Bench-Finder

Ever since I adopted Flynn, he’s had a habit of “finding” & showing me benches he comes across. He will excitedly run to the bench & then hang around, watching keenly as I approach, making sure I notice what he’s showing me. Flynn seems quite disappointed if I ignore his find - he’ll hang back by the seat for a time & give me the same expression he might if I refused a request to play. 

Over the years, Flynn has even taken to physically herding me towards certain favourite benches - like this one! If I seem like I am going to pass the bench without stopping, Flynn will drift into my path, then stop dead, standing right in front of my feet, body angled strategically so that, in order for me to step around Flynn, I also have to step towards the bench. He is... surprisingly good at pushing you in the way he wants you to go. He’ll do this to one or two of our close friends too. 

While generally focused on benches, Flynn also has a remarkable memory for any random place I’ve stopped for a rest... If I once sat on a fallen tree trunk, or a stump, or a wall, or rock, then when we pass that way again - even many weeks later & even if it’s well off the path - Flynn will start trying to usher me that way again. “Here’s your seat, Madam!”

This insistence I regularly stop & sit makes me laugh because Flynn is definitely not doing it because he wants a rest... & I know he also finds me stopping for a break on walks terribly boring. I know this, because generally within a few seconds of me complying & sitting down (& getting observed by the dog!), Flynn decides, “Right. Job done. The human is rested, time to move” & starts hopping about, doing his “Get up, get up, get up!” dance. If that doesn’t work, he’ll try to get me onto my feet & down the path, using his ball as a lure, but that’s another story.

I’d assume Flynn insists I sit (briefly!) because *sometimes* he gets a treat when we stop at a bench but he gets treats regularly while we walk - & I play with him throughout too... So when & why did The Human Must Sit On The Bench become a rule, in Flynn’s collie mind? 

He’s a weird little dog.

but yeah in the same vein of Bruce’s kids only following his orders in the field…of course they do. in Gotham, if you don’t hit the deck when Bruce says “Down!” you’re getting hurt, at bare minimum. there’s no questioning orders or hesitating. you have to trust that when B tells you to do something, it’s in your best interest, or in the best interest of the civilians, to do it — and do it really fucking well. really fucking fast.

that doesn’t mean the JL give orders in the same way, even though they’re well-intentioned. that doesn’t mean they fully grasp an emergency scene or its civilians’ needs. they might not realize how risky an order they, as a meta, give to a fully human vigilante is. they’re not a tactician the way Bruce is — they’re not thinking in plans, and backup plans, and fallback plans and extractions.

so yeah, Dick doesn’t take direct orders from anyone but B. of course he doesn’t.

Imagine you were roommates with someone who didn’t speak your language. And like. You guys are best friends, you love your roommate so much. You hang out all the time and it’s great.

But sometimes when you go to scratch an itch they suddenly get so upset. Like they’ll yell or clap or make weird sounds. You have no idea why because you’re itchy. You gotta scratch the itch! But it makes them so upset that you only scratch itches when they aren’t around.

Otherwise stuff is fine, they feed you and you’re happy living with them. You play games and stuff and even though you don’t speak the same language you both have a lot of fun. It’s just that sometimes they’ll burst out for no reason and you just get to deal with it.

That’s basically what it’s like for our pets, I think.

the batkids are strong in their own rights. they're used to protecting their friends and loved ones. they are the protective one in their teams.

however, whenever Bruce is around, all of a sudden they became kittens held by the mother. all those protective instincts? gone. they are now with their father and their job is to duck or satay away or run to safety when instructed. jumping in front of harm's way? that's dad's job. them's the rules.

btw if you borrow dvds or cds from library you can rip them onto your own blanks or onto your hard drive or whatever. librarians don’t care and they won’t know if you do it or not

the batkids all have a running joke with non-family members and mission partners where they stumble across something ridiculous and just casually throw out a “oh yeah Batman and I ran into this once” or a “B taught me how to do that actually” despite literally never having done/seen the thing before.

it started out as a joke and then it became a way to keep civilians and fellow heroes from panicking when things go sideways with an audience.

massive glowing alien that sucks out your soul? Batman fought one a few years back. defusing a nuclear bomb? B had them drilling on that once, actually. seance to rescue a civilian girl from a haunted sewer? not to fear, Batman had them do a whole unit on rescue spellwork actually

Danny gets outed/reveals/something and everybody knows he's Phantom. There are science organizations that are absolutely *frothing* at the mouth to hire him.

He gets hired to modify and then deploy hurricane and tornado reading equipment because he's able to fly into the center unharmed. There is much less margin or error because he's always able to get the equipment deployed if the weather is still happening.

Maybe it's a side job while he's in school for his BA or something
