in case you need to hear this
workout because its good for your heart, lungs, releases endorphins, and you want to get stronger. not because it’ll make you skinny or make your body look a certain way.
wear sunscreen every day in order to protect yourself from easily preventable and deadly skin cancer, not with the goal of preventing aging (there is nothing wrong with aging or wrinkles; it is a natural part of life and reflection of the life you live).
eat more vegetables because you need the fiber to make you more regular, they help lower your risk of eye and digestive problems, and they help in nutrient re-uptake. not because eating only carbs is “bad” for you. you need a combination of carbs, fruit/veg, protein, fiber, fat, etc for a full balanced diet.
cut out dairy from your diet if it makes you shit your brains out every single time without fail, not because it will “make you fat”.
drink more water because, despite how annoying it is to be told “just drink water”, it does actually make you feel better if you’re anxious or your head hurts or you don’t have any energy. not because it’ll “flush out your immune system uwu” or it will make your skin clear.
drink green tea because its delicious, not because it’s a “natural detox”. ( “detoxes” aren’t real. your kidneys detoxify your blood for you)
not everything “natural” is automatically healthy for you. not everything “unnatural” is automatically unhealthy/dangerous
cutting out whole food groups and labeling them as “bad for you” in any form is restrictive. if you aren’t allergic to gluten, you don’t need to cut gluten from your diet in order to be healthy. if you were not specifically instructed by a doctor to go keto in order to aid treatment for a disease (such as cancer or epilepsy), you do not and should not go keto.
do “healthy” things because you deserve to live a long, healthy life. yes, you. your weight doesn’t matter and it has never mattered. you deserve to keep yourself safe.

The only thing I have to say about the autism support needs & masking discourse:
There are people who haven't been talked to like a baby by a stranger in real life, and it shows.

re: last post: i think some of you are conflating correlation with causation tbh. like there’s a lot of neurodivergent gifted kids but gifted kids are not inherently neurodivergent, its a different phenomenon

29/6 - valentino
Tumblr media
11/7 - marc
Tumblr media Tumblr media
both 'pecco doesn't have to prove that he earned those titles by beating the marc marquez' and 'pecco should embrace the challenge of testing himself against the marc marquez' are takes I fundamentally agree with, but of course there's still something fun about how it's basically mind games by proxy from these two. neither of them are wrong! but the contrast is still pleasing. it stems from their fundamentally oppositional relationships wrt pecco, where valentino functions as The Mentor and marc functions as The Rival. valentino is emphasising pecco's existing status in the sport by offering a reminder of the world championships he already has, in order to minimise the importance of next year's battle and the pressure on his protege. marc is emphasising the status imbalance between himself and pecco by offering a reminder of how marc has more titles than pecco, in order to heighten the importance of next year's battle and increase the pressure on his rival. the two statements end up mirroring each other quite nicely, right?
you see it in how valentino positions the battle as something that's been hyped as the press, as something that's more illusory than 'real', versus marc implicitly challenging pecco by saying pecco should surely be seeking to challenge him. valentino will not go so far as to suggest pecco will beat marc - all he's saying is the outcome does not reflect on the fact that pecco WAS already the strongest (past tense). valentino's removed from the action, he can't make any promises on behalf of another rider, he deliberately refrains from placing more pressure on pecco by engaging in any way with his chances of winning next year... whereas marc very much argue his own case, saying that he believes he will win at least one more title (which would most likely involve beating pecco). valentino says pecco doesn't need this challenge, whereas marc suggests pecco should want it. and more than that - what marc is saying the challenge isn't just facing marc on the same bike, it's the fact that pecco's team decided to put him there. that they invited marc into pecco's house. marc speaks of all that pecco has to lose, while valentino speaks of all that pecco cannot have taken away from him
I don't want to read too much into the phrasing here since I'm aware the translation may be imperfect... but valentino both explicitly ("he will have a very uncomfortable teammate") AND implicitly "[pecco] has everything he needs to keep up with [marc]") acknowledges just how big a challenge this will be. uncomfortable - not just because marc is hard to beat but because he is a bastard of a teammate. keep up - not even beat, because just matching marc isn't going to be easy. and marc isn't being shy either about how hard defeating him will be for pecco, pointing out they will be on equal machinery for the first time, that marc still has more titles, that pecco still hasn't shown he has what it takes to match marc under those circumstnaces. still, marc is coming for pecco because right now pecco's on top of the mountain - pecco is the one with the results, the momentum, the "mental stability" (jorge martin girl stand up)
I don't know. I'm really fond of how pecco has ended up being positioned between the two of them. pecco's unique narrative role is such that if anything, the marc/valentino axis is de-emphasised. it still matters, but it's very much the hypotenuse. this isn't just a continuation of an old feud, it's not just two legacies facing off or the title race or any of that - because it's pecco's legacy that's being litigated as much as anything else. pecco's primary objective is not protecting valentino's title count, and valentino's advisory role is centred around pecco's objectives rather than his own... his desires and hopes in that capacity are subservient to pecco's. marc isn't there primarily to match/overtake valentino, he's there to beat the current king in his own castle and to win titles for himself. they mirror each other and oppose each other... but ultimately, it's still pecco who currently sits at the centre of that triangle. he's the one who the other two are primarily focused on. quite a unique position, especially for a rider who has been so publicly wrestled with how he compares to those particular legends of the sport. quite the task ahead of him. quite the challenge

btw not to be a disabled poor piss baby but the way ppl (SPECIALLY americans) treat struggling to recall things deemed common sense that you learned in school/straight up not knowing them as some personal moral failure is fucking weird lmao.every education system has a problem w failing disabled kids that cant follow along typical learning by just letting them fall behind w zero ways to catch up n my country has an issue w teenagers dropping out to support their families so they dont starve to death so it just rlyyy doesnt sit right w me when ppl claim if you cant remember some random fuck middle school class fact youre an idiot that doesnt remember bc you dont want to.i dont know how to explain to you all if a CHILD is being failed by adults to be taught smth its literally not their fault specially when in nearly all cases its bc of outside factors (i mentioned disability n poverty here but lets not forget stuff like abused kids being unable to focus due to stress or bc they lack a safe environment to study at home, for example)
idk ig my point is not everyone had a great home life w a stable financial situation n zero genetic conditions that let them get head pats from adults for being good at memorizing books, n its weird af to want to be superior than ppl who didnt have those bc its literally not our fault that as CHILDREN we were failed by adults n nowadays only managed (at BEST scenario, remember lots of ppl nowadays still cant even read bc they didnt even get the chance to do elementary) to remember actual essential basics that let us get by n not high school physics trivia.also if all those things r suuuuch big common sense idk why yall want to feel better than us for knowing them, by your own reasoning theyre completely worthless knowledge everyone has, no point in showing off you know smth like that, but ig at the end of the day its all abt feeling special for having success handed to you in a silver plate compared to the losers not born as lucky

yoooo ok that last job turning out to be bullshit might actually be a blessing in disguise because I just landed an interview for an after school theater teacher gig that pays way better~ I went to theater camp every year from ages 12 to 17 and always loved the idea of being a counselor for a program like that, and did backstage / dramaturg work for a play at UCSB back in pre-pandemic 2020 so I might actually have a shot at this. Wish me luck!

been thinking abt it more and it is genuinely baffling how allergies aren't generally treated as disabilities... our little sister has a life threatening peanut and hazelnut allergy and seeing what she and our mom have had to deal with is wild. it's such a simple thing. to keep people informed about the ingredients in the food they are eating and keeping classrooms and other spaces free from allergens that people in those spaces can't be around.

@heartofstanding tagged me in this meme months ago and unfortunately it took me this long to get to it because I had a mild crisis over how long it's been since I've read a novel, let alone one that I loved 😅 so this is nine of my favourite novels (not books, because if I included manga/short stories/comics/etc this would be giant)
Tumblr media
0The Picture of Dorian Gray -- Oscar Wilde// Pyrrhus-- Mark Merlis//The Scarecrow--Ronald Hugh Morrieson//Unnatural History--Kate Osman//Tunnels of Blood--Darren Shan//The Coffin Dancer--Jeffery Deaver//Hero--Perry Moore//Frankenstein--Mary Shelley//One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest-- Ken Kasey
#TPODG I feel like is obvious. But a genuinely hilarious book that is also poignant and tragic and so /so/ compelling#The more work you put into it the more you get out of it and I get so sad every time I see people#not wanting to look deeper than what's beyond the surface#Pyrrhus gets the extremely high honour of Greek Myth Retelling That is Actually Good#it's less about the Trojan War and more about the journey there set in the 1980s gay scene#the cursed spot that gets Philoctetes abandoned is an effective allegory right until the moment it isn't an allegory at all#and you should see the gut punch coming but somehow you don't#The Scarecrow is my Token Kiwi Representation and it's also the one that got me into the genre I now write almost exclusively#reading it feels like watching a cheesy low budget slasher that accidentally says some really interesting things about sexism and misogyny#(I say accidentally because it is the 20s and my tutor very loudly hated this book for being sexist)#(and I both totally agree and disagree because Prue is the prototypical final girl and needs an adaptation that does her justice)#Also the story of this novel's publication is freaking hilarious and why I will only write under a pseudonym because I would be next#Unnatural History is an exact blueprint of what I love about sci-fi done well in the way we've only very recently started to see on screen#and I hate that the show of Doctor Who rarely if ever reaches this level#Tunnels of Blood is my favourite of the Darren Shan Saga but really is just a stand in for the entire series#yes it's a kids series but it's a kid series that got me into horror and surrealism#and delivers the most effective and heartbreaking plot twist that not even Hannibal pulled off as well#The Coffin Dancer is just some damn good crime fiction and I wish Jeffery Deaver wasn't so slept on#(yes I know The Bone Collector got an adaptation but The Bone Collector isn't even in the top ten of the Lincoln Rhyme series)#unfortunately Deaver's strongest point is his use of point of view#but he still manages to get the twist to be shocking (and Coffin Dancer is the best example of it) in a way that other media fails at#Hero is about a gay disabled teen with superpowers and somehow tumblr does not know about it#It is such a fun riff on superheroes while also being genuinely sweet and touching and sad#It was meant to get a tv show but the writer passed so it got stuck in production hell :(#Frankenstein is Frankenstein. It's just good on like every level. Victor is my problematic fave. I will take no criticism.#I am however on my knees hoping the Guillermo Del Toro adaptation finally gets it right#one flew over the cuckoo's nest means so much to me but no one ever talks about it beyond the Ratched and Mcmurphy stuff#who are the least interesting characters to me. And I find the debate about the sexism ignores that the novel is about the structural abuse#of the mentally ill

So understandably we're back to talking about the quality of the Seine again. (The Paralympics are on now, with competition having started just today!!)
So hear me out: swimming in open water is literally part of the sport. They... have to have done worse than this, right? When I was watching the Olympic marathon swim (open water, in the Seine), the commentators were talking for a while about how yeah this is pretty decent really, a lot of these athletes (read: ones who are primarily marathon swimmers rather than primarily/exclusively pool swimmers who were like "fuck it, why not") have swum marathons in worse just this year.
And now like people are going "oh no, not the Seine again, protect the poor Paralympians!" which like FIRST of all somehow the language being used is rubbing me the wrong way SO hard (it's giving "Paralympians are delicate and must be coddled" which... holy shit do you actually KNOW any Paralympians?? I do, actually! She could lay me or just about any one of my able-bodied friends flat if she wanted to. That might even include my Olympian friend lmao.)
...and SECOND of all... these are triathletes. Like, they see the same conditions (water, air, all of it) as triathletes who aren't part of para-sport. They chose this sport. Not only that, they chose this sport so hard that they're the best in the whole world at this sport! They're full-grown adults making their own decisions regarding their health and their sport! Respect those decisions and stop treating them like they don't know what's going on! They do!
Now none of this is to say that the people working on the Seine should at any point here stop absolutely busting their asses in trying to ensure that the river is as safe and clean as possible (I will be fucking furious if they stop!). But the reasons they absolutely should keep on that are a hell of a lot more complex than, clutches pearls "but think of the wee children Paralympians!"
#debating tagging this properly but I'm just thinking out loud tbh#I didn't say this in the main body of text because on some level it kind of isn't the point but#8 of... 237 total athletes (if I did my maths right) got sick after swimming in the Seine#now that number includes some people twice because some people were in two events where they swam in the Seine#therefore if someone was exposed to the river water twice they were counted twice#that's about 3.3% of athletes who got sick after swimming in the Seine#which doesn't SOUND very high?? but the problem is I don't know how to come about statistics of say...#how many athletes got sick after running the marathon? after swimming races in the pool? after gymnastics?#what exactly is the average rate of exposure to illness at a large event in (what for most people is) a foreign country with unfamiliar foo#and unfamiliar drinking water (which yes can be a thing)#(and it's also hard to prove that any of those illnesses actually correlate to the swimming; just to - lol - muddy the waters further)#regarding my friends: I'm not naming any names because neither of them are open-water swimmers and I'm not dragging them into this#especially my Paralympian friend who (as you might imagine) has yet to compete this Paralympics!#I'm still just so mad about the tone of the conversation tbh#“these whole-ass disabled adults are babby and must be protecc” like... ugghhhhhhhhh#this post took me like an hour and a half to write son of a bitch#oh fuck it#paralympics

When people simply give the response of "why woldnt you just use magic to stop making them disable" when the argument of disable people in fantasy settings is brought up always fail to ever explain why or how that would happend, wich is honestly what makes their argument so boring
Ok, all disabilities are cured, why?
Is it somehow illegal to be disable? Is there a reason they need everyone to be nondisable? Is the practice like a simple surgery or is it goverment mandatory?
How ethical is it? How is it done? What about invisible disabilities? What about ones that are created later on in life?
Does a person's class affect if/when/how they can get healed? Do lower class somehow get healed "worse"? Whos doing the healing? At what age would this "healing" be appropiate? Do people need to pay for it?
You can do whatever you want with your fantasy world but the awnser of just "Just bcs" is lazy and stupid, it adds so much dept when you analise how or why these things happend in your society and how does it affect it

People who have high support needs still deserve respect, agency and privacy. They shouldn’t be treated like children and even children shouldn’t be treated like high security prisoners.
