Crack thought – Charles trying to be the most supportive best mate to Edwin by encouraging them both to “embrace your culture” (“What culture? We’re both British, Charles!”) But he goes about it in the worst way. He hijacks Crystal’s apartment and television so him and Edwin can watch glee. It’s terrible. Edwin hates every moment, and especially hates the delight Charles takes in quoting the damn show afterwards. But Charles does get the message so he switches to history documentaries.

“We should watch this one next. It’s about throwing bricks at cops!”

“What does that have to do with my liking men?”

“I don’t know, but I wanna find out.”

Charles claims to have a crush on Martha P Johnson after, which sparks some confusion as the boys try to understand the difference between trans women and drag queens (“Nah mate, they said she’s a woman. She’s old, but she’s ballsy as fuck. I’d kiss her.”) When they try to ask a very tired Crystal how you tell the difference, she snaps “I dunno! Maybe try asking them!”

Which leads the boys to an impromptu mirror hop to Stonewall. Maybe there are some ghosts there from the time they can ask!It turns out that there are an unfortunate number of both ghosts, and people who can see ghosts there, but they have fun and make some new friends.

They come back and they’re still debating whether the person who gave Charles a pink feather boa was a woman or a drag queen, when Crystal tells them yet again, to just ASK someone’s pronouns if you’re not sure. Edwin leaves and comes back with a new question. “Crystal, what does ‘non-binary’ mean?”

the way Edwin's immediate reaction upon seeing the misery wraith in the Devlin house is to grab Crystal and cover her mouth, even while he's explaining (apparently calmly) that it hunts by sensing negativity and pain - presumably instead of using sight or sound

and the way that he does the exact same thing to Charles when they're reunited in Hell, but here he urges him specifically to be quiet (in what must be the most barely audible line of dialogue in the whole show) because he's found that's the only way he can get a short reprieve between bouts of torture from the spider thing (to the point that when he ran into Simon earlier he - rather nonsensically - believed the sound of tearing paper behind a closed door was also a big risk)

All I'm saying is, it doesn't look like it was actually all that important he stop Crystal from making noise in the Devlin house, and as much as that scene originally read as Edwin kinda having his shit together while Charles & Crystal were both more affected & then literally incapacitated, his head couldn't have been half as clear as it first seemed if his immediate reaction was reverting to Surviving Hell Tactics even when they weren't really helpful or applicable here

edwin is a better, stronger man than i, because i would be infinitely more dramatic and petty in his position when crystal enters the scene and charles starts paying attention to her. i would have comic!edwin’s reaction at least (accusing charles of choosing girls over him, storming off to solve cases on his own and deciding to do shit that will get him into trouble so that charles has to come rescue him, etc) but i’d probably take it a step further. i’d be like “i guess you want me to go back to hell then since i’m basically nothing to you 😒” and then i’d legitimately go back to hell JUST to see if he came after me. if he didn’t come after me then an eternity of torture in hell is nothing compared to the pain of rejection and being replaced. but i’m also incredibly mentally ill, so.

(james acaster once told a story about a christmas where he asked his parents for a spice girls cd. he found out whilst at the pool with his family that his sister was getting the cd instead of him. naturally, he tried to drown himself in the pool to make his parents feel guilty. that’s my vibe if i were ever in edwin’s position.)
