currently writing a fanfic where thalia reflects on taking zoe's place as lieutenant. and the zoe and thalia parallels in the original series are so strong. i mean. both of their deaths were caused by their fathers. both of their deaths end with them staring up at the sky. both of their deaths lead to them being a symbol of sacrifice and heroism. both of them joined the hunt because they lost faith in a boy they cared for. both of them were trapped between a rock and a hard place. how am i just now realizing this?
#i know that zeus didn't technically kill thalia#however#he was the first one to break the oath#thus dooming thalia to a life of torment#and in her dying moments#all he did was keep her on the brink of death#and essentially put her to work by acting as the token and border for camp half-blood#being the protection for demigods that he would never give her#and if i came back to life six years later and learned that#it would kill me#so#percy jackson and the olympians#pjo#pjo textposts#pjo parallels#thalia grace#zoe nightshade#the titan's curse#ttc#the titan's curse angst#thalia grace angst#zoe nightshade angst

headcanon!!
percy was looking for bianca for 14 hrs straight. everyone else gave up looking for here after around 3-ish hrs. they had to physically drag percy away from the wreck. when they finally did manage to get percy away from the wreck he passed out 30 seconds later. percys hands were also completely shredded and ripped. you could see the bones and muscles. there was blood all over them. he had bandages on his hands for at least three months afterwards. he does not remember any of this. he remembers looking for bianca longer than the others and he remembers his hands getting at least a bit injured. he does not know the extremes of either. his hand is covered in scars and stitches because of this.
zoe’s the one who stitched him up.

Imagine for a sec with me. One day, Annabeth dies while defending a bunch of mortal children from a monster and, for the sake of this what if story, Percy doesn’t lose his shit and attacks the gods. He realizes he’s gonna see her again one day so he continues on living. Fast forward about 5 years and Percy dies in a drunk car accident (I can see the irony) and he ends up in hades. He goes through judgment and gets sent to Elysium. He gets there and immediately starts to look for Annabeth. He sees all these familiar faces. Jason, Beckondorf, Silena, Zoe, Bianca, and so on but he doesn’t see his wise girl. He figures she must be in the Isle of the Bliss because of course Annabeth is and he walks over to Bianca to ask her if he can talk to her dad about just visiting the Isle to see Annabeth. Bianca looks him in the eyes and says she’s not here. Percy is like ya I know she’s not here that’s why I want to go and see if she’s on the Isle. Bianca shakes her head and says Percy, she’s not there either, she’s not here in the underworld. Percy just stares at her, confused and asks if there was a mix up and she’s actually in the fields of asphodel. Bianca starts to tear up as his friend starts to form a circle around him and says, I don’t know how, but Annabeth Chase’s soul never made it down here into the underworld. And that’s when it hits him, Annabeth died with her knife in her hands. He remembers Magnus telling him how people ended up in Valhalla. Percy falls to his knees and starts to wail uncontrollably as he realizes that he’ll never get to hold Annabeth, his Wise Girl, ever again.
Cut back to 5 years ago to when Annabeth first wakes up after death. She’s confused at first but quickly realizes where she is after someone tells her welcome to Hotel Valhalla. It doesn’t bother her at first, thinking that with Percy’s luck, he’ll die like she did so she waits. She waits in the lobby for decades until one day, Magnus sits beside her and gently tells her that it's been over a century and that Percy wasn’t coming. Magnus looks over at her and sees the silent tears streaming down her face. Deep down, she’s known for a while but didn’t want to believe it. Magnus holds her as she cries louder into his shoulders, all the while, Annabeth is wondering to herself how can the fates be so cruel?

Nico is a Baby, Bianca is Alive (ft. Thalia)
Stargazing:
Nico: How about that one?
Thalia: Well, that one is the Cassiopeia. See how it's shaped like the letter W?
Nico: Oooh, look! That's the Big Dipper and the Small Dipper.
Bianca: Yeah. They are. Good eyes, Nico
Nico: What's that one?
Bianca:
Thalia: ... *looks at Bianca*
Bianca: That...is Zoë.
Nico: Like Bia and Thalia's friend!
Thalia: Yeah.
Nico: How come I never see Zoë anymore?
Bianca: She's uh...
Thalia: She went somewhere where she's really happy.
Nico: Really?
Thalia: Yeah.
Nico: Will I ever get to see her again?
Thalia: *looks at Bianca*
Bianca: No, Nico. She can't visit anymore.
Nico: Aww. I never got to say thank you
Thalia: Why did you want to say thank you?
Nico: Cuz she lets me see Bianca and Thalia even if they're Hunters of Artemis already. She takes care of you and protects you.
Thalia:
Bianca: Sorry, Nico. She can't come visit anymore.
Nico: Don't you miss her?
Bianca: Of course we do. Everyday.
Nico: So, why can't we just go to her instead?
Bianca:
Thalia: It doesn't work like that, Nico.
Nico: Well...why not?
Thalia: It's just not. She's... She's happy where she is.
Nico: Oh...
Bianca: *deep breath* Alright. Time for bed.
Nico: Awww :(
Bianca: C'mon. We can go again tomorrow night.

Bianca, sitting on the roof of the Hades Cabin:
Thalia, finding her: Hey.
Bianca: Hi
Thalia: Thought I might find you here. *sits next to her* What'cha doing?
Bianca: *looks up at the stars* Just talking.
Thalia: *pulls her close to a hug* I miss her, too.

Scars - Chapter 8
Chapter 8 - What’s Done on the Island, Stays on the Island
Calypso shivered when she got out of the airport in the Upper East Side of New York City. She pulled her coat closer to her body, zipping the zipper up to her chin.
Winter in New York was extremely chilly, much colder than Calypso was used to, having lived in the Bahamas for all her life up till that point.
She shivered once again, but not from the cold. The mention of her old home in California brought back unwanted memories to Calypso. She never wanted to go back there ever again. The last thing Calypso needed was to make a bad impression on the people at her new high school by having random meltdowns in the middle of math class.
Dragging along her small suitcase with her few belongings, Calypso made her way through the throng of people at the airport's entrance. Making her way to the help center a couple of streets down.
Her feet crunched in the snow as hauled herself and her baggage down the busy streets of the city. It was so much more… crowded here. Everywhere Calypso turned, there seemed to be hundreds of people around. The honking cabs and blinding lights of screens set up all around didn’t help to ease her sensitive ears.
Calypso stopped in front of the airport help center’s door and took in a deep breath, accidentally inhaling some flakes of snow. It was a pristine, little building, with a poster of “Hamilton” the musical plastered on the window.
Calypso smiled, she had always loved Broadway musicals, especially ones like Hamilton. They were crafted with such care, had good meanings, and were fun to just get down and dance to. She could still remember her excited 8th-grade self, jumping up and down, ready for high school. Their middle school didn’t have a Performing Arts Theatre, so she was ready to try out for the first musical that was announced in high school.
That never happened. Not after that “episode”.
Before she got pulled into the memories of her early past, she heard a voice next to her, and almost jumped out of her skin with surprise.
“Excuse me?” said the voice.
Calypso turned to look at the owner of the voice. It was a woman, maybe in her thirties. She was very beautiful, with light brown, blemish-free skin, chocolate brown eyes, and silky black hair done in a braid. The woman, Calypso noticed, also looked rather eccentric. She had on purple glasses, a tye-dye shirt, and brown knee-length shorts (which Calypso found crazy because of how cold it was, but that could just be her).
When the woman realized that she caught Calypso’s attention, she smiled warmly.
“I was just asking if you wanted to come inside, honey,” she said, “You seemed pretty cold out here. Poor thing, you’re shivering!”
Calypso looked at her body and recognized that yes, she was, in fact, shivering, and the woman ushered her inside. She instantly felt a rush of heat when she entered, and her nose hit the nice aroma of hot cocoa. Her stomach grumbled.
“Oh, are you hungry? You must be, after that long flight!”
Calypso looked up, alarmed. How did this woman know she came on a flight?
The lady seemed to see Calypso’s shocked expression and amended herself, “I’m sorry for that, I just noticed your tan, which barely anyone who lives in NYC gets, so you must be from somewhere hot. Also, you have a suitcase honey, which means you either took the train, boat, or plane. But you look jet-lagged as well, so you must’ve taken the plane.”
Calypso’s jaw dropped. She was good.
The black-haired woman smiled sheepishly and then smacked her forehead.
“Oh dear me, I can’t believe my manners! My name is Iris, I run this center.” she said, spreading her arms out, “May I know your name, young lady?”
Now, Calypso had heard stories about people in New York and what they do to young children out on the streets. But this woman, Iris, was just so warm and likable that she couldn’t help it.
“Calypso Atlas,” she responded, flinching slightly at her last name.
From behind the counter, Iris procured one hot cocoa and a cookie and handed them to Calypso. Thanking her, she sipped on the hot drink, feeling warmth course through her body.
They talked for a bit, and Calypso told Iris that she was waiting for her new foster parents, who were supposed to take care of her.
She was told by the agency to wait here until her new family came to collect her. Calypso was supposed to wait until the… Borgerdors? No, Bancondorms?
No, no, that wasn’t it. It was the… Beckendorf’s! Yes, the Beckendorf’s.
Calypso was supposed to wait until the Beckendorf’s came to take her to live with them. Oh, how she hoped they weren’t like her old foster family, always leaving her alone to go to some adults-only party or a bar or something like that.
That’s why she ran from them. That, and she couldn’t bear to stay there with the memories on every street, everywhere she turned. The agency sent her to this couple in New York, saying they were “more than worthy of the job”.
Well, Calypso would be the judge of that.
“So, where can I sit while waiting for them?” she asked.
Iris pointed to a corner with a bunch of soft, plushy looking sofas and pillows. There was a boy sleeping on a sofa there already.
“Clovis,” Iris said in a threatening tone, “No sleeping, you have a job to do.”
Clovis turned his head around and muttered something that sounded vaguely like ‘five more minutes’.
Calypso sunk down into one of the sofas and took out her phone, scrolling through her camera roll. She went from recent to oldest. Most of the pictures contained only her, maybe a few of her old friends. But then she stopped on a picture of her and another girl.
She was a year older than Calypso, with black hair in a braid and princess-like features. And in the picture, she had her tongue sticking out and one eye closed.
Zoë. Her sister.
Before she could stop herself, Calypso started scrolling deeper and deeper into her past, and slowly she found she wasn’t in the real world anymore.
~~~~~~~~~~
Calypso and Zoë had just come back from the mall. They didn’t buy anything but just dawdled around the stores. Pointing out things that were too expensive for something so unimpressive.
The eerie silence of the house made their laughter dissipate, and they stared around the kitchen in confusion. It was dark and seemed empty, but their father should have been home by now.
“Zoë, where is-” was all the Calypso managed to get out before she heard a peculiar noise.
It was a sound that she only heard a couple of times, in action movies: The safety of a gun releasing.
Calypso turned around slowly and saw their father pointing a gun right at her. It took all of her willpower to not scream. This was her father, he would not shoot them. He must have been testing them.
Atlas wasn’t a very paternal person, but he was not a murderer.
Zoë looked back and forth between us and communicated something to me with a look. Go to your room while I distract him.
My mind was foggy, and I couldn’t understand what was going on.
“Father,” Zoë said, and he swung the gun over to face her.
Atlas had his eyes trained fiercely on Zoë, and so I inched towards the stairs, as she continued stalling him.
“What are you doing father? Put the gun down, we are your daughters.”
Calypso was almost at the stairs, but the word “we” triggered Atlas to wonder where his other daughter was. The gun was back on her, and she froze.
Atlas growled, “Don’t move, Calypso. You have no choice.”
Then he smiled creepily, “You better hope for a good afterlife… maybe you’ll meet your mother there.”
Calypso closed her eyes, waiting for the impact, but opened it when she saw Zoë trying to wrestle the gun out of Atlas’s hands. It was over in a flash, and Atlas had the gun loaded and held against Zoë’s temple. She looked at Calypso and gave the silent message: Go.
She swallowed, and backed up, wishing desperately to do something for Zoë, but she knew it was too late. Even when she was barreling up the stairs, she knew it.
BANG.
Calypso choked back a sob.
BANG.
She stumbled at the top of the stairs, wondering just how many shots a person could take before they die.
BANG.
Calypso shut her door and locked it, rushing to grab her phone. She dialed 911 in and called the number, hoping desperately for them to pick up faster.
“Hello, this the Bahama’s Poli-”
“My father murdered my sister, please come quick!” she whisper-yelled into the receiver, and gave them her address with rapid fire succession.
A bang at the door made her drop her phone, and she backed into the window. A thought suddenly occurred to her, and she slammed the window open, and hauled herself into the tree outside.
Calypso jumped down from the tree and ran into her neighbors yard, pushing her back against the wall, farthest from her house and banged on the window, praying they would open it.
They did, but Calypso would never forgive herself for not saving her sister.
~~~~~~~~~~
Calypso jolted herself from the memory when she heard the bell at the front door of the store opening. There were fresh tears on her face, so she hastily wiped them and tried to look presentable, so when her new foster parents came, she would embarrass herself for her first impression.
She looked at the couple who just came into the store. There was a woman, and she was beautiful. So beautiful, she put Aphrodite Mclean to shame. She had curly, black hair, full lips, and beautiful doe eyes. The man next to her was the exact same, except switched genders. He had dark skin, close cropped black hair, and dark brown eyes.
Calypso watched as the couple made their way to the front desk where Iris stood, all the while whispering to each other and laughing at something the other said. They were a cute couple.
She heard Iris’s loud voice welcome them, and they started talking.
“Hello, my name is Silena Beckendorf, and this is Charlie.” the pretty woman said, and the man nodded in agreement.
“We are here for Calypso Atlas, we are her new foster parents.”
It took a couple of seconds for Calypso to realize that they were talking about her, and she shot up from her seat.
Her new foster mother, Silena, saw her coming and gave Calypso a smile.
That smile almost made Calypso believe that she could be loved again.

What are your favorite tropes or themes you like seeing in PJO fic? Do you have any recs for them?
I’m gonna preface my response by saying I haven’t really read any PJO fanfics that I wasn’t already subscribed to in at least a year.
With that out of the way, I don’t really have any favorite tropes or themes I like in PJO fics, as what I like is more broad. However, I do tend to favor hurt/comfort and angst in general across all fandoms I’m in. I also like fics that take place during canon to expand on topics that can’t really be brought to much depth in the actual books due to them being aimed at kids. Canon-divergent fics are also fun. So are fics that explore Percy’s potential relationships with his immortal family (not the Olympians but the underwater family). Also fics that focus on chb campers being friends are really good. Crack fics are also something I like to indulge in. That being said, here’s some recs:
(note: I looked through some of my 643 pages of ao3 history for this, and don’t remember most of these fics. But I remember liking them…I think. The vibes from the summary and tags seem good at the very least)
Here’s a previous post I made that had fic recs
the anatomy of a hurricane by barbarianprincess
On Heists and Home Economics by chelletheriter
Like a New Yorker by notalotgoingonatthisinstant
Out of Mind, Out of Control by allieae
Venom by maverickk
For Zoe Nightshade by thewinginthenight
across the river by r1ptides
Fighting Blind by Multifandom_damnation
Familiar Faces by annabetn
Our Bonds Bend, Not Break by forestfairy72
asymptote by eternalmagic
Grover’s Worries by Nikki_RavenScar
I gave up looking after this point lmao. Anyways here’s just a few fics that I’ve read and liked in one way or another.
There was a really good Percy & Triton sibling relationship fic that I would love to recommend (Fishing in Alaska you will always be famous to me) but the author has deleted their online presence including the fic. I did see that someone was reposting it on ao3 but that’s technically stolen work which I don’t condone and wrong without direct permission from the original creator (I wonder if it got taken down or not)
A lot of my mutuals are very talented writers so I would recommend checking them out. Here’s their tumblrs and ao3

Hazbin Hotel theory, AKA, how time effects immortals.
I have actually found a way to fit 3 theories I made together. I am very surprised, but here we go. As you can see they are all connected to how time effects immortal being in the Hellaverse.
To start off, my theory for how old Zestial could be. A lot of people have suggested he could be from the Tudor period, due to his shakespearian mannerisms, but I have an alternative. He reminds me a lot of a character from Percy Jackson, someone named Zoe Nightshade. She is a hunter of Artemis, a clan of immortal maidens who hunt alongside the goddess. She is thousands of years old, and there are some comedic moments from her speaking in a shakespearian manner, then getting annoyed when corrected because she finds the English language irritatingly prone to change. It's entirely possible Zestial faced a similar problem but decided to just not bother changing. If so, this could mean he outdates the English language as we know it. If you don't know what I mean, just take a look at the original draft of Beowulf. Then you'll understand what REAL Old English looks like.
However, this does raise a question. If Zestial, a mortal soul who at most can't be younger than William's conquest of England, is having trouble adapting to the modern language, how come beings that date back to the start of creation, like Lucifer, Adam, Sera, and the other Deadly Sins, fully embrace modern slang. It needs to be remembered that these entities are not human. They do not age, they do not wither, their bodies are fueled by primordial magic. Even Adam only barely counts as human, with him, Lilith and Eve being the progenitors of our race. Nothing completely mortal can kickstart a globe spanning species with just two participants. It seems that with natural, ingrained magic power comes a great ability to adapt and change. This could also explain how, well, nice some of the sins are. It's entirely possible that spending millennia marinating in failure and spite can get tiring, leading to a desire to seek self care. That's part of why Stolas had been my favourite character before I found out he was 35, I loved the idea of an ancient force of evil just becoming burnt out and depressed. (Don't get me wrong I still think he's great but it's a bit of a let down. Episode one of season 2 was great for angst fans, not so much for lore fans.) This would explain a lot, and would allow me to ignore all the 'the king of lust believes in consent' memes I keep seeing. Bee for example was probably quite a bitch (hahaha) until recently, I can imagine her just randomly eating people when they annoy her. I don't even want to say what Ozzie once was. I would have said that Lucifer might have once taken a more hands on approach to running hell, but my third theory disputes that to explain why he's the way he is (sorry to string you along.) To be fair, they might not all have changed for the better. Mammon, for example. I headcanon he was once more like a Great Beast guarding his vast wealth, like the dragons of old, as his many servants brought him more treasures. Then he discovered capitalism, possibly when global trade and slavery became a big deal. Thanks Britain. I know I'd prefer to deal with Smaug than Jeff Bezos.
I also suspect that they changed mannerisms as well as behaviours. After all, it doesn't really make sense that many characters have american accents when they were around before the first humans even made it across the land bridge to Alaska. They've likely changed with the times. Not only that, their rings have likely changed. I imagine that the ring of wrath once was very similar to Sparta, and maybe after that the viking idea of Norway. As Greed is currently overrun with mafia stereotypes, it was probably once a haven for blackbeard era pirates. I also for some reason imagine Bee as having been french. No hate intended (except for when I need to make jokes about the centuries old blood feud that existed between britain and france, in which case Confound You, you snail eating poltroons!) Now here's the part you wouldn't have been expecting. With all this in mind, what was Lucifer like way back when. Well here's the thing, I think he was Irish.
I have been rereading some old british folklore, and honestly, despite the devil being a prince of darkness, the great dragon, the tempting servant, he's a bit of a failboy. Like, there's this one legend where he was digging a trench to flood some churches, only for some random lady to light a candle and cause a cockrel to crow, tricking him into thinking the sun was rising and running away. There's also the legend of Jack O the Lantern, where he came to drag Jack to hell, but jack went 'oh, lets play a trick on those priests, you turn into a multiplying coin, and I'll give it to them, and then you'll leave and they'll think they robbed each other' the devil immediately cancelled his plans to play, turned into a coin, and was unceremoniously shoved into a bag until he promised never to send Jack to hell. Even when the puritans came along and ruined everyone's fun, it was implied that instead of utilising his many minions to spread evil, the devil would just go around randomly convincing farmers daughters to do interesting things instead of being good little repressed women. I could totally see this guy personally going down to Georgia and challenging some kid to a fiddling contest for his soul, or spending years depressed making ducks because his wife left. Dear god.

WHY HEROES OF OLYMPUS IS MY LEAST FAVOURITE RRVERSE SERIES
Disclaimer: I like Heroes of Olympus and every single book in the RRverse, it's just a few things I found lacking so stfu before you come fuming
Spoiler warning for both Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan
Most of my issues boil down to some aspects which had potential for exploration but were just forgotten
The potential of some of the friendships between the Seven (we all know Piper and Percy would dominate)
Percy and Annabeth being forgotten after GOING THROUGH TARTARUS?! YOU CAN'T TELL ME THEY'RE NOT TRAUMATISED
also also also Dark Percy would be so fucking cool (not exactly a criticism, just something that would've been interesting)
Shipping every other character (case in point: Caleo)
The battle in Blood of Olympus is kinda lackluster. Half of the Last Olympian was the battle between the demigods and the Titans but here it's eh just Piper, Leo and Jason doing their thing (I'm glad Rick didn't go that route for The Tower of Nero, The Tower of Nero was good shit)
Okay let's be honest lots of these criticisms are of Blood of Olympus I enjoyed Blood of Olympus but there wasn't enough payoff for some things hinted earlier in the series (like the implication of Percy not being able to sacrifice something given his fatal flaw is loyalty)
The antagonists are fine tbh, they're just not as compelling as Luke Castellan from PJO was
The plot IS high stakes, but you what would make it even MORE high stakes? Death, which there isn't enough of! It would just make it more meaningful and no Leo doesn't count he comes back to life I feel like he should've stayed dead he doesnt do shit in The Trials of Apollo. Beckendorf, Silena, Luke, Zoe Nightshade: these deaths were all so impactful. The killings started in The Titan's Curse and when they started, it was like "Oh SHIT we're really in it now"
Anyways a few things I just wanna point out that aren't criticisms
I REFUSE TO ACCEPT THAT PERCABETH'S GREY STREAKS FADED I REJECT THAT CANON
Ngl I don't care about the Curse of Achilles getting washed away like yeah it was cool in The Last Olympian okay bye lmao
WHERE WAS GROVER MAN COMES FOR ONE SCENE IN THE ENTIRE SERIES HE WAS PERCY'S BEST FRIEND 😭
To end it here, I do want to say that I like Heroes of Olympus and that I'm a fan of the Riordanverse. The characters and their interactions (at least what we got), the return of old characters like Percy and Annabeth, the action and adventure, the prophecy, the high stakes, the return to the world of the Greek gods, the humour, the angst: I thoroughly enjoyed it. Again, it's just a few criticisms. Just cause you criticise something you love doesn't mean you don't love it at all.
Anyways Trials of Apollo is way better the villain is incredible and the ending HOLY SHIT THE ENDING MADE ME CRY LIKE A BABY THE LAST PARAGRAPH WAS IMMACULATE

headcanon that once in a while a new hunter comes along that falls for artemis and artemis entertains them, just a little, until one of the older hunters has to explain zöe and what happened, and that artemis most certainly does not love the new hunter, she’s just passing the time

Refering to a previous post (percy having surviors guilt) i can imagine Percy just laying in bed, trying to sleep, with tears blurring his vision, thinking about how many died for a cause they believed was right. Charlie blowing up the ship though he was still on it and couldnt get off, Selena dying from a drakon while posing as Clarisse to make things right, Lee Fletcher dying protecting camp under it’s first attack in BotL, Bianca getting a figure for Nico in the gods junk pile, Zoe protecting her friends and gied at her fathers hand, Ethan falling 600 stories on the ground after being stabbed by a shard of his own blade trying to kill Kronos in honor of his mother and other minor gods, Michael Yew dying during the Battle of Manhattan on the Williams Gate Bridge (thats the right bridge right?), demigods dying on the Princess Andromeda after in exploded. What hurt more was that a few of the deaths were by his hand. At this point Percy felt awful. He was trying not to cry, for fear of waking anyone at camp up. He did fall back asleep at somepoint during the night, he couldn’t remember when or if he did. He thought maybe the crying session the previous night was made up or just in his head, but there were tear stains on his pillow.

if “as it was” by hozier doesn’t play during zoe nightshade’s death while artemis blesses her into the aether while percy & co are crying their eyes out and if it doesn’t play when bianca dies with percy looking on paralyzed w fear/horror/immediate guilt while doing a cut away to nico having a horrific feeling deep in his bones and then shaking it off regardless bc his sister is immortal and again when annabeth is holding the earth - arms shaking but eyes stormy and steady then What Is The Point
