Thinking about the soulmate modern au you made but focusing specifically on the part about Wei Ying giving Jiang Cheng his kidney cause I've spiraled into an au where Wei Ying is adopted to be the 'Savior/donor Sibling' for his brother. Imagine Yu Ziyuan gives birth to a sickly Jiang Cheng and she pressures Jiang Fengmian to find a way to fix it and some shady doctor suggests the Jiangs get pregnant with a donor sibling but Yu Ziyuan refuses to go through another pregnancy so this doctor suggests the Jiangs adopt a kid who can be one and they are that rich, powerful and influential enough that they can do some back alley testing on orphans from a variety of different orphanages and it takes a few years but they finally find a match in Wei Ying. A 5 year old boy who'd been orphaned after watching his parents die in a car accident. His adoption is made into a public spectacle where the Jiangs are framed as being benevolent and kind for taking in such an unfortunate child.
But it's drilled into Wei Ying even from a young age by everyone around him that he is indebted to the Jiangs and giving parts of himself away to help his brother is 'the least he could do'.
He's not allowed to play sports cause he might get injured, and Jiang Cheng needs him to be healthy and ready. He's not allowed to have friends outside of the family because Yu Ziyuan didn't want to risk him getting into the bad crowd and start "smoking and drinking like the delinquent child he is." Jiang Fengmian does nothing to limit Wei Ying, but he also does nothing with his wife's attempts to do so.
Blood, bone marrow, liver. He gives and gives.
"Open the toolbox and take what you need!" he told the doctors with a toothy grin as if it was just a game.
The eventuality of Jiang Cheng needing a kidney transplant is unsaid but still hangs in the air like a hangman's noose. When it finally happens, Wei Ying wakes up after the surgery, groggy and in pain to see Jiang Yan li by his bedside. Tears running down her face because she'd been so scared. There had been complications on Wei Ying's part during the surgery and while her parents hadn't reacted to the news, she herself had started trembling at the thought of losing one sibling for the other.
So she apologizes. Through muffled tears, with her face buried into Wei Ying's side, asking to be forgiven for a fault that was not her own. After all, what was she supposed to do in the face of her mother's indignation and fury? Was she supposed to take one brother far away while the other laid dying in his own bed?
But Wei Ying's own heart aches seeing the pain he's causing her. So, on his third day of lying in his hospital bed, doing nothing but listening to his only visitor cry when she thought he was asleep, he decides.
On the fourth day, after visiting Jiang Cheng, she makes her way to her other little brothers room only to find it empty with fresh sheets laid out and pulled tight at the sides. She's told by a nurse that, at 18 years old, Wei Ying was legally allowed to discharge himself even if it was AMA, but he had left Jiang Yanli a note before he left. Then the nurse scurries away to do her work before Yanli can even react.
Imagine Wei Ying stumbling as he walks to nowhere. Nothing on him except for a duffle bag filled with the few possessions he'd brought with him to the hospital. Imagine he stops by a cafe because the pain is too much and, by serendipity, is found by Wen Ning, who was working as a barista at the same cafe. Who sees past Wei Ying's smiles to notice the sweat beading on his pale skin. The grimace he fails to hold back when he tries to straighten up in his seat. Without hesitation, Wen Ning tells his boss that he needs to go home even as he hears the man throw threats of unemployment in his direction. Wen Ning simply says nothing as he helps Wei Ying walk to a cab that neither of them can afford, already waiting outside.
Wen Qing isn't pleased to be woken up after a 24-hour shift at the hospital, but she can never say no to her little brother. Especially when he brings home a stray who urgently needs her medical expertise. Though she doesn't hold back from verbally berating the stranger when she finds his fresh surgical scars because what was the idiot thinking???
Imagine Wei Ying staying with them for weeks. Healing under threat of violence from Wen Qing should he try to leave. Imagine him planning to work to repay their kindness but somehow finds himself staying permanently when the little boy living with them asks him to come to his kindergarten talent show to watch him dance. Imagine Wei Ying being the one to show up to parent teacher conferences because Wen Qing unfortunately has work, and Wen Ning is busy with his college courses. Imagine Wei Ying being the one to help little A-Yuan with his homework. The one to tell him bedtime stories. The one to look after him when he gets chicken pox.
Imagine one day the little boy falls asleep curled up on his lap and Wei Ying finally realizes that he can't leave. That for once he felt needed but not for what he can give but for simply just being himself.
Imagine, with Wen Ning's encouragement, he starts taking online courses at the same university. Studying what he actually wants instead of the course that had been decided for him so he could look after Jiang Cheng.
One day, he has to hand in an assignment, and the TA is an old high school friend he didn't think he'd ever seen again. Lan Zhan, on his part, never thought he'd ever reunite with an old crush that is starting to bubble back to the surface the second their eyes met. Both of them have lost the shackles that held them back from fully living their lives. But the question is, are they actually willing to chase what they want and recognize they deserve to be loved for who they are.
Just lots of angst, ok!

Alright this dear here asked for a happy ending and as the person who started this whole mess I ought to make it happen. I'm taking your input on it.
I do think Wei Wuxian would not use the tattoos to cover his scars but to decorate them, because they are part of him, just as the stories his tattoos tell are: lotus flowers for his adopted siblings and the home they gave him, even if they haven't talked since Madam Yu kicked him out; a sun that matches the one on Wen Wing's back and Wen Ning's stomach, because of the new family he managed to build for himself. Flowers that match Granny Wen's birthday and a curled up rabbit for A-Yuan, his adopted son. Crow wings for his deceased parents and a sword over his spine for his younger self, who was a child sharpened like a weapon. And then a little empty window on his bicep, with a few hanging vines: one for each year of his life that he has had a soulmate, though no flowers, because he thought his soulmate was gone.
Lan Wanji learns of the meanings years after they met, in A-Yuan's seventh birthday (he was four when he met him), and asks why hasn't put any flowers yet. They have met, after all. They are even friends, even if that's not all Lan Wanji wants for them. Wei Wuxian is puzzled.
"You asked for no more tattoos," he replies. "I would never ignore your wishes like that."
And isn't that such a wonder? Lan Wanji grew up cared for and loved, but not like this. He has never been understood and respected like this before, his heart has never been handled so kindly.
"And if I didn't mind?" Lan Wanji asks.
"Even then, I wouldn't do it. They were my hope for love from my other half, Lan Zhan. I don't want to feed those types of thoughts, now that we are at least friends."
And so Lan Wanji nods, holding that at least close to his chest and safe warding it there. Wei Wuxian is taking in present tense. Wei Wuxian has welcomed him into his family, his home. He has introduced his son and siblings and grandmother to him, and taken him to his parents graves, and talked to him. He has answered every question Lan Wanji has asked, and been there every time he has needed him, and he has known him like no one else. Lan Wanji, in turn, has had the privilege of being his friend, his confidant, his ally. He has cooked Wei Wuxian and A-Yuan's dinner when the other man was too tired to do so and has driven A-Yuan to school when Wei Wuxian was sick. He has spent holidays with them, and birthdays and milestones too. He knows he's part of their family in all but legal terms, and that he's loved and welcomed always.
He knows, too, that Wei Wuxian loves him, and has loved him even before the beggining. That he loved him when he asked for him in shaky sentences written over skin, and that he loved him in ink sunk deep in his body, a tribute to a soulmate that he never even knew. Wei Wuxian loved him when he stopped getting tattoos once asked to and when he kept his distance because that's what Lan Wanji requested of him.
Wei Wuxian is not subtle. He looks at Lan Wanji like he looks at all his precious things. Lan Wanji has never been happier than when he is with him.
So the very next day, Lan Wanji makes an appointment, and a month later, Wei Wuxian wakes up from a late morning nap to his arm feeling buzzy, only to watch, in real time... Vines. Appearing one by one from the little window to his soul, one for every year that has passed since the last one he got. And then.
Then.
Flowers.
So many flowers that they take over the crevices left over in the other tattoos in his arm, and then they creep up. Up, to his clavicle and breast and... And his neck, too. Over the side of it and up to the end of his ear. Visible, unmistakable.
He stares in wonder, thinking he's dreaming. It would not be the first time he dreams of feeling, let it be pain or love or loss.
So he goes to the most trustworthy pool of information he has, and calls Wen Qing. Who has barely picked the phone before she asks wHAT'S THAT!?
And so. And so.
Lan Wanji comes to find him, skin pink and looking pale.
"What did you do, Lan Zhan?" Wei Wuxian asks, hope and grief fighting in his chest like stray dogs.
"I got a tattoo," Lan Zhang replies, tracing it with the tips of his fingers—not the ink on his neck, but on Wei Wuxian's, until he's cupping his jaw in his warm, shaking hand. "They are my show of love for my other half."
"Lan Zhan."
"I'm sorry for taking so long, Wei Ying."
"Lan Zhan."
Lan Zhan Lan Zhan Lan Zhan Lan Zhan. His soulmate, the name he has yearned for since he knew to name the feeling, the one he would have traded anything to learn when he was eighteen and lost and heartbroken. The name he calls now, as he's taken into strong, welcoming arms and hugged within an inch of life; as his temple and his cheek and his lips are kissed, and then the whole long line of bright flowers.
"Lan Zhan. Everyone is going to know."
"Good. Good. Wei Ying should be loved loudly and brightly, as he is."
And what else can Wei Wuxian do but kiss him again and again and again until A-Yuan comes to ask if they are finally getting married.
(they do get married. They get matching ring tattoos of course.)

I'm rereading MDZS and it just hit me that Wei Wuxian's first impression upon meeting Lan Yuan post-resurrection was that he was a "good sprout"
You guys... you guys... that's his little radish... that's his good little sprout....

Lan Wangji: Why are there little handprints all over the walls?
Wei Wuxian, whispering: Why are there little handprints all over the walls?
A-Yuan, whispering: Because I have little hands.
Wei Wuxian to Lan Wangji: Because he has little hands.

Are you normal or do you cry about how A-yuan was almost the same age when Wei Wuxian died as Wei Wuxian was when his own parents left him?
Both of them were taken in by major Sects because of who their parents were ( or guardian in the case of A-yuan), one loved because that was all that was left of their guardian but the other hated for the same reason.
One wasn't allowed to learn about their origins to keep them safe and protected in a world where every last member of their Clan was hunted down and killed. Still, the other was simply forbidden from learning anything about their parents because of a baseless rumor, jealousy, and insecurity.
One was truly accepted and the other was called a slave in their whole life.
Their backgrounds were so similar yet their childhoods were vastly different. They both went through so much.
The one with a good memory forgot the pain due to a fever.
The one with a horrible memory remembered every bit.

I imagine Lan Sizhui appears very poised, like the perfect Lan disciple but only Jingyi knows how fucking weird he really is, like their conversation sometimes go like this-
Lan Sizhui during a night hunt: Wow, do you smell that? Reminds me of home for some reason.
Lan Jingyi: There’s a fucking corpse behind the tree.
Lan Sizhui: this is the best thing I’ve ever eaten. Truly delicious.
Lan Jingyi: it’s a fucking boiled
radish.
Lan Sizhui: Sometimes I wonder if the moon feels lonely, surrounded by so many distant stars yet always shining alone.
Lan Jingyi: Dude, go to fucking sleep.

College teacher Lan Qiren who is always complaining about this loud, annoying and disruptive student in his class who is always half asleep on his desk and submits his assignments four seconds before the deadline.
His nephew Lan Wanji, who is in the same class, who can't believe how attracted he is to this hot mess of a man that seems to be physically incapable of not questioning every single subject they learn and makes such good points about them every time. How is it possible for a person seemingly can't dress, feed OR control himself in public be so smart? It would be less annoying if this dude at least took notes or had books, but no, he seems to be doodling on actual craft paper every time he peeks at him. Lan Wanji wants him carnally. And maybe romantically as well. He looks like a good cuddler, you know? Not that LWJ knows much about hugs and all that.
Meanwhile, there is college student, part time worker and full time single parent Wei Wuxian that is constantly running on two hours of sleep, who is working himself to the bone on his engineering degree along with Wen Qing (med student) to provide for Wen Yuan, chronically ill Wen Ning, ancient Granny and half a dozen old aunties and uncles that would (and should) have retired decades ago if they could afford it.
Now imagine the Lans' car breaking down in some speedy neighborhood after dining out, and who comes to the rescue? Just-got-out-of-work WWX, who would try his hand at the engine if they weren't shaking like crazy but assures them that his uncle four will get it going in a sec, want to follow him home so they are not in the street alone?
And so the Lans get to see this twenty years old exhausted young man get home, get immediately jumped by his toddler, and going to help with dinner while simultaneously checking over A-Yuan's homework, answering Grannie's questions about his day and helping WN with mobility exercises.
Lan Qiren becomes more forgiving. Lan Wanji falls in love and has to reconsider his own prejudices before approaching Wwx and asking him out on a study date that quickly becomes an engagement. Lan Xichen becomes besties with Granny and is there every Sunday. He and Wen Qing may fall in love. A-Yuan gets a whole new set of family members.
The car? It was actually fine. It just ran out of battery.
