Suicide Squad by John Ostrander (and Kim Yale) Reading Order
Tumblr media
This is the run that influenced both movies to the point where James Gunn has given it multiple shoutouts.
It created Amanda Waller, distinguished the team, and gave many characters new characteristics, like Deadshot’s death wish and Captain Boomerang’s backstory. Because of the constantly rotating lineup Ostrander was able to bring characters out of limbo like Shade (who spun out into a miniseries that was so popular it became a 70 issue run), Vixen, Bronze Tiger, and Nightshade and make them significant. As well as turning Barbara Gordon into Oracle. Something I never see mentioned is that a couple dozen issues into the run Kim Yale —a DC editor and eventually wife of Ostrander— started being credited as co-writer through to the end. Bold=Main Story Italics=Optional
Legends 1-6 — Event miniseries by Ostrander that brings the team together. You can just skim the SS parts, which is any scene with Boomerang, Waller, or Flag.
Secret Origins 14
Suicide Squad 1-10
Doom Patrol/SS Special — Takes place around the same time as 11 and 12 but 12 spoils the end.
SS 11-12
Justice League International 13, SS 13 — Crossover
SO 28 — Backstory of Nightshade. Not by Ostrander but she has a detailed origin that shouldn't be skipped.
SS 14-18
Deadshot 1 — 4 issue miniseries by Ostrander. The character doesn't show up in SS again until 22 but this issue has a break between stuff and is mentioned in 19, whereas 2-4 are one story.
SS 19
Manhunter 6, SS Annual 1 — Manhunter sets things up but the Annual feels so different that it doesn't come off like the same story.
SS 20
Deadshot 2-4
SS 21-26
The Janus Directive: Checkmate 15, SS 27, CM 16, SS 28, CM 17, Manhunter 14, Firestorm 86, SS 29, CM 18, SS 30, Captain Atom 30 — long crossover, involving some other titles by Ostrander.
SS 31-66
SS (V3) 1-8 — Returned years later for an 8 issue miniseries that spins out of Rucka’s Checkmate. It works fine without reading Checkmate (which I still haven’t.)
SS 67 — The title comes back years later as part of Blackest Night but it's really more of a Secret Six tie-in and should be read with that instead.
See Also:
Firestorm — Beginning with 55 Ostrander takes over. This was written around the same time as SS and even crosses over during the Janus Directive.
Spectre 1-22, 0, 23-33, Annual 1, 34-62 — Beginning shortly after SS ends, Ostrander begins by far the longest run anyone has had with the right hand of God. Partnered with his frequent penciler Tom Mandrake.
Martian Manhunter 0, 1 Million, 1-36 — After Spectre ends he and Mandrake tell the definitive (and again, longest) run of the character. I would recommend it to anyone curious about MM.
Secret Six — Gail Simone was a big fan of Ostrander’s Suicide Squad and this is basically her version of it, even co-writing an arc with him. It goes through a couple volumes and short return during New 52.
Villains United 1-6, VU Infinite Crisis Special, Secret 6 1-6, Birds of Prey 104-108, S6 1-16, Suicide Squad 67, S6 17-30, Doom Patrol 19, S6 31-36, DC Sneak Peek: S6, S6 1-14

Count Vertigo Headcanon
He fluctates between the cold composure and the absolute chaotic wine uncle. He resent both because he feels like he has no control over it and how he behaves. Both were born as a coping mechanism from trauma he went through so he doesn't feel comfortable in neither but at the same time he feels like they're good in their own way and match the situations he is in. He tries to figure out which of his features he feels are "the real him" and that he is valuable no matter what. Once he does it's over for you bitches.

Arrow Fic Ideas/Prompts
Post 4x15 – Oliver receives comfort from an unlikely source. That source is Quentin Lance. Now that he thinks about it, maybe he isn't such an unlikely source. Quentin knows what it's like to have the person you love walk out on you after all.
Post 6x06 – Oliver is telling William about Slade and how Slade trained him. William wants to meet (for real, not just after getting kidnapped by a maniac and his mom dying) Slade, so Oliver calls Slade and invites him over. Slade turns out to be a big softie. William asks if he can call him "Uncle Slade."
Post 6x17 AU – Slade becomes Oliver's new partner.
H/C sickfic – Oliver gets sick (like pneumonia or something) while on the island. Slade goes into dad mode and takes surprisingly good care of Oliver.
Slade's reaction to seeing Oliver's scars (from where Billy tortured him) for the first time.
AU – Nyssa isn't the only one who trained Mia. Slade helps, too (not with fighting, but with survivalist stuff, i.e., finding fresh water, hunting; intelligence-gathering; stealth; running).
Felicity and Oliver go out of town for their anniversary. William stays with Uncle Slade
Reacher (tv series) x-over: Dig knew Reacher from the Army. Dig asks Reacher for his help. Idk what Team Arrow needs Reacher's help with. Maybe the Prometheus problem. You can just make up something, though.
Moonlight x-over: Tommy, Oliver, Josef, and Mick all hang out. Maybe Josef invites them to one of his parties, or Oliver and Tommy invite Josef to one of their parties.
Moonlight x-over: What if Felicity used to be a Freshie?
S.W.A.T. x-over: Werner Zytle has managed to distribute his new version of Vertigo (it makes you hallucinate your biggest fear) to L.A.. Oliver finds out and goes to L.A.. On a S.W.A.T. raid, Street gets dosed with the vertigo. His team tries to comfort him, but to little or no avail, and they don't have an antidote. The Green Arrow comes in and saves the day.
Supernatural x-over: Felicity meets Charlie. They become besties.

Born Werner Zytle but raised under the name “Cecil Adams” in Vancouver, Werner and his mother fled their home country of Vlatava after its violent destabilization by American agents, in particular Amanda Waller (acting on the part of Team 7)...and Robert Queen, a high profile citizen of nearby Star City. Werner’s mother struggled to make ends meets as a sex worker, most of their money going to doctors as the young Werner suffered from a variety of health problems, largely stemming from Vlatavan Nobility’s...tangled family tree. For Werner, these included Meniere’s Disease (affecting his hearing and eventually leading to total deafness) as well as Bipolar II, PTSD connected to the events that led to him and his mother fleeing Vlatava, and a severe form of vertigo that made him immensely ill. Ironically, the Hitchcock film of the same name was one of his mother’s favorites.
After his mother’s eventual disappearance, the then-teenage Werner dropped out of school and became a drug dealer, eventually being nicknamed “Count Vertigo” both for what his peers believed to be tall tales of his descent from European royalty, and his drug of choice being the experimental designer drug of the same name. Eventually making his way across the border to Seattle, Werner continued living as Cecil up until the appearance of the Green Arrow. Seeking to fulfill his revenge fantasy against the Queen Family and inspired by the Arrow’s vigilante activities, Werner turned to a man he did not fully understand: Vandal Savage. Vandal respected Werner’s desire to better himself and facilitated the implementation of several cybernetic components into Werner’s body. Emerging from this procedure, Werner couldn’t quite hear again, but he could approximate it, and had something else besides: the capacity to extend the vertigo that had plagued him all of his life not only extend it to others, but amplify it.
Still drugged from the multiple surgeries needed to install these cybernetics, Werner didn’t hesitate when Vandal presented him with a capture vagrant to experiment on. It was only as the haze of painkillers had faded that a horrified Werner looked at the destroyed face of his own mother, alive after all these years, in the custody of Vandal Savage. Lashing out at his benefactor, Werner fled, escaping back into the streets of Star City with yet another target for his vengeance in mind.
Werner’s life continued like this for some time. He found community with other Vlatavan refugees and eventually left the drug trade, but he felt betrayed yet again by Oliver Queen’s revelation as the true identity of the Green Arrow and subsequent bid for mayor. Lashing out against Queen, Savage, Connor Hawke and anyone else in his way, it wasn’t long before Werner was apprehended and sent across the country to Belle Reve and into the arms of Director Waller and her Suicide Squad.
The Squad, oddly, was where he finally found his place. A couple other members taught Werner to fence, he got back on his meds, his cybernetics were able to receive long overdue regular maintenance. He even reconnected with his niece, Perdita, born to his sister after they had gotten separate decades ago.
note: ...yeah, idk man, tried to be more detailed with this version. tbh I think I made him a little too much like Breathplay and I fucked up the timeline a bit but whatever
