When you go on expeditions, how do you locate frogs, especially small ones? Do you go looking in specific habitats with specific species in mind? Do you use traps?

We use a combination of methods:

Hear frog? Search for frog.

Walk — frog hop from under foot — dive to catch frog!

Target — habitat look good for frog? Investigate!

Trap — Step 1. dig holes in ground, put bucket in, and stretch plastic sheet between. Step 2. frog walks or jumps into plastic sheet, then moves along it and falls into bucket. Step 3. Profit

That's basically it. It sounds simple, but experience makes a huge difference, both in what kinds of frogs you find, and how good a job you do at catching the buggers.

Wahh I think Fresh is pretty unsettling for Dream most of the time, so if Fresh every felt real happyness he'd be pretty jazzed!

On the flip-side, I think it would super freak Fresh out to have someone tell him/acknowledge that he's feeling something positive. His perception of himself is so heavily based on the fact that he's like... some strange freaky creature that can't feel positive emotions and is sooo scary that even if he did feel happiness, I don't think he'd admit that, even to himself. To have Dream point it out, too scary to deal with!

No, it's a good point! There is the fact that Blacknose is surrounded by many willing cats who can care for her (Redstar, Pinewing, Slugpelt, Daffodilcloud, the four now-adult kittens, Cormorantleaf), along with her primary caretaker Egrettail. But there is a very real question of balancing your own life with the responsibility you feel to your parents in their decline.

I don't think it's too far outside of Plumstripe and Beeface's characters to prioritize themselves over trying to care for Blacknose. And Plumstripe is especially trying to pay attention to Daffodilcloud's wishes - "I never want to see you again and I don't want to live with you." I'm not trying to present the sisters as perfect, noble characters - rather as two siblings with a terrible relationship who are trying to fix things between themselves first and foremost. They're still quite young, after all, and they might make different decisions in the future.

Seriously speaking, how do you feel about that specific aspect of Clark's characterization?

I think he and Bruce have more in common than he realizes, yeah. Both of them had to reckon with a child they didn’t know about. And for both of them, that child wasn’t a baby — Kon and Damian were both older! Already well on their way to being full adults.

But where they diverge is how they step up. I think it was easier for Bruce in many ways, in that he already had raised kids, already had that infrastructure in place both physically and mentally. And while learning so late about Damian was a betrayal by Talia in many ways, they coparent well from a distance — Damian isn’t caught between them often. They are civil. They both want what’s best for him.

Kon is a slightly different story. He was older, his other dad is Lex Luthor and that relationship is absolutely antagonistic. It’s not a betrayal simply because Clark at no point trusted Lex at all. And despite having the ability to do so…he does not react well, in most canon instances, to Kon’s initial appearance. He panics, he rejects him, and he cannot move past the fact that it happened at all. (Again, depends on the canon). Sometimes he recovers, sometimes it takes a while.

But yeah your point about Bruce above is absolutely spot on — it doesn’t matter how it happened, Clark. It just matters that it did. There’s now a kid depending on you. Like it or not. They’re blameless, too — they had no say in the matter either!

I’ve always wanted to write a fic where Bruce talks Clark through that — validates his hurt and still doesn’t allow his best friend to reject an innocent child. But he also lets Clark be human (heh), be vulnerable, be emotional in a space far away from Kon, because that’s important too. He needs to process in order to step up. Bruce had Alfred, and Dick, and other people to help him when Damian popped up. So Clark needs someone too. Expecting him to suck it up and be 100% perfect and accepting about Kon with 0 hesitation isn’t healthy either.
