerves.
âWhatever. Letâs get into it,â you prompted because you didnât have time to argue about semantics or his attitude. âWe should divide the related tasks this week, finalize the questions and gather people for the interviews, then we can start on those next week.â
âWhatâs the rush? We have months until graduation,â Taesan questioned and while he was right (or because), you had the sudden urge to strangle him right there. You forced yourself to stay calm.
âWell, I donât like to leave things to the last minute. Closer to graduation, we will be busy with the exams and college applications anyway.â
âAs if you donât already have everything prepared,â he muttered absentmindedly, scooping more kimchi on his spoon, eating without a care.
You pursed your lips, annoyed. You needed to remind yourself again that you had no time nor the energy to argue with him if you wanted to get this discussion done before your upcoming English class.
âKhm⌠so we can agree on splitting the interviews between us, right? You interview your classmates and I will do mine. We just need a common question sheet,â you said, tapping the end of your pen on the table.
Whether it was the repetitive sound or your words, it managed to get Taesanâs attention. He looked up from his food and leaned forward on his elbows, his dark eyes sharpening their focus on you.
âHow would you record the interviews?â He asked, simply yet you had a feeling it was a tricky question.
âOn my phone?â You furrowed your brows. Wasnât it obvious? How else did he expect you to do it?
âThat wonât be good. We would have a huge difference in audio quality. So unless you are fine with that, you need proper equipment. I can borrow a portable mic from the radio club, but Iâm not trusting you with that.â
âExcuse me?â Your eyes widened in disbelief but Taesan didnât elaborate on his reason. Ridiculous. He was just looking for faults in your ideas.
You let out a huff of frustration.
âAre you that desperate that we work together?â
âItâs called professionalism, miss class president,â he taunted you, looking completely serious. âI donât want to broadcast anything under my name thatâs just âgood enoughâ.â
âDo you now?â You snorted and rolled your eyes. As if it wasnât him who played your singing for the entire school. Where was his professionalism then? Who was he to lecture you about it? But okay, you could be the bigger person if he was so freaking stubborn. âFine. We can do the interviews together with your fancy mic. These are the initial questions I thought of.â
You slid your open notebook towards him with questions about what they used to dream of becoming as a kid, what they want to be now, what colleges and majors they considered as well as their most memorable moment at the school and what they would tell their younger selves or their underclassmen. Taesan furrowed his brows as he was reading through the draft, probably dissecting each of your questions like a poor lab rat but eventually didnât say anything. You raised a brow at him when your eyes met and he just shrugged.
âSounds good to me,â he said which didnât really added value but at least he didnât find something to pick on in everything you did.
The rest of the discussion went easier as it was obvious that he would be the editor and you would organize the interviews. You were already mentally preparing a survey to send out to the students via the group chats you usually used for class president duties to see when they would be free to conduct the interview among the slots you offered. Taesan wasnât particularly enthusiastic about the hectic and busy scheduling in the upcoming weeks but eventually agreed to get it over with within two months tops. He must have realized too that the earlier you finished with this project, the sooner the two of you could part ways.
You had the first batch of interviews at the end of next week. After ruling out inconvenient locations, you ended up with the obvious option: doing the recordings in the school radio clubroom. You were against it at first because the last time you had been there you faced public humiliation, whispers behind your back for weeks about your singing and messed up campaign, but objectively speaking you knew it was the most reasonable choice, so you bit the bullet.
You arrived ahead of time, of course, but you were quite surprised that Taesan was already there too, setting up who-knows-what on the professional equipment. He looked up when the door opened, the sun hitting the side of his face, giving it a natural warm glow, a stark contrast to the coldness he often radiated. He acknowledged your presence with a nod then went back to his work, so you just put your stuff down next to the round table in the middle of the room and got ready with your nicely printed questionnaire.
For the most part, the interviews went well, the students showed up more or less on time for their own slot, Taesan let you do the talking, merely letting you know when a recording started or ended. It all started going down when the last interviewee for the day didnât show up. After five minutes passed, you texted Wonyoung asking politely whether she forgot the interview but she didnât answer. Ten more minutes of awkward silence while Taesan was playing (or texting, you couldnât tell) on his phone, you tried calling her but with no success. You started getting restless and frustrated.
âShe could have at least told us if she wasnât going to come,â you muttered more to yourself than anything when your next call went to the voicemail as well. It was such a waste of time just waiting.
âWhy do you always assume the worst of people? Maybe something happened and she canât make it. She could be too sick to care about you blowing up her KakaoTalk,â Taesan looked up from his phone and there was something in his eyes that made you feel like you were in the wrong, like you were a sulky child because generally it wasn't like you were always this pessimistic about people, but before you could have argued, Taesan sighed. âYou can go. I can interview her if she shows up until 6.â
Well, you could have taken his word and left. Wonyoung was his classmate and he probably didnât have anything better to do anyways. There was a set list of questions and not much to mess up. But just as he didnât want you to handle his beloved mic alone, you didnât want to leave it to him alone. So you just stubbornly held his gaze, trying to come up with a more profound reason when the clubroomâs door opened and Wonyoung stepped inside in the cheerleading squadâs PE clothes.
âSorry. Practice got delayed. Thanks for waiting for me,â she panted and Taesan sent you a âtold you soâ look which made you want to commit atrocities. You hated not being right and even more to be reminded of it.
âItâs okay. Catch your breath,â you turned to the girl with a reassuring smile but you were undeniably relieved when you could finally bid goodbye to her and pack up. It was getting late.
However, when you saw that Taesan was still saving the audio files and uploading them to your shared cloud folder, then putting away the recording device and the mic, you stalled around the door, feeling inconsiderate to leave earlier.
âJust go,â the boy muttered gently when he noticed your hesitation and you didnât need to be told twice.
On your way to the bus stop, you stopped by at your favorite corner convenience store for some banana milk and almost missed your bus but luckily the driver saw you running and stopped.
âThank you,â you bowed to the middle aged man who just mumbled something about youngsters these days, then tapped your transportation card against the sensor before looking for a place to sit.
Since it was past the rush hour, there were quite a few empty seats but there was one next to a familiar face close to the door. He had put on a hoodie over his uniform and had his head against the window, eyes closed but you would have easily recognized his long ass limbs everywhere. With the taste of your hurt pride still fresh on your tongue you walked past him, sitting down in the very back, only checking on Taesan a few times to see if he managed to wake up in time to get off at his stop.
Even without the interview project, senior year was busy. You felt like your days were piles of classes, homework, mock tests, real tests, tutoring and studying. Sometimes you memorized English vocabulary or dates for History class even during your lunch breaks or on bus rides because that way you could make the most out of your time. Some might have argued that you took it too seriously but if you wanted to get into the top universities of the country, you had to.
No wonder you spent the two hours you had between classes and tutoring on Friday in the library too, working on your Literature essay. It was kind of boring and you had a long week; you justified your frequent yawns and slow blinking. You didnât even notice when you slipped into a dreamless sleep, not until you woke up with your head over your folded arms on the table.
As you were still in the haze, instead of panicking that you might have missed your tutoring class, you slowly blinked yourself back into consciousness and the first thing you saw was a pair of eyes.
The boy sitting at the table next to yours was looking at you with something akin to the mix of concern and amusement but you were too busy committing the lovely almond shape and chocolate brown shade of his eyes to your memory to be bothered by it.
Then the realization hit you like a truck because it was no other than Han freaking Taesan.
Oh, did he always have such pretty eyes?
Realizing that you were staring, you quickly turned your gaze away, sat up properly and fixed your messy hair while mentally reprimanding yourself for letting your sleepiness take too much control over you.
You hastily checked the time on your watch, sighing in relief that you only napped for about 15 minutes, so you still had time to finish what you were doing. Which was Ah, right, your essay.
You cleared your throat as you focused back on your homework, pretending not to be hyper aware of every chair creaking or pen against paper scribbling sound coming from the table on your left.
The next batch of interviews were scheduled a week later and you did everything in your power to avoid Taesan, hoping that he would forget that embarrassing little encounter you had in the library. Not like he was looking for you either but now that you have become more aware of his presence, you suddenly noticed him everywhere. He wasnât just the subject of your classmatesâ talks and an annoying voice from the radio anymore, he was in the canteen, on your regular bus, on the corridor between classes. Really, you wondered if it was your mindâs self-sabotaging doing or you just managed to ignore him previously. Since you tended to be laser focused on what to do, often walking by people you know without recognizing them, it wouldnât have surprised you that much.
Still whenever you saw him, he was usually alone if not with juniors from the radio club, so you were a bit taken aback (and you werenât sure you were hiding it well) when a bunch of his friends from his class were already in the clubroom by the time you got there. The door was left ajar, so you could hear Jungwonâs bubbly laughter and Gyuvin teasing Taesan for âworking oh so diligentlyâ. They all fell silent when you pushed the door open wider and suddenly their attention was on you. Leehan patted Taesanâs upper back with a grin and muttered something about âboss lady is hereâ which earned him a glare.
âWe will be on our best behavior,â Jungwon saluted with a promise when it turned out they booked the first three slots of the session on purpose, so they could sit through each otherâs interviews. While you interviewed people by themselves, since the entire school would hear the edited version anyways, you supposed it couldnât be a problem if they really did behave. They were friends after all, if they wanted to share them why not?
Them chuckling at some parts of each otherâs answers or whisper-shouted hollering about future ambitions was a bit distracting but nothing seriously annoying. You could only hide your laugh with burying your face in your hands when Gyuvin recited a freshmen memory as his most memorable with a prank that ended with the four of them becoming friends. Apparently the day before the first termâs end, right on the edge of the summer holiday, Taesan had brought soap dispenser-shaped water guns into the PE changing rooms, so whenever somebody just tried to wash their hand, they got wet. It shouldnât have been funny since it was rather childish, but glancing at the always stern and intimidating Taesan and seeing him smile at the memory turned it into something lovely even if it ended with the four of them arguing about whose was the best prank out of all the ones they did over the years.
It was truly one of a kind to see Taesan interact with his friends, people he felt comfortable around. He suddenly became talkative and loud yet warm and gentle when he scolded Gyuvin like an Asian mom for falling asleep at Miss Leeâs class again but promised to send him his notes once he got home.
âWhat?â
âNothing,â you shrugged when he caught you red-handed watching him still after he literally pushed his friends out of the door.
Despite witnessing this side of him, if you wanted to be honest, it didnât quite sit right with you that he was friends with Kim Leehan. The popular boy might not have ever rubbed salt into your wounds by reminding you that he was chosen as the model student representative of the school instead of you who was the gradeâs academically best student, the defeat still hurt. You didnât like to lose in general. So while you knew it was a far-stretched idea, your mind couldnât stop coming up with scenarios to prove that Taesan sabotaged your campaign speech on purpose to help his friend and it made you irritable and restless during the rest of the interview sessions.
When you were finally alone, it made you blurt out:
âWas it a prank too?â
Taesan froze mid-movement when you spoke up. He was doing the finishing touches, getting ready to leave as it was just the two of you. He slid the headphones, which he used to make sure the recording quality was good, down around his neck.
âWhat?â He furrowed his brows, visibly confused and you werenât surprised, he had probably long forgotten how he had humiliated you.
âMy model student speech last year,â you said, your nails digging into your palms, bitterness sweeping into your features.
âI donât know what youâre talking about,â the boy claimed, firm in his standpoint which made you snort.
âOf course, you donât,â you muttered, then grabbed your bag and walked out of the door before you would say something you would regret.
A part of you thought that Taesan would ignore you the way you ignored him, especially after your callout (or whatever he wanted to call it), so it took you aback when the opposite happened.
As a class president you often had to help the homeroom teacher. It was nothing out of the ordinary when he called you into the teachersâ room and gave you a box of university application help books to hand out in class. It wasnât really heavy but there was no proper handle on the box, so you had to hold it against your chest and it made it hard to see the stairs in front of your feet as you walked up to the classroom.
Students came and went both ways around you, nobody really paying attention to you struggling not to fall and you let out a little sigh of relief when you reached the first landing of the staircase without tripping. You adjusted your grip on the big brown box and was about to go on when the box crashed into somebodyâs chest⌠or more like, stomach.
âSorry, IâŚâ
You were about to apologize automatically when you saw Taesan standing in front of you, very clearly on purpose. However, before you could have told him to move out of your way, he did the unthinkable: he easily took the box out of your hands, his knuckles brushing against your open palms as he did so.
âHey! Give it back!â You reached out for the box again once you snapped out of your stupor but the boyâs hold on it was too strong.
âStop being so stubborn for once,â he said, his quiet, deep voice washing over you in waves and then you could barely do anything but watch him turn around and walk up the stairs with ease, the box in his hands and his bag thrown over one of his shoulders.
You shuffled after him a bit awkwardly, halfway torn between being grateful because out of all people in the school only him was considerate enough to offer help and being offended and angry because what if he only did so because he pitied you now that he knew that you still held grudges over what happened last year.
That became a smaller worry though as you realized he was heading straight towards your classroom and you didnât even want to guess the rumors starting if even just one gossipy girl saw him help you. You grew more anxious the closer you got but Taesanâs steps halted right before he got to the door. You almost bumped into his back at the sudden pause.
âHere,â he turned to you with the box that you took gingerly, making sure you didnât touch this time.
âThanks,â you mumbled, actually meaning it but you couldnât tell with Taesanâs low hum and light on his feet disappearance if he believed you or not.
The third week of interviews went without a glitch. You were almost done which also added to your good mood. One less thing to worry about, one less to-do during your already busy weeks.
Taesan stayed behind in the clubroom this time too, hunching over the computer setup with the headphones on like always but for the first time you said bye. Or well your version of it.
âDonât stay too late,â you told him loud enough, so he could hear you through the headphones but turned on your heels before you could have seen his reaction.
It was a good day, you decided. You got praised by your Literature teacher for your essay on the themes of social class and Confucian values in your recent obligatory read. The interviews went smoothly and the corner CU had a 1+1 promotion for your favorite banana milk. You even caught the bus just in time, getting on the vehicle after two giggling students. It was busier now than usual because lots of students had to stay longer in preparation for the Freshmen Open Day.
Apologies falling from your lips, you made your way through the crowd in the front of the bus and looked for a seat in the back. Thatâs where you caught sight of Taesan with his bag on the seat next to him and when your eyes met, he pulled his stuff into his lap. You hesitated for a moment but that was pretty much the only place left and it would have been more awkward if you didnât take it. So you dropped the ignoring act, swung your bag to your front and sat down, drumming with your fingers on your knees. The bus departed from the stop and took a turn, the silence between the two of you becoming louder than the chatter around you.
You unzipped your bag and pulled out the banana milk bottles you just bought and held one out towards Taesan. The boy turned his head towards you, his dark eyes unsure and⌠was that blush on his cheeks? Your hands touched when he took the bottle from you, sending little tingles over your skin.
âWanna listen?â He held out one of the earbuds of his wired earphone that he always seemed to have with him. So old-fashioned, so cool.
You felt shy as you looked him in the eye because it was like sharing something intimate. Still, you took the audio device and put it inside your right ear, smiling as the unfamiliar beats of a slower western song played. You pierced through the lid of the banana milk with your straw and hid your smile behind your drink when you saw Taesan do the same.
Maybe you were just warming up to each other after weeks of working together but it gave you the push you needed to ask about what you were listening to and it started a whole monologue about the kind of music Taesan liked and how his father introduced it to him. Honestly, he listened to a lot of bands you heard of but couldnât really associate songs with and quite a few you hadnât even heard about. You didnât mind though, you liked listening to him talk about it, watching him gesture and slur his words when he got excited. It was a lovely side of him.
The bus ride never felt so short.
That one conversation and shared banana milk somehow led to daily song recommendations from the boy. He was always curious about your opinion even if you didnât like it. Soon enough he could guess pretty accurately if you would like a song or not, so he even created a Spotify playlist just for you that he updated frequently. This turn of events was surely unexpected but not at all bad.
You also got to know that he would have liked to study sound engineering in university and you told him about your own ambitions and why it was so important for you to have near perfect grades and all those achievements. Belatedly you realized that you had never told anybody how much impact it had on you that you were constantly compared to your cousins.
It was a new side of Taesan you got to know, a side he didnât show to just anybody and you realized it was the same with you. You hated showing weakness in front of others, yet it wasnât too bad to admit to him that you tended to be judgemental with people because nobody had really been patient with you either before labeling you this or that.
But texting over the phone was one thing, you werenât sure it would change anything in person. Sure, you had been seen together due to the interview project but that would be over soon. Not to mention you really didnât want to deal with high school gossip in your last school year. And yet, you couldnât help but look for Taesan whenever you were in the school canteen or near his clubroom. You caught yourself anticipating the radio announcements just to hear his voice. It was pathetic really, how fast you went from finding it annoying and purposefully ignoring him to waiting to see him.
Your heart did a little somersault when you actually saw him in the library one afternoon and only when you walked closer did you notice that he wasnât just leaning over his papers but he was sleeping soundly, his pencil still in his hand, his textbook getting wrinkled under his weight. Briefly you wondered whether you should have looked for another place since Taesan must have chosen this corner table far in the back to have some peace but you would have liked to believe that he wouldnât have minded you joining. After all, he waved to you casually like you were friends when you ran into each other on the corridors earlier that day.
Eventually, you pulled out the chair on the other side of the table and quietly put your study material down. You squinted at the books and printed papers around Taesan recognizing them as advanced Maths exercises on trigonometry. While you were trying to see if it was a sheet you had already done, something else caught your eyes instead. The light reflected on the silver bands around Taesanâs index and ring fingers down to the similar thin, metal bracelet he wore. You had never noticed that he wore accessories but you had never really paid attention to what he was wearing either (except his unmade tie). Or maybe due to the long sleeved uniform you couldnât even notice it but now that he had his sleeves rolled up and arms outstretched, you couldnât help but notice how long and elegant fingers he had, unfairly nice for a guy.
Taesan suddenly exhaled sharply which made you act on impulse. You leaned back in your chair and looked down at your randomly opened book just in case he woke up. However, his quiet sleeping noises soon returned to normal, so you deemed it safe to look up. You let out a relieved sigh when you saw his eyes still closed, his eyelashes casting a light shadow over his cheekbones. Dark strands of hair fell softly over his eyes and you werenât sure what came over you but maybe all those silly romance dramas were right when they thought girls couldnât stop themselves from brushing a boyâs fringe out of his eyes just once in their life. But just as you reached out, Taesan straightened his back and yawned like a cat, stretching his arms towards the sky. He blinked himself awake slowly but he froze the moment he noticed you right in front of him.
To make the situation less awkward for both of you, you smiled at him as casually as you could (which wasnât much thanks to your racing heartbeat but still, you tried) and turned to your book, flipping to the correct page you wanted to review. From the corner of your eyes, you saw Taesan fix his clothes and sit up properly before arranging his rumpled papers to continue the Maths exercises. He must have been stuck on a problem though because he kept sighing and going back to the same page in the workbook. After his sixth or so frustrated sound, you couldnât take it anymore.
âWhat are you stuck on? Maybe I can help,â you spoke up, closing your own book, so he would see your focus was on him.
âItâs fine,â he dismissed your offer so fast that you could tell he didnât even think about it. You were sure because that was what you tended to do too: claiming you could handle everything on your own. But still, sometimes wasnât it nice to receive help? Like how he had helped you with that box?
âOkay, then what about explaining it to me?â You changed your strategy because sometimes even that much could help: offering a listening ear. Maybe he could realize the mistake he was making in the equation while telling you about it.
You didnât even think about it, you just stood up and walked to Taesanâs side of the table, sitting down next to him, leaning closer to see his scratchy handwriting and the calculations he had been doing. You might have blushed when you realized just how close you were but you refused to show it. You took studying seriously after all. So you looked the boy in the eye with a challenge in yours until he gave in.
Four minutes later he found the trigonometric identity he used incorrectly.
After sharing songs through texts and studying together at the library, the next thing that became a routine for the two of you was visiting the corner convenience store whenever you left the school together. When it first happened, Taesan claimed he needed to buy something too but he was looking around in the snack aisle suspiciously long (you missed your usual bus that day), so the next time you told him that you would catch up to him at the bus stop, he didnât need to come with you. But more often than not, he went along with you anyways and ended up buying candies or chocolate bars. When you told Taesan about your go-to emotional support banana milk reminding you of your childhood, he told you that he wasnât really into sweet things, so he bought all these snacks for his younger siblings. One time he bought a pack of four cream milk breads just for the freebie PokĂŠmon toy that came with it because his little sister liked that character. It made you coo internally.
It wasnât always just the two of you though. One day you were going over the English vocabulary with Jihan from your class in the library when Taesan and Jungwon walked in and took the desk next to you, eventually joining the English quiz. Another time Leehan needed to stay after school too because of his model student representative duties (a photoshoot for the Freshmen Open Day brochures apparently and suddenly you werenât so sulky that you didnât get the title) and he decided to tag along when he saw Taesan and you head over to the nearby CU.
âAh, senior year is really hell. Everyoneâs so busy we barely have time to hangout after school anymore,â he justified himself while throwing an arm around Taesanâs shoulder. âJungwon told me you went to the library to study the other day. Since when do you do that? I thought you said being around so many people is distracting.â
You still heard Leehanâs voice as they disappeared into the snack aisle with the purpose of getting jellies and you walked forward to the refrigerated section, trying not to think too much into it. Maybe senior year changed Taesanâs mind, maybe he found the presence of others motivating now. Or maybe he just wanted to spend more time with you. The thought alone made you shy.
You were on schedule with the interviews and soon only the intro and outro as well as your own parts were missing. You wrote a script for the introduction and ending which Taesan improved with his experience of radio shows at school. You argued about whether your version with the âhigh school memories forever staying with youâ sentiment was too cringy or his âitâs only the beginningâ version was too vague but this time there was no harshness in your voice, there were no grudges held, it was only friendly banter as you went back and forth with arguments supporting your own ideas.
Eventually you managed to find a common ground, mentioning both the importance of keeping oneâs high school memories as a reminder of their formative years and youth as well as being ready for what was coming. It was not even a question that it would be recorded by Taesan because he really had a nice voice and while you tried to stay professional and pay attention to his pronunciation and the flow of the speech rather than him, you failed miserably. Luckily, Taesan had enough radio experience to know exactly what to do. He introduced the segment with ease and charm, captivating the audience (you, for now) and you had to clear your throat to focus when he finished reading.
âWe can start the interview with me,â you said, eager to get on with the tasks before Taesan could call you out on your behavior. He must have known your reason for the sudden change of attitude though because he smiled to himself, quiet but obvious about it, as he held the microphone out for you and hit record.
You knew all the questions by heart but still you waited for the boy to ask before you answered.
âWhen I was young, I wanted to have my own karaoke room. There was one on the basement floor in the building where I used to live and the owner auntie always gave me homemade honey biscuits. She seemed to be so joyful humming songs happily,â you said at the first question, glancing in Taesanâs direction briefly.
He must have been surprised â you were too â, because it wasnât the model student-like answer everybody was expecting of you like saying your dream had always been to become a doctor or lawyer. Honestly, you had your own answers prepared and memorized ever since the questions for the student interviews were finalized and approved by your teachers. But looking back at it now, you felt embarrassed because even though it was just an interview, it wasnât graded or judged, yet you had felt obligated to answer according to what other people would think of you. However, in the recent weeks as you got to know Taesan better, you realized that people would judge others without reason, without knowing them, even you. So you shouldnât have changed your whole personality just so you would fit into this image they had of you. Even if it was about your parentsâ or teachersâ expectation or your classmates calling you the teacherâs pet behind your back. You had been okay with the prejudices since high school was just one step in your foolproof plan to lead a successful life, you had been okay without building deep connections with other students because you had known that you would drift away after graduation anyways but only lately you realized that you could have had fun while also working hard. You could be yourself and let people closer. The world wasnât going to crumble, it wouldnât ruin your plans. You could be honest, both with yourself and others, because what was the worst thing that could happen? That they would judge you? They are doing it anyway, so it didn't matter.
âAnd now? Now Iâm applying for business majors. Iâ m not sure what exactly I would like to do with my life but I will get there. Who knows, maybe one day I will open a karaoke room, too,â you chuckled even though your ambitions were to build a bigger company, something creative and useful. You still had time to figure out the details.
In the beginning of the term you would have felt vulnerable sharing these about yourself in front of Taesan or the entire school because everybody expected you to know what you want to do with your life but now, it felt okay. You actually felt lighter, relieved. Especially because there was nothing akin to judging in Taesanâs eyes as he smiled at you from the other side of the table.
âPlease tell us about your most memorable high school memory,â he recited the last question after you went over all the others.
Previously, you would have said it was being chosen as a class president because it was an honor and a proof of hard work but now, your academic achievements didnât seem that important. What will you really remember when you will be older and think back on high school?
âHonestly, senior year so far has had some unexpected surprises, itâs hard to choose just one but maybe this one. Now,â you and me, just the two of us in the radio club room, being vulnerable yet not being judged. âI like the person I have been becoming ever since this senior interview project started and I think it's going to be a great memory one day.â
Silence embraced you as you finished talking, a bit nervous but without regrets. Taesan pressed a button and the recording stopped, ready to be saved.
âSo karaoke room, huh?â He asked and you kicked his shin under the table for that teasing grin on his face.
âYour turn,â you reminded him as you passed the mic and adjusted the headphones around your ears. By then, over so many interviews you were sure Taesan knew what was coming too but just for the show you asked him about his dream job as a child versus now as well as his higher education plans.
âBecoming a musician was my childhood dream. My entire family loves music, many of us play an instrument, so it felt natural,â Taesan said and even though you didnât know this, it wasnât hard to imagine given his love for music and all that knowledge about genres and classics. âAfter I joined the radio club, I realized that I like it a lot despite the fact that here we donât usually play music. So it would be cool to be a radio DJ on a music show one day but Iâm interested in the technology behind it all, thatâs why I will study sound engineering.â
You smiled to yourself because you had already known that latter part and it felt nice knowing you had come so far. After a few more answers, you got to the last question about his most memorable moment and Taesanâs feline eyes turned mischievous.
âHm, a fierce girl yelling my head off during a live school radio radioââ
âYah, be serious!â You interrupted him when you realized he was talking about what happened last year but your voice was more amused than scolding.
âI am serious,â Taesan claimed but there was a teasing tilt in his mouth. âItâs pretty memorable.â
âSo youâre saying I was the only girl interrupting you during a broadcast? Shocking,â you raised a brow at him, a small part of you feeling triumphant about the fact that in a way you were special even if your first actual meeting didnât have the best circumstances. Thank god that his microphone wasnât on when you showed up and straight up started questioning him. âAlso, just to clarify I wasn't yelling. I just expressed my bewilderment about why you were playing that audio.â
âThat was the only one under your name.â
âWhat?â You blinked, confused at Taesanâs quick response. He sounded like he meant it but you knew that couldnât have been true, they got access to your entire recording folder accidentally. So if he didnât see that, it meant he wasnât the one checking their emails.
âTo make sure things are running smoothly, we always have a script about our broadcasts and all the audio files are organized in linear order in a folder for that day. I just played what was prepared for me,â he explained and gosh, you felt so stupid.
All this time you thought he had been the one who chose the wrong file on purpose maybe to help his friend, maybe to just have a good laugh but it made sense that his juniors were more likely the ones doing such preparatory work.
âBut still, you could have stopped it instead of just letting it play,â you muttered, trying to justify your reaction.
âWell, at first I thought it was actually a pretty unique tactic and thenâŚâ Taesan scratched his nape and looked away, then shrugged as if he just convinced himself to tell you something that might be embarrassing. âTo be honest, I just liked your singing.â
At his words you felt the tip of your ears burn and heat spreading all over your cheeks. You were glad that the lighting in the room hid it well.
âWhy didnât you tell me?â You found yourself asking quietly because thinking back you werenât exactly nice to him.
Taesan gave you a look. Okay, true, you didnât really give him a chance to explain before antagonizing him. And then it must have been weird to just bring it up.
âRight. Um, sorry,â you mumbled, embarrassed due to your too quick judgment but the boy just shook his head as if he had never been mad at the injustice in the first place. âAbout your answer though, you have to cut it out.âÂ
Obviously with 60 people answering 6 questions, not everything would make it into the final cut, it would be more of a montage of answers, a glimpse of the seniorsâ lives and you didnât want to be reminded of that incident in front of the entire school. Not again.
âNope,â Taesan protested, popping the âpâ sound, teasing just to be difficult.
âIâm deleting it,â you warned him but you seriously miscalculated several things: there was no way you could have reached the computer before him and with him standing in front of the monitor and keyboard you didnât see anything. You tried to get hold of the mouse at the same time as looking over the boyâs shoulder but he made sure that he was always in the way which somehow turned into a one sided (struggle) wrestle match and honestly at that point you werenât even trying to achieve anything and both of you just laughed at your poor attempts.
âAm I interrupting something?â Spoke up a newcomer you didnât even notice. Sullyoon, another radio club member from the year, stood by the door visibly surprised to see you or well the current situation you were in: Taesan leaning against the desk in front of the computer and you pretty much plastered over him, trying to reach something behind his back.
âNo!â You objected vehemently and took two steps back, stumbling a bit. Taesan reached out to steady you by the forearm and only after he made sure you wouldnât fall did he turn to the girl from his club.
âIs everything alright?â
âYeah, I just forgot my buju here,â Sullyoon got over her surprise too and quickly retrieved the prettily decorated journal from one of the shelves. You watched her go and then buried your face in your hands because of embarrassment.
âEmotional support banana milk?â Taesan prompted after he saved the files and turned the computer off.
You smiled at him and followed him out closely. If you were any better off, you would have teased him about his flushed face but instead you just made him race you to the convenience store, so both of you would have an excuse if anyone asked about your red cheeks.
Now that all interviews were done, only the editing was left from the project and while you could have left it all to Taesan since he did the actual editing, you were there keeping him company all through it. First of all, you listened to all the raw material and decided which answers to include from each interviewee in the final cut and then you could help out when he needed a second opinion on the order or cut parts or whether the transition was smooth or not. When he was deep in the concentration mode, you just did homework or studied for upcoming tests. It took three sessions to finish it (you had to force Taesan to get his ass out of school during the second one because he was determined to finish it which past you would have appreciated but not even this project was worth losing proper meal schedule or sleep over it) and when you listened to the final version you were proud of what you had done, together.
âShould we celebrate?â You suggested once the file was sent to the principal and his secretary. You finished it pretty much on schedule and yet, you weren't as relieved as you thought you would be when you had first started it. But still, it was an achievement and you liked to celebrate small wins like this because if you didn't, who else would?
You meant it as in going out to eat something good. For example, in the tent restaurant two streets down the auntie was selling the best tteokbokki you had ever tried. But Taesan had his own idea.
âWhat about karaoke?â
âYah! Stop teasing!â You glared at him but you weren't actually mad, it started to turn into a private joke between the two of you.
âIâm not!â The boy insisted and all it took was his almost pout to convince you.
There were karaoke rooms on pretty much every other street in this neighborhood, so it wasn't hard to find one where you booked a room for an hour and bought snacks and drinks at the counter from the girl who looked like a bored university student.
You usually went to sing with a small group of girls from your class, so it was the first time that it was just you and a boy. And not just any boy but Han Taesan. Somehow it felt more special. Sure, he might have already heard you sing and said that he liked it, but you were shy, so you insisted that he would pick a song first. He chose Dean's 21 and totally nailed it, the karaoke machine's high score proving that you weren't just biased when you told him that. You had already liked his speaking voice but when he sang, oh boy! You could have listened to him for hours.
You went with a girl group song you were confident in and it was fun. Song after song you both hyped each other up and the one hour passed by quickly. A part of you wished you could just pay for one more and sing until your voice became hoarse but the rational part knew that you shouldn't have stayed out too late. You still had homework to do and Taesan needed to memorize those English words for tomorrow's test.
It was the same T side of you that went a bit ahead of you and started thinking about the midterms and then how busy you would get once summer ended and the last term rolled around. It was still months away and yet, you wondered if it took that much for you to drift apart or the end of this interview project would be enough. You were a bit scared to know the answer, just how you were scared to answer Jihan's question the other day when she saw you walk to class together with Taesan. Admitting out loud that you liked him would have made it real and it would have made you vulnerable. You weren't sure you were ready to do that but it was certain that you didn't want to lose him.
âTaesanâŚâ You spoke up quietly, swinging your feet back and forth on the bench in the bus stop after you spent the walk from the karaoke room to the stop in silence, lost in thought. The boy turned his head towards you, his fringe getting into his eyes, messy and beautiful. Your heart ached with the certainty only first love could. âNow that the radio segment is ready, will we go back to how we were?â You asked barely in a whisper as if speaking louder would have had its consequences. That was also why you had to rush to clarify. âBecause I donât want that. I⌠I would miss you too much.â
You didnât mean to say it like that and it was a scary thing to admit but it was worth all the extra beats of your heart to see Taesan smile, a shy little thing stretching slowly from one side to another, his eyes sparkling under the moonlight and street lampsâ glow.
âMe too,â he said and you reciprocated his smile. There was a short pause, an inhale of the universe waiting, then Taesan called your name and you looked up immediately.
âHm?â
He looked you in the eyes with those dark oceans of his. Once you associated them with the cold depth of the sea but since then you realized that you were wrong. You knew only a few people who had warmer souls than this boy.
âYou are my most memorable high school memory for a reason,â he whispered like it was a secret and a promise at the same time.
It left you speechless a moment too long and the bubble around you burst when the bus pulled up in front of you with a loud screeching sound. Taesan was quick on his feet but instead of getting on the bus right away, he looked back at you and held a hand out for you. You blamed it on not having time to think about it with the bus driver yelling at you impatiently and took it, following the boy onto the vehicle and to your usual place in the back with a smile on your face and a new rhythm in your heart.
Taesan didn't let go of your hand during the entire ride. As you closed your eyes and listened to the music he put on, you hoped he wouldnât let go for a long time.

I cant do this anymore - George Russell x Wolff! Reader Part 5
Plot: You are the daughter of Toto Wolff team principle of Mercedes-AMG Petronas, you've worked your whole life to become an engineer. However, your dad has other ideas for you and doesn't want you to become a race engineer. You start to confide more in the Red Bull Racing Team Principle to help you get an engineering job, and see him as your present father figure.
There was a pretty decent break between Brazil and Las Vegas, you spend the first week with Geri and Christian and their kids. You'd had a blast riding their horses, going for bike rides and lots of baking.
They of course let you stay with them in the spare bedroom, you went on a massive shopping spree with Geri getting some new clothes as you hadn't gone home and talked about everything you normally would with Suzie. You couldn't lie, you really missed her, especially the hugs she gave you.
However on the weekend before Vegas, Lewis had texted you seeing if you'd wanted to stay with him in Las Vegas for a bit. Lewis had known you since 2009, you were 9 years old. You always came to as many race weekends as you could, obsessed with F1 as much as your dad. You loved the fast cars and the smell of the fuel.
Here was were you were introduced to Suzie, it was perfect time really. You were a 9 year old girl, about to enter here teen years without a mother figure. And Suzie and you, got on like two peas in a pod.
In 2012 when he became the executive director in Williams you travelled with him. Your mum didn't want anything to do with you, so that left you to be home school. It wasn't easy in Williams, they were tight on money and resources despite Toto's financial contributions to the team and no-body had time for you it seemed.
The next year when your dad moved to Mercedes, that had a slightly bigger budget and more time around the paddock was when it became easier.
The engineers helped you with your math's and science while marketing and legal would help you with your English. That's where your love of engineering came from.
Lewis would often stay with you, he and Nico were like brothers and they couldn't help but see you like a little sister with the relentless teasing they put you through.
As you got older, Toto paid for you to have an online tutor so you could sit your GCSE's at some point. 2016 was probably the worst year you had on record apart from everything that's happened in 2023.
You could tell that when they started to compete for the championship in 2014 that things were getting tense between them, they tried to keep it to themselves but you could tell with the post race interviews and how they didn't want to hang out as much together with you.
But in 2016, when Nico won and their friendship had pretty much crumbled as far as it could you, you were also sitting those GCSE's and it was a really tough year for you. Lewis and Nico now spoke to you separately, their sides of the garage never crossing over like they used to.
So you not only had the stress of your GCSE's, the stress of your two role models no longer talking and with that your own childhood best friend cutting you off because of how much you travelled and your commitments not being strong enough. And to top it of Nico was confirmed to be leaving the sport which would mean you wouldn't see him as often.
However, despite everything that went on you came out with some really good grades, thanks to Lewis and his help when it come to studying.
You actually met George the year after when he became a junior driver for Mercedes. You had just turned 17 and he was 20 and part way working his way up through the feeder series into Formula One.
You actually had a crush on George all the way back then, Lewis convinced you it was just a silly little school girl crush you'd soon get over and motorsport men were a walking red flag. Which you found out was true with your first heartbreak when you dated an F2 driver that was the same age as you. You dad of course was hesitant at first, and he was right to be. He cheated on you with one of the insta models 7 months into your relationship.
Lewis did a lot for you and you guys were close, so you almost felt like you couldn't say no even though you didn't want to anyway.
You got the first flight you could out to his LA mansion.
"Hello" he greeted you as you'd found him in the airport with his security. There was of course Paps so it was only a short amount of time before people knew you were here with Lewis.
He drove the pair of you back to his LA home, you guys spent the rest of the week surfing, go-karting and walking Roscoe. Everyone knew you were here by now so you posted a photo dump on the Wednesday to Instagram, photos of everything you guys had been up to.
Everyone in the comments was so excited that big brother Lewis was back.
"So, I think now that we've had some time to chill out we should talk about the serious matters on the table" Lewis says as he spoons some of the vegan dish his private chef had made you guys.
"Mmmm?" you hum as you gobble more of the delightful food down.
"I miss you in the Mercedes Garage and the red bull top doesn't suit you" he says making your head whip to the side.
"Excuse me!" you nearly choke on your food.
"Look, I know what Toto and George did was foul... and others have made it into this whole dramatic show, but I miss teasing you in the garage and I miss you telling the engineers something was wrong and trying not to laugh! I miss you! Everyone does, George, Toto, Suz, all the hospitality and mechanics and the engineers!" he offers looking at you.
"I'm not coming back to Mercedes Lew, I've found my place in Red Bull, they've even let me help on the 2024 car! My dad turned me down straight away when i asked, they trust me there and they like my ideas! I'll talk to both of them okay, I promise but Red Bull stuck their neck out for me hiring me... so I owe them!" you admit, knowing Red Bull helped you a lot, as much as you'd helped them.
"I know I know, but just talk to them soon. They are both suffering and they regret what they did!"
You drove in Lewis car all the way to Nevada. It was only a 4 hour drive where you guys did make stops along the way. You guy's parted ways as you got there. He needed to be present for media duties and you had to be with Red Bull making sure the car was up to standard.
You checked in with everyone you hadn't seen for the two week gap, checking in with the mechanics making sure they though the car was looking okay after the race.
And before you knew it Max was coming out of FP1 in 4th, FP2 in 6th and FP3 in 4th. It was a new track and everyone was getting used to the it and how the car performed on it. In Practices it was more for the driver to get the feel for the car.
Max qualified P3, but because Carlos had to take a 10 place grid penalty he was moved up to P2. He was on the front line next to Charles Leclerc and if he got a good start he could finish again P1.
Vegas was a stressful race for everyone. Charles and his Ferrari was made for the layout of this street circuit it seemed. Lando had a really bad crash which had everyone worried.
Ferrari, once again fucked up their strategy as you called Max to box when the safety car was released. Charles had only pitted a few laps prior. Now Max and Sergio were on the fresher tires.
"Warm those tires up Max then when DRS is available go for that overtake on Turn 3 for P1" you advise as he rolls out of the pits behind the safety car that Charles was already following.
Eventually you had both Red Bulls in the front ready for a 1-2 podium. But on the final lap Charles went for the overtake on Sergio and broke the Red Bulls up, there was no way he'd catch up with Max but you told him to hold his position.
Again Max Verstappen had one his 18th race of the season and you'd been his race engineer for a whole new track. He'd pulled you into a massive hug, along with Christian who was impressed with how quickly you were adapting to the new role.
"Amazing driver guys! Straight to Abu Dhabi now!" Christian grins, nothing could now ruin his mood. Max had been confirmed Champion of the World a few races back but Red Bull still wanted to prove they were winners.
And that you did, you went to Abu Dhabi and one again by a landslide. You all celebrated the end of the season and Max asked you to come up on the podium with him again. However, George had come P3. so you were up on the Podium with him and Charles too.
The champagne was brought out and all the guys showered each other before coming over to you. They soaked you with the rest of the champagne the dark team gear sticking to your skin.
"Omg" you squeal as someone pulls back your top and dumps some of their champagne down your back. You swivel round to see George. Everything is so loud around you right now. Charles and Max are off celebrating the podium together a little further away from the pair of you now.
"George" you say looking up at him and he sheepishly takes a step back.
"George, no! I'm sorry I didn't speak to you sooner" you say looking at him, only for his head to cock to the side where he couldn't here you.
"What?" he shouts coming closer.
You lean in right up to his ear so that he can actually here you.
"I'm sorry I ignored you for so long. I was being childish. Lewis... Lewis talked some sense into me." you say.
"You-" he starts confused. He was the one that owed you an apology not the other way around.
"Y/N listen to me. Meet me tonight and we will talk about everything I promise!" he shouts making you able to hear him over the crowd.
"Okay!" you nod, before turning around and the Red Bull team all cheer as you hold up the trophy.
"Oh and George, Congrats of P3!" you grin, before joining Max and Charles.
Maybe it was time for you to talk it out. Maybe even to reach out to your dad! Lewis was as always right!

ONCE AGAIN
thank you for waiting for me, readers. i do hope you enjoy it ⥠my first aespa fic, awesome! i've been going through it, thus the lack of content, but things are looking up for me. take care of yourselves, until next time :-) pairing: male reader x winter; words: 6.5k ; categories: aespa, winter, reader insert, smut, slightly storyline heavy
Back in high school, there was a girl who shone above the rest, but wasnât necessarily popular. A girl who was a member of the math club, the photography club, and the dance team, whose evenings were filled with activities, who made many friends, but wasnât fawned over by the student body in the way the true popular kids were.Â
One evening, you were at school pretty late, tutoring in the library. You were so engrossed in your work that you didnât notice the time passing, until the janitor came in and told you heâd be needing to clean the library up, so youâd better scram. Backpack full of books, you rushed out of the library, and quickly made your way through the dark hallway. You turned the corner and nearly collided with a small girl, who grabbed onto your arm to steady herself.Â
âI-Iâm so sorry,â you said, and the girl looked up at you. Oh, perfect⌠âMinjeong, shit, Iâm sorryâŚâÂ
âHosang, what are you doing here so late?â Minjeong asked.Â
âUh, tutoring⌠You know my name?â you asked incredulously. She smoothed out your sleeve, folded the collar of your shirt down, and tucked her hair behind her ear.Â
âYou know mine, too,â she quipped and giggled before running to catch up with her dance team friends, leaving you without room to explain yourself. To explain that no, I promise it isnât weird, everyone knows your name, Minjeong, Iâm not a crazy stalker, and Iâm not here to spy on you through the gym windows while you dance. But you never got to explain yourself. To be fair, you did admire her from a distance. In the halls, at lunch, you wouldnât deny that you looked at her with heart-shaped eyes. As pretty as you thought she was, you didnât ever talk to her, something you would eventually regret.Â
Minjeong dropped out, and you didnât run into her again. After graduation, you headed off to Seoul to learn how to fly, and soon, you realized someone else had come, too. Billboards, advertisements, you name it. For a solid month, wherever you looked, you saw her.Â
The same Kim Minjeong who you nearly sacked in the hallway that night, who, instead of yelling or being upset, straightened your clothes and wished you a good night; who knew your name when you were nobody. She was Winter, now, styled with gorgeous long, blonde hair, imposed over ethereal backgrounds and colors. You had to give it to whatever company she was running with, they made that old crush of yours flare right back up again with the way they marketed that girl. Financially stable enough under an air charter company flying small private jets, you decided youâd buy a set of the groupâs albums when they debuted. Sitting on the floor of your apartment, pulling the photocards and posters out of those albums, you felt the full force of the regret from your school days: if youâd only talked to her in high school, you could have her number in your phone right this minute⌠But you were resigned now to being a fan, and a strongly biased one. Thatâs all you could be.Â
-
Charter piloting has benefits. Loads, surely. Youâre essentially a glorified taxi driver, charging rich business people and celebrities $20k for a one hour flight from Incheon to Jeju. Itâs morally wrong to allow a sucker to keep his money, right? As good as the pay, benefits, and overall experience are, the clientele⌠Well. Nothing you hate more than a stuck-up diva, and itâs even worse when youâre trapped in a flying metal tube with them. But you make do; the idol sightings you get on the job make all the asshole corporates worth it. From old school stars your parents might know, to drama actors and actresses, to the newest generation of idols, you welcomed a ton of each aboard, more than you could ever remember if you didnât write it down. Unforgettable guests come along now and then; a trio of Twice members one weekend, some big-name producers behind insurmountably popular groups for a surfing trip, and the casts of award-winning shows on celebratory benders. Unforgettable loses its meaning when your secretary hands you todayâs clipboard.Â
âThis is mine? Thought it was⌠UhâŚâ you trail off and your eyes widen. The secretary laughs behind the desk.
âI knew it! Youâre her fan, right? You always talk about Aespa. And I know you have her photocard in your wallet,â she winks at you as your face fills with an embarrassingly deep blush.Â
âItâs not just that, Jihye. I knew her in high school,â you say hesitantly.Â
âOh my God, itâs like a reunion!â the girl squeals. âWait, were you cool in high school?â she laughs.Â
âUh⌠I donât-âÂ
âYup, I knew it,â she says matter-of-factly. âLet me guess, the lame, nerdy guy had a crush on the cool-chick future idol?â
âNo! Well, I donât know,â you say. Your mind is too busy racing to think properly. The young secretary giggles to herself as you walk to the hangar. Preflight routines are difficult to complete when your mindâs racing faster than a Blackbird. Would she recognize you? Should you say something? Nah⌠Youâre kicking tires pretending to be busy and the door opens. The trail end of a conversationâŚÂ
â-ng is going to be your pilot. Heâs a great aviator and an even better tour guide, so Iâm sure heâll be happy to show you around the island,â Jihye says. That damn secretary.Â
âHosang? I feel like Iâve known someone with- oh, hi,â Minjeong stops abruptly when Jihye walks her around the aircraft to meet you. Long, wavy, dark hair, with bangs curled and blown out to mathematical perfection. Fair, unlined skin of a small and cute face. A simple and comfortable black sweater, a modest manicure, and plain, natural eye makeup. You bow shyly and wave.Â
âAll good to go?â Jihye asks with the most annoying smile in the world.Â
âYep,â you answer. Jihye departs and you welcome Minjeong to get comfortable while you finish up. A strange look occupies those perfect features as you give her a quick safety brief, then turn to enter the cockpit. Before the door closes behind you, âif you need anything, let me know.âÂ
Why are you cold with her? Why are you nervous? You hardly smiled at her or asked what she was traveling for⌠Pure white clouds roll calmly underneath you. You resolve to be nice to her, even if she doesnât recognize you, because letâs be real, itâs not her fault for not recognizing you. She meets tons of people. Youâre just some not-cool kid from high school who had a crush on the cool-chick future idol. A pilot report over the radio snaps you out of it as you enter Jeju Internationalâs airspace. Gusting winds and vertical movement, itâll be a bumpy ride down. You reach for the intercom.Â
âHey Minjeong, forgive me if I startled you. Looking at some rough air on the way down, but weâre about 20 minutes out. Iâd sit down and belt in if you arenât already, okay? Call if thereâs any issues, and think of what youâd like for dinner.â You toggle off the intercom and wonder where the hell that came from. What, Jihye said youâd be happy to show Minjeong around the island, right? So youâll show her. Your inner autopilot (funnyâŚ) takes over and you idly nudge the yoke for your approach phases. Wheels on the ground, hangar door shut, you stand and exit the cockpit. Minjeong looks up at you sleepily, and you sit across from her on one of the bench-style seats.Â
âSo⌠dinner ideas?â you ask. Minjeong stands up and points at you groggily, shuffling towards you until her finger pokes the center of your chest.Â
âYou. You went to my school, didnât you?â she says, tiredness dripping from her voice. You nod and meet her eyes. âHow come you didnât say anything?âÂ
âI didnât think youâd recognize meâŚâ you say softly, honestly. She moves her hand to your shoulder.
âWell youâre bigger, yeah, but⌠I recognize you. Bigger and taller. Same face,â she says. The smile canât be kept off your face, unfortunately, and Minjeong smiles too.Â
âYou sound really tired. Letâs get going,â you say. After a quick post-flight and signing off with the hangar staff, you face her and say: âGonna change really quick, then weâll head to dinner.â You slip into the FBO restroom and drop your duffel, then slip out of your annoyingly stiff white uniform shirt. You stare at yourself in the mirror for a moment, then pull on a plain black t-shirt before swapping your slacks for black jeans. One careful ruffle of the hair later, and youâre leaving the restroom to meet Minjeong in the hallway.Â
âAlright, ready.â You carry Minjeongâs luggage and she trails behind you, much like a puppy, on the way to the parking lot. The modest rent carâs parked right where the staff told you, so you open the door for Minjeong and she shoots you a confused smirk. You smile back, and hop into the driverâs seat.Â
âSo whatâs the occasion? Family in Jeju?â you ask.Â
âHonestly, I⌠When I get time off, I run a secret travel blog So I take vacations, and take pictures and stuff,â she says quietly. âI dunno, itâs kind of silly.âÂ
âHow come itâs silly? Sounds fun to me. Weâll have to go to some really cool places so you can write a good post, huh?â you reply. âNow, dinner?âÂ
âMm. Iâm too tired to think,â she mumbles. Great, now the pressureâs on you to pick something perfectâŚÂ
âHow about Black Pork Street? Could make for some good photos, and itâs really as good as people say it is,â you say and put the car in gear.Â
âSounds goodâŚâ she trails off. Really, really sleepy. But she makes an effort to talk to you. She makes an effort to keep the focus off of herself, and more on you; she asks you how graduation was, since she didnât go, and you really had to reach deep into your memory for that one. She asks you about flying, about why you chose it, about your life in Seoul, and about how you never ran into each other in the city. You hold yourself back from saying âwell no, Minjeong, we havenât run into each other in a city of 10 million people, with about 9,999,999 of those people being more interesting than me.â When you arrive, Minjeong is lively and excited, telling you about her camera and asking whatâs next after dinner. You kick yourself when you start wishing for a specific sort of dessert. Quit being dirty-minded, idiotâŚÂ
âLetâs go! Iâm hungry,â Minjeong says, dragging you out of your thoughts. She looks perfect taking photos on the street, pointing her camera at the sky, at signs, storefronts, plants, street cats. The way her eyes light up when she takes a good photo, runs over to show you, insists that you take a few of her; sheâs not much different than she was back then, huh? A person with a good heart. A person whose heart youâd like to learn.Â
âIs it our honeymoon? First date? Must be a first date, you look nervous,â the dorky waiter says, nodding to you. Minjeong laughs, and you blush; the difference between you.Â
âUh⌠J-just high school friends,â you manage to say. Minjeong jots notes and snaps photos throughout the meal, and as youâre serving up some pork belly for her, she takes a few photos.
âCâmon, make it look nice,â she whines.Â
âYouâre serious about this, huh?â you laugh.Â
âItâs⌠Itâs my baby. My project. My travel blog is like⌠I dunno, itâs a way for me to be creative, but not be Winter. Itâs a way to just be Minjeong,â she slowly explains. âTo have a space thatâs all my own. Where I can talk about stuff I like, and not worry about press, or netizens, or fans, or anti-fans.â
âI get it. A space of your own. I should call you Minjeong then, right?â you say, nodding your head a bit too fast and a bit too much. She smiles and nods. But she nods like a regular person, not like you.Â
Dinner passes without incident. If we can ignore the waiter thing. Do you look like a couple or something? Maybe you do compliment each other. Maybe you seem like high school sweethearts. Maybe you could be.Â
âHosang?â she says as she leans forward. âYou in there? Letâs go to the hotel!â You snap out of it for the second time and hop up to lead the way to the rent car. The paperwork Jihye gave you had most of the information listed for Minjeongâs trip, and the hotel sheâd be staying in was, of course, the Lotte City Hotel. No less grandeur for the princess. The GPS gets you there quickly, and you pull up to the front doors, leaving the car on as you grab Minjeongâs suitcase. Just as youâre rounding the front of the car and waving goodnight, she makes a confused face.
âWait, youâre leaving?â she whines. Minjeong the kidâŚÂ
âOh, uh, yeah. I was gonna head to the motel near the airport, thatâs where my room is. Did you need something else?â you say.Â
God, why do I sound like a customer service bot? âDid you need something else?â Seriously?Â
âI⌠I dunno, I guess I just wanted someone to hang out with,â she replies.
Oh. To hang out?Â
âOh, of course, Minjeong. Let me park, Iâll meet you,â you say. And sheâs waiting for you in the same spot once you return to the front door; she didnât even go inside. Her long, dark hairâs ruffled by the wind. Cute.Â
NO. Not cute. Not cute or pretty or hot. Sheâs my client, my customer, my responsibility; not my crush, my girlfriend, or my next body. Look at the ground or something, for the love of God, Hosang.Â
But looking at the ground canât keep her legs from your peripheral view. She walks through the sliding doors and you follow behind with her suitcase in your hand, and your duffel on your shoulder. Long, slender, perfect legs, and youâre looking right at them. You snap your gaze to the windows and pretend to be looking at the skyline through the windows while Minjeong checks in. After a moment, she turns to you and smiles.Â
âDo you have a swimsuit?â she asks. You shake your head. âThereâs shops on the bottom floors, go and find one, okay? Meet me on the sixth floor. Thereâs a pool! The pictures are gonna be perfect!âÂ
She shoves a room key into your hand and takes the bags from you. Youâre left in the lobby, dumbfounded, wondering how you should navigate this. A bellhop whistles at you.
âFirst night with her? Sheesh,â the young man says. âScore!â
âWeird situation, man. Weird as hell,â you trail off as you walk away, still shaking your head, more so to yourself now. Okay, shops. Swimsuit. You begin to feel insecurity nagging at you. Youâre lean, sure, but not perfect. Not as perfect as⌠Well, nevermind. Quickly, you make your way through the shops, and find a pair of rather plain, mid-length black trunks at a duty free shop, changing into them in the restroom and leaving your shirt on. The elevator ride lasts forever. And ever. And ever. Until the robotic voice announces,
Sixth floor.Â
The doors open and you walk quietly out to the open area of the pool. You see one figure in the water already. Sheâs facing the city, hugging the edge of the pool and gazing at the skyline. The water laps at her back, just below her shoulder blades, and the silky smooth skin of her back is laid out for you, with only thin bikini straps to cover it. Her arms and shoulders are small, toned, but soft. Fancams and jacket shoots could never do justice to the sculpted angel right in front of your face.Â
âHowâs the temperature?â you say. She turns around. Her top is composed of white strings and back fabric; conservative, but form-fitting to her chest, that Goldilocks chest, the perfect balance of size and shape. Her collarbones are distinct, curved, beautiful. Hell, every curve you can see is perfect, from the angle of her jaw to the base of her neck to the gentle taper of her arms.Â
âItâs heated,â she giggles. âCome on!â Insecurity. Nagging. Loudly.Â
âAre you sure? I can just hang out and take pictures for you up here, itâs not-â
âCome onnn,â she pleads. You turn away from her and slowly drag your shirt off, then kick your shoes and socks off near where Minjeong left hers. The water is slightly warmer than room temperature, and a welcome change from the chilly air. You sit yourself down on a ledge in the pool, and Minjeong swims to your side, sitting right next to you. Not close enough to touch.Â
âSee? Isnât it nice up here?â she says.
âIt is. Ever been to Jeju before?â you ask.
âNope. I think itâs even nicer with a good tour guide.âÂ
âAh, come on. Iâm not all that.âÂ
âYouâreâŚâ she trails off and sighs. Her hair tickles your shoulder when she leans into you. âI wish Iâd talked to you more back then.â
âHmm? Donât worry about it, thatâs way past us,â you mumble.
âSo⌠If I said I wanted to make up for lost time⌠What would you say?â she says and you feel her fingertips smoothly run over your leg under the water.Â
âI think Iâd ask where that idea came from,â you say breathlessly. She moves her hand to your waist, arm around your front.Â
âI always liked you. I just didnât think you liked me, you were always so quiet,â she says. Your hand, now, meets her waist, and your eyes meet hers.Â
âIs this okay? I mean⌠Can you do stuff like this? Now that youâre all famous and everything,â you say, struggling to form any words at all, overwhelmed by the electric sensations of skin on skin underwater. She cups your cheek with a wet hand and nods to the camera bag.Â
âCan I get some pictures for the blog? Before⌠Before I forget,â she finishes cautiously.
Before you forget, huh⌠Gonna make me take an impromptu bikini shoot of one of the most beautiful women ever. No big deal.Â
Minjeong disentangles from you; she tosses you a towel and you dry your hands, then power on the camera. Eyes fixed on the cameraâs display screen, you start shooting. She moves through pose after pose, and you can feel yourself hardening. How could you not? A perfect, slim, pale Minjeong, body covered with water droplets, her skin shining in the flash of the camera.Â
âWould you check and see if those ones are any good?â she calls to you. You begin scrolling through the photos, and sure, theyâre great. It would be hard to take a bad photo of her.Â
âYeah, these are good,â you say.Â
âLetâs take a few more, then we can relax a bit,â she says. The camera display switches back to photo mode, and you look through; this time, your heart stops. The screen shows you that Minjeong has shed her top, and now, the camera focuses on her bare breasts, nipples erect in the cold air, water streaming down her chest. Her hourglass shape is all the more prominent now, and you wonder how it would feel to run your hands all over her wet body. You begin to lower the camera, but she shakes her head. âThese are just for me. Please?âÂ
âJ-just for you?â you mumble, mostly to yourself. Her poses grow more erotic. She squeezes her breasts together with her arms, grabs them with her hands, and leans over for you to capture a shot of her from the side with her back arched. Now youâre definitely hard, no question about it, but at least now thereâs no way she could be mad at you for it. Itâs her fault. She moves towards you, and you set the camera on the ground next to the pool.Â
âHowâd they turn out?â she asks. Her arms reach around the back of your neck, and yours wrap around her waist.Â
âYouâre evil,â you say into her neck before planting a few kisses there.Â
âOh, how could you say that? It seems like you had a good time,â she says. Her hips grind forward against your cock; she wants you to know that she knows how hard sheâs gotten you. âYou know, to be really honest, Hosang, youâre the first guy I ever thought about while touching myself.âÂ
Really?Â
âWhy?âÂ
âYouâre an idiot- Oh, God,â sheâs interrupted by moans as you kiss further down her neck. âI just like you, okay?Â
âWell I just like you, too. Always did,â you say.Â
âI hope so. Otherwise this could be kind of awkward,â she giggles. You withdraw from her neck to place a kiss on her temple, and finally, on her lips. She tastes so sweet, lips so soft, tongue so aggressive. Her hand grabs onto your hair and she forces your head to turn so she can deepen the kiss. Minjeong seems hungry, desperate. You sit back on the ledge with your high school crush in your lap, her legs around your waist. Sheâs got both hands on your face, and she observes you like some sort of specimen.Â
âWhatâs, uh, whatâs up?â you say, eyebrows raised.
âYour face⌠As different as it is, it almost looks exactly the same as the face I fell for back then. And I think Iâm falling for it again,â she says. You begin to speak, but she places a finger over your lips. âI know what youâre gonna say. Just donât think about it right now. Donât. Think. About anything.â
Between her words, sheâs taking your hands in hers, and moving them to her bare chest. You swallow. Hard. Sheâs right. If only for tonight, for this weekend, for a week, you have to just let it go. Her breasts are soft, and she whimpers when you squeeze them. She giggles and moans through a toothy smile when you roll her nipples between your fingers. Minjeong is clay in your hands, melting under every single touch, and itâs your job to make this trip unforgettable for her, to mold her into shapes of pleasure sheâs never felt before.Â
âYou know thereâs a sauna,â she whispers through gasps.
âGood idea,â you reply. Water falls from both of your bodies when you stand up with her still wrapped around you, clinging to you like a koala bear to a tree. A quick jog from the pool to the sauna, but the wind still manages to chill you both to the bone. The sauna, though, is comfortably warm. Minjeong in your lap again, you sit on the wooden bench and she devours your neck. Her tongue and breath are hot against your skin and the steam begins to make you sweat already. She stands and takes hold of your hand, beckoning you to follow suit; you stand close to her and she looks up to meet your eyes. Small hands make their way to your waistband.Â
âCan I?â she asks softly. You help her slide the trunks down your legs, and your cock springs out, painfully hard, smacking your stomach. Her hand wraps around it immediately, and she moves in to kiss you again. She moves her tongue slowly against yours and her hand works your length all the while; her delicate fingers find the precum dripping from your tip and spread it generously. Delicately, she kneels; cautiously, she licks your cock from the base to the tip before latching onto the head and giving gentle suction. She looks up at you with her deep brown eyes and you place your hands on her head. Youâre gentle with her. Your fingers make their way through her hair, and you keep your hips as still as you can, so as not to overwhelm her. You feel the back of her throat suddenly, and a moan escapes your mouth briefly, before you slap your hand over it. Minjeong backs off and strokes you with her hand.
âDonât⌠I want to hear you,â she says. You feel your cock twitch, and you let out a sigh. A soft moan when her strokes speed up. âGoodâŚâÂ
âWhat if someone-â
âIf someone hears? Theyâll leave. Donât worry,â she says. She gives you a few more seconds of suction, tongue massaging your head, then stands back up. You switch places with her, only now, she casually strips her bottoms off and sits on the wooden bench. Her toned thighs spread apart slowly while you stand back to take her all in.Â
After all these years, there she is; imagine telling high school Hosang whatâs happening right now. Forget moaning her name while I jerk off⌠Sheâs right there.Â
Beads of sweat roll down your face and body. Minjeong, too; sheâs covered in dewdrops of her own. Somehow you think they must look better on her than they do on you. A deep breath, and you step towards her. Her chest rises and falls rapidly under your hands when you give her pert breasts some more attention. Youâre on your knees, now, watching her face contort and listening to her voice catch in her throat. If she never wore a bra again, youâd surely be happy. Kisses planted down her body, from her sternum down her stomach, halting at her hipline. You take a moment to stroke her thighs softly with your fingertips, and they shudder. More kisses for her legs, from her ankles up her calves to her inner thighs. Her sweat is salty and sweet. How will the rest of her taste? You look at her again.
"What do you like?" you ask.Â
"I⌠I don't know."
"When you touch yourself, how do you do it?"
"That's embarrassingâŚ"
"When you're using your hands, imagining they're mine, what do you do?"
"..."Â
"Show me, so I can do it for you." Minjeongâs eyes are half-lidded, lust-laden. When you look down at her perfect, trimmed pussy, itâs dripping; your words got to her. She takes hold of your right wrist and places your hand on her stomach, thumb on her clit.Â
âSlowly,â she whispers. You oblige, and slowly make circles on her clit, spreading her wetness over the sensitive nub. Her next move brings your left hand to her mouth. She sucks on your two middle fingers, taking them deeply into her mouth. Wet enough now, she moves your hand, palm up, near her pussy, and nods. âInside.â The walls of her pussy are so hot, so scorching hot, inch after inch engulfing your fingers. One curl of your fingers and sheâs cursing, moaning, bucking her hips. Poor girl must be starving.Â
âIs that good for you, Minjeong?â you say. Your voice seems like itâs dropped an octave and slowed down about half a measure. It doesnât matter; she canât answer you, anyway. Sheâs busy stuttering out your name. Temptation gets the best of you and you move your thumb away. Minjeong whines, but itâs soon replaced by a near scream when your thumb is replaced by your tongue. As expected, she tastes incredible, some remnants of salt water from the pool, but overwhelmingly sweet underneath. She clenches around your fingers a bit.
âF- Oh my fucking-â Minjeong stutters. Her eyes roll back in her head. Her delicate fingers grip your hair, not so delicately. Rapid, shuddering breaths cause her toned stomach to rise and fall quickly, her arms and legs jerk, and the salty and sweet flavor floods your tongue. Unlatched from your hair, Minjeongâs hands grab your face and yank you up towards her face; as you stand, the tip of your cock grazes over her clit.Â
âWhoops,â she whispers. Her lips are warm and smooth when they lock onto yours. And you feel her hand creep down your abdomen. Your attempt to break the kiss is foiled with Minjeongâs arm around the back of your head, and her other hand moves up and down your shaft. Sheâs devious, smiling into the kiss as you fill her mouth with moans, tightly gripping your cock and twisting her hand with her up and down motions.Â
Kim Minjeong from high school is jerking me off. Kim Winter from Aespa is jerking me off.Â
Itâs a mindfuck. She kneads the back of your neck and sucks on your tongue. You canât fuck her in a public sauna⌠Can you?Â
âMinjeongâŚâ you whisper against her cheek. She looks at you innocently. Like someone who isnât driving you crazy.Â
âWhat?â she giggles.Â
âHow about we go to your room? Could be bad if, you know, someone sees us,â you mumble.Â
âHow about once here, and a few more times there?â she says with a wink. âItâs late, baby⌠No one will come up.âÂ
âBaby.âÂ
Minjeong guides you towards her pussy with the hand that had never left your cock. Her legs rest on your shoulders, and you grip her pillowy soft thighs to brace yourself for impact, for entry. Her heat begins to swallow your length, quite easily due to how wet and aroused she is, and she makes the hottest noise sheâs made the whole night. And now youâre hilted in Kim Minjeong in a hotel sauna with an unlocked door. Her nails scratch at your chest and shoulders frantically.Â
âGod, so fullâŚâ she moans.Â
âYou want me to fuck you now?â you put the sultry voice back on. She nods. âWhen youâre using your toys, imagining theyâre meâŚâÂ
âPlease, Hosang, just fuck me,â she pleads. âHowever you want. However you need.â Itâs all you need to hear, certainly. You pull out nearly all the way, and watch your cock disappear inside of her with a grunt. Your thumbs nearly touch as you wrap your hands around her small waist to pull her down around your shaft with every thrust. All inhibitions are gone, any restraints have been lifted; youâre slamming into her hard, and the both of you moan loudly enough for the reception desk to hear. Minjeongâs tight abs contract and relax under your hands, you look at her face to see her drooling with her eyes rolled back. Like, actually, really drooling.Â
âFuck, babe⌠Youâre really enjoying this, huh?â you say gruffly. You swipe your thumb over her chin and she leans down to suck on it instead. Lustful eyes meet your gaze and your thumb pops out of her lips.Â
âIâve been waiting so long,â she says. A quick sigh to punctuate her sentence. âSo many yearsâŚâÂ
âWell-â you try to speak, but she clenches herself around you. âFuck. I donât think I can wait any longer than I already have-â
âPull out baby,â she sighs. âI want to swallow you.âÂ
Regretfully, you withdraw from Minjeongâs tight hole, but the steam keeps your cock rather warm while she kneels down. After a lick from the base to the tip, she takes you all the way into her throat. She takes your hands and places them on her head, looking up at you sinfully. With fistfuls of her dark hair, you pull back, and thrust in again. She gags and coughs, but she never gives up, and soon, youâre shooting rope after rope, nearly convulsing in pleasure. She strokes you into her open mouth, wringing every drop out of your spent cock. When sheâs satisfied, she swallows and stands up to kiss your neck and chest.Â
âHow about⌠How about we go to the room?â she says.Â
âYou want me to stay with you tonight?â you ask. She laughs a bit. Her laugh is fluttering and adorable, a sharp contrast with the noises she was making moments earlier.
âOf course.âÂ
-
After getting dressed and gathering Minjeongâs things, you head upstairs. In the elevator, you stand behind her; she grinds back onto your groin and brings your hands to her chest. Floors fly by and the number on the small screen goes up as you massage her chest and her delicate moans get you painfully hard once again. She rushes in front of you to the room, giving you another view of those creamy, toned legs, and you do your best to catch up. Once inside, she sits on the bed in front of you and waits. Her hands travel slowly from her hips to her knees, and even slower she parts them with her hands to reveal the glistening skin peeking out from her bikini. Her breath hitches when you step forward and gaze down at her.Â
âI showed you what to do last time,â Minjeong whispers. âI want to see what youâll do on your own.âÂ
âNo pressure, right?â you joke, and she smiles. Her thighs are soft and malleable in your hands, and her neck softer under your lips. You untie the bikini top and cast it to the side, then kiss further and further down her neck. Kisses travel down her neck, over her collarbones, down to her sternum. Thereâs still salt from the pool on her skin, and you lick towards her nipple before giving it a bite. Minjeong jumps slightly and closes her fists in your hair. Your mouth works on one nipple and your hand kneads the other breast, perfectly sized for your hand. After switching sides once or twice, you kiss her stomach. Her hands move to your shoulders as you kneel on the floor in front of her.
Minjeongâs legs are wide open. You slide your fingers into the waistband of the swimsuit and slowly drag the bottoms down. More kisses travel from her knees across her inner thighs and up to her hip bones. Sheâs still dripping for you and you drag your tongue upwards over her pussy slowly to savor her. You spit on your fingers and slip them inside of her easily.Â
âOhhh my God-â she whispers and bucks her hips. âGo fasterâŚâÂ
âMm, so impatient, Minjeong,â you reply. Your tongue returns to her clit and makes smooth circles. She tenses around your fingers when you curl them back towards you, her moans growing louder, grip on your hair growing stronger. Taking her by surprise, you withdraw your fingers and stand up. While her hands work automatically on pulling your swim trunks down, you take a moment to just gaze at her. Her ruffled, semi-wet hair, strands sticking to her forehead and swaying wildly as she kisses up your thighs. Her flushed, glistening skin, cheeks inflating and deflating with the waves of pleasure coursing up your torso as your length disappears into her mouth again. Her pretty shoulders and arms. Her nose buried in your stomach.
Fuck.Â
âYouâre really good at that,â you moan. With a yelp Minjeong is scooped up into your arms and tossed, more or less, onto the pristine hotel bed. She pats the bed beside her, and you get the message. You lie back and let her mount you. She guides your tip to her entrance, and once in line, she slams her hips down aggressively. Youâre content to let her ride. Her body moves in mesmerizing ways as she grinds on you, seeking the best angle for your cock to rub against all the right places. Just as soon as you begin thrusting into her, your phone starts ringing.Â
âDammit, sorry, Minjeong,â you curse and remove the girl from your lap. Fucking spam call? Really? With the phone silenced, you turn around to see her lying back on the pillows.Â
Like an animal, you crawl towards her; you feel like one at least, with the way your cock is throbbing. She pulls her legs up for you, and you guide your tip towards her dripping center. The warm feeling envelops you again and you sigh, eyes closed. Your hands find her waist and keep her torso still while you begin to drive into her. You almost canât even hear her whines anymore, her voice punctuated by each thrust, curses and iterations of your name following every other sound.
â-nside me,â Minjeongâs voice fades in as your stupor breaks a bit. You lean forward and make a confused expression. âCum inside me. I want to feel you fill meâŚâÂ
And something about the way she says it just obliterates any second thoughts you may or may not have had. Her high, airy voice, begging for such an impure action, intensifies the warm, wet pleasure surrounding your cock. It only gets warmer and wetter as your cum dumps into Minjeong, deeper and deeper inside of her, coating your shaft, dribbling out onto the sheets. Your thrusts slow down, but your dick stays inside; youâre tired. You wrap your arms around her waist, and lie down gently on top of her with your face in her neck. She administers gentle scratches to your scalp.Â
âYou came so much, Hosang,â she whispers. Her legs settle around your back.Â
âDrained all my energy,â you laugh weakly.Â
âYouâre heavy. Can we switch?â she says. So you do; you roll onto your back. Your cock slips out in the meantime, and you both laugh about it. She fits in your arms like she was made for them.
For a long while you lie there. The cold air condition and the crisp sheets are a welcome contrast to your steaming hot skin and the panting, sweating furnace lying on top of you. Minjeong painstakingly brings her hand to your cheek and kisses the other with soft lips. A slow blink. A thought in your mind.Â
Is this what it feels like?
âWhat are you thinking about?â she asks. She knows.Â
âHow do you feel about me?â you reply. Her expression is mixed.
âHow do I feel⌠I feel like thereâs a reason we ended up on this trip together,â she answers. Her body rises as you take a deep breath. âI mean I feel like something brought us together.âÂ
âWhat do you want to do about it?â you ask.Â
âI want to find out why. There must be a reason this happened, you know?â she says. A small yawn. âLike⌠There must be something waiting at the end of a journey we can take together to find out. Or something.âÂ
Together? A journey?Â
âThink it might be time for you to go to sleep,â you whisper. Her baby hairs stick to your face when you kiss her temple. The sheets are smooth and cool when you pull them up over Minjeongâs body and yours. She falls asleep quickly. You donât. Youâre thinking about IFR plans and what to say to her in the morning. Your fingers trace along the smooth skin of her hips and lower back for a while. The softness is comforting. And you fall asleep.Â
Is this part gonna go in the blog post?Â

luffy
luffy is an international relation major
all the professors love him and its defintely the only reason he's passing his classes
he has not one clue what going on (most of the time), head empty
also has really good finals grades
like its so surprising to see him pass with a low b high c average
he's really likeable, everyone and they momma wants to hang out with him
usally hanging out with sanji (bc he cooks) or zoro (caus he thinks he's cool)
he tutors with nami and robin sometimes (they're the only ones that can deal with him on the regular)
he's so silly and goofy i love him your honor
zoro
bussniess major but is never doing what he needs to do
classes? not in them. Homework? What's that? he is no where to be found and that should scare you.
he's somehow doing well in class and no one can figure out how he's doing it.
he's the captain of the fighting club (first rule of fight club? no talking about fight club) and he's good with members and running them
he hates the idea of hazing in his club and will kick you out if you try it
he has a special bond with one of the advisors given to him and he defends him like hell
he hangs around luffy bc he thinks of him as a little brother and wants to make sure he's alright
fights with sanji because he thinks its sooooo fucking funny
he's a regualar at the local bar to the point they don't even I.D him anymore they're just like "there's zoro."
sanji
definitely a food science major
he loves trying out new recipes and helping in the kitchen
sometimes when money gets low, he'll have a bake sale and they always do really fucking well
sometimes he'll take apprentenships for "fun" and so he's just racked up expirence in working in different places
his dream job is to have his own resturant where he can create his own dishes and not take any shit from anyone
also (because my sanji is a weed smoker not a cig user) will sometimes make weed pastries and they do so well when he sells them
would be outside on a smoke break but somehow never smells like weed its so crazy
would be the type of student to grumble and complain about homework but still do it anyway (he's just like me fr)
ussop
went to a shopworking trade school (his momma didn't want him to learn nothing after high school so she made him)
he found out later that he like working on different things and keeping himself busy
he also like gardening in his spare time
he's like really good at it and sometimes when his garden is too much for his family, he'll either give it to his neighbors or sell it in the farmer's market
his most frequent customer is sanji because sanji likes the freshest products avaliable
sanji askes him to hang out and try his recipes from time to time and eventually he makes friends with everyone
nami
earth sceiene major with minor in accounting
she is the the most ruthless student you'll ever meet
she don't take any shit from no one regardless of who you are, which is why she makes such a good tutor
she makes sure all her students get a good grade and because she tutors both zoro and luffy, she makes BANK
she also is the pretty girl on campus and all her friends pretty too !
hair done, lashes done, lashes done, face card don't decline, body tea !
she loves hanging out with the group but she'll never tell you that but everyone knows she cares about her people
she's lowkey scary
she isn't afriad to curse you the fuck out when you piss her off
fiercely loyal my girl nami is badddd
robin
history major with a minor in english
knows everything about everything and is one of the best tutors of the campus
she's kinda shy (mostly cause she doesn't like people but she's trying)
luffy thought she was cool and just kept bothering her until she reluctantly accepted
she's a real history buff and can debate her history like no one else
once got into it with zoro for a peice of random history
chopper
struggling medicene major
he looks stressed at all times and somehow is keeping a 4.0 gpa
luffy and zoro will come over with brusises and he just takes one look at him and sighs deeply
he helps in the nursing home with the doctors because he feels happy when people are treated
he doesn't like when people treat him or others differently so he's such a big advocate for anti discrimination against anyone
he likes helping people that most doctors would ignore and people hate him for that
he's not good at taking compliments so its funny to see him react to the compliments
he loves sweets and he loves when sanji makes them so he's always first in line at sanjis bake sale
he's so cute and small your honor
frankky
mechanic (trade school)
a literal grease monkey
he's always making something in his garage and
he makes custom peices for his friends and even sold some to some of the rich kids
besides that he's really cool about things
he's co chill about everything and help fix things whenever the crew needs it
all in all a cool dude
brook
old ass music head
he's one of the best musicains and he's so casual about it
he's a allumi for the school and he takes students every year to train them and teach them what he knows
he only takes like 5 students a year so the spots are very competative and very hard to get into
hes so chill otherwise
the type of mentor to call you out on your bullshit but still
extra little bonus scene!
the gang goes to Jinbe's resturant every week after all they're classes. Luffy had stumbled upon it one day and he just slowly started to get his friends to go their and that's just become their hangout spot since then. Jinbe pretends to hate when they come over but in all actuality, he loves talking to them and getting to know them as a group and as individuals. he loves their energy and will make sure they eat well and they're getting good grades.
no tag list for now but make sure you're supporting the people that are spending time making works for your entertainment !

Can I pls request a boyfriend hc for Mattsun? đĽşđ¤˛ one where itâs longterm like, highschool to waaaay into adulthood type of longterm.
⪠back to fics masterlist
mastukawa issei x f!reader
a/n: when i tell you i squealed reading this request âđ THANK YOU FOR REQUESTING ANON! AND YES BAE IâM WRITING THIS just a word of warning tho, iâve never written for mattsun before so i had to do a little research, hope i didnât mess up his character 𤧠anyway i hope u like this! and thanku for reading :)
cw: i may or may not have gotten carried away, f!reader, timeskip spoilers, established rls, tooth-rotting fluff
how you got together:
probably met him in your first year of high school, and got together after becoming really close friends
you made friends with hanamaki first because you were classmates, then one day he invited you to study together with his friends and that's when he introduced you to mattsun
you realised you shared a lot of classes with mattsun and you just clicked once you started talking
of course, you got acquainted with oikawa and iwaizumi as well
you had a group chat with makki and mattsun, and the latter often texted you after school and after practice
you had similar interests and music tastes and stuff (and of course enjoyed teasing oikawa together)
you and mattsun also started studying together (probably tutored each other in some subjects too)
the both of you started catching feelings as you grew closer and by the time you were halfway through your second year, the two of you had FATTEST crushes on each other bUT NEITHER OF YOU DID ANYTHING ABOUT IT AHJKDHSK i swear it pissed your friends off so much
anyway, makki and oikawa made a bet with mattsun in year 2, in which mattsun would have to confess to you if they didn't make it to nationals that year
iwaizumi told them to cut it out (they didn't listen)
oikawa knew mattsun wouldn't want to jeopardise his friendship with you by confessing, so he used that as an incentive for mattsun to train more LOL oikawa's actually evil
but they lost to shiratorizawa anyway so mattsun had to confess to you
he went to your class during lunch the very next day with a small bouquet of flowers and a note
he wanted to just leave it on your table and leave before anyone saw him, but you just HAD to walk in right at that moment
"what's that?" "...it's for makki" "then why is it on my table, issei?" "...because makki likes to sit at your table" "but makki's not even in this class"
anyway he ended up with the girl of his dreams that day and now he's secretly glad seijoh lost that game lol
you graduated together after dating for 1.5 years, and took a really beautiful grad photo together (he had the absolute biggest smile on his face, even makki had never seen him smile that wide before)
there was one photo with his friends in the background cheering as he bashfully gave you a kiss on your cheek (YOU GUYS ARE SO CUTE MY HEART IS ABOUT TO EXPLODE)
you also had a ton of photos photobombed by oikawa and makki in the background - and a few more taken when iwaizumi was dragging them out of the frame by their ears
dates with him:
he brought you out to dinner for your first date
he listened to oikawa's advice to take you to dinner because "girl's like the classics" and since oikawa was the only one in the team who had had a girlfriend before, mattsun decided that maybe he had a point
iwaizumi reminded him that oikawa got dumped his girlfriend but anyway-
it was a decent, slightly fancy restaurant in the city area and yes, he insisted on paying (he's been spoiling you from the very start)
he also got all dressed up for it - and i mean, suit, pants, flowers and everything
he was blushing the whole time
after that, you guys started going on different types of dates, depending on whether you're more of an extrovert or an introvert
dates include going on picnics, going to the arcade, movies, night markets and festivals, aquarium, museum, etc.
def a ton of home dates too - ordering food and doing skincare together or just cuddling
as broke highschool kids, you probably went to less expensive places, except for the occasional event, eg. after major exams, on you birthdays, your anniversary, after winning a game, etc.
lots of cheap after-school lunch dates though
milestones together:
you were each other's firsts, so you both lowkey didn't know what you were doing but you learned together
probably had your first major argument/conflict/disagreement after about half a year of dating? but you learned to resolve it in a healthy way pretty quickly
if you're not a confrontational person, then mattsun was probably the one who initiated the conversation after the argument
he probably cycled to your house in the evening just to apologise to you and talked things out
he can be a little blunt sometimes so resolving conflicts with him are usually very direct
after that, you slowly learned from each other's habits and signs and rarely get into heated arguments anymore because you know how to resolve conflicts peacefully through â¨communicationâ¨
it was a pretty important milestone when you first met each other's families/parents, which was about a few months after dating
your parents knew you guys were friends first but had never met him until you started dating
he's a pretty nonchalant guy but meeting your parents for the first time was probably one of the most nerve-wracking moments in his life (i think it's a universal experience)
they love him tho
if you have any really young siblings or cousins, they'd probably use him as a free climbing activity
he has an older sister and a younger brother and they absolutely ADORE you
like from the moment issei introduced you to them, they were like "ISSEI WE WANT THIS ONE"
moving in together during or after college
you guys were one of the cutest campus couples like your relationship was the PEAK of all college relationships
like EVERYBODY wanted a relationship like yours and mattsun's
the little things:
he looks like his love language is gift-giving, followed by quality time but that's just my opinion
so you can expect lots of little gifts from him
he also always initiates a lot of dates because he wants to spend time with you
walks you home every chance he gets
ALSO FLOWERS
in high school he'd pick flowers from the school garden and give them to you, he'd either visit your classroom during break or give it to you when he sees you in the hallway or even between classes
probably pissed off the school gardener once for picking too many flowers but they became good friends and now mattsun always gets fresh flowers for you
idk why but this man gives "he'd get you flowers every time he passes by a flower shop bc 'why not'" vibes
mattsun would 100% match outfits with you on a date "just for the aesthetic"
mattsun in a black turtle neck, jacket, a thin silver chain, more flowers, and a fancy restaurant for a date
he'd probably make a spotify playlist for you, either of songs that remind him of you or of songs that are special to both of you
he would carry your bag for you when you go out, even if you insist that it's not heavy, doesn't matter how feminine it is, he'd gladly carry it on one side while holding your hand on the other side
you send tiktoks to each other every day (and by that i mean A LOT of tiktoks) and he watches every single one that you send him and he always replies to them. either with an emoji or a short reply, he just wants you to know he enjoys your tiktoks
will send you every "send this to the prettiest girl you know" tiktok he comes across (which is also very often)
takes candid photos of you when you're not paying attention, probably has one as his lockscreen too
post-timeskip hcs:
you're close to the seijoh 4 and hang out with them almost every time they meet up
and since you're mattsun's +1 who's been around them since high school, you're invested in the other guys' love lives too
sometimes you and mattsun try to set them up with people for your own entertainment to help them out a lil
you and mattsun are like a package deal, if you're invited to something, he's coming with and vice versa
you and mattsun would probably ditch an event together once you're tired or sick of it
you probably saved all the dried petals from all the flowers he's given to you over the years and got your wedding guests to throw them as you walked down the aisle together (you saw someone do this on tiktok and when you told him after the ceremony he actually cried)
if you guys own a car, you would probably take turns driving the car every day and drop off / pick up the other from work
if you don't then you'd meet at a bus or train station nearby and head home together every day
the two of you would 100% take naps on the bus or train together with earphones in
since he works in a funeral home, i feel like he'd have tons of flowers at his workplace, so sometimes he'll take a few home for you
either that or he knows the best flower shops in town and he'll often pick up a bouquet on the way home
also tells you stories from his work
a/n: ok i'm out of brain juice for this one but i hope you liked it! i hope i didn't write him too ooc too đ

pairing : wriothesley x reader
genre: fluff
warnings : not proofread , french is used as a reference to the language of fontaine . i do not speak french so this is google translated .
a/n: google translate my love . I dont think this is my best work but-
requested by : @awn0ther
It was a sunny Wednesday afternoon when you and Wriothesley roamed around a local market , stopping occasionally to look at the goods being sold. Contrary to what the public thought , Wriothesley loved shopping with you , barely needing any persuasion to accompany you and insisting that he could hold the day's shopping .
He was also great to have around when talking to locals , French rolling off his tongue with ease as you tried to stop yourself from staring in awe . However , he caught you staring once, bringing it up once he was done talking to a Melusine stationed near the elevator . As you both passed by a park , he brought it up " I saw you staring , my love..is there something bothering you?" , you looked up to see genuine concern on his face. " Oh , nothing i just..." you paused for a moment " well i want to learn french" . He hummed in response " Well lucky for you , i am proficient" he boasted , the tone of his voice laced with slight laughter.
A week later , you'd assumed he had forgotten the encounter. You definitely hadn't expected him to sit you down with a stack of school level French notebooks , claiming to be your self proclaimed tutor . " Im a tough master though i warn you " he said , wagging his finger in your face , you slapped his hand aside jokingly , " We'll see about that" .
You had always been a fast learner , but trying to concentrate with Wriothesley so (SO) close to you was a feat you could not manage . Eventually , after 2 hours of struggling you huffed in defeat , leaning back in your chair . He laughed heartily , " Beat already? Thats fine we'll try again tomorrow."
Another sunny Wednesday , another local market . This time you both were stationed at a grocery merchant . As you tried to ask him about the price of the apples , you stuttered out the question in in broken french , " combien pour les ..." you paused , looking up at Wriothesley and holding the apple to his face to enquire about the word. He was grinning when he said " pommes...combien pour les pommes". " po...mmes?" You enquired , trying to figure out how to pronouce the foreign word . He nodded , his grin growing indefinately at your attempts . how cute.
Later on your walk home he brought up the topic again , " You've been learning well , could it be thanks to the wonderful teacher you have?"
thank you!

Pride proceeds the fall⌠yeah Dragon and Crocodile are good dads. But maaaybe a little unprepared when they have a super secure non-ambitious kid. Dragon made damned sure his kids (once he is actually the one doing the parenting) know they donât need to impress him. And Crocodile, with his pride and maybe IRONICALLY a bit more eager than Dragon to decide that some of his earlier struggles were material circumstances/other people (he did nothing wrong in transitioning it was everyone elseâs problem, etc.) is eager to use his own wealth and connections to set his kids up for success, and to take them *seriously*.
The kid likes chess? Baba will get whatever paperwork done to get that kid in the junior leagues. None of HIS kids will be unrecognized for ANYTHING they can do, wonât be passed over in ANY judgement. Not the dad pressuring the kid to be a scholarship professional athlete, the dad who makes sure his kids are always on the team or in the league that gets looked at for professional development opportunities. If his little girl is doing engineer-level math he is making SURE she is getting that recognition and education.
âŚwhich eventually leads them to having at least one adult child who is perfectly content with everything theyâve already accomplished and donât particularly see a need to improve or seek out *new* accomplishments. They were X champion 3 years in a row, and Y champion 2 times and won 4 awards in Z. Thats enough for them. Theyre as good at X, Y, and Z as theyre really interested in working to be. Retiring at 20 sounds pretty good to them.
Crocodile and Dragon are at an absolute loss. Totally blindsided. Their kid has their whole life ahead of them and theyâve declared their intention to do NOTHING.
Hahaha, Luffy after he becomes pirate king ;3
What you suggest sounds like it could happen in a modern AU setting though I suppose some of the things might exist in a canon compliant world as well.
I do like to imagine that Crocodile is trying to make sure that his kids have the best cards in life for whatever they want to achieve. He'll get them to school, he'll react to every interest a kid exhibits (if Luffy said "I want to play the violin" you can bet he'd get the best violin on the market and the best tutor shipped in to Goa only for the violin to end up in a dusty corner because Luffy wants to dig around in the garden instead). And if the kids want to set out to sea he'd offer to buy a ship, hire a crew, bribe whoever marine to look the other way, etc. *lol*
Not that Luffy would accept something like that...

Naomi Kritzer's "Liberty's Daughter"
Tomorrow (November 22), I'll be joined by Vass Bednar at the Toronto Metro Reference Library for a talk about my new novel, The Lost Cause, a preapocalyptic tale of hope in the climate emergency.
There's so much sf about "competent men" running their families with entrepreneurial zeal, clarity of vision and a firm confident hand. But there's precious little fiction about how much being raised by a Heinlein dad would suuuck. But it would, and in Naomi Kritzer's Liberty's Daughter, we get a peek inside the nightmare:
https://fairwoodpress.com/store/p148/LIBERTY%27S_DAUGHTER.html
Beck Garrison is a seasteader, living on a floating platform built by libertarian cranks to get away from big government, taxes, and the idea that people owe each other care and consideration. Various kinds of market trufans have built their own fiefdoms: there's a sin city, a biotech free-for-all, a lawless Mad Max zone, and so on.
Beck's father, Paul, is some kind of local functionary. He's wealthy and respected, both a power-broker and a power in his own right. He pays for Beck to get private tutoring (no public schools â no public anything) and if she needs bailing out from some kind of sticky situation, he's got her on his account with Alpha Dogs, the toughest mercenaries on the sea (no police, either). An armed society is a polite society, after all.
Beck has a job, naturally (there ain't no such thing as a free lunch). She's a finder: for all that the steaders worship commerce as a sacrament consecrated to the holy Invisible Hand, there's not a lot of retail at sea. California â the nearest onshore neighbor â has lots of pesky taxes, and besides, it's a long ways off. Besides, space is at a premium on the stead, so people don't have attics and basements to fill with excess consumer junk.
Instead, when a steader needs something â a shoelace, a fashion accessory, or any other creature comfort â they hire a finder like Beck to clamber around between the decks of the aircraft carriers, scows, yachts and other vessels comprising the stead. It's a good way for Beck to earn spending money, and she's a natural at it. After all, she's been a steader since she was four, when her mother died in a drunk driving accident and her father took her to sea.
The story opens with a finding job. Beck wants a pair of sparkly shoes for her client, and the woman who owns them is an indentured servant whose sister has gone missing. Find the sister, get the shoes.
Indentured servant? Yeah, of course. Freedom of contract is the one freedom from which all the others flow, so you can sell yourself into bond labor. Hell, maybe you can earn enough to buy a share in the stead and become a co-owner/citizen.
This is the setup for Beck's adventure, which sees her liberating bond slaves tricked into fatal work details, getting involved in reality TV production, meeting illegal IWW organizers, and becoming embroiled in a pandemic that threatens the lives of all the steaders. It's a coming of age novel, told with the same straightforward, spunky zeal of Heinlein's juvies, but from the perspective of the daughter, not the dad.
Kritzer makes it clear that growing up under the thumb of a TANSTAAFL-worshipping, self-regarding, wealthy autocrat who worships selfishness as the necessary precondition for market clearing would be a goddamned nightmare. She also thinks through some of the important implications of life in one of these offshore libertarian archipelagos, like the fact that the wealthy residents would be overwhelming drawn from the ranks of corporate criminals and tax-cheats, and the underclass would be bail-skipping proles ensnared in the War on Drugs.
But Liberty's Daughter isn't a hymn to big government. Most of the steaders are escaping the US government, a state whose authoritarian and cruel proclivities are well-documented. Kritzer uses the labor dispute at the core of the novel to reveal market authoritarianism â the coercive power that hunger and poverty transfers from the have-nots to the haves. Think of Anatole France's wry observation that "the law, in its majestic equality, equally forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread."
If you're familiar with Kritzer's work, you won't be surprised to learn that she tells a zippy, fast moving tale that smuggles in sharp observations about the cleavage lines between solidarity and selfishness. Her story "So Much Cooking" â published years before the pandemic â captured life under lockdown with eerie prescience:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/04/17/pack-of-knaves/#so-much-cooking
More recently, her "Better Living Through Algorithms" is a dazzling display of knifework that'll cut you a dozen times before you even notice that you're bleeding:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/02/wunderkammer/#jubillee
If you habitually read Kritzer's short fiction, Liberty's Daughter might be familiar to you, as it is adapted from a series of stories that originally ran in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Kritzer's YA debut, Catfishing on the CatNet, was also adapted from a short story, "Cat Pictures Please," which won the Hugo Award in 2016:
https://boingboing.net/2019/11/19/setec-astronomy-kitteh.html
"Libertarian exit" â buying a country, or an archipelago, or just a luxury bunker â has been in the air lately. It's a major element of my new novel, The Lost Cause, which came out this month â anarchocapitalist wreckers try to sabotage the Green New Deal from the seastead they've moored to the tallest point in the drowned Grand Caymans and declared to be a sovereign nation:
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865939/the-lost-cause
Kritzer is great at catching that zeitgeist. Seasteading is part of a long, bitter dream of a certain kind of selfish person to escape society, a tale told in lurid and fascinating detail in Raymond Craib's 2022 history Adventure Capitalism:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/06/14/this-way-to-the-egress/#terra-nullius
There's a longstanding joke to the effect that you can shut down any discussion of the merits of a libertarian exit by asking three questions about the brave new world:
Whether you can sell your organs;
Whether you can sell yourself into slavery; and
Whether there is any age of consent.
Kritzer tackles the first two, but tacks around the third. Instead, by giving us a young adult protagonist who has been raised in a rusting libertopia, she finds a decidedly less incendiary way to think about the role of autonomy in adolescents, and thus generates far more light than heat.
The result is a cracking read with a sting in its tail.
If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
