#We've had our yearly secret santa gifts exchange at my dorm and I've been gifted the first volume of Beast 😭😭😭😭😭#I'm crying forever. This december marks three years since I've watched the first b/sd episode#and yet this is the first time I actually own a b/sd manga volume. Like I own it and I can read it whenever I want!!! How cool is that!!!!!#Like there's so many Akutagawa images in it!!!! It's insane!!!!!!!! AND IT'S BEAST AT THAT#I'm deeply moved because I never spoke about it to virtually anyone here (at my dorm)?#Like I suppose a bunch of people vaguely know I like anime but only a couple of close friends know I like. Like-like reading manga lol.#And the person who gifted it DEFINITELY didn't know I like anime in general much less b/sd specifically much less Beast in particular!!!!!#I'm 100% sure (they just arrived this year and we hadn't even had that much occasions to talk to each other).#Which means they went through the trouble of gathering intel from my close friends about what I like and actually follow through‚#seek for the specific manga in a comic store etc... It's such a nice gesture I'm so heartwarmed.#And of course I'm glad for every gift I've received in the last years (genuinely)‚ but the fact that this was the most *specific* to what–#I like. It makes it so special! They were so kind.#There must be one (1) person in this whole 60 people dorm who knows I like Beast–#(that would be the girl who introduced b/sd to me in the first place) and the fact that they asked them for it...#I feel both very grateful and lucky lol#When I unwrapped it!!! Like I thought it was just a random book which would have been nice but like!!!!!#When I actually saw through the thin paper the cover!!!! The scream I screamed in my head#Anyways!!!! I own a b/sd manga now!!!!! I've only got time to go through the first chapter so far but it's suchhhh an experience.#It's like reading it for the first time again 😭😭😭 Half because the translation is so much different than the English one lol.#And I basically know the English version by heart. Half because I never saw this kind of high quality!!!!! It's!!!!! Insane!!!!! Like!!!!!!#I'm crying 😭😭😭 The drawings are so sharp and crisp (in the good way). The lines are so clean there's no disturbance at all#I literally never saw anything so good in my life I'm crying a little. I'm so so glad they blessed me with Beast specifically#The takebon edition is pretty cheap (it's just planet manga so there's no color illustrations or dust cover or anything unfortunatelly.#But to make up for it the volumes are significantly cheaper then let's say J-Pop)#There's also some unique typesetting choices? The text from the book-like boxes is in lowercase which is interesting!#Initially I thought I wouldn't have liked the translation (opening it randomly there was Akutagawa saying “crepa!” (“die!”) to Dazai in ch1#Which was kinda jarring since it's very low register and everyone knows Akutagawa has very complex speech patterns.)#But actually reading it I'm really enjoying the translation so far!!!!#There's so many choices that made me grasp details I actually missed all the times I've read the English translation.#That is to say! Very excited to read it!!!! Will probably make a review / translation commentary if I can find the time!!!!!

my most devastating book to tv character name moment was jaime lannister from got. i read the books first and for me he was jaime pronounced the spanish way (kinda like HAY-meh). yes all the names were anglo. i didn't care. so imagine when i first heard his name on the show and even in the spanish dub he was jay-mee or whatever you pronounce it in english :(
#also it was my first time i ever encountered the english version of jaime#as my understanding was before that. jaime in english was jamie#jaime was always in spanish. until that moment. it completely rocked my world#it for sure happened with more got characters but none are ringing a bell now#there's others that i only know the nicknames for in spanish#cause i read the books in spanish and i watched the show with my family which meant i had to do it with the spanish dub#i have no fucking clue how meñique is called in english#is it literally 'little finger'? cause if it is that's just ridiculous#also of course the bastard surnames which honestly sound fine in spanish? the english ones are good as well#like jon nieve#ríos was another one i remember (river?)#and that's basically it. it's been a while sjdjsdjs

i. it took a whole 2 fucking minutes and shot of another google search for me to realise that the character in the show i'm watching wasn't doing his first search in english rather than swedish, like, just because or something. no it's bc he's english and he speaks english and no swedish and the whole damn show is in english and they've been TALKING in english THIS WHOLE TIME. and yet i was still wondering why the search wasn't in swedish

#understandable have a nice day#now do you guys see how i used to write 5k word essays in like 2 hours for school#when i was in middle school one of my English teachers would actually give me a MAXIMUM word count for my assignments#and i always went over it lmfao#once he assigned a 1500 word story and everyone was complaining about how long it was. so i wrote a 10‚000 word one...........#not even like on purpose. its just how i write lmfao#so he said no. im not reading that Na (he called me na). youre getting a 0 if its over 5000#so i got it down to 7200 and begged him to accept it bc i could NOT find anything else to cut and he was like FINE#i was his like assistant so in exchange i just had to grade all of the other homework and quizzes for all of his classes#which i literally did anyway so idk what his ass was complaining about 🙄 should've considered himself lucky#that specific story was actually a Romeo and Juliet setting switch set in revolutionary france AND it was a fucking doctor who crossover#so he had the PRIVILEGE of reading my version of romeo and juliet based on the episode the girl in the fireplace from doctor who#pretty sure its still on ao3 lmfao

#i was excited about this musical about tamara de lempicka an art deco polish painter and the obcr came out last week so i started listening#to it and in the second song she marries tadeusz łempicki though they don't even mention him at all the literal quote is#“Today I will marry the only man for me: I will be a Lempicka!”#and like 1. they say it in the english way which makes no sense as this is happening in russia 2. when she married she was Łempicka#and Łempicka is a female version on Łempicki her husband's surname literally she was going by correct polish grammar#why would she misprounce it purposefully in another slavic country when the point of changing pronunciation is to make it easier for others#only when she moved to paris she changed it to de Lempicka#but like okay then i go on r/broadway and there's somebody working on the show claiming that they don't mispronounce it#they clearly do; but another argument that her family was involved in the production so if there was something wrong they would alert sb#right? well i mean susan wojcicki doesn't know how to pronounce her name the polish way#like it's just so tiring#i read a book this year that covered 60 European languages and every language had a short chapter about it#the chapter about polish was about how our names are weird and difficult...#and the author was from the netherlands and also he was complaining that esperanto has a letter h#my brother in christ another name for your country is holland#also like polish is one of the easiest slavic languages in pronunciation because we have more vowels#there are literally whole sentences in for example czech where you don't have a vowel#jesse eisenberg save me; americans may be pissing me off but this one is okay
