in case you need to hear this
workout because its good for your heart, lungs, releases endorphins, and you want to get stronger. not because it’ll make you skinny or make your body look a certain way.
wear sunscreen every day in order to protect yourself from easily preventable and deadly skin cancer, not with the goal of preventing aging (there is nothing wrong with aging or wrinkles; it is a natural part of life and reflection of the life you live).
eat more vegetables because you need the fiber to make you more regular, they help lower your risk of eye and digestive problems, and they help in nutrient re-uptake. not because eating only carbs is “bad” for you. you need a combination of carbs, fruit/veg, protein, fiber, fat, etc for a full balanced diet.
cut out dairy from your diet if it makes you shit your brains out every single time without fail, not because it will “make you fat”.
drink more water because, despite how annoying it is to be told “just drink water”, it does actually make you feel better if you’re anxious or your head hurts or you don’t have any energy. not because it’ll “flush out your immune system uwu” or it will make your skin clear.
drink green tea because its delicious, not because it’s a “natural detox”. ( “detoxes” aren’t real. your kidneys detoxify your blood for you)
not everything “natural” is automatically healthy for you. not everything “unnatural” is automatically unhealthy/dangerous
cutting out whole food groups and labeling them as “bad for you” in any form is restrictive. if you aren’t allergic to gluten, you don’t need to cut gluten from your diet in order to be healthy. if you were not specifically instructed by a doctor to go keto in order to aid treatment for a disease (such as cancer or epilepsy), you do not and should not go keto.
do “healthy” things because you deserve to live a long, healthy life. yes, you. your weight doesn’t matter and it has never mattered. you deserve to keep yourself safe.
#anti diet#anti diet culture#mental health#body neutrality#self care#self love#also note: this is not me saying that being physically healthy/without issue is the only thing a person needs to have value.#people who aren't healthy have value#disabled people have value#everyone has value regardless of their appearance/weight#thats the point#thoughts on diet culture while i am a bit high#listen to me im right

The leftism/anticapitalism leaving people's bodies the zeptosecond you imply that disabled people who aren't "productive" still matter in society and need to be treated like intrinsic equals who have a place in this world:
#disability#disability advocacy#described images#image description in alt#ableism#ableism tw#my full-time job is my disability and you're lucky that i am still 'productive' as-is#your boss doesn't care that you think you're superior for being hired by them. they're still going to treat you like profit machines#it astounds me how people will capitulate for oppression because they place their intrinsic value in their ability to be at the top...#...or at least 'at the top' compared to others. it's the same impulse that makes people think their cisgender status makes them superior...#...you are placing your worth into systems which not only oppress others but offer you no true sense of worth...#...ESPECIALLY if you're also being exploited (even if just a bit)...#...you have a job sure but... do you actually get treated like a human being? are you actually paid? are you actually safe?...#...if the answer to any of those questions and more is 'no' then why do you place your value in capitalistic production. genuinely.#and why would you DEMAND disabled people to have the same exploitation you experience. why do you DEMAND productivity if you are proletaria#yes being a leftist and anticapitalist are linked but. some people still internalize capitalism without questioning it#being a leftist is about challenging that rather than assuming you're correct i think#also scientists were very silly when describing time that's like. less than a millisecond i think

the other thing about being disabled in academia is everyone is like "yeah we can't do much about the buildings they're old :/" as if "old" being a synonym for "inaccessible" isn't just a constant reminder that the people who built the school did not imagine that someday someone like me might study there
#mod felix#obviously there's some stuff that's way more accessible with like. electricity. like. i can get to the second floor. for example#but like. it's still possible to have. for example. ramps. if you as a culture value disabled people and their work#i miss when i was at a school where 'these are old buildings' meant 'these buildings were built for cows instead of people'#rather than 'these buildings were built for students just not students like you'#and of course this is another one that applies to many marginalized groups and like. many groups more than disabled people#in the sense that like. my school was also built to explicitly exclude people of color. for example#but i speak from my own experience and my own experience is characterized by ableism more than anything else#but like . again if you read this and you're like 'this feels like it applies to me in ways unrelated to disability'#well it probably does.

Labor, on its own, has no inherent value. The willingness or ability to labor does not translate to virtue. It can confer financial value, since everyone should be compensated for their labor, but it absolutely does not have inherent moral value.
Disabled people are not obligated to perform for you. They are not required, morally, to break themselves in order to earn some sort of personal value and prove their "worth" to society. They do not need to exhaust every possible means of survival to warrant aid, or spend the entirety of their existence pursuing the same amount of production as others even though it takes everything they have and leaves no room for anything else. They are not obligated to push their limits.
If that pisses you off because YOU have to work to the limit, or beyond, your problem is that you are not being paid enough or you are being asked to do the work of more than one person. Not that disabled people get help for "nothing".
You deserve better, too, you lovable dingus! Every single thing that benefits disabled people will benefit you and the ones you love, either immediately, or eventually. All of it!
#when i go into a care home my disability payments stop going to me and go to the care home except for the $50/month they will let me have#that's right!#so if you're temporarily abled maybe consider that a run of bad luck is all that separates you/your loved ones from this potential future!#you're fucked if you can't labor so it's time you accept that it isn't a virtue and people who can't still deserve support because buddy#i have news for you about human minds and bodies and their relationships to accidents and illnesses and time#and pal you aren't going to like it#get uncomfortable and get to work pushing for unions that might secure you benefits#and push for things that benefit adults who have never been able to work because that's just plain the right thing to do#like UBI and an end to income caps and savings limits for disabled people#and also extremely extremely low or no taxes for the self-employed#and universal health care#and biger SSI payments#stop seeing the value of your fellow human through the lens of exploitation#stop being the eyes of capitalism and be the hands that pull others up

pretentious cynical fucks that think solarpunk is an apolitical cozy pseudo-punk movement are so unimaginably stupid. like okay whatever go off and have ur glorious revolution. i'm gonna be here making community and planting a garden and dismantling systems of oppression brick by brick in the communities around me, building something new and beautiful in their place. maybe you should give it a shot.
#solarpunk#cripplepunk#as always i'm not anti-violence to the end but i believe we should all value people over destruction#you have your plans for the Revolution but have you spoken to your neighbors?#have you learned what crops are native to your area?#have you spoken with the indigenous people to the land you are living on?#do you know the history of that place you call home?#do you know how to live with the planet instead of using it like a tool?#do you know how to be kind?#do you treat disabled people with kindness and respect?#...or are disabled people on the margins of your ideals?#are we just a footnote? a 'this isn't about you' eye-roll follow up to a post about how Leftists Need To Work Out and Be Slim and Get Jacke#i have a lot of thoughts on this as you can maybe tell

still mad about how media illiterate people were when encanto came out
#“she should have gotten a gift” literally the whole point of the movie is that magical powers and gifts don’t define a person’s value#and is more often than not harmful#i also saw mirabel as a representative of disabled or neurodivergent people#we don’t just magically cure because we helped our family once#the point is that mirabel’s family especially her abuela needed to learn how to treat her better#also i kinda get why people are mad at abuela’s redemption but i really don’t think it was that bad#it was a good start imo#she apologized she took responsibility for her actions and started treating her family better#i like to think that not everyone forgave her they just gave her a second chance#encanto#encanto discourse

emailed my feminist disability studies professor to say "sorry i know that all the assignments from the second half of the semester are due tomorrow and i've already got extensions for all of them but also someone i love got incarcerated this week and three other people i love are in the hospital and one of my best friends just found out that all of her family were murdered in Gaza and we're all still grieving our comrade who was murdered in a transphobic hate crime five weeks ago and i think i might have a broken rib from a cop again and it's really hard to try to care about schoolwork when all my time is spent being in the streets and trying to make sure my loved ones can survive right now"
#personal#vent#murder tw#thinking that they will give me an extension they are one of my only cool professors#and they believe about putting disability justice values into action#i just cannot. i don't have it in me to do discussion posts and essays and tests right now#and i think out of any class i would hope someone teaching feminist disability studies would get it#feeling like right now i just need to keep going and keep going and keep going#thinking about anger and grief and love and what it means to love people enough to fight for them#thinking about how i don't want to let go of this anger

when talking about topics like maturity and (self-)infantilisation, it's important to remember that there will always be disabled adults for whom the "normal" benchmarks of adulthood are not attainable or even applicable at all. if you want to be an ally to disabled people, you need to support all of us, not just the ones you find palatable - and that includes people who have "childish" interests, who get very emotional about seemingly trivial things, who aren't able to be independent in the way that adults are expected to be. that doesn't mean that we "need to grow up", or that we're reverting to a childlike state to avoid our responsibilities, or whatever op-ed writers think is wrong with gen z these days. it's just the way we are, and liking plushies or struggling with certain tasks doesn't in fact make us children! disabled adults are still adults, and still deserving of dignity, regardless of whether or not we can live up to the rigid societal norms of what it means to be an adult.
#still kinda pissed off at that article thats going around atm#it made a few half-decent points but they were buried under a mountain of bullshit#if youre writing about how young adults deny themselves agency by engaging in childlike activities#and you dont acknowledge the way that disabled people are constantly infantilised by abled society just for existing#and often have limited agency to begin with because it was forcibly taken from us#and you dont even question the value of forcing a normative timeline of development onto the vast diversity of humanity#but instead uncritically use this questionable model to further contribute to the infantilisation of disabled people#by stigmatising ultimately harmless traits/behaviours and calling them childish#then you havent just missed the point - you were aiming in the opposite direction of the point from the start#disability#ableism#actually autistic#(by far not the only disability this applies to but the main one i was thinking of)#also wanna note that children should be allowed to have meaningful agency as well. if your definition of child is 'stupid and powerless'#then that's a problem in itself. but that's a whole other can of worms#even if children were treated better (and they should be!) disabled adults should still be seen as adults#because that's what we are

Regarding the whole "Fandom Is An Escape, so why should I have to care this much about misogyny/racism/ableism/transphobia/etc." thing. Idk about the rest of you, but it gets kind of hard for me to "escape" when I keep seeing people say the same vile things about characters who share aspects of my identity that I hear all the time in real life.
#gotta say: it doesn't make me feel any better getting ignored/disparaged on account of my gender irl and then seeing every fictional woman#also get ignored/disparaged when there is no material difference between her and popular male characters other than her gender#how do I escape from irl misogyny if y'all keep willfully ignoring and flinging gendered insults at 99% (<-lowball estimate) of#female characters? how do I put aside the ableism I face in real life when y'all discuss disabled/mentally ill characters in the most#absolutely out-of-pocket way? how do I forget about biphobia when the 'arguments' you make 'for fun' about bisexual characters#in fiction sound EXACTLY the same as the things people say about my bisexuality outside of the internet/fan culture?#and then obviously this gets compounded if you are trying to even simply EXIST in fandom as a poc or a trans person or an intersection of#any or all these varying identities/life experiences#like yes caring about fictional characters is not the same as caring about real people OBVIOUSLY I can't BELIEVE I have to keep clarifying#that. and at the same time!! because multiple things can be true at the same time!!!! engaging in behavior that enforces pre-ingrained#societal biases and prejudices!!!!!!!! does not help dismantle those biases and prejudices!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in a real-world way that DOES#involve caring about actual people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#it's also. interesting. when people go on & on about how some newest show about thin cis white (male) gays is So Important & Revolutionary#So We Must Do Everything To Keep It Relevant And Visible and then act this way about women/poc/trans people/disabled people/fat people#in media. so like. you DO agree that seeing a variety of life experiences represented in fiction is beneficial. you DO believe in the#value of depicting marginalized people. interesting that that only seems to apply to a VERY narrow and specific category of marginalization#(ugh remember when I talked about this and someone called me a straight person good times)

There’s a study going around rn about how ADHD may have evolved in order to help hunter gatherers collect more food without exhausting resources, and that’s an interesting theory! But I take umbrage with the scientists’ (and article’s) reasoning for why this theory was conceived of:
“This MUST be useful to us as a species, or else it would have evolved out by now.” (They literally said that.)
Like is it just me or is this an incredibly ableist way of viewing the world. Maybe I need to go touch grass or something, but it’s rubbing me the wrong way.
#and people do not have to be useful to have value#we got this far as a species because we value each other and take care of our injured and Ill members#civilization was founded when humans first healed a femurs fracture…#that disabled girl who was in so much pain but our ancestors kept feeding her dates.:.#stuff like that#I really hate this idea that ‘this trait MUST be useful’#my adhd is not useful#it destroys my life if unchecked#sorry if that is so hard for a neurotypical person to understand#it gives me nothing and holds me back from my desires and goals#I still have value though#it just sounds like they’re saying a better more evolved world is one where disabled people don’t exist#feels very….how do I put this…eugenicsy?

Dinner was a huge success, my mom LOVED it. Finally I got to boss her around by telling her to sit down and let me spoil HER for once without her trying to help <3333
It was extra fun cause I cooked her the signature family dish she developed when we were little but that I've developed further on my own since I moved out, and seeing how much she loved it really warmed my heart.
#also i always worry that what i cook is going to be inedible#despite the complete and utter lack of any negative feedback#and despite that even my super hard to phaze sibling and dad sing their praises#AND despite my gfs positive feedback in particular#i really enjoyed cooking and baking today though its so fun#its one of those things ive really come to enjoy ever since my health got worse#because its something i can still do at home that is also helpful to people i live with#who are inevitably going outside more than i am#idk i just finally understand why my mom loved waking up to make us breakfast growing up#she always says she valued being able to spend time with us and help us before leaving#(she was permanently disabled after a car accident involving a moose before i was born and could never work since)#and i feel that so hard now#i am rambling and tired but im so happy to have her let me return the gesture#idk what id do without her#silvi talks

Let me be absolutely clear -- the problems with Tumblr will keep getting worse if the disabled minority and the trans people and the people frothing at the mouth at the opportunity to yell at a transphobe, keep @’ing staff and the developers on this site, tell them to kys, because in the meanwhile the transphobes and racists and white supremacists will keep using the actual tools Tumblr provides for blocking and reporting, further poisoning the datasets used for moderation, and encouraging the idea that using the official tools does nothing to basically ensure the only statistically meaningful data available to Automattic is poisoned, poisoned all the way down, poisoned beyond usability.
Hatespeech and bias needs to be reported for it to be considered statstically significant to act on from a developer point of view. Suicide baiting and spamming any of the official means of communication will get you eliminated as a spammer, even if you’re peppering legitimate criticism within your ventpost about how you hate the new thing. You are playing the TE/RFs game.
#van stuff#the biggest reason we don't have an easily accessible 'report hatespeech' button is a) because people misused the old one#and b) because it's not satistically significant enough to be the first thing people want to report#this is like. COMMON fucking knowledge that moderation on Tumblr is 99% automated and extremely cheesable#and you now who are cheesing it? TRANSPHOBES!!!#Like this is not even a 'the developers won't care' kind of thing#this is a 'THE DEVELOPERS NEED HARD DATA TO JUSTIFY MAKING CHANGES'#if the ARE actively malicious then the data contradicting everything they're saying will FORCE changes#and if they mean what they say when they say they value the site for its vibrant culture#then giving them hard data to share with unconvinced people signing off on them having the budget to change things will ONLY help#the whole 'let's yell at staff every time anything happens' is a shibboleth#You're all being fucking exhausting#I want to quit Tumblr because if the userbase is gonna be like this!!!#If ALL I SEE for DAYS ON END is 'staff this' 'staff that'#that's JUST GIVING ME WORSE ANXIETY ABOUT THIS SITE GOING DOWN#'this change is bad for disabled users' YOUR NEEDLESS CONSTANT HOSTILITY AND PANIC RAISING IS ALSO BAD FOR ME A DISABLED USER#WHY DO I HAVE TO BE THE COLLATERAL DAMAGE???#'Oh staff could make so much money if they only listened to feedback' you fuckers DON'T LEAVE FEEDBACK THOUGH#you just @ Staff and think that that's statistically meaningful data they can use#Fuck's sake#And that's not counting all the times staff *did* implement changes we wanted for years... AND YOU ALL STILL COMPLAINED#WE MODDED TAG VIEWING IN FOR YEARS AND NOW WHEN IT'S OFFICIAL YOU FUCKERS DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO TURN IT OFF#Fucking EXHAUSTING the lot of you

Are we honestly really truly doing "stupid anarkiddies think they can literally make INSULIN in BATHTUBS!" discourse again. I love you all but so many of you are pulling strawmen of anarchists out of your asses that have never even come close to existing in real life
#'anarchists will literally say they think disabled people should just die lol' where. who are you talking about#why should i even pretend that you're being intellectually honest when you say shit like that#open mick night#i'm trying not to post about this bc i value my happiness but why do so many supposed 'communists' act like#literally all infrastructure would magically disappear after The Revolution#and that the only way to distribute medication without the iron fist of the state is interpersonally among close friends#'so you're saying RAPISTS and MURDERERS deserve to NOT HAVE INSULIN since NO ONE LIKES THEM?' why have you decided#completely within your own mind that anarchists' views of 'post-revolution' society#is like little bunny rabbits in fields of wildflowers bringing only their closest friends antipsychotics. why do i need to entertain that

People who use "get a job" as a comeback will suffer my wrath.
#grem stuff#i cant stand this stupid comeback#or whatever it's called when people do that#“get a hobby” is better#i dont wanna be a weirs “im trigger!” tiktok twitter perosn#but jobs arent essential to one's well being#its the opposite actually#jobs arent accessible to all#as a disabled perosn who cant have a job and will probably die homeless if something happens to my parents or if they kick me out#a hobby on the other hand#anything can be a hobby#grab a book#grab a piece of paper and pencil#grab a piece of old cloth#watch tv#genuinely its so accessible and it WILL make you happy and feel like worth living#jobs most of the time makes people miserable#ever since I've started staying at home and spend all my time for hobbies and well being i feel so healthy and so rested and not depressed#i know everyone's experience is unique and some people can't afford not having a job but its not about that#i just think a lot of people are completely brainwashed and see someone's value only at what's their job#and its mostly “youre unworthy for being jobless”#sorry to break it to you but not everyone can have a job cuz they're aren't accessible to all#rant

finally found a place to read With the Light online and i'm thrilled; if you haven't read this manga i do Legitimately recommend it
#N posts stuff#like don't get it wrong it Is Not a series about being autistic it Is a series about raising an autistic kid#but also don't be put off by that because it's legitimately a series that I feel Loves autistic people with its whole being#it's kind of a teaching manga so it showcases a lot of different opinions/characters/conflicts/etc. but the Framing is very consistent#in that the manga is Extremely of the opinion that autistic people are People who deserve to be Valued and Accepted As They Are#the onus for change is never put on autistic individuals the framing is basically Universal in the 'the World needs to change#to be more accepting' -- it's a very Social Model depiction of autism that ALSO never veers too far into the#'autism isn't even Really a disability' fallacy; it's very much a 'A lot of autistic people will need constant support in a variety of ways#throughout their lives but that isn't the roadblock preventing them from having their own lives; ableism in society is the roadblock'#the first two chapters are the hardest to get through bc they take place before Sachiko has any real understanding of autism and#so she's isolated and stressed out and the ignorance makes it difficult for her to care for Hikaru properly (there's also a lot of#other characters Blaming her for what's going on which goes unchallenged at this point though that changes later); but after she#understands what autism is she's Firmly in Hikaru's corner for the rest of the series - you can skip right to ch 3 without a problem#if you're not interested in reading about that initial conflict#there's still a Lot of conflict ofc but by then the chapters have some of my favorite moments so i don't want to advocate skipping#them; like Hikaru's daycare teacher explaining how Hikaru's difficulty speaking is the same as other kids' troubles with#things like jump-roping/etc.; and then a mother who has An Issue with Hikaru's presence in her daughter's class realizing the#depth of the problematic opinion bc Her mother (who had a stroke) faces similar ableism from her peers#i'm cutting this post off b4 the tags get Too long but if you're curious but still hesitant man. send me an ask and i will Happily#write an insanely long essay about how much i love this series; i have all the books i'm not excited about the online availability#for Me i'm excited bc i've been wanting to rec this manga for like almost a full decade and i can finally give you a link instead of#saying 'well. you can find used copies sometimes' lol

Looking around my house for things to block a hat on has once again led me to staring longingly at the Bone Clones website.
...look, I could buy a cheap mannequin head off Amazon, and that would probably work fine, but then I just have this MANNEQUIN HEAD in my house, and do you think I need that Stranger-ass shit in my life day to day? I do not.
A Shanidar 1 replica skull, meanwhile, is a totally reasonable $450, $500 with the stand, and also I think it would be very funny to block my knitwear using a replica Neanderthal skull that makes me cry with overwhelming affection for humanity when I look at him. IT'S A BARGAIN IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT!
#knitting#yarncraft#bones#anthropology#neanderthals#no I am not spending $500 on a replica skull#/sigh#I have to pay someone to remove my dogs' balls#and like... fix my toilet and shower...#but god I wish I could#I just want my ancient disabled buddy on my desk to remind me I have value to the people around me#and disabled people always have#and also from time to time he will help me make my yarn the right shape
