Cultural Fashion: Hair Loopies

Dissecting the real life cultures that influenced show. First up is Katara’s trademark ‘do!

Hair Loopies

So this first fact actually comes from the Twitter poster, Low Arctic (https://twitter.com/LowArctic). The reference pictures used are screenshots from Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (Inuktitut: ᐊᑕᓈᕐᔪᐊᑦ).

While braided hair is common in many cultures, Katara’s trademark “hair loopies” are uniquely unique to Inuit people in the land now known as Canada. According to Tumblr user Atagotiak, who is of Inuk descent, hair loopies are known as qilliqti in Inuktitut. While her “loopies” are drawn un-braided in the show for ease of animation, I’d love to see them thinly braided and decorated with bright blue beads in the live-action adaption.

The young woman photographed is Nancy Columbia, an Inuit-American beauty queen, actress, and screenwriter from the Silent Film Era. When I try to imagine Katara as a real person, she ends up looking a lot like Nancy.

Ok, so this is a bit random. But, I watched Black Cauldron yesterday and I remembered these two are my OTP. I just had to draw them. I also saw @darkmagickingdom and @assortedvillainvault make a lot of posts about them. So it inspired me to draw, and hopefully I'll draw them more.

Fiyero really is Elphaba's hero.

Wizard: Elphaba, aren’t you tired of running/fighting? Aren’t you tired of being the strong one? Wouldn’t you like someone to take care of you?

Fiyero, 5 minutes later: Shows up and takes care of Elphaba. Get’s her away from the wizard. Leaves behind his comfortable, royal lifestyle to be with her. Gives her hugs and kisses in the forest. Lets her stay in his family’s huge castle so she will be safe. Sacrifices himself for her to be tortured in a cornfield. Doesn’t get mad when she turns him into a scarecrow to save his life. Comes back to Kiamo Ko to get her. Stays by her side as they leave Oz together and start a new life. All because he’s shallow and selfish. Yero My Hero.

decidedly unfriendly reminder that fanfiction is written by real people with real feelings for free in their free time. it's a labour of love and something to cherish. if you come across a fic that you don't enjoy, that's totally fine, but it is your due diligence as a fellow fan and decent human being to click away. leaving mean comments, absurd rating systems or harassing writers in their inbox while hiding behind an anonymous icon is not an acceptable manner to behave in any fandom and online space ever. it's disgustingly entitled, wildly disrespectful and only serves to discourage people from sharing their writing in a community that is meant to be fun and supportive. the next time you read something you don't enjoy, stop reading it and move on with your day. read something you like and leave kudos and a nice comment there instead. have some common sense and don't be a fucking asshole. it's not that fucking difficult.

Narvi!!! :D

So while researching for my novel, I found out two things:

Narvi is A MOON (next to Saturn) and AN ISLAND.

But guuyyys. Baby boy is A MOON. And both his parents are associated with stars :3

(FYI: Loki's star is the Lokabrenna, aka Sirius, and Sigyn's star is the North Star)

Some things that I'm scared of/concerned of for the Disney POTO :

. Okay so turns out the Disney POTO may be different from the ALW musical and MIGHT be more like in the POTO book

. I'm scared of them making Christine a ' modernist girl boss who fights '. Christine Daae is not one who fights - she is gentle and brave, and her pacifism literally saved a lot of people including Raoul in the book

. Im scared of them Making the Phantom like Prince Adam and Raoul like Gaston. I'd boycott this SO HARD if that really is the case

( again, downplay or even eradicate the themes of fighting against grooming, abuse and manipulation?! PLSSSS )

. PLS keep the gothic horror elements of the story. PLS

. And also if Rachel Zegler is really playing Christine, get her to operatic training STAT. She needs it

. Btw the opera songs in the POTO book are WAY harder than the ones in the ALW musical

. And I really don't want them to romanticize Raoul's old relatives. In the book, Raoul finally sees the parallels of his toxic upbringing with the abuse Christine has from the Phantom, and fights to severe ties against his old relatives

. POTO is not a love triangle. It's an epic tale of fighting for justice, love, hope and also exploring the depths of humanity. Raoul and Christine are soulmates and fight against the Phantom in their own ways - Raoul with his military battalions and Christine with her pacifism that saved everyone else and even saved Raoul from going off to the deep end

. Christine doesn't even need to be a ' fighting girl boss ' - her kindness and pacifism saved everyone else and herself. She literally is an epitome of kindness is a form of strength

Fuck cottagecore, I want 80s fantasy film core. The sky is a strange hazy amber color, the foliage is purple, and everything is covered in an obscene amount of glitter. There are muppets and/or Hensonian creatures everywhere. Tim Curry is probably there. Everyone is dressed like they’re going to a renaissance festival. There are wild chickens running around underfoot. I am the town bookseller, which basically means my shop is filled to the brim with dusty, leatherbound books that I will either sell or potentially give away to you, if you express sufficient interest in them. You read these books and then have magical coming-of-age adventures and save the world. You try to bring the books back later but I tell you to keep them. There are unicorns and fairies and goblins and giants and other feral magical creatures without names who want to eat you. Be safe out there.
