Is Going Vegan Really Worth It?
There are different categories of vegetarianism with the most common diet consisting of meat and fish free meals. Although it is apparent that we eat too many bad meats, I’m not sold on discarding them altogether. Let’s take a look at the plan a little more to see what makes a vegan diet worth it or not and maybe I’ll change my opinion.
Vegan activists do have a good point when they point out the number of animals we kill for consumption. The amount of animals raised merely to be slaughtered is astonishingly high in America. Cooking tenderloin stake and seasoned chicken is tasty and a great source of protein and it’s easy to understand why we enjoy the luxuries of these meals. However, there are other ways to enjoy protein from natural nuts and plants. Even though it can be hard, cutting down on red meats and increasing natural foods can have huge health benefits in regards to preventing heart disease and diabetes.
Vegetarian diets can provide an excellent amount of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. I think it’s important to point out a reason to stay on track with getting plenty of minerals and vitamins. We often times talk about the benefits a diet plays on our bodies, but we should always ask what is helping our brains function at an optimal level. Minerals like iron, magnesium, and zinc are crucial for brain function. Also, vitamins B & C play a crucial part in brain function.
It’s incredibly important for people following a vegan diet to make sure they get enough zinc, iron, protein and vitamin B. Getting rid of dairy and meats can lead to a deficiency in these categories if not treated properly. This will cause a lot of confusion, dizziness, and fatigue. Veggie burgers are typically supplied with enough of these nutrients to cover any of those risks. Calcium should be found in supplementing products if one is extracting dairy from their diets. A failure to moderate calcium levels can lead to bone thinning and weakness.
Here’s the fun part. What CAN vegetarians actually eat:
- Tofu, tempeh, veggie burgers, beans, nuts, eggs, and quinoa are good sources of protein.
- Cereals, dried prunes, dried apricots, nuts, beans, and whole grain bread are good sources of iron.
- Cheese, yogurts, milk, tofu, almonds, sesame tahini, orange juice, collard greens, and spinach are good sources of calcium.
- Soy beans, soy milk, mushrooms(no not those shrooms), black eyed-peas, split peas, and wheat germ are good sources of zinc.
- Soy based beverages and some cereals are good sources of vitamin B12.
Overall, a vegetarian diet seems like a fun and rich diet in fruits and vegetables. With alternatives for protein other than meat, I don’t see why we can’t all introduce this diet into our own meal plans a little more. The primary benefits being from lowering the amount of red meats that can cause heart problems.
This diet can be harder for active people in athletics and exercise programs. It’s important to learn about portion sizes in order to maximize nutrient intake.

Take Control Over Your Diet
Are you experiencing fluctuations in your weight gain and weight loss? It’s common for a lot of us to lose grasp of a diet that works for us. By understanding different diet options we can decide which is the best to follow. Research is continuously improving to determine specific diet plans based on ones genes. Let’s get into the details and get you on your way to living a healthier lifestyle.
First lets take a look at the science behind these new studies. Nutrigenomics is the testing of DNA for specific gene variations to determine a suitable diet specifically based on ones genetic makeup. This is our best way to look under the hood of ones body to find the solution to a diet problem. By taking the initiative to learn about these options we can understand why it’s important to follow a nutrition plan. Following a proper diet isn’t only for people who exercise, but for everyone in order to optimize brain and body function.
For example, do you eat a lot of chocolate because it makes you feel better? If yes, your oxytocin hormone has a receptor gene called A allele. The hormone oxytocin relates to feelings of calmness and affection that reduces stress levels. Those who rely on chocolate and other similar treats to reduce stress have a higher chance of becoming obese. The oxytocin receptor GG allele gene can promote stress-reducing benefits to stay calm without relying on treats, but some people who have that AA receptor gene from both parents find that eating chocolate is the easiest way to reduce stress.
The next three paragraphs are going to cover the importance on the affects of a mother’s diet on her child’s DNA. Scientists focused this research on the IGF2 gene that involves human development and growth. A pregnant mothers diet has the greatest affect on the development of a child during the beginning stages of pregnancy. The Insulin-like Growth Factor 2 (IGF2) protein promotes development in the early fetal stage.
Methylation is the effect that can turn a gene “on” or “off” in production of proteins. Proteins are involved in almost every part of the development of a cell. Environment can influence the amount of methyl in a gene. More methyl typically turns the gene “on” and less methyl turns the gene “off”. A mothers diet in early pregnancy can affect how much methyl her children receive in their DNA. Studies have shown that mothers who are exposed to famine like circumstances give birth to children with less methyl. This DNA makeup in the children last a lifetime and is passed down to their children.
Mothers who didn’t get enough nutrients during pregnancy gave birth to children with less methyl, leading to higher chance of obesity and diabetes. A lack of vitamin intake early in pregnancy can negatively affect a child’s ability to fight infection and diseases.
These are important factors that give more meaning to following a healthy diet. Having a true understanding and purpose to eat healthier will increase the likelihood that we stay consistent with our diets. Keep in mind that what you eat is going to affect your DNA and ultimately affect your child’s DNA.
