Discrepancy #40
Gilyoung is portrayed differently. This is also a case of writers analysis.
Iāve said in Discrepancy #4 that Gilyoung is introduced differently in the novel and I was curious how that would change his character.
Welp I got my answer :D
Now hereās the thing, Iām a writer. I analyze things as a writer. So allow me to introduce the writing technique Iāll be talking about today: Show Donāt Tell.
Itās a basic technique that tends to get recommended to newer writers. Show your audience what you want them to know, donāt just tell them. This works best for explaining emotions or the emotional impact of something. For example:
OP was very disappointed when she looked at her phone and saw her bad grade.
This is an example of telling the reader exactly what happened. Versus this:
Once the grades dropped, OP immediately checked her grade book. She was proud of her work and was sure that the teacher saw that too. As soon as the page loaded, her smile dropped as she stared in confusion. She searched the page to be sure there was no mistake. Her hands trembled softly and everything around her felt suffocating. Her eyes stung and her chest clenched. She quietly turned off her phone and didnāt mention the grade.
See the difference? Itās more personal, more believable, more detailed. Itās just an easy method for newer writers to practice being descriptive.
But, like all writing ārules,ā they can be broken. Letās examine the novel and webtoon.
Here is how Gilyoung is portrayed in the novel:

[ORV Novel, Chapter 7]
This is an example of āTell.ā The author is plainly telling us whatās going on. Why does this work? We donāt know these characters yet. This is the first time Gilyoung is being introduced so we kinda have to be told how heās feeling. The author wants us to perceive him in a certain way and the only way to do that this early into the story is to plainly tell us.
The beginning of the story is just that, the beginning. Theyāre laying the groundwork. Was there a way to do it more elegantly? Yeah, probably. But for these purposes, it works just fine. Honestly, as long as it works it works. Donāt fix it if it aināt broke.
Also this novel is pretty good at show donāt tell, as shown in the 4th paragraph of the screenshot but I digress.
Now letās look at the webtoon:

[ORV Webtoon, Episode 7]
This is an example of āShow.ā There are no words describing Gilyoung, just his expressions and body language. So why does this not work?
Well, weāre missing information. What is the significance of Gilyoung just standing there? What is the significance of him staring at a body? Why is he staring at a body? Who is the body heās staring at?
All of these questions are answered in the novel because we have more information. We know that itās probably his mom that heās staring at. We canāt kinda pick it up that the person heās staring at is important to home due to framing and composition, but who is she? Who is she to him? We donāt know. Hell, we never find out in the webtoon. Thatās information given in the novel that is just left out.
So letās return to the start of this post. How does this portray Gilyoung differently?
The novel portrays Gilyoung as a child that has just watched everything go down around him and watched his mother try to kill someone and then got herself killed. Hes reasonably scared and wants comfort. Heās around 11 I think? 10? My service isnāt good enough to look that up right now. Anyways, when Dokja offers him comfort, even though he has ulterior motives, Gilyoung is going to latch onto him.
Because weāre lacking a lot of the context surrounding Gilyoung (his mother, her actions, and his laughter that I referenced in Discrepancy #4), Gilyoung just seems like a traumatized kid that isnāt processing whatās happening. And yeah, he is on a base level, but thereās no depth to that.
Dokjaās decision to talk to Gilyoung is so impactful in the novel because we get the line about Gilyoung not grieving his mother but fearing death. Thereās depth to that decision. Not only is he taking advantage of Gilyoungās fears to gain the constellationsā favor, but also providing this kid another chance of survival. Heās saving Gilyoung again.
In the webtoon, it looks like Dokja saw this scared kid and is only using him for personal gain. It doesnāt look like he understands Gilyoungās pain or fear.
But Dokja does. He does understand. We donāt know that yet, but later on when Dokjaās backstory with his dad comes to light, it shows that yeah, he does kinda understand what itās like to be a kid in a shitty situation with no one to turn to.
Anyways, thatās my lecture on show donāt tell.

I was rewatching my Buffy DVDs and found the JW commentary. Even though his views on women/feminism tainted this show, he does explain his directing decisions.
If you don't believe the Spuffy fans, at least believe the writers and actors who created their story!

It's the "wait...Bangel was a big deal?" for me.
JW actually admits that Angel reappearing in the last episode and the Bangel kiss was, in fact, "fan service."
Emphasis on the VOCAL MINORITY that leads to the fan service. Something iconic enough (The Bangel kiss) to "give people hope( š) that Buffy and Angel might one day work out" - purple
I don't know what was going through that brain of his, but Parker was NOT "the most important relationship of her life." Like sir, where did that come from? - green

The chemistry between both David/Sarah and James/Sarah is insane. However, I like how both relationships have their own distinct chemistry. - yellow
Spike is more on Buffy's level. he understands her, both physically and emotionally, something Angel struggles with. - orange
The relationship is more nuanced, we witnessed the development, and we watched it build from the ground up. We can point out pivotal moments in the relationship. Spike has more dynamic, he's not just "the tall, dark and handsome vampire" that seduces Buffy.
Buffy tells Spike things she wouldn't tell anybody else.
"These two" (Sarah/Buffy & James/Spike), yes, I agree š¤- blue

Angel is described as an object of desire. Buffy falls in love because of his looks. If Angel wasn't attractive, would she have fallen for him? It's his body that "becomes the object of her gaze."
He really has his looks to offer. "He's tall, dark, and handsome" so he must be a love interest. "Otherwise what else would his purpose be?"
The analysis states that Angel functions as Buffy's "homme fatal,"Ā (An ultimately seductive and dangerous man; a womanizer) which gives a nod to Liam's character, his human self.

Joss explains the comparisons between souled and soulless Spike and his behavior/change. Soulless Spike didn't recognize boundaries.
JW still highlights that Spike needs development before he and Buffy become "lovers" again.
The writer of the character and the story states that this man can be redeemed.

Higuchiās Unrevealed Ability
my theory on what it could beā¦

i think that Higuchiās ability will be called āTakekurabeā (Growing Up/Childās Play) after her most famous work, and i believe it might have something to do with reincarnation. hereās whyā¦

in this official art she is featured with red spider lilies, which are symbolic of death, but are also thought of as a bridge between heaven & earthā¦a reminder of the ācyclical nature of life & deathā
Takekurabe also explores themes such as how life is fleeting. & also abt being forced into a role that you didnāt want, or wouldnāt have chosen for yourself

(plus potential foreshadowing: in this official art, Higuchi is surrounded by pinwheelsā which symbolize childhood, but also the cycle of life, & the buddhist teaching of reincarnation)

back to reincarnationā¦
after being told that Akutagawa may never wake up, she reached out to him & a glow appeared around her handā like she was activating an abilityā before pulling away bc she remembered that he didnāt want her (or anyoneās) help

but this means that sheās able to give help in this sort of situation
additionally, the fact that she almost always appears in official arts w Akutagawa indicates that she will probably use her ability on him at some point, which makes sense considering his terminal condition

(note the pulse in the background, his bright eyes, & her white suit)
because we have yet to see her use her ability, iām assuming that she can only use it once, so sheād be giving up her life for Akutagawaās (a life for a lifeā his reincarnation)
this would imitate irl Higuchiās unfortunately short lifeā with her having died at only 25 years old. it also makes sense to give her such a powerful ability since irl Higuchi is such an important figure in japanese historyā japanās first professional woman writer of modern literature
now for a less likely, but fun theoryā¦
i wonder if Higuchiās sister has anything to do with her ability (in bsd sheās unnamed, but her irl sisterās name was Kuniko so thatās what weāll call her)

according to Higuchiās bungo episode, despite her literary genius, irl Higuchi was practically useless without her sister

Kuniko was the one who made what Higuchi did possible & kept things functional behind the scenes

so i think itād be super interesting (& a cool irl reference) if Kuniko was involved in some way with Higuchiās ability (i also just want to see more of her bc this sister duo is so cute :ā))

bonus: when i watched this anime adaptation of Takekurabe, this was the ending scene & i wonder if it was harukawaās inspiration for this official art š„¹

white lilies represent purity, & since they were off by the side of the road, they might have represented the characterās fleeting purity. white lilies are also used at funerals to represent a soulās return to purity & its journey to the afterlife⦠which circles back to the reincarnation theme š
#i canāt wait for asgr to explore Higuchiās character more. i know heāll do her justice (even if itās painful š)#ps i found that anime to be a really good adaptation of her book! it captured the nostalgic & melancholic tones well#tho ofc nothing can replace reading the book itself⦠Higuchi-sensei was such a talented writer#if youāre interested i definitely recommend reading AND watching :ā)#rambling about bsd again#bsd#bungou stray dogs#bsd higuchi#higuchi ichiyo#takekurabe#bsd literature#bsd analysis#bsd meta

I think the reason why Naruto fans get so passionate and upset about the series is because of how real it can be. Naruto isnāt about paragon heroes outdoing dastardly villains. Itās about human beings fighting tooth and nail to survive in a world surrounded by death. Itās about broken systems made and perpetuated by broken people.
The Hyuga clan isnāt just antagonistic or pretentious, they practice slavery.
The Uchiha clan werenāt just killed by some raging psychopath, they were systematically massacred.
Itachi isnāt just cruel to Sasuke because heās a bad brother, heās cruel because heād been told time and time again that you can only survive by being cruel and he wants nothing more than for Sasuke to survive.
Nagato isnāt trying to take over the world just for the sake of power, heās trying to take over the world because it beat him down to the point of believing that the only chance at peace there is is the world being forced into compliance through fear.
Iruka isnāt hard on Naruto just because heās a strict teacher, heās hard on Naruto because he knows from experience how unforgiving the world is towards orphans.
Kakashi isnāt just some silly and slightly lazy teacher, heās a contract killer still grieving his loved ones and struggling to do better without knowing how heās supposed to.
Sakura isnāt just a fangirl, sheās a normal girl in a very dangerous and abnormal world constantly being made to choose between what sheās supposed to do and what she feels.
Sasuke isnāt just some edgelord, heās a survivor who lost everything then gets repeatedly told that he has to choose between keeping what heās gained and doing better than his brother.
Naruto isnāt just trying to be the best Hokage there ever was, heās trying to prove his worth to a society that abandoned him just for existing and, in a way, confirm his worth to himself.
The Naruto story is about humans trying to force themselves into the role of weapons because thatās what they were told they had to be. Itās a story where everyone is a perpetrator but no one is trying to do wrong. Itās a story where everyone is a victim but no one is a perfect victim.
The world and the characters arenāt simple and trying to simplify them only takes away from them. So of course we get passionate about showing off all the reasons why they shouldnāt be simplified and all of the ways theyāre complicated. Of course we get upset when we see others simplifying them or selling certain aspects of their characters short. Of course we get upset when the series itself simplifies them. Of course we get upset when the series chooses to abandon them. Because it not only feels like the characters are giving up, it feels like the series is betraying anyone who chose to get invested in its complexities.

wendy and dipper's dynamic is so important to me.
i know she's often categorized as just his crush, but i truly think she's the first REAL friend dipper's ever had outside of mabel. we know he struggles to make friends back home and tries really hard to be mature.
we also know wendy tries to be mature for her age, too. she's the youngest of her friend group and tries really hard to put on a whole cool, chill exterior: but she's just as stressed and anxious under the surface.
the whole "you were a freak" scene during the mystery shack party is further evidence of this.
dipper lets her be a kid again. WHICH SHE STILL IS. she's only fifteen, even though from dipper's perspective that's impossible cool and adult. she's not even old enough to drive. she still has nightmares about her mother dying. she's the only girl left in her family at home. dipper gives her a chance to not be so grown-up for once.
in almost every instance we see them hanging out, they're genuinely having a good time: building golf cart ramps, making up security camera games to pass the time at work, playing video games. friendship comes VERY easy for them. when dipper isn't freaking out about how to talk to her, they get along very well and seem to enjoy the same activities.
they keep each other's secrets. she often corrects robbie when he takes a jab at dipper and invites him to parties. she tries to make him look cool in front of her friends after what he did in the convenience store.
she gives him her hat. she takes his.
i've seen some folks say that it wasn't fair that mabel got close friends over the summer, and dipper didn't get any. to me, that's missing the obvious: he got wendy. they're best friends.
i think it's so important that it's NOT a one-sided dynamic. sure, he liked her -- of course he liked her. who wouldn't??? but he DOESN'T go the route of bill and gideon; he accepts the friendship, treasures it.
that's so fucking good.

The King's Men's plot structure is genius.
TKM has been critized a lot for not following the conventional plot structure, because it doesnt end inmediatly at the resolution of the climax, like they taught us in class. But it actually has a reason behind it and it think that is what makes AFTG unique and Nora Sakavic an amazing writer. I'll explain.
So, we all know AFTG has a lot of chess metaphors, however i think it doesnt contain the metaphors, it is the metaphor. Each character represents a piece of the board (Riko king, Kevin queen, Neil pawn, Andrew knight, etc) and exy is the chess, but but but, a chess game not only involves the pieces, the game cannot exist without someone playing, the chess masters (which would be Kengo, Ichiriu, Nathan and all the mafia stuff).
So, AFTG is divided into two plots happening at the same time: what happens on the chess board (exy season) and what happens outside it (the mafia mess).
Of couse, the climax has to be about the outside out, because who cares which one of pieces move in which way if the players are pointing guns at eachother under the board? The guns are more more important. So who cares? The pieces on the board care, the ones that are being played with. And who is the narrator? The character that represents the pawn, the less important figure of the entire room.
Yeah, the 'outside of the board' plot is over half way into the book, but it doesnt matter because that happens outside the board, the chess game has not ended yet. The pawn cannot go back to rest in the box until the game is over, until the king dies. The book cannot be over until the chess game our protagonist is a piece of ends. The books have to end with the king's (Riko) death and that is exactly what happens.
If this isnt excellent writing and one of the best examples of know the rules so you can break them, i dont what is.

honestly just in general it's very exhausting to try to analyze media that is literally meant to be analyzed, only for the replies to be filled with people arguing not against your analysis, but against the premise that the media can be analyzed at all.
i don't even know what to say about it without starting to really betray my frustration, so i'll just settle withā just don't engage with analysis posts? I'm serious. if you're typing a response to a media analysis post, reread what you've written and ask yourself "is this comment/response against the very concept of analyzing the media at all?" and if the answer is yes then delete it all and go sit in the shame corner. throw your curtains away if you want to so bad and stop telling me that I'm not allowed to hum and haw at the fact mine are blue
#ml fandom salt#I suppose#and no amount of adding ''stop telling me to not analyze the media'' on my analysis posts stops people from saying it anyway#and yes. the leaks count. stop telling me that the existence of outdated leaks invalidates all analyses of the completed material#and no. just like every other time i've said this. me saying that i don't care about the leaks is not an invitation for you to try to#convince me to care about the leaks#do i tag this spoilers? it feels weird to. i mean this to be a vague overarching thing about media in general#also of course any ''or maybe the writers are just bad'' arguments ALSO are included in this. YOU guys have been my bane since FOREVER#would you guys consider commenting on fanart with ''umm.... drawing seems pretty pointless lmao'' rude?#i know this is not the first time i've made a post like this and i'm sure it won't be the last

This is just a not-so friendly reminder to non-disabled people, especially authors, people in fandoms or in media analysis circles: Cripple/crippled is not just a fancy way of faying "badly injured". it's not an adjective you can just throw in to spice up your sentence because you used "injured" or "disabled" too many times in that paragraph, or because you feel like it gives your writing some extra "oomph".
Cripple is a slur.
A slur the physically disabled community has been asking people not to use for DECADES, since at least the 1970's (50 years). It's a slur with centuries of abuse behind it, centuries of being used to justify physically disabled people as less-than, centuries of demonisation, mistreatment, ostracization, and murder.
Some people within the physical disability community are reclaiming it, that's where movements like cripplepunk (also known as crip-punk or C-punk) come from. That's fine, I'm not talking about that. I love the cripplepunk movement and everything it stands for: being unapologetic about our disabilities and not changing ourselves for the comfort or convenience of able-bodied folks. But the people who use it in that context understand the history of the word, they know how it was used to hurt us, and they understand that not everyone in the physically disabled community is comfortable with the use of the word, especially those who were around when someone being labelled as "crippled" was seen as a valid reason to treat them as less than human. They understand the impact of the word.
But If you, as an able bodied person, casually uses "cripple" in your work, at best you are showing your disabled audience that you haven't been listening to us, at worst, you show you don't care about weather we feel safe in the spaces you have created.
And for able-bodied authors specifically, even if your character is physically disabled, I'd still recommend avoiding it unless you're prepared to do a LOT of sensitivity readings from multiple sensitivity readers. I've been physically disabled since I was 1 year old, I learned to walk for the first time in prosthetics and have been using a wheelchair since I was in school, I have no memory of life as an able-bodied person, and even I don't feel comfortable using the word cripple in my work.
It's a loaded word, with a lot of implications and a LOT of very dark, and for some people, very recent history. It's not a sentence enhancer to just throw in willy-nilly. Please.

How Body LanguageĀ ChangesĀ When a Character Is Falling in Love (Whether They Admit It or Not)
When someone starts to fall, itshows up everywhereānot in the love confession (thatās the easy part), but in the twitch of a smile, in the silence that suddenly feels charged, in the way someoneās handĀ almostĀ reaches out before pulling back.
ⰠThey start listening⦠with their whole damn body
Suddenly, theyāre turned toward this person all the time. Full body facing them. Chin tilted slightly in. They lean forward during small talk like itās breaking news. They notice things, like the rhythm of their voice, the way their lips move when they think too hard. They stop fiddling with their phone. Their knee bounces until the other person speaks, and then, stillness. TheyāreĀ so present, it hurts.
ⰠTheir eye contact gets⦠weird
Sometimes they canāt stop looking. Sometimes theyĀ canāt look at all... Thereās that momentāthe pause, the flickerāwhere their eyes land on the other personās mouth for just a second too long. Or they track their hands. Or notice how their hair falls into their face. Itās not about lust. ItāsĀ yearning, and itās quiet and stupid and full of panic. And when the person catches them looking?Ā Immediate eye dart.Ā Back to their drink. To the sky. To anywhere else. Guilty. Flushed. Terrified.
ā° Their hands get stupid
Theyāre suddenlyĀ veryĀ aware of what their hands are doing. They fidget more. Or freeze. They keep their arms close to their body, like theyāre worried theyāll accidentally reach out. If they touch the other person, even casually, it lingers. Not long enough to be noticed, but long enough to matter. Sometimes they adjust the other personās collar or brush something off their sleeve and then have aĀ tinyĀ meltdown inside. That kind of touch feelsĀ tooĀ intimate. Itās not flirtation. Itās reverence.
ā° Their silence means more than their words
They trail off mid-sentence. Laugh at things they donāt usually laugh at. Start saying something and stop themselves. Itās because their brain is trying to doĀ too many things at onceāact normal, sound chill, donāt make it weird, try not toĀ look like youāre in love. Meanwhile, the body is over here sweating, shifting, subtly turning toward the other person like a sunflower in denial.
ā° Their whole vibe gets softer
Thereās a gentleness that creeps in. Even if theyāre a sharp, snarky character, thereās a moment where they look at the person like theyāre a planet theyāve just discovered. Itās brief. Itās devastating. Itās involuntary. And they might pretend it didnāt happen. But the reader saw it. The love interestĀ definitelyĀ saw it. And suddenly, everything is different.
ā° Bonus: They mirror the other person without meaning to
Their arms cross when the other personās do. Their head tilts. They laugh a beat after. This is subconscious connection at work. Their body wants to match this person. Sync with them. Be close without being obvious. And when theyĀ stopĀ mirroring? Thatās a sign too. Maybe something hurt. Maybe theyāre trying to pull away. But the body always tells the truth, even when the characterās mouth is lying through its teeth.

fascinated and distressed by chase's disordered relationship with sexuality + his emotions abt his own trauma & abuse
thru the beginning of the show he doesn't even realize he's hot despite being objectively attractive. when he finds out he's hot he then realizes people pretend to be interested in him as a person in order to have sex with him and gets super upset about it
he starts having a bunch of meaningless sex as a coping mechanism when cameron leaves him. and also a lot of other times. whenever something bad happens, basically, he starts going out with a bunch of women, just to feel something, presumably
^to the extent where hes known within the hospital as a slut. and has had sex with an insane amount of nurses. as well as presumably women who are not at his place of work.
he says doing this made him hate himself so he stopped. it's the b-plot for an episode and then he's back having meaningless sex again by the end of the episode
even his coworkers know this about him. and have called it out, masters even says she thinks he doesn't respect women bc, in her words, he's with a different one every few days or maybe he finds comfort in meaningless relationships
goes back to having meaningless sex within weeks of getting stabbed. which is really bad for wound healing reasons too. genuinely it seems like such compulsive behavior for him considering he keeps doing it even when its objectively not only a bad idea but actively dangerous
house even directly says he's "a serial slut" because he's "terrified of intimacy." incredibly accurate assessment
his relationship with his sexuality reads so heavily as someone who thinks they're not good for anything else
see also: dissociation & avoidance
we know he has a lot of trauma especially in childhood- he never really gets into it let alone into how he Feels about it but what we know is already bad & that's just the stuff he's okay with sharing with his coworkers or patients
in general he's very avoidant of his own trauma- when he gets stabbed he says he "can't change what happened, can only make better choices from here" as if it was his own fault, and refuses thru the whole episode to acknowledge that being traumatized by this would be a really normal reaction that he is definitely having. instead he just blames himself
also, he dissociates from traumatic things that happen to him - says "there was a stabbing" rather than "i was stabbed" for instance
when he's talking abt his childhood trauma he does it in a very similar way - he talks about it very bluntly and doesn't ever get into how he actually feels about it.
see also: dr. fawn response
general passive willingness to go along with anything- when cameron says they should have sex in s3 he's surprised and then he just kinda goes along with it. not bc he didn't want to bc he obviously did, but he's just generally very much someone who does whatever other people want him to do. i feel like he and cameron both tend to seek validation thru sex in an unhealthy way that i'm still gnawing on like a dog with a bone i have to go rewatch s3 to really articulate it though
he has a sort of desperation for praise and approval especially from anyone he views as an authority figure. he does whatever authority figures tell him out of this idea that it'll bring him approval and therefore safety
like no matter what house does or says to him he doesn't argue or retaliate or anything. even when house punches him he collapses on the ground in pain and then just keeps talking about the patient like nothing happened.
the scene in 3.10 after house punches him where he's in the ddx room and house walks in and throws the file at him and chase is startled and tries to pretend he's not. and he looks up with this huge fuck ass bruise on his jaw swallows heavily and pretends not to be upset. and house asks if he got that looked at as if he wasn't the one to give it to him and chase just swallows and says he's fine. dr fawn response :(
#text#i still have a few episodes left Worried im gonna post this and immediately soemthing else will Happen that is relevant here#avian i stole the phrase 'dr fawn response' from u its really good its been bouncing around my head for several days#chase#robert chase#house md#Implication here being i think he was sexually abused at some point. idk if the Writers intended that#but i'm looking at him with my eyes and thinking about him in my brain and it's very clear to me#house spoilers#analysis

thereās a chance that this is a widely held belief but in the case that it isnātāhear me out. i donāt think buck realized that, during their breakup, tommy had told him he wants forever with him. that tommy didnāt breakup with him because he doesnāt want forever, he broke up with buck because he wants forever. he aches for forever. but his fear has led him to believe that forever isnāt his to have, regardless of his desires. tommy knows that (well. in complicated ways i would argue but iāll come to this another time), we know that, but i donāt think this is something buck has fully realized. and this isnāt a dig at buckās competence. not at all.
what buck was ready for that night was (what iām assuming is) their weekly date-night out. theyād go out, watch a movie, get some dinner, come back to buckās and spend the night together luxuriating in each otherās presence, as they often did. just a sweet night together that would be made, in buckās mind, all the sweeter by asking tommy to move in with him and tommy accepting (because i do believe buck thought heād say yes). and maybe he believed that their date-night out wouldnāt just be their usual date-night out, it would be a celebratory one marking an important milestone in their relationship.
and so, buck went from riding this high of asking tommy to move in with him, of leading this important next step in their relationship ā likely believing that the conversation would end in them moving in together ā to being told no and being broken up with instead. as ināhe got hit and shot down twice. first, with tommy telling him that he couldnāt move in with him. and second, with tommy consequently breaking up with him. the latter (the breakup) being something he didnāt even process until the very end, when he asked tommy for clarification. and this lack of processing, in my opinion, was due to a combination of: buckās own high expectations of tommyās potential answer because he wasnāt privy to tommyās fear (which could be its own discussion) and overall, the very abrupt nature of the breakup itself which carried a ton of emotional whiplash. but once buck did understand that he was broken up with, i think thatās all he was able process.
given all of this, i would care to bet he absolutely didnāt register what was, essentially, tommyās declaration of love to him during that emotionally hectic moment. i also donāt think that itās something heās realized since then. again, not a dig at his competence, but more so the emotions surrounding being broken up with taking precedence in his mind. and this would ultimately explain in someway, why heās trying not to give into his urgesāinto his desire to call tommy. and why heās baking instead.
but also, we know that he wants to reach out and was going to do so when he caught tommy bubbling him (until he was interrupted). so i do trust that he knows tommy likes him, i donāt think he doubts that, but heās hasnāt realized or processed the full extent of tommyās feelings. and given that, iād say that buckās desire to text tommy (as far as the mid-season finale) is largely fuelled by his own feelings (which is a good thing and in my opinion, shows growth). as, buck knows what he wants and thatās tommyānow and in the future. maybe heās not able to express it through words but at his core, he knows that everything he expressed to him that night, he did so because he meant it (and plans to mean it). so, if or when buck realizes tommy also wants forever but his fear is keeping him from taking that chance, i do believe buck would immediately reach out and challenge him.
#bucktommy#this analysis is based off of what we know and what we got#in spite of the bad execution i do think character analysis is possible#now do i think the writers will explore it in this way? or do i think theyāve thought this deeply into it? no#but i do believe this interpretation to be in line w canon#as always curious to hear everyoneās thoughts and opinions

The BAU on a commercial flight:
EMILY: Stopped and searched at the security checkpoint because she forgot she was wearing an ankle holstered gun. Is the person who kicks your seat and hogs the armrest because gay people do not know how to sit on a chair properly.
JJ: Is the one having her armrest hogged by Emily. Opens a packet of peanuts and gives someone an allergic reaction. Should have stuck with Cheetosā¦
TARA: āItās okay, Iām a doctor! Not a doctor of medicine, but Iām sure I can figure it out!
PENELOPE: Watches movies on her tablet and eats M&Mās like the little iPad kid she is, eventually falling asleep on Morganās shoulder during āLegally Blondeā.
MORGAN: Shamelessly flirting with the flight attendants and trying to hide the fact that he is watching āLegally Blondeā over Penelopeās shoulderāand loving it.
HOTCH: Reading FBI case files in his sunglasses, not noticing the kid who has been staring at him the whole time thinking ādamn, James Bond be on this flight.ā
SPENCER: Talking to that same kid and his mother, explaining aerodynamics and discussing plane crash statistics. The kidās mother requests a seat change.
ELLE: Lets Spencer explain aerodynamics to her instead. She swaps her red jello for his orange jello from the airplane meal because red is his favourite.
