Sometimes I genuinely feel sorry for people without siblings bc when they read about Sirius and Regulus they won’t feel that gut wrenching, heart clenching, absolutely crushing guiltdisappointmentanger over the complexity of their situation in the same way…

I never thought about it before but I understand what you mean. I also think it can be hard to understand how you can both hate someone and love someone so much. I think no matter how the story goes they have such a complex relationship to work through and it’s hard to understand “no one is allowed to hate my sibling but me” if you’ve never felt that.

New Chapter / 20 / Primped and Preened

James lifts his head just enough to glare half-heartedly at him. “You’re enjoying this way too much.”

Regulus tilts his head, his smirk softening into something a little more dangerous, a little more smug.

“Immensely,” he says.

James sighs dramatically, though there’s a flicker of warmth in his eyes that he can’t quite hide.

“Come on,” he says, trying for a pleading tone. “Do me a favor and spare me the humiliation. I did apologise, you know. Sincerely.”

“I know,” Regulus whispers. He leans in, his lips quirking as he adds, “That’s a good boy.”

James freezes.

His entire body tenses, his hands tightening slightly where they’re resting against Regulus’ hips. Heat rushes to his face, and his breath catches in his throat. Regulus, of course, notices immediately, because of course he does.

“What?” James manages to croak, his voice coming out rough and uneven.

Regulus doesn’t answer right away. Instead, he leans closer, his breath warm against James’ ear as he repeats, low and deliberate, “I said, that’s a good boy, James.”

The words hit James like a whip, sharp and electric, and for a moment, he forgets how to breathe. His head drops slightly, his hands gripping Regulus a little tighter as his brain short-circuits completely. Oh, for the love of God.

Regulus Black who feels hurt and betrayed by his brother who suddenly stops talking to him.

Evan Rosier, who suddenly isn’t as happy with his blond hair as he used to be. He watches his two best friends get along more and more, and it pains him. It pains him so. He just can’t stand the thought of losing them both… losing Barty.

And Regulus just stood there, hearing his big brother scream, knowing he couldn’t do a thing to stop it.

Regulus Arcturus Black, who survived the cave, and the Inferi, and now has to return home.. but he can’t go to number twelve- not after his betrayal. His incriminating actions, in the eyes of the dark lord.

Regulus Arcturus Black, who staggers up to the Potter’s front door; one leg mangled beyond recognition, half his face disfigured by the inferi’s claws. Sirius could almost think he were a wraith, come to haunt him, if he didn’t recognize his little brother’s birthmark on his neck. The only thing their mother had deemed an imperfection in Regulus.

Regulus Arcturus Black, who passes out upon sight of his brother, because now he can rest. Sirius has him, and he’ll be safe. Sirius has him, and Regulus won’t have to worry.

(And if you want angst (sorry not sorry,) but Regulus Arcturus Black, who succumbs to his wounds in his brother’s arms, because he finally feels accomplished, finally feels like he’s succeeded. He finally made Sirius proud, for what he’s done.)

What if on Christmas every year growing up, Sirius and Regulus never had ‘Santa’ come by. What if every year Regulus and Sirius wondered why all the other children got gifts while they got nothing. What if Sirius figures it out when he’s 8 and Regulus is 5, realizes it’s their parent’s fault not theirs, and tries to fix it. What if Sirius convinces Regulus it’s because they don’t have a tree, so every year now they make Christmas trees out of paper, put gifts for each other around there, and at night when Regulus is sleeping- Sirius slips two extra ones in; one for each of them. What if he keeps doing it every year, until Regulus is 13 and still believing in Santa- because his PARENTS would never do that.

What if when Sirius runs away, it’s Regulus’ first Christmas alone- and it’s hard enough without his brother- but he makes the little Christmas tree and does his little ritual, and then wakes up the next morning to nothing.

What if Regulus’ childhood dies the same day Sirius’ starts, gathered around a real tree with James and his family.

What about that.

“Catch me!” Five-year-old Regulus shouted excitedly, running toward Sirius as they played in the snow. Laughter filled the air as they both tumbled backward, too happy to care about the cold biting their skin.

“Catch me,” seventeen-year-old Regulus whispered into the cave as he began to fall into the water, the first Inferius seizing his ankle. His heart ached with the realization that he would miss Sirius until his last breath, even when he wasn't there to catch him this time.
