A head cannon I've had for a while, is that the Water Tribes had an agreement with the Air Nation to harvest lumber from their lands.
The Air Nation has a bunch of territory on roughly the same latitude as Kyoshi Island, so it stands to reason they've got trees.
The Air Nomads also don't have any good way to transport bulky cargo like grain or stone (sky bison are fast but limited in carrying capacity), so it makes sense that they might make arrangements with their sea-loving neighbors on the poles to trade sustainable lumber harvesting rights for preferential bulk trade agreements.
After Sozin's genocide, the Water Tribes continue their old tradition of harvesting wood for ships from Air Nomad land, but the cultural memory of their previous give and take discourages them from outright taking over the more temperate islands.
boring ATLA discourse: who is mostest abused Zuko or Azula 🥺 vote now! kys if yuou disagree with me
cool ATLA discourse: does the SWT have tundra AND taiga like the NWT does or is the use of wood in Sokka and Katara's village just an animation inconsistency?

Golden Boy (and Silver Girl) for the Kintsugi AU.

Though ever since the War started it's much more uncommon to see outside of the Fire Nation#The Earth Kingdom seal their scars in bronze. The high nobles consider it to be unbecoming so it's much more common in the middle classes.#Kintsugi is much more well received in the SWT than it is up North. The NWT believe it to be barbaric. A foreign practice adopted by the...#...less civilised South. You can imagine the outrage and scorn Katara received when arriving North with a quite noticeable silver scar.#It is the seal of a Southern Warrior. She got hers during the same raid that took Kya. Hakoda himself has quite a few...#While Sokka tried to give himself a Kintsugi scar (it did NOT go well)#The Air Nomads didn't practice Kintsugi! Theirs was a naturalist approach. Your body is yours to cherish and protect just as it naturally is#These ideas were shared with me by some amazing people! If you have any headcanon or idea regarding this (or any) of my AUs let me know!#It makes me so happy to inspire you! Even if it's just a little. I'd love to hear all your thoughts and rambles!!!

I wanted to go a bit more in-depth with this piece that I did for zukka week 2023 because i got inspired to do more insane clothing details. ID in ALT.
Ramble about the influences/inspirations below:
Design inspirations for Sokka's clothing are mainly Inuvialuit and Yup'ik, with Nenets, Tlingit, and Chukchi inspiration for the tassels, patterns, belt and beadwork. I mixed these with the ornaments canon shows us used by the Northern Water Tribe, and also in Legend of Korra. I got particularly excited about drawing from Inuvialuit sources since the tassels we see in canon look like they could be inspired by this. Going beyond canon's animation-friendly colour scheme, I drew from Nenets patterns/embroidery/sashes and Yup'ik beadwork for accent colours. I think in the future I'd like to find ways to incorporate more Tlingit-style patterns since I rarely see them in fanart (which is a shame - they're stunning), but since they tend to be very big I ultimately decided to only include them as a nod in order to keep the regalia recognisable as 'Water Tribe'. I wonder if I could start using Polynesian influences as well?
Zuko's headdress and particularly the shoulder garment and beaded embroidery draw heavily from women's clothing styles of Lê Dynasty Vietnam. The other main influence is men's royal clothing in Tang Dynasty China, and patterns worn by Mongolian Khatun. Since we have a bit more to go on in canon as to what fire nation regalia looks like, I blended that in as well. I got particularly excited about the embellishments on Lê Dynasty clothes because I could give a little nod to Zuko's dragon-fire by adding more colours to the embroidery. In the future I think I'd want to make the Mongolian influence a bit more obvious... perhaps even push the envelope by incorporating some Bashkir designs, though I'm not sure how well that will go.

A drawing of Katara from ATLA, when she becomes a Queen of the Air Nation after marrying Aang
So Katara is definitely gonna wear splashes of blue and yellow often after becoming Queen of Air Nation. I incorporated Ancient Tibetan and Mongol elements into this attire, and also some stylistic nods to Imperial Consort Wencheng of Tibet and Khutulun into this drawing
The braided hairstyle is a reference to a complicated Tibetan hairstyle wjth a beaded headdress
Tumblr media
And since Air Nation has nods to Tibetan Empire, and Water Nation has nods to the Xiongnu Empire and Ancient Mongolia, Katara is gonna infuse Ancient Tibetan, Xiongnu and Mongol fashion elements in her wardrobe after she and Aang got married
Wencheng was a spirited and highly intelligent Tang Dynasty Princess, who has a liking for poems and riddles
She isn't a warrior princess like Katara is, but Wencheng is sure more of a spirited/silk hiding steel type
Similarly with Katara, who later on married into Air Nation royalty, Wencheng later on married into Tibetan Empire Royalty ( Air Nation got nods to Tibetan Empire, remember )
And Wencheng becomes a formidable diplomat similarly as Katara has become
Tumblr media
Khutulun is one of the many great granddaughters of Genghis Khan and Borte, and a niece of Kublai Khan. A formidable warrior and shrewd diplomat, Khutulun becomes famed for her battle strategy prowess and formidable prowess in Mongol wrestling.

The federal government has no legal duty to ensure First Nations have clean drinking water, even if Liberal ministers publicly suggest otherwise, Justice Canada lawyers say. That's the defence the federal government is expected to mount in Ottawa this week in Federal Court, as it fights a national class-action lawsuit launched by a remote northern Manitoba First Nation in 2022. Shamattawa First Nation, which has been under a boil water advisory since 2018, and its Chief Jordna Hill are pursuing the case for all First Nations members countrywide whose community was subject to a drinking water advisory in effect on or after June 20, 2020. The plaintiffs argue First Nations have a basic human right to clean water that Canada has violated, describing the conditions facing their communities as "an urgent human rights crisis." In its statement of defence, Canada argues the government supports the delivery of potable water for First Nations as a discretionary political decision, calling it "a matter of good governance rather than legal duty." "Canada does not owe any legal obligations or duties to operate and maintain the plaintiffs' water systems," says the statement of defence.
