#this is very good but my yardstick is #if you make podcasts and wanna talk to me you're indie #so theres a level of institutional that doesnt count anymore (wtnv for example) #specifically because theres no reason for joseph fink to strike up a char with me at a podcast conference #solipsistic but still feels true

A couple of notes:

Institutional does not mean "established", it means "I have power and money due to being part of the establishment. It's a way to try and encompass non-corporate and non-profit, but still rich and powerful, entities within the industry. As I said, things like national broadcasters and such (something that I know is kind of a marginal thing in the US scene, but is an omnipresent part of the AU and UK scenes). The point of these definitions is to ask "where's the money coming from?". Night Vale Presents is not Institutional because they've been around a while, they'd only be Institutional if, because of their status in the industry, they're capable of just handing money over to productions without oversight or active work, and last I checked, Joseph Fink is not that. NVP has a number of ongoing productions, but Fink's still creatively involved with most of them - he's not a kingpin, so far as I know.

This does, however, expose the more usual definition of "indie" that exists out there, which is almost synonymous with "punk" - in this sense, an indie production is one that subscribes to the punk-DIY aesthetic and directly refuses to engage with hierarchy.

I'm also not a big fan of this kind of solipsistic definition anyway, and the main reason why I'm not is because it implies that there's no such thing as a successful indie podcast - if you're successful enough to be making enough money to need to focus on the business of your podcast, rather than the community of creators, you lose your "indie" card. It also implies that, if being indie is important to you, there's a level of success that you need to "walk away from".

Like I do get that for a lot of creators who define themselves as "indie", what they actually mean when they use the term is "podcast creators that I know and care about", aka the members of their chosen community. If that's the definition you choose, that's fine, but be aware that it's not exactly an inclusive definition - all communities have fences, after all.

I guess it's that time of year when we pretend not to notice that the self-proclaimed "independent game awards" shows are nominating full slates of titles by developers with hundreds of employees and multi-million-dollar production budgets, eh?
