"Ok! Now do a silly one!!!"
For the final day of character appreciation week I'd like to present my grand vision of our characters on a school field trip with their favorite teacher Ms. Nurse! I saw a bunch of the bts pictures and felt such a school trip vibe I had to make this!!!

I’m thinking about the symbology of Monty.
Monty: a crow, a murder down to his very essence, living in a cage that is unlocked and yet he can never escape from because he was never taught how to fly. Or, rather, he was born bound, born with clipped wings, born half dead, never truly alive, half-bird, half-boy, never enough of either.
Monty: doomed by the narrative, rising into the frame as he is born and falling out of the frame as he dies, both at the hands of the same master, both times under the iron of a tool made to card wool, to get it ready for spinning, yet he is unravelled, unstitched, by the very person who knitted him together.
Monty, born dead, born out of his own death. Literally a star, in that one star is born out of the death of another star, nebula from supernova, death to birth to death again.
Monty, only ever able to make one decision on his own and was killed for that choice, but who never would have been able to remain alive anyway.
Monty, neither the crow nor the boy but certainly never a Finch, because he is not a son, not a boy, but a tool.
Monty, never given a last name or identity of his own.
Monty, dead boy walking, dead before the story even began, dead before he was born, who fell in love with a boy as dead as he was.
Monty, doomed by the narrative from the moment he took his first breath.

Joshua Colley's birthday is today, January 20, and there's no better time to show him a little appreciation! Let's make some noise and let him know how much we love the way he brought Monty to the screen!

Appreciation for Joshua Colley and for Monty
The very first time I watched Dead Boy Detectives, I was watching on my tablet. As I got to the middle of Episode 06, it was late at night and I was washing dishes.
I stopped to watch the clearing scene, and as Monty left the clearing I thought "Well, I guess that's it for Monty — do I feel kind of sad about that? I don't know — I feel like with all of the subterfuge, we don't know a ton about him as a character…" and just about then the screen dimmed, because it was past my bedtime. Of course, I wanted to watch the rest of the episode.
Then I got to the scene with Esther, where she quite literally rips Monty apart -- and the screen was so dark, I could barely see anything other than the flames and feathers. I could hear the crow, but I couldn't see him flying away.
Which is why I was standing in the middle of my kitchen, past 10PM on a school night, crying out loud, "But Monty's okay, right?!??"
And that was when I decided that I did, in fact, like Monty.
As I rewatched the show, I noticed so many ways that liking was grounded in how clear it is that Monty's interest in Edwin is genuine and not just an act — I am endlessly fascinated by Monty's choices in carrying out his assignment from Esther, and what he does with the leeway he has suddenly been given. It's so interesting watching him navigate that assignment and his suddenly conflicting feelings.
What a challenge that must be as an actor, to take a character who we are introduced to as a bad guy who is out to gain our heroes' trust, and then make the audience quickly understand, "oh, yeah, this character's supposed to pretend that he likes him, but he actually likes him." I never saw Monty as a particularly good liar, in contradiction to what Edwin says in Episode 08, but I did think he was very good at selectively telling the truth — about his feelings for Edwin, and about his freedom.
So I'm very thankful to Joshua Colley for bringing Monty to life, and I hope that he has had a happy birthday today (January 20th)!

Hi! I'm participating in The Good We Do fundraiser project for victims of domestic violence in the Dead Boy Detectives fandom as a video editor and I have 3 commission slots open.
The way this works is: message me with a song and an idea of what you want then, after we've agreed on the commission, donate to one of the charities listed by the project and send me the receipt. And I will make a song edit for you!
Here are some of the edits I've created.
And here are the tiers I'm offering:

My first impressions of dead boy detectives characters (this is based on memory and messages I sent my friends about it, it may not be entirely accurate but unless someone can read minds and/ or time travel, we will never know)
Edwin- my official first impression of him was (and I quote) “I like him for the same reason I like Jonathon sims (in series one) he has the disposition of a wet cat”. I did think he and charles were in love from the intro
Charles- I honestly cannot find any evidence of my opinions on Charles so I have to assume that I always liked him, I don’t remember disliking him in any sense
Crystal- I thought Crystal Palace sounded like an alias, I assumed her surname was station, I did like her though. I found it funny that she hated the dbda’s name
Jenny- to quote myself “this person gives off queer vibes maybe it’s the sharp weapon”
Niko- first time she’s shown on screen I said“is this meant to be a heartstopper meeting thing? Oh the gay panic” but also I loved her once she had slightly more screen time. I also loved all her costumes
Esther- I thought she was cool but also terrifying
Night nurse- “I sort of love her hair”
Cat king- my first thought was “the cat king? What is this cats the musical?” Then I went on a tiny rant about the use of kilts to break down gender norms that I may one day share here and then I was once again disappointed by Netflix for mistakes with the cat kings kilt (it’s too long and that kilt pin is in entirely the wrong place) and finally I was unsettled by the fact that Edwin is taller than the cat king (the cat king has tall energy and that is destroyed by Edwin being taller than him)
Monty- I sort of predicted Monty’s whole story, I said “I think that through the deception Monty will end up falling in love with Edwin properly but Edwin will reject him because of the betrayal and then he will maybe have some sort of redemption where he saves Edwin from the witch” I think this was in episode 5 when I said this but it’s the first message I found about Monty so it’s the best I’ve got
I feel like I should add that I first watched dbd months ago and have rewatched it several times since then

i really need to start posting my drafts and stop leaving them to collect dust, because "Monty's the type of guy to kick an invisible rock when he's mad" is undeniably quality content
